Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received tremendous attention due to their extraordinary catalytic performances. The synthesis of this kind of catalysts is highly desired and challenging. In the last few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated as a promising precursor for fabricating SACs. In this review, the progress and recent advances in the synthesis of MOF-derived SACs and their electrochemical applications are summarized. First, the synthetic approaches based on MOFs and accessible characterization techniques for SACs as well as their advantages/disadvantages are discussed. Then, the electrochemical applications of these MOF-derived SACs including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and other energy-related reactions are reviewed. Finally, insights into the current challenges and future prospects of this field are briefly presented.

Abstract:Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have a wide range of potential applications such as sterilization, water purification, medicine and biochemistry, and so on. We have recently developed 220–350 nm AlGaN or InAlGaN DUV-LEDs[1–5]. However, the efficiency of the AlGaN DUV-LED is not yet so high, due to inferior light extraction efficiencies (LEE), as well as, low electron injection efficiency (EIE) caused by quite low hole concentrations of p-type AlGaN. In this work, we demonstrated dramatic increase of efficiency of 250 nm-band AlGaN DUV-LEDs by introducing multiquantum-barrier (MQB) [6].

Abstract:The next-generation energy storage systems such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and alkali metal (Li, Na)-chalcogen (S, Se) batteries have received increasing attention owing to their high energy density and low cost. However, one of the main obstacles of these systems is the poor reaction kinetics in the involved chemical reactions. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate suitable and efficient catalysts into the cell. These years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) are emerging as a frontier in catalysis due to their maximum atom efficiency and unique reaction selectivity. For SACs fabrication, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been confirmed as promising templates or precursors due to their high metal loadings, structural adjustability, porosity, and tailorable catalytic site. In this review, we summarize effective strategies for fabricating SACs by MOFs with corresponding advanced characterization techniques and illustrate the key role of MOFs-based SACs in these batteries by explaining their reaction mechanisms and challenges. Finally, current applications, prospects, and opportunities for MOFs-based SACs in energy storage systems are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of fuel cells and metal-air batteries, attributed to their unique structures and compositions. Recently, the preparation of transition-metallic single-atom electrocatalysts (TM-SACs) using MOFs as precursors or templates has made great progress. Herein, the development history of SACs prepared based on MOFs and their characterization are overviewed firstly, and then several strategies are summarized for preparing TM-SACs using MOFs and further modification. Finally, the challenges and opportunities confronted by TM-SACs are fully discussed. Consequently, our work can guide the realization of TM-SACs abundant with high activity, high loading and high stability.

Abstract:The development of efficient and cost-effective catalysts to catalyze a wide variety of electrochemical reactions is key to realize the large-scale application of renewable and clean energy technologies. Owing to the maximum atom-utilization efficiency and unique electronic and geometric structures, single atom catalysts (SACs) have exhibited superior performance in various catalytic systems. Recently, assembled from the functionalized organic linkers and metal nodes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultrafine porosity have received tremendous attention as precursors or self-sacrificing templates for preparing porous SACs. Here, the recent advances toward the synthesis strategies for using MOF precursors/templates to construct SACs are systematically summarized with special emphasis on the types of central metal sites. The electrochemical applications of these recently emerged MOF-derived SACs for various energy-conversion processes, such as oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), are also discussed and reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects regarding the development of MOF-derived SACs are proposed.

Abstract:Metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs)-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) are extensively employed as emergent electrocatalysts in various electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems. They are prized for the utilization of metal atoms with the existence of unsaturated metal sites and a significant range of active sites. The SACs play a pivotal role in bridging between homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts which extended substantial recognition over recent years. The present review describes the new development in the preparation of MOF-based SACs and their state-of-the-art electrocatalytic applications. The coordination structures, atom proximity control, divergent single-atom-host combinations, and correlate them to their intrinsic electrocatalytic applications toward water splitting, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), etc. are highlighted. The figure-of-merit, frontiers in the field, critical challenges, and future developments of MOFs-derived SACs for potential applications in clean and sustainable energy technologies are also described.

Abstract:The challenges of energy depletion and environmental pollution raise the demands for the development of new energy technologies, such as metal-air batteries (MABs). The performance of a metal-air battery heavily relies on two fundamental electrocatalytic reactions, that is, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which take place at the air cathode during battery discharging and charging, respectively. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives stand out as promising candidate catalysts for the once sluggish redox reactions at the cathodes of MABs, due to their unique merits of crystalline porous structures and tunable chemistry. These distinct characteristics of MOFs offer an effective way to introduce bifunctionality (catalytic activity for ORR and OER in the case of MABs) through the design and synthesis of MOF-based catalysts with large surface area, well-developed porous networks, smooth electron and mass transfer pathways and active sites with different catalytic preferences. Herein, this review summarizes recent advances in the design and synthesis of MOF-based catalysts for a range of MABs, including Li-, Zn-, Al-, Fe- and Na-air batteries. By the demonstration of representative examples, this review also discusses the underlying mechanisms for the origin of bifunctional performance and enhanced catalytic activity with MOF-based catalysts. Future challenges and prospects for both MOFs and MABs are also proposed at the end of this review.

Abstract:To address the fossil energy crisis and environmental problems, the urgent demand for clean energy has promoted the rapid development of advanced rechargeable metal-air batteries based on the redox reaction couples of gases, such as the oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction and carbon dioxide evolution reactions. High-efficiency electrocatalysts are highly desirable to enhance the conversion efficiency of these reactions for enhancing battery performance. Significant advances in single-atom catalysts (SACs) on carbon matrices have been witnessed in recent years as attractive and unique systems to improve the electrocatalytic activities for high-performance rechargeable Zn- and Li-air batteries. This review summarizes the latest achievements in the applications of carbon-supported SACs in metal-air batteries, with a particular focus on the rational design of SACs and their fundamental electrocatalytic mechanism at the atomic level. The future development and perspectives of SACs in the field of metal-air batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated their great potential for creating single-atom catalysts (SACs) in the last 2 years. In this review, we provide a sketch about the critical roles of SACs and some key issues that have to be contended while considering their energy applications. The great opportunities provided by MOFs for the further development of SACs are discussed in the sections that follow. Furthermore, we summarize the reported approaches and illustrate the potential strategies for the construction of MOF-based SACs by taking advantage of the structural features of MOFs. The accessible characterization techniques for SACs are briefly assessed. In addition, a series of representative reports on the successful fabrication of MOF-based SACs for energy-related applications (mainly photocatalysis and electrocatalysis) are overviewed. Finally, some foresighted ideas and predictions on the future directions of MOF-based SACs are pointed out.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention as potential precursors for the synthesis of single atom catalysts (SACs) due to the high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and ligand structure. Although significant efforts have been made to synthesize MOFs-derived SACs for electrocatalysis, it is still lack of fundamental regulation principles which governing the intrinsic electrocatalytic performance. In this review, the recent advancements in various MOFs-derived SACs are systematically summarized. The correlation between the central metal atoms, coordination atoms, local environment, morphology, and their corresponding electrocatalytic performance, including activity, selectivity and stability, is comprehensively analyzed. Furthermore, advanced characterization techniques are summarized to elucidate the ligand configuration of MOFs-derived SACs. Finally, the major challenges and future research directions for MOFs-derived SACs are proposed. This review provides a comprehensive understanding and updated information on the design of MOFs-derived SACs with well-confined coordination structures.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis are required in metal-air batteries and an efficient dual-functional single-atom catalyst (SAC) is still lacking. This is partly because of the limited synthesis strategies to modify the coordination environment of metal centers in SACs. Herein, we report a genetic strategy, transformation from thiometallate anions in the precursor to metal-sulfur bonding in carbon, producing hollow-sphere-structured Mo SAC with O/N/S co-coordination as an efficient ORR/OER dual-functional catalyst. The MoS4 2−-doped polydopamine have O/S co-coordination for Mo, which converts into S/O/N co-coordination in carbon during pyrolysis. We established that coordination engineering, specifically S coordination, could boost the ORR catalysis of Mo SAC. The low ORR half-wave potential (E1/2) and small Tafel slope are among the best of Mo-based non-noble metal catalysts. The OER overpotential of 303 mV at 10 mA cm−2 is significantly lower than that of commercial IrO2, and Pt/C. Assembled Zn-air batteries can work steadily for 90 h without significant voltage decay. Our strategy can be extended to the synthesis of other group-V and group-VI metal hollow SACs with an S coordination, such as W.

Abstract:This review summarizes the strategies for modulating the active sites of MOF‐derived catalysts by adjusting the electronic structure and extensively investigates the reaction mechanisms of ORR and OER in the charging and discharging processes of metal‐air batteries. However, the inherently slow kinetics of reversible oxygen reactions present an urgent demand for the development of efficient oxygen electrocatalysts. Recently, metal‐organic framework (MOF) derivatives have attracted extensive attention in electrocatalysis research due to their unique porous structure, abundant active sites, and tunable structural properties. Especially, the optimization of the electronic structure of active sites in MOF derivatives has been proven as an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity. In this review, we provide an overview of the electronic structure optimization strategies for active sites in MOF derivatives as advanced catalysts in various O—O bond activation reactions, including the construction of synergistic effects between multiple sites, the development of heterogeneous interfaces, the utilization of metal support interactions, and the precise modulation of organic ligands surrounding catalytic active sites at the atomic level. Furthermore, this review offers theoretical insights into the oxygen activation and catalytic mechanisms of MOF derivatives, as well as the identification of active sites. Finally, the potential challenges and prospects of MOF derivatives in electrocatalysis are discussed. Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the core of energy conversion and storage devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts (e.g. metal-free carbonous materials, single-atom catalysts, and nanocomposites) has been a rigorous challenge for the clean energy technologies. In recent years, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with a unique flexible structure and uniformly dispersed active sites have become novel and attractive precursors for preparation of carbon-based composite materials, which show wide applications in many fields, especially in electrochemistry. Herein, we summarize the applications of various MOF-derived electrocatalysts (including MOF-derived single atom electrocatalysts, MOF-derived metal-free electrocatalysts, and MOF-derived nanocomposite electrocatalysts) in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. The influences of active sites (including metal central ions and heteroatoms), electronic structure, chemical composition and porosity of MOF-derived materials on the ORR performance are commented by combination of experimental results and theoretical calculations. The dispersity and coordination environment of the active sites in MOF-derived single-atom electrocatalysts are significantly influenced by the structure of the MOF precusuror and pyrolysis conditions. How to increase mass density of effective active sites and protect the active sites from damage and corrosion is discussed. The applications of MOF-derived electrocatalysts in the field of fuel cells and metal-air batteries are highlighted.

Abstract:It is necessary to develop new energy technologies because of serious environmental problems. As one of the most promising electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, the Zn–air battery has attracted extensive research in recent years due to the advantages of abundant resources, low price, high energy density, and high reduction potential. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of Zn–air battery during discharge and charge have complicated multi-electron transfer processes with slow reaction kinetics. It is important to develop efficient and stable oxygen electrocatalysts. At present, single-function catalysts such as Pt/C, RuO2, and IrO2 are regarded as the benchmark catalysts for ORR and OER, respectively. However, the large-scale application of Zn–air battery is limited by the few sources of the precious metal catalysts, as well as their high costs, and poor long-term stability. Therefore, designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent activity and stability using resource-rich non-noble metals is the key to improving ORR/OER reaction kinetics and promoting the commercial application of the Zn–air battery. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a kind of porous crystal material composed of metal ions/clusters connected by organic ligands, which has the characteristics of adjustable porosity, highly ordered pore structure, low crystal density, and large specific surface area. MOFs and their derivatives show remarkable performance in promoting oxygen reaction, and are a promising candidate material for oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress in advanced MOF-derived materials such as oxygen electrocatalysts in a Zn–air battery. Firstly, the composition and working principle of the Zn–air battery are introduced. Then, the related reaction mechanism of ORR/OER is briefly described. After that, the latest developments in ORR/OER electrocatalysts for Zn–air batteries are introduced in detail from two aspects: (i) non-precious metal catalysts (NPMC) derived from MOF materials, including single transition metals and bimetallic catalysts with Co, Fe, Mn, Cu, etc.; (ii) metal-free catalysts derived from MOF materials, including heteroatom-doped MOF materials and MOF/graphene oxide (GO) composite materials. At the end of the paper, we also put forward the challenges and prospects of designing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with high activity and stability derived from MOF materials for Zn–air battery.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the important half-reaction for metal–air batteries and fuel cells (FCs), which plays the decisive role for the performance of whole devices. Developing high-efficiency non-precious metal ORR catalysts is urgent and still challenging. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered to be one of the promising substitutes for Pt due to their maximum atom utilization efficiency and mass activity. Despite considerable efforts in preparing various SACs, the reaction mechanism and intrinsic activity modulation during the ORR reaction are still not understood in-depth. In this review, the latest advances in the current synthetic strategies for SACs are summarized. The effect of various coordination environments including central metal atoms, coordination atoms, environmental atoms, and guest groups on the intrinsic ORR activity of SACs are discussed. The electrocatalytic mechanisms are clarified by combining density functional theory calculations with in situ advanced characterization technologies. Then, the applications of SACs in FCs and Zn–air batteries are reviewed. Finally, the prospects and challenges for further development of SACs are highlighted.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO2 RR) is an efficient strategy to relieve global environmental and energy issues by converting excess CO2 from the atmosphere to value-added products. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOF), which feature unique active sites and adjustable structures, are emerging extraordinary materials for eCO2 RR. By modulating the MOF precursors and their fabrication strategy, MOF-derived SACs with specific-site coordination configuration have been recently designed for the conversion of CO2 to targeted products. In the first part of this review, MOFs synthesis routes to afford well-dispersed SACs along with the respective synthesis strategy have been systematically reviewed, and typical examples for each strategy have been discussed. Compared with traditional M-N4 active sites, SACs with regulated coordination structures have been rapidly developed for eCO2 RR. Secondly, the relationship between regulations of the coordination environment of the central metal atoms, including asymmetrical M-Nx sites and hetero-atom doped M-Nx sites, dual-metal active sites (M-M sites) and their respective catalytic performance have been systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and future research directions for the application of SACs-derived from MOFs for eCO2 RR have been proposed.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are presently attracting a lot of attention for electrical energy storage, owing to their low manufacturing cost and very high theoretical specific energy density. Currently, the large‐scale application of ZABs is hampered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen‐reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which underpin battery discharging and charging processes, respectively. In recent years, metal single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for driving oxygen electrocatalysis in ZABs, offering both high electrocatalytic activity and high metal atom utilization through unique metal coordination environments (typically porphyrin‐like MNx species on N‐doped carbon supports). Herein, recent breakthroughs in the design of SACs for ORR and OER electrocatalysis are summarized, with a general view towards improving ZAB performance. This Review begins by introducing the operating principles of ZABs and the reaction mechanisms of the ORR and the OER on the air electrode, after which the various types of SAC‐based materials developed to date for oxygen electrocatalysis and ZABs are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the relationships between the structure of the SAC active site and electrocatalytic performance. Finally, challenges and opportunities for SACs in practical ZABs are explored.

Abstract:The development of high-performance electrocatalysts is critical for the widespread applications of the sustainable energy technologies. In this context, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated metal sites have attracted more attention because of their maximum atom utilization and remarkable electrocatalytic performance. However, the high surface energy often results in a low loading of the single metal atoms, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we give an up-to-date review on the progress for the SACs. The research progress of noble metal SACs, transition metal SACs, single-atom alloy SACs, and double metal SACs is summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of synthesis strategies including wet chemistry, atomic layer deposition, and high-temperature pyrolysis are discussed. We also propose some new research direction to obtain the high-performance SACs. It is expected to realize widely applications of SACs.

Abstract:Molybdenum‐based single‐atom catalysts (Mo‐SACs), with unsaturated coordination and unique electronic structures, have emerged as research hotpots in various electrochemical conversion fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthetic strategies and microenvironment engineering of Mo‐SACs and their representative applications in various electrocatalytic reactions involving the cycles of N2, H2O, and CO2. As a sustainable energy technology, electrocatalytic energy conversion requires electrocatalysts, which greatly motivates the exploitation of high‐performance electrocatalysts based on nonprecious metals. Molybdenum‐based nanomaterials have demonstrated promise as electrocatalysts because of their unique physiochemical and electronic properties. Among them, atomic Mo catalysts, also called Mo‐based single‐atom catalysts (Mo‐SACs), have the most accessible active sites and tunable microenvironments and are thrivingly explored in various electrochemical conversion reactions. A timely review of such rapidly developing topics is necessary to provide guidance for further exploration of optimized Mo‐SACs toward electrochemical energy technologies. In this review, recent advances in the synthetic strategies for Mo‐SACs are highlighted, focusing on the microenvironment engineering of Mo atoms. Then, the representative achievements of their applications in various electrocatalytic reactions involving the N2, H2O, and CO2 cycles are summarized by combining experimental and computational results. Finally, prospects for the future development of Mo‐SACs in electrocatalysis are provided and the key challenges that require further investigation and optimization are highlighted.
