Abstract:The interference of the direct and ground-reflected sound waves is significantly affected by volumetric scattering in the atmosphere, such as scattering by turbulence and forest. In the present article, the existing theory describing this interference is generalized to three somewhat independent but equally important cases. First, the attenuation of the direct and ground-reflected waves caused by backscattering is addressed. Second, the existing theory is extended for statistically quasi-homogeneous turbulence in which the variances and length scales of the temperature and wind velocity fluctuations depend on the height above the ground. Third, the existing theory, which was previously formulated only for near-horizontal sound propagation, is generalized to slanted sound propagation as pertinent to elevated sound sources. Numerical results for slanted propagation demonstrate that atmospheric turbulence can significantly increase the sound pressure level at the interference minima. The extended theory of the interference of the direct and ground-reflected waves in the atmosphere with volumetric scattering is important for practical applications, such as auralization of flying aircraft and sound propagation in a forest, and can be adapted to radio wave propagation.

Abstract:The theory of sound propagation in a turbulent atmosphere near the impedance ground is presented. It is assumed that the monochromatic source and receiver are located above the ground, and there is no temperature or wind velocity stratification in the atmosphere. A formula for the mean square sound pressure at the receiver is obtained and studied analytically and numerically as a function of different parameters of a problem: the variance and integral length scale of atmospheric inhomogeneities, the horizontal distance between the source and receiver, the value of impedance of the ground, etc. Theoretical results obtained are also compared with data from laboratory experiment modeling sound propagation in an atmosphere with temperature fluctuations near the ground. The experiment was carried out at Ecole Centrale de Lyon. The agreement between theoretical and experimental results is generally good. Abstract:As sound propagates through the atmosphere, turbulence causes fluctuations in the signal power and phase. These fluctuations complicate the signal processing required to detect, locate, and identify elevated sources. This presentation evaluates a model that assumes a gamma distribution describes the power and a wrapped normal distribution describes the phase. The gamma distribution approximates a log-normal distribution when the normalized power variance is small compared to one and an exponential distribution when the normalized power variance is one. The wrapped normal distribution approximates a normal distribution when the phase variance is small and a uniform distribution when the phase variance is large. In 2018, we measured vertical and slanted sound propagation at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). The ground-borne source emitted tones in the range 600–3500 Hz, and several microphones were mounted to a meteorological tower up to 130 m high. Overall, the gamma power, wrapped normal phase model accurately approximated the NWTC data across a wide range of scattering regimes. This presentation also discusses the largest discrepancies.

Abstract:The sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere fluctuates in amplitude and phase. This phenomenon, known as acoustic scintillation, is caused by random fluctuations in the acoustic refractive index of the air induced by atmospheric turbulence. Auralization techniques should consider this phenomenon to increase the realism of the synthetic sound. This paper proposes a physics-based formulation to model sequences of log-amplitude and phase fluctuations of a sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere. This method applies to slanted and vertical propagation of the sound, which is useful for simulating elevated noise sources such as aircraft, drones, and wind turbines. The theoretical framework is based on the spatial correlation functions for the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations for spherical waves, the von Kármán spectrum, and similarity theories to model atmospheric turbulence. Two applications with audio files are presented to demonstrate the applicability of this method to tonal and broadband noise.
Performance bounds for passive sensor arrays operating in a turbulent medium: plane-wave analysis

Abstract:The performance bounds of a passive acoustic array operating in a turbulent medium with fluctuations described by a von Kármán spectrum are investigated. This treatment considers a single, monochromatic, plane-wave source at near-normal incidence. A line-of-sight propagation path is assumed. The primary interests are in calculating the Cramer-Rao lower bounds of the azimuthal and elevational angles of arrival and in observing how these bounds change with the introduction of additional unknowns, such as the propagation distance, turbulence parameters, and signal-to-noise ratio. In both two and three dimensions, it is found that for large values of the index-of-refraction variance, the Cramer-Rao lower bounds of the angles of arrival increase significantly at large values of the normalized propagation distance. For small values of the index-of-refraction variance and normalized propagation distance, the signal-to-noise ratio is found to be the limiting factor. In the two-dimensional treatment, it is found that the estimate of the angle of arrival will decouple from the estimates of the other parameters with the appropriate choice of array geometry. In three dimensions, again with an appropriate choice of array geometry, the estimates of the azimuth and elevation will decouple from the estimates of the other parameters, but due to the constraints of the model, will remain coupled to one another.

Abstract:The impacts of surface waves on the steady near-surface wind profiles in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are studied based on the Ekman theory, modified by introducing a wave-induced component on the total stress. An analytic solution is presented for the wave-modified Ekman model for an eddy viscosity coefficient varying linearly with height. The solution can be determined by the two-dimensional wavenumber spectrum of ocean waves, the wave-growth or decay rate, the geostrophic wind velocity, the Coriolis parameter and the densities of air and water. Wind profiles are calculated as examples for two cases: one with a monochromatic wave and the other with a fully-developed wind-generated sea. The effects of the surface waves on the wind profiles in the marine ABL are illustrated, and solutions proposed are compared with those of the model where the wave-induced stress is neglected. The solutions are also compared with observations from a tower on Östergarnsholm Island in the Baltic Sea. Illustrative examples and the comparisons between observations and the theoretical predictions demonstrate that the surface waves have a considerable impact, not only on the near-surface mean wind profile, but also on the turbulence structure of the marine ABL, as they change qualitatively the structure of the ABL.

Abstract:A computationally efficient semi-analytical solution for ground-borne vibrations from underground railways is proposed and used to investigate the influence of hydraulic boundary conditions at the scattering surfaces and the moving ground water table on ground vibrations. The arrangement of a dry soil layer with varying thickness resting on a saturated poroelastic half-space, which includes a circular tunnel subject to a harmonic load at the tunnel invert, creates the scenario of a moving water table for research purposes in this paper. The tunnel is modelled as a hollow cylinder, which is made of visco-elastic material and buried in the half-space below the ground water table. The wave field in the dry soil layer consists of up-going and down-going waves while the wave field in the tunnel wall consists of outgoing and regular cylindrical waves. The complete solution for the saturated half-space with a cylindrical hole is composed of down-going plane waves and outgoing cylindrical waves. By adopting traction-free boundary conditions on the ground surface and continuity conditions at the interfaces of the two soil layers and of the tunnel and the surrounding soil, a set of algebraic equations can be obtained and solved in the transformed domain. Numerical results show that the moving ground water table can cause an uncertainty of up to 20 dB for surface vibrations. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
A Westervelt equation for acoustic wave propagation through weakly stratified, arbitrary Mach number atmospheres

Abstract:Nonlinear distortion of infrasonic waves through atmospheres up to thermospheric altitudes govern large-range ground-level observations of explosive noise sources, causing large differences between the near and far field. Propagation modelling in this scenario to include realistic nonlinear effects has thus far been limited to high-fidelity, numerically intensive Direct Numerical Simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, or nonlinear parabolic equations with restrictions on the mean flow Mach number. For the accurate modelling of nonlinear waveform synthesis through realistic atmospheric winds up to thermospheric altitudes, this work presents nonlinear wave equation analysis which results in in a Westervelt equation for weakly stratified, arbitrary Mach number atmospheres. This is intended to be used as a benchmark for model development and numerical analyses such that alternative low-fidelity numerical calculations to Direct Numerical Simulations can be sought.

Abstract:In recent years, the analysis of the dependence of reflection coefficients on the magnitude of the angle of incidence of reflected waves has been successfully used in the practice of seismic research. AVO analysis is one of the methods of dynamic analysis that is used to estimate changes in the amplitude of reflected waves depending on the distance between the explosion points and the receivers. The AVO method is based on the analysis of the dependence of the reflection coefficients on the angle of incidence. In real conditions, this dependence can be determined, for example, by the roughness of the boundaries. This determines the relevance of studying the features of reflection coefficients on uneven boundaries on objects with well-controlled properties. The aim of the work is to determine the nature of the influence of different-scale roughness of seismic boundaries on the reflection coefficients of elastic waves. The work also used the technique of isolating standing waves to determine the wave velocity. As a result, graphs were obtained demonstrating the dependence of the reflection coefficients on the magnitude of the angle of incidence of reflected waves from a rough surface. Reflection coefficients were also obtained for the boundary of an isotropic medium in the direction of the isotropy plane and possible ways of applying the results were analyzed. Based on the data obtained, we can say that when the azimuth changes relative to the direction of the surface, the reflection coefficients change significantly only at the supercritical angles of incidence.

Abstract:Rigid-body impact sound synthesis methods often omit the ground sound. In this paper we analyze an idealized ground-sound model based on an elastodynamic halfspace, and use it to identify scenarios wherein ground sound is perceptually relevant versus when it is masked by the impacting object's modal sound or transient acceleration noise. Our analytical model gives a smooth, closed-form expression for ground surface acceleration, which we can then use in the Rayleigh integral or in an "acoustic shader" for a finite-difference time-domain wave simulation. We find that when modal sound is inaudible, ground sound is audible in scenarios where a dense object impacts a soft ground and scenarios where the impact point has a low elevation angle to the listening point.

Atmospheric sound propagation in a stratified moving media: Application of the semi analytic finite element method

Abstract:This article presents a finite element based solution of the exact governing wave equation for a stratified inhomogeneous moving media. The model is applied to a two dimensional range independent problem in outdoor sound propagation in which the ground is treated as perfectly reflecting. The sound pressure field is expanded as a sum over eigenmodes propagating in the range direction, and the semi analytic finite element method is used to solve the governing eigenequation. This delivers faster solution times when compared to traditional finite element based methods while simultaneously accommodating continuous variations in fluid properties in the vertical direction. In principle, the method converges toward the exact solution and so delivers a benchmark method for range independent problems. The method is shown to provide excellent agreement with analytic solutions, and good convergence is demonstrated for more complex problems, including temperature inversions and logarithmic profiles for wind velocity. Finally, qualitative comparisons are made against infrasound predictions, including those obtained using wide angle parabolic equations. The method is shown to provide a focussed image of the sound pressure field over large distances, as well as to reproduce multiple turning points and ground interactions.
Finite-frequency modeling of regional tropospheric infrasound using realistic atmospheres and terrain

Abstract:Infrasonic waves have been observed to propagate to regional (greater than 15 km) distances through the troposphere. Infrasound propagation in the geometric acoustics approximation has shown that realistic terrain can scatter acoustic energy from tropospheric ducts; however, ray methods cannot intrinsically capture finite-frequency behavior such as diffraction. A two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been developed to solve linearized equations for infrasound propagation with realistic terrain. Acoustic wave propagation over 100 km with both flat terrain and a Gaussian hill was first simulated in order to compare finite-frequency propagation with ray predictions. The effects of realistic terrain and atmospheres on infrasound signals from a 2012 surface explosion at the Utah Testing and Training Range are then investigated. Propagation through the troposphere is suggested by array processing results, but eigenrays are not predicted due to weak to nonexistent ducting conditions. FDTD modeling suggests that the inclusion of terrain and finite frequency effects helps explain much of the observed signal in a realistic scenario. These results suggest that geometric acoustics may underestimate propagation through the troposphere, and that recorded waveforms at regional distances may be noticeably affected by terrain.

Abstract:In the context of research on the measurement of long-range attenuation of noise from terrestrial sound sources, a parametric study of atmospheric sound propagation channel characteristics as a function of source height, ground characteristics and meteorological conditions is presented. The study relies on ray tracing. The Bellhop ray-tracing model which is well known in underwater acoustics has been used here. In this paper, the accuracy of Bellhop's predictions in the atmosphere is first addressed by comparison with published benchmarks cases by Attenborough et al and results from Salomon's ray model. No significant discrepancy was noticed with respect to these references. The second part of the paper presents a parametric study for source heights ranging from 0.05 m to 200 m, a grid of receivers at ranges between 200m and 2 km from the source and between 2 and 50 m height. A homogeneous flat absorbing ground described by a complex reflection factor is assumed. For the atmospheric conditions, a subset of the WiSi classification was considered. The results are analyzed from the point of view of the receiver and discussed in terms of attenuation, number of arrivals and number of reflections from the ground.

Abstract:The modeling of sound propagation for land-based wind turbines is a complex task that takes various parameters into account. Not only do the wind speed and wind direction affect the noise received at a certain position by changing the refraction of the sound, but also the terrain complexity, ground impedance, and receiver position relative to the source and ground all affect propagation. These effects are seen by the reflections of the sound at the ground surface causing interference of sound waves, or by the receiver being positioned in and out of noise shadow zones in the upwind far field position, or in steep terrain irregularities. Several sound propagation models with different levels of fidelity have been developed through time to account for these effects. This paper will focus on two different parabolic equation models, the Beilis-Tappert Parabolic Equation and the Generalized Terrain Parabolic Equation, through theoretical studies of varying terrain complexity, ground impedance, and sound speed profiles (upwind, downwind, and no wind). In addition, the propagation models are validated through spectral comparisons to noise measurements from two different campaigns considering loudspeaker noise and wind turbine noise, respectively.

Abstract:According to the well-known statement of Charles Mayo, ‘MD is frequently suspected, often looked for and seldom found.This paper presents and describes a case of Meckel’s diverticulum. It was found in 55-year-old male cadaver during routine dissection in department of anatomy GMC Amritsar. It was located 50.5 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction. It was 2.5cm in length with narrow tip and 0.95 cm in diameter. It was attached to antimesentric border. The tip was not attached by any fibrous band to umbilicus.

Abstract:The propagation of infrasound in the atmosphere is influenced by atmospheric environmental parameters, which affect the precise localization of the infrasound source. Therefore, it has become crucial to quantify the influence of atmospheric environmental parameters on infrasound propagation. First, in this paper, the tau-p model is chosen as the physical model of infrasound propagation in a non-uniform moving medium. The atmospheric environmental parameters affecting infrasound propagation are determined. Secondly, the atmospheric environmental parameter distribution data are generated using the Sobol sampling method. Third, the generated atmospheric data are incorporated into the physical model of infrasound propagation to solve the output. Finally, Sobol sensitivity analysis is performed for each parameter, and the atmospheric parameter with the largest Sobol index is identified as the one with the most significant influence on infrasound propagation.

Abstract:Herein, we derive the expression for the atmospheric refractive index structure constant under the influence of planar acoustic wave perturbations under the influence of the acoustic field on the refractive index and energy of the atmosphere. Utilizing the low-frequency compensated power spectrum inversion technique, we simulate the refractive index power spectrum of atmospheric turbulence perturbed by a planar acoustic wave. Numerical analysis is conducted on the transmission characteristics of the vortex light superposition states in atmospheric turbulence perturbed by a plane acoustic wave under different acoustic wave transmission heights, acoustic pressure amplitudes, and frequencies. Results indicate that introducing an acoustic field induces fluctuations in the atmospheric refractive index structure constant, with a more pronounced impact on the refractive index than on energy. Compared with the sole consideration of the impact of the acoustic field on the atmospheric refractive index, incorporating its effect on atmospheric energy results in a decrease in the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. The impact of the acoustic field on atmospheric turbulence is directly proportional to both acoustic pressure amplitude and frequency. The influence of the acoustic field on the transmission properties of the vortex optical superposition state varies with different acoustic transmission distances. Consequently, the transmission characteristics of the vortex light superposition state can be actively modulated according to varying acoustic wave transmission distances. This study offers a theoretical basis for modulating the optical field transmission characteristics via acoustic fields.

Abstract:Based on first- and second-order perturbation theory, we present a numerical study of the temporal build-up and decay of unsteady acoustic fields and acoustic streaming flows actuated by vibrating walls in the transverse cross-sectional plane of a long straight microchannel under adiabatic conditions and assuming temperature-independent material parameters. The unsteady streaming flow is obtained by averaging the time-dependent velocity field over one oscillation period, and as time increases, it is shown to converge towards the well-known steady time-averaged solution calculated in the frequency domain. Scaling analysis reveals that the acoustic resonance builds up much faster than the acoustic streaming, implying that the radiation force may dominate over the drag force from streaming even for small particles. However, our numerical time-dependent analysis indicates that pulsed actuation does not reduce streaming significantly due to its slow decay. Our analysis also shows that for an acoustic resonance with a quality factor Q, the amplitude of the oscillating second-order velocity component is Q times larger than the usual second-order steady time-averaged velocity component. Consequently, the well-known criterion v << c for the validity of the perturbation expansion is replaced by the more restrictive criterion v << c/Q. Our numerical model is available in the supplemental material in the form of Comsol model files and Matlab scripts.

Analytic propagation variances and power spectral densities from a wave-optics perspective.

Abstract:This work presents an approach for constructing equations describing the effects of atmospheric turbulence on propagating light based on equations and concepts that will be familiar to those with a background in paraxial wave-optics modeling. The approach is developed and demonstrated by working through three examples of increasing complexity: the variance and power spectral density of the aperture-averaged phase gradient (G tilt) on a point-source beacon, the variance of the Zernike tilt difference between two physically separated point-source beacons, and the irradiance-weighted average phase gradient (centroid tilt) and target-plane jitter variance for a generic beam. The first two results are shown to be consistent with the existing literature; the third is novel, and it is shown to agree with wave optics and to be consistent with the literature in the special case of a Gaussian beam.
