Abstract:The occurrence and impacts of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in the aquatic environment have gained widespread attention over the past two decades. Due to large number of potential contaminants, monitoring campaigns, treatment plants, and proposed regulations should preferentially focus on specific pollutants with the highest potential for ecological and human health effects. In the present study, a multi-criteria screening approach based on hazard and exposure potentials was developed for prioritization of 405 unregulated EOCs already present in Chinese surface water. Hazard potential, exposure potential, and risk quotients for ecological and human health effects were quantitatively analyzed and used to screen contaminants. The hazard potential was defined by contaminant persistence, bioaccumulation, ecotoxicity, and human health effects; similarly, the exposure potential was a function of contaminant concentration and detection frequency. In total, 123 compounds passed the preselection process, which involved a priority index equal to the normalized hazard potential multiplied by the normalized exposure potential. Based on the prioritization scheme, 11 compounds were identified as top-priority, and 37 chemicals were defined as high-priority. The results obtained by the priority index were compared with four other prioritization schemes based on exposure potential, hazard potential, or risk quotients for ecological effects or human health. The priority index effectively captured and integrated the results from the more simplistic prioritization schemes. Based on identified data gaps, four uncertainty categories were classified to recommend: ① regular monitoring, derivation of environmental quality standards, and development of control strategies, ② increased monitoring, ③ fortified hazard assessment, and ④ increased efforts to collect occurrence and toxicity data. Overall, 20 pollutants were recommended as priority EOCs. The prioritized list of contaminants provides the necessary information for authoritative regulations to monitor, control, evaluate, and manage the risks of environmentally-relevant EOCs in Chinese surface water.

Abstract:A diversity of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are present in wastewater effluent, posing potential threats to receiving waters. It is urgent for a holistic assessment of the occurrence and risk of CECs related to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on national and regional scales. A data mining-based risk prioritization method was developed to collect the reported contaminants and their respective concentrations in municipal and industrial WWTPs and their receiving waters across China over the past 20 years. A total of 10,781 chemicals were reported in 8336 publications, of which 1037 contaminants were reported with environmental concentrations. While contaminant categories varied across WWTP types (municipal vs. industrial) and regions, pharmaceuticals and cyclic hydrocarbons were the most studied CECs. Contaminant composition in receiving water was closer to that in municipal than industrial WWTPs. Publications on legacy pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in WWTP decreased recently compared to the past, while pharmaceuticals and perfluorochemicals have received increasing attention, showing a changing concern over time. Detection frequency, concentration, removal efficiency, and toxicity data were integrated for assessing potential risks and prioritizing CECs on national and regional scales using an environmental health prioritization index (EHPi) approach. Among 666 contaminants in municipal WWTP effluent, trichlorfon and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid were with the highest EHPi scores, while 17ɑ-ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A had the highest EHPi scores among 304 contaminants in industrial WWTPs. The prioritized contaminants varied across regions, suggesting a need for tailoring regional measures of wastewater treatment and control.

Abstract:Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic environments can adversely impact ecosystems and human health even at low concentrations. This study assessed the risk of 162 CECs, including neonicotinoid pesticides, triazine pesticides, carbamate pesticides, psychoactive substances, organophosphate esters, antidepressants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and antibiotics in 10 drinking water sources and two tributaries (Jialing and Wujiang Rivers) of the Upper Yangtze River in Chongqing, China. Target screening detected 156 CECs at 0.01–2218.2 ng/L, while suspect screening via LC-QTOF-MS identified 64 CECs, with 13 pesticides, 29 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and 2 industrial chemicals reported for the first time in the Yangtze River Basin. Risk quotient-based ecological risk assessment revealed that 48 CECs posed medium to high risks (RQ > 0.1) to aquatic life, with antibiotics (n = 20) as the main contributors. Non-carcinogenic risks were below negligible levels, but carcinogenic risks from neonicotinoids, triazines, antidepressants, and antibiotics were concerning. A multi-criteria prioritization approach integrating occurrence, physico-chemical properties, and toxicological data ranked 26 CECs as high priority. This study underscores the importance of comprehensive CEC screening in rivers and provides insights for future monitoring and management strategies.

Abstract:China faces a serious challenge with water pollution posed by potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Comprehensive and reliable environmental risk assessment is paramount for precise pollution prevention and control. Previous studies generally focused on a single environmental compartment within small regions, and the uncertainty in risk calculation is not fully considered. This study revealed the current exposure status of 11 PTEs in surface water and sediment across China using previously reported concentration data in 301 well-screened articles. Ecological and human health risks were evaluated and the uncertainty related to calculation parameters and exposure dataset were quantified. PTEs of high concern were further identified. Results showed Mn and Zn had the highest concentration levels, while Hg and Cd had the lowest concentrations in both surface water and sediment. Risk assessment of individual PTE showed that high-risk PTEs varied by risk receptors and environmental compartments. Nationwide, the probability of aquatic organisms being affected by Mn, Zn, Cu, and As in surface water exceeded 10 %. In sediment, Cd and Hg exhibited high and considerable risk, respectively. As was identified as the major PTE threatening human health as its carcinogenic risk was 1.45 × 10-4 through direct ingestion. Combined risk assessment showed the PTE mixture in surface water and sediment posed medium and high ecological risk with the risk quotient and potential ecological risk index of 1.76 and 558.36, respectively. Adverse health effects through incidental ingestion and dermal contact during swimming were negligible. This study provides a nationwide risk assessment of PTEs in China's aquatic environment and the robustness is verified, which can serve as a practical basis for policymakers to guide the early warning and precise management of water pollution.
Screening hundreds of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in surface water from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD): Occurrence, distribution, ecological risk

Abstract:Increased synthetic chemical production and diversification in developing countries caused serious aquatic pollution worldwide with emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) detected in surface water rising health concerns to human and aquatic ecosystem even at low ng/L concentration with long-term exposure. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) area serves agriculture and industry for people in eastern China. However, the current knowledge on the occurrence and ecological risk of diverse EOPs which are present in the aquatic environment is limited. This study was to investigate the complexity and diversity of EOPs in surface water from 28 sampling sites, which were selected to represent urban, industrial or agriculture areas in the YRD area. In total 484 chemicals were analyze by a target screening approach using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS). 181 out of 484 EOPs were detected at least one site in the YRD area, and 44 analytes, mostly industrial chemicals and pesticides, were ubiquitous at all sampling sites. Most EOPs were industrial chemicals with 1H-benzotriazole and organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs) as the chemicals with highest concentrations. For 21 pesticides, mostly herbicides, maximum concentrations of atrazine and isoproturon were above the annual average environmental quality standards of Europe. Amantadine and DEET were the dominant pharmceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the YRD area. Compared to urban areas (mostly in Qinhuai River), chemical profiles from industrial areas were more complex. Industrial activities likely have a strong impact on the composition of chemical mixtures in surface water from the YRD area. ISO E Super, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and clotrimazole detected in this study are potentially persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals. Furthermore, results of risk assessment showed that hazard quotients of dimethyldioctadecylammonium, didecyldimethylammonium and octocrylene were higher than one and occur frequently, which indicates possibly adverse effects on fish species in the YRD area.

Abstract:HIV prevalence is higher in jails than in the community, yet many jails do not conduct HIV testing. Jails in Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the District of Columbia have implemented innovative rapid HIV testing programs. We have summarized the results of these programs, including the numbers of persons tested, rapid and confirmatory HIV test results, and numbers of persons newly diagnosed with HIV. We have described facilitators and challenges of implementation. These programs confirmed that rapid HIV testing in jails was feasible and identified undiagnosed HIV infection. Challenges included limited space to provide confidential rapid HIV testing and rapid turnover of detainees. Implementation required collaboration between local governments, health agencies, and correctional institutions. These programs serve as models for expanding rapid HIV testing in jails.
Occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern in surface and waste water from the Yangtze River chemical contiguous zone, China: Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment

Abstract:Limited knowledge exists regarding the occurrence, potential sources, and risks of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in surface and waste water from chemical contiguous zones. A total of 136 CECs were detected at 32 sampling sites along the Yangtze River, with concentrations ranging from 0.55 to 4.21 × 104 ng/L. Hydrocortisonacetate, cortisone, prednisone, enalapril and medroxyprogesterone were detected across all sampling sites. Hierarchical cluster analysis based on 47 core CECs yielded similar results compared with principal components analysis and identified two major clusters: wastewater sites and surface water sites. Distinct patterns of CECs were observed in wastewater from three industrial parks owing to variations in the industrial facilities and products within each park. Nineteen CECs were initially classified as presenting a high or medium risk to aquatic organisms. Further quantitative probabilistic risk assessment revealed that caffeine, trenbolone and norethindrone posed a threat to the most vulnerable aquatic species while high-risk sites mainly occurred downstream of the chemical industrial park. The joint ecological risk of high-risk CECs was evaluated using potentially affected fractions, which ranged from 0.44 % to 47.9 % with concentration addition and 0.33 % to 45.1 % with response addition. This suggests the need to consider the joint ecological risk of the detected compounds in future studies.

Abstract:Ecological risk assessment of emerging contaminants (ECs) is an international research hotspot and is also the focus of China's "14th Five-Year Plan". The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is one of the four major bay areas in the world and the most dynamic region in China. However, there are few studies on the risk assessment of ECs in the GBA, and there needs to be a systematic and comprehensive assessment of the ecological risk of ECs. We selectively collected environmental concentration and toxicity data reported in the literature before 2022 for 50 representative ECs. We use risk quotient (RQ), semi-probability, Margin of Safety (MOS), and joint Probability curve (JPC) methods for multiple-level risk assessment. The RQ results showed that there were primary ecological risks in 20 ECs. Nine ECs were screened by the semi-probability, MOS, and JPC methods. The total risk probability of nonylphenol (NP) to the GBA was 12.11 %, and the risk to the aquatic ecological environment was the highest, followed by α-endosulfan (α-END) and erythromycin (ERY). At the same time, a comprehensive assessment method was adopted to screen the list of medium and high-risk priority pollutants in the GBA. According to the comprehensive evaluation results, although the risk is low, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) still deserves widespread attention. The results showed that NP, α-END, ERY, and PFOA may be the most concerned ECs in the GBA. This research fills the gap on the ECs ecological risk assessment of the GBA and can provide a theoretical reference for managers in the follow-up of ECs regulatory governance.

Abstract:Freshwater systems near highly urbanized areas are extremely susceptible to emerging contaminants (ECs), yet their stereoscopic persistence in aquatic ecosystems and related risks remain largely unknown. Herein, we characterized the multi-mediums distribution of 63 ECs in Baiyangdian Lake, the biggest urban lake in the North of China. We identified variations in the seasonal patterns of aquatic EC levels, which decreased in water and increased in sediment from wet to dry seasons. Surprisingly, higher concentrations and a greater variety of ECs were detected in reeds than in aquatic animals, indicating that plants may contribute to the transferring of ECs. Source analysis indicated that human activity considerably affected the distribution and risk of ECs. The dietary risk of ECs is most pronounced among children following the intake of aquatic products, especially with a relatively higher risk associated with fish consumption. Besides, a comprehensive scoring ranking method was proposed, and 9 ECs, including BPS and macrolide antibiotics, are identified as prioritized control pollutants. These findings highlight the risks associated with aquatic ECs and can facilitate the development of effective management strategies.
A critical review of synthetic chemicals in surface waters of the US, the EU and China

Abstract:There is a wide concern that emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in surface water could adversely affect human health and wildlife. However, the geographic distribution, exposure pattern and ecological risk of emerging organic pollutants are poorly understood at a global scale. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on the exposure level of EOPs in China, the US and the EU based on the published literature. The hazard level of three categories of EOPs, namely pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides and industrial chemicals was further evaluated by adopting a novel Aquatic HazPi index that jointly accounts for the persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity and bioactivity. Furthermore, a correlation analysis of land use with the surface water exposure status regarding the synthetic chemicals was conducted. According to the published data reported between 2010 and 2016, the concentration of pesticides in the US was higher than in the EU and China. The concentration of PPCPs in the EU was generally lower than in both the US and China, while the concentration of industrial chemicals in China was higher than in the EU and the US. Among the chemicals whose median concentration in surface water was >10 ng/L, the antiretroviral Efavirenz, the pesticide Fipronil, and octocrylene, an industrial chemical and cosmetic ingredient, were found with the highest aquatic HazPi value. Lastly, the spatial distribution and concentration of hazardous EOPs was shown to depend on local landscape and land usages. Our study provides the first broad overview on the geographic distribution, exposure pattern of hazardous EOPs in the three major economic entities: China, the US and the EU. Emerging Contaminants in the Effluent of Wastewater Should Be Regulated: Which and to What Extent?

Abstract:Effluent discharged from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a major source of emerging contaminants (ECs) requiring effective regulation. To this end, we collected discharge datasets of pharmaceuticals (PHACs) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), representing two primary categories of ECs, from Chinese WWTP effluent from 2012 to 2022 to establish an exposure database. Moreover, high-risk ECs' long-term water quality criteria (LWQC) were derived using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. A total of 140 ECs (124 PHACs and 16 EDCs) were identified, with concentrations ranging from N.D. (not detected) to 706 μg/L. Most data were concentrated in coastal regions and Gansu, with high ecological risk observed in Gansu, Hebei, Shandong, Guangdong, and Hong Kong. Using the assessment factor (AF) method, 18 high-risk ECs requiring regulation were identified. However, only three of them, namely carbamazepine, ibuprofen, and bisphenol-A, met the derivation requirements of the SSD method. The LWQC for these three ECs were determined as 96.4, 1010, and 288 ng/L, respectively. Exposure data for carbamazepine and bisphenol-A surpassed their derived LWQC, indicating a need for heightened attention to these contaminants. This study elucidates the occurrence and risks of ECs in Chinese WWTPs and provides theoretical and data foundations for EC management in urban sewage facilities.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants pose a potential risk to aquatic ecosystems in the Pearl River Basin, China, owing to the high population density and active industry. This study investigated samples from eight sewage treatment plants, and five surface water bodies of related watersheds. To screen the risk of emerging contaminants (ECs), and clarify their sources, this study calculated the risk quotient of detected chemical and performed source identification/apportionment using the positive matrix factorization method. In total, 149 organic pollutants were identified. Pharmaceuticals showed significant concentrations in sewage treatment plant samples (120.87 ng/L), compared with surface water samples (1.13 ng/L). The ecological risk assessment identified three chemicals with a heightened risk to aquatic organisms: fipronil sulfide, caffeine, and roxithromycin. Four principal sources of contaminants were identified: pharmaceutical wastewater, domestic sewage, medical effluent, and agricultural runoff. Pharmaceutical wastewater was the primary contributor (60.4 %), to the cumulative EC concentration and to ECs in sewage treatment plant effluent. Agricultural drainage was the main source of ECs in surface water. This study provides a strategy to obtain comprehensive information on the aquatic risks and potential sources of EC species in areas affected by artificial activities, which is of substantial importance to pollutant management and control.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants (ECs) are increasingly recognized as a global threat to biodiversity and ecosystem health. However, the cumulative risks posed by ECs to aquatic organisms and ecosystems, as well as the influence of anthropogenic activities and natural factors on these risks, remain poorly understood. This study assessed the mixed risks of ECs in Dongting Lake, a Ramsar Convention-classified Typically Changing Wetland, to elucidate the major EC classes, key risk drivers, and magnitude of anthropogenic and natural impacts. Results revealed that ECs pose non-negligible acute (30% probability) and chronic (70% probability) mixed risks to aquatic organisms in the freshwater lake ecosystem, with imidacloprid identified as the primary pollutant stressor. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that cropland and precipitation were major drivers of EC contamination levels and ecological risk. Cropland was positively associated with EC concentrations, while precipitation exhibited a dilution effect. These findings provide critical insights into the ecological risk status and key risk drivers in a typical freshwater lake ecosystem, offering data-driven support for the control and management of ECs in China.

Abstract:Increasing and widely detected contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) pose a threat to drinking water safety. Compared with traditional methods, the exposure-activity ratio (EAR) method based on the ToxCast database may have unique advantages in risk assessment of drinking water sources because it provides massive multi-target high-throughput screening toxicity effect data assessment for chemicals with missing traditional toxicity data. In this study, 112 CECs at 52 sampling sites in drinking water sources in Zhejiang Province of eastern China were investigated. Based on EARs and occurrence, priority chemicals were identified as difenoconazole (priority level 1), dimethomorph (priority level 2), acetochlor, caffeine, carbamazepine, carbendazim, paclobutrazol and pyrimethanil (priority level 3). Different from single observable biological effect in traditional methods, a variety of observable biological effects caused by high-risk targets were explored through adverse outcomes pathways (AOPs), revealing ecological risks as well as human health risks, for example, hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas. Furthermore, the difference between the maximum EAR for a given chemical in a sample (EAR max ) and the toxicity quotient (TQ) in priority screening of CECs was compared. The results show that screening priority CECs based on the EAR method is acceptable and more sensitive, suggesting the difference between in vitro and in vivo toxic effects and the necessity of incorporating the harm degree of biological effects into the EAR method to screen priority chemicals in the future.

Abstract:Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) are ubiquitous in soil and water system and have become a great issue of environmental and public health concern since the 1990s. However, the occurrence and mechanism(s) of EDCs' migration and transformation at the watershed scale are poorly understood. A review of EDCs pollution in China's major watersheds (and comparison to other countries) has been carried out to better assess these issues and associated ecological risks, compiling a large amount of data. Comparing the distribution characteristics of EDCs in water environments around the world and analyzing various measures and systems for managing EDCs internationally, the significant insights of the review are: 1) There are significant spatial differences and concentration variations of EDCs in surface water and groundwater in China, yet all regions present non-negligible ecological risks. 2) The hyporheic zone, as a transitional zone of surface water and groundwater interaction, can effectively adsorb and degrade EDCs and prevent the migration of high concentrations of EDCs from surface water to groundwater. This suggests that more attention needs to be paid to the role played by critical zones in water environments, when considering the removal of EDCs in water environments. 3) In China, there is a lack of comprehensive and effective regulations to limit and reduce EDCs generated during human activities and their discharge into the water environment. 4) To prevent the deterioration of surface water and groundwater quality, the monitoring and management of EDCs in water environments should be strengthened in China. This review provides a thorough survey of scientifically valid data and recommendations for the development of policies for the management of EDCs in China's water environment.
Ecological Risk Assessment of Organochlorine Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Coastal Sediments in China

Abstract:Although the ecological risk of emerging contaminants is currently a research hotspot in China and abroad, few studies have investigated the ecological risk of pesticide pollutants in Chinese coastal sediments. In this study, nine pesticide pollutants included in the "List of New Key Pollutants for Control (2023 Edition)" issued by the Chinese government were used as the research objects, and the environmental exposure of pesticide pollutants in China's coastal sediments was analyzed. The baseline sediment quality criteria were deduced using the balanced distribution method, and a multi-level ecological risk assessment of pesticides in sediment was performed. The results showed that the nine pesticide pollutants were widespread in Chinese coastal sediments, with concentrations ranging from 0.01 ng·g−1 to 330 ng·g−1. The risk quotient assessment showed that endosulfan and DDT posed medium environmental risks to the Chinese coastal sediment environment, and PCBs posed medium risks in some bays of the East China Sea. The semi-probabilistic, optimized semi-probability evaluation and joint probability curve (JPC) assessments all show that endosulfan and DDT pose a certain degree of risk to the environment.

Abstract:Due to the extensive use and pseudo-persistence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), they are frequently detected in the aqueous environment, which has attracted global attention. In this paper, accumulation data of 81 PPCPs in surface water or sediment in China were reported. In addition, 20 kinds of PPCPs with high frequency were selected and their ecological risk assessment was conducted by risk quotient (RQs). The results indicated that the concentration detected in surface water and sediment ranged from ng/L (ng/kg) to μg/L (μg/kg) in China, which was similar to concentrations reported globally. However, contamination by certain PPCPs, such as caffeine, oxytetracycline, and erythromycin, was relatively high with a maximum concentration of more than 2000 ng/L in surface water. RQs revealed that 14 kinds of PPCPs pose no significant risk or low risk to aquatic organisms, while 6 kinds of PPCPs pose a high risk. Additionally, the pollution characteristics of PPCPs in each watershed are different. The Haihe River watershed and the central and lower Yangtze River were the regions of high concern for erythromycin. Triclosan has potential risks in the Pearl River watershed. This study determined the occurrence and risk of PPCPs in China in the past decade, providing a scientific basis for PPCPs pollution control and risk prevention.

Abstract:Over recent decades, increasing chemical contamination has greatly affected aquatic life and human health, even though most contaminants are present at low concentrations. The large-scale chemical industrial parks (CIPs) concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta account for over half of the total in China, and Jiangsu Province occupies one fifth of the Yangtze River Delta. Inevitably, the ecosystems could be affected by these CIPs. In this study, we collected 35 water and 12 sediment samples from the Yangtze River (Taizhou section) surrounding waters adjacent to concentrated CIPs and determined their cumulative chemical levels to be 0.2 to 28.4 μg/L and cumulative detections to be 11 to 39 contaminants with a median of 20 contaminants. 61 out of 153 screened chemicals were detected from at least one sampling site, and 6 contaminants, mostly semi-volatile organic compounds, appeared at all sites. Among these detected chemicals, di-n-octyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate were at the highest levels. Ecological assessment revealed that 4-chloroaniline, phenol and dibutyl phthalate possibly would induce adverse effects on Yangtze River (Taizhou) ecosystems. Further aided with an evaluation of integrated biomarker response (IBR) index, it was found that site W06 (downstream of Binjiang CIP wastewater inlet) was the location in greatest need of urgent action. As a result, the microbial diversity of sediments in the Yangtze River mainstream was significantly higher than that of tributaries, where CIPs wastewater entered.

Abstract:Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) include numerous chemicals that may pose known and unknown risks to the ecosystem, and identification and risk ranking of these compounds is essential for the environmental management. In this study, liquid and gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS) were used to characterize the occurrence of CECs in the surface water of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE). A total of 295 and 315 chemicals were identified by LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS, respectively. The occurrence of two compounds, erucamide and 2-phenylquinoline, was for the first time reported in the aquatic environment in YRE. The concentrations of 121 CECs, including 35 antibiotics, 49 pesticides and veterinary, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 21 phthalic acid esters were further quantified by target analysis, which showed the detection of 99 compounds in the surface water in the range of 7.07-4611.26 ng/L. Ecological risks of pollutants based on the risk quotient (RQ) method revealed that 13 pollutants posed ecological risks to the aquatic ecosystem (RQ > 1), and pesticides (n = 12) were the main risk contributors. Here, all CECs data sets were finally transformed and ranked in the framework of the toxicological priority index (ToxPi), and a total of 81 priority control pollutants were identified in the surface water of YRE. This study highlighted the necessity of suspect and nontarget screening for CECs in estuaries, and revealed the importance of localized contamination sources in urban and agricultural environment.

Abstract:Currently the hottest issues of environmental chemistry study have moved from traditional pollutants to emerging contaminants, such as persistent organic pollutants ( POPs ) , endocrine disrupting chemicals ( EDCs ) , pharmaceutical and personal care products ( PPCPs ) . The emerging contaminants can cause relatively high hazard and risk although their environmental levels are usually very low. Increasing attention has been paid to emerging contaminants all around the world. To address the environmental problem of emerging contaminants, their environmental risks should firstly be evaluated, and then risk control and management can be performed accordingly. Recently the study of emerging contaminants in China is gradually on the rise. A certain amount of studies have been conducted in China to address the environmental risk of emerging contaminants and their risk control. This paper reviews the research progress on the environmental risk assessment and control of emerging contaminants in China in recent years, which will provide references for further risk precaution and control.
