Abstract:A tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing a benzimidazole ring and an electron-rich pyridine ring was developed, the resulting manganese complex exhibited good activity in the C-H oxidation of simple alkanes. In particular, cyclic aliphatic alkanes were transformed into ketones in very good yields (up to 89 %) by using environmentally benign H2 O2 as the terminal oxidant. This protocol was also applied successfully in benzylic C-H oxidation, giving the corresponding ketones with very good selectivities. In addition, tertiary C-H bond oxidation of complex molecules by the manganese complex showed potential utility for assembling alcohols with good selectivity in late-stage chemical synthesis.

Abstract:The successive cleavage and functionalization of C–C bonds in alcohols has become a rapidly growing field for the discovery of new transformations. However, achieving it in a direct and selective manner remains challenging because of the intrinsic inertness of C–C bonds. Herein, we report a novel and efficient protocol that enables the direct synthesis of amides via heterogeneous manganese-oxide-catalyzed successive cleavage and amidation of C–C bonds in alcohols. A wide range of primary and secondary alcohols, 1,2-diols, and even β-O-4 and β-1 lignin model compounds can undergo C–C bond cleavage smoothly to deliver one- or multiple-carbon shorter amides. Moreover, a slight modification of reaction conditions allows for the cleavage and cyanation of alcohols to access sterically hindered nitriles. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and moderate acid sites contribute to the high catalytic performance of the manganese oxides.

Abstract:Acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) of alcohols and amines using a manganese-based catalyst is able to produce aldimines, which have a wide reactivity, without underestimating the generation of a clean fuel, since as a result of this coupling, molecular hydrogen is also obtained. Therefore, the aldimine synthesis represents an interesting reaction from chemical and clean energy points of view. In this work, the computational study, via density functional theory (DFT) calculations, of a manganese-based catalyst for the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and amines, together with the elucidation of its catalytic cycle using benzene as a solvent, is carried out. Abstract:The development of heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant compounds is always important for chemistry research. Here, we report a selective aerobic oxidation of aromatic and aliphatic amines to corresponding amides over a nanorod manganese oxide (NR-MnOx) catalyst. The kinetic studies reveal that the NR-MnOx catalyzed amine-to-amide reaction proceeds the oxidative dehydrogenation of the amines into nitriles, followed by hydrolysis of nitrile into amides. The NR-MnOx exhibits fast kinetics and high selectivities in these steps, as well as hinders the by-product formation. More importantly, the NR-MnOx catalyst is stable and reusable in the continuous recycle tests with water as a sole by-product, exhibiting superior sustainability and significant advancement to outperform the traditional amide production route in acidic or basic media with toxic by-products.

Abstract:The synthesis of mono-N-methylated aliphatic primary amines has traditionally been challenging, requiring noble metal catalysts and high-pressure H2 for achieveing satisfactory yields and selectivity. Herein, we developed an approach for the selective coupling of methanol and aliphatic primary amines, without high-pressure hydrogen, using a manganese-based catalyst. Remarkably, up to 98% yields with broad substrate scope were achieved at low catalyst loadings. Notably, due to the weak base-catalyzed alcoholysis of formamide intermediates, our novel protocol not only obviates the addition of high-pressure H2 but also prevents side secondary N-methylation, supported by control experiments and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:The use of synergistic catalytic strategy can usually circumvent the intrinsic limitations of one catalytic system. In this communication, we disclose a cooperative catalysis strategy of manganese and iminium catalysis to realize selective hydroalkenylation of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. Its success stems from the LUMO activation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds with secondary amines as the organocatalyst and the synergistic HOMO activation of alkenylboronic acids with Mn2 (CO)8 Br2 . This protocol exhibits several synthetic advances, e.g., simple operation, good functional group compatibility and good regioselectivity. The theoretical calculation indicates the migratory insertion followed by demetallation-isomerization process is kinetically more favorable than Michael-like nucleophilic addition. The use of proline-derived organocatalyst can deliver the desired products in moderate enantioselectivity.

Abstract:A manganese‐catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of glycerol with amines for the synthesis of substituted 2‐methylquinoxalines, 2‐ethylbenzimidazoles, and α‐aminoketones was reported. NHC‐based pincer manganese complex featuring a pyridine backbone displayed high catalytic activity and selectivity. No external oxidants were used in these reactions and hydrogen and water were produced as the only by‐products. Glycerol is one of the important biomass‐derived feedstocks and the high‐value utilizations of glycerol have attracted much attentions in recent years. Herein, we report a manganese catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of glycerol with amines for the synthesis of substituted 2‐methylquinoxalines, 2‐ethylbenzimidazoles, and α‐aminoketones without any external oxidant. Abstract:An unprecedented Mn(I)-catalyzed selective hydroarylation and hydroalkenylation of unsaturated amides with commercially available organic boronic acids is reported. Alkenyl boronic acids have been successfully employed for the first time in Mn(I)-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond formation. A wide array of β-alkenylated amide products can be obtained in moderate to good yields, which offers practical access to five- and six-membered lactams. This protocol has predictable regio- and chemoselectivity, excellent functional group compatibility and ease of operation in air, representing a significant step-forward towards manganese-catalyzed C-C coupling.

Abstract:Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of valuable α-hydroxycarboxylic acid molecules via an acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of ethylene glycol and primary alcohols. A bench-stable manganese complex catalyzed the reaction, which is scalable, with the product being isolated with high yields and selectivities under mild conditions. The protocol is environmentally benign, producing water and hydrogen gas as the only byproducts. Methanol can also be used as a C1 source for producing the platform molecule lactic acid, with a high turnover of >104. The methodology was also used to functionalize alcohols derived from natural products and fatty acids. Furthermore, it was applied for synthesizing α-amino acid, α-thiocarboxylic acid, and several drugs and bioactive molecules, including endogenous metabolites, Danshensu, Enalapril, Lisinopril, and Rosmarinic acid. Preliminary mechanistic studies were performed to shed light on the mechanism involved in the reaction.

Abstract:Aliphatic PNP pincer-supported earth-abundant manganese(I) dicarbonyl complexes behave as effective catalysts for the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of a wide range of alcohols to esters under base-free conditions. The reaction proceeds under neat conditions, with modest catalyst loading and releasing only H2 as byproduct. Mechanistic aspects were addressed by synthesizing key species related to the catalytic cycle (characterized by X-ray structure determination, multinuclear (1H, 13C, 31P, 15N, 55Mn) NMR, infrared spectroscopy, inter alia), by studying elementary steps connected to the postulated mechanism, and by resorting to DFT calculations. As in the case of related ruthenium and iron PNP catalysts, the dehydrogenation results from cycling between the amido and amino-hydride forms of the PNP-Mn(CO)2 scaffold. Abstract:Mn(I)-catalyzed enantioselective C-C bond-forming reactions represent a great challenge in homogeneous catalysis primarily due to a limited understanding of its mechanistic principles. Herein, we have developed an interesting catalytic strategy that leverages a synergistic combination of a dimeric manganese(I) catalyst and a chiral aminocatalyst to address this issue. A range of conjugated dienals and trienals can exclusively proceed 1,4-hydroalkenylation by using readily available aromatic and aliphatic alkenyl boronic acids as coupling partners, producing a rich library of skipped diene aldehydes in synthetically useful yields and high levels of enantioselectivities. Notably, downstream transformations of these products can not only afford a concise approach to construct enantioenriched skipped trienes but also realize enantioselective total synthesis of analogues to (-)-Blepharocalyxin D in four steps. DFT calculations suggest the 1,4-hydroalkenylation is kinetically more favorable than 1,6-hydroalkenylation.

Abstract:Catalytic Markovnikov-selective hydroamination of unactivated al-kenes, in particular by using secondary amines as nucleophiles and/or in an intermolecular setting, remains a challenge. Here we address this problem by developing a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed hy-droamination reaction based on a bimetallic redox-triggered oxida-tive amination pathway. This system enables the use of dioxygen as a sustainable oxidant that is compatible with free amines, while suppressing the facile radical oxygenation that leads to classical Drago-Mukaiyama oxidation. We demonstrate intra-and intermo-lecular formal addition of secondary amines across unactivated alkenes as well as vinylarenes at ambient temperature. The scope of this method also encompasses alternative nitrogen nucleophiles, such as sulfonamides, amides, and carbamates. Stoichiometric reac-tions of well-defined organocobalt complexes provide direct evi-dence for the proposed key amination process.

Abstract:Chemodivergent synthesis by transition metal catalyst is a straightforward and sustainable approach to achieving valuable organic compounds. Especially, the chemodivergent dehydrogenative couplings of alcohols with organic motifs to develop various saturated and unsaturated compounds are highly environmentally benign due to reduced waste generation. In this concept review, we presented the 3d transition metal (Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni)‐catalyzed chemodivergent synthesis of imines and amines, saturated and unsaturated carbonyl/alcohol compounds, saturated and unsaturated nitriles, N‐heterocycles, and N‐/C‐alkylated indoles. The discussed reaction commanded two or three different products with high chemoselectivity by changing specific reaction parameters, but keeping the catalyst unchanged. Generally, the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) provides unsaturated moieties, whereas the borrowing‐hydrogen (BH) process results in saturated compounds.

Abstract:An efficient Mn-catalyzed aerobic oxidative hydroxyazidation of olefins for synthesis of β-azido alcohols has been developed. The aerobic oxidative generation of azido radical employing air as the terminal oxidant is disclosed as the key process for this transformation. The reaction is appreciated by its broad substrate scope, inexpensive Mn-catalyst, high efficiency, easy operation under air, and mild conditions at room temperature. This chemistry provides a novel approach to high value-added β-azido alcohols, which are useful precursors of aziridines, β-amino alcohols, and other important N- and O-containing heterocyclic compounds. This chemistry also provides an unexpected approach to azido substituted cyclic peroxy alcohol esters. A DFT calculation indicates that Mn catalyst plays key dual roles as an efficient catalyst for the generation of azido radical and a stabilizer for peroxyl radical intermediate. Further calculation reasonably explains the proposed mechanism for the control of C-C bond cleavage or for the formation of β-azido alcohols.

Abstract:The performances of heterogeneous catalysts can be effectively tuned by changing the catalyst structures. Here we report a controllable nitrile synthesis from alcohol ammoxidation, where the nitrile hydration side reaction could be efficiently prevented by changing the manganese oxide catalysts.α-Mn2O3 based catalysts are highly selective for nitrile synthesis, but MnO2-based catalysts includingα,β,γ, andδphases favour the amide production from tandem ammoxidation and hydra-tion steps. Multiple structural, kinetic, and spectroscopic investigations reveal that water decompo-sition is hindered on α-Mn2O3, thus to switch off the nitrile hydration. In addition, the selectivi-ty-control feature of manganese oxide catalysts is mainly related to their crystalline nature rather than oxide morphology, although the morphological issue is usually regarded as a crucial factor in many reactions.

Abstract:With the development and widespread use of transition metal catalysts, C-H activation has become a hot topic in organic synthesis, especially in the construction of C-C bond of organic compounds. As an important and cheap catalyst, manganese complex has shown great potential for catalyzing C-H activation both in academic and industrial applications. In this paper, the mechanism of manganese-catalyzed dehydrogenative [4+2] annulation by C-H/N-H activation was investigated systematically with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations in 1,4-dioxane solvent. In detail, we use M06-L/[SDD: 6-311+ G(d,p)(SMD)]//M06-L/[LANL2DZ: 6-31G(d)] to examine the Gibbs free energy, structure and other properties of possible intermediates and transition states in this catalytic cycle. By comprehensive comparison and discussion, we obtained a favorable pathway consisting of five steps: (1) catalyst initiation occurred with the assistance of bromine anion rather than imide to form active catalyst; (2) alkyne inserted into the active catalyst to generate a seven-membered manganacycle after dissociation of a carbon monoxide; (3) double bond migration happened in this seven-membered manganacycle to form a product precursor; (4) the product precursor would dissociate by beta-H elimination and generated product isoquinoline and active Mn-H complex; (5) the active Mn-H complex was subsequently combined with an imine followed by dehydrogenative C-H activation to complete the whole catalytic cycle. In this context, the reason for the highly atom-economical C-H activation by direct dehydrogenation (eliminates the necessity for oxidants or additives) has been clarified by this mechanism. The present study was aimed at further understanding of Mn(I)-catalyzed dehydrogenative C-H activation, and provided more theoretical basis for future more Mn-catalyzed C-H activation.
