Abstract:We try to establish the index system of high-quality development of the manufacturing industry from the five dimensions of innovation, coordination, green, sharing, and opening. The development level of the digital economy is measured from three dimensions, including digital infrastructure, digital popularization, and digital economy application depth. Based on panel data of 30 provinces from 2011 to 2019, this paper uses a metrological model to explore the influence of digital economy development on the manufacturing industry. The results show that the digital economy has a significant effect on the development of the manufacturing industry. Still, there is obvious regional heterogeneity: The eastern, central, and northeast regions have a significant effect, while the western regions have no significant effect.

Abstract:The positive interaction between digital economy development and urban–rural relationship adjustment can both expand the contribution of technological factors and enhance the balance of urban–rural development. This paper aims to explore the trends and barriers to the coupled and coordinated development of the digital economy and urban–rural integration. This paper measures the degree of coupled coordination between the digital economy and urban–rural integration based on provincial panel data from 2013 to 2020 in China. Based on this, this paper investigates the characteristics and driving forces of the coupled coordination relationship through the chronological evolution method and geographically weighted regression. The results show that (1) the coupling relationship between the digital economy and urban–rural integration has improved substantially in Chinese provinces; (2) heterogeneity still exists at the provincial level; (3) this relationship is expected to be optimized over time; and (4) information construction, rational distribution, balanced growth, equalization of public services and digital-industry development does have a positive effect on the improvement of the coupled coordination relationship, and the popularity of the internet has a negative effect. Accordingly, this paper mainly draws the following conclusions. The coupling relationship between the digital economy and urban–rural integration in the Chinese provinces shows a tendency to be more coordinated. It is necessary to promote the development of the five positive drivers and to guide and regulate the negative drivers.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to assess the level of development of the digital economy by constructing a comprehensive measurement system. It explores regional differences within China’s digital economy, highlighting the varying degrees of digital infrastructure, industrialization, governance and innovation capabilities across provinces. Design/methodology/approach A multidimensional analytical framework including digital infrastructure, industrialization, digitization, governance and innovation was developed. Entropy methods were used to calculate the weights of each dimension. The coupled coordination degree model and the Tobit model with random effects panel are applied to analyze the current situation, discrepancies and influencing factors. Findings This study reveals significant regional differences in the development of China’s digital economy, characterized by a pattern of “strong in the east, weak in the west; high in the south, low in the north.” This geographical imbalance exacerbates the “polarization effect” and the “siphon effect,” where resources and growth tend to concentrate in already developed areas, further intensifying regional inequalities. The development of the digital economy is driven by principles of innovation, coordination and sharing, which facilitate the creation and dissemination of new technologies and collaboration across different sectors. However, this progress is also constrained by considerations of environmental sustainability (green) and economic openness. Originality/value This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a novel multidimensional measurement system for the level of digital economy development. The unique application of the coupled coordination degree model and Tobit model to analyze regional differences and influencing factors provides insights into the dynamics of China’s digital economy.

Abstract:The coupling and coordination of digital economy and urban–rural integration can help narrow the urban–rural gap and help realize comprehensive modernization. Based on the data of 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020, the index systems of digital economy and urban–rural integration were constructed, respectively, by using the entropy method, and the coupling coordination degree between digital economy and urban–rural integration was calculated by using the coupling coordination degree model. The spatio-temporal evolution characteristics were analyzed by using the spatial Durbin model, and the influencing factors of the coupling coordination degree were deeply decomposed. The results showed that the coupling coordination degree of digital economy and urban–rural integration has been significantly improved in the whole country during the decade, with the overall spatial distribution characteristics of "high in the east and low in the west" and "high in the south and low in the north". The growth momentum of the backward provinces was relatively better, which have more obvious characteristics of positive spatial agglomeration. The level of economic development, government support, technological innovation and industrial structure had positive promoting effects on the coupling coordination degree. Except for the negative spatial spillover effect of government support, the three other factors all had promoting effects on the coupling coordination degree in neighboring provinces. The effect intensity of influencing factors also had regional heterogeneity.

Abstract:Promoting the coupling coordinated development of the digital economy and new-type urbanization is important for sustainable development in China. By constructing an indicator system of the coupling coordinated development of the digital economy and new-type urbanization based on panel data of China from 2013 to 2021, this study evaluates the coupling coordination degree of the two systems and identifies the influence of crucial driving factors. The results show that the coupling coordination degree of the two systems has increased over time for all regions, while the eastern region has been kept as the best and the western region the worst. In the next 5 years, the differences in the coupling coordination development of the two systems between regions are predicted to reduce gradually, and the central and western regions are catching up with the eastern region. The effects of key driving factors are gradually increasing, with economic development and technological innovation as the leading factors for the coupling coordination development of the two systems. These results are valuable for improving the policy measures to promote the coupling coordination development of the two systems.

Abstract:The coordinated development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry is vital for high-quality economic development. Based on the provincial data of China from 2012 to 2020, this study applied the coupling coordination degree model, σ convergence model and Dagum–Gini coefficient decomposition method to analyze the coupling coordination level, convergence characteristics, spatial differences and sources of digital financial and advanced manufacturing industry development in China. The results show that the coupling coordination level between the two has crossed from the run-in transition stage to the coordinated development stage and shows a rapid growing trend. The coupling coordination degree of the eastern region is the highest, followed by the central and western regions. It has an obvious convergence trend, and the overall difference is significantly reduced. The intra-regional difference of coupling coordination degree in the western region is the largest, indicating the comparatively larger gap in the development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry among western provinces. The inter-regional difference between the east–west regions is the largest and is the main source of overall differences, which proves the fact of unbalanced development between regions. It is suggested to adopt differentiated regional policies to promote the coordinated development of digital finance and the advanced manufacturing industry.

Abstract:The digital economy uses its own digital information advantages to reduce the intensity of energy consumption brought by economic growth. Intelligent manufacturing achieves cost reduction and efficiency through the integration of manufacturing and intelligence as well as digitalization and information technology. The two have become a new engine for sustainable economic development at present, and they can promote and influence each other. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship between them. In this regard, this study aims to build a coupling coordination model of digital economy and intelligent manufacturing and to make an empirical analysis using the data of Chinese provincial administrative regions in order to provide a theoretical reference for promoting sustainable economic development. The research finds that (1) the digital economy and intelligent manufacturing are mainly cross-coupled from four aspects: infrastructure, technological innovation, product optimization and organizational change. The development level and speed of the former are significantly higher than those of the latter, and the gap does not decrease with time. The two have a strong correlation, but there is no high-quality coupling coordination. (2) The main obstacle factors to the digital economy lie in the imperfect supporting facilities, the short board of technological innovation and the lack of technological application capacity. Intelligent manufacturing lacks intelligent application and technological innovation. (3) Influencing factors such as opening to the outside world, economic development, high-level talent input, industrial structure and innovation emphasis have different effects on their coupling and coordinated development in different regions. (4) The spatial correlation test shows that the coupling coordination degree of each region is spatially positively correlated. This research helps to promote the coupling and coordinated development of the digital economy and intelligent manufacturing.

Abstract:Under the strategy of digital technology development and rural revitalisation, the digital economy has gradually become a powerful engine for rural revitalisation and development. Based on the coupling coordination mechanism of digital economy and rural revitalisation, this paper constructs the index evaluation system of digital economy and rural revitalisation and empirically studies the development characteristics of digital economy and rural revitalisation by using the coupling coordination degree and grey relation model. The results show that during 2016–2020, the overall development level of digital economy and rural revitalisation in China is high in the East and low in the West. The coupling coordination between digital economy and rural revitalisation has significant regional differences and a downward trend, and the coupling coordination degree is positively correlated. The empirical results of the grey correlation model show that the number of postal employees and per capital grain production are the most important potential factors affecting digital economy and rural revitalisation, respectively. Finally, it is suggested that the government should continue to increase investment in science, technology, and agriculture, accelerate the project of cultivating high-level scientific and technological innovation and rural management talents, and strengthen regional cooperation and collaboration.

A study of the coupling between the digital economy and regional economic resilience: Evidence from China

Abstract:The contemporary economic landscape has placed significant emphasis on the digital economy and economic resilience, progressively emerging as pivotal focal points for examining the high-quality development of economic systems. However, there remains to be more research on several critical topics. This includes the characteristics of coordinated development between the digital economy and economic resilience systems and their interdependence. In response, this study formulates a comprehensive evaluative framework for digital economy development and regional economic resilience, grounded in the intrinsic mechanisms of both domains. It conducts a thorough evaluation employing entropy weight-TOPSIS methodology. Additionally, leveraging coupling theory, a coordination model’s coupling degree serves as the foundational framework for scrutinizing the symbiotic advancement of the digital economy and economic resilience, along with their interdependent nature. The research sample comprises data from 31 provinces and municipalities in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2011 to 2020. Spatial autocorrelation and Geodetector methodologies probe the evolutionary traits and driving factors underlying the coordinated developmental relationship between these two systems. The findings indicate an upward trajectory in China’s annual comprehensive development index for digital economy development (from 0.233 to 0.458) and regional economic resilience (from 0.393 to 0.497). The coupling and coordination between the two systems, measured from 0.504 in 2011 to 0.658 in 2020, demonstrate a consistent growth pattern with an average annual increase of 3.01%. These levels exhibit continuous improvement, with comprehensive economic zones manifesting hierarchical results within the coupling range of [0.5, 0.8]. Notably, agglomeration development evinces a pronounced spatial positive correlation, while local Moran scattering points are primarily concentrated in localized migration leaps. Factors such as foreign-funded enterprises’ total import and export volume, online payment capability, and fiber-optic cable length greatly influence the coupling relationship. In contrast, other variables exhibit a lower and more fluctuating degree of weighted impact. This study establishes a foundation for the synergistic and effective development of the digital economy and economic resilience within the Chinese region. Simultaneously, it offers valuable insights for research of related subjects in global contexts.

Abstract:The coupling coordination between the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development has become an inevitable choice to promote economic high-quality development in China. This paper conducts an empirical analysis of the coupling coordination degree between the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development via the entropy evaluation method, coupling coordination model, Dagum Gini coefficient and its decomposition, and β spatial convergence model, based on the spatial data of 31 provinces in China for a time period ranging from 2008 to 2020. The major research findings of this study are as follows: (1) the coupling coordination between the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development represents a whole steady-upward trend in China, with large regional differences. (2) There is a gradual decrease in the overall spatial difference of the coupling coordination, with the largest intra-regional difference in the eastern region, and significant inter-regional differences in the east-west, east-northeast, and east-central regions. Moreover, the hypervariable density serves as the major source of the regional differences. (3) There exists β Convergence for coupling coordination degrees of the whole country and the four regions. However, the spatial effects are different in different regions due to different influencing factors. Therefore, sufficient attention should be paid to the dynamic trend, the difference, and the imbalance of the coupling coordination degree between the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development. The research is of great significance for accurately implementing policies according to different levels of local resource endowments and economic development, and narrowing the regional differences of the coupling coordination between the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development.

Abstract:The digital economy city and green development of China are important engines with important backgrounds. This paper takes 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province as the research object. By constructing the index system of the digital economy and green development, this paper discusses the external spatial pattern and internal temporal evolution characteristics of the coordinated development of the digital economy and green development from the two perspectives of intercity and inner city. The results show that: 1) From the perspective of intercity, there is a large gap between the development level of the digital economy and the green development level of all cities, only Guangzhou and Shenzhen have the digital economy development level ahead of the green development level. The coupling level of the two systems presents an unbalanced pattern of "centre-edge," and "Guangzhou-Foshan-Shenzhen-Dongguan" becomes the core pole of the coupling development of the two systems in the province. The coordinated horizontal cascade distribution of the two systems is obvious, showing a spatial pattern of decreasing step by step from the first circle to the third circle. 2) From the perspective of inner city, the digital economy level and green development level of all cities showed an upward trend from 2013 to 2019. The coupling level shows a two-stage development trend: the stable development stage from 2013 to 2016, and he accelerated development stage from 2016 to 2019, and the internal interaction of the two systems is deepening. The coordination level of all cities improved significantly in 7 years, and in 2019, 21 cities all reached the level of moderate coordination or high coordination. Based on above research conclusions, in order to promote the positive interaction between digital economy and green development, this paper proposes to optimize resource allocation based on regional differences, and adhere to innovation-driven policy proposals to activate the potential of green development.

Abstract:An evaluation index system for the coupled and coordinated development of China’s digital economy and rural revitalization, including a total of 46 indicators for the digital economy and rural revitalization subsystems, was constructed and combined with the entropy weight method, the coupling coordination degree model, Zhou’s constraint identification index, the Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition method, and the panel spatial econometric model to analyze the level of coupled and coordinated development of China’s digital economy and rural revitalization. The results found that: (1) the coupling and coordination between the two have gradually improved. The constraints of the digital economy on rural revitalization were gradually alleviated from 2011 to 2015, but after the 19th Party Congress, the development trend of rural revitalization has significantly outstripped the digital economy. (2) the spatial differences in the degree of coupling and coordination between the two are dominated by inter-regional differences and show significant spatial convergence and spatial correlation. Differentiated digital economy development strategies and more radiation in polarized areas are important for reducing regional differences in the level of coupling and coordination between the digital economy and rural revitalization. This will help China’s digital countryside grow more efficiently.

Abstract:Green innovation and the digital economy are the new engine and driving force for Chinese high-quality development and will become the mainstream of China's high-quality development. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the interaction between the two for the formulation of economic development policies. This paper constructed an evaluation system of green science and technology innovation efficiency (GSTIE) and digital economy level (DEL) based on 30 provinces in China. Through the corrected coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, this paper measured the coupling coordination degree of green science and technology innovation efficiency and DEL and analyzed its provincial differences and spatial effects. By employing the fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) method, this paper further explored the influencing factors configuration affecting the coupling coordination degree of GSTIE and DEL. The research results are as follows. Compared with the development of green science and technology innovation, the development of the digital economy was relatively backward. The coupling coordination degree between China's provincial GSTIE and DEL showed an overall increasing trend year by year, and there was obvious spatial heterogeneity in which the eastern region was the highest, followed by the western and central regions. A single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for a high coupling coordination degree. There were four paths that improve the coordinated development level between GSTIE and DEL: HC + RD + OP-jointly driven, RD + OP-dual driven, HC + GS-dual driven, and GS-oriented. Finally, based on the research conclusions, this paper proposed corresponding policy suggestions.

Abstract:The quality and stability of the ecological environment are inevitable requirements of sustainable development, and previous studies have confirmed that digital economy and technological innovation have a positive enabling effect on the ecological environment. Against the background, clarify the current coordinated development relationship and level of digital economy, technological innovation, and ecological environment (DTE), and put forward policy recommendations to promote the coordinated development. This paper utilizes China’s provincial panel data from 2013 to 2020 to construct a measurement index system for the levels of development in the digital economy, technological innovation, and ecological environment. The coupling coordination model is applied to evaluate the coordination relationship and level of the DTE system. Additionally, a principal component factor analysis is conducted to examine the driving factors of collaborative development level. Results show that (1) the coupling coordination relationship continues to improve, especially in cities like Guangzhou, Beijing, and Zhejiang. In 2020, most of the DTE systems’ coupling coordination in China’s 30 provinces were in the basic coordination stage. (2) Besides Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and other economically developed cities that lag behind in ecological environment, the rest lag in technological innovation. (3) The economic development level, technological innovation ability, and environmental forcing mechanism are the main driving forces for the development of the coupling and coordination degree of the DTE system in Chinese provinces and cities. The driving force score has shown an upward trend during the research period, and a significant upward trend after 2017.

Abstract:The convergence of China’s digital economy and green finance holds great significance for fostering a sustainable and high-quality developmental path. However, existing studies have not explored the coupling coordination development between these two crucial subsystems. To bridge this gap, this paper employs a modified coupling coordination degree (CCD) model to assess and affirm the coupling coordination degree between the digital economy and green finance across 30 provinces in China from 2015–2021. Based on degree results, provinces are classified into three clusters by using K-means and hierarchical clustering algorithm. Our findings unveil that the current level of coupling coordination development in China is at a primary coordination stage. Although regional disparities significantly exist, the overall level of coordination remains steadily increasing, with the eastern region outperforming the western region. Additionally, we determine that the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption on the coupling coordination development of these systems has been limited. This research sheds light on the evolution of coupling systems and offers practical recommendations for strengthening the coordinated development of the digital economy and green finance.

Abstract:The rapid development of the digital economy is a powerful driving force to promote high-quality economic growth all over the world. Although a number of studies have been conducted to investigate the development of the digital economy in China, these studies pay little attention to the spatial linkages between the 30 provinces in China and the developmental differences between northern and southern China. Using Chinese digital economic data from 2004 to 2019, we propose an index system to measure the developmental levels of the digital economy and obtain the annual developmental levels of these provinces by using the factor analysis method. We analyze the regional differences of developmental levels by using the Theil index and kernel density estimation method. More importantly, the network method is used to analyze the correlations between the developmental levels of the digital economy in all provinces of China. By decomposing regional differences, our study shows that polarized and uncoordinated development is prominent. The development level of the digital economy in the southern region is higher than that in the northern region. In terms of regional correlations, the network study suggests that there are beneficial and spillover effects of the digital economy development between provinces. Based on the analysis results, we propose policies for improving the development of the digital economy in China.

Abstract:The deep integration of the digital economy and high-quality energy development is a vital breakthrough in promoting the digital transformation and upgrading of energy, and it is also a critical path to achieving green and low-carbon development. However, the degree of integration of the two has yet to be discovered. This article measures the coupling coordination degree of the digital economy and high-quality energy development using panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020, explores the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the coupling coordination degree, and further analyzes the driving factors of the coupling coordination degree. The results show that:(1) The coupling coordination degree shows an upward trend, but there are apparent gradient differences and spatial non-equilibrium features in the coupling coordination degree among provinces. (2) The coupling coordination degree shows a "parabolic" spatial trend of "high east and low west" in the east-west direction and an "inverted U-shaped" spatial trend in the north-south direction. (3) The center of gravity of the coupling coordination degree moves to the southwest, clustering in the northeast-southwest direction and showing a spreading trend in the southeast-northwest direction. (4) The coupling coordination degree has a significant positive spatial correlation, and the cold-hot spot gradually develops into a distribution pattern with the Yangtze River Delta in China as the agglomeration center. (5) Economic development, industrial structure, government behavior, environmental regulation, urbanization, technological innovation, and external openness significantly impact the coupling coordination degree. In addition, economic development and human capital have a positive spatial spillover effect on the coupling coordination degree. Urbanization level and technological innovation have a negative spatial spillover effect on the coupling coordination degree. Accordingly, to promote the coupling and interaction between the digital economy and high-quality energy development, the government should take effective measures in optimizing the industrial structure, scientifically promoting the urbanization process, and enhancing the scientific and technological innovation capacity.
Analysis of the coupling coordinated development and evolutionary trend of digital economy and ecological environment

Abstract:In order to clarify the coordinated development status between the digital economy and the ecological environment in the context of rapid development of the digital economy and frequent ecological environment problems, we constructed an evaluation system using data related to the digital economy and the ecological environment in China from 2011 to 2019. And the level of coordinated development is calculated with the help of entropy method and the Coupling Coordinated Development (CCD) model. Further, we analyzed the spatial and temporal evolutionary trends of their coordinated development levels with the kernel density analysis and the Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition. The results of the entropy method and CCD show that both the level of digital economy, the level of ecological environment and the level of coupling coordination between the two have increased. And the level of coordinated development shows regional heterogeneity, with the highest in the eastern region, followed by the central region, and the lowest in the western region. The results of the kernel density analysis show that there is heterogeneity in the development process of CCD scores over time across regions. The results of the Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition show that the overall inter-regional differences, as well as intra-regional differences, are fluctuating and decreasing. And the overall imbalance mainly comes from the differences in development levels between regions. The analysis of the above methods provides a basis for understanding the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the coordinated development of China’s digital economy and ecological environment. And it also provides relevant policy recommendations for promoting coordinated and sustainable development among regions.
