Abstract:Water recycling is a convenient way to get around the water shortage and wastewater analysis. The water can be reused for domestic purposes by eliminating organic pollutants through a photocatalytic process. For this aim, the sol-gel dip coating process synthesized ZrO2 nanostructured thin films with tunable structural, morphological, and optical properties and photocatalytic activities. Zr sources (acetate, nitrate, and chloride), annealing temperature (T A ), and thickness (d)-dependent structural, morphological, optical, and photocatalytic performances of the ZrO 2 films were scrutinized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), mapping technique, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The XRD, SEM, EDS, and mapping analyses confirmed the formation of nanostructured ZrO 2 thin film. The results revealed that ZrO 2 film had a tetragonal phase with various crystallite sizes and different surface morphologies as the Zr sources, T A , and d varied. There were significant variations in the optical absorbance, band gap, refractive index, and absorption coefficient based on Zr sources, TA, and d. Among all ZrO 2 films, the film sample synthesized by the Zr-acetate source annealed at T A of 500 °C and with d of 940 nm was found to be the most effective film in terms of optical and crystalline quality as well as photocatalytic performance (94% efficiency in 150 min) for the degradation of methylene blue dye. The enhanced light utilization capability suppressed charge recombination, surface morphology, grain size, defect concentration, and optical band gap values of the nanostructured zirconia thin films are the key factors corresponding to enhanced photocatalytic performance.

High UV and Sunlight Photocatalytic Performance of Porous ZnO Nanostructures Synthesized by a Facile and Fast Microwave Hydrothermal Method

Abstract:The degradation of organic pollutants in wastewaters assisted by oxide semiconductor nanostructures has been the focus of many research groups over the last decades, along with the synthesis of these nanomaterials by simple, eco-friendly, fast, and cost-effective processes. In this work, porous zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a microwave hydrothermal process. A layered zinc hydroxide carbonate (LZHC) precursor was obtained after 15 min of synthesis and submitted to different calcination temperatures to convert it into porous ZnO nanostructures. The influence of the calcination temperature (300, 500, and 700 °C) on the morphological, structural, and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructureswas investigated. All ZnO samples were tested as photocatalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under UV irradiation and natural sunlight. All samples showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under both light sources, with RhB being practically degraded within 60 min in both situations. The porous ZnO obtained at 700 °C showed the greatest photocatalytic activity due to its high crystallinity, with a degradation rate of 0.091 and 0.084 min−1 for UV light and sunlight, respectively. These results are a very important step towards the use of oxide semiconductors in the degradation of water pollutants mediated by natural sunlight.

Abstract:Degradation of organic dyes and their byproducts by heterogeneous photocatalysts is an essential process, as these dyes can be potentially discharged in wastewater and threaten aquatic and xerophyte life. Therefore, their complete mineralization into nontoxic components (water and salt) is necessary through the process of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, Zr/CrO2 (Zirconium-doped chromium IV oxide) nanocomposite-based photocatalysts with different compositions (1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 wt.%) were prepared by an environmentally friendly, solid-state reaction at room temperature. The as-prepared samples were calcined under air at 450 °C in a furnace for a specific period of time. The synthesis of Zr/CrO2 photocatalysts was confirmed by various techniques, including XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and BET. The photocatalytic properties of all samples were tested towards the degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange organic dyes under UV light. The results revealed a concentration-dependent photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts, which increased the amount of dopant (up to 5 wt.%). However, the degradation efficiency of the catalysts decreased upon further increasing the amount of dopant due to the recombination of holes and photoexcited electrons.

Abstract:Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has been deemed as an excellent material for photocatalytic processes due to its high photosensitivity, suitable bandgap and low cost. This paper aims to optimize the synthesis process of ZnO nanoparticles via co-precipitation for the enhanced photodegradation of Methyl Orange (MO) textile. Two sets of experiments were conducted; each with different metal hydroxides (NaOH and KOH) used for the synthesis process. For each set, three factors were investigated: temperature, mixing time, and molar ratio of zinc salt to hydroxide salt. Response surface methodology (RSM) using centered central composite design (CCD) was employed to model and optimize the synthesis process with respect to the aforementioned factors. The success of the nanoparticles synthesis was confirmed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). A hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure of as-synthesized ZnO NPs was observed with crystalline size of 24.2 nm. For 20-min UV illumination time, the optimization results revealed maximum degradation efficiency of 32.48% and 32.44% using NaOH and KOH, respectively. The optimum operating conditions for NaOH-based experiments were: temperature of 70 °C, 2.5 h of mixing time, and molar ratio of 1:8.5; while those for the KOH-based experiments were temperature of 60 °C, 1.5 h of mixing time, and molar ratio of 1:6. At optimum condition, these nanoparticles successfully achieved 94.82% degradation in 120 min. The reaction kinetics well fitted pseudo first-order model with a rate constant of 0.0227 min−1 and correlation value R2 of 0.9031.

Abstract:In this study, mixed phase (tetragonal and monoclinic) Zirconia nanoparticles (ZrO 2 NPs) namely, ZS3, ZS7 and ZS10 were synthesized via hydrothermal method at different pH values of (3, 7, 10) respectively. A combination of Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) characterization techniques confirmed the formation of mixed phase ZrO 2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic behavior of synthesized ZrO 2 NPs was examined for the degradation of anionic Congo Red (CR) Dye under visible light irradiation. A systematic study of the efficiency of the prepared ZS3, ZS7 and ZS10 nanoparticles was compared and it was found that ZS7 outperformed the ZS3 and ZS10 materials, having removal efficiency of up to 98.9% with 0.1 g of the prepared ZS7 nanoparticles for 75 ppm of Congo Red (CR) dye. Furthermore, the surface area analysis revealed that among the prepared materials, ZS7 exhibited the highest surface area, thereby corroborating the finding of its superior catalytic efficiency. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the degradation of dye followed first-order kinetics. ZS7 showed the highest removal efficiency in just 60 min of contact time for all the CR dye concentrations ranging from 50 to 100 ppm, making it a superior catalyst for the efficient removal of the targeted Congo Red dye.

Abstract:As one of huge-gap semiconductors, zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) has been emerging as one of popular photocatalysts for treating wastewater, and the band gap engineering of ZrO 2 for efficient visible-light harvesting and high-performance photocatalysis is probably the most important challenge. In this work, porous Zn doped Zr 3+ -ZrO 2 nanostructures with strong visible-light harvesting capacity were fabricated via a calcination process for tetracycline degradation. The obtained (Zn, Zr 3+ )-ZrO 2 samples showed greatly narrowed band gaps and enhanced visible-light harvesting capacity. In addition, the photocatalytic performance of the (Zn, Zr 3+ )-ZrO 2 nanostructures was studied with tetracycline degradation as a model reaction. Among these prepared samples, the optimal (Zn, Zr 3+ )-ZrO 2 -5% sample exhibited remarkably improved tetracycline degradation visible-light irradiation, and the apparent rate constant reached 0.04958 min −1 , which was 7.05 times of pristine Zr 3+ -ZrO 2 . The boosted photocatalytic performance of the (Zn, Zr 3+ )-ZrO 2 nanostructures were mainly ascribed to Zn doping effects as along as the high surface areas. Finally, possible photocatalytic mechanism, degradation pathways, and toxicity assessment were also studied. Current results indicate the significant roles of Zn doping in regulation of band gaps and morphology control of ZrO 2 for high-performance photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:To solve the problem of liquid-phase synthesis of nano-ZnO, a photocatalytic performance study was proposed. In this study, the microwave homogeneous precipitation method was used to add different types and amounts of surfactants. The synthesis of nano-zinc oxide was controlled by changing the reaction system conditions. The photocatalytic properties of nano-zinc oxide for degrading three water-soluble dyes were preliminarily studied and discussed. The results show that the photocatalytic performance of nano-ZnO is closely related to its size, morphology, specific surface area, and even crystallographic direction.

Abstract:In this study, we have investigated the effects of EDTA, citric acid, and urea on the morphology-controlled synthesis of ZnO nanostructures by a hydrothermal method. XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, BET, and UV-DRS studies revealed that the addition of different complexing agents not only controls the size and morphology but also alters the crystallinity, particle size, energy bandgap, specific surface area, and pore characteristics of ZnO. We achieved diverse morphologies, including spherical nanoparticles (80–100 nm), nanorods (1 μm length, 100 nm diameter), and nanoflakes (100–200 nm lateral dimension with 10–20 nm thickness) utilizing citric acid, urea, and EDTA as morphology controllers. The resulting nanoparticles had surface areas of 11.8 m 2 /g, 29.6 m 2 /g, and 4.6 m 2 /g, respectively. ZnO nanostructures developed with citric acid, urea, and EDTA were found to have a band gap of 3.273 eV, 3.209 eV, and 3.380 eV, respectively. The photodegradation efficiency of ZnO spherical nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoflakes was found to be 90%, 97%, and 81%, respectively, demonstrating the shape-dependent photodegradation of MB dye. The prepared ZnO photocatalyst exhibits pseudo-first-order kinetics with good recyclability (five cycles) and stability. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanorods was attributed to their morphology, which facilitates efficient charge separation and increased surface area, leading to more active sites for pollutant degradation. This study offers a potential approach for developing morphology-driven photocatalysts for environmental remediation and water purification.

Abstract:The development of nanotechnology has significantly impacted the improvement of photocatalytic performance of ZnO NPs. In this study synthesis of pure ZnO and Ag-ZnO nanoparticles via a co-precipitation method at varying Ag concentrations (1 %, 2 %, 3 %, 4 % and 6 %) to enhance their photo catalytic efficacy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis estimates crystallite size which decreased by increasing Ag concentration, ranging from 30.6 nm (Pure ZnO) to 22.5 nm 6 % Ag-doped ZnO. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed decrease in particle size with increasing Ag content. UV-Vis spectroscopy indicating a narrowed band gap of optimal sample. Photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated using methylene orange (MO) dye degradation under light irradiation. The MO concentration exhibited a decrease with increasing irradiation time in the presence of photocatalysts. Recombination rate of NPs decreases by increasing the concentration of Ag i.e. 4%Ag dope ZnO NPs have lowest recombination rate and maximum degradation efficiency. FTIR analysis confirms the preparation of Ag-doped ZnO NPs. This improvement can be credited to the synergistic effect of Ag doping, leading to a narrowed band gap and potentially maximum degradation of MO by using Ag-doped ZnO NPs.
Efficient Fabrication of ZrO2-doped TiO2 Hollow Nanospheres with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Rhodamine B Degradation.

Abstract:ZrO2-doped TiO2 hollow nanospheres with anatase phase are efficiently fabricated via functionalized negatively charged polystyrene (PS) spheres without any surfactant or polyelectrolyte. The resulting Ti1−xZrxO2 (hereafter denoted as TZ) hollow nanospheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), nitrogen sorption, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis). The Zr4+ incorporation decreases the anatase crystallite size, increases the specific surface area, and changes the pore size distribution. Furthermore, it induces enrichment of electron charge density around Ti4+ ions and blueshift of absorption edges. The TZ hollow nanospheres doped with moderate ZrO2 (molar ratio, Ti:Zr=10:1) exhibit better photocatalytic activity than the other samples for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution, which is correlated with the effect of Zr4+ doping on the physicochemical properties in terms of surface structures, phase structures, and the electronic structures.
Facile and green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles for effective photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and real textile wastewater

Abstract:Remediation of organic dyes from wastewater in textile industries is a big challenge to decreasing water pollution. This study was aimed at the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and their application as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), sunfix red (SR) and real textile wastewater (RTW) under both UV and visible irradiations. The ZnO NPs were synthesized with a green Thymus vulgaris leaf extract-supported approach following the calcination process. 50 mg L-1 MB and 50 mg L-1 SR dyes were completely photodegrade under UV irradiation after only 20 and 45 minutes, respectively, in the presence of 1.0 mg/mL ZnO NPs. When they are exposed to visible light, the degradation efficiency reached 91 and 75% within 60 and 120 min, respectively. Photocatalytic measurements of RTW depict that 95% (within 60 min under UV illumination) and 79% (within 90 min under visible illumination) were degraded, respectively. The enhanced photodegradation can be attributed to the narrowing of the bandgap of the ZnO NPs, high crystallinity and nearly hexagonal morphology with an average size of 20-30 nm. The present results show that ZnO NPs could potentially be applied for high-efficiency degradation of organic dyes and RTW under both UV and visible light irradiation.
Boosting photocatalytic stability: hydrophilic Sr-doped ZnO thin films prepared via the SILAR method for enhanced performance over multiple cycles

Abstract:This study deals with the synthesis and characterization of Sr-doped ZnO thin films with different concentrations (1, 3, 5, and 7 wt. %) using the SILAR method (Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction). The main objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the films as photocatalysts for the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the polycrystalline nature of the films, with the crystallite size increasing with increasing Sr doping along the (100) plane. Morphological changes on the film surfaces are revealed by scanning electron microscopy and correlate with the increasing Sr content. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirms that there are no impurities in all films. 3D surface topography shows that higher Sr doping leads to an increase in average roughness and root mean square (Rq) values. Measurements of the water droplet contact angle (WDCA) indicate the hydrophilicity of the surface. Optical analysis shows that the absorption capacity of the films increases with Sr doping and shifts slightly towards longer wavelengths. Additionally, the band gap energy (Eg) shows a linear increment with higher Sr dopant concentrations. The unique contribution of this work lies in the careful investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using Sr-doped ZnO films as photocatalysts under natural sunlight. In particular, the films doped with 5 wt. % Sr show exceptional performance, achieving degradation rates of 94.82%, 94.61%, and 93.48% for the first, second, and third cycles, respectively. The novelty of these results lies in the successful synthesis of Sr-doped ZnO thin films by SILAR, the comprehensive characterization of their properties and the remarkable photocatalytic efficiency observed under real sunlight conditions. This work provides valuable insights into the potential application of these unique films for the efficient degradation of methylene blue, thus contributing to the further development of environmentally friendly photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of organic pollutants in water sources necessitates the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts for their degradation. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied for their photocatalytic properties; however, their application is hindered by low photocatalytic efficiency and high recombination rates of photogenerated carriers. This manuscript explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of intercalated ZnO/SiO 2 nanocomposites (NCs), synthesized through a combination of co-precipitation and Stöber methods, as a solution to these challenges. A comprehensive analysis of the structural, optical elemental and Morphological properties of both ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO 2 NCs was conducted using various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–Vis spectrometry and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Through, XRD analysis, the calculated crystallite sizes of ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs were found to be 36 nm and 39 nm respectively. TEM images illustrated that the ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs have crystallized in elongated spherical morphology. XPS and FTIR analyses provided the signature band details the presence of Cu and Si in their Zn 2 + and Si4+ oxidation states. The optical bandgap energies were calculated to be 3.38 eV for ZnO NPs and 3.22 eV for ZnO/SiO2 NCs. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO/SiO 2 NCs achieved an impressive degradation rate of 92 % for Rhodamine B (RhB), compared to a relatively lower rate of 81 % for pure ZnO NPs for the degradation of RhB under visible light due to its lower bandgap, high surface area, and lower electron-hole recombination rate. BET surface area measurements revealed that ZnO nanoparticles have a surface area of 11.234 m 2 /g, while ZnO/SiO2 NCs show 57.118 m 2 /g, highlighting SiO2's enhancement. The NCs demonstrated exceptional reusability for degradation, sustaining high efficiency across multiple cycles. Its ability to scavenge superoxide radicals highlighted the effectiveness of the ZnO/SiO2 NCs in environmental remediation, especially for wastewater treatment.

Enhanced sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity in assembled ZrO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposite

Abstract:In recent years, solar energy photocatalysis has been extensively used for the removal of organic pollutants and it is desirable to have a plethora of materials with high photocatalytic efficiency to treat a wide variety of organic pollutants. The semiconducting metal oxides are a class of materials with high photocatalytic activity and structural stability that can be potential candidates to treat industrial effluents. Though ZrO 2 has been investigated for its photocatalytic activity, the wide bandgap has limited its application in sunlight photocatalytic degradation. In an attempt to tune the bandgap of ZrO 2 , a heterogeneous ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst has been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method at different weight proportions. The structural characteristics were ascertained by the XRD and FTIR which confirms the formation of the ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composite. The dye degradation characteristics were investigated for g-C 3 N 4 , ZrO 2 and ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composite and their photocatalytic kinetics were studied. The photocatalytic activity degraded 65%, 41%, 89% of methylene blue (MB) and 60%, 38%, 77% of xylenol orange (XyO) dyes in 75 min under solar light irradiation. Further, the ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (1:1 wt%) nanocomposite improves the photocatalytic rate five times for MB and three times for XyO. In addition, band gap tuning, surface morphology, and pore formation were ascertained by optical absorption, SEM and BET analysis. The optical absorption spectrum reveals that the ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (1:1 wt%) nanocomposite tunes the bandgap of ZrO 2 from 3.67 to 2.87 eV. BET surface analysis confirms the enhancement of the surface area upon the nanocomposite formation. These results suggest that a high photocatalytic activity has been achieved via bandgap tuning for efficient charge carrier generation and enhancement of surface area for efficient charge transfer in ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 . Also, the ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite has good reusability and structural stability toward the degradation of MB and XyO. In an essence, ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite with improved photocatalytic characters can serve as an apt material for environmental remediation application.

Abstract:As the textile industry expands, more industrial waste effluents are released into natural water streams, prompting the research and development of innovative materials for the remediation of environmental issues. In this research, a direct precipitation and hydrolysis method were used to synthesize ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively that were utilized to investigate the photocatalytic activity of Congo Red (CR) dye. Afterward, the crystallite size was computed from the data of the X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and utilizing several models (Scherrer equation, LSLMSE, Monshi-Scherrer equation, Williamson-Hall model, Size-strain plot method, Halder-Wagner model, Sahadat-Scherrer model). Among these models, the size-strain plot model yields the most accurate crystal size (45.31 nm) for ZnO nanoparticles and the Halder-Wagner model (2.44 nm) for TiO2 nanoparticles. Scanning Electron Microscope exhibited the spherical shape of nanoparticles (ZnO, and TiO2) with particle size (less than 151 nm). The absorption spectrum from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanoparticles (ZnO, and TiO2). Thereafter, the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO-TiO2 nanocomposite was evaluated by using Congo Red (CR) dye under different process variables, such as catalyst dose, time, initial dye concentration, pH, radical scavenging ability, and reusability. The best degradation (90 %) was recorded at 180 min time intervals using a 0.2 g catalyst dose with a 20 ppm CR concentration at pH 9.

Abstract:Photocatalytic deg radation of environmental pollutants is being up to date for the treatment of contaminated water. In the present study, ZnO/CuO nanomaterials were successfully fabricated by a simple sol-gel method and investigate the photo-degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The synthesized ZnO/CuO nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), thermal analysis (TGA), surface charge, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The photo-degradation of the dye RhB was followed spectroscopically. The overall composition of ZnO/CuO material was found to be wurtzite phase, with particle size of 30 nm, and the Vis light absorption increased with an increase of Cu content. The ZnO/CuO nanomaterials were highly active leading to a photo-degradation of 10 ppm RhB reaching 98% within 180 min at 0.1 g/L catalyst dosage. The change in surface charge after degradation evaluated by ζ potential measurements and the differences in functional vibration group monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicates that the RhB adsorption on the Zn45Cu surface was insignificant. And scavenging experiments demonstrate that the RhB degradation by ZnO/CuO nanomaterials involves to some degree hydroxyl radicals.

Abstract:The synthesis of polymers by an oxidation-mediated approach effectively resulted in the generation of a polymer/phosphotungstic acid-zirconia nanohybrid. Characterization techniques, including XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, and DRS–UV, were investigated to the synthesized material. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and high resolution scanning electron microscopy were used to study the morphological analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites. The results of the morphological analysis reveal that the polymer developed on the outside of the nanoparticles, increasing its ability to absorb visible light. With the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the chemical composition was assessed. By degrading pollutants like methylene blue (MB) dye and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), the catalytic performance of a nanohybrid fabricated from polypyrrole (PPy) and phosphotungstic acid zirconia under visible light stimulation was examined. According to the observation, PPy/PTA-ZrO 2 (1:3) breaks down MB dye more effectively, up to 94%, whereas PPy/PTA-ZrO 2 (2:1) performs better, breaking down 2,4-D up to 90%. According to the observed results, polymer nanohybrids have been proven to be beneficial in photodegrading different types of pollutants when exposed to visible light. The polymer hybrid is more appropriate for environmental remediation due to its low cost, ease of manufacture, and increased photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with diverse morphologies were synthesized using an economical and environmentally friendly co-precipitation method. The samples underwent characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectra analysis. The photocatalytic degradation capabilities of the synthesized samples were assessed using organic dyes and antibiotics as model pollutants. SEM images revealed nanospheres, nanorods, and nanotubes structures of ZnO under three distinct conditions. The average crystallite sizes of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO samples were determined using Debye–Scherrer's formula from the full width at half maximum of XRD peaks, resulting in sizes of 52.80, 57.23, and 78.02 nm for ZnO nanospheres (ZnO-S), ZnO nanotubes (ZnO-T), and ZnO nanorods (ZnO-R), respectively. The optical band gap energies were measured at 3.25, 3.26, and 3.28 eV for ZnO-S, ZnO-T, and ZnO-R, respectively, demonstrating lower values compared to bulk ZnO (3.37 eV). Photocatalytic efficiency assessment using methylene blue indicated that ZnO-S exhibited the highest degradation efficiency (98.64%), followed by ZnO-T (97.63%) and ZnO-R (59.94%) under optimized conditions of 0.05 g/L catalyst dose, 90-min irradiation time, 130-W light intensity, and 1-mg/L methylene blue concentration. ZnO-S demonstrated effective photocatalysis in the ofloxacin degradation with a rate constant of 0.0112 min −1 . According to a study on photocatalytic mechanisms, hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the degradation of pollutants. The photocatalyst maintains high photocatalytic efficiency even after five uses. Collectively, ZnO with different morphologies holds promise as a potential catalyst for environmental protection.

Abstract:One of the biggest problems in the ecosystem is wastewater contaminated with industrial dyes. These pollutants have a very stable chemical structure, which causes complicated removal. However, a possible alternative for wastewater treatment is zinc oxide semiconductor nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The approach of this study was the implementation of a green synthesis methodology for the obtention of ZnO nanoparticles employing Ipomoea stans (TV) leaves as extracts. The properties of the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized at 1 %, 2 %, and 4 % w/v (weight/volume) concentration of the extract were obtained from the characterization using different techniques. The FTIR analysis determined the presence of the active functional groups attached to the surface, which capped and stabilized the ZnO NPs; a band located in the range of 500-390 cm −1 confirms the presence of the Zn–O bond. The UV absorption spectra of all ZnO NPs samples were determined by executing the ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy technique, with a characteristic signal located at ∼370 nm and energy gap values between 3.036 eV and 3.101 eV. In addition, XRD patterns determined the average crystallite sizes to be 30.78 nm for ZnO-TV 1 %, 18.68 nm ZnO-TV 2 %, and 11.96 nm ZnO-TV 4 %, respectively. Furthermore, the results from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) displayed the following values of mean particle size of 21 nm, 24.4 nm, and 10.16 nm for ZnO-TV 1 %, ZnO-TV 2 % and ZnO-TV 4 % with S.D. 9.10, 12.5 and 3.6. Finally, the photocatalytic activity was evaluated utilizing the industrial dyes Methyl Orange, Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B, Malachite Green, and Congo Red. Obtaining outstanding results in the degradation of all industrial dyes. All syntheses achieved degradation greater than 91 % for methyl orange, methylene blue, and rhodamine B.

Abstract:Photo-catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) find applications in many diverse fields, including environmental remediation, energy conversion, and organic synthesis. By optimizing the nanoparticle's composition, size, morphology, and surface properties, the photo-catalytic performance can be enhanced to develop more efficient and sustainable catalytic systems. This work aligns with this innovative approach and aims to improve the photo-catalytic degradation of Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) through the intensification of the photo-catalyst and the micro-reactor. ZnO-NPs were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Zinc Acetate (Z.A) and sodium hydroxide were used as precursor materials. The resulting ZnO-NPs were characterized for their structure and crystallinity using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and the photo-catalytic activity was assessed with a micro-structured polymer reactor. The degradation of SMX through photo-catalysis proceeds through several stages that involve coupled processes, such as the transportation of molecules and chemical reactions. To solve the mathematical equations governing the transport and photocatalytic reaction, COMSOL Multiphysics software was utilized. The characterization results demonstrate the excellent crystallinity and high purity of the synthesized ZnO-NPs, enabling the estimation of the average diameter of the NPs under different synthesis conditions. The grain growth is faster (3.5 hr) at higher temperatures (70, 80, and 90 °C), and slower (4 hr) at lower temperatures (50 and 60°C). The photo-catalytic degradation is significantly more efficient on 16 nm ZnO-NPs than 50 nm ZnO-NPs. At this size, the conversion rate reaches 96%, surpassing the performance of commercial ZnO-NPs, which only degrades 81% of SMX. The conversion rate obtained through simulation is slightly higher than that achieved in the experiments. However, this difference remains negligible, and overall, the model fits well with the experimental data. This validation of the chosen model confirms its reliability and accuracy.
