Abstract:Understanding the interactions between surface water and groundwater is of considerable significance for managing water resources and protecting ecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas. This study investigated the hydrochemistry, stable isotopes (D–18O) and radioisotopes (222Rn) to identify the interactions between surface water and groundwater in Delingha, a typical arid area in Northwest China. In this area, the surface water mainly consists of the Bayin River, which flows from the north mountainous area to the southwest terminal lake areas (Hurleg and Tuosu lakes), and the groundwater also generally flows from north to southwest and is characterized by a single-layered sandy and gravelly aquifer in the alluvial–proluvial plain and multi-layered aquifers in the alluvial–lacustrine plain. The stable isotopes reveal that the water bodies in the plain are mainly recharged by precipitation in the mountainous area. The hydrochemistry and isotopes results (TDS, D–18O, and 222Rn) combined with the groundwater table indicate that the surface water and groundwater interactions exhibit spatial variability. It was found that the Bayin River generally infiltrates into aquifer in the alluvial–proluvial plain and repeatedly interchanges with groundwater in the alluvial–lacustrine plain. The flux rate of groundwater discharge in the alluvial–lacustrine plain is estimated to be 0.55–2.49 × 10-4 m3/(s·m) by the 222Rn mass balance model, showing a decreasing tendency along the flow path. In addition, the flux rate of river leakage occurring in the upper and middle areas of the alluvial–lacustrine plain is estimated to be 1.65–3.19 × 10-4 m3/(s·m). These findings provide a hydrological conceptual model and valuable flux data of water interchange for water resource management.

Abstract:The frozen period interaction of groundwater and lakes is crucial for hydrological properties and aquatic ecology in cold and arid regions. In this study, we investigate the spatial hydrochemical characteristics, influencing factors in the Hulun Lake basin. The hydrochemical type of lake water exhibits Na-HCO 3 -SO 4 -Cl, while river shows a primary classification of Na-Ca-HCO 3 . Groundwater in the eastern and western regions is characterized by Na-SO 4 -Cl and Na-HCO 3 , respectively. Silicic acid and ion exchange predominantly influence groundwater chemistry in the western region, whereas evaporation and concentration play a major role in the eastern region. Total dissolved solids, Cl − , and F − emerge as the primary influencing factors of hydrochemical components in the Hulun Lake basin. Ion content decreased from the southern to the northern region, with the lowest value occurring near the Urson River. The high-temperature water body is primarily distributed in the central and southern regions of the lake. Based on characteristic ions and partial characteristics of ice surface temperature, the potential groundwater discharge areas near the inlet of the Xinkai River, the central and southern region are determined. This study reveals the hydrochemical characteristics, vertical ice distribution, and provides a scientific foundation for water resource management in cold and arid regions.

Abstract:The exchange rate is often characterized by spatio‐temporal heterogeneity, but the spatio‐temporal patterns of exchange rate have rarely been quantified, especially in water transfer lakes. This study was conducted from March to July 2021. The tracer data of δ2H, δ18O (n=121), 222Rn (n=522), Cl (n=151), TDS (n=155) in lake water, shallow groundwater (7 ~ 10 m), deep groundwater (25 ~ 40 m), and an improved single‐well radon model were applied in 3 (A, B and C) typical areas (~1 km2) of the Hongze lake. The results show that during the water transfer period (March to May) the rising lake level from normal water level (13 m sal) to the storage level (13.5 m asl), caused the exchange rate to increase from ‐6.3×10‐7 m/s to 33.2×10‐7 m/s. All tracers in groundwater of A and C were continuously diluted by lake water, but shown a better mixing of the lake water, shallow and deep groundwater in area B with a water transfer channel/river (~ ‐100 m3/s). In rainstorm season (June and July), the exchange rate changed from 3.4×10‐7 m/s to ‐44.8×10‐7 m/s due to the high groundwater table (13 ~ 15 m asl) caused by flood and rainstorm. The rainstorm imposed the inflow of both shallow and deep groundwater into lake in river areas (A and B), but only shallow groundwater recharged lake in non‐river area (C). Additionally, the exchange rate of the whole lake was estimated by the water balance equation, which varied between ‐1011 m3/s ~ 458 m3/s with an average of ‐26 m3/s. Finally, a conceptual model of exchange rate among lake, shallow and deep groundwater under spatio‐temporal heterogeneity is proposed. The findings offer better understanding of the spatio‐temporal heterogeneity of lake‐groundwater interaction and the effects on lake water balance and recharge systems. Abstract:The effects of anthropogenic land use on the water quality of reservoir-based water sources are understudied. We trained a self-organizing map (SOM) to measure the spatial pattern of nutrients over the course of a year in 61 reservoirs located in eastern China. In the linear regression model and one-way analyses of variance, we found that water quality was influenced by period of the year (flood, low, and normal periods based on rainfall conditions) and reservoir altitude (plains vs. mountains). Our results indicated that land use metrics measured in aquatic-terrestrial interfaces significantly influenced the water quality of reservoirs. The land use intensity (LUI) and the proportion of construction land had a positive correlation with ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) concentrations, and redundancy analysis indicated that the percent of landscape (PLAND) represented by construction land was positively correlated with CODMn, NH3-N, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. The proportion of cropland was not correlated with any water quality property except for CODMn concentration. The total explained variance for water quality was highest when the scale was large (the area defined by a 1500 m radius around the reservoir), indicating that management which ensures water safety should be carried out at this scale.
Identification of shallow groundwater recharge and circulation in an intensive agricultural area of the Sanjiang Plain, China, based on hydrochemistry, isotopes and hydrogeological conditions

Abstract:The dynamics of the water table is an important control on the connection of groundwater to land surface processes. Agricultural intensification has resulted in a significant decline in the groundwater table in the eastern part of the Sanjiang Plain, China. This decline may have caused significant changes in groundwater recharge and circulation, with implications for natural resources and the environment. In this study, hydrogeological (hydraulic head observations, unsaturated zone lithology), hydrochemical (major ions, redox-sensitive parameters, metasilicic acid) and isotopic (δD and δ 18 O) data was interpreted through spatial analysis, scatter plots and multivariate statistical methods to construct a conceptual model of shallow groundwater circulation in the Sanjiang Plain following decades of agricultural development. The distribution of the hydraulic head clarified the direction of groundwater flow, and the stable isotope compositions confirmed that shallow groundwaters mainly originated from precipitation and river water. Shallow groundwater levels and enriched groundwater isotopic compositions along the Songhua River and in the upper reaches of the Naoli River indicated some influence by evaporation. The relatively high nitrate concentration and coupling of isotope characteristics showed that sandy unsaturated zones enabled groundwater to be easily influenced by land surface processes. In the Jiansanjiang District and Naolihe Basin, the clayey unsaturated zones inhibited the connection between groundwater and the surface. Redox-sensitive components indicated that the groundwater features a reducing environment and weak groundwater update capability. If the current rate of exploitation continues in the Jiansanjiang District, the groundwater levels will continue to decline.

Abstract:Groundwater resource is the basic power for the socio-economic development of arid-inland basins, and is also the major factor affecting the ecological environment of the Huangqihai Lake. As a typical study area of arid-inland basins, with the lowering of groundwater levels in recent years, the total area of the Huangqihai Lake decreases and even faces the risk of drying up. To quantitatively analyze the spatial-temporal evolution of groundwater resources in the Huangqihai Basin and the transformation relationship between lake water and groundwater, a numerical simulation model of groundwater flow in the Huangqihai Basin is established. The model is calibrated and validated by using long-term observation data from 2010 to 2016. The simulation results show that the accumulative deficit of groundwater storage in the Huangqihai Basin is 1.5×108 m3 from 2010 to 2016, and over-exploitation of groundwater is the critical reason for the negative water balance in this area. The Sobol method is used to identify the controlling factors affecting the changes of groundwater resources in this area. The sensitivity of eight main parameters affecting the groundwater system is evaluated by using four objective functions: lake stage, lake leakage, groundwater storage and groundwater discharge to lake. There are significant differences in sensitivity analysis results of model parameters under different objective functions. The first two functions are significantly affected by the horizontal permeability and lake leakage rate, while the last two are mainly affected by exploitation and recharge from precipitation and irrigation. It is proved that the influence of over-exploitation of groundwater is the main controlling factor of the depletion of water resources and shrinking of lake area in the Huangqihai Basin. The results of this study can provide technical support and scientific decision making for the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources and the protection of surrounding ecological environment in the Huangqihai Basin.
Characterizing the interaction of groundwater with surface water and precipitation in the Mongolian Plateau in China

Abstract:Due to the arid climate, groundwater is a vital water resource for ecosystems such as those associated with Dalinor Lake in the Inner Mongolian Plateau, China. This research studied the groundwater circulation mechanisms in Dalinor Lake and surrounding areas and their contribution to surface water, based on remote sensing and environmental isotopes analyses. Using Landsat satellite data, it was found that the lake area of Dalinor Lake decreased by 12% between 1986 and 2021. The shrinkage rate increased from 0.31 km 2 /year in 1986–2005 to 1.24 km 2 /year in 2005–2021. The groundwater contribution to the lake is 1.49 × 10 8 m 3 /year. Soil profiles and a rainfall simulation test revealed that precipitation infiltration provides limited recharge to groundwater. The groundwater stable isotopic signature (δD = –88.55‰, δ 18 O = –10.01‰), which is more depleted than local precipitation (δD = –63.83‰, δ 18 O = –8.76‰), implies that local precipitation is not the main source of groundwater recharge. The groundwater stable isotopic signature in different river sources is diverse, indicating the spatial specificity of groundwater recharge sources. Groundwater and river water have mantle-derived helium ( R / R a > 1) and high tritium concentrations, so it is speculated that groundwater in the Dalinor Lake and its surrounding area is recharged by modern precipitation (post 1960s) outside the study area through fast channels, such as fault systems. This study provides information necessary for effective water management in the Inner Mongolian Plateau.

Abstract:It has been known that groundwater-lake water interaction plays an important role in mass exchange between land and lakes. However, most of the lakes in the world freeze during the winter, and few studies of groundwater and surface water interaction (groundwater discharge tracing) focus on ice-covered lakes. This study investigated groundwater discharge into a large ice-covered lake, Xiao Qaidam Lake in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), using satellite remote sensing and chemical and isotopic tracing. Analysis of chemical components, stable isotopes (D, 18O) and 222Rn revealed that groundwater discharge occurred in the western and southern portions of Xiao Qaidam Lake. Remote sensing data (the distribution of and variation in lake surface temperature, LST) revealed these locations of groundwater discharge and indicated additional groundwater discharge in areas of springs. Based on the regression model between LST and 222Rn activity in lake water and 222Rn mass balance model, the groundwater discharge into Xiao Qaidam Lake was estimated to be (2.77 ± 0.26) × 105 m3/d, which is slightly higher than river water input at summer. In addition, this study also suggests that ice melting process should be considered when tracing groundwater discharge into an ice-covered lake, and that the LST distribution during the icing period is better than the LST variation for tracing groundwater discharge because the ice eliminated noise from wind and surface water. The study provides insight into the tracing of groundwater discharge into large ice-covered lakes in the TP and elsewhere.

Abstract:Small geographically isolated ponds provide a multitude of ecological functions and services, but water table fluctuations alter the magnitude of these services. Understanding temporal and spatial changes of surface water levels in the watershed, and their spatial variability, is critical for restoration and protection of small ponds. A biweight spatial consistency test was employed to quantify the seasonal variability of surface water tables for 50 ponds and hydrological connectivity models, and land use metrics, topographic characteristics, and irrigation needs, for groundwater, were introduced into the model to identify influencing factors. The spatial difference of water level changes in the rice season was greater than the wheat season while water table increased in the wheat season and declined in the rice season. Continuous runoff with complete surface hydrological connectivity of ponds, which was strongly related to precipitation, occurred only one time during the study period. Water level dynamics were largely uncorrelated to surface hydrological connectivity but were linked to watershed and pond size. By evaluating irrigation water requirements, irrigation was a primary human management factor affecting the water table changes in ponds. Groundwater also enriched influence factors that estimated water level variation in ponds, and these results will provide support for improved water resource management and ponds protection purposes.

Abstract:Fast population growth and rapid economic and societal development drive the massive extraction of groundwater, increasing complications for the relationship between surface water and groundwater. To study the surface water and groundwater interactions in the north and south tributaries of the Wei River (Xin and Jing Rivers), China, 17 surface water samples and 30 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed. Hydrochemistry and stable isotopes were used to study the surface water and groundwater interactions in the two rivers. The results showed that the main hydrochemical type of both surface water and groundwater in the Xin River watershed was HCO3-Ca•Mg, while that of the Jing River water was SO4•Cl-Na, and groundwater was of HCO3-Na type. The hydraulic connectivity between the surface water and groundwater of the two rivers was generally weak. The contributions of surface water, precipitation and lateral groundwater flow to groundwater in the Xin River were 48%, 34% and 18%, respectively, whereas in Jing River they were 27%, 51% and 22%. The river in the south of the Wei River has greater hydraulic connectivity than the river in the north. The results provide scientific basis for the integrated management of surface water and groundwater in the areas.

Abstract:Groundwater is one of the key sources of water recharge in Hulun Lake. In order to trace the location of the confined aquifer of the deep groundwater that recharges the lake, hydrogeochemical characteristic analysis and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope sampling and analysis were performed on the lake water, phreatic water and multi-layer cretaceous confined water in the same region of the Hulun Lake basin. The hydraulic relationships between the lake and various aquifers were then revealed through the use of hydrogen radioisotopes. The results show that the lake water, phreatic water and confined water are of the HCO3−Na type, and the content of stable isotopes (δD, δ18O) and radioisotopes (δ3H) is in the order of "confined water < phreatic water < lake water". The main influencing factor of hydrochemical evolution in the phreatic water is the dissolution of feldspar; its age is about 26.66 years, and its renewal rate is nearly 3.75%. The main influencing factor of hydrochemical evolution in the K1y1, K1y2 and K1d1 Cretaceous confined water is evaporite dissolution (i.e., halite, gypsum); their renewal rate is less than 1%, and the discharge condition deteriorates with the increase in the aquifer roof burial depth. Phreatic water in the Jalainur Depression Zone supplies Hulun Lake under the condition of the existence of permafrost cover. The K1d2 confined water of the Lower Cretaceous–Damoguaihe Formation Coal Group II, with the deepest roof burial depth (441 m), shows significant differences in hydrochemistry, δD, δ18O and δ3H from the other K1y1, K1y2 and K1d1 Cretaceous confined waters in the same basin. The renewal rate (nearly 4.32%) of the K1d2 confined water is better than that of the phreatic water, and its hydrochemical characteristics are similar to those of the lake water and phreatic water, indicating that the Cuogang Fault and Xishan Fault, caused by crustal faults, resulted in the hydraulic relationship between the K1d2 confined water, lake water and phreatic water, resulting in drastic interannual changes in the lake water level. This study of lake–groundwater interactions in cold and arid regions can provide a theoretical basis for lakes' sustainable development.

Abstract:Groundwater salinization, a major eco-environmental problem in arid and semi-arid areas, can accelerate soil salinization, reducing crop productivity and imbalances in ecosystem diversity. This study classified water samples collected from the Ulansuhai Lake basin into five clusters using self-organizing maps (SOM). On this basis, multiple isotopes (δ18Owater, δD, 87Sr/86Sr, δ18Osulfate and δ34S) and isotopic models (Rayleigh fractionation and Bayesian isotope mixing models) were used to identify and quantify the genesis and evolution of groundwater salinization. The results showed that the samples were brackish or saline water, and the hydrochemical types were dominated by Na + K-Cl (SO4). It has been proved that the processes associated with groundwater salinization in the Ulansuhai Lake basin were dominated by water-rock interaction and human inputs. Among them, evaporite dissolution contributed substantially to groundwater salinity. Furthermore, salt inputs from human activities cannot be negligible. Based on the model calculations, evaporite dissolution accounted for the most significant proportion of all sources, with a mean value of 53 %. In addition, human inputs from regular agricultural activities (28 % from sewage and manure and 8 % from fertilizers) constituted another vital source of groundwater salinization associated with extensive agricultural activities in the study area. This study's results can deepen our understanding of the genesis of groundwater salinization and the evolution of the agricultural drainage lake basin. This knowledge will assist the Environmental Protection Department in developing effective policies for groundwater management in the Yellow River Basin.
Seasonal river–lake-groundwater coupling simulation and groundwater overexploitation and ecological environment assessment in the Aiding Lake Basin, NW China

Abstract:The long-standing, irrational development and exploitation of water resources in the Aiding Lake Basin (ALB), coupled with excessive groundwater extraction, have led to the gradual depletion of Aiding Lake, the disappearance of Karez wells, the depletion of spring water, and the deterioration of the ecological environment, all of which are serious threats to the economy and survival and welfare of inhabitants. To address the complexities associated with the staggered distribution of natural rivers and artificial canals within the agricultural irrigated region of the ALB, an inverse computation method to gauge canal water requirements was used in building an intelligent simulation of water diversion and conveyance, incorporating different water use methodologies for complex canal systems within the irrigated region. Additionally, this paper characterizes the interaction between the catchment and conveyance section of the Karez wells and the underground aquifer based on the seasonal river module to simulate the entire flow process of the Karez well system, from water extraction and conveyance to groundwater recharge by infiltration. This study presents a coupled simulation model of seasonal river–lake-groundwater interactions in the ALB, where groundwater is simulated under both steady and unsteady flows. The findings indicate that from 2013 to 2022, the annual average groundwater recharge within the ALB was approximately 1.048 billion m 3 , while the discharge was 1.221 billion m 3 , with an annual average groundwater overexploitation of 173 million m 3 . Furthermore, the long-term overexploitation of groundwater has had a direct impact on the ecological environment, resulting in a survival crisis for natural vegetation except in the upper vegetative zone of Aiding Lake, which has good groundwater recharge conditions.

Abstract:A linked river-irrigation-lake system exhibits intricate and dynamic hydrochemical variations, closely related to changes in natural conditions and anthropogenic activities. However, little is known about the sources, migration and transformation of hydrochemical composition, and the driving mechanisms, in such systems. In this study, the hydrochemical characteristics and processes in the linked Yellow River-Hetao Irrigation District-Lake Ulansuhai system were studied, based on a comprehensive hydrochemical and stable isotope analysis of water samples collected during spring, summer, and autumn. The results showed that the water bodies in the system were weakly alkaline with a pH range of 8.05–8.49. The concentrations of hydrochemical ions showed an increasing trend in the water flow direction. Total dissolved solids (TDS) were less than 1000 mg/L (freshwater) in the Yellow River and the irrigation canals, and increased to more than 1800 mg/L (saltwater) in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. The dominant hydrochemical types varied from SO4•Cl–Ca•Mg and HCO3–Ca•Mg types in the Yellow River and the irrigation canals to Cl–Na type in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. The ion concentrations in the Yellow River, the irrigation canals, and the drainage ditches were highest during summer, while ion concentrations in Lake Ulansuhai were highest during spring. The hydrochemistry of the Yellow River and the irrigation canals was mainly affected by rock weathering, while evaporation was the principal controlling factor in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. Water-rock interactions including the dissolution of evaporites and silicates, the precipitation of carbonates, and cation exchange were the main sources of hydrochemical compositions in this system. Anthropogenic inputs had a low impact on the hydrochemistry. Therefore, greater attention should be paid in future to hydrochemical variations, especially salt ions, in the management of linked river-irrigation-lake system water resources.

Assessing catchment-scale groundwater discharge: Optimal tracers and factors analysis

Abstract:Identifying streamwater-groundwater interactions (SGI) is crucial for effective water resource management, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Despite the effectiveness of tracers in detecting these interactions, their large-scale application is challenged by the variability in tracer characteristics and natural conditions. This study addresses these challenges through extensive research across seven watersheds (7636-60,916 km2) in China's Loess Plateau (CLP). We utilized multiple physicochemical and stable isotope tracers (δ2H and δ18O) to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations and controlling factors of SGI, and to estimate uncertainties in quantifying SGI using various indicators during unidirectional water exchange periods. Our findings indicated that groundwater discharge into streamwater dominates SGI in the CLP, with mean discharge ratios (the percentage of river flow that originates from groundwater discharge) varying from 10% to 57%. Significant spatial variability was observed both across and within watersheds. The central watersheds exhibited lower discharge ratios (23 ± 11%) compared to the northern (29 ± 12%) and southern (25 ± 13%) watersheds. The upper reaches showed higher discharge ratios (28 ± 12%) compared to the middle and lower reaches (22 ± 8%). Loess thickness and vegetation primarily limit groundwater discharge by affecting groundwater storage and water flow velocity. The utilization of individual isotopic or hydrochemical indicators introduces large uncertainties in quantifying groundwater discharge ratios due to isotope fractionation or water-rock interaction, while the combination of these two indicators can reduce uncertainties in quantifying SGI. This study provides valuable insights for selecting environmental tracers to quantify SGI, contributing to sustainable water resource management in arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract:Tracing lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD) is essential for understanding the hydrological cycle and water chemistry behaviour of lakes. LGD usually exhibits large spatial variability, but there are few reports on quantitatively revealing the spatial patterns of LGD at the whole lake scale. This study investigated the spatial patterns of LGD in Daihai Lake, a typical closed inland lake in northern China, based on the stable isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) of groundwater, surface water, and sediment pore water (SPW). The results showed that there were significant differences between the δ2H and δ18O values of different water bodies in the Daihai Lake Basin: groundwater < SPW < lake water. The LGD through SPW was found to be an important recharge pathway for the lake. Accordingly, stable isotopes of SPW showed that LGD in the northeastern and northwestern of Daihai Lake was significantly greater both horizontally and vertically than that in the other regions, and the proportions of groundwater in SPW in these two regions were 55.53% and 29.84%, respectively. Additionally, the proportion of groundwater in SPW showed a significant increase with profile depth, and the proportion reached 100% at 50 cm below the sediment surface in the northeastern of the lake where the LGD intensity was strongest. The total LGD to Daihai Lake was 1.47 × 107 m3/a, while the LGD in the northeastern and northwestern of the lake exceeded 1.9 × 106 m3/a. This study provides new insights into assessing the spatial patterns of LGD and water resource management in lakes.

Abstract:Groundwater and artificial reservoirs are in a continuous dynamic interaction that can affect not only water quantity but the quality. In this paper, taking the DR (Doumen Reservoir) as an example, the level dynamic changes between the DRTS (Doumen Reservoir Test Section) and groundwater were discussed, and the water quality used by SFE (single-factor evaluation) and WQI (water quality index) method were analyzed. A coupling model is presented to quantify the leakage impact range and groundwater budget and regionalize the impact of surface water on regional groundwater quality. The results show that the level dynamics of the reservoir and groundwater are highly consistent, with a cross-correlation coefficient of 0.85 and a lag time of about 7 days. The reservoir recharges the groundwater with an increase-decrease-stationary wave dynamic potential. After 3 years of operation of the DR, the groundwater still is recharged, the groundwater level will rise obviously, with a maximum of 8.5 m. The amount of surface water recharged is always 0. NH3-N, and COD will have varying degrees of impact, both of which are mainly the pollution halo around North Lake. The results can provide support for water resources management and environmental protection of urban plain reservoirs.

Abstract:Lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD) as a hidden hydrologic process has been widely found to affect water and nutrient balance in various lakes, but a comprehensive research on both spatial and temporal variations of LGD and associated nutrient fluxes was poorly conducted. Herein, this study elucidated their spatio-temporal variations and underlying factors of a typical lake in front of hillocks with spatially variable topography and hydrogeology, and intense seasonal groundwater-lake exchange, within central Yangtze River basin. The 222 Rn mass balance model was used in conjunction with hydrochemistry, water isotope, and nutrient data. The results showed that the overall LGD rate and related N/P fluxes were clearly higher in the wet season than in the dry season, for which the stronger evaporation relative to precipitation, more groundwater recharge from agricultural irrigation or aquacultural pond infiltration, and more N/P input from anthropogenic or aquacultural activities could be responsible. In the wet season, the area with more recharge from irrigating water or fish pond water infiltration and associated extensive agricultural or aquacultural activities, had the significantly highest LGD rate and related N/P fluxes. In the dry season, the area with the deepest water depth and largest topographic slope, exhibited the significantly highest LGD rate and slightly higher LGD-related N/P fluxes due to relatively low groundwater N/P concentrations. This study enriched the understanding on LGD and related nutrient fluxes in the perspective of both spatial and temporal variations, taking a new type of lakes (i.e., lakes in the transitional zone of hills and plains in temperate climate) as a typical case.

Abstract:A clear identification of the hydrochemical processes in groundwater systems is critical for the management and protection of alternative water resources. The Dagu River Basin (DRB) has become one of the most concerning areas due to the typical geographical conditions and intensive human disturbance. In this study, the spatiotemporal variations of groundwater hydrochemical characteristics were discriminated based on the self-organizing maps (SOM) clustering results from 2001 to 2017. Simultaneously, their main governing factors were also identified according to the composite properties of hydrogen and oxygen isotopic evidence, hydrochemical facies evolution diagram (HFE-D), chloro-alkaline indices (CAI) values, and the enrichment of nitrogen. Analysis results indicated that the long-term evolution of hydrochemical signatures basically conformed to the trends of rising in the dry season and falling in the rainy season. Total dissolved solids (TDS) fluctuated from 187.90 mg/L to 2294.81 mg/L, with an average of 881.77 mg/L. Moreover, the nitrate concentrations in the river basin varied significantly from 0.70 mg/L to 605.32 mg/L. The unconfined aquifer beneath DRB was experiencing freshening gradually, while some other samples were still subjected to the interference of environmental pollution. Spatio-temporal variations in the respective clusters demonstrated that natural factors including precipitation infiltration, evaporation, and water-rock interactions played vital roles in the samples of Clusters I-III, V, and VIII, while the samples of Cluster VII were influenced by seawater intrusion; and those of Clusters IV and VI were mainly affected by nitrate and nitrite contamination. This study suggests that the SOM connected with stable isotope analysis, HFE-Diagram, CAI values, and correlation analysis could be successfully used to interpret nonlinear and high-dimensional multivariate systems and provide supplementary information about the dominant mechanisms controlling the regional groundwater evolution.
