Abstract:Acoustic Airy beams as non-diffractive beams possess self-bending, self-healing, and non-diffraction virtues and are expected to have great potential in applications like ultrasonic imaging. Here an analytical theory is provided for Gaussian modulated Airy (gAiry) acoustic beams. It is revealed through numerical calculations and finite element simulations that gAiry beams inherit the merits mentioned above of standard Airy beams. In theoretically predicted and more practical cases where sources of limited apertures generate beams, reduction of side lobes is found in gAiry fields, while bilateral focusing using a pair of beams shows improved field features when compared with focused Airy fields. The theories and observations here can help deploy gAiry beams in applications.

Abstract:The acoustic non-diffracting Airy beam as its optical counterpart has unique features of self-bending and self-healing. The complexity of most current designs handicaps its applications. A simple design of an acoustic source capable of generating multi-frequency and broad-band acoustic Airy beam has been theoretically demonstrated by numerical simulations. In the design, a piston transducer is corrugated to induce spatial phase variation for transducing the Airy function. The piston's surface is grooved in a pattern that the width of each groove corresponds to the half wavelength of Airy function. The resulted frequency characteristics and its dependence on the size of the piston source are also discussed. This simple design may promote the wide applications of acoustic Airy beam particularly in the field of medical ultrasound. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:- Convergence of ultrasonic energy is of great importance in the medical and engineering fields. In this work, ultrasonic focusing based on circular Airy-like beam (CALB) is numerically and experimentally demonstrated. The CALB focusing can be achieved simply using a planar resin ring lens immersed in water. At 2 MHz, the acoustic intensity at the focus can reach 257 times that for the incident wave. Arising from the self-healing feature of Airy beams, the CALB focusing can be well maintained even if there exists an obstacle in the acoustic path. Meanwhile, the focusing behaviour is well performed in a broad frequency range of 1.5 MHz to 3.1 MHz due to the simple and non-resonant design. By adjusting the frequency of the incident waves, the focal length can be modified without changing the lens structure. The CALB focusing and the corresponding planar lens may promote wide applications in ultrasound imaging, non-destructive testing, acoustic tweezing and medical diagnostic techniques.Copyright (c) 2022 EPLA
Air-Coupled Ultrasonic Spiral Phased Array for High-Precision Beamforming and Imaging

Abstract:Sparse spiral phased arrays are advantageous for many emerging air-coupled ultrasonic applications, since grating lobes are prevented without being constrained to the half-wavelength element spacing requirement of well-known dense arrays. As a result, the limitation on the maximum transducer diameter is omitted and the aperture can be enlarged for improving the beamforming precision without requiring the number of transducers to be increased. We demonstrate that in-air imaging, in particular, benefits from these features, enabling large-volume, unambiguous and high-resolution image formation. Therefore, we created an air-coupled ultrasonic phased array based on the Fermat spiral, capable of transmit, receive and pulse-echo operation, as well as 3D imaging. The array consists of 64 piezoelectric 40-kHz transducers (Murata MA40S4S), spanning an aperture of 200mm. First, we provide an application-independent numerical and experimental characterization of the conventional beamforming performance of all operation modes for varying focal directions and distances. Second, we examine the resulting imaging capabilities using the single line transmission technique. Apart from the high maximum sound pressure level of 152 dB, we validate that unambiguous high-accuracy 3D imaging is possible in a wide field of view (±80°), long range (20cm to 5m+) and with a high angular resolution of up to 2.3°. Additionally, we demonstrate that object shapes and patterns of multiple reflectors are recognizable in the images generated using a simple threshold for separation. In total, the imaging capabilities achieved are promising to open up further possibilities, e.g. robust object classification in harsh environments based on ultrasonic images.

Abstract:<p>Modulated by the spatial phase, Airy-like beams that possess the faster and better self-healing as well as the greater acceleration along the desired arbitrary trajectory are introduced. Airy-like beams have the strong spontaneous-focusing ability and the peak value of the focal plane is 5.4 times that of the initial plane when traveling along the quadratic function trajectory. Besides, the larger quadratic coefficient and the smaller constant term of the quadratic function can enhance the self-healing and the spontaneous-focusing of the beams. When the beams transmit along the snakelike trajectory, the original main lobe separates a new main lobe, and the energy will concentrate on the new main lobe. Airy-like beams, along a hyperbolic-secant trajectory, can remain non-diffraction over long distances. However, when traveling along a hyperbolic trajectory, the evolution process is very similar to that of Airy-Gaussian vortex beams. These excellent properties can be applied to the special beams' modulation and optimization. Furthermore, it may provide a way for constructing beams along the special trajectory with the desired spontaneous-focusing and self-healing.</p>

Abstract:Reflection artifacts caused by a bone-like layer badly degrade the quality of photoacoustic images in many biomedical applications, e.g., in vivo brain imaging through the skull. We proposed an ultrasonic-guided photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) to remove the reflection artifacts. This system is developed from dual-mode microscopy, integrating a scanning acoustic microscopy with a conventional PAM. Based on similar propagation characteristics of a photoacoustic signal and ultrasonic echo in a bone-like layer, we employ the ultrasonic echo as a filter to remove the multiple reflected artifacts in photoacoustic signals and obtain artifact-free images. An experiment of imaging a phantom below a bone-like film is used to demonstrate the performance of this method. The results suggest that this method can achieve an artifact-free image of the phantom under the film successfully, whereas the conventional PAM fails to achieve clean images of the vessel-like absorbers. This study might improve the imaging quality of PAM in many biomedical applications.
High-Quality Passive Acoustic Mapping with the Cross-Correlated Angular Spectrum Method

Abstract:While passive acoustic mapping (PAM) has been advanced for monitoring acoustic cavitation activity in focused ultrasound (FUS) therapy, achieving both real-time and high-quality imaging capabilities is still challenging. The angular spectrum (AS) method presents the most efficient algorithm for PAM, but it suffers from artifacts and low resolution due to the diffraction pattern of the imaging array. Data-adaptive beamformers suppress artifacts well, but their overwhelming computational complexity, more than two orders of magnitude higher than the classical time exposure acoustic (TEA) method, hinders their application in real-time. In this work, we introduce the cross-correlated AS method to address the challenge. This method is based on cross-correlating the AS back-propagated wave fields, in the frequency domain, measured by different apodized sub-apertures of the transducer array to provide the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) matrix for artifacts suppression. We observed that the spatial pattern of NCC matrix is variable which can be utilized by the triple apodization with cross-correlation (TAX) with AS scheme, namely the AS-TAX method, for optimal artifacts suppression outcomes. Both the phantom and mouse tumor experiments showed that: 1) the AS-TAX method has comparable image quality as the data-adaptive beamformers, reducing the energy spread area by 34.8-66.6% and improving image signal-to-noise ratio by 10.7-14.5 dB compared to TEA; 2) it reduces the computational complexity by two orders of magnitude compared to TEA allowing millisecond-level image reconstruction speed with a parallel implementation; 3) it can well map microbubble cavitation activity of different status (stable or inertial). The AS-TAX method represents a real-time approach to monitor cavitation-based FUS therapy with high image quality.

Abstract:Manipulating Airy beams to symmetric Airy beams (SABs) with abruptly autofocusing and self-accelerating properties has attracted much attention. With such a particular propagation dynamic, SABs may provide great potential in dynamic signal imaging. On the other hand, the generation of SABs by spatial light modulators suffers from the limitations of phase gradient accuracy, low optical efficiency ( < 40 % ), and a bulky footprint. Therefore, exploring imaging applications and optimal generation methods of these Airy-type beams deserves further research. Here, based on the coordinate transformation of SAB, an asymmetric Airy beam (AAB) is realized. Symmetric/asymmetric cubic phase microplates (SCPPs/ACPPs) are designed and fabricated for generating SAB/AAB. The SCPP/ACPP demonstrates superior performance: compact construction ( 60 μm × 60 μm × 1.1 μm ), continuous variation of phase, high efficiency ( ∼ 81 % at 532 nm), and broadband operation from 405 to 780 nm. Dynamic imaging under monochromatic and polychromatic lights is realized by the SAB/AAB, indicating various results at different propagation distances with a certain initial signal. Further investigation reveals that the SCPP on a soft substrate maintains its physical dimensions and optical properties unchanged during stretching. Our work enables wide potential applications in integrated optics, beam manipulation, and imaging.

Abstract:Airy beams in acoustic tweezer devices have the advantages of propagation invariance, transverse acceleration, and self-healing, which may be useful for applications in micromanipulation and clinical medicine. However, the existing Airy beam generation devices, which only modulate the initial phase, greatly reduce their spatial propagation invariance, and the scattering force on which they transmit large particles (larger than the wavelength) cannot determine and control their transmission ends. Here, we report the generation of compensated acoustic Airy beams, which show adjustable peak positions, allowing the microbubbles to be dragged into predefined destinations along parabolic trajectories.

Abstract:Non-diffraction electromagnetic beams such as Airy beams attract wide exploration in various disciplines owing to its fascinating features and great potential of applications. Although generation and applications of Airy beams are actively studied in the optical regime, applications of Airy beams in the THz or sub-THz domain are rarely explored. This work proposes a new microscopic technique leveraging a sub-THz broadband non-diffraction Airy beam as the illumination beam to improve the image quality, which is named as enhanced sub-THz microscopy (ESTM). The effectiveness of the ESTM is validated by a metallic sample, which shows that applying broadband measured information can render a better image quality than only using single-frequency information. By blocking the sample using a scattering obstacle, it is demonstrated that the self-reconstruction property of the Airy beam can efficiently suppress the distortion induced by the obstacle and good images can still be obtained. In addition, it is shown that the image quality applying a broadband Airy beam is superior to that of non-diffraction quasi-Bessel beams and other conventionally used illumination beams for microscopic technique.

Abstract:A noinvasive method for photoacoustic tomography of medical diagnoses by using an ultrasonic probe beam is presented.When a pulse laser irradiates on biological tissues,a plane ultrasonic probe beam passes through the irradiated area,and the ultrasonic probe beam interacts nonlinearly with photoacoustic tomography wave.Abundant information can be taken out from the interaction area by demodulating the probe beam.On one hand,the information can reflect the optical properties of the tissue;on the other hand,it can also reflect acoustical properties of the tissue.In the experimentation,the circular measurement configuration combined with the filtered back projection(FBP) algorithm,very high signal-to-noise ratio tomography images can be obtained.For the laser energy can be absorbed by the identity molecule of the tissues,it will provide a potential non-invasive imaging technique for biomedical diagnosis and functional imaging.

Abstract:Industrial ultrasonic tomography (UT) possesses unique advantages in visualizing multiphase medium and has received broad attention in the past decades. Facing small bubble distribution imaging, the current independent-transducer-based UT faces bottleneck problems of limited projection number and large projection diameter. To image the cross-sectional bubble distribution, an original concept of ultrasonic phase array tomography (UPAT) is proposed by introducing the ultrasound phase array (UPA) transducers and novel designed sensing strategy into UT. The UPAT emits a wide and directional acoustic beam toward the receivers, on which each element forms a narrow projection to detect small bubbles on its path. Hence, the UPAT forms a novel sensing strategy with shifting and multiangled acoustic beam scanning of the whole cross section, as well as the precise measurement on a high amount of narrow projections. To mathematically model the UPAT, the acoustic field distribution and beam steering algorithm are designed for beam scanning with shifted apertures, while the forward/inverse solutions are proposed for tomographic imaging. In numerical simulations, the eight-transducer UPAT is with much lower imaging error than the state-of-art 32-transducer transmissive/reflective UT with relative error reduced by 65.66% on average. In lab-scale experiments, the reconstructed bubble size, shape, and distribution are with good accuracy, boundary preservation, and image purity.

Abstract:Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) has rapidly developed and is capable of characterizing optical absorption properties of biological tissue with high contrast and high resolution (micrometer-scale lateral resolution). However, the conventional excitation source of rapidly diverging Gaussian beam imposes limitations on the depth of focus (DOF) in OR-PAM, which in turn affects the depth-resolving ability and detection sensitivity. Here, we proposed a flexible DOF, depth-invariant resolution photoacoustic microscopy (FDIR-PAM) with nondiffraction of Airy beams. The spatial light modulator was incorporated into the optical pathway of the excitation source with matched switching phase patterns, achieving the flexibly adjustable modulation parameters of the Airy beam. We conducted experiments on phantoms and intravital tissue to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for high sensitivity and high-resolution characterization of variable topology of tissue, offering a promising DOF of 926 mu m with an invariant lateral resolution of 3.2 mu m, which is more than 17-fold larger compared to the Gaussian beam. In addition, FDIR-PAM successfully revealed clear individual zebrafish larvae and the pigment pattern of adult zebrafishes, as well as fine morphology of cerebral vasculature in a large depth range with high resolution, which has reached an evident resolving capability improvement of 62% mean value compared with the Gaussian beam.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for generating high-efficient acoustic focusing capable of circumventing obstacles in the propagating medium. This distinct feature that is highly desirable for practical applications is realized by employing two symmetrical Airy beams, and a different type of acoustic lens is designed by using a zero-index medium to provide the required phase profile with extremely high resolution. Furthermore, the scheme has the flexibility of generating tunable focal length. We anticipate our design to open possibilities for the design of acoustic lens and have potential applications in various important scenarios such as biomedical imaging/therapy and non-destructive evaluation.

Abstract:Industrial ultrasonic tomography (UT) possesses unique benefits in nonintrusive detection of cross-sectional medium and has received broad attention in decades. Aiming at the complex bubble imaging, the conventional independent-transducer-based UT has low spatial resolution due to wide projection path and low projection number. Based on ultrasound phase array (UPA) transducers, this article proposes a sequential dynamic aperture focusing strategy for transmissive ultrasonic phase array tomography (UPAT). The emitting aperture focuses the ultrasound beam on a close distance to generate a high intensity and wide-angle acoustic field that covers multiple receivers in single excitation and further induces high amount of multiangle narrow projections, through which the measurement speed and imaging performance are substantially improved. Beyond numerical analysis on image accuracy and noise robustness, an experimental UPAT system with independent T/R channels is developed to evaluate the proposed method, where the improvement on imaging accuracy and speed are testified through qualitatively and quantitatively comparison with the state-of-art UT and the beam scanning UPAT techniques. The UPAT-focus strategy is proved to be advanced and feasible in imaging complex medium distribution.

Using Mobile-Memo to Support Knowledge Acquisition and Posting-Question in an Mobile Learning Environment *

Abstract:This study developed a mobile-memo system that supports the knowledge acquisition and posting-question to assist learners’ learning in a ML (mobile learning) environment. To understand the effectiveness of our proposed system, the data were collected from the system logs, such as the elements of multimedia used in posting-question and a questionnaire regarding the students’ learning attitude as well as satisfaction towards the use of the mobile-memo system. The experimental result showed that the mobile-memo was effective for learners to gather information in construction and reflection during the learning activities. In other words, the mobile-memo system can effectively support learners to acquire knowledge and post question relating to the learning course contents during learning activities.
Low complexity adaptive ultrasound image beamformer combined with improved multiphase apodization with cross-correlation

Abstract:In this paper, an ultrasound imaging method combined with low-complexity adaptive beamformer (LCA) and improved multiphase apodization with cross-correlation (IMPAX) is proposed to improve image resolution and contrast with low hardware cost. Firstly, the delayed echo signal is apodized by the LCA to obtain a narrow mainlobe width echo signal and LCA output. Then, multiple pairs of complementary square-wave phase apodizations are applied to the apodized echo signal to obtain corresponding signal pairs, which are used to calculate the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) matrix. Finally, the average value of the NCC matrices is filtered by 2-D means, and the filtered result is introduced as the weighting factor for the LCA output. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed LCA-IMPAX can effectively reduce the mainlobe width, suppress clutter, and be robust to noise. Compared with DAS, LCA, and MPAX, for simulated point targets, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM, -6dB) of LCA-IMPAX is reduced by 49.22%, 10.06%, and 48.67%, respectively. For simulated cyst, the CR is improved by 219.91%, 138.08%, and 103.44%, respectively. For experimental cysts, the CR is improved by an average of 145.00%, 136.14%, and 55.09%, respectively. The results of human heart data indicate that LCA-IMPAX has good imaging quality in vivo. Since the proposed method does not involve covariance matrix inversion, it can be applied in real-time imaging systems.

Abstract:Photoacoustic imaging (PAI, also called optoacoustic imaging) combines light excitation and ultrasound detection for deep-tissue imaging with light absorption contrast. PAI can map the distribution of endogenous chromophores such as oxy-hemoglobin, deoxy-hemoglobin, lipids, water, and melanin. PAI performs especially well for structural and functional imaging of blood vessels. Its centimeter-deep imaging depth and ultrasound-defined resolution make it well suited for clinical application, where systems employing a linear array ultrasound probe are most commonly used due to simplicity, flexibility, and easy integration with standard ultrasonic imaging. The existing linear array based imaging systems typically employ optical fiber bundles for light delivery, such a scheme enjoys mechanical flexibility, optical stability, and simple light coupling. However, major drawbacks associated with fiber illumination include suboptimal transmission efficiency and a lack of control of the illumination pattern. Articulated arms provide an alternative light delivery option which potentially offer high transmission efficiency, stable and flexible operation, and low cost. Despite its wide applications in cosmetology, articulated arms for light delivery were understudied in the PAI community. In this paper, we reported the fabrication and experimental evaluation of an articulated arm specifically designed for linear-array-based PAI. Without losing the flexibility provided by the linear probe. Moreover, the articulated arm can be equipped with spatial positioning devices to perform three-dimensional reconstructions.

Abstract:Background Ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) is usually realized with a ring array. It can provide better imaging performance and more tissue information by emitting and receiving the ultrasound signal in different directions simultaneously. However, USCT imaging is usually applied with the synthetic aperture (SA) emission method, which leads to a long scanning time with a large number of elements on the ring array. The echo image can provide the structural information, and has a higher resolution than maps of other parameters in USCT. Hence, we proposed plane wave (PW) imaging for ring array to acquire the echo wave and reduce the scanning time considerably. Results In this paper, an emitting and receiving process was proposed to realize plane wave imaging with a ring array. With the proposed scanning method, the number of emission events can be reduced greatly. A beamforming method based on the eigenspace-based minimum variance (ESBMV) was also combined with the scanning method. With ESBMV beamformer, the resolution and contrast ratio of reconstruction result can be maintained or even improved under a fewer-emissions condition. We validated the method using both computer simulations with Field II and phantom experiments with a ring array of 512 elements. The Verasonics ® system was used to transmit and receive the ultrasound signal in the phantom experiments. Conclusions According to the results of the experiments, the imaging results will have a better contrast ratio with a higher emitting energy. Additionally, the scanning time with the proposed method can be only one-tenth of that with the SA emission method, while the echo imaging performance still remains at a similar level or even better.
