Abstract:Metal contamination and geochemistry of surface sediments were assessed at three aquaculture sites from the eastern Aegean coast. The chlorophyll degradation products and organic carbon levels were used as indicators of eutrophication status. In Akköy, higher Hg, Pb, and Cd levels were observed around the cages, while maximum concentrations of other elements were determined at stations situated near the Büyük Menderes River estuary. Metal concentrations were less than the central Aegean coast background levels other than Zn, Ni, and Cr in Akköy. Several approximations have been utilized to evaluate potential toxicity of sediments and sediment quality guidelines (SQG) were used to estimate the risks for aquatic life. Ni was the only metal with concentrations exceeding all SQG values, which indicates the highest adverse biological effect in Ildır, Akköy, and occasionally toxic in Güllük. Based on QPEL and QTEL, Ni and Cr were the predominant metal contaminants in all areas. Similarly, Cr and Ni account for the most of the all sediment toxicity in the aquaculture areas according to toxic risk index. It is concluded that sediments around the fish farms are affected by growing input of elements because of aquaculture activity. The levels of chlorophyll degradation products showed oligotrophic and mesotrophic conditions in the three studied aquaculture areas.

Abstract:This work is the first systematic quantitative analysis of the heavy metal situation along the Zhejiang coastal region focusing on the integrative assessment of the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cr, and As) in surface sediments during the 2012-2015 period. Different heavy metal contamination indices were used for surface sediment quality assessment purposes. The numerical results revealed a noticeable spatial fluctuation of the degree of contamination throughout the region during the four years considered. Higher contamination levels and ecological risks were detected in the southern part of the Zhejiang coastal region. It was found that the Cu, Cd and Hg were the predominant contaminants along the Zhejiang coast with mean regional concentrations varying between 29.1 and 34.2, 0.12-017, and 0.044-0.052 mg/kg, respectively. The Cr and Pb exhibited lower contamination levels than the other metals during each one of the years 2012-2015. Stochastic site indicators of heavy metal contamination were used to assess regional uncertainties and obtain useful physical interpretations of the state of contamination of the Zhejiang coast. These indicators can be expressed explicitly in terms of probabilities of heavy metal contamination (either at a global scale or spatially distributed over the coastal region), and therefore they can be considered as risk indicators. It was found that the fraction of the coastal region where excess contamination occurred could never exceed the ratio of the mean heavy metal contamination over the selected threshold. In half of the coast study region, the degree of heavy metal contamination was higher than the median spatial contamination values during the month of August of the years 2012-2015. The spatial means of excess contamination and excess differential contamination increased as the relative area of over-contamination increased. Within the substantially contaminated sub-region of the Zhejiang coast, stronger contamination correlations were observed between locations separated by shorter distances. These correlations were higher when smaller thresholds were considered. As regards the spatial connectivity of the corresponding contamination risks, it was found that 44%, 31%, 39% and 63% of the location pairs in the Zhejiang coast simultaneously experienced moderate risks during the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The ratio of the probability of excess contamination at both locations separated by distances < 20 km over the probability of excess contamination at either one of these two locations was high even for large thresholds, indicating that locations with high contamination are concentrated rather than being dispersed along the Zhejiang coast. Lastly, another interesting finding is that the characterization of the Zhejiang coastal region as over-contaminated is very sensitive to the DC threshold considered, that is, a small increase in the threshold selected can reduce significantly the probability that region is characterized as over-contaminated.

Abstract:Eighteen patients with severe low-back pain of long duration were externally stabilized over selected segments of the lumbar spine to evaluate the pain relieving effect of increased stability. Five millimeter Schantz screws were driven into the vertebral body transpeduncularly by a closed technique using an image intensifier. A modified Hoffmann fixation device with possibilities to compress and distract was used for external stabilization. The results were recorded by means of pain area sketches and pain lines. All but one patient experienced remarkable relief of low-back pain and often of pain radiating into the lower extremities. No serious complications were seen. Of eight patients with residual severe pain after fusions, five were considered healed using radiologic techniques and three were improved by external stabilization. This test could be used to identify candidates, select levels for lumbar fusion, and evaluate the stability of previous fusions.
Heavy metal pollution assessment in sediments of the Izmit Bay, Turkey

Abstract:Surface sediments in the fraction < 63 microm collected from eight stations along the north coastline of Izmit Bay, north-eastern Marmara Sea, Turkey, were analyzed for major (organic carbon, Al, Ba, Fe and Mg) and trace (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn) elements by using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Sediments heavily contaminated are evaluated by the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQG) of US EPA. The results were compared with the marine sediment quality standards (SQS), as well as literature values reported to assess the pollution status of the sediments. The enrichment factors (EFs) were calculated to evaluate actual level of contamination for all the elements using the earth crust as reference matrix, based on elemental values by Mason which show a normal pattern near to unity. The analysis revealed two groups of elements: (i) Arsenic, Cd, Pb, and Zn are the most enriched elements; (ii) Barium, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mo and Ni are at background levels. The results show that road traffic run-offs, paint industries and coal combustion are among the most significant sources.
Integrated Spatial Distribution and Multivariate Statistical Analysis for Assessment of Ecotoxicological and Health Risks of Sediment Metal Contamination, Ömerli Dam (Istanbul, Turkey)

Abstract:The accumulation, distribution, and contamination status of metals in the Ömerli Dam sediments were investigated using ecotoxicological and human health indexes in this study. Identifying potential sources of waste metals in the sediments and assessing ecological risks, principal component analysis (PCA)/factor analysis (FA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I geo ), contamination factor (CF), potential load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (Er i ), modified hazard classification methods such as quotient ( m HQ), toxic units (TUs), toxic risk index (TRI), integrated pollution index (IPI) methods are used. Potential health risks of toxic metals in sediment were designated by modified hazard quotient ( m HQ), hazard index (HI), and total lifetime cancer risk (LCR) models. Besides, heavy metal concentrations and calculated index values were evaluated with spatial distribution maps using the IDW technique with GIS software. The average of metal concentrations was put in order as follows: (mg/kg) Al (74,290.39) > Fe (37,767.10) > Mn (484.20) > Zn (180.81) > Cr (117.26) > V (108.17) > Pb (94.76) > Ni (63.67) > Cu (53.11) > Co (15.65) > As (15.04) > Sb (1.86) > Cd (1.76) > Hg (1.30). Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Hg, and Pb average values are higher than the earth's crust's average values. According to EFs which is an indicator of anthropogenic inputs, EF Cd (7.34) and EF Pb (5.92) showed moderate–severe enrichment, and EF Hg (4.08) was moderate enrichment. PCA/FA and CA revealed that heavy metal contamination is affected by more than one source of pollution. HQ and HI values for each metal are less than 1 for children and adults. LCR values of Cd, Cr, Pb, and As are lower than the target risk level (1.00E-04). According to this study, more attention should be paid to the comprehensive risk assessment of metals in the sediment ecosystem for both aquatic biota and residents in the vicinity of the Ömerli Dam.

Abstract:Sediments are periodically dredged from the major ports in the Gulf of Gabes (GG) during maintenance operations. These sediments are dumped near the coats of Sfax and Gabes cities. In the present study, 6 trace metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were assessed in both sediments and column water taken from the different basins of Sfax port. This study is the first to focus on the microbial and microalgae contaminations of Sfax port sediments. The spatial distributions of trace metals in dredged sediments from the different basins of Sfax port show that the maximum concentrations of Cd (13.75 μg/g), Cu (892.5 μg/g), and Zn (1447 μg/g) exceeded the Geode standard thresholds. The same elements, also detected in the water column, exceeded the toxicity thresholds for phytoplankton, shellfish, and algae (Cd 0.095 μg/l, Cu 4.52 μg/l, and Zn 37 μg/l). The presence of coliforms, indicators of sewage pollution, as pathogenic germs ( Pseudomonas ), was shown through microbiological examinations of the sediments and water column. The microalgae enumeration showed the abundance of dinoflagellate cysts (stressed form) which attests to the presence of severe conditions in Sfax port. Different toxic species were identified as Prorocentrum lima and Alexandrium minutum. The same trace metal sources and abundance in Sfax port and GG sediments suggest the hypothesis of their transfer from their disposal sites in coastal areas to deeper depths in the GG and until Boughrara lagoon (BL). As trace metals, microalgae species were also transferred by hydrodynamic currents inside the GG where they found suitable conditions to their proliferation causing the seawater coloration phenomenon, eutrophication, and degradation of the aquatic system.

Abstract:This study was carried out to determine metal levels accumulated in the sediments collected from the transitional and coastal waters of the southern Black Sea. Samples were taken from 32 stations in May and September 2018. The concentrations of elements were measured by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometer (ICP-MS). Enrichment Factor (EF), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Contamination Factor (C f ), and Modified Degree of Contamination (mC d ) were applied to the data for assessing the sediment quality. Associations between the variables were also revealed by factor analysis. Igeo of metals are obtained in coastal sediments only when Hg in May and Cr in September are classified as moderately polluted. PLIs exceeded one at stations in the industrial zone, indicating getting worse. It is necessary to prevent pollution from industrial, domestic, and agricultural sources and to control agricultural lands.

Abstract:A detailed study was conducted in order to evaluate the effects of heavy metal pollution in the sediments in terms of environmental, ecological, and human health. Sediment samples were collected from 5 different points in two seasons, namely summer (August 2017) and winter (December 2017), to determine the distribution of heavy metals, potential pollutants, and toxic and ecological risks in the river sediments in Samsun-Tekkeköy district located in the Mid-Black Sea Region of Turkey and to evaluate the human health risk. The distribution of heavy metals at the sampling points was Fe>Al>Mn>Zn>Cu>Cr>Ni>Pb>Cd based on their averages. According to the toxic risk index (TRI) results, sampling point OIZ (Organized Industrial Zone) Channel (T3) was also found to have a moderate risk, and it was determined that the highest contribution was from Cu>Ni>Cd>Cr, respectively. Potential ecological risk index (PERI) results revealed a low risk except for Cd metal at all sampling points. While the sediment enrichment factor (EF) did not show much metallization at many points, the highest enrichment was observed in Cd, Cu, and Zn metals at sampling point T3. According to the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF), sampling point T3 showed contamination with Cd, Cu, Cr, and Zn. Evaluation of human health risk showed that the hazard index (HI) results of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were higher among children than adults. The total lifetime cancer risks (TLCR) of heavy metals were within the limits determined by USEPA. However, the risk was ranked as Cr>Cd>Pb. Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and pollution index results showed that heavy metal contamination was due to anthropogenic and industrial activities since the region was an industrial zone. It was determined that heavy metals posed ecological risks and that the Samsun-Tekkeköy region was moderately and significantly contaminated.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) pollution of river sediments is one of the most important problems encountered in the aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to determine potential HM contamination in the sediments of Çömlekci stream and to assess the environmental risks associated with this contamination. To achieve these objectives, sediment samples were collected seasonally at three different stations, dried at 103 ˚C for 24 h, sieved to <63 μm, and analyzed for HMs with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average concentrations (mg/kg) in the sediments were as follows: Iron (Fe) 8597 ± 1726 > manganese (Mn) 297.7 ± 48.42 > zinc (Zn) 60.09 ± 46.52 > copper (Cu) 35.26 ± 23.33 > lead (Pb) 19.91 ± 11.01 > chrome (Cr) 7.89 ± 2.78 > nickel (Ni) 7.01 ± 3.33 > cobalt (Co) 5.77 ± 1.32 > cadmium (Cd) 0.11 ± 0.17. To determine the origins and the relationships of HMs, statistical methods such as Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were used. In addition, potential ecological risks and toxicity to human health were determined by performing calculations of the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), hazard index (HI), hazard quotient (HQ) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR) and comparing data to sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). The average enrichment factors (EFs) of Fe, Ni and Cr were less than 1.5, which indicates that they come from natural sources, while the other metals were consistently higher (EF > 1.5), which implies an anthropogenic influence. According to I geo results, there is limited contamination of sediments by Cu, Pb and Zn. Average value of SQGs showed that there is no environmental risk for aquatic biota. Data of HI, HQ, and LCR indicate that HMs do not pose carcinogenic risks or non-carcinogenic hazards to human health.

Abstract:The contents of heavy metals in the core sediments of Erdek and Bandırma Bays were investigated to determine the pollution level, metal distribution and the associated human risks. It is very important to assess the concentration level of metal pollutants and health risk to adults and children. Therefore, metal analysis, contamination degree (C deg ), modified contamination degree (mC deg ), toxic unit (TU), toxic risk index (TRI), modified hazard quotient (mHQ), and human risk assessment were carried out. The measured metals in the sediments were in the range of Al: 0.71-6.5%, Fe: 0.73-6.7%, Mn:100-923 mg/kg, As: 0.5-28 mg/kg, Co: 0.1-21 mg/kg, Cr: 31-595 mg/kg, Cu: 0.1-58 mg/kg, Ni: 11-196 mg/kg, Pb: 3-72 mg/kg, V: 19-159 mg/kg, Zn: 6-255 mg/kg, Hg: 0.03-1 mg/kg. Based on the I geo , the mean values were < 0, except for Hg in cores MD72 (0.1), BD1 (0.9), and ER1 (0.2), which means that both bays are "unpolluted to moderately contaminated" with Hg. The mean mC deg values of Erdek and Bandırma Bays sediments were very low contaminated with selected metals. The mean values of ΣTUs values for the cores (BK1, MD72, BD1 and ER1) ranged from 2.8-1.0, 4.9-0.5, 5.8-0.5, and 2.9-0.7, respectively. The mHQ-Hg and -Ni values indicated moderate to considerable significant contamination to living organisms, while it was for -Zn, -Cu, and –Pb indicated low to very low contamination to living organisms. There was no toxic risk to the marine ecosystem according to the TRI value (<5). Based on the human risk assessment using to the Hazard Quotient (HQ) that recommended by the US EPA, there are no adverse health effects by ingestion and dermal contact. Moreover, there are no non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic harm to adults and children. The results of this study will serve as a preliminary baseline human health risk assessment for Bandırma and Erdek Bays.

Appraisal of metallic accumulation in the surface sediment of a fish breeding dam in Türkiye: A stochastical approach to ecotoxicological risk assessment

Abstract:This study examines the levels and patterns of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in surface sediment of Almus Dam Lake (ADL), a key fish breeding site in Türkiye. PTE concentrations in sediment were ranked: Hg (0.05 ± 0.01) < Cd (0.16 ± 0.01) < Pb (9.34 ± 1.42) < As (18.75 ± 15.65) < Cu (63.30 ± 15.17) < Ni (72.64 ± 20.54) < Zn (86.66 ± 11.95) < Cr (108.35 ± 36.40) < Mn (1008 ± 151) < Fe (53,998 ± 6468), with no significant seasonal or spatial differences. Ecological risk indices (mHQ, EF, Igeo, CF, PLI, Eri, mCd, NPI, PERI, MPI, and TRI) showed low contamination levels. Health risk assessments, including LCR, HQ, and THI, indicated minimal risks to humans from sediment PTEs. Statistical analyses (PCA, HCA, SCC) identified natural, transportation, and anthropogenic PTE sources, with slight impacts from agriculture and fish farming. This research underlines contamination status of ADL and emphasizes the need for targeted management strategies, offering critical insights for environmental safeguarding.
Positive matrix factorization receptor model and dynamics in fingerprinting of potentially toxic metals in coastal ecosystem sediments at a large scale (Persian Gulf, Iran)

Abstract:Effective pollution control and remediation strategies are the key to providing a major progress in conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity. For the development of such strategies, quantitative assessment of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) and the accurate identification of the pollutant sources are essential. In this study, we seek to find out spatial PTMs distribution in the coastal sediments of the Persian Gulf (Iran), to assess the potential eco-environmental risks and to identify the metal pollution sources. Total and fraction analysis indicated considerable metal (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Al, Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Co, Ni and V) pollution levels, albeit in most cases PTMs were predominantly associated with the oxidizable and residual fractions. The obtained PTMs concentrations were in the range of 22.8 - 156.3, 16.6 - 161.9; 2.7 - 88; 10.4 - 107.3; 1.1 - 35.8; 0.8 - 27.9; 0.1 - 1.3; 1.1 - 21.3; 0.04 - 1.9 mg.kg-1 for V, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Co, Hg, Pb, and Cd, respectively. The combined PTM-PCA-PMF modeling approach identified four main metal sources (anthropogenic, vehicle-related, agricultural and lithogenic) in the study area. Several recognizable 'hot-spots' with extremely high metal concentrations were observed in the spatial metal pollution patterns. Some of those locations were predominantly affected by the nearby industrial activities, while others have demonstrated contributions from several sources - not only anthropogenic, but also agricultural and vehicle-related. The same spots of elevated pollution were found to demonstrate higher potential eco-environmental risk. Various indexes indicated more or less similar trends: the eco-environmental risk was gradually increasing towards the northwestern part of the study area with several peaks in the central and eastern parts directly affected by the nearby industrial activities.
Heavy metal contamination of topsoil in Denizli Organized Industrial Zone, Western Anatolia, Turkey

Abstract:This paper deals with determination of the environmental pollution in Denizli Organized Industrial Zone and its surroundings. Denizli is one of the biggest industrial cities of Turkey hosting several factories with immense production, regularly shipped by a vast haulage system. The study area is traversed by one of the most crowded highways in the country, ensuring the transportation between Western and Central Anatolia. It is also traversed by a railroad connecting Denizli city to Izmir city located on the Aegean Sea coast. Therefore, covering an area of about 30 km2, 154 samples were collected to be subject of the magnetic susceptibility measurements end up at highlighting contaminated zones in the study area. The spatial distribution maps plotted for both magnetic susceptibility measurements acquired at high (χHF) and low (χLF) frequencies showed coherent anomalies following the direction of the roads (east-west). According to the magnetic susceptibility measurements, 40 initial samples were chosen to be chemically analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The soil nature was determined by examining 10 supplementary samples collected from the study area. Concentrations of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) and magnetic parameters were statistically analysed for the best understanding of the correlation of the heavy metal pollution and magnetic susceptibility values. The environmental status of the study area was evaluated by the aid of elaboration and interpretation of the contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), and the pollution load index (PLI) which allowed the comparison between the different polluted parts of the study area. The results obtained as maximum values from the calculation of the contamination factor were found as follows: Cr (31.12), Ni (12.88), Fe (11.42), Cu (11.20), Zn (4.71), and Pb (2.87). The maximum values obtained for the implemented geoaccumulation index were found for each element as follow: Cr (4.37), Ni (3.1), Fe (2.93), Cu (2.9), Zn (1.65), and Pb (0.9), while the enrichment factor's results were found as follow: Fe (2.93), Cr (4.37), Ni (3.10), Zn (1.65), Cu (2.90), and Pb (0.93). Results showed that the Tomlinson pollution load index (PLI) calculated for the six elements is reflecting a heavy pollution of the study area by reaching the value of 6.41 as a mean of the total analysis results and 11 as a maximum value. The magnetic susceptibility and heavy metals distribution showed similar anomaly locations especially out of the area of Denizli organized industrial zone which seems to be less contaminated giving a sign of the liberation of industrial wastes into the surrounding areas. The farming lands were also found to be acting in the enrichment of the heavy metal content in the study area soils. The main anomalies introduce the contamination of the lower zones of the study area which is the result of the transportation of anthropogenic pollutants by wind and stream. Riparian Soil Pollution Caused by Sediment Metal Transport: Seasonal Changes and Ecological Risk Assessment

Abstract:The accumulation of pollutants in the sediment along surface water may negatively affect riparian zones and increase ecological risk. This article investigates the effects of metal sediments on riparian soil via field monitoring and ICP-OES analysis. To this end, pollution levels, seasonal changes, and potential sources of the pollutants were determined for the Melen River watershed, Turkey. The ecological statuses (contamination factor, enrichment factor, index of geo-accumulation, pollution index, modified pollution index, and potential and modified ecological risk indexes) of the watershed were also analyzed. Although no significant seasonal differences in the metal sediments were observed, their spatial distribution in the sediments and riparian soils varied markedly. Cr (11.4 to 136), Co (7.7 to 21.52), Cu (11.4 to 76.6), and Ni (14.06 to 128.2) recorded as mg/kg significantly increased from the upstream to the downstream. The metals possessing the highest risk in the sediment and riparian soil regarding the river health were Cu, Co, and Ni. The risk values were found to be heavily polluted (PI > 3 and MPI > 10), and the risk indexes were above the "desired environment without the risk". The risk index was found to be more than 50, and the modified risk indexes exceeded 200 at many points. The transportation of pollutants in surface water became evident in the sediment, resulting in adverse effects on the riparian zone and the ecological system.

Abstract:In aquatic ecosystem, metal pollution is an important environmental hazard. Mussels as a bioindicator species are often used for assessment the presence of potentially toxic metals. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the effect of seasonal variations on some heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, As, Zn and Cu) accumulation in water and Dreissena polymorpha from lake habitat. Our result indicated that Zn accumulated at a very high level in the zebra mussels while As accumulated at a high level in water samples. Seasonal variations significantly affected Cu concentration in the water samples (P < 0.05) while Cr concentration in the mussel samples was significantly affected by seasonal variations (P < 0.05). According to the water analysis, mean concentrations of metals are below the maximum limits established by the World Health Organization and USEPA, except As. Overall, our data emphasize anthropogenic pollution in the Turkish aquatic environment and confirm the use of D. polymorpha as a prospective biomonitor for metal polluted sites'.

Abstract:In the present study, the spatial‐temporal variations of iron, lead, copper, cadmium, mercury, nickel, and zinc accumulations in the water of Şehriban Stream (northern Turkey) were investigated. Water Quality Index (WQI), Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI), Pearson Correlation Index (PCI), and Factor Analysis (FA) were used in analyzing the water quality. Sampling was performed in 12 stations on monthly basis between February 2019 and January 2020 (a hydrological year). The data showed that the Şehriban Stream had significantly high water quality characteristics and the investigated toxicants were not found as dangerous for health. Although there was a slight decrease in the water quality from upstream to downstream, the stream was found to have 1st class water quality in general. As a result of WQI and HEI, although it was determined that the water quality decreased slightly in autumn, the stream was found to be "A Grade – Excellent (<50)" and "Low Contamination (<10)", respectively. As a result of PCI, strong positive correlations were found between almost all the toxicants investigated here (p <0.01). As a result of FA, 2 factors ( "Agriculture – Forestry" and "Rock Structure") explained 86% of the total variance.

Abstract:The geochemical distribution of several trace metals (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), chrome (Cr), cobalt (Co) and iron (Fe)) was investigated using five sequential extraction procedures to provide information on their distribution and environmental impacts on the Iraqi coastal sediments. Sediment samples were collected from 16 sites along the coast to determine the concentrations of the above metals. The concentration and ratios of these metals were estimated in the sediment extract (concentration on the exchange surfaces, carbonates, manganese oxides and iron oxides, organic matter and those associated with the remainder) using extraction methods (magnesium chloride, 1 molar of sodium acetate, 0.5 molar of hydroxylamine hydrochloride, 0.2 molar of ammonium oxalate, concentrated nitric acid and 25% of hydrofluoric acid) to extract and separate the above fractions in order. The results indicated that the total sediment content of Pb and Cd were higher than their rate of occurrence in the crust, while copper, zinc, nickel, chrome, cobalt and iron were within those limits. According to the I-geo the metals Cr, Cu and Zn are considered at unpolluted class while Ni and Pb were ranged from moderately to strongly level. On the other had Cd was found at extremely level as its I-geo exceeded the highest-class value. These metals are bonded to different power bonds. Pb, Cr and Co have dominant in exchangeable and carbonates fraction. Iraqi tidal flats is characterized by very high risk considering Cr, Pb, Co and Cu which represented by RAC values, so they can move to the solution to become available for living.

Abstract:Surface sediments from the intertidal area of Côte d'Ivoire were sampled to investigate trace metals (Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As) concentrations to illustrate their spatial distribution and ecological risk of pollution. The average total organic carbon content was 2.04 ± 0.01%. Except for Cr and Zn, the spatial distribution exhibited a similar pattern for TOC, Hg, Cd, Cu, Pb, and As. The average concentrations of trace metals were less than their corresponding upper continental crust (UCC) values, except for Cd and Cr. The pollution indices indicated that sediment quality in the studied area has been impacted by Cd and the Assinie and Bleron sites were the most contaminated. A few ecological risks were posed by Hg, Cd, Cr, and Cu, based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). The Pearson correlation showed a significant ( p < 0.05 ) correlation between As, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Hg, suggesting a common origin in sediments. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified As, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Hg might originate from natural source, Cd and Cu might be from natural and anthrogenic sources. Although this study presents the current status of littoral trace metals contamination level in sediments, further studies should integrate the statistical multivariate approach to determine the anthropogenic sources of the trace metals in the intertidal area of Côte d'Ivoire.

Abstract:In this study, we examined for the first time the spatio-temporal distribution of trace metal (TM) contaminants (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Co) in the seawater column of Pula Bay. The bay has been known for decades as one of the most industrialized regions on the Croatian side of the Adriatic. Water samples were collected at 20 sites (at two depths) in four different seasons. The main physico-chemical parameters and DOC were measured along the TMs. The spatial distribution clearly showed that areas with industrial and nautical activities are sources of Zn, Pb and Cu, while no increase was observed for Cd, Ni and Co. Compared to the reference area outside the bay, the increase in dissolved concentrations ranged from a factor of 1.1 for Ni and Co to 8.5 for Pb. A clear difference in TM concentrations was observed between seasons, with concentrations being higher in warmer periods than in colder periods. The potential bioavailability/toxicity of TMs was examined using a passive sampling technique: diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). In addition, a single-factor pollution index based on the available EQSs was used for both the dissolved TMs and DGT to assess the potential risk to the environment.

Abstract:In this study, geochemical properties were investigated to constrain the provenance, weathering conditions and to evaluate distribution and potential sources of heavy metals in the surface soils from basin infill sediments in Elazığ Industrial Area, Eastern Turkey. Soil samples contain clay minerals (smectite, chlorite and illite), feldspar, quartz, calcite and dolomite. Geochemical patterns of major, trace and rare earth elements in soil samples generally are consistent with those of host rocks. Ba, Cs, Rb, Th, Zr and U contents are less than amounts of Post Archean Australian Shale composition, may reveal that source rocks of soils in the study area are of mafic composition. The Eu/Eu*, Th/Sc, Zr/Sc ratios show that source rocks of the most of the studied soil samples are of basic source except samples from the waste area. Chemical index of alteration (CIA) indices observed in the samples suggest that their source rocks were low to moderately weathered. The levels of metals in soil collected from all the sampling sites was found to decreased in the order of: Mn > Zn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Co > Pb > Mo > Cd. Enrichment factors, coefficients of variation, correlation analysis and principal component analysis were determined that sources of elements in soils are classified into two general categories; they are either lithogenic (natural) or anthropogenic (human made). It is found that source of Mn, Cr, Mo, Cd are anthropogenic, whilst source of Cu and Co are entirely and Pb, Zn, Ni are predominately lithogenic and, they are affected by geochemical character of the source rocks.
