Abstract:The remote sensing can provide surface parameters for Evapotranspiration(ET) estimation at regional scale,whereas the traditional approaches just provide points measurement.This paper introduces an ET monitoring system using remote sensing ETWatch,which is an operational processing chain starting from data pre-processing to application products,utilizing spatial information on climate,soil type,land use,vegetation cover,digital elevation,and remote sensed land surface parameters.The surface energy balance algorithm for land(SEBAL) and the surface energy system(SEBS) are integrated into ETWatch to estimate surface fluxes on clear-sky condition,while the Penmon-Monteith is applied to retrieved daily ET based on the surface resistence model,the meteorological data and the surface parameters from remote sensing.The application of ETWatch in Haihe basin is demonstrated for year 2002 to 2005,and a validation is carried by comparing the field fluxes measurement and the hydrological records with the model estimation.The results show that when the energy closure ratio(ECR) of eddy covariance(EC) technique is above 0.9,average deviation of daily ET at the 1 km scale is below 10%;at the 30 m field scale,compared with water consumption from soil-moisture-depletion-method,average deviation of remote sensed daily crop ET is about 12.7%.

Abstract:Accurate understanding of daily evapotranspiration (ET) at field scale is of great significance for agricultural water resources management. The operational simplified surface energy balance (SSEBop) model has been applied to estimate field scale ET with Landsat satellite imagery. However, there is still uncertainty in the ET time reconstruction for cloudy days based on limited clear days’ Landsat ET fraction ( ET f ) computed by SSEBop. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing data can provide daily surface observation over clear-sky areas. This paper presented an enhanced gap-filling scheme for the SSEBop ET model, which improved the temporal resolution of Landsat ET f through the spatio-temporal fusion with SSEBop MODIS ET f on clear days and increased the time reconstruction accuracy of field-scale ET. The results were validated with the eddy covariance (EC) measurements over cropland in northwestern China. It indicated that the improved scheme performed better than the original SSEBop Landsat approach in daily ET estimation, with higher Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE, 0.75 vs. 0.70), lower root mean square error (RMSE, 0.95 mm·d -1 vs. 1.05 mm·d -1 ), and percent bias (PBias, 16.5% vs. 25.0%). This fusion method reduced the proportion of deviation (13.3% vs. 25.5%) in the total errors and made the random error the main proportion, which can be reduced over time and space in regional ET estimation. It also evidently improved the underestimation of crop ET by the SSEBop Landsat scheme during irrigation before sowing and could more accurately describe the synergistic changes of soil moisture and cropland ET. The proposed MODIS and Landsat ET f fusion can significantly improve the accuracy of SSEBop in estimating field-scale ET.

Abstract:In this study, the continuous daily ET at 90 m spatial resolution was estimated from the Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) by using the land surface temperature and land surface reflectance of VNIR combining the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) spatiotemporal characteristics obtained from the Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM). Performance of this scheme used to estimate ET at high spatiotemporal resolution was validate over a heterogeneous oasis-desert regions by using in-situ observations from automatic meteorological systems (AMS) and eddy covariance (EC) systems in the middle reach of Heihe River Basin of Northwest China. The error introduced during the data fusion process based on STARFM is in an acceptable range for the predicted LST at 90 m spatial resolution. The surface energy fluxes estimated from SEBS using predicted remotely sensed data combing MODIS and ASTER spatiotemporal characteristics are agree well with observed surface energy fluxes from EC systems for all land cover types. The continuous daily ET estimated based on SEBS and STARFM seems to produce the general ET trends reasonably well for all land covers.
Monitoring of "All-weather" Evapotranspiration Using Multi-source Remote Sensing Imagery in Cloudy and Mountainous Regions in Southwest China

Abstract:Accurate estimation of surface evapotranspiration (ET) with high quality and fine spatiotemporal resolution is one of the biggest obstacles for routine applications of remote sensing in eco-hydrological studies and water resource management at basin scale. Integrating multi-source remote sensing data is one of the main ideas for many scholars to obtain synthesized frequent high spatial resolution surface ET. This study was based on the theoretically robust surface energy balance system (SEBS) model, which the model mechanism needs further investigation, including the applicability and the influencing factors, such as local environment, heterogeneity of the landscape, and optimized parametric scheme, for improving estimation accuracy. In addition, due to technical and budget limitations, so far, no single sensor provides both high spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Optical remote sensing data is missing due to frequent cloud contamination and other poor atmospheric conditions. The passive microwave (PW) remote sensing has a better ability in overcoming the influences of clouds and rainy. The accurate "all-weather" ET estimation method had been proposed through blending multi-source remote sensing data acquired by optical, thermal infrared (TIR) and PW remote sensors on board polar satellite platforms. The estimation had been carried out for daily ET of the River Source Region in Southwest China, and then the "All-weather" remotely sensed ET results showed that the daily ET estimates had a mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 36% and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.88 mm/day relative to ground measurements from 12 eddy covariance (EC) sites in the study area. The validation results indicated good accuracy using multi-source remote sensing data in cloudy and mountainous regions.

Abstract:Crop evapotranspiration (ET) is a key variable within the global hydrological cycle to account for the irrigation scheduling, water budgeting, and planning of the water resources associated with irrigation in croplands. Remote sensing techniques provide geophysical information at a large spatial scale and over a relatively long time series, and even make possible the retrieval of ET at high spatiotemporal resolutions. The present short study analyzed the daily ET maps generated with the S-SEBI model, adapted to Landsat-8 retrieved land surface temperatures and broadband albedos, at two different crop sites for two consecutive years (2017–2018). Maps of land surface temperatures were determined using Landsat-8 Collection 2 data, after applying the split-window (SW) algorithm proposed for the operational SW product, which will be implemented in the future Collection 3. Preliminary results showed a good agreement with ground reference data for the main surface energy balance fluxes Rn and LE, and for daily ET values, with RMSEs around 50 W/m2 and 0.9 mm/d, respectively, and high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.72–0.91). The acceptable uncertainties observed when comparing with local ground data were reaffirmed after the regional (spatial resolution of 9 km) comparison with reanalysis data obtained from ERA5-Land model, showing a StDev of 0.9 mm/d, RMSE = 1.1 mm/d, MAE = 0.9 mm/d, and MBE = −0.3 mm/d. This short communication tries to show some preliminary findings in the framework of the ongoing Tool4Extreme research project, in which one of the main objectives is the understanding and characterization of the hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean region, since it is key to improve the management of water resources in the context of climate change effects.

Abstract:In semiarid and arid regions, irrigated agriculture consumes most of water resources via evapotranspiration (ET) that mainly consists of evaporation (E) from bare soil and transpiration (T) from plant tissue. Generally, T is regarded as beneficial water use that contribute to plant production but E is considered as water waste. Therefore, daily ET and ET components E and T at filed scale are often required for improving water resource management strategy in semiarid and arid regions. Recently, time-continuous daily ET at filed scale have been achieved based on remote sensing-based ET model and multi-satellite data fusion, but few study focus on estimating of daily field-scale ET component of E and T. In this study, a daily filed-scale ET partitioning method based on the two source energy balance (TSEB) model and the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) was applied and verified in a typical arid area dominated by irrigated cropland and natural desert. The comparisons of instantaneous land surface fluxes and daily ET modeled from proposed method and that derived from eddy covariance (EC) systems and automated weather stations (AWS) set up in irrigated cropland and desert indicate that reasonable surface fluxes partitioning and daily ET can be estimated by using this method. The root mean square error (RMSE) for cropland and desert are 0.87 mm and 0.84 mm, respectively. Evaluations of E and T partitioning capabilities of this proposed method based on E/ET and T/ET derived from isotopic technology at the irrigated cropland site show that the modeled E/ET and T/ET agree well with observations in terms of both magnitude and dynamics. Finally, the multi-year spatiotemporal patterns of modeled ET, E and T at filed scale with reasonable seasonal variation and spatial diversity were produced using the ET partitioning method to provide reasonable information for monitoring water use in study area.

Abstract:Determination of actual evapotranspiration is an important step for simulating the crop growth models in agricultural decision-making process. In this study, actual evapotranspiration (ETa) values for the main crops cultivated in Shahrekord plain, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, Iran, are estimated based on real-time modeling and compared with the results obtained from the remote sensing data. Soil moisture balance was simulated considering the variation rate of crop canopy cover and its effects on evaporation and transpiration parameters. Daily values of ETa were predicted in a repeatable cycle based on the available soil moisture in root zone. Moreover, remote sensing images were analyzed as a data source to achieve the crop water requirement in critical times. For this objective, surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) was used to characterize the evapotranspiration and then derived ETa. Preliminary results obtained by applying satellite information showed a good agreement between the SEBAL estimates of evapotranspiration fluxes and the corresponding values simulated by the soil moisture estimation technique.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (ET) is a crucial component of the soil–plant-atmosphere system. In semi-arid Mediterranean regions, most land water loss occurs through ET, encompassing both evaporation from the earth's surface and plant transpiration. A comprehensive understanding of the actual ET spatiotemporal dynamics is critically important for hydrological modelling and effective water resource management. This significance is further pronounced considering the growing stress on water resources and the potential influence of climate change on water fluxes. Remote sensing (RS) provides long-term, high-resolution data that can contribute to the monitoring and management of natural ecosystems. Surface energy balance (SEB) methods relying on satellite remote sensing have proven effective in measuring actual evapotranspiration (ET a eb ) across different scales. However, their applicability may be constrained by interruptions in image acquisition caused by cloud cover and/or the spatio-temporal resolution limitations of satellites. In this research, a model-based methodology is suggested for simulating the dynamics of the soil–plant-atmosphere system and for estimating the daily actual evapotranspiration (ET p act ) of a Mediterranean Maquis ecosystem in northwest Sardinia. The model integrates ET a eb estimates obtained from the SEBAL model utilizing Landsat-8 data, satellite-derived vegetation indices, on-site measurements of potential evapotranspiration, and the mono-dimensional transient flow Richards equation for simulating soil moisture within the root zone. By combining these elements, the proposed model provides a more comprehensive and accurate estimate of the ET p act between Landsat acquisitions. The SEBAL model showed satisfactory performance in estimating actual evapotranspiration (ET a eb ) on satellite acquisition days, with an average error of 17 % compared to Eddy Covariance measurements. In addition, the integrated modelling approach yielded an ET p act average estimation error of ± 37 % in the whole studied period. The soil moisture simulation by the model had a notable accuracy with an average error of 7.1 %. Temporal analysis showed that the model effectively simulated ET p act and soil moisture under both dry and wet conditions, exhibiting similar monthly and daily variations as observed data. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis revealed that the stress index significantly improved the model's accuracy, while vegetation dynamics had a lower impact. Overall, the proposed model is a valuable tool for estimating ET p act in semi-arid Mediterranean regions, providing important information for water resource management and conservation efforts. Further application and validation of the model are recommended as new data becomes accessible, especially in areas characterized by cropped and irrigated agriculture. In future work, we aim to spatialize the Richards equation and integrate a multi-dimensional water balance hydrologic model.

Quantifying Irrigation Water Use over Regional Scales with Landsat and Climate Data

Abstract:Irrigated agriculture has been identified as using approximately 72% of water globally. Australia, like many places in the world, is subject to water sharing plans that cross government boarders and are subject to a mixture of management policies. There is a pressing need to develop a method to monitor irrigation water use to aid in water resource assessments and monitoring. This paper aims to test a previously developed method which monitors irrigation water use using remotely sensed observations over the catchment scale, without the need for in-situ observations, ground data or in&#8209;depth knowledge of crops and their planting dates. Using conservative assumptions about agricultural land management practice, irrigation is calculated as Irr=AET-P. The method tests three vegetation indices derived from Landsat 5/7/8 images to calculate crop coefficients (Kc) based on multiple published relationships. These are combined through the FAO56 methodology using gridded rainfall and two reference evapotranspiration (ET0) products to find actual evapotranspiration as AET=ET0xKc, providing six ET0-Kc combinations. Validation data is sourced from Irrigation Infrastructure Operators (IIO) from across the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia which are required to record irrigation water deliveries for billing purposes. The majority of these regions are in arid or semi-arid regions. Data periods used in this study range from 2003/04 to 2016/17. Results indicate this method can effectively assess irrigation water use over a range of catchment sizes from ~6,000 to ~600,000 ha. The best results returned a monthly irrigation RMSE ranging from 1.13 to 2.42 mm/month. Issues arise when regions have a designated low water allocation volume for that season (<40%). The allocation percentage is a function of water storage levels, demand and forecasts. Comparisons with the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) and Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) show that the proposed method is robust to the rapid onset and short-term droughts. However, its performance was poor during the long term droughts with low water allocation years. The study results during these years has been predominately attributed to water stress in certain crops being undetected, agricultural managers skipping annual crop commodities as well as stock and domestic water use making up larger portions of total water use. This is a limitation of this approach, although when only comparing results in years with greater than 40% allocations, the results improved significantly showing it can monitor water use effectively. When adequate water is available, this approach is able to accurately predict irrigation water use for the sites examined.
Development of real-time reference evapotranspiration at the regional scale using satellite-based observations

Abstract:Real-time data of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) at different space-time scales are essential to regional agricultural drought assessment, water accounting at the watershed to basin scale, and provide irrigation advisory to farmers. Here, we present a data-fusion approach that integrates satellite-based insolation product (8 km) from an Indian geostationary satellite (Kalpana-1) sensor (VHRR; Very High Resolution Radiometer) and high-resolution (~ 5 km) short-range weather forecast into an FAO56 model based on the classical Penman–Monteith (P-M) formulation. Five year (2009–2013) mean monthly estimates from the daily ET0 product over the Indian landmass were found to vary between 10 and 350 mm. It increased from January to May (70–350 mm), followed by a decrease to reach the lowest in November (10–140 mm), thus typically showing unimodal distribution. The comparison of daily space-based and station-based estimates (at six ground stations) produced a root mean square deviation (RMSD) ranging from 21% to 38% for 977 paired data sets with the correlation coefficient (r) varying from 0.32 to 0.82. The error was reduced from 25% to 10% with an increase in ‘r’ from 0.43 to 0.98 for daily to 10 day summation period. Spatial grid-to-grid comparison of monthly ET0 estimates with Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) potential evapotranspiration (PET) showed RMSD within a range of 1.4–18.4% for most of the months, except for two. Further ET0 analysis over normal and drought years showed that it could be used for comprehensive drought assessment with other existing indicators.

Abstract:Satellite observations of evapotranspiration (ET) have been widely used for water resources management in China. An accurate ET product with a high spatiotemporal resolution is required for research on drought stress and water resources management. However, such a product is currently lacking. Moreover, the performances of different ET estimation algorithms for China have not been clearly studied, especially under different environmental conditions. Therefore, the aims of this study were as follows: (1) to use multisource images to generate a long-time-series (2001-2018) daily ET product with a spatial resolution of 1 km x 1 km based on the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL); (2) to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the SEBAL ET in China using flux observational data and hydrological observational data; and (3) to compare the performance of the SEBAL ET with the MOD16 ET product at the point scale and basin scale under different environmental conditions in China. At the point scale, both the models performed best in the conditions of forest cover, subtropical zones, hilly terrain, or summer, respectively, and SEBAL performed better in most conditions. In general, the accuracy of the SEBAL ET (rRMSE = 44.91 %) was slightly higher than that of the MOD16 ET (rRMSE = 48.72 %). In the basin-scale validation, both the models performed better than in the point-scale validation, with SEBAL obtaining results superior (rRMSE = 13.57 %) to MOD16 (rRMSE D 32.84 %). Additionally, both the models showed a negative bias, with the bias of the MOD16 ET being higher than that of the SEBAL ET. In the daily-scale validation, the SEBAL ET product showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.92 mmd(-1) and an r value of 0.79. In general, the SEBAL ET product can be used for the qualitative analysis and most quantitative analyses of regional ET. Estimating Daily Actual Evapotranspiration at a Landsat-Like Scale Utilizing Simulated and Remote Sensing Surface Temperature

Abstract:Actual evapotranspiration (ET) with high spatiotemporal resolution is very important for the research on agricultural water resource management and the water cycle processes, and it is helpful to realize precision agriculture and smart agriculture, and provides critical references for agricultural layout planning. Due to the impact of the clouds, weather environment, and the orbital period of optical satellite, there are difficulties in providing daily remote sensing data that are not contaminated by clouds for estimating daily ET with high spatial-temporal resolution. By improving the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM), this manuscript proposes the method to fuse high temporal and low spatial resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model surface skin temperature (TSK) with the low temporal and high spatial resolution remote sensing surface temperature for obtaining high spatiotemporal resolution daily surface temperature to be used in the estimation of the high spatial resolution daily ET (ET_WRFHR). The distinction of this study from the previous literatures can be summarized as the novel application of the fusion of WRF-simulated TSK and remote sensing surface temperature, giving full play to the availability of model surface skin temperature data at any time and region, making up for the shortcomings of the remote sensing data, and combining the high spatial resolution of remote sensing data to obtain ET with high spatial (Landsat-like scale) and temporal (daily) resolution. The ET_WRFHR were cross-validated and quantitatively verified with MODIS ET products (MOD16) and observations (ET_Obs) from eddy covariance system. Results showed that ET_WRFHR not only better reflects the difference and dynamic evolution process of ET for different land types but also better identifies the details of various fine geographical objects. It also represented a high correlation with the ET_Obs by the R2 amount reaching 0.9186. Besides, the RMSE and BIAS between ET_WRFHR and the ET_Obs are obtained as 0.77 mm/d and −0.08 mm/d respectively. High R2, as well as the small RMSE and BIAS amounts, indicate that ET_WRFHR has achieved a very good performance.

Abstract:An approach that makes use of meteorological measurements and the spatial perspective provided by satellite data to estimate the time series (monthly or daily) of evapotranspiration (ET) over heterogeneous terrain two-dimensionally has been developed and tested in the Urumqi River basin, Tianshan, China. The formulae utilized in the estimation of actual ET are based on Kojima's equation for a glacier/snow-covered area and Morton's complementary relationship for the other land-cover classes. Data integration and image processing for the estimated ET were all executed on a raster image file that combines Landsat TM (red and NIR reflectance data), land-cover classification and digital elevation model (DEM) in association with the use of meteorological data under a geographic information system (GIS) environment. The specific type of model (either Kojima's or Morton's) and the extent to which it should be applied are determined jointly by the land-cover categories and an algorithm describing the seasonal land-cover changes. The spatially distributed meteorological parameters driving the model were either interpolated from the routine observations with PRISM in the sparse network of meteorological stations or calculated by the relationships of these parameters with those routinely observed. Ground-surface albedo, data were derived by two approaches. For the season when the TM scene was acquired it was obtained by weighting the Landsat TM red and NIR reflectance data. For the other seasons, when the TM scene is not available, it was approximated by multiplying the empirical parameters in regard to each land-cover category with the albedo map of the season when the TM scene was available. As a result, time series of ET can be obtained not only quantitatively, but also visually as a two-dimensional image map. The approach proposed was applied to the Urumqi River basin, China. With field lysimeter data and estimates by the water balance method and the converted results from pan measurements as standard, a method validation was conducted and the accuracy of ET estimation by the approach was evaluated. Abstract:Accurate and timely global evapotranspiration (ET) data are crucial for agriculture, water resource management, and drought forecasting. Although numerous satellite-based ET products are available, few offer near-real-time data. For instance, products like NASA's ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment mounted on the International Space Station (ECOSTRESS) and MOD16 face challenges such as uneven coverage and delays exceeding 1 week in data availability. In this study, we refined the Variation of the Standard Evapotranspiration Algorithm (VISEA) by fully integrating satellite-based data, e.g., European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA5-Land shortwave radiation (which includes satellite remote sensing data within its assimilation system) and MODIS land surface data (which include surface reflectance, temperature and/or emissivity, land cover, vegetation indices, and albedo as inputs). This enables VISEA to provide near-real-time global daily ET estimates with a maximum delay of 1 week at a resolution of 0.05°. Its accuracy was assessed globally using observation data from 149 flux towers across 12 land cover types and comparing them with five other satellite-based ET products and Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) data. The results indicate that VISEA provides accurate ET estimates that are comparable to existing products, achieving a mean correlation coefficient ( R ) of about 0.6 and an RMSE of 1.4 mm d −1 . Furthermore, we demonstrated VISEA's utility in drought monitoring during a drought event in the Yangtze River basin in 2022 in which ET changes correlated with precipitation. The near-real-time capability of VISEA is, thus, especially valuable in meteorological and hydrological applications for coordinating drought relief efforts. Mapping Maize Evapotranspiration with Two-Source Land Surface Energy Balance Approaches and Multiscale Remote Sensing Imagery Pixel Sizes: Accuracy Determination toward a Sustainable Irrigated Agriculture

Abstract:This study evaluated the performance of remote sensing (RS) algorithms for the estimation of actual maize evapotranspiration (ETa) using different spaceborne, airborne, and proximal multispectral data in a semi-arid climate region to identify the optimal platform that provides the best ETa estimates to improve irrigation water management and help make irrigated agriculture sustainable. The RS platforms used in the study included Landsat-8 (30 m pixel spatial resolution), Sentinel-2 (10 m), Planet CubeSat (3 m), multispectral radiometer or MSR (1 m), and a small uncrewed aerial system or sUAS (0.03 m). Two-source surface energy balance (TSEB) models, implementing the series and parallel surface resistance approaches, were used in this study to estimate hourly maize ETa. The data used in this study were obtained from two maize research sites in Greeley and Fort Collins, CO, USA, in 2020 and 2021. Each research site had different irrigation systems. The Greeley site had a subsurface drip system, while the Fort Collins site had surface irrigation (furrow). Maize ETa predictions were compared to observed maize ETa data from an eddy covariance system installed at each research site. Results indicated that the MSR5 proximal platform (1 m) provided optimal RS data for the TSEB algorithms. The MSR5 "point-based" nadir-looking surface reflectance data and surface radiometric temperature combination resulted in the smallest error when predicting hourly (mm/h) maize ETa. The mean bias and root mean square errors (MBE and RMSE, respectively), when predicting maize hourly ETa using the MSR5 sensor data, were equal to −0.02 (−3%) ± 0.07 (11%) mm/h MBE ± RMSE and −0.02 (−3%) ± 0.09 (14%) mm/h for the TSEB parallel and series approaches, respectively. The poorest performance, when predicting hourly TSEB maize ETa, was from Landsat-8 (30 m) multispectral data combined with its original thermal data, since the errors were −0.03 (−5%) ± 0.16 (29%) mm/h and −0.07 (−13%) ± 0.15 (29%) mm/h for the TSEB parallel and series approaches, respectively. These results indicate the need to develop methods to improve the quality of the RS data from sub-optimal platforms/sensors/scales/calibration to further advance sustainable irrigation water management.

A High-resolution Estimation of Terrestrial Evapotranspiration from Landsat Images and its Applications in a Sparse Vegetation Region

Abstract:&#160; &#160; Accurate estimation of high resolutions of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential to study the variation of water resources in highly heterogeneous regions, but there is a severe paucity of ET products with high spatial resolution for long time series. This research improves the PML_V2 model to estimate a 30 m resolution monthly ET, called the PML_30 model. Furthermore, it is applied to estimate the monthly ET from 2000 to 2020 in the Yarkand Oasis. The method uses a linear transformation to harmonize remote sensing data from the Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM), and the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) to the Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI), resulting in multi-source Landsat data with long time series. High spatial resolution and long-time series of leaf area index, land surface emissivity, and albedo are derived from the multi-source Landsat data to produce 30 m resolution ET products. The PML_30 model and PML_V2 models were compared to the regional water balance&#8217;s multi-year average ET of 380mm. The former is estimated at 344 mm with a relative error of 0.09, whereas the latter is at 304 mm with 0.2. At the point scale, the PML_30 model&#8217;s ET was compatible with the water consumption pattern of the related plant, and the variation in groundwater. The average annual ET for the Yarkand Oasis and its lower reaches is 343 mm/yr and 168 mm/yr, respectively. Between 2000 and 2015, the ET of the lower reaches increased by 2.86 mm/yr, but between 2016 and 2020, it decreased. The proposed PML_30 model is easily applicable to a larger scale with increased estimation accuracy and is well suited for areas with high heterogeneity such as areas with sparse vegetation cover. &#160;

Abstract:Monitoring of crop water consumption, also known as actual evapotranspiration (ETa), is crucial for the prudent use of limited freshwater resources. Remote-sensing-based algorithms have become a popular approach for providing spatio-temporal information on ETa. Satellite-based ETa products are widely available. However, identifying an adequate product remains a challenge due to validation data scarcity. This study developed an assessment process to identify superior ETa products in agricultural areas in Egypt. The land cover product (MCD12Q1) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was evaluated and used to detect agricultural areas. The performances of three ETa products, namely: Earth Engine Evapotranspiration Flux (EEFlux), USGS-FEWS NET SSEBop ETa monthly product, and MODIS ETa monthly product (MOD16A2), were evaluated. The ETa values of these products were compared to previous ETa observations and evaluated using the integrated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (iNDVI) on a seasonal and annual basis. Finally, the irrigation efficiency throughout Egypt was calculated based on the annual Relative Water Supply (RWS) index. Results reveal that the SSEBop monthly product has the best performance in Egypt, followed by the MOD16A2. The EEFlux overestimated ETa values by 36%. RWS had a range of 0.96–1.47, indicating high irrigation efficiency. The findings reported herein can assist in improving irrigation water management in Egypt and the Nile Basin.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important hydrological variable for better irrigation management, water budgeting, and runoff estimation which should be estimated as precisely as possible both in space and time. However, most of the available crop coefficient-based ET computation methods provide point-scale estimates which need upscaling to apply at the catchment or command area scale. This study evaluates the applicability of the simplified surface energy balance index (S-SEBI) method to compute the spatially distributed daily ET in the Kangsabati reservoir command in eastern India considering the crop coefficient-based coupled Hargreaves–Samani (ETc_HG) method as the benchmark. The study is based on two major crops of paddy and potato in the Rabi season of 2015 at 100 surveyed ground truth locations in the selected command area having different crop growth stages and using the site-specific Landsat 8 images on three cloud-free dates. The S-SEBI method shows improved ET estimates during the crop development stage characterized by higher canopy cover than that during the initial crop development stage with lesser canopy cover that traps less radiation. Results revealed that S-SEBI-based ET estimates correlated well with ETc_HG with r and RMSE value of 0.06 and 1.13 mm/day (initial stage), 0.71 and 0.52 mm/day (development stage) and 0.77 and 0.52 (maturity stage) for paddy. The r and RMSE value for potato is found to be better during the development stage (0.43, 0.69 mm/day) than the initial stage (0.17, 0.64 mm/day) in a similar trend with paddy. Therefore, the crop coefficient-based method could be advantageous at point-scale with adequate data availability conditions, whereas the S-SEBI method could be used in data-scarce areas to estimate the spatially distributed ET values.

Abstract:Lack of good quality satellite images because of cloud contamination or long revisit time severely degrades predictions of evapotranspiration (ET) time series at watershed/regional scales from satellite‐based surface flux models. We integrate the feedback model developed by Granger and Gray (the GG model) with the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL), with the objective to generate ET time series of high spatial resolution and reliable temporal distribution at watershed scales. First, SEBAL is employed to yield estimates of ET for the Baiyangdian watershed in a semihumid climatic zone in north China on cloud‐free days, where there exists the complementary relationship (CR) between actual ET and pan ET. These estimates constitute input to the GG model to inversely derive the relationship between the relative evaporation and the relative drying power of the air. Second, the modified GG model is used to yield ET time series on a daily basis simply by using routine meteorological data and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) albedo and leaf area index products. Results suggest that the modified GG model that has incorporated remotely sensed ET can effectively extend remote sensing based ET to days without images and improve spatial representation of ET at watershed scales. Utility of the evaporative fraction method and the crop coefficients approaches to extrapolate ET time series depends largely on the number and interval of good quality satellite images. Comparison of ET time series from the two techniques and the proposed integration method for days with daily net radiation larger than 100 W m−2 and corresponding pan ET clearly shows that only the integration method can exhibit an asymmetric CR at the watershed scale and daily time scale. Validation performed using hydrologic budget calculations indicate that the proposed method has the highest accuracy in terms of annual estimates of ET for both watersheds in north China.

Abstract:This study presents a Bayesian-driven ensemble learning framework to minimize errors in evapotranspiration (ET) data assimilation, thereby generating a continuous-scale ET estimation with improved accuracy for the data-scarce arid Central Asia (CA). Five state-of-the-art gridded ET products were extensively tested and utilized to reconstruct new long-term ET data at grid scale, including two Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS)-Land Surface Models (LSM) (Catchment and NOAH), two reanalysis products (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications – ver. 2 (MERRA2)), along with the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam (GLEAM) satellite ET product ver. 3.6b. Taylor Skill Score was employed to evaluate the input gridded ET datasets, using in situ measurements across four arid biomes — cropland, shrubland, farmland, and grassland —as benchmarks. Bayes-Markov Chain Monte Carlo (Bayes-MCMC)-derived logarithmically transformed predictors from the posterior ensemble anomalies were standardized to resolve the mismatches in the cumulative distribution functions of ET data relating to the in situ observations. We found that the constrained residual errors were more profound between 45th and 95th percentiles for the rescaled total ET anomalies across all the input ET datasets at 95 % confidence interval. Moreover, the weighted ensemble estimates derived from the Bayes-MCMC were instrumental in correcting ET anomalies, leading to the robust reconstruction of a more reliable ensemble mean ET data for Central Asia ( CAET ens ) at monthly temporal and 0.25° spatial resolutions, spanning from 2003 to 2020. Overall, CAET ens exhibited superior performance, achieving the highest averaged Kling-Gupta Efficiency of 0.75 and registering the lowest Root Mean Square Error of 6.85 mm/m compared to the standalone gridded ET products. Comparisons of spatial distributions of fine-scale features, and evaluations using standard metrics revealed that all ET products varied significantly (p < 0.05) by biome types. Remarkably, only CAET ens exhibited a reasonable low positive bias and pronounced ability to resolve the complex spatiotemporal patterns associated with the input gridded ET products. The study bridges the gap in continuous ET monitoring for sustainable water resources management in CA.
