Abstract:Seventy eight dog‐bone shaped ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) tensile specimens were designed to study the effects of single steel fiber and hybrid steel fiber with polyolefin (PP) fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, glass fiber (GF), polyester (PET) fiber, and basalt fiber (BF) on the compressive strength, tensile strength, peak strain, and fracture energy of UHPC. The results showed that hybrid fiber reinforced UHPC had good toughness damage characteristics, which reflected the strengthening and toughening effects of different fibers. The tensile stress–strain curves of hybrid fiber reinforced UHPC could be divided into the rising section and softening section, and the softening section was significantly influenced by the type and volume content of fibers. Among the microfiber (PVA fiber, GF, and BF), GF had the most significant strengthening effect, PVA fiber had the best ability to improve the deformation of UHPC, and BF had the most significant effect on the improvement of fracture energy. Among macrofiber (PP fiber, PET fiber), PP fiber had a better ability to improve UHPC deformation than PET fiber, but both were lower than microfiber. When the total volume content of steel fiber and PVA fiber was 2.5%, the best toughening and crack resistance effect was achieved when the volume content of steel fiber was 1.5% and the volume content of PVA fiber was 1.0%. Combined with the experimental results, the UHPC tensile σ–ω curves of single steel fibers, hybrid steel–PVA fibers, and hybrid steel–PVA–PET fibers were established, and the predicted curves were in good agreement with the experimental curves.

J Strength Cond Res 28(11): 3063–3072, 2014—The aim of this study was to compare mechanical output from kettlebell snatch and 2-handed kettlebell swing exercise. Twenty-two men performed 3 sets of 8 kettlebell snatch and 2-handed swing exercise with a 24-kg kettlebell on a force platform. Vertical and horizontal net impulse, mean force, displacement, the magnitude, and rate of work performed displacing the kettlebell-and-lifter center of mass (CM), phase durations and impulse ratio (horizontal to resultant) were calculated from force data. The results of repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that: (a) vertical CM displacement was significantly larger during kettlebell snatch exercise (22 ± 4 vs. 18 ± 5 cm, p = 0.001), and vertical CM displacement was significantly larger than horizontal CM displacement, regardless of exercise (20 ± 3 vs. 7 ± 1 cm, p < 0.0001); (b) the magnitude (253 ± 73 vs. 3 ± 1 J, p < 0.0001) and rate of work (714 ± 288 vs. 11 ± 4 W, p < 0.0001) performed to vertically displace the CM was larger than the horizontal equivalent in both exercises, and the magnitude (5 ± 2 vs. 1 ± 1 J, p < 0.0001) and rate of work (18 ± 7 vs. 4 ± 3 W, p < 0.0001) performed to horizontally displace the CM during 2-handed swing exercise was significantly larger than the kettlebell snatch equivalent; (c) this was underpinned by the magnitude of horizontal impulse (29 ± 7 vs. 18 ± 7 N·s, p < 0.0001) and the impulse ratio (23 vs. 14%, p < 0.0001). These findings reveal that, apart from the greater emphasis, 2-handed swing exercise places on horizontal mechanical output, the mechanical output of the 2 exercises is similar. Research shows that 2-handed swing exercise improves maximum and explosive strength. These results suggest that strength and conditioning coaches should consider using kettlebell snatch and 2-handed swing exercise interchangeably for the ballistic component of athlete strength and conditioning programs.
Tensile Behavior of Hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Ultra-High-Performance Concrete

Abstract:Thirty dog bone-shaped specimens were tested to study the effects of steel fiber mixed with seven kinds of non-metallic fibers on the tensile properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Through experiments and micromorphological analysis, the effects of hybrid fibers on the compressive strength, tensile strength, peak strain, fracture energy, and characteristic length of UHPC were analyzed. The results showed that the hybrid fiber-reinforced UHPC showed good ductile failure characteristics, which reflected the good crack resistance and toughening effect of different fibers. The tensile stress–strain curves of UHPC with different hybrid fibers can be divided into two parts: ascending section and softening section, and the softening section was greatly affected by the type and content of fibers. Basalt fiber with a diameter of 0.02 mm had the most obvious strengthening effect on UHPC, and polyvinyl alcohol fiber with a diameter of 0.2 mm and length of 8 mm had the best toughening effect. The mixing of steel fiber and non-metallic fiber cannot only reduce the preparation cost but also improve the fracture energy and toughness of UHPC.

Abstract:Ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) offers superior tensile properties in comparison to normal and high‐strength concrete. This is known to largely depend on the fibers included in the UHPC mixtures. Among the available types of fiber, steel fibers have been commonly used in the current practice. However, given the price and availability issues associated with steel fibers, there has been growing interest in benefiting from synthetic fibers in UHPC. This was the motivation for the current study to investigate the potential of five synthetic fibers by evaluating how the tensile properties of the UHPC mixtures made with a hybrid of steel and synthetic fibers are influenced under direct tension. The synthetic fibers of choice consisted of nylon, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol, alkali‐resistant glass, and carbon fibers. By using a dog bone test setup, the main tensile properties of the developed mixtures (i.e., direct tensile strength, elastic modulus, and stress–strain relationship) were systematically determined. The results extracted from direct tension tests were then further processed in conjunction with digital image correlation analyses to investigate the formation and propagation of cracks, as well as the post‐cracking response. The original findings reported from this study are expected to pave the way to broaden the fiber types that can be considered for the structural applications of UHPC, especially where high tensile stresses/strains are anticipated.

Abstract:Three combinations of single fibers and nine combinations of hybrid fibers were tested to analyze the mechanical properties and crack propagation behavior of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) by digital image correlation. It was found that in comparison to single fibers, the long fibers had a more pronounced effect than short fibers. The hybrid combination of medium length fiber (Vf = 0.5%) and long fiber (Vf = 1.5%) generated a better flexural behavior in terms of post-crack strength, deflection, toughness, than the other hybridization series. A digital image correlation (DIC) technique was applied to record the evolution of surface deformation. The hybrid use of longer fiber replaced the shorter fiber, long fiber replaced medium length fiber and short fiber, medium length fiber replaced short at lower replacement ratios (0.5% and 1.0%), the crack shapes were presented linear variation and showed an abrupt change and did not have a constant increment at higher replacement ratios (1.5% and 2.0%).

Abstract:Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is increasingly used for various engineering applications, owing to its superior strength properties. Such properties, however, can be accompanied by workability issues, especially if the dosage of steel fibers is significantly increased. As a potential solution, this study explored the use of a combination of steel microfibers and macrofibers through a holistic experimental testing program. This was to understand the effects of steel fiber combinations on the workability and flexural strength of various UHPC mixtures. The microfibers were investigated for five different dosages from 1.0% to 3.0% (with an increment of 0.5%). In parallel, two mixtures were prepared with a 2.0% dosage of macrofibers in the form of twisted wire and hooked fibers. At the next stage, six additional mixtures were prepared with a combination of microfibers and macrofibers of various dosages. Further to the measurements extracted from the workability and flexural strength tests, digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were employed to obtain firsthand information about the widths and depths of cracks observed in the flexural specimens tested under an increasing load. The outcome of this study showed how a combination of microfibers and macrofibers can contribute to improving the flexural response characteristics of UHPC, especially without having to increase the dosage of steel fibers to the ranges that can adversely affect the mixture's workability.

Abstract:<p>The research aims to enhance the ductility characteristics of ultra-high performance concrete fibre material (UHPC-FM) comprising with different micro-synthetic fibres such as basalt fibre (BF) polypropylene fibre (PPF) and glass fibre (GF). As a sequence, consecutive dosages of these fibres such as 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5% of volumetric fractions were introduced into the mixes for preparing the UHPC-FM to achieve the goals. The observed results showed that both the type and amount of added fibres influenced on the properties of fresh and hardened UHPC-FM concretes. In addition, higher contents of fibre filament (FFs) resulted a decreasing trend in flow of fresh UHPC-FM mixtures, where pastes with PPF demonstrated the highest fluidity property. Moreover, compressive strength (CS) increased upon addition of 0.5% FFs and linearly decreased for introducing the higher amounts. Compared with the control specimen (UHPC-A0), the flexural strength of samples containing 2.5% BF, PPF and GF increased by 20.8%, 26.9%, and 27.9%, respectively. Modulus of rupture increased by 20.04% in case of BF, 24.92% for PPF and 26.05% for GF when compared with reference sample (8429.5-kN). Toughness indexes of BF, PPF and GF based UHPC-FM samples were around 4.64, 4.75 and 4.86 times higher respectively, in comparison to the control specimens. The microstructure observation and drying shrinkage test illustrate fiber can modify UHPC well, which corroborated the results of mechanical properties exactly. In addition, the results of the current test can be applied for ultra-high-performance (UHPC) panels and vibration-free UHPC material.</p>

Abstract:Due to the sharp and corrosion-prone features of steel fibers, there is a demand for ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) reinforced with nonmetallic fibers. In this paper, glass fiber (GF) and the high-performance polypropylene (HPP) fiber were selected to prepare UHPC, and the effects of different fibers on the compressive, tensile and bending properties of UHPC were investigated, experimentally and numerically. Then, the damage evolution of UHPC was further studied numerically, adopting the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model. The difference between the simulation values and experimental values was within 5.0%, verifying the reliability of the numerical model. The results indicate that 2.0% fiber content in UHPC provides better mechanical properties. In addition, the glass fiber was more significant in strengthening the effect. Compared with HPP-UHPC, the compressive, tensile and flexural strength of GF-UHPC increased by about 20%, 30% and 40%, respectively. However, the flexural toughness indexes I5, I10 and I20 of HPP-UHPC were about 1.2, 2.0 and 3.8 times those of GF-UHPC, respectively, showing that the toughening effect of the HPP fiber is better.

Abstract:The influence of the volume fraction of steel fibers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and their hybrid fibers on the mechanical and fracture mechanical properties of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) was studied in this paper. To analyze the synergistic effect of steel fibers and PVA fibers on the deformation properties of UHPC, the gain ratio of mechanical parameters of hybrid fibers reinforced UHPC to steel fibers reinforced UHPC, obtained by two ways, equal total fibers volume fraction and equal steel fibers volume fraction. The results show that steel fibers and PVA fibers reduce the compressive strength of UHPC to some extent, and with the increasing of fibers volume fraction, the flexural-compressive ratio and tension-compression ratio increase gradually. The fracture mechanical properties of fibers reinforced UHPC were significantly is improved by the participation of steel fibers and PVA fibers, and the latter are superior to former in improving the deformation properties of UHPC. Except compressive strength, the mechanical parameters gain ratio of hybrid fibers UHPC to steel fibers UHPC calculated with equal steel fibers volume fraction is higher than the corresponding results of the equal total fibers volume fraction, which indicates that 0.25 v% PVA fibers as the modified component is mixed with steel fibers reinforced UHPC, can further improve its bending tensile and fracture mechanical properties.

Abstract:Fracture energy, non-destructive testing, some physical and mechanical tests and microstructural investigations were performed on 18-month 0.7 V%, 1.3 V% and 2.0 V% PVA fiber, glass fiber (GF) and steel fiber (SF) reinforced Ultra High Performance Concretes (UHPCs). Fracture test was performed on Single Edge Notched Beams (SENB) to investigate fracture energy, dissipated energy, flexural strength, crack resistance index (CRI), and flexibility index (FI) of UHPCs. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and damping ratios of the UHPCs were calculated by performing resonance frequency tests on the SENB samples by ASTM C215 standard. In addition, compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, electrical resistivity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Leeb hardness, Schmidt hammer, and density tests were also performed on the cylindrical samples. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analyzes were performed to examine the interaction between the UHPC matrix and different fibers. Among all the mixtures, an exceptionally positive effect of SFs on the all mechanical properties of the UHPCs was observed. Dynamic test results showed that the increase in fiber ratio increased the damping ratio of UHPCs irrespective of fiber type. The UPV and electrical resistivity results offered promising results regarding the internal structure of UHPCs.

Developing Multifunctional Ultra-High Performance Concrete via Incorporating Hybrid Steel Wires and Fibers

Abstract:. Stainless steel wires (SSWs) with micro diameter and stainless steel fiber (SFs) with millimeter diameter were incorporated together to develop multifunctional ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in this study. The addition of 0.2 vol.% of SSWs can already improve interface between matrix and SFs, reduce the microcracks in UHPC caused by shrinkage and initial load, increase SFs’ distribution and orientation with their high flexibility, thus enhancing the flexural toughness and resulting in the occurrence of multiple cracking flexural failure mode of UHPC with less than 2.0 vol.% SFs. The hybrid SWs and SFs reinforced UHPC possesses low electrical resistivity and can sense its initial cracking, residual flexural loading and cracking development by the measured fractional change in electrical resistivity. This is mainly coming from the inhibition effect of SWs on microcracks and the extensively conductive pathway formed by both SWs and SFs. The multiple cracking failure mode under flexural load and the self-sensing capacity to monitor crack initiation and propagation of UHPC with low content hybrid wires and fibers is important to develop multifunctional UHPC, thus providing a new approach for maintaining sustainable development of infrastructures.

Abstract:Dry ultra-high performance concrete (DUHPC) is a promising building material with better mechanical and durability properties, developed on the basis of retaining the advantages of traditional dry concrete, such as fast hardening speed, high early age strength and rapid demoulding. In the current study, the impacts of multiscale mono and hybrid steel fibre reinforcements on the static mechanical behaviour of DUHPC were further studied based on the benchmark mix ratio and optimal curing regime obtained from the previous study. The experiments carried out included the quasi-static uniaxial compression, four-point bending and split-tensile tests. The mono fibre reinforcement (0.5–2.0 vol. %) comprised of straight steel fibres with the same diameter but different lengths (6, 10 and 13 mm), while the hybrid fibre reinforcement was composed of different combinations of foregoing fibres at a fixed content (1.5 vol. %), which could be further divided into double and ternary hybridization. Test results revealed that compared to control samples without fibre reinforcement, the single addition of any steel fibres improved the static mechanical behaviour of DUHPC, particularly for flexural and split-tensile performance. In the case of fibre hybridization, the replacement of longer fibres with more addition of short (6 mm) ones evidently reduced the flexural toughness and energy absorption capacity of DUHPC upon cracking, whereas the mixtures with hybrid medium (10 mm) and long (13 mm) fibres as well as with hybrid short, medium and long fibres showed better compressive toughness and energy absorption capability. The proposed multivariate regression linear, nonlinear and most of the mixed models could well estimate the compressive, flexural and split-tensile strength values of mono steel fibre-reinforced DUHPC at a given range of fibre length, volume content and curing age. The updated best-fit models containing compressive strength as an additional independent variable performed better in predicting both the flexural and split-tensile properties.

Abstract:Abstract This research focused on improving ultra high-performance concrete (UHPC) toughness through the addition of annealed plain carbon steel fibers and stainless steel fibers that both exhibit increased ductility and strain hardening compared with conventional steel fibers used for concrete reinforcement. Implementing optimized heat treatments and selecting proper alternative alloys can improve the postyield carrying capacity of UHPCs through plastic deformations, phase transformations, and fiber pullout. This research focused on the flexural response and dynamic penetration resistance of a UHPC known as Cor-Tuf with three different steel fiber types: plain carbon steel, stainless steel that can exhibit phase transformation-induced plasticity, and annealed carbon steel with reduced tensile strength but increased ductility and strain hardening. Annealed carbon steel fibers were able to reduce mass loss by 0.8 % for 5-cm-thick dynamic impact panels. By using a phase-transformable stainless steel, the ultimate flexural strength increased from 32.0 to 42.5 MPa (33 % increase) and the postimpact velocity decreased an average of 31.5 m/s for 2.5 and 5-cm-thick dynamic impact panels. Phase transformations (austenitic to martensitic) were quantified in the stainless steel fibers of postyielded UHPC specimens using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Stainless steel fibers sampled from the postyielded tensile face of a flexural beam increased from 75 to 107 emu/g. The results of the study evidence improvements in tensile properties and toughness that can be accomplished by modifying the stress versus strain response of steel fiber reinforcement and including new energy dissipation mechanisms such as phase transformation.
Effect of Steel Fibers on Tensile Properties of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete: A Review

Abstract:Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced cement-based material with excellent mechanical properties and durability. However, with the improvement of UHPC's compressive properties, its insufficient tensile properties have gradually attracted attention. This paper reviews the tensile properties of steel fibers in UHPC. The purpose is to summarize the existing research and to provide guidance for future research. The relevant papers were retrieved through three commonly used experimental methods for UHPC tensile properties (the direct tensile test, flexural test, and splitting test), and classified according to the content, length, type, and combination of the steel fibers. The results show that the direct tensile test can better reflect the true tensile strength of UHPC materials. The tensile properties of UHPC are not only related to the content, shape, length, and hybrids of the steel fibers, but also to the composition of the UHPC matrix, the orientation of the fibers, and the geometric dimensions of the specimen. The improvement of the tensile properties of the steel fiber combinations depends on the effectiveness of the synergy between the fibers. Additionally, digital image correlation (DIC) technology is mainly used for crack propagation in UHPC. The analysis of the post-crack phase of UHPC is facilitated. Theoretical models and empirical formulas for tensile properties can further deepen the understanding of UHPC tensile properties and provide suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) realized distinctly high mechanical, impermeability, and durability characteristics by reducing the size and content of capillary pore, refining the microstructure of cement hydrates, and effectively using fiber reinforcement. The dense and fine microstructure of UHPC favor its potential to effectively disperse and interact with nanomaterials, which could complement the reinforcing action of fibers in UHPC. An optimization experimental program was implemented in order to identify the optimum combination of steel fiber and relatively low-cost carbon nanofiber in UHPC. The optimum volume fractions of steel fiber and carbon nanofiber identified for balanced improvement of flexural strength, ductility, energy sorption capacity, impact, and abrasion resistance of UHPC were 1.1% and 0.04%, respectively. Desired complementary/synergistic actions of nanofibers and steel fibers in UHPC were detected, which were attributed to their reinforcing effects at different scales, and the potential benefits of nanofibers to interfacial bonding and pull-out behavior of fibers in UHPC. Modification techniques which enhanced the hydrophilicity and bonding potential of nanofibers to cement hydrates benefited their reinforcement efficiency in UHPC.

Abstract:High mechanical strength and ductility of fibre reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) are beneficial to its loading capacity under static and dynamic loads. To further improve the material performance, especially the crack restraint capability and flexural capacity, hybrid fibre reinforcement in UHPC is investigated in the present study. This study first investigated the influence of hybrid straight steel fibres on the static mechanical performance of UHPC. Four mixtures with single and hybrid fibre reinforcement were developed. Fibres with three different lengths (6, 10, 15 mm) but identical diameter (0.2 mm) and volume dosage (2.5%) were incorporated. Quasi-static compression and flexural tests were conducted on these mixtures. The findings in this study indicated that while longer fibre provided an improvement of both compressive strength and elastic modulus, UHPC with hybrid fibres demonstrated better flexural performance. With notched three-point bending test results, tensile softening curves and fracture energy of UHPC were obtained and discussed. The flexural strength and fracture energy of mixture with hybrid long and short fibre was 21.84% and 20.13% greater than those with single long fibre reinforcement. Subsequently, the dynamic behaviour of UHPC beams (2000 × 168 × 168 mm) with a single and hybrid fibre reinforcement was investigated against low-velocity impact. The impact scenario was modelled with 641 kg drop hammer falling freely to the mid-span of the UHPC beams. The test results showed all specimens exhibited flexural response with minimal damage. The impact resistance of UHPC beams reinforced with hybrid fibres was found better than that with single long fibre reinforcement. The maximum and residual displacement of the mixture with hybrid long and medium fibre was 16.08% and 23.95% lower than that with long fibre reinforcement.

Abstract:Ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC), which is characterized by dense microstructure and strain hardening behavior, provides exceptional durability and a new level of structural response to modern structures. However, the design of the UHPC matrix often requires the use of high quantities of supplementary cementitious materials, such as silica fume, which can significantly increase the cost and elevate the production expenses associated with silica fume handling. This paper demonstrates that a fiber-reinforced composite with properties similar to conventional UHPC can be realized with very low quantities of silica fume, such as 1% by mass of cementitious materials. The proposed UHPC is based on reference Type I cement or Type V Portland cement with very low C3A (<1%) that also complies with Class H oil well cement specification, silica fume, small quantities of Al2O3 nanofibers, and high-density polyethylene or polyvinyl alcohol macro fibers. Previous research has demonstrated that nanofibers act as a seeding agent to promote the formation of compact and nanoreinforced calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) clusters within the interparticle and nanofiber spaces, providing a nanoreinforcing effect. This approach produces a denser and stronger matrix. This research expands upon this principle by adding synthetic fibers to ultrahigh strength cement-based composites to form a material with properties approaching that of UHPC. It is indicated that the developed material provides improved strain hardening and compressive strength at the level of 160 MPa.

Abstract:Abstract Ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) is characterised by a high compressive strength, high durability, and a dense microstructure. The latter causes UHPC to fail in a brittle and sometimes explosive manner. For this reason, UHPC is reinforced with microfibre reinforcement. On the one hand, these lead to increased tensile and bending loads being able to be absorbed, but above all to ductile post‐fracture behaviour. The fibres used are mostly steel fibres. An essential aspect of the fibre reinforcement is the bond strength between UHPC and metallic fibre. The bond is divided into chemical‐adhesive bond, form bond and friction bond. Depending on the shape, material and surface condition of the fibre, the individual types of bond have different effects on the concrete. To quantify these effects, fibre pull‐out tests are often carried out. These provide information about the bond strength between the fibre and the concrete. However, results of various studies show that the bond strength does not automatically correlate with the actual influence on the resulting tensile and flexural strengths of concrete components.

Abstract:Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced concrete with superior mechanical strength, ductility and durability properties. However, the influence of steel fiber on its constitutive laws and the specimen geometric dimension effect on its strength had not been paid enough attention. To investigate the effect of steel fibers on the properties of UHPC, specimens with different fiber volume contents and fiber types were tested. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of UHPC at different ages from 3 days to 28 days were conducted. Moreover, specimens with various geometric dimensions were also prepared to study the effect of specimen geometric dimensions (dog-bone-shaped, prism and cylinder specimens) on the properties of UHPC. The results indicated that elastic modulus, tensile peak stress and the corresponding strain increased as the fiber volume content and curing age increased. Specimens with hooked-end fibers exhibited better tensile performance than those with straight fibers. Furthermore, different geometric dimensions of specimens significantly influenced the tensile properties of UHPC. Based on the experimental results, conversion factors were suggested for the transformation of strength obtained from specimens with different geometric dimensions to reference specimens. In addition, both compressive and tensile constitutive laws were proposed to generate the stress–strain relationship of UHPC.

Abstract:The influence of steel fiber on the mechanical properties of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were studied through slump, compressive strength, flexural strength test. The experimental results showed that the incorporation of steel fiber had an influence on the working performance of UHPC, and the slump and expansion degree of UHPC were inversely proportional to the volume content and length-diameter ratio of steel fiber. The steel fiber significantly improved the compressive and flexural strength of UHPC. The mechanical property of UHPC was the best when the steel fiber content was 4%, with 28 day compressive strength up to 163.2MPa and flexural strength up to 45.9MPa. UHPC showed a trend of gradual decrease of compressive strength and gradual increase of flexural strength with the increase of aspect ratio of steel fiber on the condition of constant volume content of steel fiber. The addition of special-shaped steel fiber can improve the compressive and flexural strength of UHPC effectively.
