Abstract:ABSTRACT In Gulliver's Travels (1726) Swift presented different kinds of satire. These different kinds of satire divided the critics into groups with different points of view concerning the satirical tendencies in Gulliver's Travels. Swift concentrates on the inside of things rather than the outside; on actuality rather than illusion . It is important to note that Swift seized all the opportunities so as to direct his severe attack on different aspects of life. In Gulliver's Travels, there is emphasis laid on man's bad nature and his social role. His recognition of the defects in human nature leads him to depict human nature. Therefore, he presents the Yahoos as an embodiment of all the well-known human vices and follies. So, he ruthlessly satirizes bad elements in man's nature over which man has a full control. He believes that man is capable of keeping them under his control.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of a specific intervention on a particular outcome. Its primary objective is to examine a given intervention's impacts on a well-defined group. The analysis explores the employment of Satire by Jonathan Swift in his renowned literary masterpiece, Gulliver's Travels. Satire is an academic technique, authors employ to expose and criticize the illogical and immoral aspects of an individual or a society, employing comic elements, irony, exaggeration, or scorn. Gulliver's Travels effectively utilizes a range of literary tropes, such as Satire, skillfully conveyed through narration, setting, character development, and plot advancement. Jonathan Swift used many academic strategies in his satirical novel to create a backdrop combining utopia and dystopia elements. Additionally, he exploits certain character archetypes, such as a miser and tyrant figure, a moral touchstone, and a repulsive character, to effectively portray the desired character as typical. The deliberate employment of a first-person narrator is evident in Jonathan Swift's novel Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver's Travels is a notable piece of literature wherein Jonathan Swift skillfully uses the method of Satire to aptly criticize the prevailing concerns of corruption, vices, and societal follies. However, Swift's scholarly endeavors encompass analyzing diverse aspects of society to employ Satire to critique the political system and sociological framework. The author's work aims to clarify the adverse outcomes that arise from uncontrolled greed and despair, ultimately leading to the deterioration and demise of society.

Abstract:Most of the works of Literature contain the writers' ideas including their social criticism. To express them effectively, many writers use indirect methods to arouse the reader's sympathy and to avoid didactic writings. One of the indirect methods is satire in which the writers do not say what they really mean but the opposite. In this case, satire can be an essential device to bring about their thought. This thesis concerns with the study of satire in Jonathan Swift's novel Gulliver's Travels Through Gulliver'sTravels, Swift attempted to satirize the super-confident Eighteenth Century people who were too proud of the rapid scientific progress. Thus, it makes the thesis writer wants to know how Swift uses Gulliver to satirize the society in the Eighteenth Century and what is being satirized in Swift's Gulliver's Travels. In showing Swift's satire of the society condition, the discussion of the Lemuel Gulliver's voyages to four different lands conveys the relation with the England society. By doing the study, the writer of this thesis wants to show the way Swift uses Gulliver in satirizing the society and also to show the objects that is satirizing in his Gulliver's Travels. In order to be able to find out the answer, the thesis writer conducts an analysis by using literary approach and library research. Swift occupies Gulliver in four different voyages. The first voyage is to Lilliput, the land of little people which Swift`s satirizes the ?littleness? of human beings. The second to Brobdingnag, the land of giants, is the satire on the meanness of humanity. The third, to the flying island of Laputa, is satire on the scientists and philosophers. And the final journey to the strangest land of all, that of the Houyhnhnms which is the satire in the denunciation of human species. Based on the result of the analysis, it is concluded that Swift?s Gulliver?s Travels is ridiculing the English society in his time.

Abstract:Jonathan Swift’s novel,Gulliver’s Travels,was written in 1721,thirty years after the British Bourgeois Revolution.It is one of the first documents which give the critical eyes on modern politics.Part III &IV are the core of the whole novel,and the story of the country of the Houyhnhnms is always regarded as the social and political ideal of Swift.This paper argues that the society of the Houyhnhnms does not represent the ancient spirit,nor is the ideal society of Swift.In deed,it is a parody of some kinds of the theory of natural state in the 17 th century,while the true intention of Swift is to pointing out the difference between the ancient and the modern politics and its origins,and providing an imaginative litevary work aimed for the self-education of human being.

Abstract:Jonathan Swift is one of the most celebrated satirist writers in literature. His well-known "Gulliver's Travels", apart from being a serious human being criticism, contains many interesting ana unrecognized comments about medical and other scientific facts. Swift made what seems to be the first account of a dementing illness in the elderly; his description fits well with what we now know as Alzheimer's disease. He also described a condition now called synaesthesia, a very interesting phenomenon that may contribute to creativity. In this paper, we review aspects of his life and reveal these amazing descriptions as samples of Swift's extraordinary power of observation.

Abstract:The culture contradictions in two grotesque lands provide the whimsical experiences of the traveler. Swift explains the culture and politics in satiric way. He mocked England’s government and politics by describing the Lilliput and Borbingdang’s ruling. The people’s way of living expressed through their culture. The Lilliput was reversed from Borbingdang in all the ways. The Lilliputians has no reason, logic and justice in ruling. They followed certain culture in burial and in selecting official in the court which shows their stupidity. The Borbingdingians look for their country but didn’t had perfectness in anything. The Lilliputians were little but have a massive view for their living, while Borbingdangians were massive but little in their thoughts.

Abstract:From its inception in the seventeenth century, the Royal Society was no friend to poetry. The advancement of the new science, in the view of its champions, required the subordination of language to empirical observation, the unequivocal homage of inconstant words to the unchanging nature of things in themselves. Poets, needless to say, took a dim view of this development, as they staked their livelihood on the very malleability of language that the empiricists condemned. Satire provided sweet revenge: a team of scholars encountered by Swift’s Gulliver during his visit to the Academy of Lagado make themselves ridiculous by taking Thomas Sprat’s denunciations of figurai language at face value. Rather than risk the ambiguity and semantic slippage attendant on verbal expression, they have dispensed with words altogether and taken to communicating entirely with things, a collection of which they carry about with them in a handy satchel for deployment at academic meetings and cocktail parties.1

Abstract:Literature is all that is written in broad terms. Literary that delights the learned. Science literature is literature that gives knowledge primarily to the learned Linguistic history. There is no doubt that the meaning of the word 'Aṅkatam', which means sweet taste of fig buds in certain places in the literature, is the correct technique of saying 'Aṅkatam' which is still in use from the Sangam period to the present day. First of all, in today's world, crimes and grievances are indirectly ridiculed and ridiculed without any counter-opinions. Human society may have made great strides in understanding science. Why even set foot on the moon. Yet, the basic human feeling is one that stays with the mind forever with humor. When Mahatma Gandhi spoke about such humor, he once said that if there was no humor I would have committed suicide sometime in my life. Humor occupies an important and prominent place not only in individual human life but also in the film literature of life.

Abstract:The visual quality of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, together with its popular and folkloric ingredients, has greatly contributed to the novel’s immediate transmedial reception and was central to its success during the so-called “golden age” of visual satire in the British Isles. Starting with the end of the eighteenth century, caricaturists transformed Swift’s work into a symbol of society’s mechanisms and structures. Indeed, in its frequent nineteenth-century adaptations into graphic form, Gulliver’s Travels has been exploited to identify social or political identity and otherness, to express suspicion against any form of authority, and to undermine monologic perspectives on current political events.

Abstract:Abstract: Does Gulliver's apparent equiphilia (love for equines) at the conclusion of Jonathan Swift's satire signify madness or misanthropy? I say neither, and propose that the neighing narrator is a satirical figure encompassing the animal debate between Michel de Montaigne and René Descartes. Swift's satire, I argue, addresses the early-modern controversy over human-animal distinctions by dramatizing a profound skepticism toward human reason. Swift's stance is registered in a vacillation between literalization of human-animal conversations, lampooning Montaigne, and satirizing Cartesian mechanism. I conclude that the greatest paradox of Gulliver's Travels is that Swift's satirization of skepticism is an endorsement of skepticism itself.

Abstract:British contemporary writer Graham Swift's newly published novel Wish You Were Here is a work explicitly concerned with space. This is firstly exemplified in the narrative form wherein space manipulates the narrative order and disparate elements are juxtaposed side by side in a spatial design. In this Way, the trajectory of linear narrative is dislocated. Besides, space in the novel is not just as an external, physical space but also lived space that embodies the internal and mental state of characters. Swift's concern with space has something to do with the larger historical context. By connecting the local and the individual with the wider global issues, Swift lays bare the violence of capitalist production of space, and the adrift and lonely life lived by the marginalized.

Abstract:“Poetry is, at bottom, a criticism of life”, says Matthew Arnold. We know that literature is not only a faithful artistic representation of life but also a medicine which cures the maladies of society. The purpose of correcting the wrongs in society is taken by some litterateurs to be great responsibility. They cannot accept the wrong way life is going. That is why they try to amend the errors committed by people. This practice is seen mainly in satirical works. In all literatures of all ages, there are plenty of writers who satirises the unjust social life. Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales; Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock, An Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot; Dryden’s Absalom and Achitophel, The Medal, Mac Flecknoe; Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels — these are all satires representing critical commentaries on the follies and vices of the mentioned writers’ respective times. However, this trend of writing satires is not a new. If we dig deep into literary history we shall discover that this practice had been there also in ancient literary jargon. The names of Juvenal, Horace and so on may be referred to in this connection. In fact the later satirists carry deep influences from these classical writers who flourished during the reign of Augustus Caesar, the nephew of Julius Caesar. Among the notable literary figures who enlightened the age of Augustus Caesar in Rome, the one whose contribution is unavoidable is Juvenal. In this paper, we are going to have an analytical study on Juvenal’s Tenth Satire.

Abstract:In this article the author examines the uses of satire and its rhetorical devices, sarcasm and irony, in social research, analysing published research papers as well as drawing on her own autoethnographic data. In particular, she focuses on texts concerning discourses within the academy and the current predicament of the academic, each of which sets out to expose an aspect of the workings of power in institutions. While satire may be considered a narrative form, a means for and of representation, irony, as a rhetorical trope which exerts its effects through juxtaposition and the creation of incongruity, constitutes a potential analytical tool in social research, overturning expectations and operating within a ‘logic of discovery’. Satire therefore functions as a form of critical analysis while irony contributes to the development of theory and ‘paradigm innovation’.

A Study of some elements of feminism in Thomas Hardy's far from the madding crowd as reflected through Bathsheba's character

Abstract:This thesis is a study of some elements of feminism in Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd as reflected through Batsheba Everdene's character. The writer of this thesis is curious to find out some elements of feminism in this novel, and she is going to prove that there are some elements of feminism as reflected through the main female character's. In order to support the analysis of this thesis, the writer uses library research to find any related data including the ideal Victorian women, criticisms and feminist theories. She also uses a literary tool that is characterization, in order to have a better understanding of the main female character. She acts as though she were a " male " in the neighborhood. In other words, she tries hard to break the Victorian norms, in that she is welleducated, has a job as a manager of the large farm, she chooses her own husband, and she still has her authority in order to own the property after she gets married. Through the analysis of this thesis, the writer concludes that there are some elements of feminism reflected through Bathsheba Everdene's characters related to education, job or career and marriage.

Abstract:Abstract: Evidence suggests that Sylvia Plath encountered, paid attention to, and made use of eighteenth-century Augustan literature, but little scholarly attention has been paid to this territory of her reading. This article is primarily concerned with the complex (and at times reciprocal) relationship that exists between Plath's personal interest in Augustan literature and that literature's wider post-war critical reception. Looking at her annotated anthology of eighteenth-century verse (among other pieces of evidence), this article considers the ways in which Plath encountered and made sense of eighteenth-century Augustan literature, and then considers the extent to which that literature exerted a creative influence on Plath's own poetry. At the center of this discussion is "Gulliver," a direct response to Swift that, like so many of Plath's mock-heroic poems, is rarely examined either in itself or in relation to the mature poetry of Ariel .

Abstract:This study discusses Devide et Impera in the novel Gulliver’s Travels, written by Jonathan Swift and published in 1726. This research is motivated by the writers’ interest in knowing about the conflict between the Lilliput and Blefuscu countries. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method, and one of the significant theories used in this research is proposed by Morrock, who claims that there are four major tactics commonly used by those who make use of this Devide et Impera strategy. Seeing the divisions between the two countries, the reason is due to disagreements on how to crack eggs correctly. Emperor Liliput argues that the way to break eggs is with a sharp tip, while Blefuscu’s is different. As a result of these differences of opinion, in the end, it leads to an extraordinary conflict, namely a war that claims lives and weakens the economies of the two countries based on political strategy and political influence.

Abstract:Waterland, the novel published in 1983, establishes Swift's reputation in literary world. Critics who follow in the footsteps of Linda Hutcheon's earliest response to Waterland treat Swift's text as an example of what she calls "historiographic metafiction". However, Swift's emphasis on the differences between "artificial history" VS "natural history" and "history" VS "here and now" reveals his meditation on the problems of history as narrative, the narration of traumatic history in particular. In Waterland, Swift explores and exhorts the suitable ways of writing and documenting the traumatic past through rejecting the conventional forms of narrative, which with its teleological story is close to myth. Moreover, some features in narrative language can also be interpreted as symptom of traumatic dissociation on the part of the narrator.
