Abstract:Although GM food production is considered an important strategy to meet the growing food needs of the population around the world, a majority of the GM food consumers express doubts about purchasing and eating them. However, it can be argued that consumers have different opinions about GM foods and their influence on human health and the natural environment. GM food producer Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) may significantly affect such opinions, but the effect of this variable has been partially neglected in previous research studies. To address this gap, the present study investigates Iranian consumers' concerns about GM foods, trust in these products, and perception of GM food producer CSR as determinants of attitudes towards GM food. Data were collected from Iranian consumers. A cross-sectional survey research with a multi-stage random sampling approach was employed to capture the responses of 372 Iranian consumers. The results showed that consumers have both negative and positive attitudes towards GM foods. Perceived social equity, trust, and health concerns were the most important determinants of attitude towards GM foods. According to the results, these variables could account for 52.9% (Cox and Snell R2) and up to 70.6% (Nagelkerke R2) of the variance of the dependent variable. Furthermore, results revealed statistically significant differences among the consumers with different educational levels in terms of perceived social equity, perceived environmental responsibility, and environmental concern. The research contributes to the body of knowledge in GM food consumption by evolving the CSR to assess attitudes of users concerning GM foods.

Abstract:Genetically modified food (GMF) is one of the most debated issues in the food market. There has been considerable interest from both academic researchers and policy makers regarding the antecedents and consequences of the commercial adoption of GMF applications. Conceptually, GMF can be defined as "Genetically modified (hereafter GM) foods are produced from genetically modified seeds or ingredients derived from plants or animals whose DNA has been manipulated using genetic engineering methods" [1, p. 2861]. However, only a limited number of studies have tested the related issues of GMF products from a customer perspective. Thus, this project intends to discover and examine the main drivers and hindrances in predicting customers' intention and buying decision behaviour in developing Arabian countries (i.e., Jordan). A diffusion of innovations (DOIs) model was selected as the theoretical basis for the current study project. A field survey study was conducted to collect the requested quantitative data from a convenience sample of Jordanian customers. Statistical results largely supported the role of relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, social approval, awareness, perceived risk and price value on the behavioural intention to adopt GMF products, which in turn significantly predicted actual adoption behaviour. The results of the current project will hopefully expand the current academic understanding of the main factors that predict Jordanian customers' perception and adoption of GMF products.

Abstract:Due to rapid globalization in the world, the understanding of cultural differences, such as beliefs, values, ways of thinking, and perceptions about new technologies in food processing have also increased. Since the 1990s, when genetically modified (GM) foods were introduced into the food supply, they have provoked many debates. In this review, it was identified and discussed how social and psychological factors influence public attitudes to GM foods and the perceptions of consumers in using GM foods. According to this review, GM foods are deemed unnatural and artificial, thus affecting the overall acceptance of their application. Due to the concerns about their effects on the environment and human health, people expect an assessment of the known or possible dangers, as well as the preventative management of the risks. Providing adequate information about GM foods via a compulsory labeling policy may serve as an appropriate way to increase public awareness and acceptance of GM foods.

Consumer intention to purchase GM soybean oil in China: effects of information consistency and source credibility

Abstract:Consumers' potential reactions toward genetically modified (GM) foods affect their commercial feasibility and determine the decisions of economic agents. Inconsistent information on GM foods has created a sense of uncertainty in Chinese consumers' mind. This paper studies how the information about risks and benefits of GM foods from major sources influences Chinese consumer intention to purchase GM soybean oil. This analysis uses data from a survey of 880 residents randomly sampled from 13 cities in Jiangsu province. Using a multinomial logit model, we analyze the effects of information consistency and source credibility. The results show because of new information about 17.36% of consumers increase their intention to purchase GM soybean oil, and 15.10% of consumers decrease purchase intention. Compared to consistent information, inconsistent information can maximize change of purchase intention. The attitude change is greatest when there is a moderate difference between the new information and the initial consumer attitude. Furthermore, trust in biotechnology research institutes, government departments about GM, and GM experts are easier to promote consumers to change their intention to purchase GM soybean oil in a positive direction. Factors affecting purchase intention of organic food products: Evidence from a developing nation context

Abstract:The organic food industry has experienced rapid growth in recent decades. The industry is relatively new to developing countries compared to developed countries. Since Iran has the potential to produce organic products, it is essential to study factors that influence consumers' intention to buy them. The present study was designed and implemented for this purpose. In this cross-sectional study, 520 adults were selected using multistage sampling. Path analysis was employed to test a hypothesized model of predictors of consumer purchase intention for organic food. Attitude, environmental concern, and sensory characteristics directly impacted the intention to purchase organic food (p < .01). Knowledge, perceived price, and household size indirectly affected purchase intention through attitude (p < .01). Age indirectly affected purchase intention through health consciousness, environmental concern, perceived price, and sensory characteristics (p < .01). Subjective norms, health consciousness, and the perceived convenience of purchase had a positive and significant effect on purchase intention, directly and indirectly, through the mediating influence of attitude (p = .000). The educational level also affects purchase intention directly and indirectly through knowledge, health consciousness, environmental concern, and subjective norm (p = .000). The most potent total effects belonged to health consciousness, subjective norms, and education, respectively. Overall, the model could explain 47% of the intention variance and 45% of the variance in attitude. Various factors influence Iranian consumers' decision to buy organic food. This information can help professionals make well-informed decisions in policymaking, production, marketing, tourism, and retailing.

Abstract:Background: In the last two decades, genetic engineering has led to the production of genetically modified or transgenic products in the world using the modern biotechnology. However, accepting such products by consumers is still in doubt with respect to their negative effects on the environment and human health. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the attitude of housewives in Yazd towards transgenic food products. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 500 housewives in Yazd in 2018 by cluster-random sampling method. In order to collect the study data, a two-part questionnaire (demographic and attitude) was applied. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 18 using descriptive statistics and ANOVA test. Results: The mean and standard deviation of the participants' attitude toward transgenic food products was 19.24 ± 4.92. The participants' attitude scores were significantly different considering the participants' reading the food label and education level (P < 0.05). Half of the studied women reported that they have received their information on transgenic food products through television and radio. Conclusion: Regarding the misconceptions in people with lower levels of education and those who do not read the food labels, culture promotion is necessary. Moreover, provision of scientifically proven trainings on the advantages and disadvantages of transgenic products seems to be essential in order to develop a proper attitude in housewives in Yazd.

Abstract:In this research, we debate the critical challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic such as food scarcity, by examining the influence of consumption values on consumers' willingness to consume genetically modified (GM) food in the presence of consumer food attitudes, animosity, and ethnocentrism, which could be the one possible option to deal with the food scarcity problem. The proposed relationship could help to understand the complex societal problem of food scarcity and import dependency in the food sector before and after the crisis. Therefore, based on the theory of consumption values, we investigated government actions, consumer attitudes, and their willingness to consume GM food through 1340 valid USA responses and 1065 Chinese responses. We observed that COVID-19 doubled the number of malnourished people in 2020 relative to 2019, while consumption values, to some extent, changed consumer food attitudes and were inclined toward other food alternatives such as GM food regardless of governmental support for GM food in both USA and China. Moreover, this research enables governments, policymakers, market practitioners, and other stakeholders to use the COVID-19 crisis as an opportunity to negotiate with other countries to share their food technology along with imports.

Abstract:A correlation between fungal exposure and aggravation of inflammatory symptoms in asthmatic individuals is well documented in the literature. However, the molecular mediators responsible for clinical symptoms due to fungal exposure in individuals with asthma are still not known. The fungal cell wall polysaccharide mannan stimulates production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF)‐α in monocytes. Recently, a role for the plasma protein mannan‐binding lectin (MBL) has been proposed in individuals with severe asthmatic disease, although little is known about its role in those with mild and untreated asthma. MBL has been reported to modulate inflammatory cytokine production, but the mechanisms are not known. We conducted a pilot study and found that the cell wall mannan preparation used stimulated lower TNF‐α production by monocytes from asthmatic subjects compared with that from healthy subjects in the presence of autologous plasma. Lipopolysaccharide‐induced TNF‐α production was not significantly different between the groups. Further, plasma MBL levels in individuals with mild asthma were slightly increased compared with those in normal subjects, although the difference was not statistically significant. We speculate that reduced TNF‐α production in monocytes from asthmatic subjects after fungal cell wall mannan stimulation could partly be influenced by plasma components such as MBL.

Abstract:Owing to the emerging challenges on global food security and the decade of controversies over genetically modified food (hereafter GMF), the present study aims to explore the effects of advertisement framing on health and environmental benefits, sources of perceived risk reduction, and domain-specific knowledge on the acceptance of GMF. The study conducted a quasi-experimental factorial 2 (advertisement message framing: health vs. environmental benefits) × 2 (expert endorsement: present vs. absent) between-subject design involving 300 adult participants from Pakistan. Using a multi-group structural equation model, the four conditions were assigned to each participant group (n = 75) to test the hypothesized relationships. The quasi-experiment results suggested that the advertisement messages (ad-framed) incorporated with the health and environmental benefits, as delineated by experts, can be a viable communication strategy in developing effortless cognitive cues towards GMF acceptance. The pioneer findings validate the significant efficacy of advertisement messages (ad-framed with expert opinions) in reducing perceived risk through augmented objective knowledge that activates the mechanism of favorable development of attitude and acceptance of GMF. The study findings offer strategic directions to policymakers, marketers, and food technologists in raising greater awareness and acceptance towards GMF products.

Abstract:The agricultural sector could benefit from biotechnologies in addressing challenges such as pests, droughts, and food supply issues. Genetically modified (GM) crops have been developed to offer not only economic advantages to farmers but also to contribute positively to the environment, human health, and consumer well-being. However, consumers' hesitancy in buying GM food may stem from societal reactions to how biotechnologies in agriculture have been regulated so far. The legislative debate that led, in early 2024, to the approval of Commission's proposal (COM(2023) 411 final) – aimed at simplifying the authorization process for plants obtained with certain new genomic techniques (NGTs) – has sparkled public discussion in the European Union on the application of biotechnologies in agriculture. This work aims to investigate Italian consumers' acceptance toward GM food. Through data collected from an original survey ( N = 564), we tested a) their level of knowledge of GM techniques; b) if they are aware of differences between established techniques based on classical approaches of crossing and selection and more precise biotechnological techniques; c) their propensity to buy GM food, with a specific focus on food safety and environmental sustainability issues. By using a Multinomial Logit Model (MNL), starting from three hypotheses, the study highlights a gap in knowledge transfer and, in general, the communication process. This results in widespread misinformation that hinders informed consumer choices. The study also emphasizes consumers' sensitivity to food safety, including environmental issues, but still related to food safety issues.

Abstract:Understanding the determinants of consumers' acceptance towards genetically modified food (GMF) is critically important for the biotechnology industry. Based on a unique data set collected by the authors in 2002 and 2003 in 11 cities of China, an econometric model of consumers' acceptance of GMF is estimated. The results show that consumers' acceptance of GMF is high in urban China and consumers' trust in government has a significantly positive effect on consumers' acceptance of GMF. Our study also shows that failure to consider the endogeneity of consumers' trust in government will lead to serious underestimation of its impacts on consumers' acceptance of GMF. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first study on the impact of consumers' trust in government with consideration of the endogenous problems that often are encountered in consumer perception studies.

Abstract:In this study, we present the bibliometric trends emerging from research outputs on consumer perception and preference for genetically modified (GM) foods and policy prescriptions for enabling the consumption using VOSviewer visualization software. Consumers' positive response is largely influenced by the decision of the governments to ban or approve the GM crops cultivation. Similarly, the public support increases when the potential benefits of the technology are well articulated, consumption increases with a price discount, people's trust on the government and belief in science increases with a positive influence by the media. Europe and the USA are the first region and country, respectively, in terms of the number of active institutions per research output, per-capita GDP publication and citations. We suggest research-, agri-food industries-, and society-oriented policies to be implemented by the stakeholders to ensure the safety of GM foods, encourage consumer-based studies, and increase public awareness toward these food products.
Impact of Green Marketing Strategy on Brand Awareness: Business, Management, and Human Resources Aspects

Abstract:Given the move towards industrialization in societies, the increase in dynamism and competition among companies to capture market share, raising concerns about the environment, government, and international regulations and obligations, increased consumer awareness, pressure from nature-loving groups, etc., organizations have become more attentive to issues related to environmental management. Over time, concepts such as green marketing have permeated marketing literature, making environmental considerations one of the most important activities of companies. To this end, this research examines the impact of green marketing strategy on brand awareness (case study: food exporting companies). The population of this research consists of 345 employees and managers of companies like Kalleh, Solico, Pemina, Sorbon, Mac, Pol, and Castle, from which 182 individuals were randomly selected as the sample using Cochran's formula. This research is practical, and the required data have been collected through a survey and a questionnaire. The research results indicate that (1) green marketing strategy significantly affects brand awareness. (2) Green products have a significant positive effect on brand awareness. (3) Green promotions have a significant positive effect on brand awareness. (4) Green distribution has a significant positive effect on brand awareness. (5) Green pricing has a significant positive effect on brand awareness.

The decision to buy genetically modified foods in China: what makes the difference?

Abstract:Genetically modified (GM) food products have been commercialized and promoted in China. Despite assurances from the China Ministry of Agriculture that certified GM food products are safe to consume, most consumers are reluctant to purchase GM foods. Given the benefits of GM foods, this study investigates Chinese consumers’ purchase intentions and purchase behavior toward GM foods and the associated influential factors. The theory of planned behavior with the consumers’ demographics and product-related factors supports our study. Data were collected from 477 Chinese consumers across 26 provinces in China. The study uses binary logit regression and ordinal logit regression to estimate the relationship among variables. The results reveal that Chinese consumers’ awareness, products’ available information, trust in sellers, long product life, GM foods’ taste and consumers’ experience in buying GM food products are positively related to their willingness to buy GM foods. The number of family members, the habit of checking GM labels and a preference for nutrition value are associated with Chinese consumers’ lower intention to buy GM foods. We demonstrate that product variety and trust are two determinants that could change Chinese consumers’ attitudes toward buying GM foods. Our study contributes new insights into Chinese consumers’ decision to purchase GM foods at the national scale. We consider a wide range of factors not tested in previous studies. Further, the study’s findings provide a better understanding of consumers’ GM foods purchases and purchasing behavior toward the Chinese government and entrepreneurs.

Abstract:Purpose Genetically modified (GM) food has received considerable interest from academics and practitioners. However, research on consumer loyalty towards GM food is relatively sparse. Guided by the theory of planned behaviour, this study aims to explore the factors that influence consumer repurchase intention and behavioural loyalty towards GM food. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 464 Australian consumer panel members surveyed through a nationwide online survey, with data analysed by structural equation modelling using AMOS (v. 22.0). Findings The findings reveal that consumer loyalty towards GM food is influenced by the interplay between awareness of benefits and risks, situational and social influences and attitude and repurchase intention. Female consumers are found to not only possess a relatively more favourable attitude and repurchase intention, but also are more loyal towards GM food compared to male consumers. Unlike older consumers, younger consumers' loyalty towards GM food is influenced by their attitude and repurchase intention. The relevant policy implications of the findings are discussed. Practical implications As consumers have contrasting views about GM food, to influence their loyalty, it is important for GM food industries as well as policy makers to better understand how to address consumers' varying concerns about GM food. Originality/value This study offers a parsimonious model for explaining the factors that influence consumer loyalty towards GM food.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of different information source on consumer attitudes toward genetically modified food.Design/methodology/approach The data used in this study are obtained from a large-scale nationwide consumers' survey in urban China conducted by the China Center for Agricultural Policy, Peking University, in 2020. A descriptive analysis between information sources and consumer attitudes toward GM food was conducted. Based on the collected data, an econometric model on the determinants of consumer attitudes was constructed and used for analysis.Findings This study shows that the impact of new media is currently no different than that of traditional media, indicating that the media campaign successfully reduced the spread of rumors and misinformation regarding GM food. Moreover, this study also shows that consumers whose main information source regarding GM foods is school hold more positive feelings toward such food.Originality/value This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the impact of information source on consumer attitudes toward GM food. To reverse consumers' negative attitudes, China has launched a widespread media campaign since the first decade of the 2000s. Results of this study show that authorities' efforts to manage and surveil new media have yielded the desired outcome.

Abstract:Consumer preference for the mandatory labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods promotes public support for the implementation of GM food policies. This study analyzes consumers' preference for the traceability of GM soybean oil. Survey data were collected through a self-administered survey covering 804 randomly sampled urban residents in the eastern, central and western regions of China. Using a logit model, this analysis examines the impacts of influential factors on consumers' preference for traceability. The results show that about 56.5% of the respondents have a positive preference for the traceability of GM soybean oil. Factors increasing the preference for traceability include a better perception of the attributes of nutrition benefit and potential health risk, perceived inadequacy of simple mandatory labels, more attention paid to food labels, and distrust in the agencies overseeing GM food safety. Enhancing consumers' perceptions of GM-related attributes and awareness of food labels will help improve the mandatory labeling management of GM foods.

The evidence from the existing literature is mixed and sometimes confusing. The objective of this study is to conduct a large in-depth face-to-face in-house survey that examines the consumers' awareness, acceptance of and willingness to buy GM foods in China. To achieve this objective, a well-designed consumer survey was conducted in 11 cities of five provinces in Eastern China in 2002 and 2003. The results indicate that despite much less information on GM foods available publicly in China, more than two thirds of consumers in urban areas have heard of GM foods. But their knowledge on biotechnology was limited. Chinese consumers' acceptance of and willingness to buy GM foods was much higher than in other countries. Chinese consumers also demonstrated great variance in their acceptance of different GM foods. Information and prices of GM foods were two important factors affecting consumers' attitudes toward GM foods. Based on the findings of this study and given that our sample is in the more developed eastern Urban China, we conclude that the commercialization of GM foods is not likely to receive great resistance from the consumers in China.

Abstract:The technology of genetically modified (GM) can overwhelm agricultural and nutritional difficulties in the food industry, food safety and security by increasing resistance to pests and herbicides, drought tolerance, rapid ripening and ultimately increasing yield and food quality. However, in the last few decades, significant dangers of GM foods to humans, animals, and the environment have been identified. Nevertheless, there is insufficient scientific evidence to prove the harmful effects of these foods on human and animal health. In this article, several advantages and disadvantages of this technology are reviewed. Therefore, it is necessary to perform all the requested risk assessments before releasing any GM product and next post-release checking to track probable gene flow and limit any possible contamination of the food chain catastrophe. Therefore, the safe use of this technology, in compliance with all protocols of environmental health and safety assessment at the national and international levels are demanded.
