Abstract:Aim We used a landscape‐scale study of birch invasion onto heather moorland to determine the consistency of changes in vegetation type and soil properties and in the community composition of five soil organism groups. Our aim was to determine whether the degree to which soil organisms respond to natural changes and/or induced changes (e.g. changes in land‐use type and climate) in habitat is consistent across trophic and taxonomic groups in the context of conservation policies for birch woodland and heather moorland. Location Mainland Scotland. Methods We sampled mesostigmatid mites, oribatid mites, fungi, bacteria and archaea in adjacent patches of birch woodland (dominated by Betula pubescens) and heather moorland (dominated by Calluna vulgaris) at 12 sites for which annual rainfall ranged between 713 and 2251 mm. Differences in community composition were visualized using non‐metric multidimensional scaling based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarities. The factors contributing to differences between habitats within sites were explored using general linear models and those among sites using redundancy analysis. Results The communities of all groups differed between habitats within sites, but only the oribatid mites and fungi differed consistently between habitats across sites. Within sites, dissimilarity in fungal communities was positively related to the difference in C. vulgaris cover between habitats, whereas dissimilarities in bacteria and archaea were positively related to differences in soil pH and C:N ratio between habitats, respectively. Main conclusions The influence of vegetation type and soil properties differed between groups of soil organisms, albeit in a predictable manner, across the 12 sites. Organisms directly associated with plants (fungi), and organisms with microhabitat and resource preferences (Oribatida) were strongly responsive to changes in habitat type. The response of organisms not directly associated with plants (bacteria, archaea) depended on differences in soil properties, while organisms with less clear microhabitat and resource preferences (Mesostigmata) were not strongly responsive to either vegetation type or soil properties. These results show that it is possible to predict the impact of habitat change on specific soil organisms depending on their ecology. Moreover, the community composition of all groups was related to variation in precipitation within the study area, which shows that external factors, such as those caused by climate change, can have a direct effect on belowground communities.

Abstract:Alterations of microbial communities have evident impacts on development, digestion, fecundity, metabolism, immunity, and diverse other biological functions of their hosts. Yet, the factors affecting microbial communities associated with wild species often remain uncharacterized. For example, the impact of the host’s habitat degradation due to anthropogenic activities has received little attention, which contrasts with the large literature showing how such habitat degradation is at least partly responsible for the on-going global patterns of macro-biodiversity erosion. Here, we use metacommunities of herbivorous insect species specialized in feeding on in the fragmented landscape of the Åland Islands, Finland, as a model system to test whether and how bacterial communities associated with wild species change along a gradient of habitat degradation. We evaluated microbial species diversity and community composition in two sympatric insect species sampled from local meadow habitats with various levels of human disturbance within or around these habitats (e.g. forests, roads, agriculture fields, buildings). Counter to our expectations, we found that bacterial diversity can increase with habitat degradation, with individuals from more degraded habitats hosting more rare bacterial species. In contrast, as the dominant microbial species remain similar across habitats, the community composition and function of the microbiota persist under habitat degradation. In this system, the strength of human activities might induce changes in habitat heterogeneity rather than changes in overall habitat quality, thus allowing local insects to encounter and host more rare microbes rather than trigger local microbial extinction.

Rewetting and Drainage of Nutrient-Poor Peatlands Indicated by Specific Bacterial Membrane Fatty Acids and a Repeated Sampling of Stable Isotopes (δ15N, δ13C)

Abstract:Peatland degradation impairs soil functions such as carbon storage and the existence of biodiversity hotspots. Therefore, and in view of the ongoing climate change, an efficient method of evaluating peatland hydrology and the success of restoration efforts is needed. To understand the role of microbial groups in biogeochemical cycling, gaseous loss and isotopic fractionation that lead to specific isotopic depth patterns (δ 13 C, δ 15 N), we integrated previously published stable isotope data with a membrane fatty acid (mFA) analysis related to various microbial groups that are known to be common in peatlands. We performed two sampling campaigns to verify the observed stable isotope depth trends in nutrient-poor peatlands in Northern Europe. Cores were taken from adjacent drained (or rewetted) and undrained sites. Fungal-derived mFA abundance was highest in the uppermost part of the drained layer. We found increasing bacterial-derived mFA concentrations with depth peaking in the middle of the drained layers, which correlates with a δ 15 N peak of bulk material. The results support our hypothesis that changing peatland hydrology induce a shift in microbial community and metabolism processes and is therefore also imprinted in stable isotope values. Under waterlogged conditions overall levels of microbial-derived mFAs were generally low. Drained layers showed simultaneous changes in microbial abundance and composition and depth trends in stable isotope bulk values. Bacteria, particularly acidobacteria, can be expected to dominate increased denitrification with low oxygen saturation accompanied by increased δ 15 N bulk values in the remaining substrate. Interestingly, cores from recent rewetted peatlands show no depth trend of δ 15 N in the layers grown under rewetting conditions; this is congruent with relatively low concentrations of microbial-derived mFAs. Hence, we conclude that stable isotopes, especially δ 15 N values, reflect changing microbial metabolic processes, which differ between drained and undrained - and especially also for recent rewetted–peatlands. As today stable isotope measurements are routine measurements, these findings enable us to get cost- and time efficient reliable information of drainage and restoration success.

Abstract:The last 20 years have witnessed unprecedented advances in revealing the microbiomes underpinning important processes in natural and human associated environments. Recent large-scale metagenome surveys record the variety of microbial life in the oceans, wastewater, human gut, and earth, with compilations encompassing thousands of public datasets. So far, large-scale microbiome studies either miss functional information or consistency in sample processing, and although they may cover thousands of locations, these are missing resolution, sparsely located, or lacking metadata. Here, we present Microflora Danica, an atlas of Danish environmental microbiomes, encompassing 10,686 shotgun metagenomes and 449 full-length 16S and 18S rRNA datasets linked to a detailed 5 level habitat classification scheme. We determine that while human-disturbed habitats have high alpha diversity, the same species reoccur, revealing hidden homogeneity and underlining the importance of natural systems for total species (gamma) diversity. In-depth studies of nitrifiers, a functional group closely linked to climate change, challenge existing perceptions regarding habitat preference and discover several novel nitrifiers as more abundant than canonical nitrifiers. Together, the Microflora Danica dataset provides an unprecedented resource and the foundation for answering fundamental questions underlying microbial ecology: what drives microbial diversity, distribution and function.

Detection and Quantification of the Soil Microbial Biomass – Impacts on the Management of Agricultural Soils

Abstract:Studies of single soil organisms, while useful in specialized cases, e.g. Rhizobia and mycohrrizae, do not yield information on the functioning of the soil ecosystem. This is because most important soil processes, e.g. carbon and nitrogen mineralization, depend upon interactions between entire suites of organisms, many of which still await identification and most of which remain unculturable. For many purposes, treating the soil microbial community as a single, undifferentiated unit, the soil microbial biomass (defined as all soil organisms <5000 μm3 volume), has much to commend it. It is analogous to studying the forest rather than an individual tree and uniquely permits an understanding of the soil–plant–microbe system as a whole, rather than studying only a small part. The present paper reviews the development of methods to measure microbial dynamics over the last century, the evolution of biomass methodologies and how they have helped the study of crucial soil processes such as nutrient and carbon cycling. Possible future directions for this research are also discussed and an explanation set forth of why the manipulation of this huge population (easily comprising 10 tonnes per hectare of living microbial cells in UK arable soils) has, so far, proved elusive.

Abstract:Soil biota are essential for many soil processes and functions, yet there are increasing pressures on soil biodiversity and soil degradation remains a pertinent issue. The sustainable management of soils requires soil monitoring, including biological indicators, to be able to relate land use and management to soil functioning and ecosystem services. Since the 1990s, biological soil parameters have been assessed in an increasing number of field trials and monitoring programmes across Europe. The development and effective use of meaningful and widely applicable bio-indicators, however, continue to be challenging tasks. This paper aims to provide an overview of current knowledge on the characterization and assessment of soil biodiversity. Examples of biological soil indicators and monitoring approaches are presented. Furthermore the value of databases for developing a better understanding of the relationship between soil management, soil functions and ecosystem services is discussed. We conclude that integration of monitoring approaches and data sets offers good opportunities for advancing ecological theory as well as application of such knowledge by land managers and other decision makers.

Abstract:The EU Habitat Directive adopted in 1992, requires member states of the European Union to protect species and habitats considered to be of 'Community Interest' and listed in annexes to the directive. The appropriate environmental assessment of "plans and projects" is an important part of the conservation process. Despite several amendments and guidelines supporting the implementation of the Habitat Directive, science based operational procedures, indicators, and impact criteria for assessing potential negative impacts on marine Natura 2000 areas are still lacking. The lack of a generic and operational methodology complicates the management of plans and projects with potential impact on marine Natura 2000 areas. In this study, generic methods for the assessment of marine aquaculture in the inner Danish waters in relation to Natura 2000 areas was developed and applied for assessment of nine existing marine fin fish farms, in accordance with the latest methodological guidance on the provisions of Article 6(3) and (4) of the Habitat Directive. The applied methodology is based on high resolution 3D hydrodynamic- and ecosystem modelling (MIKE by DHI), that describes the dynamical physical, chemical, and biogeochemical processes and changes of marine ecosystems in time and space. To our knowledge, this is the first study that formulates operational biological quality elements, key indicators, concrete and generic impact criteria, and assessment procedures for operational assessment across several distinct marine habitat types. The method represents a generic, operational, transparent, and science-based assessment tool, that simplifies management, and is widely applicable for quantification of environmental impacts from various marine activities and eutrophication related pressures across geographical zones and different marine habitat types in marine Natura 2000 areas.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Soil microbial diversity has major influences on ecosystem functions and services. However, due to its complexity and uneven distribution of abundant and rare taxa, quantification of soil microbial diversity remains challenging and thereby impeding its integration into long-term monitoring programs. Using metabarcoding, we analyzed soil bacterial and fungal communities at 30 long-term soil monitoring sites from the three land-use types arable land, permanent grassland, and forest with a yearly sampling between snowmelt and first fertilization over five years. Unlike soil microbial biomass and alpha-diversity, microbial community compositions and structures were site- and land-use-specific with CAP reclassification success rates of 100%. The temporally stable site core communities included 38.5% of bacterial and 33.1% of fungal OTUs covering 95.9% and 93.2% of relative abundances. We characterized bacterial and fungal core communities and their land-use associations at the family-level. In general, fungal families revealed stronger land-use associations as compared to bacteria. This is likely due to a stronger vegetation effect on fungal core taxa, while bacterial core taxa were stronger related to soil properties. The assessment of core communities can be used to form cultivation-independent reference lists of microbial taxa, which may facilitate the development of microbial indicators for soil quality and the use of soil microbiota for long-term soil biomonitoring.

Coastal habitats as surrogates for taxonomic, functional and trophic structures of benthic faunal communities

Abstract:Due to human impact, there is extensive degradation and loss of marine habitats, which calls for measures that incorporate taxonomic as well as functional and trophic aspects of biodiversity. Since such data is less easily quantifiable in nature, the use of habitats as surrogates or proxies for biodiversity is on the rise in marine conservation and management. However, there is a critical gap in knowledge of whether pre-defined habitat units adequately represent the functional and trophic structure of communities. We also lack comparisons of different measures of community structure in terms of both between- (β) and within-habitat (α) variability when accounting for species densities. Thus, we evaluated a priori defined coastal habitats as surrogates for traditional taxonomic, functional and trophic zoobenthic community structure. We focused on four habitats (bare sand, canopy-forming algae, seagrass above- and belowground), all easily delineated in nature and defined through classification systems. We analyzed uni- and multivariate data on species and trait diversity as well as stable isotope ratios of benthic macrofauna. A good fit between habitat types and taxonomic and functional structure was found, although habitats were more similar functionally. This was attributed to within-habitat heterogeneity so when habitat divisions matched the taxonomic structure, only bare sand was functionally distinct. The pre-defined habitats did not meet the variability of trophic structure, which also proved to differentiate on a smaller spatial scale. The quantification of trophic structure using species density only identified an epi- and an infaunal unit. To summarize the results we present a conceptual model illustrating the match between pre-defined habitat types and the taxonomic, functional and trophic community structure. Our results show the importance of including functional and trophic aspects more comprehensively in marine management and spatial planning.
Anthropogenic vs. natural habitats: higher microbial biodiversity pays the trade-off of lower connectivity

Abstract:Climate change and anthropogenic disturbances are known to influence soil biodiversity. The objectives of this study were to compare the community composition, species coexistence patterns, and ecological assembly processes of soil microbial communities in a paired setting featuring a natural and an anthropogenic ecosystem facing each other at identical climatic, pedological, and vegetational conditions. A transect gradient from forest to seashore allowed for sampling across different habitats within both sites. The field survey was carried out at two adjacent strips of land within the Po River delta lagoon system (Veneto, Italy) one of which is protected within a natural preserve and the other has been converted for decades into a tourist resort. The anthropogenic pressure interestingly led to an increase in the α-diversity of soil microbes but was accompanied by a reduction in β-diversity. The community assembly mechanisms of microbial communities differentiate in natural and anthropic ecosystems: for bacteria, in natural ecosystems deterministic variables and homogeneous selection play a main role (51.92%), while stochastic dispersal limitation (52.15%) is critical in anthropized ecosystems; for fungi, stochastic dispersal limitation increases from 38.1% to 66.09% passing from natural to anthropized ecosystems. We are on calcareous sandy soils and in more natural ecosystems a variation of topsoil pH favors the deterministic selection of bacterial communities, while a divergence of K availability favors stochastic selection. In more anthropized ecosystems, the deterministic variable selection is influenced by the values of SOC. Microbial networks in the natural system exhibited higher numbers of nodes and network edges, as well as higher averages of path length, weighted degree, clustering coefficient, and density than its equivalent sites in the more anthropically impacted environment. The latter on the other hand presented a stronger modularity. Although the influence of stochastic processes increases in anthropized habitats, niche-based selection also proves to impose constraints on communities. Overall, the functionality of the relationships between groups of microorganisms co-existing in communities appeared more relevant to the concept of functional biodiversity in comparison to the plain number of their different taxa. Fewer but functionally more organized lineages displayed traits underscoring a better use of the resources than higher absolute numbers of taxa when those are not equally interconnected in their habitat exploitation. However, considering that network complexity can have important implications for microbial stability and ecosystem multifunctionality, the extinction of complex ecological interactions in anthropogenic habitats may impair important ecosystem services that soils provide us.

Abstract:Humans impact terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, yet many broad-scale studies have found no systematic, negative biodiversity changes (for example, decreasing abundance or taxon richness). Here we show that mixed biodiversity responses may arise because community metrics show variable responses to anthropogenic impacts across broad spatial scales. We first quantified temporal trends in anthropogenic impacts for 1,365 riverine invertebrate communities from 23 European countries, based on similarity to least-impacted reference communities. Reference comparisons provide necessary, but often missing, baselines for evaluating whether communities are negatively impacted or have improved (less or more similar, respectively). We then determined whether changing impacts were consistently reflected in metrics of community abundance, taxon richness, evenness and composition. Invertebrate communities improved, that is, became more similar to reference conditions, from 1992 until the 2010s, after which improvements plateaued. Improvements were generally reflected by higher taxon richness, providing evidence that certain community metrics can broadly indicate anthropogenic impacts. However, richness responses were highly variable among sites, and we found no consistent responses in community abundance, evenness or composition. These findings suggest that, without sufficient data and careful metric selection, many common community metrics cannot reliably reflect anthropogenic impacts, helping explain the prevalence of mixed biodiversity trends.

Abstract:Understanding the extent of heterogeneity in soil microbial community structure and function at different scales within vegetation communities is critical to designing appropriate sampling protocols. Environmental factors (e.g. disturbance) make sampling in the riparian zone particularly challenging as vegetation communities are highly heterogeneous. To assess whether heterogeneity in soil and vegetation factors is reflected in microbial communities, a study was conducted in a riparian area in southern Australia. Nine quadrats were established encompassing different environmental conditions. Within quadrats physical, chemical and biological soil properties were analysed at two depths (top-soil = 0–10 cm and sub-soil = 20–30 cm), and floristic composition of ground cover, sub-canopy and canopy vegetation assessed. Soil biological analyses included microbial community composition (genetic analysis using ITS and 16S regions), and function (microbial metabolic activity using EcoPlates). Variation in soil microbial communities (fungi, bacteria, archaea) was related to differences in vegetation factors, particularly sub-canopy, and to a lesser extent, soil chemical properties. Relationships between variation in microbial communities and vegetation composition were stronger in top-soil than sub-soil. These observations were consistent for fungal communities excluding the phylum Glomeromycota, where the relationship was stronger with ground cover and only for top-soil. Variation in soil microbial community function was not related to variation in microbial community composition, soil physicochemical properties or vegetation factors. Our findings suggest there is little variation in the composition of soil microbial communities within areas with similar vegetation, and a small sampling effort would be needed to adequately describe the characteristics of such soil communities.

Abstract:Abstract Habitat type is a strong determinant of microbial composition. Habitat interfaces, such as the boundary between aquatic and terrestrial systems, present unique combinations of abiotic factors for microorganisms to contend with. Aside from the spillover of certain harmful microorganisms from agricultural soils into water (e.g. fecal coliform bacteria), we know little about the extent of soil-water habitat switching across microbial taxa. In this study, we developed a proof-of-concept system to facilitate the capture of putatively generalist microorganisms that can colonize and persist in both soil and river water. We aimed to examine the phylogenetic breadth of putative habitat switchers and how this varies across different source environments. Microbial composition was primarily driven by recipient environment type, with the strongest phylogenetic signal seen at the order level for river water colonizers. We also identified more microorganisms colonizing river water when soil was collected from a habitat interface (i.e. soil at the side of an intermittently flooded river, compared to soil collected further from water sources), suggesting that environmental interfaces could be important reservoirs of microbial habitat generalists. Continued development of experimental systems that actively capture microorganisms that thrive in divergent habitats could serve as a powerful tool for identifying and assessing the ecological distribution of microbial generalists.

Abstract:Summary As a result of increasingly intensified agricultural practices in Europe over the last century, agroecosystems have experienced severe biodiversity declines. Among the species experiencing negative population trajectories in agricultural habitats are meadow and farmland birds, which have suffered a loss in both habitat and food availability in cultivated fields. In Denmark, biotope plans (a requirement to establish small agro-environmental habitats on properties with stocking of game birds) have been implemented as a measure to mitigate biodiversity declines in the agricultural landscape and, in this paper, we investigate to what extent these initiatives fulfil the intended purpose with respect to birds in the breeding season. We demonstrate that some initiatives like hedgerows, areas of open vegetation, scrub, and lakes seemed to increase avian diversity locally, but also that other measures such as vegetation strips, grass strips, and bare soil strips had little effect given the current implementation of these initiatives. Benefitting species were mostly scrub- and woodland species that now inhabited previously open landscapes after the establishment of suitable habitats, and the initiatives failed to show clear positive effects on meadow birds and farmland birds for which they were originally intended. The most commonly registered species in our data set was (released) Pheasant Phasianus colchicus, which emphasised that the stocking of game birds can have a clear effect on avian species composition in areas where this practice is exercised. Future studies are needed to clarify how this stocking may affect local biodiversity of different taxonomic groups.

Micro-Environmental Variation in Soil Microbial Biodiversity in Forest Frontier Ecosystems—Implications for Sustainability Assessments

Abstract:Soil health indicators based on microbial biodiversity are increasingly used in agricultural sustainability assessments. However, little is known about how microbial communities vary within micro-environmental gradients across different land uses, which is crucial for designing field sampling and monitoring protocols. Our objective was to assess how soil microbial communities changed with soil depth and spatial distance across land-use types. We sampled soils in four spatial distances (within 0.1–70 m) and four depths (within 0–40 cm) in forests, grasslands, and horticultural lands, and combined 16S rRNA gene sequencing, DNA quantification and soil chemical characterization to explore micro-environmental variation in microbial biomass, α-β-diversity, and communities' assembly processes. Depth and spatial distance had differential effects on microbial biodiversity within different land uses. Microbial biomass was most sensitive to depth, α-diversity to spatial distance, and β-diversity to both depth and spatial distance. Deterministic processes dominate microbial communities' assembly along depth in all land uses, which is a promising result for developing soil quality indicators based on microbial biodiversity. Overall, our results suggest that collecting soil samples separated by at least 12 m is adequate to capture biodiversity changes across land uses. However, collecting randomly within the first 10 cm is recommended for native forests, while systematic sampling within the first 20 cm is advised for grasslands and horticultural lands. Our findings underscore the need for land use-specific sampling frameworks in soil life-based sustainability assessments for meaningful regional comparisons.

Abstract:Temporal and spatial vegetation structure has impact on biodiversity qualities. Yet, current schemes of biotope mapping do only to a limited extend incorporate these factors in the mapping. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the application of a modified biotope mapping scheme that includes temporal and spatial vegetation structure. A refined scheme was developed based on a biotope classification, and applied to a green structure system in Helsingborg city in southern Sweden. It includes four parameters of vegetation structure: continuity of forest cover, age of dominant trees, horizontal structure, and vertical structure. The major green structure sites were determined by interpretation of panchromatic aerial photographs assisted with a field survey. A set of biotope maps was constructed on the basis of each level of modified classification. An evaluation of the scheme included two aspects in particular: comparison of species richness between long-continuity and short-continuity forests based on identification of woodland continuity using ancient woodland indicators (AWI) species and related historical documents, and spatial distribution of animals in the green space in relation to vegetation structure. The results indicate that (1) the relationship between forest continuity: according to verification of historical documents, the richness of AWI species was higher in long-continuity forests; Simpson’s diversity was significantly different between long- and short-continuity forests; the total species richness and Shannon’s diversity were much higher in long-continuity forests shown a very significant difference. (2) The spatial vegetation structure and age of stands influence the richness and abundance of the avian fauna and rabbits, and distance to the nearest tree and shrub was a strong determinant of presence for these animal groups. It is concluded that continuity of forest cover, age of dominant trees, horizontal and vertical structures of vegetation should now be included in urban biotope classifications.

Abstract:An assessment of the biodiversity of soils was a component of the Countryside Survey 2000 (CS2000). This was the first integrated survey of soil biota and chemical properties at a national scale. A total of 1052 soil samples were collected across Great Britain during CS2000 and analysed for a range of soil microbial and invertebrate characteristics resulting in the production of a series of robust datasets. A principal objective was to use these datasets to investigate relationships between soil biota and environmental factors such as geographical location, vegetation, land use, land cover, soil type and pollutant levels as first stages in characterising the inherent biodiversity of British soils and investigating the potential of soil biodiversity as indicators of soil health at a regional or national scale. Preliminary results for culturable heterotrophic, invertebrate taxa, Acari, Collembola and Oribatid mites are presented here to illustrate the nature of the data collected and the patterns of soil biodiversity in relation to large-scale regional, vegetation and soil characteristics across the British countryside.
Metrics based on habitat area and condition are poor proxies for invertebrate biodiversity

Abstract:There is increasing demand for standardised, easy to use metrics to assess progress towards achieving biodiversity targets and the effectiveness of ecological compensation schemes. Biodiversity metrics based on combining habitat area and habitat condition scores are proliferating rapidly, but there is limited evidence on how they relate to ecological outcomes. Here, we test the relationship between the statutory biodiversity metric used for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in England (and as the basis for new biodiversity credit systems around the world) and invertebrate richness, abundance, and community composition. We find that the combined area condition BNG metric does not capture the value of arable farmland and grassland sites for invertebrate biodiversity: invertebrate communities were highly variable across sites that had the same type and condition under the BNG metric. There was no significant relationship between invertebrate abundance or species richness and metric scores. Our results highlight the need to incorporate factors beyond habitat type and condition into site evaluations, and to complement metric use with species based surveys.

The Dangers of Being a Small, Oligotrophic and Light Demanding Freshwater Plant across a Spatial and Historical Eutrophication Gradient in Southern Scandinavia

Abstract:European freshwater habitats have experienced a severe loss of plant diversity, regionally and locally, over the last century or more. One important and well-established driver of change is eutrophication, which has increased with rising population density and agricultural intensification. However, reduced disturbance of lake margins may have played an additional key role. The geographical variation in water chemistry, which has set the scene for - and interacted with - anthropogenic impact, is much less well understood. We took advantage of some recently completed regional plant distribution surveys, relying on hundreds of skilled citizen scientists, and analyzed the hydrophyte richness to environment relations in five contiguous South-Scandinavian regions. For three of the regions, we also assessed changes to the freshwater flora over the latest 50-80 years. We found a considerable variation in background total phosphorus concentrations and alkalinity, both within and between regions. The prevalence of functional groups differed between regions in accordance with the environmental conditions and the species' tolerance to turbid waters. Similarly, the historical changes within regions followed the same trend in correspondence to the altered environmental conditions over time. Small submerged species decreased relative to tall submerged and floating-leaved species along the regional and historical eutrophication gradients. These changes were accompanied by systematically greater relative abundance of species of higher phosphorus prevalence. We conclude that species traits in close correspondence with anthropogenic impacts are the main determinants of local, regional and historical changes of species distribution and occupancy, while pure biogeography plays a minor role. Conservation measures, such as re-oligotrophication and re-established disturbance regimes through grazing and water level fluctuations, may help reduce the tall reed vegetation, restore the former richness of the freshwater flora and safeguard red-listed species, although extended time delays are anticipated in nutrient-rich regions, in which species only survive at minute abundance in isolated refugia.

Ecosystem dynamics in wet heathlands: spatial and temporal effects of environmental drivers on the vegetation

Abstract:To understand and estimate the effects of environmental drivers on wet heathland vegetation, pin-point cover data from 42 sites sampled during a 15-year period was regressed onto environmental variables (nitrogen deposition, soil pH, soil C-N ratio, soil type, precipitation and grazing) in a spatio-temporal structural equation model using a Bayesian hierarchical model structure with latent variables to model the effect of measurement and sampling uncertainties. The results suggest that the modelled environmental variables have various regulating effects on the large-scale spatial variation as well as plant community dynamics in wet heathlands. Most noticeably, nitrogen deposition and yearly precipitation had relatively large and opposite effects on the characteristic species Erica tetralix and Molinia caerulea, where nitrogen deposition had negative effects on E. tetralix and positive effects on M. caerulea. The results of this study differed in important qualitative aspects from the findings of an earlier study where comparable data from a shorter time-series (7 years instead of 15 years) were analyzed with a similar model, which suggests that relatively long time-series are needed for studying ecosystem dynamics. Furthermore, it was concluded that the effect of nitrogen deposition on plant community dynamics mainly was through direct effects, whereas the effect of soil type on plant community dynamics was both direct and indirect mediated by the effect of soil type on soil pH. It was concluded that the modeled environmental variables are sufficient for predicting the average plant community dynamics of wet heathlands. However, caution are required if the fitted model is used for generating local ecological predictions as input to a process of generating adaptive management plans for specific wet heathland sites. Moreover, the results suggest that the ratio between the two species E. tetralix and M. caerulea may be used as an indicator for the conservation status of wet heathlands.
