Abstract:This research investigated the effect of aging on the adhesion properties between asphalt and aggregate at the molecular level. Based on the molecular dynamics simulation method, the adhesion characteristics of asphalt component representative molecules and bulk asphalt with silica mineral aggregate before and after aging were evaluated in terms of adsorption energy and adhesion work, respectively. In addition, the simulation results were verified using a pull-off test. Results show that the adsorption energy increases after aging, and was most pronounced for the representative molecules of the asphaltene component. In bulk asphalt, the increase of large-mass molecules after aging led to an increase in its adhesion to mineral aggregate. The presence of water greatly weakened the adhesion strength between asphalt and mineral aggregate, and the negative effect of water on the adhesion strength between aged asphalt and mineral aggregate was severer. The pull-off test confirmed that aging enhanced the adhesion strength between asphalt and aggregate, but exacerbated the negative impact of water on the adhesion strength between asphalt and aggregate. The findings promote further understanding of the effect of aging on the adhesion properties of asphalt to mineral aggregate and the water damage mechanism of asphalt mixtures.

Abstract:Water damage is the primary cause of premature deterioration of asphalt pavement, leading to a decrease in its durability. Hence, it is essential to utilize an effective approach for quantifying water damage to extend the lifespan of roadways. Previous methodologies for evaluating the water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures were either less accurate or time-consuming. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the principles and factors that influence various laboratory and field test methods, as well as the integration of theoretical analysis and test methods for detecting water damage and quantitatively evaluating loose asphalt mixtures and compacted asphalt mixes using digital image processing technology. It also explores the microstructure change of the asphalt mixture at different stages of the process and the influence of water penetration on the inside of the material through the data collection of water damage images. Various image processing techniques, including visual assessment, monochrome image, grayscale image, colorful picture, and light reflection image, effectively provided scientific and precise evaluations of asphalt mixtures using advanced data analysis and image processing software. An optimal correlation was demonstrated between the boiling water test (BWT) and the rolling bottle test (RBT) of loose asphalt mixtures when recognizing color interference in grayscale image processing. Image-based direct tensile strength (DTS) evaluation revealed that the main variables affecting water resistance are adhesion and cohesion degradation. Image-based indirect tensile strength (ITS) tests explained a significant positive relationship between cohesion damage and tensile strength ratio (TSR). In contrast, the aggregate broken area exhibited a negative connection, highlighting its importance in assessing water resistance. Furthermore, the implementation of artificial intelligence can improve the accuracy of identifying asphalt adhesion to aggregate surfaces. This study presents a theoretical framework for rapidly determining water damage, scientifically evaluating asphalt materials, and establishing a more precise qualitative standard for designing and optimizing water damage-resistant materials in road construction.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement, a major type of road surface, may contain hazardous elements depending on its specific composition. A growing concern has developed regarding the potential leaching of these hazardous constituents from asphalt pavements, particularly when incorporating waste materials and additives. This study investigates the presence of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in leachates from six commonly employed asphalt paving materials. A comprehensive laboratory leaching experiment was conducted on three key sample scales: asphalt binder, asphalt mortar, and asphalt mixture. The impact of the leachates was assessed by the heavy metal pollution index and the toxic equivalency factor based on the benzo[ a ]pyrene equivalent concentration. The results reveal that leaching tests at the binder and mortar scales provided fundamental insights into leaching characteristics within a relatively short timeframe, while the mixture-scale test was more capable of representing pollutant leaching in near-true scenarios. In addition, the results indicate potential adverse health implications associated with the incorporation of hazardous waste, such as bottom ash, into asphalt pavement. These findings hold significant implications for promoting environmentally responsible practices of asphalt pavement.

Abstract:The pavement asphalt properties are susceptible to deterioration under environmental factors, and the deterioration product will affect its surrounding aqueous environment. For this reason, the idealized asphalt-aggregate mixture was treated with coupled temperature, ultraviolet and aqueous solutions based on self-made multifactorial coupled simulation device. Subsequently, the deterioration of asphalt chemical properties was analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and saturate-aromatic-resin-asphaltene tests. Meanwhile, the effect of environmental factors on leachate properties was explored based on organic matter contents and chemical elements. Based on that, the grey correlation method was adopted to correlate asphalt chemical properties and leachate properties. The results clearly showed that environmental factors increased the sulfoxide and carbonyl group content of asphalt and transformed the chemical components within it into polar substances. The asphalt chemical properties were gradually improved when coupling ultraviolet with sodium carbonate, sodium chloride and distilled water sequentially. Compared to neutral solution, alkaline solution exacerbated the effect of asphalt precipitates on leachate properties. The environmental factors increased the organic matter contents and chemical elements of leachate with time. The interaction mechanism between asphalt and aqueous environment involved the deterioration of asphalt properties caused by the presence of water, as well as the release of precipitates from aged asphalt into surrounding aqueous environment.

Leaching potential of metals and PAHs of asphalt rubber paving materials

Abstract:Asphalt rubber (AR), a waste-based paving binder prepared with waste tyre rubber and asphalt binder, may contain hazardous components that pose environmental risks when applied to the road surface. This study aims to quantify this concern by characterizing the leaching process of AR using a multi-scale experimental method. The effects of various experimental variables on the leaching process were determined, and the leaching of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were characterized at three scales, i.e., binder, mortar, and mixture. The results suggested that AR presents no significant leaching concerns under most conditions, but the leaching of metals from AR might pose risks to the aquatic environments in the areas with acid rain. Furthermore, the leachability of metals increases with service time due to the aging of asphalt binder. The findings of this study can contribute to a better understanding of the environmental performance of AR and help conduct AR construction and maintenance in a more sustainable manner.

Abstract:Acidity and alkalinity of water environments have been proven to influence the water stability of asphalt mixture. However, the relevant influencing mechanism still remains unclear. To fulfill this research gap, this study conducted a series of microscopic tests, aiming at unveiling the microscopic erosion mechanism of the water environment on the water stability of asphalt mixture for better moisture stability achieved. Specifically, the asphalt-aggregate interfacial transition zone (ITZ) samples were prepared by combining #70 asphalt with limestone and granite, respectively, which were then immersed in water solutions at 3 different pH levels (pH = 3.0, 7.0, and 11.0) for 7 days. The chemical composition and microstructure of the asphalt film on the surface of the ITZ samples pre and post-treatment were scrutinized using the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), while the development of microcracks at the asphalt-aggregate interface were identified and traced utilizing the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The test results indicate that after treatment with acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions, the asphalt film's surface is enriched with polar components such as asphaltenes, resins, and aromatic fractions. The migration of these polar components to the surface of the asphalt film reduces the adhesion between asphalt-aggregate, leading to the formation of microcracks at the asphalt-aggregate interface. The most severe crack development occurs in alkaline water environment, followed by acidic water environment. It is interestingly noted that the adhesion at the asphalt-granite interface is improved under the acidic environment. This improvement may be attributed to the covalent nature of silica, which hinders the adsorption of ions from acidic solution into the asphalt film. This hindrance effectively prevents water intrusion at the asphalt-aggregate interface, thereby reducing the adhesion loss. These findings can help elucidate the mechanism of water damage in asphalt pavement exposed to real-world conditions and enhance its water stability with effective countermeasures proposed.

Abstract:Contaminant leaching from asphalt pavements poses a significant environmental concern, potentially damaging soil and groundwater quality. The growing interest in incorporating recycled materials in asphalt pavements has further raised concerns over the potential environmental hazards due to contaminant leaching. Consequently, this paper offers a comprehensive review of the literature over the past three decades structured into six sections: groundwater contamination via leaching, methodologies for evaluating leaching, analysis of contaminants, contaminants and leaching from road materials incorporating recycled waste, other factors affecting leaching of pollutants from asphalt pavements, and mathematical models to predict leaching from asphalt pavements. Despite the importance of addressing leaching issues, there is a lack of standardised leaching tests and guidelines specific to asphalt materials, limited attention to evaluating contaminants beyond heavy metals and PAHs in asphalt leachates, insufficient understanding of optimal instrument parameters for asphalt leachate analysis, and a scarcity of mathematical models to predict future leaching potential.
Contribution of Asphalt Products to Total and Bioaccessible Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:Soil-like waste products such as construction and demolition debris fines, street sweepings and catch basin sediments often contain elevated concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) resulting from anthropogenic activities. Previous research suggested that small pieces of asphalt may contribute to PAHs in these wastes. The objective of this research was to investigate this idea by analyzing total PAHs concentrations in various asphalt products to assess their contribution to PAHs in these wastes. Five types of asphalt products (new and used asphalt shingles, new asphalt pavement, reclaimed asphalt pavement [RAP], and bitumen) were selected. PAHs concentrations were relatively low in most of the asphalt products except for RAP. The benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-equivalent) concentrations in two RAP samples exceeded both Florida and EPA risk thresholds. PAHs bioaccessibility tests were conducted using a mild solvent extraction method on asphalt product samples of several different samples sizes (< 0.5 cm and < 250 µm); bioaccessibility was measured at < 10% for most samples. When asphalt products were mixed with clean sand to mimic soil-like waste, PAHs concentrations and bioaccessibility for most products decreased with decreasing asphalt percentages. Though PAHs sources for asphalt products are petrogenic, the few detected diagnostic ratios did not indicate a clear petrogenic source for these materials, suggesting that caution be taken when using diagnostic ratios for source apportionment related to these materials.
Rheological Behaviors and Damage Mechanism of Asphalt Binder under the Erosion of Dynamic Pore Water Pressure Environment

Abstract:Asphalt binder plays an important role in the overall resistance of asphalt mixture to the moisture damage induced by a dynamic pore water pressure environment. This study evaluates the moisture sensitivity of asphalt binder from the perspective of rheological behaviors using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and the bending beam rheometer (BBR) methods at high, medium, and low temperatures. The damage mechanism is further discussed quantitatively based on the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) method. The results indicate that a longer conditioning duration is beneficial for asphalt binder to recover its adhesion at 60 °C in multiple stress creep recover (MSCR) tests, but the increasing pore water pressure magnitude of 60 psi held an opposite effect in this study. The asphalt binder's fatigue life at 20 °C in linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests decreased obviously with conditioning duration and environmental severity, but the reducing rate gradually slowed down, while the groups of 50 psi—4000 cycles and 60 psi—4000 cycles held a comparable erosion effect. Both the stiffness and relaxation moduli at −12 °C in the BBR tests exhibited an obvious decreasing trend with conditioning duration and environmental severity. The erosion effect on the asphalt binder was gradually enhanced, but it also exhibited a slightly more viscous performance. Water conditioning induced several obvious characteristic peaks in the FTIR absorbance spectra of the asphalt binder. The functional group indexes presented a trend of non-monotonic change with conditioning duration and environmental severity, which made the asphalt binder show complicated rheological behaviors, such as non-monotonic variations in performance and the abnormal improving effect induced by dynamic pore water pressure conditioning.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement is inevitably exposed to sunlight and different water environment during the service life, and the environment changes have caused the asphalt to be aged under the more complex environment such as more severe ultraviolet (UV) radiations, acid rain, or deicing salt conditions, however, the ageing mechanism and impact of coupled water and UV radiation is still not clear. In order to evaluate the coupling impact of different water environment (salt, acid) and UV radiation on the rheological properties and microstructure of asphalt material, short-term aged Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) samples were further aged in UV and various water environment to simulate the UV and acid rain or salt condition, the Dynamic Shear Rheological (DSR) test, Bending Beam Rheological (BBR) test, SARA (saturates, aromatics, resin, and asphaltene) four-component analysis test and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) tests were carried out. The results show that the coupling of different water environments and UV radiation accelerated the ageing of asphalt, which leads to the decrease of saturated, aromatic and resin content, the increase of asphaltene, and the enhancement of absorption peaks of carbonyl and sulfoxide groups. The result also found that shorter wavelength UV radiation has a severer effect on asphalt ageing under the same UV radiation level.<b>Highlights</b>UV and different water environment on asphalt ageing were investigated.UV and water ageing reduced the low temperature cracking resistance.UV and water ageing reduced the light component of asphalt and increased the heavy component of asphaltene.Shorter wavelength of UV have a server impact on asphalt ageing.

Abstract:Porous asphalt pavements and water-retentive asphalt pavements are widely used because of their ability to infiltrate both rainfall and stormwater runoff. There is very limited information available to assist designers of porous asphalt pavement systems to be installed on sloping sub-catchments. This is because the infiltration performance of these systems has only been investigated experimentally for horizontal pavements, and their performance on sloping terrains has only been investigated theoretically. This experimental study investigates the relationship between rainfall intensity, pavement slope, runoff and infiltration rates for dense-graded asphalt, porous asphalt and water-retentive asphalt concrete pavements. Three rates of simulated rainfall were applied to porous, water-retentive and dense-graded asphalt specimens set at three different pavement slopes, namely 0°, 3° and 5°. The relationship between the porosity and permeability of the porous asphalt pavements was also determined. A porosity of 20% resulted in a permeability of greater than 1 mm/s. It was found that the porous asphalt specimens had excellent runoff retention and infiltration rates at all slopes. The water-retentive asphalt specimens also produced good infiltration rates at horizontal slopes, but these decreased at higher pavement slopes.

Abstract:Pervious Paving Systems (PPS) are part of a sustainable approach to drainage in which excess surface water is encouraged to infiltrate through their structure, during which potentially toxic elements, such as metals and hydrocarbons are treated by biodegradation and physical entrapment and storage. However, it is not known where in the PPS structure these contaminants accumulate, which has implications for environmental health, particularly during maintenance, as well as consequences for the recycling of material from the PPS at the end-of-life. A 1 m³ porous asphalt (PA) PPS test rig was monitored for 38 months after monthly additions of road sediment (RS) (367.5 g in total) and unused oil (430 mL in total), characteristic of urban loadings, were applied. Using a rainfall simulator, a typical UK rainfall rate of 15 mm/h was used to investigate its efficiency in dealing with contamination. Water quality of the effluent discharged from the rig was found to be suitable for discharge to most environments. On completion of the monitoring, a core was taken down through its surface, and samples of sediment and aggregate were taken. Analysis showed that most of the sediment remained in the surface course, with metal levels lower than the original RS, but higher than clean, unused aggregate or PA. However, even extrapolating these concentrations to 20 years' worth of in-service use (the projected life of PPS) did not suggest their accumulation would present an environmental pollution risk when carrying out maintenance of the pavement and also indicates that the material could be recycled at end-of-life.

Abstract:<p>Solid wastes have been widely applied in porous asphalt pavement, but some of them may contain pollutants. Whether their leachate during rainfall events poses a threat to nearby watersheds has not received enough attention. Based on the laboratory rainfall and infiltrate test, this study evaluated the leachate risks of fine solid wastes in porous asphalt mixture (PA). Based on the runoff pollution characteristics in Shanghai, China, the purification performance of PA with diatomite filler was explored. The results showed that a small amount of Al and Fe in solid waste fillers might infiltrate during intensive rainfall. The diatomite filler could improve pollutants removal rates via physical filtration and selective chemical adsorption effects. The correlations between rainfall characteristics and the removal rates were further developed, which indicated the increase of rainfall time and intensity adversely affected the removal rates. The composition of PA for different runoff pollution characteristics was proposed as well.</p>

Ecotoxicological risk of asphalt pavements to aquatic animals associated with pollutant leaching

Abstract:Contaminants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be released from asphalt pavement and transported through stormwater runoff to nearby water bodies, leading to water pollution and potential harm to living aquatic animals. This study characterizes the heavy metal and PAH leaching from various asphalt paving materials and their potential ecotoxicological effects on zebrafish Danio rerio. Artificial runoffs were prepared in the laboratory concerning the effects of water, temperature, and traffic. The concentrations of heavy metals and PAHs in the leachates were quantified, while the toxicity assessment encompassed mortality, metal stress, PAH toxicity, inflammation, carcinogenicity, and oxidative damage. Gene expressions of related proteins or transcription factors were assessed, including metallothionines, aryl hydrocarbon receptors, interleukin-1β, interleukin-10, nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor-α, tumor suppressor p53, heat shock protein 70, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The findings demonstrate that leachates from asphalt pavements containing waste bottom ash, crumb rubber, or specific chemicals could induce notable stress and inflammation responses in zebrafish. In addition, potential carcinogenic effects and the elevation of ROS were identified within certain treatment groups. This study represents the first attempt to assess the ecotoxicity of pavement leachates employing a live fish model, thereby improving the current understanding of the environmental impact of asphalt pavements.

Abstract:The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from asphalt during construction processes presents substantial risks to human health and the environment. To advance sustainable transportation development, this review offers a comprehensive study of the methods for characterization, release characteristics, influencing factors, release mechanisms, and environmental impacts of asphalt VOCs. At present, research has been conducted on characterization methods, component characteristics, influencing factors, and environmental and health risks. The findings indicate that gas chromatography–mass spectrometry is the most comprehensive method for characterizing asphalt VOCs. Asphalt VOCs mainly comprise alkanes, aromatics, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Factors including the temperature, asphalt source, and ultraviolet radiation can all affect the release characteristics of asphalt VOCs. Elevated VOC levels contribute to the photochemical production of ozone and fine particulate matter, exacerbating air pollution and climate change. Additionally, specific asphalt VOCs, including benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pose health risks to humans. While progress has been achieved in the current research, challenges persist in quantifying VOCs, assessing their environmental impacts and health risks, and implementing effective mitigation technologies. To address these challenges, future research should focus on establishing asphalt VOC fingerprints, quantitative methods, evaluation criteria, material innovation, optimization of construction processes, exposure assessment, and collaborative solution implementation.

Lead and Zinc Removal with Storage Period in Porous Asphalt Pavement

Abstract:Porous asphalt pavements have been used as an effective technique to overcome road runoff challenges, and to improve efficiency of rainwater utilisation in urban areas. Using porous asphalt pavements with reservoir storage and harvesting facilities is an important consideration for the future. This study monitored changes in water quality indicators, such as pH, conductivity, and concentrations of lead and zinc, for water stored in porous asphalt pavement models with basalt-, limestone- and 'basalt+limestone'-filled reservoir structures. The research discusses findings over a 696-h storage period following artificial rainfall. Total lead and zinc concentrations were remarkably reduced throughout the initial flush, showing, on average, reductions of 90% and 80.5%, respectively. This pattern was consistent throughout the storage period, producing average reductions in lead and zinc of 99.98% and 79%, respectively, over 696 h. Conductivity and pH levels increased in all pavement models after the 696-h storage. The results obtained confirmed the potential of using porous asphalt pavements with reservoir structures to remove heavy metals from road runoff. This can be applied to future research on the removal mechanisms of porous asphalt pavements in relation to heavy metals in road runoff.

Abstract:When exposed to sun radiation and heat, asphalt binders age, resulting in reduced flexibility, cracking, and pavement failure. Given the increasing demands of traffic, environmental concerns, and resource scarcity, highway agencies and researchers are actively seeking solutions that meet performance requirements and demonstrate awareness of using non-renewable resources. Epoxy asphalt (EA) promotes sustainability concepts due to its production at significantly lower mixing and compaction temperatures, enhanced durability, improved serviceability, reduced maintenance needs, and successful recycling and reuse in hot asphalt mixtures. Crumb rubber, a widely recognized recycled waste tire material, is considered a viable option for promoting sustainability and enhancing asphalt binder properties. This study aims to enhance the durability and long-term performance of asphalt binders by utilizing sustainable materials. Six types of asphalt binders were employed: PG 67-22 base asphalt binder; styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified PG 76-22 and PG 88-22H (3.5% and 7.0% dosage rates, respectively); a hybrid PG 76-22CS-modified asphalt binder prepared with SBS and crumb rubber modifiers; and 25EAB and 50EAB epoxy-modified asphalt binders prepared at 25 and 50% dosage rates, respectively. Results indicate that the sustainable asphalt binders PG 76-22CS, 25EAB, and 50EAB demonstrated comparable or superior performance compared to SBS-modified asphalt binders, as measured by rutting and fatigue factors. Additionally, epoxy asphalt binders had better anti-aging and cracking resistance, as shown by the outcomes of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and linear amplitude sweep tests, respectively. This study contributes valuable insights into the potential of sustainable materials to enhance the overall performance and resilience of asphalt binders.

Abstract:The microstructure of asphalt affects the micro-mechanical properties. In this study, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the surface elastic modulus and nanohardness of asphalt binder. Relevant mechanical indexes were quantitatively evaluated by contact mechanical model. Five types of asphalts, including different grades, oil sources, and before and after modification, were selected as test objects, and the effects of asphalt binder type, aging, water, and anti-stripping agent on the asphalt micromechanics were explored. The results showed that the micromechanical properties of asphalt binder are affected by grade, oil source, and modification. The aging resistance of modified asphalt binder is better than that of unmodified asphalt binder. Water immersion reduces the surface micromechanical properties of the asphalt binder. The effect of the anti-stripping agent on the modified asphalt binder is greater than that of the unmodified asphalt binder.

Abstract:In this study, different surface energy parameters of three aggregates i.e. granite, diorite and limestone, and ten types of asphalts along-with their aging versions were measured using surface free energy theory by contact angle method. The water resistance of asphalt and asphalt-water aggregate systems was calculated in terms of stripping work. It was found that with extending aging duration, the ratio of the surface free energy component increases, resulting in greater stripping work between asphalt and aggregate. It was confirmed from Fourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy characterization that with the aging of asphalt, carbonyl and sulfoxide functionalities increased gradually which in turn increased the polar component of asphalt, enhancing its vulnerability towards water, resulting in higher stripping off of asphalt from the aggregate with low water resistance. This effect was greatly minimized by using carbon-carbon double bond rich ZQ172 silane as a coupling agent and modifier of the aggregate, attributed to decreased polarity of the aggregate after modification. The current study based on the results of stripping of asphalt in terms of water resistance, can be of great help in selection of asphalt and suitable modifier for industrial and practical applications.
