Abstract:Human beings experience a large fraction of their exposure to air pollutants in indoor environments. Air pollution is a large environmental health risk, and exposure to ambient air pollution and indoor air pollution contribute equally to the total number of fatalities worldwide. Although legislative authorities have established limit values for ambient outdoor air and stack emissions, there are inconsistent and variable national and regional limit values for gaseous substances and airborne particulate matter in the built environment (schools, homes, healthcare facilities, offices, and other public spaces). This lack of regulation is unsurprising, because indoor spaces are characterized by complex air chemistry, and their construction materials and types of activities vary significantly. The current understanding of indoor pollutants, including short-lived oxidants, degradation of VOCs, particle formation, and particle composition, is incomplete. It is necessary to identify and assess emerging pollutants and their toxicity, and to consider new consumer products and green construction materials and their impact on indoor air quality (IAQ). Learning from IAQ surveys and audit protocols, research methodologies should be regularized for cross-research comparisons. Some indoor air quality guidance and standards have been written, and several more are in development, with the international ISO 16000 series of indoor standards leading the way for improving indoor air data quality. The WHO has established some ambient air limit values which can mostly be translated into indoor limit values. The built environment needs to harmonize energy efficiency, thermal comfort and air quality standards and guidance. In this review, we discuss the next steps for improving international, regional and national standards and guidance, leading to better and more complete indoor air quality regulations.

Abstract:Worldwide people tend to spend approximately 90% of their time in different indoor environments. Along with the penetration of outside air pollutants, contaminants are produced in indoor environments due to different activities such as heating, cooling, cooking, and emissions from building products and the materials used. As people spend most of their lives in indoor environments, this has a significant influence on human health and productivity. Despite the two decades of indoor air quality (IAQ) research from different perspectives, there is still a lack of comprehensive evaluation of peer-reviewed IAQ studies that specifically covers the relationship between the internal characteristics of different types of building environments with IAQ to help understand the progress and limitations of IAQ research worldwide. Therefore, this review of scientific studies presents a broad spectrum of pollutants identified in both residential and commercial indoor environments, highlighting the trends and gaps in IAQ research. Moreover, analysis of literature data enabled us to assess the different IAQs in buildings located in different countries/regions, thus reflecting the current global scientific understanding of IAQ. This review has the potential to benefit building professionals by establishing indoor air regulations that account for all indoor contaminant sources to create healthy and sustainable building environments.

Abstract:Indoor air quality (IAQ) indicators have been set by various building standards and certifications to evaluate indoor environments. The goal of this study is to review and compare IAQ requirements, including indoor air pollutant types and concentration limitations. 26 standards and certifications developed by governments, non-profit organizations, and associations were selected from six countries and an international organization. The standards and certifications were classified into basic, green, and health levels depending on their positioning and content. The basic level was the bottom line for indoor air hygiene, the green level expected to improve IAQ but with a greater focus on energy and sustainability, and the health level's primary target was to promote occupant health and well-being. IAQ indicators, including pollutant types and concentration limits, were compared in regards to organic compounds, inorganic compounds, particulate matter, and others at the overall, same, and different levels. Formaldehyde, benzene, carbon dioxide, particulate matter, and radon were the pollutants mostly considered by all three levels of standards and certifications. For many organic pollutants and particulate matter, Chinese standards are progressively stricter from basic to health level. This however is not always true for other standards. For inorganic pollutants, the latter two levels were usually not more stringent than the basic level. Currently, even health-level standards still do not consider the IAQ requirements related to epidemic prevention. Based on the target and positioning of the health-level standard, IAQ requirements may continue to improve in the future and enhance the consideration of epidemic prevention.

Abstract:The use of sustainable assessment methods in the UK is on the rise, anticipating the future regulatory trajectory towards zero carbon by 2016. The indisputable influence of sustainable rating tools on UK building regulations conveys the importance of evaluating their effectiveness in achieving true sustainable design, without adversely effecting human health and well-being. This paper reviews indoor air-quality (IAQ) issues addressed by UK sustainable assessment tools, and the potential trade-offs between building energy conservation and IAQ. The barriers to effective adoption of IAQ strategies are investigated, including recommendations, suggestions, and future research needs. The review identified a fundamental lack of IAQ criteria in sustainable assessment tools aimed at the residential sector. The consideration of occupants' health and well-being should be paramount in any assessment scheme, and should not be overshadowed or obscured by the drive towards energy efficiency. A balance is essential.

Abstract:Deterioration in indoor air quality can lead to various diseases linked to the growth of microorganisms or the presence of pollutants and allergens. Other collective non-specific symptoms affecting various bodily functions (ENT, ocular, respiratory, dermal, neurological) can occur in a building, then disappear when the people affected leave the building. In both cases, a medical and environmental investigation may identify clinical aspects and search for sources of pollution or faults in the ventilation system. The audit results and interpretation of the observed concentrations compared with reference values may provide information to help understand the problems encountered. Various tools are currently available to control and assess indoor air quality during the construction or renovation of a building, and while it is operational. Three main categories may be identified: 1/ preventative measures taking account of sources of pollution from both inside and outside the building and the ventilation system, 2/ protocols for measuring various parameters on at the delivery stage and in operation, and 3/ measurement tools providing continuous information on indoor air quality.

We have heard about outdoor air pollution but indoor air pollution is even more harmful to human health. It is being observed that Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is getting worse day by day leading to many lung diseases, breathing issues, low birth rate, eye-related diseases, perinatal conditions, etc. Hence these issues have to be considered before getting too late. Indoor air quality varies from regions i.e. in the case of developed countries; cooling-heating appliances, electric devices, petroleum products, etc. are the major contributors to deplete IAQ. While in case of developing countries which have a huge number of rural areas; biomass open fires, traditional cooking systems with direct fire expose or indoor stove, etc. are the major factors behind damaged indoor air quality. Generally, children and aged persons spend most of their time inside the house. These people have low immunity hence they get easily affected by depleted IAQ and face many health-related issues. There is a long list of harmful pollutants like NOX, COX, SOX, organic matter, etc. that play a significant role in damaging air quality. A ventilation system is essential in offices, theatres, malls, homes, etc. but the occupant devices lower the air quality index. Likewise, green-house effects increase the percentage of COX which damages nature and human health as well. All these factors, parameters, adverse effects and solutions are studied in this paper.

Indoor Exposure to Selected Air Pollutants in the Home Environment: A Systematic Review

Abstract:(1) Background: There is increasing awareness that the quality of the indoor environment affects our health and well-being. Indoor air quality (IAQ) in particular has an impact on multiple health outcomes, including respiratory and cardiovascular illness, allergic symptoms, cancers, and premature mortality. (2) Methods: We carried out a global systematic literature review on indoor exposure to selected air pollutants associated with adverse health effects, and related household characteristics, seasonal influences and occupancy patterns. We screened records from six bibliographic databases: ABI/INFORM, Environment Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, PubMed, ProQuest Biological and Health Professional, and Scopus. (3) Results: Information on indoor exposure levels and determinants, emission sources, and associated health effects was extracted from 141 studies from 29 countries. The most-studied pollutants were particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10); nitrogen dioxide (NO2); volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, xylenes and formaldehyde; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including naphthalene. Identified indoor PM2.5 sources include smoking, cooking, heating, use of incense, candles, and insecticides, while cleaning, housework, presence of pets and movement of people were the main sources of coarse particles. Outdoor air is a major PM2.5 source in rooms with natural ventilation in roadside households. Major sources of NO2 indoors are unvented gas heaters and cookers. Predictors of indoor NO2 are ventilation, season, and outdoor NO2 levels. VOCs are emitted from a wide range of indoor and outdoor sources, including smoking, solvent use, renovations, and household products. Formaldehyde levels are higher in newer houses and in the presence of new furniture, while PAH levels are higher in smoking households. High indoor particulate matter, NO2 and VOC levels were typically associated with respiratory symptoms, particularly asthma symptoms in children. (4) Conclusions: Household characteristics and occupant activities play a large role in indoor exposure, particularly cigarette smoking for PM2.5, gas appliances for NO2, and household products for VOCs and PAHs. Home location near high-traffic-density roads, redecoration, and small house size contribute to high indoor air pollution. In most studies, air exchange rates are negatively associated with indoor air pollution. These findings can inform interventions aiming to improve IAQ in residential properties in a variety of settings.

Abstract:The importance of building ventilation to protect health has been more widely recognized since the COVID-19 pandemic. Outdoor air ventilation in buildings dilutes indoor-generated air pollutants (including bioaerosols) and reduces resulting occupant exposures. Many countries and organizations have advisory guidelines or mandatory standards for minimum ventilation rates (VRs) to maintain indoor air quality (IAQ). Because directly measuring VRs is often difficult, many IAQ guidelines instead specify indoor concentration limits for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), using CO 2 exhaled by building occupants as an indicator of VR. Although indoor CO 2 guidelines are common, the evidence basis for the various CO 2 limits has not been clear.

Abstract:Various air pollutants harm human fitness, like particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), NO2, O3, CO, and fully volatile chemical-free compounds. In the last decade, international organizations have continuously worked to keep the Air Quality (AQ) guidelines and standards updated and refined to synchronize AQ modeling and management. The present AQ standards and guidelines have been provided by different agencies, including the California Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), the World Health Organization (WHO), and others. Various existing sensors for AQ management and analysis, their corresponding specifications, supply current, response time, data resolution, typical detection domain, measurement repeatability, or tolerance are issues of concern. These parameters are discussed to inspect present data research techniques focusing on indoor AQ. This study aims to provide a quick overview of AQ monitoring systems. These include portable, low-cost sensors and various international guidelines and standards for AQ management. Current trends and future scope are also presented after the discussion.

Abstract:People spend over 80% of their lives in indoor environments.The indoor air environment is very important to human health, comfort and working efficiency.In the past two decades, China has experienced very rapid urbanization and economic development.Building areas have developed very rapidly during this period, and the quality of life has continuously improved.However, there are serious problems of the indoor air environment: (1) Building energy consumption continues to increase, which aggravates ambient air pollution.(2) People in regions without central space heating systems desire indoor heating in winter to be thermally comfortable.In such regions, use of the same techniques and standards as in northern China is unacceptable, owing to energy supply and environmental capacity limitations.(3) Air pollutants of outdoor or indoor origin degrade indoor air quality, which is harmful to human health.Taking several typical problems of the indoor air environment as examples, the present paper analyzes causes of those problems and indicates certain unsolved scientific and technical issues underlying them.Based on the literature and some of our own considerations, we assert that new approaches to such problems are needed to develop a sustainable indoor air environment that has "healthy, thermally comfortable/acceptable, and energy-efficient" features.Suggestions for further discussion are presented.

Abstract:In this extended abstract, we introduce the new IEA EBC Annex on 'Energy Efficient IAQ Management in residential buildings'. In this Annex, we address a number of challenges in implementing smart IAQ management strategies. Annex 68 provided us with a general framework for integrated simulation and assessment of Energy Efficiency (EE) and chemical indoor air pollution. This framework can now be further extended to develop and assess a series of smart Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) management strategies. By mapping the existing work on the pollution sources in residential context, we develop a consistent set of metrics for assessing the performance of the various technologies in terms of energy efficiency, comfort and health for the occupants. This includes extending the framework developed in Annex 68 with specific metrics for energy efficiency and particulate matter, explicitly including moisture control and HVAC component modeling as well as creating a common methodology for IAQ data sharing among smart devices. By pooling and analyzing the data, the range of conditions in dwellings can be better understood and the most appropriate energy efficient IAQ management strategies can be identified. The application of the metrics over time also allows continuous commissioning and conveying the achieved performance to the occupants. In this Annex, we therefore optimize the energy efficiency of IAQ management by addressing these issues. For the IAQ management we mainly focus on the use of smart materials (materials that have an ability to actively influence IAQ situation in the space) and smart ventilation (as defined by AIVC VIP paper nr. 38), since these are the strategies that have a high EE potential (air cleaning is already studied in a separate Annex 78).

Abstract:Indoor air pollution is an international health concern because people spend a majority of their time indoors. Children are at a higher risk of health problems from pollutant exposure, especially because air in the child breathing zone is more polluted than it is in the adult breathing zone. Pollutants of concern include biological contaminants, combustion pollutants, volatile organic compounds, and radon and other soil gases. Humans have a history with lead and asbestos that goes back thousands of years to the ancient Romans and Egyptians. These two pollutants are still problems in older homes and apartments. All of these toxicants can be minimized or abated. Awareness of these issues is a critical first step in improving air quality in places where people live. These factors are of particular concern when examining indoor air quality because most people in the U.S. spend about 90% of their time indoors with some groups such as infants, the elderly, and infirm persons spending nearly all of their time indoors [1]. A number of conditions contribute to typically higher levels of indoor pollutants than corresponding levels outdoors [2]. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported that pollutant levels can be higher indoors than outdoors. By one estimate, pollutant levels can be 10 to 100 times higher inside than outside [3].

Abstract:Thermal comfort and indoor air quality (IAQ) of educational buildings can affect students’ academic performance and well-being and are closely related to ventilation energy consumption. Demands of the indoor environmental quality within the classroom generally vary with the education levels and result in ventilation energy consumption accounting for a considerable proportion of the total energy use in bulk educational buildings. Its huge energy-saving potential is attracting worldwide attention from scholars and governments. Therefore, appropriate operation strategies of ventilation systems should be adopted to effectively reduce energy consumption without sacrificing thermal comfort and IAQ. However, the absence of relevant standards and guidelines for designing a quality classroom environment considering the special features of educational buildings remains an important research question. This study conducts a comprehensive review to determine research gaps and identify future directions for the interaction between thermal comfort, IAQ and ventilation energy consumption for educational buildings. The review results show that: (1) The thermal comfort prediction model should consider the influences of genders, ages and socioeconomic backgrounds; (2) The mixed-mode ventilation coupling the natural and mechanical approaches is preferred given its advantage of lower energy consumption and improved thermal comfort, but its control strategies need further exploration; (3) Optimizing passive design parameters of buildings (e.g., window to wall ratios, window orientations and sun shading installations) can significantly reduce the ventilation demands while maintaining indoor thermal comfort; (4) More studies are required for investigating thermal comfort in educational buildings during the heating period; and (5) IAQ of university buildings clearly requires further studies, especially on bacterial and fungal aerosol pollutants, for a more comprehensive assessment of the built environment.

Abstract:The overall objective of the “Annex 68” Project, which belongs to the International Energy Agency’s “Energy in Buildings and Communities” Implementing Agreement, has been to develop the fundamental basis for optimal design and control strategies for good Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in highly energy efficient residential buildings, and to disseminate this information in a practically applicable guide. The strategies shall facilitate the possibility to design and operate residential buildings with minimal energy use, while ensuring impeccable indoor climates. The project completes its working phase by the end of spring 2019. The work has gathered laboratory and field data and developed new knowledge on pollution sources in buildings and how the transport mechanisms for the pollutants interact with heat, air and moisture conditions in materials and indoor zones. Furthermore, the project has assembled a set of contemporary models to simulate the combined heat, air, moisture and pollution conditions of buildings and their assemblies. The purpose has been to identify and describe amenable ways to optimize the provision of ventilation and air-conditioning. The paper gives an account of the project highlights.
Human Health and Productivity Outcomes Associated with Indoor Air Quality: a Systematic Review

Abstract:Characteristics of the indoor environmental quality directly impact humans’ ability to lead healthy and productive lives. We estimated the effects of changes in indoor air quality (namely through indoor ventilation rates and carbon dioxide levels) on health, performance, and productivity outcomes in students (primary, secondary, and university), laboratory test subjects, and workers. For this systematic review, we searched PubMed, from database inception to October 15, 2020, for relevant studies in any classroom, lab, and labor environment at any level of indoor air quality. No restrictions on language, workers’ health status, or study design were applied. Good and bad indoor air quality was defined using American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards. We excluded studies that calculated effects focusing on air temperature, humidity levels, systematic reviews on similar topics to avoid duplication, and any grey literature. Of 101 reports identified through our systematic search, 42 studies conducted in 10 countries and 3 continents, including 6,850 subjects were eligible for analysis. Our review showed that individuals exposed to indoor air quality settings above ASHRAE minimum standards (defined as ventilation rates 17 CFM per person and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) steady states of 1000 parts per million (ppm)) were more likely to experience increased poor levels of health, performance and productivity under these conditions. Overall, this analysis includes a variety of populations, exposures, and occupations to comply with a wider adoption of evidence synthesis but resulted in large heterogeneity. Poor indoor air quality has important human health, performance, and productivity outcomes and should be recognized as a public health problem. Inversely, improved indoor environmental conditions delivered through enhanced ventilation strategies should be considered a health, performance, and productivity opportunity for both students and workers. This study addresses these areas of concern and opportunity. However, given the lack of standardized methodologies, results reporting criteria across conducted air quality analyses, and a lack of international case studies, a concerted global effort is needed to conduct and compare research with standardized metrics. Furthermore, a majority of studies are conducted in school classrooms or laboratory environments or provide no remuneration to incentivize good performance - a condition not reflective of real-world office settings. To better understand the implication on office workers, additional field research can serve to enhance our understanding of indoor environmental factors on employee health and productivity in a setting where remuneration incentives may impact performance.

Abstract:Abstract Improving conditions and quality of life depends, among others, on the environment. People spend most of their time in a day inside buildings to work, sleep, eat, rest, and do sports and other activities. The article refers to a case study based on research on indoor environment within a furniture factory; the research is achieved via instruments for collecting diverse indoor parameters, such as temperature, CO 2 , PM (particulate matter) concentrations, noise, and humidity levels. All data recorded are needed to evaluate the conditions of the indoor climate in which the workers are activating. The measuring methods are shortly introduced and the IAQ (indoor air quality) index is expressed. The personnel activating in this factory is working intensely, standing up, and having to wear a mask considering the Covid-19 context. Thus, it is important to depict each aspect that might trigger a concern if IAQ limits are over passed, not mentioning the synergetic context of the diverse effects. Through revealing the IAQ, and the comfort/discomfort level PMV/PPD (predicted mean vote and predicted percentage dissatisfied) employees and company management can benefit from this awareness and enhance the behaviour in such a way that one might improve the indoor condition. The rapid and irreversible climate changes, mostly due to increasing pollution level and exhaust of greenhouse gases should push humanity to make more studies of this kind and, accordingly, realize the need of improvement and development of new solutions whereby one can sustain the indoor environment as proper as possible, in addition to the outdoor climate.

Abstract:Abstract Indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and guidelines for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been stipulated by various national and international agencies. The main purpose of this paper is to establish an overview of indoor VOCs regarding their impacts on human health. Herein, 13 VOCs were designated as indoor air pollutants (IAPs) in the IAQ standards and guidelines. They were further grouped into four types: nonchlorinated aromatic compounds, chlorinated aromatic compounds, chlorinated aliphatic compounds and aldehydes. For this purpose, the present study discusses the criteria for designating VOCs, and summarizes their main sources in indoor environments. Because the occupational exposure limit (OEL) in workplaces has often used as a preliminary basis for establishing acceptable health-based IAQ guidelines in buildings and residences, this paper thus reviews the OEL values, especially in the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)-threshold limit value (TLV). In addition, this paper also reviews the information about the classification of carcinogenicity in human by the international agencies for these VOCs. It shows that human tissues, including kidney, liver, leukemia, nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, liver and bile duct, could be more involved in the development of cancers or tumors when people are exposed to these VOCs through inhalation route in buildings over a long period of time.

Abstract:Air quality is a critical matter of concern in terms of the impact on public health and well-being. Although the consequences of poor air quality are more severe in developing countries, they also have a critical impact in developed countries. Healthcare costs due to air pollution reach $150 billion in the USA, whereas particulate matter causes 412,000 premature deaths in Europe, every year. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollutant levels can be up to 100 times higher in comparison to outdoor air quality. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is in the top five environmental risks to global health and well-being. The research community explored the scope of artificial intelligence (AI) in the past years to deal with this problem. The IAQ prediction systems contribute to smart environments where advanced sensing technologies can create healthy living conditions for building occupants. This paper reviews the applications and potential of AI for the prediction of IAQ to enhance building environment and public health. The results show that most of the studies analyzed incorporate neural networks-based models and the preferred evaluation metrics are RMSE, R 2 score and error rate. Furthermore, 66.6% of the studies include CO2 sensors for IAQ assessment. Temperature and humidity parameters are also included in 90.47% and 85.71% of the proposed methods, respectively. This study also presents some limitations of the current research activities associated with the evaluation of the impact of different pollutants based on different geographical conditions and living environments. Moreover, the use of reliable and calibrated sensor networks for real-time data collection is also a significant challenge.
