Abstract:Dam construction and impoundment cause discontinuities in the natural biophysical gradients in rivers. These discontinuities may alter distinctive habitats and different microbial community assembly mechanisms upstream and downstream of dams, which reflect the potential impacts of damming on riverine aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the planktonic microbial assemblages of three large dams in the upper Yangtze River by using high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that the alpha diversity indexes increased downstream of the dams. In addition, more eukaryotic ASVs solely occurred downstream of the dams, which indicated that a large proportion of eukaryotes appeared downstream of the dams. The nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis indicated that there was no obvious geographic clustering of the planktonic microbial assemblages among the different locations or among the different dams. However, the dam barriers changed dam-related variables (maximum dam height and water level) and local environmental variables (water temperature, DOC, etc.) that could possibly affect the assembly of the planktonic microbial communities that are closest to the dams. A co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the keystone taxa of the planktonic bacteria and eukaryotes decreased downstream of the dams. In particular, the keystone taxa of the eukaryotes disappeared downstream of the dams. The robustness analysis indicated that the natural connectivity of the microbial networks decreased more rapidly upstream of the dams, and the downstream eukaryotic network was more stable. In conclusion, damming has a greater impact on planktonic eukaryotes than on bacteria in near-dam areas, and planktonic microbial assemblages were more susceptible to the environmental changes. Our study provides a better understanding of the ecological effects of river damming.

Abstract:Planktonic microorganisms play an important role in maintaining the ecological functions in aquatic ecosystems, but how their structure and function interrelate and respond to environmental changes is still not very clear. Damming interrupts the river continuum and alters river nutrient biogeochemical cycling and biological succession. Considering that river damming decreases the irregular hydrological fluctuation, we hypothesized that it can enhance the ecological functional stability (EFS) of planktonic microorganisms. Therefore, the community composition of planktonic bacteria and archaea, functional genes related to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycling, and relevant environmental factors of four cascade reservoirs in the Pearl River, Southern China, were investigated to understand the impact of damming on microbial community structure and function and verify the above hypothesis. Here, the ratio of function to taxa (F:T) based on Euclidean distance matrix analysis was first proposed to characterize the microbial EFS; the smaller the ratio, the more stable the ecological functions. The results showed that the reservoirs created by river damming had seasonal thermal and chemical stratifications with an increasing hydraulic retention time, which significantly changed the microbial structure and function. The river microbial F:T was significantly higher than that of the reservoirs, indicating that river damming enhances the EFS of the planktonic microorganisms. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that water temperature was an important factor influencing the relationship between the microbial structure and function and thus affected their EFS. In addition, reservoir hydraulic load was found a main factor regulating the seasonal difference in microbial EFS among the reservoirs. This study will help to deepen the understanding of the relationship between microbial structure and function and provide a theoretical basis of assessing the ecological function change after the construction of river damming.

Abstract:Cascade dams disrupt the river continuum, altering hydrology, biodiversity and nutrient flux. Describing the diversity of multi-trophic microbiota and assessing microbial contributions to the ecosystem processes are prerequisites for the restoration of these aquatic systems. This study investigated the microbial food web structure along a cascade-dammed river, paying special attention to the multi-trophic relationships and the potential role of pelagic-benthic coupling in nutrient cycles. Our results revealed the discontinuity in bacterial and eukaryotic community composition, functional group proportion, as well as α-diversity due to fragmentation by damming. The high microbial dissimilarity along the river, with the total multi-trophic β-diversity was 0.84, was almost completely caused by species replacement. Synchronization among trophic levels suggests potential interactions of the pelagic and the benthic groups, of which the β-diversities were primarily influenced by geographic and environmental factors, respectively. Dam-induced environmental variations, especially hydrological and nutrient variables, potentially influence the microbial food web via both top-down and bottom-up forces. We proposed that the cycles of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus are influenced by multi-trophic groups through autotrophic and heterotrophic processes, predator-prey relationships, as well as the release of nutrients mainly by microfauna. Our results advance the notion that pelagic-benthic trophic coupling may intensify the accumulation of organic carbon, ammonium and inorganic phosphorus, thereby changing the biogeochemical patterns along river systems. As a consequence, researchers should pay more attention to the multi-trophic studies when assessing the environmental impacts, and to provide the necessary guidance for the ecological conservation and restoration of the dam-regulated systems.

Abstract:Low-head dams are one of the most common hydraulic facilities, yet they often fragment rivers, leading to profound changes in aquatic biodiversity and river eutrophication levels. Systematic assessments of river ecosystem structure and functions, and their contribution to eutrophication, are however lacking, especially for urban rivers where low-head dams prevail. In this study, we address this gap with a field survey on microbial community structure and ecosystem function, in combination with hydrological, environmental and ecological factors. Our findings revealed that microbial communities showed significant differences among the cascade impoundments, which may be due to the environment heterogeneity resulting from the cascade low-head dams. The alternating lentic-lotic flow environment created by the low-head dams caused nutrient accumulation in the cascade impoundments, enhancing environmental sorting and interspecific competition relationships, and thus possibly contributing to the reduction in sediment denitrification function. Decreased denitrification led to excessive accumulation of nutrients, which may have aggravated river eutrophication. In addition, structural equation model analysis showed that flow velocity may be the key controlling factor for river eutrophication. Therefore, in the construction of river flood control and water storage systems, the location, type and water storage capacity of low-head dams should be fully considered to optimize the hydrodynamic conditions of rivers. To summarize, our findings revealed the cumulative effects of cascade low-head dams in an urban river, and provided new insights into the trade-off between construction and decommissioning of low-head dams in urban river systems.

Abstract:Abstract Dam construction and reservoir formation alters hydro-morphology of rivers, thereby restructuring microbial communities and biogenic element cycles in river ecosystems. The ecological responses and mechanisms of planktonic communities showed notable changes upstream and downstream of dams. Yet, less is reported about how the ecological mechanisms structuring planktonic communities at the closest area upstream and downstream of dams. In this study, we hypothesized that planktonic communities remained the connectivity or similarities but show distinctive ecological responses to changing environment at the closes area upstream and downstream of dams. Three large dams in the upper Yangtze River were chosen in the study. Field data revealed that the alpha diversity indexes slightly increased downstream of the dams. In addition, more eukaryotic ASVs solely occurred downstream of the dams, indicating that a large proportion of eukaryotes was formed downstream of the dams. Co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the keystone species of planktonic bacteria and eukaryotes decreased downstream of the dams, and the modularity increased. The robustness of the co-occurrence relationships among the eukaryotic communities was more strongly influenced by these dams than that among the planktonic bacteria. The variance partitioning analysis results indicated that dam-related variables and local environmental variables mainly shape the assembly of the planktonic microbial communities closest to the dams. In conclusion, dams exert a greater impact on planktonic eukaryotes than on bacteria in near-dam areas, and planktonic bacteria can better adapt to changing environments. Our study provides a better understanding of the ecological effects of river damming.
Damming affects riverine macroinvertebrate metacommunity dynamics: Insights from taxonomic and functional beta diversity

Abstract:Understanding ecological processes that drive metacommunity dynamics is essential for elucidating the mechanisms of community assembly and for guiding biodiversity conservation. This is especially important in dammed rivers. Here, we examined the taxonomic and functional beta diversity of macroinvertebrates and their underlying drivers in a dammed tropical river and compared the patterns with those in an adjacent undammed river. We found that both taxonomic and functional beta diversities were higher in the dammed river than in the undammed river across wet and dry seasons. The replacement component contributed most to the overall beta diversity for both taxonomic and functional facets, and this component was higher in the dammed river than in the undammed river. In addition, the taxonomic richness difference component was significantly higher in the dammed river in the dry season, but the functional richness difference component showed no difference between the two rivers and between the two seasons. Environmental filtering was the primary driver of total beta diversity and its replacement component, whereas the richness difference component was mainly explained by spatial factors, but these drivers varied in the dammed river in different seasons. Overall, our results indicated that damming induced changes in physiochemical variables (e.g., temperature, conductivity, and nutrients), accompanied by alterations in flow regime and longitudinal connectivity, increased replacement and loss of taxa or traits. These changes have consequently led to alteration of macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional community dissimilarity and affected the relative effects of environmental and spatial factors on beta diversity and its components. Our study helps understand the ecological processes associated with dam impacts on macroinvertebrate biodiversity and the conservation potential of undammed rivers. In addition, our results showed that taxonomic and functional beta diversities can provide complementary information about dam impacts on riverine biodiversity.

Abstract:While dam construction supports social and economic development, changes in hydraulic conditions can also affect natural aquatic ecosystems, especially microbial ecosystems. The compositional and functional traits of multi-trophic microbiota can be altered by dam construction, which may result in changes in aquatic predator-prey interactions. To understand this process, we performed a large-scale sampling campaign in the urban reaches of the dam-impacted Yangtze River (1 995 km) and obtained 211 metagenomic datasets and water quality data. We first compared the compositional traits of planktonic microbial communities upstream, downstream, and in a dam reservoir. Results showed that Bacteroidetes (R-strategy) bacteria were more likely to survive upstream, whilst the reservoir and downstream regions were more conducive to the survival of K-strategy bacteria such as Actinobacteria. Eukaryotic predators tended to be enriched upstream, whilst phototrophs tended to be enriched in the reservoir and downstream regions. Based on bipartite networks, we inferred that the potential microbial predator-prey interactions gradually and significantly decreased from upstream to the downstream and dam regions, affecting 56% of keystone microbial species. Remarkably, functional analysis showed that the abundance of the photosynthetic gene psbO was higher in the reservoir and downstream regions, whilst the abundance of the KEGG carbohydrate metabolic pathway was higher upstream. These results indicate that dam construction in the Yangtze River induced planktonic microbial ecosystem transformation from detritus-based food webs to autotroph-based food webs.
Damming river shapes distinct patterns and processes of planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities

Abstract:Planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities play important roles in biogeochemical cycles, but their biogeographic patterns and community assembly processes in large damming rivers still remain unclear. In this study, 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA coding genes were used for sample sequencing analysis of planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in the upper Yangtze River. The upper Yangtze River was divided into dam-affected zones and river zones based on the influence of dams. The results showed that there were significant differences in the bacterial and microeukaryotic communities between the two zones and that dams significantly reduced the α-diversity of the bacterial communities. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that networks in the river zone were denser than those in the dam-affected zone. The relationships among species in bacterial networks were more complex than those in microeukaryotic networks. Dispersal limitation and ecological drift were the main processes influencing planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in the dam-affected zone respectively, whereas the role of deterministic processes increased in the river zone. Anthropogenic activities and hydraulic conditions affected suspended sediment and controlled microbial diversity in the river zone. These results suggest that dams impact planktonic bacteria more strongly than planktonic microeukaryotes, indicating that the distribution patterns and processes of the bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in large rivers are significantly different.

Abstract:Understanding the interactions among flow-sediment, microorganisms, and biogeochemical cycles is crucial for comprehending the ecological response mechanisms of dams and water diversion. This study focused on the spatial patterns of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur (CNPS) cycle functional genes in the water resource for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China, specifically the Danjiangkou Reservoir (comprising the Han and Dan reservoirs). The investigation incorporated sediment physicochemical properties and microplastic pollution. Numerous microbial species were identified, revealing that microbial communities demonstrated sensitivity to changes in sedimentary mud content. The communities exhibited greater β diversity due to finer sediment particles in the Han Reservoir (HR), whereas in the Dan Reservoir (DR), despite having higher sediment nutrient content and MPs pollution, did not display this pattern. Regarding the composition and structure of microbial communities, the study highlighted that sediment N and P content had a more significant influence compared to particle size and MPs. The quantitative microbial element cycling (QMEC) results confirmed the presence of extensive chemolithotrophic microbes and strong nitrogen cycle activity stemming from long-term water storage and diversion operations. The denitrification intensity in the HR surpassed that of the DR. Notably, near the pre-dam area, biological nitrogen fixation, phosphorus removal, and sulfur reduction exhibited noticeable increases. Dam construction refined sediment, fostering the growth of different biogeochemical cycling bacteria and increasing the abundance of CNPS cycling genes. Furthermore, the presence of MPs exhibited a positive correlation with S cycling genes and a negative correlation with C and N cycling genes. These findings suggest that variations in flow-sediment dynamics and MPs pollution have significant impact the biogeochemical cycle of the reservoir.

Abstract:River and reservoir bacterial communities are the most basic part of river biomes and ecosystem structure, and play an important role in river biological processes. Yet, it remains unclear how highly regulated dam reservoirs affect both soil and sediment bacterial communities. A temporal distribution pattern of bacterial communities was investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing in a transition section of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). In total, 106,682 features belong to the bacteria kingdom, encompassing 95 phyla, 228 classes, 514 orders, 871 families, 1959 genera, and 3,053 species. With water level regulation, Shannon diversity index, and observed species differed significantly, with no significant difference in Simpson evenness. Both in the high water level period (October) and the low water level period (June), Proteobacteria, Acidobacteri, and Chloroflexi were the most abundant phyla. Whereas, based on PCA plots and Circos plot, the microbial community structure has changed significantly. LEfSe method was used to identify the classified bacterial taxa with significant abundance differences between the low water level and high water level periods. KOs (KEGG Orthology) pathway enrichment analysis were conducted to investigate functional and related metabolic pathways in groups. To some extent, it can be inferred that water level regulation affects community growth by affecting the metabolism of the microbial community.

Abstract:A series of in vitro experiments demonstrated a clear effect of additive hyaluronic acid (HA) on animal joints with experimentally reduced lubricating ability. Eleven canine hip joints were utilized and the experimental conditions tested were: i) intact joints, ii) after washing the joint surfaces, and iii) after adding 1% HA to them. The frictional coefficient of every joint increased after washing and subsequently decreased after adding HA. The mean values were 0.007 (SD 0.004) on the intact joints, 0.020 (SD 0.009) after washing, and 0.013 (SD 0.005) after the addition of HA. The differences between the three values of frictional coefficients were shown to be statistically significant (p < 0.01).
Cascade damming impacts on microbial mediated nitrogen cycling in rivers

Abstract:Rivers display essential role in nitrogen (N) cycling in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, but now they are suffering from damming worldwide, especially from cascade damming. Despite of the importance of microorganisms in biogeochemical nutrient cycling, little attention has been paid to microbial functional biogeography under damming disturbances. Here, the Geochip microarray was applied to investigate the microbial mediated N cycling across the single-dammed Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River and the cascade-dammed Lancang-Mekong River in southwest China. Our results showed that the N cycling processes (nitrogen fixation, ammonification, denitrification, nitrification and anammox) were stimulated in reservoirs in both rivers and the enhancement was inversely coupled with hydraulic retention time, but the recovery of N-cycling gene abundance in downstream of dam was intervened by cascade damming. Moreover, N-cycling gene composition was significantly altered in the single-dammed river, while no remarkable change was found in the cascade-dammed reaches. However, different from the unvaried gene composition, cascade damming intervened the recovery of N-cycling gene flow connectivity and resulted in the continuous decrease of connectivity in cascade damming reaches. In addition, in the single-dammed river, nutrients were the important drivers for variation in gene abundance, while they did not influence gene composition. Meanwhile, the abundance and composition of N-cycling genes in the cascade-dammed river were both significantly correlated to geographical parameters and water physical characteristics. Therefore, our study has vital implications for anticipating microbial functional response and biogeochemical feedback to ongoing cascade damming, contributing to the protection of river ecosystems under river regulation.

Abstract:Dams represent the most significant anthropogenic disturbance to global rivers. Previous studies have shown that free-living and particle-attached microbes exhibited differentially in river and reservoir ecosystems. However, little is known about the dam’s effect on their co-occurrence patterns. Here, a random matrix theory (RMT)-based network approach was used to construct microbial ecological networks for free-living and particle-attached communities in the immediate vicinity of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), based on a high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. Microbial distribution pattern showed that differences caused by lifestyle (free-living vs. particle-attached) were greater than those caused by geographic position (upstream vs. downstream of the TGD). Network analysis revealed higher connectivity and a lower number of modules in the overall downstream networks. Furthermore, considering the lifestyle, the network structures and properties for free-living and particle-attached microbes were different between upstream and downstream of the dam. Specifically, free-living communities located upstream of the dam exhibited a more complex co-occurrence pattern than the particle-attached communities, whereas the opposite was true for those located downstream of the dam. This variation indicated a strong impact of the dam on microbial interactions for microbes with similar lifestyle in the vicinity of the dam. We identified 112 persistent operational taxonomic unit (OTU)-level species that stably coexisted regardless of lifestyle and geographic positions. These persistent species occupied 21.33–25.57% of the total nodes in each network, and together with their first neighbors, they contributed more than 50% of the nodes and edges belonging to each network. Furthermore, we found that taxonomic affiliations for central nodes (with high degree) varied in these persistent species sub-networks. Collectively, our findings expand the current understanding of the dam’s effect on species interaction variation patterns for free-living and particle-attached communities in the vicinity of the dam, which are more complex than traditional alpha and beta microbial diversity.

Abstract:The Three Gorges Dam has significantly altered ecological and environmental conditions within the reservoir region, but how these changes affect bacterioplankton structure and function is unknown. Here, three widely accepted metagenomic tools were employed to study the impact of damming on the bacterioplankton community in the Xiangxi River. Our results indicated that bacterioplankton communities were both taxonomically and functionally different between backwater and riverine sites, which represent communities with and without direct dam effects, respectively. There were many more nitrogen cycling Betaproteobacteria (e.g., Limnohabitans ) and a higher abundance of functional genes and KEGG orthology (KO) groups involved in nitrogen cycling in the riverine sites, suggesting a higher level of bacterial activity involved in generating more nitrogenous nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton. Additionally, the KO categories involved in carbon and sulfur metabolism, as well as most of the detected functional genes also showed clear backwater and riverine patterns. As expected, these diversity patterns all significantly correlated with environmental characteristics, confirming that the bacterioplankton communities in the Xiangxi River were really affected by environmental changes from the Three Gorges Dam. This study provides a first comparative metagenomic insight for evaluating the impacts of the large dam on microbial function.

Our findings revealed that cascade dams create distinct environments, shaping bacterioplankton communities near the dams differently from those in natural rivers. In the upstream of the cascade dams, water quality was superior, while bacterioplankton community structure was simple with weak community interactions. In the midstream, nutrient and heavy metal content were increased, making bacterioplankton structures more susceptible to environmental changes. In the downstream of the cascade dams, water quality had a significant impact on the community and the bacterioplankton structures were highly complex. Additionally, environmental variables significantly influenced bacterioplankton functional groups. However, the response to these factors, as well as the interplay between functional and taxonomic diversity, varied markedly depending on the specific region of the cascade dams. We here delved into the effects of cascade dams on the taxonomic diversity and functional groups of bacterioplankton to provide a theoretical basis for segmentally regulating these dams.

Abstract:Dam construction as an important anthropogenic activity significantly influences ecological processes in altered freshwater bodies. However, the effects of multiple cascade dams on microbial communities have been largely overlooked. In this study, the spatiotemporal distribution, co-occurrence relationships, assembly mechanisms, and functional profiles of sedimentary bacterial communities were systematically investigated in 12 cascade reservoirs across two typical karst basins in southwest China over four seasons. A significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity was observed in bacterial abundance and diversity. Co-occurrence patterns in the Wujiang Basin exhibited greater edge counts, graph density, average degree, robustness, and reduced modularity, suggesting more intimate and stronger ecological interactions among species than in the Pearl River Basin. Furthermore, Armatimonadota and Desulfobacterota, identified as keystone species, occupied a more prominent niche than the dominant species. A notable distance-decay relationship between geographical distance and community dissimilarities was identified in the Pearl River Basin. Importantly, in the Wujiang Basin, water temperature emerged as the primary seasonal variable steering the deterministic process of bacterial communities, whereas 58.5% of the explained community variance in the neutral community model (NCM) indicated that stochastic processes governed community assembly in the Pearl River Basin. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed more pronounced seasonal dynamics in nitrogen functional compositions than spatial variation in the Wujiang Basin. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results indicated that in the Wujiang Basin, environmental factors and in Pearl River Basin, geographical distance, reservoir age, and hydraulic retention time (HRT), respectively, influenced the abundance of nitrogen-related genes. Notably, these findings offer novel insights: building multiple cascade reservoirs could lead to a cascading decrease in biodiversity and resilience in the river–reservoir ecosystem.

Abstract:Abstract Dams have fragmented rivers and threatened aquatic biodiversity globally. However, the findings regarding dam impacts on riverine macroinvertebrates vary across regions and taxa. We conducted a global meta-analysis to quantify the effects of dams on macroinvertebrate assemblages (i.e. species richness and abundance) based on 3849 data points extracted from 54 publications. Responses of macroinvertebrates to dams varied among climatic zones, dam altitudes, dam sizes (i.e. height), downstream distances from the dams, and taxonomic groups. The overall effect size of dams on macroinvertebrate richness was negative, while that of dams on abundance was positive but varied among different dam types. Richness reductions were most pronounced in cold regions and high-altitude regions and were least pronounced in tropical regions and low-altitude regions, while abundance increases were more obvious in tropical regions and low-altitude regions. Macroinvertebrate richness reduction and abundance increase were coupled (i.e. when the richness slightly decreased, the increase in abundance was more significant, and vice versa) under the influence of dams across different climatic zones, altitudes, dam heights, and downstream distances from the dams. Furthermore, different taxonomic groups responded variably to dams, with stoneflies (Plecoptera), caddisflies (Trichoptera) and true bugs (Hemiptera) being the most sensitive groups (i.e. significant reduction in richness) among the taxa examined. Macroinvertebrate richness reductions were primarily attributed to changes in downstream substrate composition (i.e. from coarse to fine substrates), while abundance increases were potentially caused by replacements among taxa at downstream sites. Collectively, our results contribute to improving the prediction of the effects of dams on riverine macroinvertebrate assemblages and are valuable for guiding assessment and monitoring of river ecosystems, as well as sustainable dam development, planning and restoration.

Abstract:Dam construction and nutrient enrichment are two pervasive stressors in rivers worldwide, which trigger a sharp decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, the interactive effects of both stressors on multitrophic taxonomic groups remain largely unclear. Here, we used the multitrophic datasets captured by the environmental DNA (eDNA) approach to reveal the interactions between dams and nutrient enrichment on aquatic communities from the aspects of taxonomic α diversity, β diversity, and food webs. First, our data showed that dams and nutrient enrichment jointly shaped a unique spatial pattern of aquatic communities across the four river systems, and the dissimilarity of community structure significantly declined (i.e., structural homogenization) under both stressors. Second, dams and nutrients together explained 40-50% of the variations in aquatic communities, and dams had a stronger impact on fish, aquatic insects, and bacteria, yet nutrients had a stronger power to drive protozoa, fungi, and eukaryotic algae. Finally, we found that additive, synergistic, and antagonistic interactions of dams and nutrient enrichment were common and coexisted in river systems and led to significantly simplified aquatic food webs, with decreases in modularity (synergistic) and robustness (additive) and an increase in coherence (synergistic). Overall, our study highlights that eDNA-based datasets can provide multitrophic perspectives for fostering the understanding of the interactive effects of multiple stressors on rivers.

Abstract:Drastic changes in hydrological conditions within floodplain ecosystems create distinct microbial habitats. However, there remains a lack of exploration regarding the variations in microbial function potentials across the flooding and drought seasons. In this study, metagenomics and environmental analyses were employed in floodplains that experience hydrological variations across four seasons. Analysis of functional gene composition, encompassing nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur metabolisms, revealed apparent differences between the flooding and drought seasons. The primary environmental drivers identified were water level, overlying water depth, submergence time, and temperature. Specific modules, e.g., the hydrolysis of β-1,4-glucosidic bond, denitrification, and dissimilatory/assimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, exhibited higher relative abundance in summer compared to winter. It is suggested that cellulose degradation was potentially coupled with nitrate reduction during the flooding season. Phylogenomic analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) unveiled that the Desulfobacterota lineage possessed abundant nitrogen metabolism genes supported by pathway reconstruction. Variation of relative abundance implied its environmental adaptability to both the wet and dry seasons. Furthermore, a novel order was found within Methylomirabilota, containing nitrogen reduction genes in the MAG. Overall, this study highlights the crucial role of hydrological factors in modulating microbial functional diversity and generating genomes with abundant nitrogen metabolism potentials.
