Abstract:Core-shell microspheres with,controllable shell thickness-to-radius (TIR) ratios were fabricated using coaxial electrospraying for hydrophobic drug delivery using Sudan Red (dye) as a model hydrophobic active. Systematic investigations were conducted to determine the effects of several parameters on the particle diameter, shell thickness, and structure. These included polymer concentration, flow rate, applied voltage, collection distance and needle-to-ground electrode distance. The resulting microspheres were characterized by SEM and optical microscopy, which showed spherical core-shell geometries with tunable particle diameters and TIR ratios ranging from 30 to 70 mu m and between 0.12 and 0.3, respectively. FTIR was used to assess material stability during the one-step preparation of microspheres. MTT assay and fluorescence microscopy indicated no significant effect on cell growth behavior over a 24 h period when assessed using variable particle concentrations (between 10 pg/ml and 10 mg/ml). In-vitro release of the oil-soluble dye exhibited a fast release onset followed by a sustained release which was controlled by changing particle size or T/R ratio. The results indicate potential applications for core-shell encapsulation and controlled release of hydrophobic drugs using the materials and processes described. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MAGNETIC COMPOSITE MICROSPHERES WITH CORE-SHELL STRUCTURE

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4/P (MMA/DVB)((core))-P (St/(GMA/DVB)((shell)) composite microspheres with core-shell structure were prepared by a two-step method. (1) Preparation of the magnetic cores: First, the magnetic miniemulsion composed of organic ferrofluid droplets dispersed in water was obtained by rapid addition of an oil-based magnetite ferrofluid, with a solid content 60 wt%, into the aqueous solution using DNS-86 (polymerizable surfactant) as surfactant in the condition of ultrasonic emulsification. Then, the copolymerization monomers of methyl mathacrylate (MMA) and divinyl benzene (DVB) were injected directly into the magnetic miniemulsion. Because of their hydrophobic character, once the monomers were added into the emulsion, the methyl mathacrylate (MMA) and divinyl benzene (DVB) would have a high tendency to diffuse inside the organic phase of the ferrofluid droplets to form monomer swelling magnetic miniemulsion, Which were supposed to be the main locus for copolymerization. in succession, the temperature was rapidly increased to 70 degrees C and starting the miniemulsion copolymerization to form uniform magnetic latexes. (2) Preparation of the core/shell hybrid polymeric microspheres: Through varying the feeding amount of styrene (St), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and DVB, the core-shell structured microspheres were rationally fabricated by the seed emulsion copolymerization using the above magnetic latex as the core emulsion. This preparation process is convenient and effective. Extensive. characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) showed that the magnetite content of Fe3O4/P(MMA/DVB) composite microspheres was 84 wt %. The magnetite content of the magnetic composite microspheres with core-shell Structure is varied from 20 wt % to 76 wt % by feeding different amount of monomers. The average diameter of the magnetic seeded microspheres and the core-shell composite microspheres is 150 nm and 350 nm, respectively. The functional epoxy groups on the surface of the core-shell composite microspheres can be further modified to load biomolecules.

Abstract:Functional core-shell mesoporous microspheres with integrated functions, controlled structure, and surface properties and morphologies have received increasing attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Herein, core-shell magnetic mesoporous materials with cauliflower-like morphology and tunable surface roughness have been synthesized through a kinetics-controlled interface co-assembly and deposition of mesostructured nanocomposites on Fe3O4@RF microspheres (RF refers to resorcinol formaldehyde resin). The obtained microspheres, synthesized via this interface nanoengineering method, possess well-defined sandwich structure with a tunable rough morphology, uniform size (560-1000 nm), perpendicularly aligned mesopores (∼5.7 nm) in the outer shell, RF-protected magnetic responsive core, high surface area up to 382 m2/g, and large pore volume of 0.66 cm3/g. As a result of the unique surface features and magnetic properties, these microspheres exhibit excellent performance in stabilizing and oxygen-free manipulating aqueous solutions in petroleum ether by a magnetic field. They also exhibit superior cell uptake properties compared with traditional smooth core-shell magnetic mesoporous silica microspheres, opening up the possible applications in fast drug delivery in cancer therapy.

Abstract:As a microreactor,hollow microspheres could be used to load magnetic nanoparticles.Asymmetric hollow polymeric microspheres with micropores of 14.9 nm,alkyl bromine groups on exterior wall and carboxyl groups on interior wall were produced through three steps:(a) synthesis of the core-shell microparticles with copolymer of maleic anhydride(MAn) and divinyl benzene(DVB) as the shell,and copolymer of maleic anhydride(MAn) and vinylacetate(VAc) as the core;(b) surface bromizing of the core-shell microparticles by reaction with dibromoethane;(c) etching of the cores with acetone,and followed by the hydrolyzing of the anhydride groups on interior wall.Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were loaded into the cavity of prepared hollow polymeric microspheres by two steps: first,Fe2+ and Fe3+ were infiltrated into the hollow microspheres and selective adsorbed on the interior wall under the effect of carboxyl groups;secondly,in appropriate condition,coprecipitation were carried out to obtain Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles.In addition,influences of parameters relating to the above mentioned reaction,such as the mole ratio of Fe2+ and Fe3+,reaction temperature and reaction time,on the saturation magnetization of the magnetic microspheres were investigated.The results show that,the optimum reaction conditions to the balance of loading selectivity and value of saturation magnetization were as follow: molar ratio of Fe2+ and Fe3+ was 2/3,reaction temperature was 80℃ and reaction time was 1.5 h,for obtained the best value of saturation magnetization 12.34 emu/g.
Amphiphilic Block Copolymers Directed Interface Coassembly to Construct Multifunctional Microspheres with Magnetic Core and Monolayer Mesoporous Aluminosilicate Shell

Abstract:Core–shell magnetic porous microspheres have wide applications in drug delivery, catalysis and bioseparation, and so on. However, it is great challenge to controllably synthesize magnetic porous microspheres with uniform well‐aligned accessible large mesopores (>10 nm) which are highly desired for applications involving immobilization or adsorption of large guest molecules or nanoobjects. In this study, a facile and general amphiphilic block copolymer directed interfacial coassembly strategy is developed to synthesize core–shell magnetic mesoporous microspheres with a monolayer of mesoporous shell of different composition (FDUcs‐17D), such as core–shell magnetic mesoporous aluminosilicate (CS‐MMAS), silica (CS‐MMS), and zirconia‐silica (CS‐MMZS), open and large pores by employing polystyrene‐block‐poly (4‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) as an interface structure directing agent and aluminum acetylacetonate (Al(acac)3), zirconium acetylacetonate, and tetraethyl orthosilicate as shell precursors. The obtained CS‐MMAS microspheres possess magnetic core, perpendicular mesopores (20–32 nm) in the shell, high surface area (244.7 m2 g−1), and abundant acid sites (0.44 mmol g−1), and as a result, they exhibit superior performance in removal of organophosphorus pesticides (fenthion) with a fast adsorption dynamics and high adsorption capacity. CS‐MMAS microspheres loaded with Au nanoparticles (≈3.5 nm) behavior as a highly active heterogeneous nanocatalyst for N‐alkylation reaction for producing N‐phenylbenzylamine with a selectivity and yields of over 90% and good magnetic recyclability.

Abstract:Novel functional microspheres with multistimuli-responsive properties have been prepared and characterized. The as-prepared microspheres respond to an external magnetic field, environmental temperature, and ultraviolet radiation. The in vitro drug-loading efficiency and drug-release behavior of these microspheres demonstrated that they could be used as drug carriers for drug controlled release. The results of in vivo distribution investigations of these microspheres showed that they exhibit a high magnetic-targeting effect, which holds promise for applications in various fields such as magnetic drug targeting and tissue labeling, among others.

Abstract:An ultrafast, facile, and efficient microwave hydrothermal approach was designed to fabricate magnetic Fe(3)O(4)/phenol-formaldehyde (PF) core-shell microspheres for the first time. The structure of the Fe(3)O(4)/PF core-shell microspheres could be well controlled by the in situ polycondensation of phenol and formaldehyde with magnetic Fe(3)O(4) clusters as the seeds in an aqueous solution without any surfactants. The effect of synthetic parameters, such as the feeding amounts of phenol, the dosages of formaldehyde, the reaction temperatures, and the microwave heating time, on the morphologies and sizes of the Fe(3)O(4)/PF microspheres were investigated in details. The phenol-formaldehyde shell is found to be evenly coated on Fe(3)O(4) clusters within 10 min of the irradiation. The as-prepared microspheres were highly uniform in morphology, and the method was found to allow the shell thickness to be finely controlled in the range of 10-200 nm. The properties of the composite microspheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The as-prepared Fe(3)O(4)/PF microspheres were monodisperse and highly dispersible in water, ethanol, N,N-dimethyformamide, and acetone, a beneficial quality for the further functionalization and applications of the Fe(3)O(4)/PF microspheres.

Abstract:A facile and effective approach to preparation of dual-responsive magnetic core/shell composite microspheres is reported. The magnetite(Fe3O4)/poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) composite microspheres were synthesized through encapsulating c-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS)-modified magnetite colloid nanocrystal clusters (MCNCs) with crosslinked PMAA shell. First, the 200-nm-sized MCNCs were fabricated through solvothermal reaction, and then the MCNCs were modified with MPS to form active vinyl groups on the surface of MCNCs, and finally, a pH-responsive shell of PMAA was coated onto the surface of MCNCs by distillation-precipitation polymerization. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer characterization showed that the obtained composite microspheres had welldefined core/shell structure and high saturation magnetization value (35 emu/g). The experimental results indicated that the thickness and degree of crosslinking of PMAA shell could be well-controlled. The pH-induced change in size exhibited by the core/shell microspheres reflected the PMAA shell contained large amount of carboxyl groups. The carboxyl groups and high saturation magnetization make these microspheres have a great potential in biomolecule separation and drug carriers. Moreover, we also demonstrated that other magnetic polymeric microspheres, such as Fe3O4/PAA, Fe3O4/PAM, and Fe3O4/PNIPAM, could be synthesized by this approach. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The separation of target substances is a significant biological detection procedure, where magnetic microspheres can act as high-performance separation materials. However, challenges are still kept to fulfill all the requirements. A submicron magnetic poly (glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microsphere was synthesized in this investigation by utilizing three distinct techniques: in situ coprecipitation, electrostatic self-assembly, and silica surface coating. The PGMA microspheres were initially produced through a soap-free emulsion polymerization technique, wherein the coagulation process was governed by surface charge density. This factor additionally impacted the size and monodispersity of the microspheres. Then, we discovered that the capping agent sodium citrate (Na 3 Cit) effectively regulated the superparamagnetism properties of magnetic microspheres; the critical size of the superparamagnetic was 10.9 nm. Furthermore, the concentration of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ effectively regulated the saturation magnetization, a property that correlated with the nucleation rate of the Fe 3 O 4 crystal. Additionally, we demonstrated that the pH regulated the electrostatic self-assembly, and it was suggested that positively charged PGMA–NH 2 microspheres and negatively charged Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles be tightly coupled. For application, the PGMA@Fe 3 O 4 microspheres were subsequently coated with SiO 2 , which had been surface-modified with carboxyl groups. The PGMA@Fe 3 O 4 and carboxyl-modified microspheres exhibited saturated magnetization values of 23.73 and 17.73 emu/g, respectively. These microspheres have been effectively utilized for the extraction of DNA from various sources such as Salmonella typhi, monkeypox virus, and clinical swab samples, suggesting the potential of these microspheres for nucleic acid separation in the biomedical domain.

Abstract:A novel approach was applied to prepare shell thickness controllable magnetic microsphere precursor through the self-assembly of PDMS homopolymer with PFS-b-PDMS in selective solvent and adjusting the prepared conditions of samples such as temperature and aging time. Miniemulsion-based assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles and synthesis of magnetic polymer nanospheres

Abstract:A facile method to synthesize core-shell iron oxide/polymer nanospheres has been developed. Oleic acid-modified iron oxide nanoparticles were first prepared by the coprecipitation method. The iron oxide nanoparticles were then assembled into colloidal magnetic nanoparticle clusters (MNCs) by a miniemulsion-based assembly approach. The size of the MNCs can be tuned from about 50 nm to about 93 nm by rationally designing the experimental conditions. Magnetic iron oxide/poly(methyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (P(MMA-co-DVB)) nanospheres with well-defined core-shell structure and uniform size were finally prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization with the MNCs as the seeds. By the same procedure, core-shell iron oxide/poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) (P(St-co-DVB)) nanospheres were also successfully fabricated, demonstrating the versatility of the preparation method. The prepared composite nanospheres have uniform size, high saturation magnetization, and easily functionalized surface, promising for further biomedical applications and liquid phase catalysis.

Abstract:A modified method to prepare chitosan–poly(acrylic acid)(CS–PAA) polymer magnetic microspheres was reported in this paper. First, via self-assembly of positively charged CS and negatively charged Fe3O4 nanoparticles, magnetic CS cores with a large amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared. Subsequently, the AA monomers were polymerized on the magetic CS cores based on the reaction system of water-soluble polymer–monomer pairs. These polymer magnetic microspheres had a high Fe3O4 loading content, and showed unique pH-dependent behaviors on the size and zeta potential. From the magnetometer measurements data, the CS–PAA polymer magnetic microspheres also had superparamagnetic property as well as fast magnetic response. A continuous release of the entrapped ammonium glycyrrhizinate in such polymer magnetic microspheres occurred, which confirmed the potential applications of these microspheres for the targeted delivery of drugs.

Abstract:This work reports a hard self-template method to synthesize core/shell like Fe3O4@C microparticles, in which the Pd nanocrystals can be alternatively incorporated into the carbon shells. The Fe3O4@polyaniline core/shell microspheres were first synthesized as the precursor by in situ polymerization of aniline onto the surface of the Fe3O4 microspheres. In a subsequent carbonization of the precursor under a vacuum oven, the Fe3O4 core was preserved and the polyaniline shell transferred into carbon shells enveloping the magnetic sphere, forming magnetic Fe3O4@C microspheres. The Pd ions could be impregnated into the polyaniline shell, and thus the obtained composites were transformed into Fe3O4@C/Pd microspheres under the same vacuum heating progress. The as-obtained system demonstrates superparamagnetic characteristics, which would benefit its potential application in nanocatalysts. This strategy provides an efficient approach for tailoring core/shell materials with desired functionalities and structures by adjusting the precursors and structure-directing agents.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple approach was presented to prepare functional inorganic/organic composite microspheres in which the inorganic nanoparticles were encapsulated into the polyelectrolyte complexes between chitosan (CS) and poly(aspartic acid) sodium salt (PAsp). The magnetic microspheres were prepared via electrostatic interaction between the citrate groups stabilizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the amino groups of CS. Being taken as a kind of special polyelectrolyte with high molecular weight, the inorganic nanoparticles presented strong interaction with polyelectrolyte. By tuning the unit molar ratio of the opposite charged polyelectrolytes and the amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the structure of the composite microspheres could be controlled and the dimension of microspheres ranged from 110 nm to 320 nm. Then the approach was extended to prepare luminescent-magnetic CS–PAsp microspheres by encapsulated Fe3O4 nanoparticles and CdTe quantum dots synchronously, which exhibited superior pH stability and remained strong photoluminescence properties after crosslinking. The CdTe–Fe3O4/CS–PAsp composite microspheres are potentially useful for further application in biolabeling and imaging.
Fe3O4@MOF Core–shell Magnetic Microspheres with a Designable Metal–organic Framework Shell

Abstract:A novel kind of porous microsphere with a magnetic core and a tunable metal–organic framework (MOF) shell has been successfully fabricated utilizing a versatile step-by-step assembly strategy. The structure, composition, and function of the microspheres can be judiciously tailored by choosing various metal ions and polyfunctional organic ligands or tuning the assembly processes. Our results provide a valuable methodology for rationally designing novel core–shell architectures and MOF-based porous magnetic platforms.
Interface Coassembly and Polymerization on Magnetic Colloids: Toward Core–Shell Functional Mesoporous Polymer Microspheres and Their Carbon Derivatives

Abstract:Abstract Core–shell structured magnetic mesoporous polymer or carbon‐based microspheres not only possess the combined merits of magnetic particles and stable mesoporous shell but also provide various organic functional groups for further modification and immobilization of active sites, thus opening up more possibility for various applications. Herein, a bottom‐up soft‐templating strategy is developed to controllably synthesize core–shell magnetic mesoporous polydopamine microspheres (MMP) and their derivative magnetic mesoporous carbon (MMC) microspheres via an amphiphilic block copolymer‐directed interface assembly and polymerization (denoted as abc‐DIAP) approach. The obtained uniform MMP microspheres have a well‐defined structure consisting of magnetic core, silica middle layer and mesoporous PDA shell, uniform mesopores of 11.9 nm, high specific surface areas (235.6 m2 g−1) and rich functional groups. They show fast magnetic separation speed and superior performance in selective adsorption of Cyt.C from complex biosample solutions. Moreover, they can be in situ converted into core–shell magnetic mesoporous carbon (MMC) for efficient in‐pore immobilization of ultrafine Au nanoparticles for high‐efficiency catalytic epoxidation of styrene with high conversion (88.6%) and selectivity (90.1%) toward styrene oxide.
Toward Designer Magnetite/polystyrene Colloidal Composite Microspheres with Controllable Nanostructures and Desirable Surface Functionalities.

Abstract:An effective method was developed for synthesizing magnetite/polymer colloidal composite microspheres with controllable variations in size and shape of the nanostructures and desirable interfacial chemical functionalities, using surfactant-free seeded emulsion polymerization with magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) colloidal nanocrystal clusters (CNCs) as the seed, styrene (St) as the monomer, and potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator. The sub-micrometer-sized citrate-acid-stabilized Fe(3)O(4) CNCs were first obtained via ethylene glycol (EG)-mediated solvothermal synthesis, followed by 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPS) modification to immobilize the active vinyl groups onto the surfaces, and then the hydrophobic St monomers were polymerized at the interfaces to form the polymer shells by seeded emulsion radical polymerization. The morphology of the composite microspheres could be controlled from raspberry- and flower-like shapes, to eccentric structures by simply adjusting the feeding weight ratio of the seed to the monomer (Fe(3)O(4)/St) and varying the amount of cross-linker divinyl benzene (DVB). The morphological transition was rationalized by considering the viscosity of monomer-swollen polymer matrix and interfacial tension between the seeds and polymer matrix. Functional groups, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, and epoxy, can be facilely introduced onto the composite microspheres through copolymerization of St with other functional monomers. The resultant microspheres displayed a high saturation magnetization (46 emu/g), well-defined core-shell nanostructures, and surface chemical functionalities, as well as a sustained colloidal stability, promising for further biomedical applications.
