Abstract:Soil physical structure causes differential accessibility of soil organic matter (SOM), including carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools, to decomposer organisms and is an important determinant of SOM storage. Physical fractionation method of SOM in conjunction with elemental as well as isotopic analyses (C, N, δ13C, δ15N) of those soil fractions are used in this study to determine the land use and management-induced changes of SOM and associated processes in three adjacent sites of native forest (NF), first (1R) and second rotation (2R, including tree planting row (2R-T) and windrow of harvest residues (2R-W)) of hoop pine plantations in southeast Queensland, Australia. The results suggest that there is a greater accumulation of C and N in the light fraction (LF) of NF site than that of plantation sites (1R and 2R), and the C and N losses following conversion from mixed species NF to the single-species plantation are attributed to the reduction in C and N stocks for all physical fractions separated by wet sieving. In contrast, the C and N losses induced by the rotation practices (e.g., between 1R and 2R-T) are attributed to the C and N decreases in the LF and macroaggregates (250–2000 µm) only. The C and N increases upon the residue management (e.g., between 2R-W and 2R-T) are primarily attributed to the C and N increases in the LF and macroaggregates as well. Coupled with 30 soil chemical and biological parameters obtained in our previous studies, further principal component and multivariable regression analyses were conducted and the results showed that both the LF and macroaggregates were highly related to the status of C and N pools, the processes of N transformation and soil respiration, and the diversity of microbial communities, and thus could serve as diagnostic SOM fractions responsible for the changes of soil properties and processes within the tested ecosystem induced by the land uses and management practices. Knowledge of the interactive relationships between aggregate classes within SOM and soil chemical and biological processes in this study represents a further step towards diagnostically measuring and understanding important soil C and N processes in response to the land use and management changes in the soil ecosystems such as forests in subtropical Australia.
Aggregate Size Mediated the Changes in Soil Microbial Communities After the Afforestation of a Former Dryland in Northwestern China

Abstract:Although the afforestation of former arable lands is a common global land-use conversion, its impact on soil microbial communities at the aggregate scale has not been adequately addressed. In this study, soil samples were categorized into large macroaggregates (LM, >2 mm), small macroaggregates (SM, 2–0.25 mm), and microaggregates (MI, <0.25 mm) to assess the changes in microbial composition, diversity, network complexity, and network stability within soil aggregates after the afforestation of a former dryland in northwestern China. The results revealed that afforestation enhanced the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota within the soil aggregates, suggesting that these phyla may have greater advantages in microbial communities post-afforestation. The Shannon–Wiener and Pielou indices for bacterial communities showed no significant differences between land-use types across all aggregate fractions. However, the alpha diversity of fungal communities within the LM and SM significantly increased after afforestation. Bray–Curtis dissimilarity indices showed that afforestation altered bacterial beta diversity within the LM and MI but had a minimal impact on fungal beta diversity across all three aggregate fractions. The topological features of cross-kingdom microbial co-occurrence networks within the soil aggregates generally exhibited a decreasing trend post-afforestation, indicating a simplification of microbial community structure. The reduced robustness of microbial networks within the LM and SM fractions implies that afforestation also destabilized the structure of microbial communities within the macroaggregates. The composition of the soil microbial communities correlated closely with soil carbon and nitrogen contents, especially within the two macroaggregate fractions. The linkages suggests that improved resource conditions could be a key driver behind the shifts in microbial communities within soil aggregates following afforestation. Our findings indicate that the impact of afforestation on soil microbial ecology can be better understood by soil aggregate fractionation.

Abstract:Soil microbes regulate the carbon cycle and affect the formation and stabilization of soil aggregates. However, the interactions between the soil microbial community and soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, organic carbon (OC) content in aggregates, and soil aggregate stability after afforestation are remain poorly understood. In our study, we investigated SOC fractions in bulk soil, aggregate-associated OC content, soil aggregate stability, and soil bacterial community with high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing at sites representing natural secondary forest (NF) and managed forest (MF), with cropland (CL) as reference in a degraded karst region of Southwest China. Our results showed that afforestation remarkably increased the SOC fraction and OC content in aggregates, the mean weight diameter (MWD), and the mean geometric diameter (GMD). The most dominant bacterial phyla detected were Acidobacteriota , Actinobacteriota , Proteobacteria , and Chloroflexi across all soils. Afforestation remarkably altered the relative abundances of most of the dominant soil bacteria at the phylum, class, and order levels. Interestingly, such changes in the abundance of soil bacteria taxa had significantly effects on SOC fraction, aggregate-associated OC content, MWD, and MGD. The abundance of dominant bacterial taxa such as Methylomirabilota , Latescibacterota , Methylomirabilia , MB-A2-108 , norank_Latescibacterota ; Dehalococcoidia , Rokubacteriales , Gaiellales , Microtrichales , norank_c__MB-A2-108 , norank_c__norank_p__Latescibacterota , Rhizobiales , and S085 not only remarkably increased but also had significant positive effects on SOC fractions and aggregate-associated OC content after afforestation. Moreover, MWD and MGD were positively correlated with the relative abundance of Methylomirabilota , Methylomirabilia , Rokubacteriales , Latescibacterota , and Rhizobiales . Results indicated the importance of certain soil bacteria for regulating SOC storage and soil aggregate stability. We concluded that afforestation on cropland could alter the abundance of soil bacteria, and these changes modulate the stability of soil aggregates and SOC fractions.

Abstract:Abstract Background Despite the crucial role of nitrogen (N) availability in carbon (C) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, soil organic C (SOC) mineralization in different sizes of soil aggregates under various land use types and their responses to N addition is not well understood. To investigate the responses of soil C mineralization in different sized aggregates and land use types to N addition, an incubation experiment was conducted with three aggregate-size classes (2000, 250, and 53 μm) and two land use types (a Chinese fir plantation and a paddy land). Results Cumulative C mineralization of the < 53-μm fractions was the highest and that of microaggregates was the lowest in both forest and paddy soils, indicating that soil aggregates enhanced soil C stability and reduced the loss of soil C. Cumulative C mineralization in all sizes of aggregates treated with N addition decreased in forest soils, but that in microaggregates and the < 53-μm fraction increased in paddy soils treated with 100 μg N g −1 . Moreover, the effect sizes of N addition on C mineralization of forest soils were below zero, but those of paddy soils were above zero. These data indicated that N addition decreased SOC mineralization of forest soils but increased that of paddy soils. Conclusions Soil aggregates play an important role in soil C sequestration, and decrease soil C loss through the increase of soil C stability, regardless of land use types. N addition has different effects on soil C mineralization in different land use types. These results highlight the importance of soil aggregates and land use types in the effects of N deposition on the global terrestrial ecosystem C cycle.

Abstract:Understanding the effect of land use on soil carbon, nitrogen, and microbial activity associated with aggregates is critical for thorough comprehension of the C and N dynamics of karst landscapes/ecosystems. We monitored soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and Cmic: Corg ratio in large macro- (>2 mm), small macro- (0.25–2 mm), and micro- (0.053–0.25 mm) aggregates to determine the changes in soil properties under different land uses in the karst area of Southwest China. Five common land-use types—enclosure land (natural system, control), prescribed-burning land, fuel-wood shrubland, pasture and maize fields—were selected. Results showed that pasture and maize fields remarkably decreased the SOC and TN concentrations in aggregates. Conversion of natural system to other land uses decreased MBC (except for prescribed-burning) and increased Cmic: Corg ratios in aggregates. The extent of the response to land uses of SOC and TN concentrations was similar whereas that of MBC and Cmic: Corg ratios differed across the three aggregate sizes. Further, the SOC concentrations were significantly higher in macro-aggregates than micro-aggregates; the MBC and Cmic: Corg ratios were highest in small macro-aggregates. Therefore, small macro-aggregates might have more active C dynamics.

Abstract:The ecological consequences of converting tropical forests to rubber plantations on the soil microbial compositions and diversity remain unknown. By using an Illumina MiSeq sequencing analysis, we assessed the compositions and diversity of bacterial and fungal community in soils of rubber plantation (or rubber forest, RF), secondary tropical forest (STF), and tropical seasonal rainforest (TSR) in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. Our findings revealed that (a) for bacterial composition, Bacillaceae was the most dominant family (13.60%) in RF soil, while it only accounted for 4.13% in STF and 6.92% in TSR. For fungal composition, the largest family in soils of RF was Basidiomycota_unclassified. However, the largest family in STF and TSR was Russulaceae. (b) Number of operational taxonomic units, Chao index, and Shannon index of bacterial community in soil of RF were significantly higher than those of TSR and STF. However, these diversity indices of fungal community in RF were significantly lower than those of TSR and STF. (c) Soil pH and total phosphorus were very important drivers for bacterial community, whereas soil organic matter and total nitrogen were the most important factors for fungal community. (d) The microbial biomass carbon in RF was relative lower than those in STF and TSR, which suggested that the total microbial biomass decreased after forest conversion. To protect the total diversity of this region, the individual farmers should use herbicides as little as possible to reserve ground vegetation. And the government could outline a land-use policy that prohibits the cultivation in areas of natural vegetation.

Impact of Different Land Use Types on Bacterial and Fungal Communities in a Typical Karst Depression in Southwestern China

Abstract:Understanding the land use pattern relationships regarding the composition, diversity, and abundance of soil microbial communities in a typical karst depression in southwestern China is crucial for assessing the stability of local karst ecosystems. However, these aspects in typical karst depressions within northern tropical karst seasonal rainforests in China remain limited. Therefore, we examined the differences in soil microorganism abundance, diversity, community composition, and co-occurrence networks under five land use types in a tropical karst region in southwestern China: sugarcane fields, orchards, grasslands, plantation forests, and secondary forests. The soil microbial communities of samples from these areas were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplification. The abundances of Acidobacteria and Ascomycota were lowest (20.66% and 66.55%, respectively) in secondary forests and highest (35.59% and 89.35%, respectively) in sugarcane fields. Differences in microbial abundance across land use types were related to soil pH and total phosphorus. PCoA and ANOSIM demonstrated significant differences in soil bacterial and fungal community structures among the five land use types. Bacterial alpha-diversity showed no significant variation among the different land uses, whereas fungal alpha-diversity exhibited significant differences. Observed Chao1, ACE, and Shannon indices indicated that secondary forests had the highest fungal alpha-diversity. Land use changes also influenced bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks, with the networks in secondary forests, plantation forests, and orchards being more complex and stable than those in grasslands and sugarcane fields. Key taxa such as Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota were predominantly connected within the co-occurrence networks, highlighting their high functional potential. This study provides insights that can inform more effective land use planning and management strategies in karst depressions, thereby enhancing ecological sustainability and balance.

Abstract:Many researches have been carried out on the effects of forest conversion on soil microbial community composition and diversity. However, impacts on soil microbial functions and how diversity change across scales are poorly understood. To fill the research gap, metagenomic sequencing and 16S rRNA and ITS gene sequences were used to evaluate the microbial composition, diversity and function of 260 soil samples collected from tropical rainforest and rubber plantation sites across Hainan Island, South China. The results revealed that: (1) forest conversion resulted in shifts in microbial composition (from the Proteobacteria to Chloroflexi), archaeal composition (from Thaumarchaeota to Bathyarchaeota), and fungal composition (from Basidiomycota to Ascomycota). (2) Bacterial alpha, beta and gamma diversity were not reduced by forest conversion. However, fungal beta diversity was lower in the plantations, resulting in a decrease in gamma diversity. Archaeal beta diversity was higher in rainforest versus rubber plantation soils, but archaeal gamma diversity showed the opposite pattern. (3) Soil functional composition and diversity did not differ with forest type; however, genes related to metabolism and degradation processes were significantly more abundant in the tropical rainforest. These changes in gene abundance could alter ecosystem processes. (4) Soil pH and environmental heterogeneity were the main drivers of microbial taxonomic composition and functional gene composition. Land use explained 13.28% of the variation in taxonomic composition, but did not explain changes in functional gene composition. In conclusion, land use changes can alter soil microbial community structure and have profound effects on ecosystem functions and processes.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Soil microbial communities play vital roles in nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning but these communities could be affected by land use change. To understand the impacts of land use change on soil microbial communities, we assessed the relative abundance of soil microbial communities and soil physicochemical properties following stand conversion from native broadleaf forests to mixed and bamboo forests in Feng yang Mountain Nature Reserve, China. We used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiling analysis to determine the composition of microbial communities, quantified soil bulk density, pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations to determine soil physicochemical properties, and assessed species richness and evenness to determine vegetation structure. We found that the abundance of anaerobic bacteria was significantly higher in the bamboo forests than in broad-leaved or mixed forests, while the abundance of 16:1 omega 5c was significantly lower in the mixed forests than other forests. The relative abundance of 16:1 omega 5c was positively correlated with soil pH, while the abundance of anaerobic bacteria was negatively correlated with soil phosphorus concentration. Among the three different land use types, bamboo forest was characterized by significantly higher soil pH, while the broad-leaved forest had significantly higher nitrogen concentration, and mixed forest had significantly higher soil bulk density. Overall, the composition of microbial communities in native broad-leaved forest was distinct from converted forests in the relative abundance of anaerobic bacteria and 16:1 omega 5c, underscoring the fact that land use change can have a profound impact on soil microbial composition. Land-use changes alter soil bacterial composition and diversity in tropical forest soil in China

Abstract:Tropical forests, under pressure from human activities, are important reservoirs of biodiversity and regulators of global biogeochemical cycles. Land-use and management are influential drivers of environmental change and ecosystem sustainability. However, only limited studies have analysed the impacts of planting age and vegetation type under land-use change on soil microbial community in tropical forests simultaneously. Here, we assessed soil bacterial community composition and diversity under different land-use in Hainan Province, China, using high-throughput sequencing combined with PICRUSt analysis. Land-use included natural forest, 5-year-old cropland, young (5-year-old) rubber tree plantation, and old (30-year-old) rubber tree plantation. Land-use changes altered the soil bacterial community composition but had a non-significant influence on alpha diversity (P > .05). We found that bacterial beta-diversity significantly decreased in young rubber tree plantation soils and cropland soils compared to natural forest as a control. In contrast, soil bacterial beta-diversity increased in old rubber tree plantation soils, indicating the effects of time since planting. There was no difference in microbial beta-diversity between soils from cropland and young rubber tree plantation. Soil bulk density and moisture, not pH, were the main environmental factors explaining the variability in microbial diversity. PICRUSt analysis of soil bacterial predicted gene abundances within metabolic pathways and indicated that land-use change altered soil functional traits, e.g., amino acid-related enzymes, ribosomes, DNA repair/recombination proteins and oxidative phosphorylation. Also, vegetation type, not planting age, had significant impacts on soil functional traits. Overall, planting age had the greatest influence on soil bacterial beta-diversity, while vegetation type was more crucial for soil functional traits (P < .05).

Dynamic characteristics of soil aggregate stability and related carbon and nitrogen pools at different developmental stages of plantations in northern China

Abstract:The carbon and nitrogen reserves of forest soil play a key role in combating global climate change. Afforestation is considered an effective measure for increasing carbon and nitrogen reserves in terrestrial forest ecosystems. However, the mechanisms governing how different developmental stages of plantations affect soil carbon and nitrogen stability and storage remain unclear. In this study, we selected three developmental stages of the Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations: medium mature forest (30 yr), near mature forest (40 yr) and mature forest (50 yr). We studied the distribution and stability of soil aggregates at distinct developmental stages, the distribution of carbon and nitrogen pools related to aggregates, and their relationship to environmental factors. We found that with increasing forest age, the soil sand particles became finer. In each developmental stage, the proportion of aggregates >0.25 mm reached more than 85%. The concentrations of carbon and nitrogen in the soil aggregates were lower in the near mature forest (40 a) than in the medium mature forest (30 a), but reached a maximum in the mature forest (50 a). There were significant positive correlations between soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations and soil relative water content (RWC), forest age, and stand density. Soil texture strongly affected the distribution of aggregates. TOC/TN was mainly influenced by aggregate distribution, which was most vulnerable to environmental factors. Environmental factors have a significant negative impact on soil texture, and the path coefficient was -0.812. Environmental factors indirectly affected the concentrations of soil carbon and nitrogen by influencing the distribution and stability of soil aggregates. Therefore, different developmental stages of plantations strongly affected forest carbon and nitrogen pools by changing the soil structure and environmental factors. This study provides a basis for understanding the mechanisms of forest soil carbon and nitrogen storage.
Higher Soil Aggregate Stability in Subtropical Coniferous Plantations Than Natural Forests Due to Microbial and Aggregate Factors

Abstract:Forest restoration and soil structure stabilization are the focus of forestry and ecology. However, the combined mechanisms of soil microorganisms and organic and inorganic aggregate binding agents on soil aggregation is unclear. In order to explore the effects of subtropical forest restoration types on soil aggregates and the underlying mechanisms, we collected soil samples from subtropical natural forests and coniferous and broad-leaved plantations that are commonly used for forest restoration. The mean weight diameter (MWD) of the soil aggregate was used to indicate the aggregates’ stability. The soil microbial diversity and structure, the organic and inorganic aggregate binding agents including the mycorrhizal density, the glomalin-related soil protein and the Fe and Al oxides were investigated. Results showed that the Shannon and Simpson indices of soil microbial communities in the coniferous plantations were both significantly higher than those in the natural forests. At the annual level, compared with the natural forests, the plantations decreased the proportion of 0.25–1 mm aggregates while the MWD significantly increased. The forest type also significantly affected the mycorrhizal density, the easily extractable glomalin-related soil proteins (EEG) and the Fe oxide. A variance decomposition analysis showed that soil microbial communities, organic and inorganic binding agents, and their interactions together contributed to the aggregates’ composition and stability by 75.07%. The MWD was positively correlated with the microbial diversity, mycorrhizal density and Fe oxide. We therefore suggest that the combined effects of the soil microbial communities and the organic (mycorrhizal density) and inorganic binding agents (Fe oxide) can be the main mechanisms of soil aggregation in the study area, resulting in a higher soil aggregate stability in the subtropical coniferous plantation than in the natural forest.

Abstract:Forest conversion can strongly affect soil organic carbon (SOC) via modifying soil microbial community (SMC) structure. This process is particularly intense in rhizosphere since rhizosphere is the microbial hotspot in soils. However, the relationship between SMC structure in rhizosphere soil and aggregate-SOC regarding long-term land-use change remains unclear. Here, a 36-year conversion from natural forest to three typical plantations, i.e., Cunninghamia lanceolata (CL), Metasequoia glyptostroboides (MG) and Cryptomeria fortunei (CF), was investigated in subtropical region, with a natural forest (NF) as the control. SMC structures in bulk and rhizosphere soils (0–10 cm depth) were detected, and their potential linkages with bulk- and aggregate-SOC contents were analyzed. SMC structure in rhizosphere soil was distinctly differentiated from that in bulk soil and evidently separated between NF and the plantations, which was dominated by gram-negative bacteria (GN) and fungi. NF (1.61 g kg−1 soil) had significantly lower (P < 0.05) aggregate-SOC of <53 μm (F53–SOC) content than all the plantations while MG had the highest mass percentage of F53 (6%) among the forests. Bulk-SOC content showed nonsignificant differences among the forests. Furthermore, fungi and the ratios of fungi to bacteria and gram-positive bacteria to GN in rhizosphere soil had positive correlations with F53–SOC content. These results suggest that SMC structure in rhizosphere soil can effectively characterize the dynamics of aggregate-SOC content than that in bulk soil over more than three decades after forest conversion. Abstract:The biogeochemical cycles, carbon sequestration, and climate change all are significantly influenced by tropical rainforests, which is one of the world's most productive ecosystems and hotspots for biodiversity. Plantation crops like Rubber ( Hevea brasiliensis ) have displaced significant forest cover in the Asia pacific in the last two centuries due to their increasing demand. As a case study, we examined the soils of native forest (NF), rubber monoculture (RP) and three different managements i.e., cover crop (CC), weed crop (WC) and inter crop (IC) to understand the changes in microbial community structure across each practice and to estimate the influence of forest conversion to rubber monoculture on the soil microbiome . Soils were collected using nested sampling pattern and subjected to physiochemical characterization and whole metagenome sequencing. Results revealed that bacteria (60.56 M reads) predominated all land use types, followed by eukaryotes (0.52 M reads) and archaea (0.72 M reads). NF exhibited significantly higher bacterial richness and diversity then other land-use type. Interestingly, total functional diversity as well as genes associated with chemotaxis, flagellar assembly, and secretion systems were significantly higher in other land-use systems as compared to NF. Altogether, the results from this study indicate that the three different land use types used here like CC, IC, and WC has high abundance of functional diversity and biological profile compared to NF and RP. The study suggests that the adoption of aforementioned land-use management practices could play a significant role in fostering sustainable plantations in the tropics.

Abstract:Afforestation currently makes a great contribution to carbon uptake in terrestrial ecosystems, while dramatically affects soil ecosystem functions too. Little is known, however, about the changes in soil fungal functional groups and their interactions following afforestation. Here, based on high-throughput sequencing and FUNGuild annotation, we investigated the functional characteristics of soil fungi as well as environmental factors in a watershed where paddy field and dry farmland were changed to eucalyptus plantation. The results showed that afforestation on paddy field resulted in greater changes in diversity, community structure and taxon interactions of fungal functional groups than afforestation on dry farmland. The most complex and distinctive community structure was found in eucalyptus plantation, as well as the greatest taxon interactions, and the lowest alpha-diversity of functional guilds of symbiotrophic fungi because of the dominant ectomycorrhizal fungi. Paddy field exhibited the highest proportion of saprotrophic fungi, but the lowest taxonomic diversity of saprotrophic and pathotrophic fungi. The taxonomic diversity of undefined saprotrophic fungi shaped the differences in community structure and network complexity between eucalyptus plantation and cropland. Limited cooperation within dominant fungi was the main reason for the establishment of a loose co-occurrence network in paddy field. From croplands to artificial forests, reduced soil pH boosted the taxonomic diversity of fungal functional groups. All of these findings suggested that afforestation may lead to an increase in the taxonomic diversity of soil fungal functional groups, which would further intensify the taxon interactions.

Abstract:Abstract. Soil microbial communities play a crucial role in ecosystem functioning. Past research has examined the effects of forest conversion on soil microbial composition and diversity, but it remains unknown how networks within these communities respond to forest conversion, including when tropical rainforests are replaced with rubber plantations. Microbial networks are viewed as critical indicators of soil health and quality. They consist of two parts: nodes and edges. In this study, we used data from Illumina sequencing and shotgun metagenome sequencing to analyze bacterial and fungal community network structure in a large number of soil samples from tropical rainforests and rubber plantation sites on Hainan Island, China. Our results showed that only 5 %–10 % of shared network edges (i.e., links between species A and B existing in both rubber plantations and rainforests) were observed in both bacterial and fungal communities, which indicates that forest conversion altered the soil microbial network structure. The identity of keystone operational taxonomic units (OTUs) differed entirely between rubber plantation and rainforest sites, further underscoring the altered network structure. More edges and more negative correlations within the soil bacterial–fungal networks were observed at rubber plantation sites (dry season: 4284 total edges, 844 negative; rainy season: 7257 total edges, 1744 negative) than at rainforest sites (dry season: 3650 total edges, 149 negative; rainy season: 6018 total edges, 489 negative), demonstrating that soil bacterial–fungal network structure was more complex and stable in rubber plantations than in rainforests. For bacteria, a larger number of network edges were observed among bacterial networks in samples from tropical rainforest than in samples from rubber plantations, indicating that rainforest bacterial networks were more complex than those from rubber plantations. However, soil fungal networks from rubber plantations showed more links, suggesting that forest conversion increased fungal network complexity. More edges of network and more links between species and functions were observed in the rainy season than in the dry season, indicating that seasonal changes had a strong effect on network structure and function. Further analysis shows that soil pH, potassium (AK), and total nitrogen (TN) had more links with species of some phyla. In conclusion, forest conversion results in an increase in soil pH as well as a decrease in AK and TN, and these changes as well as seasonal variations had a great impact on soil microbial composition, network structure and function.

Abstract:Rubber-based agroforestry systems increased the complexity of fungal networks.Fungal community structure was strongly correlated with soil pH and SOC.Rubber-based agroforestry systems reduced the presence of certain pathogens.Rubber-based agroforestry systems have been recognized as a practical and sustainable solution to promote the development of agriculture and the environment. However, interactions between fungal communities and these systems are still not sufficiently investigated. In this study, we compared the abundance, diversity, and community composition of soil fungi in four treatments, including rubber monoculture and three rubber-based agro-forestry treatments involving intercropping with Camellia sinensis, Coffea liberica, and Theobroma cacao. The results revealed that the community composition exhibited significant variation between the four different treatments, while the overall soil α-diversity was relatively stable across all treatments. Soil pH and soil organic carbon were significantly related to the structure of the fungal community. In particular, the complexity of the functional fungal network increased in response to agroforestry treatments, promoting beneficial fungi and suppressing certain plant pathogens. These results suggest that rubber-based agroforestry systems can promote the health of soil microbial community composition, and therefore provide an effective approach to enhancing soil quality.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt(110) exhibits, for certain sets of control parameters, oscillatory kinetics and spatiotemporal pattern formation which may be followed by photoemission electron microscopy. Within a very narrow range of conditions, these patterns consist of solitary waves with bell-shaped profiles which propagate with a constant velocity of about 3 \ensuremath{\mu}m/s along the crystallographic [001] axis of the surface. Collision of pulses traveling in opposite directions leads mostly to annihilation, but in some cases the two waves emerge again with unchanged shapes and velocities, as characteristic for solitons.
Land-use type strongly shapes community composition, but not always diversity of soil microbes in tropical China

Abstract:Forest secondary succession and conversion to an agricultural use are rapidly altering tropical forests, and this alteration has consequences on soil microbial communities. Using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and internal transcribed spacer regions, we compared bacteria and fungi community composition and diversity in soils between the three stages of forest succession (primary forest, PF; secondary forest, SF; pioneer plant community dominated by Macaranga denticulate trees, PP) and two agricultural drylands (rubber plantation, RP; Plukenetia volubilis plantation, PV) in Xishuangbanna, a tropical region of China, and identified the factors associated with the shift in community composition across the five land-use types. The results indicated that the most abundant bacterial genera (Bacillus, Kitasatospora, Nitrospira and Streptacidiphilus) were found at differentially relative abundances among the five land-use types. Through the analysis of indicator species, several bacterial species were significantly associated with the PP site; one to four species were significantly associated to the other sites. Strikingly, almost all fungal genera had site-specific characteristic. Soil properties, especially pH and available P and K, were associated with microbial community composition. Across the three stages of forest succession, bacterial and fungal richness and bacterial alpha diversity had the lowest levels in the earliest stage (PP), but there were no significant differences in microbial richness or diversity between the late stages (PF vs. SF). Compared to PF and SF with their similar bacterial and fungal diversity, the agricultural drylands (RP and PV) had higher bacterial richness but lower fungal richness, indicating that both PF and SF can act as reservoirs for the recolonisation of forest-associated microbes. Overall, these results showed a distinct difference in soil microbe taxonomic composition, especially in fungi, among the various land-use types, even at a very small geographical scale (<4 km), but no great difference of microbial diversity was found between the late stages of forest succession and agricultural drylands. Tropical forest succession and forest conversion to agricultural drylands strongly affect the distribution of microbial species, whereas microbial diversity may not always tightly follow the same successional trajectories.
