Abstract:A new mole cricket, Tresdigitus rectanguli gen. et sp. nov., is described based on a well-preserved specimen from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. It can be definitely attributed to the family Gryllotalpidae (mole cricket), but cannot be incorporated into any existing subfamily of Gryllotalpidae because of the unusual combination of its characteristics. This new find is not only the second record of Gryllotalpidae from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, but also provides novel morphological diversity in Gryllotalpidae, showing original characteristics of body structures especially protibial dactyls.

Abstract:A new species of Cascogryllus and a new genus of Tridactylidae (pygmy mole crickets) are established based on two specimens from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber. Amberotridactylus cheni gen. et sp. nov. is mainly characterized by nine-segmented antennae, absence of swimming plates (tibial lamellae) on serrated metatibia, metatarsus slightly longer than apical spurs, and absence of subapical denticular process on metatarsus. Amberotridactylus cheni gen. et sp. nov. is the first representative of the subfamily Tridactylinae from the Mesozoic and the oldest fossil record of this subfamily. Cascogryllus setosus sp. nov. is mainly identified by ten-segmented antennae, prosternum with a prosternal tubercle, curved ScA nearly ending on mid-length of ScP, R present, and almost identical length of paraproctal lobes and cerci. Our findings enrich the biodiversity of pygmy mole crickets in the Cretaceous.

Abstract:A new Gryllidea family, Pseudogryllotalpidae fam. nov., is reported based on morphological and phylogenetic analysis. Pseudogryllotalpidae fam. nov. likely represents a 'transitional' group, as it exhibits morphological and environmental characteristics that establish connections between Gryllotalpoidea and Grylloidea. The split between Grylloidea and the soil‐inhabiting clade composed of Gryllotalpoidea and Pseudogryllotalpidae fam. nov. can be traced back to the Permian. Grylloidea (crickets) and Gryllotalpoidea (mole crickets and ant crickets) are relatively ancient lineages within Orthoptera but their fossil records are not very rich. They are currently considered sister clades within the Gryllidea but with obvious differences in morphology and ecological adaptations. We report a new gryllidean family, †Pseudogryllotalpidae fam. nov. with three new genera and four new species, viz. †Pseudogryllotalpa scalprata gen. et sp. nov., †Unidigitus longialatus gen. et sp. nov., †Petilus zhengi gen. et sp. nov. and †Chunxiania fascia sp. nov. from the mid‐Cretaceous of northern Myanmar (ca. 99 million years ago). Their external and short ovipositors and their modified fossorial forelegs suggest a soil‐inhabiting preference. This new family exhibits a series of 'intermediate' character states between Grylloidea and Gryllotalpoidea and seems to be a 'transitional' fossil group linking these two superfamilies. This new family was resolved as a sister group of the extant Gryllotalpoidea and provides a new insight into the relationship and evolution of Grylloidea and Gryllotalpoidea.

Abstract:A new genus and species, Magnidactylus robustus gen. et sp. nov., is described on the basis of a well-preserved orthopteran insect from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber and attributed to the subfamily Dentridactylinae of the family Tridactylidae (Orthoptera: Tridactyloidea). This new taxon not only provides novel morphological diversity in Tridactylidae (pygmy mole crickets), but also represents the largest one of all the tridactylids reported from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The pygmy mole crickets of mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber had no swimming plates, suggesting that their habitat was less related to freshwater than the extant ones.

Abstract:The abundance of insects in Burmese amber illustrates a highly diverse insect community from the mid-Cretaceous period; yet, records of crickets (Grylloidea) are notably scarce. In this study, we describe two new genera with three new species, Palaeotrigonidium concavoculus gen. et sp. nov., Palaeotrigonidium defectivus sp. nov., and Tricalcaratus longilineus gen. et sp. nov., based on three specimens collected in north Myanmar. These new species can be placed within the Trigonidiidae (Orthoptera: Grylloidea) by their triangular head, compound eyes that protrude in dorsal view, and a body entirely covered with robust setae, particularly noticeable in the head and pronotum; however, subfamily assignments are not possible. Another known species, Birmaninemobius hirsutus, Xu et al., 2020, from Myanmar amber is redescribed based on a new specimen and a recheck of the holotype.

Here, we erect two new genera with two new species, Birmanioecanthus haplostichus gen. et sp. nov. and Apiculatus cretaceus gen. et sp. nov., based on two new specimens from northern Myanmar amber. These new species can be assigned to the subfamily Oecanthinae (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) by their prognathous head, slender body and metatibiae, and protibiae with large tympana. These new findings are the first and earliest fossil record of tree crickets and shed light on the evolution of Oecanithinae.

Abstract:A survey was conducted in two successive years, from March 2016 to March 2018, in three regions of Cameroon, during which two new species were collected in two regions and described. These two species, Gryllotalpa cameroonensis sp. nov. and Gryllotalpa tamessei sp. nov. were caught using the pitfall method in forests, agroforests, herbaceous fallows, and crop fields. From an ecological point of view, both new species were accidental in all vegetation types except crop fields, in which Gryllotalpa cameroonensis sp. nov. was accessory. Their habitat characteristics might require sandy soil for G. cameroon ensis sp. nov. and silty soil for G. tamessei sp. nov. , as well as low soil moisture and acid soil for both new species. The descriptions were followed by a revised key to the Afrotropical parva group species. This paper helps update the data on mole cricket biodiversity in Africa.

Abstract:The second species of the extinct genus Burmalestes Tomaszewska & Ślipiński, B. jingruoyaae Li & Cai sp. nov., is reported from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber of northern Myanmar. The new species shares characters with both Burmalestes (antennomere 5 elongate and procoxae subcontiguous) and Cretaparamecus Tomaszewska et al. (protibiae toothed and pronotum without basolateral sulci), providing valuable information on the morphological variability of this group.

Abstract:A new genus and species of the cleroid family Lophocateridae are described and illustrated from the mid-Cretaceous amber of northern Myanmar. Gracilenticrus burmiticus Yu, Kolibáč & Ślipiński gen. et sp. nov. is unique among Lophocateridae in the tiny body size, frontoclypeal suture and antennal grooves absent, symmetrical antennal clubs, protrochantin reduced, tarsal claws small and widened at base. A key to the species of Mesozoic Lophocateridae is also provided. Morphological characters of the newly discovered Gracilenticrus were analyzed together with representatives of 43 extant genera of Cleroidea (broadly defined Trogossitidae) in a matrix of 91 characters. Gracilenticrus burmiticus was resolved as a member of Lophocateridae. The discovery of a diverse fauna of Lophocateridae in the mid-Cretaceous sheds a new light on the early evolution of superfamily Cleroidea.

Abstract:The beetle family Mysteriomorphidae (Coleoptera: Elateroidea) was recently described based on a single species from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Only six specimens of an unknown sex were reported in previous studies. Here, for the first time, we examine female specimens of Mysteriomorphus Alekseev and Ellenberger, 2019 for which we describe the morphology of the ovipositor and report striking differences between them in several diagnostic characters. Additionally, we synonymize the recently described genus Trapezioceps Qu, Jarzembowski and Luo, 2023, syn. nov. with Mysteriomorphus. The monospecific Trapezioceps, also known only from Burmese amber, was erroneously classified in Cantharidae. We tentatively keep the species originally described in Trapezioceps valid, hence Mysteriomorphidae currently contain two described species: M. pelevini Alekseev and Ellenberger, 2019 and M. longelytrus (Qu, Jarzembowski and Luo, 2023), comb. nov. Based on the new findings, we discuss the morphology, variability, and diversity of Mysteriomorphus.

Abstract:The abundance of insects in Burmese amber illustrates a highly diverse orthoptera community of the mid-Cretaceous, but the records of ripipterygids are relatively rare. Here, we reviewed the genus of Magnidactylus (Xu, Fang and Jarzembowski, 2020) and transfered it from Tridactylidae to Ripipterygidae. Based on four ambers specimens collected from northern Myanmar, two new species, Magnidactylus mirus sp. nov. and Magnidactylus gracilis sp. nov., wereerected. M. mirus sp. nov. can be characterized by its basal segment and apical segment of paraproctal lobes, which are equally thick and clavate. M. gracilis sp. nov. can be characterized by its apical segment of paraproctal lobes, which are distinctly swollen. Additionally, in order to facilitate the classification of amber specimens of Tridactyloidea, a key to the genera ofambers in this superfamily is provided.

Abstract:Throscidae is a small family belonging to the polyphagan superfamily Elateroidea. Fossil throscids with a large morphological variety have been discovered from Cretaceous and Cenozoic amber deposits. However, only one of them has been reported from the fossil-rich Cretaceous Burmese amber so far. Here we describe and figure the second throscid beetle in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (ca. 99 Ma), Trixagosoma guangyuani gen. et sp. nov. The new fossil species has Trixagus-like short mesotarsal grooves and Potergosoma-like prosternum with nonparallel carinae. Our phylogenetic analysis indicates that it represents an early branching lineage of Throscidae. Its short mesotarsal grooves on metaventrite might represent an early evolutionary stage of this structure.

Abstract:Two new species, Burmusculus flexus sp. nov. and Burmusculus mutatus sp. nov. of Burmusculus Zhang and Rasnitsyn, 2018 in Burmusculidae, are described from the mid-Cretaceous amber of northern Myanmar. A key to all seven species of Burmusculus and detailed comparisons among the species are provided. Veins 1-Rs, 1-M, 1cu-a, 2m-cu and 2-Rs with different states suggest interspecific diagnostic characters within Burmusculus.

Abstract:A new genus and two new species, Tholimantispa zuoae gen. et sp. nov. and Mantispidipterella curvis sp. nov. are described from the Upper Cretaceous of northern Myanmar amber collected in 2015. Tholimantispa zuoae gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by its distinct pterostigma, broad costal space, bifurcate humeral veinlets, and so forth, and Mantispidipterella curvis sp. nov. is different from Mantispidipterella longissima Liu, Lu et Zhang, 2017 in its ScP (subcosta posterior) distinctly curved at fusing point with RA (radius anterior), RP (radius posterior) abruptly and angularly curved at ra‐rp (crossvein between RA and RP), AA3 (third branches of the anterior anal vein) present. The new fossil species enrich the diversity of Dipteromantispidae in the Cretaceous.

Abstract:A fossil species of the extant colydiine genus Bulasconotus Ślipiński & Lawrence, B. carinisternus Li, Ślipiński & Cai sp. nov., is reported from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber of northern Myanmar. The new species shares with extant Bulasconotus the 3-segmented antennal club, externally open procoxal cavities, and similar sculpture on the pronotum and elytra, but could be recognized by the medially carinated prosternal process. The present discovery provides a valuable example of morphological stasis in the cylindrical bark beetles.

Abstract:Based on exceptionally well-preserved mid-Cretaceous amber specimens from northern Myanmar, we identified a novel genus and species Elongatus kachinus gen. et sp. nov. (Bostrichidae, Dinoderinae). This classification was established on the basis of distinctive features, including the head being obscured from a top view, the antenna possessing nine segments, the pronotum lacking lateral margins, and occasionally displaying small tubercles at the rear. Additionally, the metatarsi are shorter than the metatibiae, with the final segment of each being equivalent in length to the preceding four segments combined. The unearthing of this new genus not only enhances the fossil record diversity within the Dinoderinae subfamily during the mid-Cretaceous period but also furnishes a valuable fossilized framework for prospective research on the broader evolution and progression of the Bostrichidae family.

Abstract:Two new species of cave-dwelling millipedes are described from Myanmar, one each in the genera Plusioglyphiulus Silvestri, 1923 and Trachyjulus Peters, 1864. Plusioglyphiulus digitiformissp. n. joins the small peculiar group of congeners from Thailand which is characterized by such plesiomorphies as the tergal crests on the collum and following metaterga being transversely divided into two, not three parts, as in species of the genus Glyphiulus Gervais, 1847. However, this new species differs by the 3-segmented telopodites of ♂ legs 1, the anterior gonopodal coxosternum showing higher and nearly straight apicomesal processes and very evident apicolateral teeth, as well as the higher and acuminate paramedian coxal processes of the posterior gonopods, the latter's telopodites demonstrating an apical fovea bearing a group of microsetae at the bottom. Trachyjulus bifidussp. n. is primarily distinguished by the telopodites of their anterior gonopods being strikingly and deeply bifid. A key to the five species of Cambalopsidae currently known to occur in Myanmar is presented, and a map showing their distributions given.
"Attagenus" Burmiticus from Mid-Cretaceous Amber Reinterpreted As a Member of Orphilinae (coleoptera: Dermestidae)

Abstract:Various dermestids have been reported from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (e.g., Deng et al., 2017; Háva & Damgaard, 2017; Háva, 2020, 2021). Among them, Attagenus burmiticus Cai et al. was the first adult described from this deposit (Cai et al., 2017). This fossil was originally attributed to the extant genus Attagenus in subfamily Attageninae. However, an important character was overlooked when they made this placement. Attagenus burmiticus has metacoxae meeting elytral epipleura laterally, which are unknown in any other Dermestidae except subfamily Orphilinae (Háva, 2004; Lawrence & Ślipiński 2005). In this study, we re-examine the holotype of A. burmiticus and transfer it into genus Nothattagenus Li & Cai gen. nov. in Orphilinae, as Nothattagenus burmiticus comb. nov.
Investigation of Cretodorus (hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Mimarachnidae) Based on New Adult and Nymph Fossils from Mid-Cretaceous Myanmar Amber

Abstract:Here we report a new species, Cretodorus lijuanae sp. nov., of extinct Mimarachnidae from mid-Cretaceous amber of northern Myanmar. C. lijuanae sp. nov. was described based on one adult and three nymphal fossils. The new adult specimen exhibits the diagnostic features of Cretodorus and possesses a unique number and arrangement of sensory pits in the pronotum: nine sensory pits on one side, with five sensory pits between median and pronotal carinae and four sensory pits between lateral carina and margin, which is consistent in the nymphs. We also conduct morphometric analyses of forewings of all known species of Cretodorus, demonstrating that morphometrics are effectively discriminative for identifying Cretodorus fossils featuring few longitudinal veins and minimal differences in venation. Additionally, we report the nymphal fossils of Mimarachnidae for the first time. Three nymphal fossils, preserved in the same piece of amber alongside the adult specimen, exhibit the same nodule pattern on the thoracic notum in dorsal view, suggesting a feature linking adult and nymph of Mimarachnidae. These new specimens show morphological characteristics of the different developmental stages of C. lijuanae sp. nov., increasing the diversity of the Mimarachnidae in mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar. The preservation of three nymphs of the same age with an adult in the same piece of amber likely indicates aggregation behaviour in Mimarachnidae.
An Exquisitely Preserved Tiny Bark‐gnawing Beetle (coleoptera: Trogossitidae) from Mid‐cretaceous Burmese Amber and the Phylogeny of Trogossitidae

Abstract:The first fossil representative of the cleroid family Trogossitidae is described from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Microtrogossita qizhihaoi Li & Cai gen. et sp. nov. is unique among Trogossitidae in the relatively widely separated procoxal and mesocoxal cavities, weakly asymmetrical antennal clubs, coarsely facetted eyes, coarse sculpture of dorsal and ventral surfaces of thorax in comparison with tiny body size, and the absence of spines along side margin of tibiae. Morphological characters of the fossil were analyzed together with representatives of 44 extant genera of Cleroidea (Peltidae, Lophocateridae, and Trogossitidae) in a matrix of 93 characters. Microtrogossita qizhihaoi was resolved as a member of Trogossitini within Trogossitidae. The tribal composition of Trogossitidae is discussed in light of our re-analysis of a previously published four-gene dataset under a site-heterogeneous model. The recently described lophocaterid Mesolophocateres pengweii Yu, Leschen & Slipinski syn. nov. from Burmese amber is suggested to be a junior synonym of Burmacateres longicoxa Kolibac & Peris.
