The Influence of Background Music Popularity on Consumer Online Shopping Behavior: A Model Analysis

Abstract:With the popularity of online shopping, online e-commerce is paying more attention to the impact of sensory marketing on consumer behavior. Previous studies suggest that music plays a significant role in enhancing the online shopping experience for consumers. However, the specific patterns of consumer impulse that music induces are yet to be fully discovered. Therefore, the study aims to explore the influence of music popularity on online shopping behavior in reference to the familiarity on emotion regulation. The results can create a better auditory environment for users' shopping experience and give a guidance for merchants to choose music that fits their brand positioning.MethodThirty participants (15 females) between the ages of 19 and 33 (M = 23.8, SD = 3.2) were recruited and all had years of online shopping experience. Participants were evenly assigned to three groups(no-music group, non-pop music group, and pop music group). The task scenario of participants is to buy a pair of sports shoes, so we simulated the current mainstream e-commerce shopping website to make online shopping pages of sports shoes. We first got 50 popular and 50 non-popular songs based on popularity on the charts of various music platforms. Then 10 of each the most popular and the least popular songs were selected from each of the two groups based on user feedback. Participants were asked to browse eight goods while listening to music in a quiet indoor environment. In terms of objective data collection, eye tracker was used to record participants' browsing time, browsing track and focusing position. After that, we used a questionnaire to collect the subjective evaluation. The questionnaire mainly includes three parts: recording emotions before shopping, recording behaviors during shopping (direct purchase, add shopping cart, share and collection), and recording experiences after shopping (ranking of purchase intention, emotions and music feelings). Finally, we conducted a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews to improve the experimental design.ResultsA t-test of the experimental data revealed that the duration of participant browsing markedly increased when shopping with music, in comparison to shopping without music (p<0.05). Compared with non-pop music, the subjects were more familiar with pop music and listened to it for a longer time. During the experience with popular music, the emotional arousal of the participants significantly increased in the shopping context (p<0.05). More precisely, the heightened shopping excitement contributed to an elevated rate of adding items to the cart and sharing these selections.ConclusionOur research shows that music popularity significantly influences online consumer behavior. Specifically, in terms of the connection between music types and shopping experience, pop music first increases users' attention to goods. In addition, familiar music enhanced the arousal dimension of mood, thus promoting the arousal of desire to buy. These insights enhance our comprehension of the strategic use of background music in e-commerce shopping contexts. Based on the conclusions of the research, a better auditory experience can be created for users in the shopping scene in the future. In terms of business application and marketing strategy, it can also guide merchants to strategically use music to influence mood changes and promote product consumption.
The Effect of Congruity Between Background Music Language and Brand Culture on Consumer Behavior

Abstract:Numerous research have explored how musical elements affect consumer behavior in the retail scenario. But this claim has not been fully proven in the online shopping scenario, which has become one of the current mainstream consumption methods. Some researchers have stressed the value of musical congruity, the majority of their discussions have focused on the structural characteristics (rhythm, volume, genre, etc.) or affective characteristics (style, familiarity, valence, etc.), and the cultural characteristics (nation, territory, language, etc.) of music seem to be less discussed. This study focuses on the different music languages to explore the influence of the context effect brought by the cultural characteristics of music on consumer behavior. Language variations in music are primarily represented in the lyrics. The study aims to explore how music enhances the online shopping experience by influencing users' cognitive and emotional responses. It also provides guidance on music selection for e-commerce brands to use music strategically to promote goods consumption.In this study, we simulated the current mainstream e-commerce shopping websites to make online shopping pages of sneakers and selected the music (music with Chinese lyrics, music with English lyrics) on the mainstream music platform charts as experimental materials. The experiment recruited 30 participants (15 females; all of them have online shopping experience); they were divided into three groups (no music, music with Chinese lyric, music with English lyric) and asked to choose a pair of sneakers for themselves from randomly given goods (Chinese brands *8, European and American brands *8) under different background music. We captured the participants' browsing duration, trajectory, and focus position with the eye tracker. Participants' cognitive responses (product purchase intention ranking, product evaluation, music experience), emotional response (PAD emotion), and final behavioral response (direct purchase, shopping cart addition, sharing, collection) were collected through questionnaires.According to the experimental data's T-test, from the perspective of brand, when the music language and brand culture are consistent, the sharing rate of goods will increase. From the perspective of music, goods that have the same nation with background music will get a higher share rate. Compared with the environment without music, the user's pleasure and arousal are significantly improved under both Chinese songs and European and American songs.Our research shows that congruity between music language and brand culture leads to higher levels of pleasure and significantly affects online consumer behavior. When the music culture is consistent with the brand, the rate at which consumers share the goods increases. The pleasant user experience brought by musical congruity increases consumers' evaluation of the cognitive response of the product, thus positively affecting consumers' purchase intention. The experimental results provide new insights into music selection in the online shopping scene in the field of auditory marketing. It enriches the existing literature on musical congruity and cultural characteristics.
The Cross‐modal Interaction Between Sound Frequency and Color Saturation on Consumer's Product Size Perception, Preference, and Purchase

Abstract:Extant literature has documented the direct effects of both sound frequency and color saturation on the perceived size of products. However, the cross-modal interaction effect of the two on size perception is yet unknown. Through three studies, this paper proposes that the effect of sound frequency on the perceived size of product is moderated by that product's own color saturation, and this further had downstream effects on consumers' product preference and purchase when they possess predetermined product usage goals toward bigger/smaller sizes. Study 1 found behavioral evidence that only when the color of the product is in high saturation can the sound frequency significantly influence the perceived size of the product, with low (vs. high) frequency leading to larger (vs. smaller) perceived size. When the product's color is in low saturation, the effect of sound frequency on perceived size disappears. Study 2 adopted the event-related potential technique and found that high (vs. low) saturation elicited higher arousal (mirrored by P300 amplitudes). Sound frequency is first moderated by color saturation and was then mediated by arousal to affect the perceived product size. The above results were also replicated in the field (Study 3). Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Computational aesthetics has become an active research field in recent years, but there have been few attempts in computational aesthetic evaluation of logos. In this article, we restrict our study on black-and-white logos, which are professionally designed for name-brand companies with similar properties, and apply perceptual models of standard design principles in computational aesthetic evaluation of logos. We define a group of metrics to evaluate some aspects in design principles such as balance, contrast, and harmony of logos. We also collect human ratings of balance, contrast, harmony, and aesthetics of 60 logos from 60 volunteers. Statistical linear regression models are trained on this database using a supervised machine-learning method. Experimental results show that our model-evaluated balance, contrast, and harmony have highly significant correlation of over 0.87 with human evaluations on the same dimensions. Finally, we regress human-evaluated aesthetics scores on model-evaluated balance, contrast, and harmony. The resulted regression model of aesthetics can predict human judgments on perceived aesthetics with a high correlation of 0.85. Our work provides a machine-learning-based reference framework for quantitative aesthetic evaluation of graphic design patterns and also the research of exploring the relationship between aesthetic perceptions of human and computational evaluation of design principles extracted from graphic designs.

Abstract:With the change in consumers' consumption concepts, the traditional marine brand image lacks professionalism and diversity in the new media environment, which is not in line with the characteristics of new media information dissemination.The development of computer-aided design technology and multimedia technology broadens the ideas for marine brand image optimization.Therefore, this paper constructs a marine brand image perception model based on network text mining to understand the consumers' emotional perception of the corporate brand image from multiple aspects.The optimization of brand image is realized through an intelligent computer-aided design model.The experimental results show that the marine brand image perception model based on network text mining can effectively mine consumers' perceived emotions and recognition of the brand image.The intelligent optimization model of marine brand image perception based on visual communication can optimize the brand image according to the results of emotional analysis.The survey results show that consumers have a higher degree of recognition of the optimized brand image and deepen their cognition of corporate exclusivity, which improves the positive perceived emotion of the marine brand image.

Abstract:Intel and Nokia’s success in sound branding encouraged followers toimplement this branding strategy. This study aims to explore the effects ofsound stimuli applied in branding. A questionnaire survey was conductedto measure consumers’ perception towards sound stimuli, and its influencetowards brand preference. Consumers’ perception towards sound stimuliis further examined to identify its influences on attitude towards the brand,brand awareness with brand association, and qualitative perception. Brandloyalty and preference are confirmed to have consequential influences fromthe antecedents: attitude towards the brand, brand awareness with brandassociation, and qualitative perception.Findings of this study suggest that sound trademarks should becarefully selected and designed to help consumers remember the brandand elicit positive awareness, association, attitude and perception. Incontrast, slogan-alone sound trademarks, especially those with ambiguousmeaning slogans, may lead to negative attitudes and preferences.

Impact of Interaction Effects between Visual and Auditory Signs on Consumer Purchasing Behavior Based on the AISAS Model

Abstract:This study, based on the AISAS model, explores the impact of the interaction effect between visual and auditory signals on consumer purchase behavior. Using experimental methods, 120 participants were randomly assigned to four different visual and auditory signal combinations, and their purchase intentions and actual purchase behavior were measured. The results show that the interaction effect between visual and auditory signals has a significant impact on both purchase intentions and actual purchase behavior, and there is a significant positive relationship. Specifically, when visual and auditory signals are mutually consistent, consumers have the highest purchase intentions and actual purchase behavior; when both visual and auditory signals are absent, consumers have the lowest purchase intentions and actual purchase behavior; when either the visual or auditory signal is missing, consumers’ purchase intentions and actual purchase behavior are between the two extremes. This study provides a new perspective for understanding consumers’ decision-making processes in multi-sensory environments and offers valuable insights for the development of marketing strategies.

Abstract:Brand extension typically has two strategies: brand name extension (BN) and brand logo extension (BL). The current study explored which strategy (BN or BL) better enhanced the success of dissimilar brand extension and product promotion in enterprises. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate electrophysiological processes when subjects evaluated their acceptance of the brand extension using a combined picture of S1 and S2. S1 was a famous brand presented by two identity signs (brand name and brand logo). S2 was a picture of an extension product that belonged to a dissimilar product category than S1. The behavior data showed that BL was more acceptable than BN in the dissimilar brand extension. The neurophysiology process was reflected by a less negative N2 component and a larger P300 component in the BL than in the BN. We suggested that N2 reflected a whole conflict between the brand-product combination and the long-term memory and that P300 could be regarded as the reflection of the categorization process in the working memory.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to investigate whether visual technologies can influence consumer brand purchase intentions by altering the forms of consumer association, attention, and emotion. The research employs traditional quantitative research methods and collected a total of 156 valid questionnaires from Chinese consumers. The study findings indicate that association, attention, and emotion all positively influence consumer purchase intent. These results suggest that brands can enhance their brand communication by investing in visual marketing, thereby winning higher purchase intent from consumers. It confirmed the impact of corporate visual brand communication based on new media forms on Chinese consumers' purchase intentions and established that association, attention, and emotion are the key influencing factors. It enriched the research on brand communication in China and provided a brand communication lean management approach.

Abstract:Sensory marketing is a critical tool for product merchandising. However, there is still a lack of in-depth research on the relationship between sensory elements and the role of sensory elements on consumer perception and behavior, making it difficult for retailers to integrate various sensory elements effectively. This research was conducted to examine the relationship between visual stimuli and odor, and the effects of sensory elements on mental imagery, odor perception, and behavior. Taking aromatic product merchandising as an example, in study 1, odor-related visual elements in advertising were extracted and categorized into two factors: concreteness and decoration elements. In study 2, a laboratory experiment was conducted to uncover differences in the impact of two visual factors on mental imagery. In addition, the facilitating role of mental imagery in enhancing the pleasantness of odor and purchase intention and the partial mediation of pleasantness of odor were also identified. This study holds both theoretical and practical implications in multi-sensory marketing.

Small sounds, big impact: sonic logos and their effect on consumer attitudes, emotions, brands and advertising placement

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how sonic logos, despite their brief exposure time, resonate with consumers’ emotions and attitudes in a manner that until now has been attributed to only longer background music in advertising. The moderating role of sonic logo placement within the ad (beginning versus ending) and the mediating role of emotion felt after exposure to the brand and advertisement are also explored. Design/methodology/approach An expansion on sonic logo research is completed through two experiments testing nine hypotheses. A pretest is also conducted to create two orthogonal sonic logos (sad sonic logo and happy sonic logo) which are then used in the two experiments. Findings Participants had higher attitude scores for an advertisement that had a happy sonic logo over the ad that had a sad sonic logo. These consumer attitudes are mediated by emotion felt because of the exposure to the brand and advertisement and are moderated by placement of the sonic logo within the ad. Placement drove more positive consumer attitudes of a sad sonic logo at the beginning and a happy sonic logo at the end of the advertisement. Practical implications Given the short nature of a sonic logo, sonic logo placement in the advertisement is shown to change consumer perceptions. This effect uncovers an important aspect of placement of the sonic logo in the advertisement which gives practitioners a means of application. Furthermore, consumer emotions drive these strong attitudes despite the short exposure times of the sonic logo. Originality/value This paper expands upon the limited sonic logo research and shows how the short exposure time of a sonic logo can have the same emotional qualities as long-form music, previously reserved for background music in advertising. In addition, by uncovering the mediating relationship of emotion felt after exposure to the brand and advertisement, it is shown how these short audio branding elements can help shape emotion and consumer attitude toward brands. Finally, altering placement of the sonic logo can enhance consumer attitudes of the advertisement and brand.

The Synergistic Effect Between Corporate Image and Product’s Superior Benefits：a Stereotype Content Model Approach

Abstract:Models of social perception in social psychology can help our understanding of consumers’ perception and relation with brands. Consumers’ relationships with brands sometimes resemble people’s relationships among themselves. It is thus speculated that the Stereotype Content Model (SCM) on how social perception works would possibly apply to brand perception. Few studies, however, have investigated the antecedent variables of the different dimensions of brand perception at the corporate and product levels, as well as their interaction mechanism. This research explored the possible antecedent roles of corporate image and product’s superior benefits in brand perception. We further hypothesized a synergistic effect of corporate image and product’s superior benefits on purchase intention, with brand admiration playing a mediating role. In Experiment 1, participants were randomly assigned to a 2(Corporate image: ability vs. trustworthiness) × 2(Product’s superior benefits: utilitarian vs. hedonic) design, with brand perception and purchase intention as dependent variables, and brand admiration as the mediating variable. A total of 120 (112 valid) MBA students participated in this experiment. Following the methods in previous research, we manipulated corporate image and product’s superior benefits. Participants were then asked to complete the ratings of brand perception, brand admiration, and purchase intention. In Experiment 2, participants were randomly assigned to a 2 (Perceived risk: low vs. high) × 2 (Corporate image: ability vs. trustworthiness) × 2 (Product’s superior benefits: utilitarian vs. hedonic) design with identical dependent variables in Experiment 1. The 200 (117 valid) undergraduates were told that they were in one of two beverages purchase scenarios. In the low-risk scenario, participants imagined themselves purchasing beverages for home consumption. In the high-risk scenario, participants imagined themselves purchasing beverages to take to dinner at good friends’ parties. The results of Experiment 1 showed an interaction between corporate image and product’s superior benefits on the purchase intention. Specifically, when corporate image was ability-based, product’s superior hedonic (vs. utilitarian) benefits led to higher purchase intention. When corporate image was trustworthiness-based, product’s superior utilitarian (vs. hedonic) benefits led to higher purchase intention. Moreover, this synergistic effect was mediated by brand admiration. Experiment 2 investigated the moderating role of perceived risk in the synergistic effect between corporate image and product’s superior benefits. Results showed that perceived risk moderated the interaction effect between corporate image and product’s superior benefits on purchase intention. More specifically, when perceived risk was low, there was a synergistic effect between corporate image and product’s superior benefits on purchase intention. However, when perceived risk was high, there was a congruency effect of corporate image and product’s superior benefits on purchase intention. This paper provides a new perspective by probing into the antecedent variables of brand perception with the Stereotype Content Model (SCM). Moreover, this research investigates the mechanism causing the synergistic effect by adopting “the complementarity of competence-warmth perception” as theory framework. Finally, our research provides insightful implications on how to achieve a synergistic promoting effect of corporate image strategy and product benefits strategy, and beyond.

Vividly Warm: the Color Saturation of Logos on Brands' Customer Sensitivity Judgment

Abstract:Colors play an essential role in brand image, especially in brand logos. The extant research has mainly focused on the hue and ignoring the saturation. The current research has provided a new insight that logos with high saturated colors could help brands to increase intimacy with customers and further benefit the brand image. A series of studies tested the effect of color saturation on the brand's customer sensitivity. Study 1 showed that shoes with the high saturated logo were evaluated more comfortable than those with low saturated logo. Study 2 repeated this effect and found that perceived closeness mediated this effect. Study 3 revealed that logo shapes moderated this effect. Specifically, the effect of color saturation on the brand's customer sensitivity judgment only existed in circular logos. Study 4 showed that brand origins moderated this effect. The color saturation effect on purchase intentions reversed for non-local brands. The present research extends the exploration of color saturation on consumer behaviors and provides practical implications for brands to choose the right logo color.
Does music really work? The two-stage audiovisual cross-modal correspondence effect on consumers’ shopping behavior

Abstract:In this research, we explore the impacts of cross-modal correspondence between sound frequency and color lightness on consumers' shopping behavior. Compared to previous studies that relied on a stable single-stage information environment, our study is based on a two-stage (i.e., elimination and choice stages) cognitive model to account for the dynamic cross-modal correspondence effect on shopping behavior. After conducting two laboratory experiments and one field experiment, we find that although consumers tend to pay more attention to light (vs. dark) products in the high (vs. low)-frequency sound condition in the elimination stage, this effect is less salient at the choice stage. We further find that consumer involvement acts as a moderator. Specifically, the correspondence effect is attenuated for highly involved consumers.

The Differential Interaction of Auditory and Visual Advertising Elements with Chinese and English

Abstract:Multimedia advertisements often contain nonverbal auditory elements, such as music and sound effects, and nonverbal visual elements, such as images and logos. On the one hand, these elements can have the unintended negative effect of interfering with the processing of the verbal ad copy. Two experiments demonstrate that auditory elements interfere more with the learning of and cognitive responding to English ad copy than with Chinese ad copy, and vice versa for visual elements. On the other hand, auditory and visual elements have the intended positive effect of facilitating ad copy recall when they are reinstated as part of an integrated marketing campaign or as a recall cue in an advertising tracking study. A third experiment demonstrates that auditory elements are better retrieval cues for English than for Chinese ad copy, and vice versa for visual elements. The authors discuss implications of these cross-linguistic differences for the effective design of multimedia communications, integrated marketing campaigns, advertising tracking studies, and cross-cultural research.

The Impacts of Logo Dynamism and Product Types on Brand Market Performance

Abstract:This study investigates the interactive effects of brand logo dynamism and product types—specifically, hedonic and utilitarian—on market performance. Mixed methods are employed, including a pilot study that analyzes the association between logo dynamism and product types from the most valuable brands on Forbes’ list, an event study of abnormal stock returns caused by logo-dynamic changes in the Hong Kong stock market, and two experiments. The results reveal that hedonic products with high-dynamic logos and utilitarian products with low-dynamic logos exhibit better market performance. Quality inference, which is based on information processing and inference theory, mediates this effect. These results provide a better understanding of the role of quality inference in logo design effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of designing logos that appeal to customers’ needs and expectations.
The Visual Asymmetry Effect: An Interplay of Logo Design and Brand Personality on Brand Equity

Abstract:Five studies using a variety of experimental approaches and secondary data sets show that a visual property present in all brand logos—the degree of (a)symmetry—can interact with brand personality to affect brand equity. Specifically, compared with symmetrical logos, asymmetrical logos tend to be more arousing, leading to increased perceptions of excitement. As such, consumers tend to perceive asymmetrical logos as more congruent with brands that have an exciting personality. This can boost consumers’ evaluations and the market’s financial valuations of such brands, a phenomenon referred to as the “visual asymmetry effect.” The studies also show that this interplay between brand personality and logo design occurs only for the personality of excitement and the visual property of asymmetry. These findings add to theories of visual design and branding and offer actionable insights to marketing practitioners.

Bidirectional and unidirectional PCET in a molecular model of a cobalt-based oxygen-evolving catalyst.

Abstract:The oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is a kinetically demanding reaction that requires efficient coupling of proton and electron transfer. The key proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) event in water oxidation mediated by a cobalt-phosphate-based heterogeneous catalyst is the one-electron, one-proton conversion of Co(III)-OH to Co(IV)-O. We now isolate the kinetics of this PCET step in a molecular Co(4)O(4) cubane model compound. Detailed electrochemical, stopped-flow, and NMR studies of the Co(III)-OH to Co(IV)-O reaction reveal distinct mechanisms for the unidirectional PCET self-exchange reaction and the corresponding bidirectional PCET. A stepwise mechanism, with rate-limiting electron transfer is observed for the bidirectional PCET at an electrode surface and in solution, whereas a concerted proton-electron transfer displaying a moderate KIE (4.3 ± 0.2), is observed for the unidirectional self-exchange reaction.
