Abstract:Importance: Few population-based studies in the US collected individual-level data from families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To examine differences in COVID-19 pandemic-related experiences in a large sociodemographically diverse sample of children and caregivers. Design, setting, and participants: The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) multi-cohort consortium is an ongoing study that brings together 64 individual cohorts with participants (24 757 children and 31 700 caregivers in this study) in all 50 US states and Puerto Rico. Participants who completed the ECHO COVID-19 survey between April 2020 and March 2022 were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Data were analyzed from July 2021 to September 2022. Main outcomes and measures: Exposures of interest were caregiver education level, child life stage (infant, preschool, middle childhood, and adolescent), and urban or rural (population <50 000) residence. Dependent variables included COVID-19 infection status and testing; disruptions to school, child care, and health care; financial hardships; and remote work. Outcomes were examined separately in logistic regression models mutually adjusted for exposures of interest and race, ethnicity, US Census division, sex, and survey administration date. Results: Analyses included 14 646 children (mean [SD] age, 7.1 [4.4] years; 7120 [49%] female) and 13 644 caregivers (mean [SD] age, 37.6 [7.2] years; 13 381 [98%] female). Caregivers were racially (3% Asian; 16% Black; 12% multiple race; 63% White) and ethnically (19% Hispanic) diverse and comparable with the US population. Less than high school education (vs master's degree or more) was associated with more challenges accessing COVID-19 tests (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.88; 95% CI, 1.06-1.58), lower odds of working remotely (aOR, 0.04; 95% CI, 0.03-0.07), and more food access concerns (aOR, 4.14; 95% CI, 3.20-5.36). Compared with other age groups, young children (age 1 to 5 years) were least likely to receive support from schools during school closures, and their caregivers were most likely to have challenges arranging childcare and concerns about work impacts. Rural caregivers were less likely to rank health concerns (aOR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.69-0.86) and social distancing (aOR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.73-0.91) as top stressors compared with urban caregivers. Conclusions: Findings in this cohort study of US families highlighted pandemic-related burdens faced by families with lower socioeconomic status and young children. Populations more vulnerable to public health crises should be prioritized in recovery efforts and future planning.

Abstract:Importance: Robust longitudinal studies of within-child changes in mental health associated with the COVID-19 pandemic are lacking, as are studies examining sources of heterogeneity in such changes. Objective: To investigate within-child changes, overall and between subgroups, in youth mental health from prepandemic to midpandemic. Design, setting, and participants: This cohort study used longitudinal prepandemic and midpandemic data from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, collected between January 1, 2015, and March 12, 2020 (prepandemic), and between March 13, 2020, and August 31, 2022 (midpandemic). Data were analyzed between December 1, 2022, and June 1, 2024. The sample included 9 US-based observational longitudinal pediatric ECHO cohorts. Cohorts were included if they collected the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) School Age version before and during the pandemic on more than 20 participants of normal birth weight aged 6 to 17 years. Exposure: The COVID-19 pandemic. Main outcomes and measures: Prepandemic to midpandemic changes in CBCL internalizing, externalizing, depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) scores were estimated, and differences in outcome trajectories by child sociodemographic characteristics (age, sex, race, ethnicity, and poverty level) and prepandemic mental health problems were examined using established CBCL clinical score thresholds. Results: A total of 1229 participants (mean [SD] age during the pandemic, 10.68 [2.29] years; 625 girls [50.9%]) were included. The sample was socioeconomically diverse (197 of 1056 children [18.7%] lived at ≤130% of the Federal Poverty Level; 635 (51.7%) identified as White, 388 (31.6%) as Black, 147 (12.0%) as multiracial, 40 (3.3%) as another race, and 118 (9.6%) as Hispanic). Generalized linear mixed-effects models revealed minor decreases in externalizing problems (β = -0.88; 95% CI, -1.16 to -0.60), anxiety (β = -0.18; 95% CI, -0.31 to -0.05), and ADHD (β = -0.36; 95% CI, -0.50 to -0.22), but a minor increase in depression (β = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.10 to 0.35). Youth with borderline or clinically meaningful prepandemic scores experienced decreases across all outcomes, particularly externalizing problems (borderline, β = -2.85; 95% CI, -3.92 to -1.78; clinical, β = -4.88; 95% CI, -5.84 to -3.92). Low-income (β = -0.76; 95% CI, -1.14 to -0.37) and Black (β = -0.52; 95% CI, -0.83 to -0.20) youth experienced small decreases in ADHD compared with higher income and White youth, respectively. Conclusions and relevance: In this longitudinal cohort study of economically and racially diverse US youth, there was evidence of differential susceptibility and resilience for mental health problems during the pandemic that was associated with prepandemic mental health and sociodemographic characteristics.

Abstract:Parenting stress reflects a discrepancy between a parent's perception of their resources, the demands of their child's needs, and the caregiving relationship and contexts (Abidin, 1992). Parenting stress can increase the risk of issues in the parent–child relationship, as well as child behavioral and emotional outcomes (Neece et al., 2012; Spinelli et al., 2021). Chronic stressors, such as living through the COVID-19 pandemic, have the potential to increase the demands of parenting and thus parenting stress. Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined parenting stress trajectories of 298 American parents with young children ( M age = 15.02 months, range = 1–34 months) over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also examined the effects of parental mental health on parenting stress, and the effects of parental mental health and parenting stress on child problem behaviors using data gathered through the Prolific survey platform. Parental mental health, measured by depressive symptoms Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale−10, anxiety symptoms Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and overall stress levels 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, was related to higher initial parenting stress index–short form. Changes in parenting stress over time were linked with higher levels of children's problem behaviors (CBCL). Child temperament was also related to initial parenting stress. Lower levels of household income were linked with higher levels of parental mental health symptoms and higher rates of parenting stress increases over time. These results highlight the importance of considering the well-being of all family members in child outcomes, and the ways in which different experiences and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic affect parental and child well-being. Abstract:BackgroundStress and compromised parenting often place children at risk of abuse and neglect. Child maltreatment has generally been viewed as a highly individualistic problem by focusing on stressors and parenting behaviors that impact individual families. However, because of the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), families across the world are experiencing a new range of stressors that threaten their health, safety, and economic well-being.ObjectiveThis study examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to parental perceived stress and child abuse potential.Participants and SettingParticipants included parents (N = 183) with a child under the age of 18 years in the western United States.MethodTests of group differences and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the relationships among demographic characteristics, COVID-19 related stressors, mental health risk, protective factors, parental perceived stress, and child abuse potential.ResultsGreater COVID-19 related stressors and high anxiety and depressive symptoms are associated with higher parental perceived stress and child abuse potential. Conversely, greater parental support and perceived control during the pandemic may have a protective effect against perceived stress and child abuse potential. Results also indicate racial and ethnic differences in COVID-19 related stressors, but not in mental health risk, protective factors, perceived stress, or child abuse potential.ConclusionFindings suggest that although families experience elevated stressors from COVID-19, providing parental support and increasing perceived control may be promising intervention targets.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Background: The pandemic has disrupted all aspects of children’s lives and has increased children’s exposure to adversity and traumas known to increase the risk of mental health challenges. Recent studies have reported increased rates of mental health challenges in youth during the pandemic, yet few studies have examined the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary school-age children. The pandemic has also adversely impacted caregiver mental health and other indirect factors, including economic instability, known to increase children’s risk for impairing mental health challenges. OBJECTIVE Objective: This study aimed to characterize the social-emotional challenges of children ages 2 to 12 years old during the pandemic and identify modifiable child, caregiver, and family-related risk factors that contribute to risk and are additional targets for intervention. METHODS Methods: Caregivers (N = 676) of children ages 2-12 completed an online survey in early fall 2021 using standardized screening tools to assess child social-emotional challenges and caregiver anxiety and depression. We used a new 16 scale to assess the impact of the pandemic at the child, caregiver, and family levels. We used hierarchical linear regression and logistic regression to explore the relationship between children’s mental health and caregivers’ mental health. We used path analysis to explore direct and indirect effects of the impact of pandemic stress on child emotional and peer challenges, mediated by caregiver anxiety and depression. RESULTS Results: Eighty-seven percent of the children were ages 2-8 years old (n=588) with 13% (n=88) between 9-12 years old. Caregivers endorsed significant child emotional and peer challenges with 80% (n = 536) of children at risk for clinically-significant emotional challenges and 57% (n = 388) at risk for clinically-significant peer social challenges. Emotional challenges increased with age (r = .20, P <.001). 50% (n=330) of caregivers screened positive for generalized anxiety and 24% (n=160) screened positive for depression. Cumulative COVID-19 impact was directly associated with increased child emotional challenges (r=.29, P<.001), peer challenges (r=.29, P<.001), caregiver anxiety (r = .32, P<.001), and caregiver depression (r = .42, P<.001). Caregiver anxiety accounted for 31% of the total effect of COVID-19 impact on child emotional challenges and 18% of the total effect on peer challenges. CONCLUSIONS Conclusions: The results of our study show that the COVID-19 pandemic is having direct and indirect adverse impacts on the social-emotional health of children ages 2 to 12 years old with impacts on very young children similar to impacts for older children. Only with an integrated, family-focused approach that includes young children will we be able to mitigate the current pediatric mental health crisis. CLINICALTRIAL n/a

Abstract:Objective: COVID-19 has presented threats to adolescents' psychosocial well-being, especially for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This longitudinal study aimed to identify which social (i.e., family conflict, parental social support, peer social support), emotional (i.e., COVID-19 health-related stress), and physical (i.e., sleep quality, food security) factors influence adolescents' same- and next-day affect and misconduct and whether these factors functioned differently by adolescents' economic status. Method: Daily-diary approaches were used to collect 12,033 assessments over 29 days from a nationwide sample of American adolescents (n =546; Mage = 15.0; 40% male; 43% Black, 37% White, 10% Latinx, 8% Asian American, and 3% Native American; 61% low-income) at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Peer support, parent support, and sleep quality operated as promotive factors, whereas parent-child conflict and COVID-19 health-related stress operated as risk factors. Although these links were consistent for adolescents irrespective of economic status, low-income adolescents experienced more conflict with parents, more COVID-19 health-related stress, less peer support, and lower sleep quality than higher-income adolescents. Food insecurity was connected to decreased same- and next-day negative affect for low-income adolescents only. Low-income adolescents also displayed greater negative affect in response to increased daily health-related stress relative to higher-income adolescents. Conclusion: These results highlight the role of proximal processes in shaping adolescent adjustment and delineate key factors influencing youth psychosocial well-being in the context of COVID-19. By understanding adolescents' responses to stressors at the onset of the pandemic, practitioners and healthcare providers can make evidence-based decisions regarding clinical treatment and intervention planning for youth most at risk for developmental maladjustment.
Feasibility of transrib focused ultrasound thermal ablation for liver tumors using a spherically curved 2D array: a numerical study.

Abstract:The use of focused ultrasound thermal ablation to treat hepatocarcinoma and other liver tumors produces promising clinical results. However, one of the major drawbacks is the high absorption of ultrasonic energy by the rib, making partial rib removal necessary in many cases. This study numerically investigated the feasibility of using a spherical ultrasound phased array for transrib liver-tumor thermal ablation. An independently array-element activitation scheme, which switches off the transducer elements obstructed by the ribs based on feedback anatomical medical imaging, was proposed to reduce the rib-overheating problem. The numerical results showed that the proposed treatment planning strategy can effectively reduce the specific energy absorbed by the rib while maintaining the energy at the target position, which both reduces the rib-overheating problem and increases the possibility of treating a target lesion under an intact rib. The analysis also demonstrated that the target position and the ultrasound frequency play key roles in the treatment. Patients with diverse characteristics were also tested to show the generality of the proposed strategy. The proposed treatment planning strategy also provides useful information for evaluating the treatment effectiveness prior to clinically performing transrib ultrasound liver-tumor thermal ablation.

Abstract:Exposure to stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic contributes to psychopathology risk, yet not all children are negatively impacted. The current study examined a parasympathetic biomarker of stress sensitivity, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), as a moderator of the effects of exposure to pandemic stress on child internalizing and externalizing behaviors in a sample of children experiencing economic marginalization. Three to five years pre-pandemic, when children were preschool-aged, RSA during baseline and a challenging parent-child interaction were collected. Mid-pandemic, between November 2020 and March 2021, children's exposure to pandemic stress and internalizing and externalizing behaviors were collected. Results demonstrated that children who, pre-pandemic, demonstrated blunted parasympathetic reactivity (i.e., no change in RSA relative to baseline) during the dyadic challenge exhibited elevated risk for externalizing behaviors mid-pandemic. Further, this risk was greatest for children exposed to high and moderate levels of pandemic stress. Consistent with diathesis stress and polyvagal frameworks, these conditional effects suggest that blunted parasympathetic reactivity in response to stress in early childhood may escalate the development of externalizing behaviors following stress exposure at school age.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the lives of families and children, affecting children's adjustment. We examined the impact COVID-19 had on families and how child-rearing disagreements might be linked to child adjustment. Furthermore, given the role that children play in evoking parent responses within the family context, we also investigated how children's temperament trait of anger/frustration might moderate the indirect pathway through child-rearing disagreements. We recruited 516 parents with a child between the ages 3 and 7 to complete an online survey measuring their perceived COVID-19 impact, and family and child functioning. Results indicate that greater COVID-19 impact, and child temperamental anger/frustration were each linked to greater child-rearing disagreements, and thereby, greater child stress. In addition, families reporting the most COVID-19 impact and having a child with high anger/frustration experienced the most child-rearing disagreements, and thereby, greater child anxiety during the pandemic. This work highlights how the COVID pandemic might have disrupted family processes, which in turn had negative consequences on the family, and suggest that less coparenting conflict might be a protective factor on the effect of the pandemic on child outcomes.

Abstract:Objective: Families in the United States experienced tremendous disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluated the relationship of parental stress during the pandemic with interruptions in availability of services (childcare, after-school activities, and medical appointments) for children. Methods: We analyzed data from 2 waves of the Measuring the Impact of Violence Against Children and Women During a Pandemic survey 1 to develop a multivariable logistic regression model of the association between caregivers' stress and pandemic-related disruptions in children's lives. Caregivers' past experiences of childhood abuse, recommended stress-relieving activities, and responses to the statement "helping my child(ren) with their education, including remote schoolwork, has been very stressful and/or has resulted in increased tension at home" were included as covariates. Demographic and socioeconomic variables were examined as potential confounders. Results: In total, 3479 (73.3%) of 4659 respondents reported feeling stressed since the start of the pandemic. For every one-item increase in the number of COVID disruptions in children's lives, the odds of feeling stressed increased by 20% (OR 1.20: p value < 0.0001, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14-1.27). Compared with men, women had 60% higher odds of feeling stressed (odds ratio [OR] 1.60: p value < 0.0001, 95% CI, 1.32-1.93). The covariates listed earlier were all statistically significant. Conclusion: Pandemic-related disruptions in children's lives were significantly associated with caregiver stress. Women were more likely to feel stressed than men. Sex, education, marital status, and family income were also associated with parental stress. These results suggest that childcare continuity and parental support should be part of disaster planning.

Caregiver Perceptions of Children’s Psychological Well-being During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Importance: Understanding youth well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic can help appropriately allocate resources and inform policies to support youth.Objective: To examine caregiver-reported changes in the psychological well-being of their children 3 to 4 months after the start of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, and to examine the association of caregiver-reported COVID-19 exposure and family stressors with caregiver perceptions of child psychological well-being.Design, Setting, and Participants: This survey study used an anonymous survey distributed via email from June 24 to July 15, 2020, to 350 000 families of students attending public schools in Chicago, Illinois. The a priori hypotheses were that caregivers would report worsening in child psychological well-being during the closure period compared with preclosure and that exposure to COVID-19-related stressors would be associated with a higher probability of worsening child psychological well-being. Data were analyzed from September 10, 2020, to March 15, 2021.Main Outcomes and Measures: Outcomes were 7 mental health concerns and 5 positive adjustment characteristics reported by caregivers using a retrospective pre-post design. COVID-19 exposure and family stressors were also reported by caregivers.Results: Among 350 000 families invited to participate, 32 217 caregivers (10 827 [39.3%] White, 8320 [30.2%] Latinx, 6168 [22.4%] Black; 2223 [8.1%] with multiple or other races/ethnicities) completed the survey on behalf of 49 397 children in prekindergarten through 12th grade. Child-specific outcomes were reported for 40 723 to 40 852 children depending on the specific question. The frequency of caregiver endorsement of youth mental health concerns ranged from 0.1 percentage point (suicidal ideation or self-harm, reported by 191 caregivers [0.5%] preclosure vs 246 caregivers [0.6%] during closure; P < .001) to 28.3 percentage points (loneliness, reported by 1452 caregivers [3.6%] preclosure vs 13 019 caregivers [31.9%] during closure; P < .001) higher after the end of in-person instruction compared with preclosure. Frequency of caregiver endorsement of youth positive adjustment characteristics ranged from -13.4 percentage points (plans for the future, reported by 18 114 caregivers [44.3%] preclosure vs 12 601 caregivers [30.9%] during closure; P < .001) to -30.9 percentage points (positive peer relationships, reported by 24 666 caregivers [60.4%] preclosure vs 19 130 caregivers [46.8%] during closure; P < .001) lower after the end of in-person instruction. Significant differences in COVID-19 exposure were observed across racial/ethnic (F3,27 534 = 614.8; P < .001) and household income strata (F5,27 506 = 842.0; P < .001). After accounting for covariates, all mental health concerns increased in probability (eg, angry: odds ratio, 1.55 [95% CI, 1.48-1.62]; P < .001) and all the positive adjustment characteristics decreased in probability (eg, hopeful or positive: odds ratio, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.84-0.92]; P < .001) as COVID-19 exposure and family stressors increased.Conclusions and Relevance: In this survey study of caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19 and resulting exposure to stress were associated with worse youth psychological well-being, demonstrating the need for a comprehensive public health approach that prioritizes children's well-being and draws broad public attention to the mental health needs of youth.

Abstract:Black and Latinx caregivers face high risk for parenting stress and racism-related stress due to experiences of racial discrimination (RD). This study aimed to explore the associations between RD, parenting stress, and psychological distress in caregiver-child dyads, as well as the impact of a mentalizing-focused group intervention on caregivers' experiences of RD distress. Ethnoracially minoritized caregivers of children aged 5–17 years old participated in a non-randomized clinical trial (N = 70). They received either a 12-session mentalizing-focused group parenting intervention or treatment-as-usual in outpatient psychiatry. We assessed self-reported frequency and distress related to RD, parenting stress, and psychological distress at baseline (T1) and post-intervention (T2). Caregiver- and self-reported child psychological distress were also measured. The results showed that greater RD frequency and greater RD distress separately predicted higher overall parenting stress and parental role-related distress. Greater RD distress was linked to increased psychological distress in caregivers. Similarly, greater RD frequency and distress among caregivers were associated with higher caregiver-reported, but not self-reported, child psychological distress. No significant changes in RD distress were observed between T1 and T2 for either of the treatment groups. These findings highlight the exacerbating role of RD on parenting stress and psychological distress among ethnoracially minoritized caregivers and their children.

Betar, Sarah M. Cline, Ziyu Tian, Deborah B. Jacobvitz and Jody S. Nicholson ( Journal of Family Psychology , 2024[Mar], Vol 38[2], 296-308). In the original article, there were some errors. Parenting stress reflects a discrepancy between a parent's perception of their resources, the demands of their child's needs, and the caregiving relationship and contexts (Abidin, 1992). Parenting stress can increase the risk of issues in the parent–child relationship, as well as child behavioral and emotional outcomes (Neece et al., 2012; Spinelli et al., 2021). Chronic stressors, such as living through the COVID-19 pandemic, have the potential to increase the demands of parenting and thus parenting stress. Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined parenting stress trajectories of 298 American parents with young children ( M age = 15.02 months, range = 1–34 months) over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also examined the effects of parental mental health on parenting stress, and the effects of parental mental health and parenting stress on child problem behaviors using data gathered through the Prolific survey platform. Parental mental health, measured by depressive symptoms Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale−10, anxiety symptoms Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and overall stress levels 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, was related to higher initial parenting stress index–short form. Changes in parenting stress over time were linked with higher levels of children's problem behaviors (CBCL). Child temperament was also related to initial parenting stress. Lower levels of household income were linked with higher levels of parental mental health symptoms and higher rates of parenting stress increases over time. These results highlight the importance of considering the well-being of all family members in child outcomes, and the ways in which different experiences and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic affect parental and child well-being. Abstract:The Family Journal, Ahead of Print. Aim: To examine whether the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic moderate the relationship between parental educational practices and children's emotional and behavioral problems. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered family routines, and children, with their limited ability to understand and interpret these changes, have been particularly vulnerable to stress. Method: An explanatory design was used with a sample of 135 Brazilian parents (mothers or fathers) who lived with a child aged between 6 and 11 years. Participants completed the Sociodemographic Data Questionnaire, the Parenting Practices Inventory, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the COVID-19 Stress Response Questionnaire remotely. Results: Coercive discipline significantly interacted with COVID-19 stressors in relation to emotional and behavioral problems. Increased perception of stressors intensified the association between coercive discipline and conduct problems, peer issues, and internalizing problems in children. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the use of coercive discipline, negatively impacting children's mental health. Implications: The findings highlight the need to enhance and reinforce parenting skills to better manage stressful situations, thereby safeguarding the parent-child relationship and mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic on children.

Abstract:Analyzing COVID-19-related stress in children with affective dysregulation (AD) seems especially interesting, as these children typically show heightened reactivity to potential stressors and an increased use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Children in out-of-home care often show similar characteristics to those with AD. Since COVID-19 has led to interruptions in psychotherapy for children with mental health problems and to potentially reduced resources to implement treatment strategies in daily life in families or in out-of-home care, these children might show a particularly strong increase in stress levels. In this study, 512 families of children without AD and 269 families of children with AD reported on COVID-19-related stress. The sample comprised screened community, clinical, and out-of-home care samples. Sociodemographic factors, characteristics of child and caregiver before the pandemic, and perceived change in external conditions due to the pandemic were examined as potential risk or protective factors. Interestingly, only small differences emerged between families of children with and without AD or between subsamples: families of children with AD and families in out-of-home care were affected slightly more, but in few domains. Improvements and deteriorations in treatment-related effects balanced each other out. Overall, the most stable and strongest risk factor for COVID-19-related stress was perceived negative change in external conditions—particularly family conditions and leisure options. Additionally, caregiver characteristics emerged as risk factors across most models. Actions to support families during the pandemic should, therefore, facilitate external conditions and focus on caregiver characteristic to reduce familial COVID-19-related stress. Stress vulnerability and resilience in children facing COVID-19-related discrimination: A quasi-experimental study using polygenic, brain, and sociodemographic data

Abstract:During the pandemic, perceived COVID-19-related discrimination aggravated children’s stress levels. The remaining question is to evaluate the individual variability in these effects and to identify vulnerable or resilient populations and why. Using the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development dataset ( = 1,116) and causal machine learning approach – Generalized Random Forest, we examined the average and individual treatment effects of perceived discrimination on stress levels immediately and six months later. Their variability and key factors were also assessed. We observed significant variability in the acute effects of perceived discrimination across children and pinpointed the frontotemporal cortical volume and white matter connectivity (streamline counts) as key factors of stress resilience and vulnerability. The variability of these neurostructural factors partially originated from the environmental and genetic attributes. The finding was replicated in held-out samples ( = 2,503). Our study has the potential for personalized prescriptive modeling to prevent children’s future psychopathology after the pandemic.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>COVID-19 has introduced novel stressors into American adolescents' lives. Studies have shown that adolescents adopt an array of coping mechanisms and social supports when contending with stress. It is unclear, though, which strategies are most effective in mitigating daily pandemic-related stress, as few micro-longitudinal studies have explored adolescents' daily affect during COVID-19. Parental support may also be a critical component of adolescents' pandemic-related coping, as adolescents' peer networks have been limited by public health measures.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>This longitudinal study examined links between stress, coping, parental support, and affect across 14 consecutive days and 6,216 assessments from a national sample of adolescents (<em>N</em>=444; <em>M<sub>age</sub></em>=15.0; 60% female; 44% Black, 39% White, 9% Latinx, 6% Asian American, 2% Native American) during school closures and state-mandated stay-at-home orders between April 8 and April 21, 2021.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Adolescents' health and financial stress predicted increases in same-day (health stress' effect size = .16; financial stress' effect size = .11) and next-day negative affect (health stress' effect size = .05; financial stress' effect size = .08). Adolescents' secondary control engagement coping predicted increases in same-day (effect size = .10) and next-day (effect size = .04) positive affect and moderated the link between health stress and negative affect. Parental social support predicted increases in same-day (effect size = .26) and next-day (effect size = .06) positive affect and decreases in same-day (effect size = -.17) negative affect and moderated the link between financial stress and negative affect.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Limitations</h3><p>Results are indicative of conditions at the immediate onset of COVID-19 and should be interpreted as such.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Findings provide information as to how health providers and parents can help adolescents mitigate the impact of COVID-19-related health and economic stressors on their psychological well-being. It remains critical to monitor the psychosocial impact of the pandemic on adolescents' affect while continuing to identify personal and environmental protective factors for reducing harm and maximizing resilience.</p>

Abstract:Life course-informed theories of development suggest it is important to integrate information about positive and negative aspects of the social environment into studies of child and parental wellbeing, including both stressors that compromise health and resources that promote well-being. We recruited a sample of 169 pairs of caregivers and young children (birth to 5 years) from a community health clinic and administered survey questions to assess stressors and resources. We constructed inventories of stressors and resources and examined the relationships between these inventories and caregivers’ depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and sleep problems, and young children’s medical diagnoses derived from electronic health records. Cumulative stressors and resources displayed bivariate and adjusted associations with caregivers’ depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and sleep problems. For depressive and anxiety symptoms, these associations were evident in models that included stressors and resources together. Caregivers with high stressors and low resources displayed the highest levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems. In terms of children’s health outcomes, only modest trends were evident for developmental/mental health outcomes, but not other diagnostic categories. Future studies are needed to examine stressors and resources together in larger samples and in relation to prospectively assessed measures of child well-being.
