Abstract:An integrated biorefinery will transition towards a comprehensive refining and zero-waste utilization process of all the biomass components, including the largely wasted or ignored inorganics. Here, we report an effective process of combined valorization of both organic components and inorganics. Small molecules from carbohydrates (32.5 wt%) and lignin (22.5 wt%) were obtained under catalyst-free conditions, in addition to a large amount of alkoxysilanes (>80 mol%) from silicon in rice straw. The connection of silicon with other components in rice straw was probed with XPS etching, SEM mapping, and CP/MAS 29 Si NMR, etc. Pretreatment of rice straw with physical, chemical, and biological methods helps us reveal the plant's active silicon. It was indicated that both organosilicon connected with organic components in rice straw and the inorganic silica deposited in silica cell exists in rice straw can be converted to alkoxysilanes. Furthermore, exogenous silica could be converted to alkoxysilanes directly when mixed with biomass, indicating a new conversion process. We also demonstrate efficient methods for separating and purifying tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and recycling the solvent. An ex-ante life-cycle assessment of the processes has been established. The ex-ante LCA supports the economic viability and predicts minimized waste and clean production of TEOS in the new process.

A New Process to Resource Rice Hull

Abstract:A new process to resource rice hull was proposed for minimizing the wastes and getting the maximum yield of saccharide. It included three steps, i.e., continuous steam explosion step, continuous near-critical water reactions step and combustion step. The influences of temperature and residence time on the yields of water soluble products and the contents of different components in the solid residue were studied. With the optimized conditions, about 80% of the carbon in the rice hull could be converted into aqueous phase products in which the yield of oligomers and monose could be over 40%(wt). From the analyses of different components in the solid residues, hemi-cellulose was decomposed mainly in the steam explosion step while cellulose was decomposed in the near-critical water reactions step.
Influence of Steam Explosion on Rice Straw Fiber Content

Abstract:Steam explosion is a common technique for breaking the polymer structure of lignocellulosic materials. However, its influence on the contents of fiber and soluble sugars has not been reported. This study investigated the influence of steam explosion on the fiber content of rice straw and the transformation rules for fiber content degradation and for the increase in reducing sugar. The effects of the variables steam explosion pressure, pressure retention time, and straw moisture content were examined. The levels of neutral detergent soluble content, acid detergent soluble content, cellulose, acid detergent lignin (ADL), and ash were analyzed for various treatments. The loss of soluble content was determined based on the ash content (ASH). At the pressure of 1.6 MPa, time of 90 s, and 50% moisture content, the degradation rates of hemicellulose, cellulose and ADL of rice straw were 55.2%, 31.0%, and 19.0%, respectively. For the same conditions, the reducing sugar content in the solid-phase substances accounted for 68.9% of the total degradation of hemicellulose and cellulose after steam explosion. The specific surface area of the rice straw after SE was 8.56 m(2)/g, which was 3.8 times the specific surface area of the rural straw after steam explosion. For different steam explosion conditions, the fiber constituents have varying degrees of separation and degradation. Therefore, corresponding optimization plans of steam explosion should be adopted for specific purposes.

Abstract:Hierarchical HZSM-5 with tunable acidity, zeolitic crystallinity, and porosity were prepared using different organosilanes and used for the production of aromatics from the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of rice straw. As the chain length of organosilanes changed, the composition of the products including aromatics and coke varied greatly. Additionally, the introduction of ammonium ions into organosilanes led to a lower yield of aromatics and a higher yield of coke. Transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, N-2 adsorption-desorption (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), and X-ray diffraction were used to explore the influence of the morphological structure, acidity distribution, textural properties, and crystallinity on the CFP of rice straw. The results indicated that the crystallinity, textural properties, and total acidity had a great influence on the synthesis of aromatics.

Abstract:Background: As a renewable carbon source, biomass energy not only helps in resolving the management problems of lignocellulosic wastes, but also helps to alleviate the global climate change by controlling environmental pollution raised by their generation on a large scale. However, the bottleneck problem of extensive production of biofuels lies in the filamentous crystal structure of cellulose and the embedded connection with lignin in biomass that leads to poor accessibility, weak degradation and digestion by microorganisms. Some pretreatment methods have shown significant improvement of methane yield and production rate, but the promotion mechanism has not been thoroughly studied. Revealing the temporal and spatial effects of pretreatment on lignocellulose will greatly help deepen our understanding of the optimization mechanism of pretreatment, and promote efficient utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Here, we propose an approach for qualitative, quantitative, and location analysis of subcellular lignocellulosic changes induced by alkali treatment based on label-free Raman microspectroscopy combined with chemometrics. Results: Firstly, the variations of rice straw induced by alkali treatment were characterized by the Raman spectra, and the Raman fingerprint characteristics for classification of rice straw were captured. Then, a label-free Raman chemical imaging strategy was executed to obtain subcellular distribution of the lignocellulose, in the strategy a serious interference of plant tissues' fluorescence background was effectively removed. Finally, the effects of alkali pretreatment on the subcellular spatial distribution of lignocellulose in different types of cells were discovered. Conclusions: The results demonstrated the mechanism of alkali treatment that promotes methane production in rice straw through anaerobic digestion by means of a systemic study of the evidence from the macroscopic measurement and Raman microscopic quantitative and localization two-angle views. Raman chemical imaging combined with chemometrics could nondestructively realize qualitative, quantitative, and location analysis of the lignocellulose of rice straw at a subcellular level in a label-free way, which was beneficial to optimize pretreatment for the improvement of biomass conversion efficiency and promote extensive utilization of biofuel.
Recovery of Silicon and Potassium from Rice Straw Through Thermal Conversion and Residue Leaching

Abstract:Retaining more soluble silicon (Si) and potassium (K) in the residue after the thermal conversion of straw and returning the residue to farmland as fertilizer can promote the sustainable supply of Si and K in farmland and alleviate the disposal pressure of the residue. In this study, rice straw was thermally converted at 350-850 degrees C under N-2/air/CO2 atmospheres and the residues were leached for seven days to recover Si and K. Factors influencing recovery were analyzed with characterization data and recovery indicators. The results show that phytoliths dissolution affected the co-release of Si and K from residues produced below 650 degrees C or at 750 degrees C under CO2 atmosphere. The Brunner-Emmet-Teller specific surface area of residues had logarithmic positive correlations with Si recovery rate above 750 degrees C and K recovery rate in oxidizing environments. The total amount and content of soluble K in the residue had linear positive correlations with Si recovery rate. Residues with composite silicates or potassium carbonate tended to have lower Si recovery rates. The total K in rice straw was mainly lost by converted from soluble K to kinetically-insoluble K ( 14.5%) and oxidized-gasified K (>19.8%), compared with thermodynamically-insoluble KAlSi3O8 (< 9.4%) and inert-gasified KCl (< 12.7%), respectively. The current straw thermal conversion technology can be improved concerning the above influencing factors to generate residues with more soluble Si and K, and to achieve both energy utilization of straw and resource utilization of residues.
Profiling of Chemical and Structural Composition of Lignocellulosic Biomasses in Tetraploid Rice Straw

Abstract:The improvement of the saccharification of rice straw is one of the strategies to reduce the sophisticated pretreatment that results in high cost and is unfriendly to the environment. We explored the cell wall features in tetraploid rice and highlighted the enhanced saccharification of tetraploid with large biomass. Results showed that lignin content and S/G ratio reduced to 17.09% and 0.37, respectively, in tetraploid straw by the determination of the pyGC-MS method. After the pretreatment, the cellulose crystallinity index decreased from 63.22% to 57.65% in tetraploid straw, which is lower than that of pretreated diploid straw. Surface topological analysis of SEM images indicated that tetraploid straw was more susceptible to the pretreatment. Tetraploid straw showed a strong advantage in the process of enzymatic hydrolysis. The enzyme efficiency reached the highest value of 77.60%, and the rate of enzyme reaction was improved to make the reaction saturated earlier than conventional rice. We concluded that the high saccharification has resulted from the alteration of lignin and cellulose in tetraploid rice. Our research provides an improved green feedstock for bioenergy, and the tetraploid rice straw shows the potential utilization value in bioethanol production.

Abstract:Biogenic silica has been considered as a potential feedstock for producing a variety of silicon-containing products. A new synthesis pathway of tetraethyl orthosilicate from silica that is contained in rice hull ash has been recently proposed. Requiring only one-step processing, it is expected to offer advantages over conventional routes which are derived from silicon metal. This study aims to investigate the optimal synthesis conditions for which this new technology can sustainably replace the conventional method. Experiments employing different reaction conditions are performed to provide the necessary information for a conceptual process design and an economic and environmental viability evaluation. The results obtained by comparison with a selected conventional process show that, under the optimal synthesis conditions, the new process can decrease the production cost and markedly reduce the high greenhouse gas emissions. The competitiveness of the new process is further examined with a sensitivity analysis considering fluctuations in key feedstock and utility prices and alternative sources of electricity supplied to the conventional process. The new synthesis technology shows high potential as a sustainable alternative to the conventional one.

Abstract:Current ethanol production technology has a dire need for efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable sugars. The conversion requires pretreatment of the biomass, one of the most expensive steps, and thus it is quite necessary to identify the most cost-effective and high-efficiency conversion method. In this study, rice straw (RS) biomass was pretreated using 4% NaOH alkali, soaked for 4 h, and autoclaved for 30 min. The structural and morphological changes were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis in both native and alkali-treated RS. The FTIR analysis revealed that native RS contains a considerable amount of lignin that was removed after the pretreatment process. The XRD pattern of the RS revealed an increasing crystallite size of the pretreated lignocellulosic biomass. The study of SEM clearly showed the distorted structure and surface porosity after the pretreatment process. Enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was checked by comparing the commercial enzymes and microbial hydrolysis extracted from a fungal isolate. The best-reducing sugar yield obtained was 0.62 g/L, achieved at optimized conditions from the commercial enzymes. Fermentation efficiency was checked using the yeast isolate Saccharomyces cerevisiae in both the native and pretreated substrate, and the highest ethanol concentration (21.45%) was achieved using 20% w/v biomass loading, enzyme loading (2:1:1), and fermentation for a week at 30°C and pH 4.5. This concentration was higher than that of the untreated RS (3.67%). The ethanol thus produced was further checked for analysis by the 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods.

Abstract:In addition to being a low-cost byproduct of rice cultivation, rice straw also has a high output volume (731 million tons annually) and is, thus, an ideal feedstock for bioethanol production. Somewhere between 34 and 47% cellulose, 19 and 27% hemicellulose, 5 and 24% lignin, and 18% ashes may be found in rice straw. The lignocellulose in rice straw was broken down into sugar using a variety of chemical (acid and alkali) treatments in this investigation. The processing of lignocellulose with alkali or acid was successful in producing a sugar. The sugar yield was greatly improved by combining chemical pretreatment with subsequent enzyme treatment. Finally, Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast was used to ferment the pretreatment samples across the three groups (alkali, acid, and enzymes), and the resulting ethanol concentration was determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed greater degree of porosity in both pretreated samples that has further supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated some constituents had changed in cross-linking reaction between the C–O–H, C–O–C, and other functional groups. After 3 days of fermentation, practically all fermentable sugar (glucose) was transformed to bioethanol (40%) from a sample that had been prepared with 1% acid/enzyme. The synthesis of bioethanol slowed by 45% due to the lengthier fermentation time of up to 6 days. After 6 days of fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, ethanol concentration was maximum when rice straw was subjected to acid pretreatment followed by enzyme treatment. In this experiment, the ethanol output was around 0.40 g/g.

Enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of crop straws via tetrahydrofuran/water co-solvent pretreatment

Abstract:Pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis are critical steps in bio-ethanol production from lignocellulose. The enhancement of enzymatic hydrolysis of several typical crop straws and the particle size adaptability of sorghum straw by tetrahydrofuran/water co-solvent pretreatment were studied. Efficient cellulose conversions (>83.2%) and adequate hemicellulose conversion (>40.7%) were obtained from pretreated rice straw, sorghum straw, wheat straw and corn stover in enzymatic hydrolysis, and the highest glucose yield and xylose yield were 274.0 and 26.3 mg/g dry solid, respectively. Glucose production of 140.4 mg/mL was obtained when the pretreated sorghum straw with mixed particle sizes was employed in enzymatic hydrolysis at 20% solid loading (8 FPU/g cellulose). When the enzyme loading reduced to 4 FPU/g cellulose, 221.7 mg/g dry solid glucose yield and 68.6% enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency could be still obtained with 15% solid loading, exhibiting high potential for bio-ethanol production.

Abstract:The performance of sodium carbonate–sodium sulfite (Na2CO3–Na2SO3) pretreatment on improving the enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw was investigated. The results indicated that both Na2CO3 and Na2SO3 pretreatments are effective in improving the enzymatic digestibility of rice straw. A higher ratio of Na2SO3 in pretreatment liquor performed better at softening the rice straw through degradation of hemicellulose, delignification, and lignin sulfonation, while it was conserving more polysaccharides during the pretreatment than Na2CO3. The highest sugar recovery of pretreated rice straw, 74.5%, 82.7%, and 59.5% for total sugar, glucan, and xylan, respectively, was obtained at cellulase loading of 20FPU/g-cellulose after the pretreatment at 140°C, chemical charge of 12%, Na2CO3–Na2SO3 ratio of 0:1 (i.e., only Na2SO3 pretreatment). The corresponding delignification ratio of pretreated solid was 53.4%, and 91.4% of the polysaccharides were conserved. The sugar recovery of only Na2CO3 pretreatment at the ratio of 1:0 was 67.1%, 74.4%, and 53.7% for total sugar, glucan, and xylan, respectively, at 140°C, chemical charge of 12%, and enzyme loading of 20FPU/g-cellulose. Its corresponding delignification ratio was 40.3%, and polysaccharides conservation ratio was 88.9%.

Abstract:Rice straw (RS) is one of the major lignocellulosic wastes in the world and an abundant feedstock for producing biofuels and chemicals. However, RS is difficult to decompose. In this study, NaOH/urea and electrohydrolysis pretreated RS were used to enhance the structural disruption, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentative hydrogen production. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses demonstrated that both NaOH/urea and electrohydrolysis pretreatments could effectively disrupt the lignin structure and increase the cellulose crystallinity of RS. Following pretreatment, RS was hydrolyzed by cellulase. After 96 h of enzymatic hydrolysis, NaOH/urea- and electrohydrolysis-pretreated RS produced 3.2- and 1.7-fold higher total reducing sugars than the unpretreated RS (232.95 ± 3.60 mg/g), respectively. Finally, the obtained RS hydrolysates were used for fermentative hydrogen production. NaOH/urea- and electrohydrolysis-pretreatment hydrolysates produced 125.0 and 163.0 mL H2/g RS, respectively, which is much higher than the hydrogen yield of unpretreated hydrolysates.

Abstract:Biomass is the ideal substitute for petrochemical resources because of its renewable and abundant sources. p-Toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) can effectively separate lignin from biomass under mild conditions, so it is highly expected in biomass fractionation to improve the utilization efficiency. In this study, we investigated the effect of p-TsOH differentiated fractionation of poplar sawdust, eucalyptus sawdust, and rice straw below 100 °C. According to the experimental results, upon pretreatment by p-TsOH of the three kinds of raw biomass, most of the lignin and hemicellulose of poplar sawdust and eucalyptus sawdust were removed, whereas the cellulose was retained, but most of the hemicellulose and cellulose of rice straw were kept, whereas the lignin was removed at similar conditions. The structures and compositions of pretreatment residues, lignin, and hemicellulose extracted from raw biomass were characterized by XRD, FTIR, HSQC-NMR, XPS, and SEM. The differentiated fractionation mechanism of biomass was analyzed. A better recognition and understanding of the factors affecting biomatrix opening and fractionation will allow for the identification of new pretreatment strategies that improve biomass utilization and permit the rational enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose.

Abstract:Biochars are increasingly recognized as environmentally friendly and cheap remediation agents for soil pollution. The roles of silicon in biochars and interactions between silicon and carbon have been neglected in the literature to date, while the transformation, morphology, and dissolution of silicon in Si-rich biochars remain largely unaddressed. In this study, Si-rich biochars derived from rice straw were prepared under 150-700 degrees C (named RS150-RS700). The transformation and morphology of carbon and silicon in biochar particles were monitored by FTIR, XRD, and SEM-EDX. With increasing pyrolytic temperature, silicon accumulated, and its speciation changed from amorphous to crystalline matter, while the organic matter evolved from aliphatic to aromatic. For rice straw biomass containing amorphous carbon and amorphous silicon, dehydration (<250 degrees C) made silicic acid polymerize, resulting in a closer integration of carbon and silicon. At medium pyrolysis temperatures (250-350 degrees C), an intense cracking of carbon components occurred, and, thus, the silicon located in the inside tissue was exposed. At high pyrolysis temperatures (500-700 degrees C), the biochar became condensed due to the aromatization of carbon and crystallization of silicon. Correspondingly, the carbon release in water significantly decreased, while the silicon release somewhat decreased and then sharply increased with pyrolytic temperature. Along with SEM-EDX images of biochars before and after water washing, we proposed a structural relationship between carbon and silicon in biochars to explain the mutual protection between carbon and silicon under different pyrolysis temperatures, which contribute to the broader understanding of biochar chemistry and structure. The silicon dissolution kinetics suggests that high Si biochars could serve as a novel slow release source of biologically available Si in low Si agricultural soils.

We investigated the effects of ammonification and steam explosion pre-treatments under multi-strain inoculation conditions on the protein content of rice straw after solid-state fermentation. We compared rice straw samples after ammonification (TA), steam explosion (TSE), and ammonification and steam explosion (TA-SE) to an untreated control group (TC). Combined ammonification and steam explosion degraded the rice straw lignocellulosic structure, releasing nutrients that benefit microbial reproduction. Additionally, newly formed amino compounds and depolymerization products effectively increased true protein content. Post-fermentation, total crude protein contents of TA, TSE, and TA-SE samples were 2.56, 1.83, and 4.36 times that of Tc samples, respectively, and true protein contents were 2.52, 2.39, and 5.03 times higher. The true protein content of TA-SE samples was 46.7% of the dry matter, rendering it a suitable alternative to high-protein animal feed.
Enzymatic hydrolysis of alkali-pretreated rice straw by Trichoderma reesei ZM4-F3

Abstract:To minimize the cost of cellulase production, both pretreatment of the rice straw and on-site enzyme production were realized. Rice straw was first pretreated by 2% NaOH, which could increase cellulose by 54.83%, and decreased hemicellulose by 61.07% and lignin by 36.24%, respectively. Detected by SEM, significant morphological changes were observed in the tissue. Through orthogonal experiments, temperature 35°C, initial pH value 4.5 and the rotation speed of shaking bed 180rpm were determined to be the optimal conditions for hydrolysis of rice straw by Trichoderma reesei ZM4-F3. After hydrolysis for 96h, the production of FPA and reducing sugars could achieve 2.231gl−1 and 12.92Uml−1, respectively. Moreover, T. reesei ZM4-F3 can decompose 68.21% of pretreated rice straw after 120h of hydrolysis. By GC analysis, it showed that glucose is the main component of the enzymatic hydrolysates, which made GC seem to be more effective than the DNS method for analysis of the enzymatic hydrolysates as it can detect the concentration of each kind of monosaccharide more accurately.

Abstract:A direct synthesis pathway of tetraethyl orthosilicate from silica and ethanol was recently proposed. Although this pathway has many advantages over the conventional one producing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) from metallurgical silicon, its potential can be further increased by the effective removal of its byproducts. This study investigates the removal of the water byproduct, which reduces the TEOS product yield and enhances the loss of raw materials. Several inorganic dehydrating agents were examined under different conditions, on the basis of which a suitable TEOS synthesis process using the selected dehydrating agent was designed and its optimal conditions were determined. The feasibility of the designed process was evaluated in comparison with our previously reported process using a molecular sieve as a water adsorbent and the conventional process. The evaluation results confirmed that the CaO process is more economically competitive and environmentally friendlier, reducing 24% production cost and 40% greenhouse gas emissions of the conventional process.
