Abstract:Abstract The efficient use of renewable high-energy radiation (X/γ-rays or accelerated e ‒ ) as the energy input for the chemical transformation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water to energy-rich fuels holds new promise for a carbon-neutral, sustainable energy economy; however, such processes are challenging to implement, and require the assistance of catalysts capable of sensitizing the secondary electron scattering and providing active metal sites to bind intermediates. Herein, we report that atomic Cu-Ni dual-metal-sites embedded in a metal-organic framework matrix enable efficient and selective (~ 98%) conversion of CO 2 to CH 3 OH in irradiated aqueous solutions. The reaction is initiated by the direct generation of CO 2 •‒ radicals via aqueous electrons attachment, followed by a series of interfacial reactions. We showed that the UiO-66(Hf) matrix serves as a radiation sensitizer to break electron yield limitation in water radiolysis, dramatically promoting CO 2 activation and conversion efficiency. With the synergistic metal centers and a hydroxyl radical scavenger, we achieved stable and selective CH 3 OH production over multiple irradiation cycles. Pulse radiolysis experiments with theoretical calculations revealed the transient kinetics occurred on the nanosecond timescale and cascade hydrogenation steps. Our study highlighted an unprecedented catalytic route to produce CH 3 OH with CO 2 feedstock and introduced a desirable atomic structure to improve performance.
Selective and Stable CO2 Electroreduction to CH4 via Electronic Metal–Support Interaction upon Decomposition/Redeposition of MOF

Abstract:A copper‐based metal‐organic framework is synthesized via a solvent‐free method. Upon CO2 electroreduction, it undergoes in situ decomposition/redeposition to form abundant interfacial sites between copper nanoparticles and amorphous carbon supports, which stabilize the key intermediates for CH4 formation. Stable production of CH4 with Faradaic efficiency of ≈55% is achieved for 12.5 h. The CO2 electroreduction to fuels is a feasible approach to provide renewable energy sources. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct experimental and theoretical investigations on various catalyst design strategies, such as electronic metal–support interaction, to improve the catalytic selectivity. Here a solvent‐free synthesis method is reported to prepare a copper (Cu)‐based metal–organic framework (MOF) as the precursor. Upon electrochemical CO2 reduction in aqueous electrolyte, it undergoes in situ decomposition/redeposition processes to form abundant interfaces between Cu nanoparticles and amorphous carbon supports. This Cu/C catalyst favors the selective and stable production of CH4 with a Faradaic efficiency of ≈55% at −1.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for 12.5 h. The density functional theory calculation reveals the crucial role of interfacial sites between Cu and amorphous carbon support in stabilizing the key intermediates for CO2 reduction to CH4. The adsorption of COOH* and CHO* at the Cu/C interface is up to 0.86 eV stronger than that on Cu(111), thus promoting the formation of CH4. Therefore, it is envisioned that the strategy of regulating electronic metal–support interaction can improve the selectivity and stability of catalyst toward a specific product upon electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The C‐C coupling of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to generate acetic acid (CH3COOH) represents a highly atom‐efficient chemical conversion, fostering the comprehensive utilization of greenhouse gases. However, the inherent thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of CH4 and CO2 present obstacles to achieving efficient and selective conversion at room temperature. Our study reveals that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and hydrated electrons (eaq‐) produced by water radiolysis can effectively activate CH4 and CO2, yielding methyl radicals (·CH3) and carbon dioxide radicals (·CO2‐) that facilitate the production of CH3COOH at ambient temperature. The introduction of radiation‐synthesized CuO‐anchored TiO2 bifunctional catalyst could further enhance reaction efficiency and selectivity remarkably by boosting radiation absorption and radical stability, resulting in a concentration of 7.1 mmol·L‐1 of CH3COOH with near‐unity selectivity (>95%). These findings offer valuable insights for catalyst design and implementation in radiation‐induced chemical conversion.
Ultra-thin Two-Dimensional Trimetallic Metal–Organic Framework for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO 2

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemicals is a very effective way to solve the greenhouse effect, improve the utilization ratio of resources, and cope with the energy crisis. However, the low catalytic activity and poor product selectivity of the catalyst have been largely restricting its large-scale application. Herein, we successfully synthesized an ultra-thin two-dimensional trimetallic metal–organic framework (NiZrCu-BDC) nanosheet as a photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, and the average thickness of NiZrCu-BDC is about 4 nm. The NiZrCu-BDC nanosheet has the ability to reduce CO2 to methanol (41.05 μmol h–1 g–1) and ethanol (36.62 μmol h–1 g–1), and the turnover frequency of NiZrCu-BDC is 34 times more than that of NiZr-BDC. Zr and Cu doping enables enrichment of Ni surface charges to promote CO2 chemisorption, and the ultra-thin structure can shorten the electron transport path. Meanwhile, the electron density of Ni catalytical sites in NiZrCu-BDC is enhanced by doping Cu and Zr to facilitate COOH* and CHO formation, which are deemed as key species for CO2 reduction reactions to liquid products. This work provides further insights into the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 based on the multi-metal–organic framework.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been acknowledged as a promising strategy to relieve carbon emissions by converting CO2 to essential chemicals. Despite significant progresses that have been made in neutral and alkaline media, the implementation of CO2RR in acidic conditions remains challenging due to the harsh conditions, especially in producing high-value multicarbon products. Here, we report that Cu-btca (btca = benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructures can act as a stable catalyst for the CO2RR in an acidic environment. The Cu-btca MOF undergoes phase transformation and morphology evolution during electrolysis, forming a stable porous Cu-btca MOF network. The resultant MOF network exhibits excellent selectivity toward ethylene and multicarbon products with Faradaic efficiencies of 51.2% and 81.9%, respectively, in a strong acidic electrolyte with a flow cell at 300 mA/cm2. Mechanism studies uncover that the Cu-btca MOF network can limit the proton reduction to suppress hydrogen evolution and maintain high local *CO concentration to promote CO2RR. Theoretical calculations suggest that two adjacent Cu sites in the Cu-btca MOF provide a favorable microenvironment for carbon-carbon coupling, facilitating the multicarbon production. This work reveals that rational structure control of MOFs can enable highly selective and efficient CO2 electroreduction to multicarbon products in strong acidic conditions toward practical applications.
Facile Top-Down Strategy for Direct Metal Atomization and Coordination Achieving a High Turnover Number in CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Developing unique single atoms as active sites is vitally important to boosting the efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but directly atomizing metal particles and simultaneously adjusting the configuration of individual atoms remain challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy at a relatively low temperature (500 °C) to access the in situ metal atomization and coordination adjustment via the thermo-driven gaseous acid. Using this strategy, the pyrolytic gaseous acid (HCl) from NH4Cl could downsize the large metal particles into corresponding ions, which subsequently anchored onto the surface defects of a nitrogen-rich carbon (NC) matrix. Additionally, the low-temperature treatment-induced C═O motifs within the interlayer of NC could bond with the discrete Fe sites in a perpendicular direction and finally create stabilized Fe-N4O species with high valence status (Fe3+) on the shallow surface of the NC matrix. It was found that the Fe-N4O species can achieve a highly efficient CO2 conversion when accepting energetic electrons from both homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysts. The optimized sample achieves a maximum turnover number (TON) of 1494 within 1 h in CO generation with a high selectivity of 86.7% as well as excellent stability. Experimental and theoretical results unravel that high valence Fe sites in Fe-N4O species can promote the adsorption of CO2 and lower the formation barrier of key intermediate COOH* compared with the traditional Fe-N4 moiety with lower chemical valence. Our discovery provides new points of view in the construction of more efficient single-atom cocatalysts by considering the optimization of the atomic configuration for high-performance CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts possess attractive electro-catalytic activities for various chemical reactions owing to their favorable geometric and electronic structures compared to the bulk counterparts. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient approach to producing single atom copper immobilized MXene for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to methanol via selective etching of hybrid A layers (Al and Cu) in quaternary MAX phases (Ti-3(Al1-xCux)C-2) due to the different saturated vapor pressures of Al- and Cu-containing products. After selective etching of Al in the hybrid A layers, Cu atoms are well-preserved and simultaneously immobilized onto the resultant MXene with dominant surface functional group (Cl-x) on the outmost Ti layers (denoted as Ti3C2Clx) via Cu-O bonds. Consequently, the as-prepared single atom Cu catalyst exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency value of 59.1% to produce CH3OH and shows good electrocatalytic stability. On the basis of synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory calculations, the single atom Cu with unsaturated electronic structure (Cu delta+, 0 < delta < 2) delivers a low energy barrier for the rate-determining step (conversion of HCOOH* to absorbed CHO* intermediate), which is responsible for the efficient electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH3OH.
Engineering NH2‐Cu‐NH2 Triple‐atom Sites in Defective MOFs for Selective Overall Photoreduction of CO2 into CH3COCH3

Abstract:Selective photoreduction of CO2 to multicarbon products, is an important but challenging task, due to high CO2 activation barriers and insufficient catalytic sites for C–C coupling. Herein, a defect engineering strategy for incorporating copper sites into the connected nodes of defective metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2 for selective overall photo-reduction of CO2 into acetone. The Cu2+ site in well-modified CuN2O2 units served as a trapping site to capture electrons via efficient electron-hole separation, forming the active Cu+ site for CO2 reduction. Two NH2 groups in the CuN2O2 unit adsorb CO2 and cooperated with copper ion to functionalize as a triple atom catalytic site, each interacting with one CO2 molecule to strengthen the binding of *CO intermediate to catalytic site. The deoxygenated *CO attached to Cu site interacted with *CH3 fixed at one amino group to form the key intermediate CO*-CH3, which interacted with the third reduction intermediate on another amino group to produce acetone. Our photocatalyst realizes efficient overall CO2 reduction to C3 product acetone CH3COCH3 with an evolution rate of 70.9 μmol gcat-1 h-1 and a selectivity up to 97% without any adducts, offering a promising avenue for designing triple-atomic sites to producing C3 product from photosynthesis with water.

Abstract:Selective semihydrogenation of alkynes has been a long-term and significant target, yet it remains a great challenge. Herein, bimetallic nanoparticles in a metal-organic framework (MOF), i.e., CuPd@ZIF-8 composite, featuring a cubic CuPd core and a porous ZIF-8 shell, have been rationally fabricated for this end. Given the unique physicochemical properties, the Cu nanocubes can not only convert solar energy into heat to accelerate the reaction but also serve as the seed for in situ formation of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on their external surface to regulate the chemoselectivity of Pd active sites. The additional growth of the MOF shell is helpful to stabilize the CuPd core and offer regioselectivity via the steric hindrance effect. Ammonia borane provides active hydrogen species to significantly boost the hydrogenation and ensure the high selectivity. As a result, the CuPd@MOF exhibits high efficiency, featuring a turnover frequency (TOF, 6799 min(-1)) of 5-10(5) times higher than that in previous reports, and high chemo- and regioselectivity toward the semihydrogenation of alkynes, in the presence of NH3BH3 as a hydrogen source, under visible-light irradiation at ambient temperature.

Abstract:Selective conversion of CO2 to ethanol is of great interest but presents a significant challenge in forming a C–C bond while keeping a C–O bond intact throughout the process. Here, we report cooperative CuI sites on a Zr12 cluster of a metal–organic framework (MOF) for selective hydrogenation of CO2 to ethanol. With the assistance of an alkali cation, the spatially proximate Zr12-supported CuI centres activate hydrogen via bimetallic oxidative addition and promote C–C coupling to produce ethanol. The Cs+-modified MOF catalyst, in 10 hours, produces ethanol with >99% selectivity and a turnover number (based on all Cu atoms) of 4,080 in supercritical CO2, with 30 MPa of CO2 and 5 MPa of H2 at 85 °C, or a turnover number of 490 at 2 MPa of CO2/H2 (1/3) and 100 °C. Our work highlights the potential of using MOFs as a tunable platform to design earth-abundant metal catalysts for CO2 conversion.

Highly selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction into C2H4 enabled by metal-organic framework-derived catalysts with high Cu+ content

Abstract:The highly selective conversion of CO2 into valuable C2H4 is a highly important but particularly challenging reaction. Herein, the metal-organic frameworks MOF-74(Cu) with infinite Cu(II)-O chains and Cu-BTC (BTC=benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) with paddle-wheel binuclear Cu(II) clusters are used as precursors. These MOFs are reduced by NaBH4 to obtain Cu0/Cuδ+-based photocatalysts denoted as R-MOF-74(Cu) and R-Cu-BTC, respectively. Significantly, R-MOF-74(Cu) achieves a high selectivity of 90.2 % for C2H4 with a yield rate of 6.5 μmol g-1 within 5 h due to its high Cu+ content. To the best of our knowledge, this C2H4 product selectivity is a record high among all the photocatalysts reported so far for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In contrast, R-Cu-BTC only forms CO as a product with a cumulative yield of 0.7 μmol g-1 within 5 h. Photoelectrochemical characterization and electron paramagnetic resonance results show that R-MOF-74(Cu) has low interfacial transfer resistance, high photogenerated electron separation efficiency, and excellent CO2 activation and water oxidation performance. In addition, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to determine the possible reaction pathway from CO2 to C2H4 over R-MOF-74(Cu). This work demonstrates the great potential of MOF-derived photocatalysts for the conversion of CO2 into C2H4 and provides guidance for future photocatalyst development.
Stabilized Cuδ+-OH species on in situ reconstructed Cu nanoparticles for CO2-to-C2H4 conversion in neutral media

Abstract:Achieving large-scale electrochemical CO2 reduction to multicarbon products with high selectivity using membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers in neutral electrolyte is promising for carbon neutrality. However, the unsatisfactory multicarbon products selectivity and unclear reaction mechanisms in an MEA have hindered its further development. Here, we report a strategy that manipulates the interfacial microenvironment of Cu nanoparticles in an MEA to suppress hydrogen evolution reaction and enhance C2H4 conversion. In situ multimodal characterizations consistently reveal well-stabilized Cuδ+-OH species as active sites during MEA testing. The OH radicals generated in situ from water create a locally oxidative microenvironment on the copper surface, stabilizing the Cuδ+ species and leading to an irreversible and asynchronous change in morphology and valence, yielding high-curvature nanowhiskers. Consequently, we deliver a selective C2H4 production with a Faradaic efficiency of 55.6% ± 2.8 at 316 mA cm-2 in neutral media.

Abstract:Solar-driven highly efficient CO2 photoreduction by water oxidation to produce high-value-added chemical feedstocks of fuels remains extremely challenging. Over the past few decades, two types of reaction modes (solid–liquid or solid–gas) have been developed by researchers to achieve substrate-based photocatlytic CO2 reduction. In the absence of organic solvents, photosensitizers, and organic sacrificial agents, the solid–gas mode may be more suitable for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A facile hydrothermal method was used to fabricate a low-cost and photosensitive azobenzene tetracarboxylic acid-based metal–organic framework (MOF), PCN-250-Fe3, which offers the advantages of visible-light and CO2 adsorption and facilitates an electron-coupled proton transition. Notably, PCN-250-Fe3 exhibited a maximum photocatalytic activity of 16.32 μmol g–1 with ca. 77.57% selectivity in 4 h without the use of photosensitizers or organic sacrificial agents under visible-light irradiation. This photocatalytic performance is superior to that of most nonporphyrin-based MOF photocatalysts under solid–gas reaction conditions. This study provides unique insight into enhancing the efficiency of the photoreduction of CO2 to CH4 by pure water.

Abstract:Commercial application of CO2-to-fuel technology has been mainly restricted due to low-cut CO2 adsorption and activation by photocatalyst, thus contributing to low/impure fuel yield. Defect engineering of key CO2 activators onto excellent CO2 adsorbent along with in-situ & co-production of Hadatoms could address these issues. Herein, we report rapid conversion of CO2 to CH3OH in a photocatalytic system composed of CoxMoyZn1−x−yZIF-8 photocatalyst and NaBH4-assisted Hadatoms production. Doping of Co & Mo into ZIF-8 provided active centers for CO2 activation and structured highly efficient electron transport chains (ETCs) for selective conversion of continuous supply of CO2 into CH3OH (99%). Conversion of CO2 by CoxMoyZn1−x−yZIF-8 yields 9.96 mmole gcat-1 h-1 of CH3OH higher than reported ZIF-8 based photocatalyst in literature, and pristine ZIF-8, which only produced 94.2 μmole g-1 of carbon monoxide. Mechanistically, engineered doping of Co0.25/Mo0.25 in Zn-ZIF-8 enhanced visible light absorption and mechanized ETCs due to d-orbitals and multiple redox states, which largely expediated CO2 adsorption-activation. While in-situ & co-production of Hadatoms from NaBH4 and water spitting boost conversion of activated CO2 to CH3OH. Interestingly, the controlled release of Hadatoms from NaBH4 maintained a requisite charge gradient across ETCs, which was proven to be another reason for the high yield and selectivity of CH3OH.13CO2 analysis confirmed the source of C in CH3OH was supplied CO2, not by photocatalyst carbon that proved the stability of CoxMoyZn1−x−yZIF-8. Abstract:An ameliorative *CO adsorption and H2O activation strategy is realized via decorating different cocatalytic metal (Pt, Pd, and Au) on bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanostructures, which result in selective CO2 photoreduction to C2 hydrocarbons via *CHO intermediate manipulation. Selective CO2 photoreduction to C2 hydrocarbons is significant but limited by the inadequate adsorption strength of the reaction intermediates and low efficiency of proton transfer. Herein, an ameliorative *CO adsorption and H2O activation strategy is realized via decorating bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanostructures with different metal (Pt, Pd, and Au) species. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that distinct *CO binding energies and *H acquisition abilities of the metal cocatalysts mediate the CO2 reduction activity and hydrocarbon selectivity. The relatively moderate *CO adsorption and *H supply over Pd/BiOCl endows it with the lowest free energy to generate *CHO, leading to its highest activity of hydrocarbon production. Specifically, the Pt cocatalyst can efficiently participate in H2O dissociation to deliver more *H for facilitating the protonation of the *CHO and *CHOH, thereby favoring CH4 production with 76.51% selectivity. A lower *H supply over Pd/BiOCl and Au/BiOCl results in a large energy barrier for *CHO or *CHOH protonation and thus a more thermodynamically favored OC─CHO coupling pathway, which endows them with vastly increased C2 hydrocarbon selectivity of 81.21% and 92.81%, respectively. The understanding of efficient C2 hydrocarbon production in this study sheds light on how materials can be engineered for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterostructures, which exhibit enhanced or unexpected functionality and properties due to synergistic effects, are typically synthesized using post-synthetic strategies. However, several reported post-synthetic strategies remain unsatisfactory, considering issues such as damage to the crystallinity of MOFs, presence of impure phases, and high time and energy consumption. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a novel route for constructing MOF based heterostructures using radiation-induced post-synthesis, highlighting the merits of convenience, ambient conditions, large-scale production, and notable time and energy saving. Specifically, a new HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure was successfully synthesized by simply irradiating a methanol solution dispersed of HKUST-1 with gamma ray under ambient conditions. The Copper source of Cu2O was directly derived from in situ radiation etching and reduction of the parent HKUST-1, without the use of any additional copper reagents. Significantly, the resulting HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure exhibits remarkable catalytic performance, with a catalytic rate constant nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the parent HKUST-1.

Abstract:In a longitudinal study, we studied the variability in bronchial responsiveness (BR) to methacholine in aluminum potroom workers suffering from work-related asthma-like symptoms (WASTH) and in symptom-free workers. In the index group, 26 men suffering from WASTH were selected from a cross-sectional survey. The reference group comprised 45 symptom-free men recruited from the enrollment of new employees. Bronchial responsiveness was expressed as the dose-response slope (DRS) of the line through origin and the last data point. The standard deviation of the log-transformed DRS was positively associated with symptom score (P = .012) and the mean BR (P < .001). Our results indicate that the severity of respiratory symptoms in aluminum potroom workers with WASTH reflects the variability in BR.
Selective CO2 Photoreduction Enabled by Water-stable Cu-based Metal-organic Framework Nanoribbons

Abstract:The goal of photocatalytic CO2 reduction system is to achieve near 100 % selectivity for the desirable product with reasonably high yield and stability. Here, two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks are constructed with abundant and uniform monometallic active sites, aiming to be an emerged platform for efficient and selective CO2 reduction. As an example, water-stable Cu-based metal-organic framework nanoribbons with coordinatively unsaturated single CuII sites are first fabricated, evidenced by X-ray diffraction patterns and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In situ Fourier-transform infrared spectra and Gibbs free energy calculations unravel the formation of the key intermediate COOH* and CO* is an exothermic and spontaneous process, whereas the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is endothermic and non-spontaneous, which accounts for the selective CO2 reduction. As a result, in an aqueous solution containing 1 mol L-1 KHCO3 and without any sacrifice reagent, the water-stable Cu-based metal-organic framework nanoribbons exhibited an average CO yield of 82 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with the selectivity up to 97 % during 72 h cycling test, which is comparable to other reported photocatalysts under similar conditions.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to high-value chemicals is an attractive approach to mitigate climate change, but it remains a great challenge to produce a specific product selectively by IR light. Hence, UiO-66/Co9S8 composite is designed to couple the advantages of metallic photocatalysts and porous CO2 adsorbers for IR-light-driven CO2-to-CH4 conversion. The metallic nature of Co9S8 endows UiO-66/Co9S8 with exceptional IR light absorption, while UiO-66 dramatically enhances its local CO2 concentration, revealed by finite-element method simulations. As a result, Co9S8 or UiO-66 alone does not show observable IR-light photocatalytic activity, whereas UiO-66/Co9S8 exhibits exceptional activity. The CH4 evolution rate over UiO-66/Co9S8 reaches 25.7 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with ca.100% selectivity under IR light irradiation, outperforming most reported catalysts under similar reaction conditions. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy spectra verify the presence of two distinct Co sites and confirm the existence of metallic Co & horbar;Co bond in Co9S8. Energy diagrams analysis and transient absorption spectra manifest that CO2 reduction mainly occurs on Co9S8 for UiO-66/Co9S8, while density functional theory calculations demonstrate that high-electron-density Co1 sites are the key active sites, possessing lower energy barriers for further protonation of *CO, leading to the ultra-high selectivity toward CH4.
