Abstract:ZnCrO 3 perovskites structural stability, optoelectronic, mechanical, along with thermoelectric properties, have all been to be described by calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). To determine the exchange correlation potential, the well-known generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and integration of the mBJ potential were used. The perovskite shows that this is in a cubic structure with Fm3m symmetry. Additionally, to check the stability, cohesive energy, structural optimization, and mechanical stability were requirements. This perovskite was found to be brittle, and their mechanical stability enhanced by the elastic constants. The perovskite has a half-metallic character, as evidenced by the spin-polarized electronic band profile, the behavior of the dielectric constant, and absorption coefficient in the spin-up and down channels. In this article, we also looked at magnetism and the origin of the half-metallic gap. The unpaired electrons in the split d-orbitals of the M-sited elements in the crystal field are responsible for the half-metallic as well as magnetic characteristics. Excellent spin polarization at the Fermi level encourages perovskite's possible use in spintronic technologies. Lastly, we computed the thermoelectric parameters within a chemical potential at various temperatures (300 K, 600, 900 K) to explore the potential application in spin electronic devices. Our finding shows that the ZnCrO 3 alloy is exceptionally promising for the next generation of spintronics and thermoelectric devices at room and high temperatures.

Abstract:Materials with 100% spin polarisation, high-speed conduction electrons, high Curie temperatures, and ferromagnetic ground state are known for spintronics. Double perovskites (DPs) with these features are becoming popular nowadays. Herein, introducing another halide-based DP, we determined that Cs2KMnCl6 is a robust intrinsic 3d ferromagnetic half-metal with a 4 μB magnetic moment per unit cell. It exhibits the metallic band for the spin-up configuration, enabling their smooth transport, together with a massive gap of ∼4.51 eV for the spin-down states, thus protecting it from spin–flip transitions. The calculated structural and elastic stability criteria substantiate the stability of the cubic Cs2KMnCl6 double perovskite with a F m 3 ̄ m symmetry. The 3d states of Mn mainly contribute to the robust ferromagnetism above room temperature and show Tc ∼ 534 K. The different Fermi surface topologies within the Brillouin zone establish its conducting nature for up-spin channels and favor the spin-polarized transport. Moreover, the spin-polarized dielectric constant and absorption coefficient also evidenced the half-metallic characteristics. Therefore, our findings offer a novel DP system for investigating spintronic application.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the structural, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties of the Na-based half-Heusler alloys XYZ composed of X=Na ( atom); Y=K, Rb, Cs ( atoms) and a main body sp atom Z=C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb by using the DFT based full-potential WIEN2k package. We compare the total energy vs volume of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and non-magnetic half-Heusler structures to obtain the stable magnetic structure. Calculations show that compounds are stable in the half-Heusler -phase and the ferromagnetic state. From 15 alloys under study, 13 of them showed half-metallic behavior in the minimum-energy half-Heusler phase at the optimized lattice constant. We show that all compounds have the same total magnetic moment equal to . The band structure and the density of states of half-Heusler alloys are obtained. The elastic constants , and of the single crystal and the related elastic moduli G, B, E, of the polycrystalline aggregates are also calculated and used to study the mechanical stability of these alloys. Furthermore, the average, transverse, longitudinal sound velocities and the Debye temperature for these compounds are calculated. Finally, the Curie temperatures of the half-Heusler alloys are estimated by using the mean field approximation. The estimated Curie temperatures shows that these compounds preserve the ferromagnetic state and magnetic polarization at temperatures much higher than the room temperature and may be suitable for spintronic applications.

Nanoscale Magnetism and Novel Electronic Properties of a Bilayer Bismuth(111) Film with Vacancies and Chemical Doping.

Abstract:Magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs) exhibit several exotic phenomena including the magnetoelectric effect and quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, from an experimental perspective, incorporation of spin moment into 3D TIs is still challenging. Thus, instead of 3D TIs, the 2D form of TIs may open up new opportunities to induce magnetism. Based on first principles calculations, we demonstrate a novel strategy to realize robust magnetism and exotic electronic properties in a 2D TI [bilayer Bi(111) film: abbreviated as Bi(111)]. We examine the magnetic and electronic properties of Bi(111) with defects such as bismuth monovacancies (MVs) and divacancies (DVs), and these defects decorated with 3d transition metals (TMs). It has been observed that the MV in Bi(111) can induce novel half metallicity with a net magnetic moment of 1 μB. The origin of half metallicity and magnetism in MV/Bi(111) is further explained by the passivation of the σ-dangling bonds near the defect site. Furthermore, in spite of the nonmagnetic nature of DVs, the TMs (V, Cr, Mn, and Fe) trapped at the 5/8/5 defect structure of DVs can not only yield a much higher spin moment than those trapped at the MVs but also display intriguing electronic properties such as metallic, semiconducting and spin gapless semiconducting properties. The predicted magnetic and electronic properties of TM/DV/Bi(111) systems are explained through density of states, spin density distribution and Bader charge analysis.
Existence of inter coupled structural, electronic and magnetic states in Sm$ _{2} $NiMnO$ _{6} $ double perovskite

Abstract:Coupling between different interactions allows to control physical aspects in multifunctional materials by perturbing any of the degrees of freedom. Here, we aim to probe the correlation among structural, electronic and magnetic observables of Sm$ _{2} $NiMnO$ _{6} $ ferromagnetic insulator double perovskite. Our employed methodology includes thermal evolution of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, near edge and extended edge hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy and bulk magnetometry. The magnetic ordering in SNMO adopts two transitions, at T$ _{C} $=159.6K due to ferromagnetic arrangement of Ni-Mn sublattice and at T$ _{d} $=34.1K because of anti-parallel alignment of polarized Sm paramagnetic moments with respect to Ni-Mn network. The global as well as local crystal structure of SNMO undergoes isostructural transitions across T$ _{C} $ and T$ _{d} $, observed by means of temperature dependent variation in Ni/Mn-O, Ni-Mn bonding characters and super exchange angle in Ni-O-Mn linkage. Hybridization between Ni, Mn 3\textit{d}, O 2\textit{p} electronic states is also modified in the vicinity of magnetic transition. On the other hand, the signature of Ni/Mn anti-site disorders are evidenced from local structure and magnetization analysis. The change in crystal environments governs the magnetic response by imposing alteration in metal - ligand orbital overlap. Utilizing these complimentary probes we have found that structural, electronic and magnetic states are inter-coupled in SNMO which makes it a potential platform for technological usage.

Abstract:The density functional theory as a computational approach was used to explore the ferrimagnetic semiconducting behavior of Dy2CoMnO6 double perovskite compound in both spin-up and spin-down directions. Thermodynamic stability was confirmed in a wide pressure range set to 30 GPa. Both scalar and full relativistic calculations are used to estimate the spin-orbit effect. The topological distribution of the charge density and the net effective charge of each atom are studied based on the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) as implemented in Bader code, Besides this, the different QTAIM atomic basins descriptors such as electron density ρ_b, Laplacian of the electron density ∇^2 ρ_b, potential electronic energy density V_b, kinetic electronic energy density G_b and density of the total electronic energy H_b at bond critical points (BCPs) are estimated using CRITIC2 software where the ionic type for Dy-O, Co-O, and Mn-O bonds are evaluated. Holes and electrons have different effective masses, their thermoelectric properties appear high figure of merit (ZT) exceeding 0.5 for temperatures greater than 500 K in the negative chemical potential region, suggesting that doping with holes might be more favorable for thermoelectric efficiency than doping with electrons.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically explored the properties of novel perovskite materials, XAlN 3 (X = K, Rb, and Cs), based on first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. Generalized gradient approximation and HSE06 hybrid functional methods were used to investigate the electronic band structures. Our findings indicated intriguing half-metallic behavior where the spin-down state had metallic characteristics, whereas the spin-up state behaved as an insulator for all compounds, with indirect band gaps. These compounds had a significant magnetic moment of 5 μ B , which confirmed their half-metallic nature. Analysis of the elastic constants indicated distinctive mechanical properties. Moreover, the dielectric functions indicated efficient energy absorption across a broad energy spectrum, which is particularly beneficial for ultraviolet optoelectronic applications. At 300 K with a chemical potential (μ) of +1.37 eV, CsAlN 3 had a notable thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of 0.99. This ZT value remained competitive at 0.97, even at a high temperature of 1000 K in the p-type region. However, the ZT and Seebeck coefficients decreased in a temperature-dependent manner to affect the thermoelectric characteristics of these materials. Overall, our findings suggest that XAlN 3 (X = K, Rb, and Cs) perovskite materials are promising candidates for use in various applications in spintronics, optoelectronics, and thermoelectric devices.

Abstract:A computational framework based on density functional theory (DFT) has been effectively employed to investigate the wide-ranging physical characteristics of ferromagnetic manganese (Mn)-substituted double perovskites (DPs) with composition Cs 2 AgIn 1− x Mn x Cl/Br 6 ( x = 0.0, 0.25). This research covers a systematic exploration of the mentioned DPs for potential applications in the domains of spintronics and energy conversion devices. The physics concerning ferromagnetic (FM) Cs 2 AgIn 0.75 Mn 0.25 Cl/Br 6 DPs was studied computationally using the modified Becke–Johnson (mBJ-LDA) potential and the generalized gradient approximation (PBEsol GGA) method introduced by Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof. The structural, electronic, magnetic, and transport behavior of materials were investigated using these computations. Structural parameters for both perovskite materials were computed subsequent to their optimization in FM phase. According to evaluations of the electronic band structure and density of states (DOS), the incorporation of Mn ions into the host lattice causes exchange splitting induced by p–d hybridization, consequently stabilizing the FM state. Probing the sharing of magnetic moment, charge, and spin between the substituent cations and the host anions led to the comprehensive elaboration of this exchange splitting of bands. Important parameters such as exchange constants ( N 0 α , N 0 β ), and direct spin-exchange splitting Δ x (d), support the stability of the FM state. Finally, we briefly explored the spin effect on other aspects of electronic transport, the Seebeck coefficient, and the power factor, using the conventional Boltzmann transport theory.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials with prominent properties such as electrical, ferroelectric, magnetic, optical, and magnetooptical are of keen interest to several practical implications. In the roadmap of designing such materials, in the present work, using density functional theory based first-principles calculations, we have investigated the properties of transition metals (TM)-substituted Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT). Our calculations predict the emergence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in (TM)-substituted NBT. Nonzero magnetic moments of 1.5 and 1.9 μB/f.u. , respectively, are obtained for 25% Ni and Fe. Our data on optical properties for pure NBT are in excellent agreement with the available theory and experiments. For Ni/Fe-NBT, we observed a diverging nature of static dielectric constant, which could be attributed to the induced metallic character in the system. Our simulations on MOKE predict significant Kerr signals in both Ni and Fe-substituted NBT, which suggests transition metal substituted NBT as potential candidate for magnetooptic applications. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.024410 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Spintronics is the fast growing field that will play a key role in optimizing power consumption, memory, and processing capabilities of nanoelectronic devices. Heusler alloys are potential candidates for application in spintronics due to their room temperature (RT) half-metallicity, high Curie temperature, low lattice mismatch with most substrates, and strong control on electronic density of states at Fermi level. In this work, we investigate the effect of {substitutional doping and disorder} on the half-metallicity, phase stability, and magnetism of Heusler alloys using density functional theory methods. Our study shows that electronic and magnetic properties of half/full-Heusler alloys can be tuned by changing electron-count through controlled variation of chemical compositions of alloying elements. We provide a detailed discussion on the effect of substitutional doping and disorder on the tunability of half-metallic nature of Co$_{2}$MnX and NiMnX based Heusler alloys, where X represents group 13\textendash 16 and period 3\textendash 6 elements of the periodic table. {Based on the idea of electron count and disorder, we predicted a possible existence of thermodynamically stable half-metallic multicomponent bismuthides, for example, (CuNi$_{3}$)Mn$_{4}$Bi$_{4}$ and (ZnNi$_{7}$)Mn$_{8}$Bi$_{8}$, through substitution doping at Ni site by specific Cu and Zn composition in half-Heusler NiMnBi.} We believe that the design guide {based on electron-counts} presented for half-metals will play a key role in electronic-structure engineering of novel Heusler alloys for spintronic application, which will accelerate the development and synthesis of novel materials.

Abstract:Li-based half-Heusler alloys have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in optoelectronics and because they carry the possibility of exhibiting large magnetic moments for spintronic applications. Due to their similarities to metastable zinc blende half-metals, the half-Heusler alloys $\beta$-LiMnZ (Z = N, P and Si) were systematically examined for their electric, magnetic and stability properties at optimized lattice constants and strained lattice constants that exhibit half-metallic properties. Other phases of the half-Heusler structure ($\alpha$ and $\gamma$) are also reported here, but they are unlikely to be grown. The magnetic moments of these stable Li-based alloys are expected to reach as high as 4 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ per unit cell when Z = Si and 5 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ per unit cell when Z = N and P, however the antiferromagnetic spin configuration is energetically favored when Z is a pnictogen. $\beta$-LiMnSi at a lattice constant 14\% larger than its equilibrium lattice constant is a promising half-metal for spintronic applications due to its large magnetic moment and vibrational stability. The modified Slater--Pauling rule for these alloys is determined. Finally, a plausible method for developing half-metallic Li$_x$MnZ at equilibrium, by tuning $x$, is investigated, but, unlike tetragonalization, this type of alloying introduces local structural changes that destroy the half-metallicity.

Abstract:In this study, we present a theoretical investigation of the structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic, magnetic and thermoelectric properties of orthorhombic rare earth perovskites RMnO 3 (R=Pr- Nd). We used density functional theory (DFT) and the full-potential linearized augmented-plane wave method (FP-LAPW) as implemented in the WIEN2K package. We found that our proposed compounds are mechanically stable and elastically anisotropic materials. By examining the thermal characteristics of these compounds, we discovered that they exhibit low thermal conductivity, this feature has practical applications in thermal barrier coatings (TBC). Therefore, within both GGA and GGA + U approximations, we found that these materials are half-metal ferromagnetic (HMF) and maintaining their half-metallicity under stress, this suggests that orthorhombic rare earth perovskites RMnO 3 might be appropriate for spintronic devices. Finally, we explored the thermoelectric properties as a function of temperatures using Boltzmann transport theory as implemented in the BoltzTrap code.

Abstract:SPIN, Ahead of Print. A novel half-metallic family of materials, the multiple Dirac cones half-metals, has received considerable interest from researchers. Benefiting from its novel electronic structure, they are promising candidates for ultra-performance spintronic devices. In this paper, we propose a new half-metallic material, perovskite-type [math] HoMnO3, which possesses similar Dirac-like multiple linear band crosses. We investigated its electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties in detail on the basis of density functional theory. The excellent band structures are robust enough against spin-orbit coupling and electron and hole doping. Through calculations, we confirmed its multi-aspect stability. Based on the current study, we confirm that HoMnO3 has potential for next-generation spintronic applications.

Exploring Multiferroicity, Half-Metallic Phase, and Curie Temperature in X = B/C/N/F-Doped KNbO3: A DFT Aspect

Abstract:Multiferroic materials provide an astonishing platform for next-generation spintronic devices such as magnetoresistive random access memory. Herein, ferroelectric, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pristine and X = B/C/N/F-doped KNbO3 (KNO) perovskite oxides are explored using ab-initio calculations along with modified Becke-Johnson potential, where X is doped at O-site (X@O) in both KO- and NbO2 -layers. Our calculations revealed that the pristine motif is a non-magnetic insulator having an energy band gap (Eg ) of 2.80 eV and spontaneous polarization (P) of 41 μCcm^−2, which are close to the experimentally observed values of 3.34 eV and 37 μCcm^−2, respectively. The computed enthalpy of formation and elastic parameters confirm the thermodynamic and mechanical strength of the doped configurations, respectively. It is established that X-dopants significantly reduce structural distortions and have negative influence on the value of P. The most distinctive feature of the current work is that the B/N-doped KNO system for X@O in the KO-layer exhibits n-type half-metallic (HM) ferromagnetic (FM) behavior with an Eg of 1.46/2.96 eV which is sufficiently large enough to prevent any magnetic transition. In contrast, C and F-doped structures are FM insulator and n-type non-magnetic metallic, respectively. Along with this, X = B/C/N-doped KNO system for X@O in the NbO2 -layer displayed FM insulating nature, while the F-doped motif becomes an n-type non-magnetic metallic. The total magnetic moment for the B/N-doped structure is 1.0, which also hints the HM FM behavior. Finally, the estimated Curie temperature using the Heisenberg 2D Hamiltonian model in magnetic doped structures is found to be high enough to be used for practical purposes.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a detailed investigation of the crystal structure, magnetic, magnetocaloric, magneto-transport, and electrical polarization properties of new multiferroic material in the polycrystalline and nanocrystalline form of the Dy2MnCoO6 double perovskite. Both compounds crystallized in the monoclinic structure with P21/n space group. The magnetic properties of both systems are mainly dominant ferromagnetic (FM) and weak antiferromagnetic (AFM). The FM/AFM coupling is related to the competing and combining functions of the radius and the magnetic moments of rare earth ions (i.e., 3d-4f exchange interactions). The reduction of the saturation magnetization in the isothermal magnetization curves can be explained by the existence of anti-phase boundaries and local anti-site defects in the system. Moreover, these materials hold reasonable values of magnetocaloric parameters and the absence of hysteresis makes the system a potential candidate for magnetic refrigeration. These compounds revealed two magnetic phase transitions, according to the appearance of two peaks in the temperature dependence of magnetic entropy change curves. The temperature dependent resistivity data for both the systems display semiconductor nature near room temperature and insulating like behavior at low temperature regimes. The variable-range hopping conduction mechanism is used to best understand their transport mechanism. In addition, the electrical polarization loop at low temperature confirms the presence of ferroelectricity for both the studied systems. The decrease of polarization under an external magnetic field evidences the weak magnetoelectric coupling. The coexistence of ferromagnetic ordering with insulating behaviour and ferroelectricity at low temperature promises new opportunities and improvements in next generation applications for information storage, spintronic, and sensors.

Spintronic devices can operate at far higher speeds with less power consumption which has the potential to eventually replace traditional electronics. In this manuscript, we theoretically investigated the physical properties of europium based double perovskites Eu 2 XWO 6 (X=Mg, Zn) using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane wave (FP-LAPW) technique. The volume optimization was done for both compounds, which demonstrate complete structural stability, while their thermodynamic stability is confirmed through the calculated formation energies. The mechanical properties reveal that both studied compounds fulfill the Born's stability criteria. The electronic properties of Eu 2 MgWO 6 and Eu 2 ZnWO 6 reveal that in spin up channel both materials exhibit metallic character, while in spin down channel, indirect bandgaps of 4.11 and 3.97 eV are noticed for Eu 2 MgWO 6 and Eu 2 ZnWO 6 , respectively, showing half-metallic behavior. The examination of the magnetic properties shows a significant magnetic moment of 14 for Eu 2 XWO 6 (X=Mg, Zn). High optical conductivity and absorption are noticed in the UV region as shown by the optical traits of Eu 2 XWO 6 (X=Mg, Zn). Both materials show high magnetic moments, which leads to high spin polarization and are considered highly effective for the functioning of spintronic devices. Abstract:The search for room-temperature magnetocaloric materials for refrigeration has led to investigations of double perovskites. In particular, a puzzle has appeared in the La$_2$MnNiO$_6$, La$_2$MnCoO$_6$ and La$_2$MnFeO$_6$ family of compounds. They share the same crystal structure, but while La$_2$MnNiO$_6$ and La$_2$MnCoO$_6$ are ferromagnets below room temperature, La$_2$MnFeO$_6$, contrary to simple expectations, is a ferrimagnet. To solve this puzzle, we use density-functional theory calculations to investigate the electronic structure and magnetic exchange interactions of the ordered double perovskites. Our study reveals the critical role played by local electron-electron interaction in the Fe-$d$ orbital to promote the Fe$^{3+}$ valence state with half-filled $d$-shell over Fe$^{2+}$ and to establish a ferrimagnetic ground state for La$_2$MnFeO$_6$. The importance of Hund's coupling and Jahn-Teller distortion on the Mn$^{4+}$ ion is also pointed out. Exchange constants are extracted by comparing different magnetically ordered states. Mean-field and classical Monte-Carlo calculations on the resulting model give trends in $T_C$ that are in agreement with experiments on this family of materials.

Abstract:MXenes are rapidly emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials with thickness, composition, and functionalization-dependent outstanding properties having applications in diverse fields. To disclose nano-spintronic applications of 2D-double transition metal (DTM) carbide and nitride-based pristine and surface-functionalized MXenes (M'2M"X2Tx, M' and M" = Cr, Mo, W; X = C/N; T = -F/-OH/=O), a systematic investigation has been performed on structural stability, magnetic properties and electronic structure using spin-polarized first-principles calculations. 36 stables functionalized MXenes were screened from 144 explored DTM based MXenes. The explored materials exhibit striking properties, having wide range of magnetic ground states, from non-magnetic to ferromagnetic, and then to antiferromagnetic, accompanied by metallic to half-metallic or gapless half-metallic properties, depending on transition metal(s) and terminating group. Mo and W-based MXenes are found to be nonmagnetic and metallic, whereas Cr-Mo and Cr-W-based MXenes are magnetic with varying metallic behavior. W2CrN2O2 and Mo2CrN2O2 systems are found to be ferromagnetic half-metallic 2D materials with a direct band gap of 1.35 eV and 0.77 eV respectively, in the minority spin channel. The comprehensive study on DTM MXenes, provide intrinsic half-metallic properties along with robust ferromagnetism, opens up a class of promising new 2D materials with tunable magnetic and electronic properties for potential device applications in nano-spintronics and electronics.

Abstract:Electron- and hole-doped La$_2$CoMnO$_6$(LCMO) are investigated using first principles DFT calculations. Hole and electron doping are achieved respectively by introducing Sr$^{2+}$ at La$^{3+}$ sites and by inducing O-site vacancies in LCMO. Electronic structure calculations suggest that hole doping alters the charge and valence state of Co ions, whereas electron doping influences the Mn ions. Introduction of defects is found to enhance antisite disorder(ASD) at Co/Mn site, which is expected to influence the magnetodielectric properties of the system. Our calculations suggest that while ASD and/or hole doping induces half-metallicity in LCMO, electron doping restores its insulating state. Mean-field calculations performed using exchange constants obtained by mapping DFT total energies of different collinear spin configurations onto the Ising Hamiltonian find that defects tend to reduce the Curie temperature ($T_C$). Interestingly, the calculated linear optical properties of the system suggest that the material becomes optically active with high values of birefringence in the presence of defects, a property that is highly sought-after in the optical communications and laser industry.

Abstract:Abstract We investigated the structural stability as well as the mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of the Full-Heusler alloy CoNiMnSi using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Two generalized gradient approximations (GGA and GGA + U) were used to treat the exchange-correlation energy functional. The ground state properties of CoNiMnSi including the lattice parameter and bulk modulus were calculated. The elastic constants (C ij ) and their related elastic moduli as well as the thermodynamic properties for CoNiMnSi have been calculated for the first time. The existence of half-metallic ferromagnetism (HM-FM) in this material is apparent from its band structure. Our results classify CoNiMnSi as a new HM-FM material with high spin polarization suitable for spintronic applications.
