Abstract:To overcome ethical and technical challenges impeding the study of human dermal uptake of chemical additives present in microplastics (MPs), we employed 3D human skin equivalent (3D-HSE) models to provide first insights into the dermal bioavailability of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) present in MPs; and evaluated different factors influencing human percutaneous absorption of PBDEs under real-life exposure scenario. PBDEs were bioavailable to varying degrees (up to 8 % of the exposure dose) and percutaneous permeation was evident, albeit at low levels (≤0.1 % of the exposure dose). While the polymer type influenced the release of PBDEs from the studied MPs to the skin, the polymer type was less important in driving the percutaneous absorption of PBDEs. The absorbed fraction of PBDEs was strongly correlated (r2 = 0.88) with their water solubility, while the dermal permeation coefficient Papp of PBDEs showed strong association with their molecular weight and logKOW. More sweaty skin resulted in higher bioavailability of PBDEs from dermal contact with MPs than dry skin. Overall, percutaneous absorption of PBDEs upon skin contact with MPs was evident, highlighting, for the first time, the potential significance of the dermal pathway as an important route of human exposure to toxic additive chemicals in MPs.

Abstract:Little is known about how brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and microplastics (MPs) co-pollution influences soil organisms. Here, we investigated the impacts of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)-MPs in soil on the 28-d dynamic bioaccumulation, tissue damage, and transcriptional responses of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in Eisenia fetida by simulating different pollution scenarios (10 mg kg −1 DBDPE, 10 mg kg −1 DBDPE accompanied by 0.1 % ABS-MPs, and 10 mg kg −1 DBDPE accompanied by 0.1 % ABS-resin). The results show ABS resin did not influence DBDPE bioaccumulation or distribution, but ABS-MPs, particularly 74–187 μm size of MPs, prolonged DBDPE equilibrium time and significantly promoted DBDPE bioaccumulation in tissue (1.76–2.38 folds) and epidermis (2.72–3.34 folds). However, ABS-MPs and ABS-resin reduced DBDPE concentrations of intestines by 22.2–30.6 % and 37.3 %, respectively. DBDPE-MPs caused more serious epidermis and intestines damages than DBDPE. Additionally, compared to the control, DBDPE significantly up-regulated 1957 genes and down-regulated 2203 genes; meanwhile, DBDPE-MPs up-regulated 1475 genes and down-regulated 2231 genes. DBDPE and DBDPE-MPs both regulated lysosome, phagosome, and apoptosis as the top 3 enriched pathways, while DBDPE-MPs specifically regulated signaling pathways and compound metabolism. This study demonstrated that the presence of ABS-MPs aggravated the biotoxicity of DBDPE, providing scientific information for assessing the ecological risks of MPs and additives from e-waste in soil.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution and its potential environmental risks have drawn increasing concerns in recent years. Among which, microbeads in personal care and cosmetic products has becoming an emerging issue for their abundance as well as the knowledge gaps in their precise environmental behaviors in freshwater. The present study investigated the sorption process of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), the most widely applied and frequently encountered flame retardant in aquatic environments, on two sources of polyethylene (PE) particles (pristine PE particles and microbeads isolated from personal care and cosmetic products). Significantly enhanced adsorption capacity of microbeads was observed with up to 5-folds higher than the pristine PE particles. The sorption efficiency was also governed by solution pH, especially for the cosmetic-derived microbeads, indicating the strong adsorption of TBBPA on PE was dominated by both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, combined effects on redox status of zebrafish were evaluated with two environmental relevant concentrations of PE particles (0.5 and 5 mg L-1) using integrated biomarker response (IBR) index through a 14-d exposure. Co-exposure induced significant antioxidative stress than either PE or TBBPA alone when exposed to 0.5 mg L-1 of MPs. After 7-d depuration, the IBR value for combination treatments [TBBPA + PE (L)] was 3-fold compared with that in MP-free groups, indicating the coexistence might exert a prolonged adverse effects on aquatic organisms. These results highlight the probability of risk from microbead pollution in freshwater, where toxic compounds can be adsorbed on microbeads in a considerable amount resulting in potential adverse effects towards aquatic organisms. Extruded polystyrene microplastics as a source of brominated flame retardant additives in the marine environment: long-term field and laboratory experiments

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in the environment have become a global concern, not only for the physical effects of the plastic particles themselves but also for being vectors of chemical additives. In this context, little is known about the ability of MPs, particularly extruded polystyrene microplastics (XPS-MPs), to release organic chemical additives in the marine environment. In this study, a series of field and laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the leaching behaviour of organic additives including brominated flame retardants from XPS-MPs into seawater. The conducted experiments confirmed a rapid release of bisphenol A (BPA), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α-, β-, and γ-HBCDD) from the studied MPs followed by a slower rate of release over time. The effects of environmental factors on the leaching rates of these additives were also examined. Increasing Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) concentrations and the temperature of the seawater enhanced the release of additives by increasing their solubility and polymer flexibility. In contrast, pH tested at 7, 7.5 and 8 was found to have a minor effect on additives leaching; and salinity negatively affected the leaching rate likely due to their reduced solubility and reduced diffusion from the MPs. The present study provides empirical evidence of the behaviour of XPS-MPs as a source of organic additives in the marine environment that merit further investigation.

Abstract:The ubiquitous exposure of humans to microplastics (MPs) through inhalation of particles in air and ingestion in dust, water, and diet is well established. Humans are estimated to ingest tens of thousands to millions of MP particles annually, or on the order of several milligrams daily. Available information suggests that inhalation of indoor air and ingestion of drinking water bottled in plastic are the major sources of MP exposure. Little is known on the occurrence of MPs in human diet. Evidence is accumulating that feeding bottles and medical devices can contribute to MP exposure in newborns and infants. Biomonitoring studies of human stool, fetus, and placenta provide direct evidence of MP exposure in infants and children. MPs <20 μm were reported to cross biological membranes. Although plastics were once perceived as inert materials, MP exposure in laboratory animals is linked to various forms of inflammation, immunological response, endocrine disruption, alteration of lipid and energy metabolism, and other disorders. Whereas exposure to MPs itself is a concern, MPs can also be sources of exposure to plastic additives and other toxicants. Exposure of human cell lines to MP additives such as phthalates, bisphenols, and organotins causes adverse effects through the activation of nuclear receptors, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) α, β, and γ, and retinoid X receptor (RXR), leading to oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, immunotoxicity, thyroid hormone disruption, and altered adipogenesis and energy production. The size, shape, chemical composition, surface charge, and hydrophobicity of MPs influence their toxicity. Maternal transfer of MPs to the developing fetus has been demonstrated in exposed laboratory animals and through the analysis of human placenta. In laboratory animal studies, maternal exposure to MPs altered energy and lipid metabolism in offspring and subsequent generations. Moreover, concomitant with the global increase in plastics production, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in human populations has increased over the past five decades, and there is evidence to support the hypothesis that MPs and their additives are potential obesogens. Even though MP exposures are ubiquitous and toxic effects from such exposures are a concern, systematic studies on this topic remain urgently needed.

Abstract:The transformation process of contaminants on microplastics (MPs) exposed to sunlight has attracted increasing attention. However, the interactions between them are typically disregarded; therefore, this work investigated the photodegradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on three MPs (polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE)) and the interactions between these two. The inhibition of aged PS on the elimination of BDE-47 was due to light shielding, while aged PP and PE increased the degradation rate. More hydroxyl radicals (HO•) was detected in the PS system, which resulted in the higher degradation rate of BDE-47 on PS. A total of 33 different products were identified and four reaction pathways were presented, and the reaction mechanisms mainly included debromination, hydroxylation, carbon-oxygen-bond breaking and interactive reactions. The Ecological Structure Activity Relationship (ECOSAR) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) programs were used to evaluate the toxicity of reaction products, and the results indicated that even though BDE-47 was the most toxic, the interaction products were still toxic or harmful to aquatic organisms. This study provides significant information on the photodegradation of contaminants on common microplastics and their interaction, which cannot be ignored.

Abstract:There have been recent expressions of caution concerning the adequacy of methods of oxygen removal from biological systems under test for anoxic radiation response. Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated compounds connected by ester bonds between two benzene rings. There are 209 congeners of PBDEs, classified according to the number and position of the bromine atoms. Due to their low cost and superior flame retardant properties, PBDEs have been extensively used as flame retardants in electronic products, plastics, textiles, and other materials since the 1970s. PBDEs are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention because of their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity to both humans and wildlife. Due to their extensive use and significant quantities, PBDEs have been detected across a range of environments and biological organisms. These compounds are known to cause damage to the metabolic system, exhibit neurotoxicity, and pose reproductive hazards. This review investigates the environmental distribution and human exposure pathways of PBDEs. Using China—a country with significant PBDE use—as an example, it highlights substantial regional and temporal variations in PBDE concentrations and notes that certain environmental levels may pose risks to human health. The article then examines the toxic effects and mechanisms of PBDEs on several major target organs, summarizing recent research and the specific mechanisms underlying these toxic effects from multiple toxicological perspectives. This review enhances our understanding of PBDEs' environmental distribution, exposure pathways, and toxic mechanisms, offering valuable insights for further research and management strategies.

Abstract:Background Concerns on microplastics (MPs) in food are increasing because of our increased awareness of daily exposure and our knowledge gap on their potential adverse health effects. When particles are ingested, macrophages play an important role in scavenging them, potentially leading to an unwanted immune response. To elucidate the adverse effects of MPs on human health, insights in the immunotoxicity of MPs are essential. Objectives To assess the effect of environmentally collected ocean and land weathered MP particles on the immunological response of macrophages using a state-of-the art in vitro immunotoxicity assay specifically designed for measuring particle toxicity. Methods Environmentally-weathered macroplastic samples were collected from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and from the French coastal environment. Macroplastics were identified using (micro)Raman-spectrometry, FT-IR and Py-GC-MS and cryo-milled to obtain size-fractionated samples up to 300 μm. Physiochemical MP properties were characterized using phase contrast microscopy, gel-permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning colorimetry. Macrophages (differentiated THP-1 cells) were exposed to particles (<300 μm) for 48 h before assessment of cell viability and cytokine release. Using both the physiochemical particle properties and biological data, we performed multi-dimensional data analysis to explore relationships between particle properties and immunotoxicological effects. Results We investigated land-derived polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate, water-derived polypropylene macroplastics, and virgin polyethylene fibers and nylon MPs. The different plastic polymeric compositions and MP size classes induced distinct cytokine responses. Macrophages had the largest response to polyethylene terephthalate-particle exposure, including a dose-related increase in IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α secretion. Smaller MPs induced cytokine production at lower concentrations. Additionally, a relationship between both physical and chemical particle properties and the inflammatory response of macrophages was found. Discussion This research shows that MP exposure could lead to an inflammatory response in vitro , depending on MP material and size. Whether this implies a risk to human health needs to be further explored.
Bioaccessibility of BDE 47 in a Simulated Gastrointestinal System and Its Metabolic Transformation Mechanisms in Caco-2 Cells.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been regarded as ubiquitous environmental pollutants. However, the absorption and transformation of these compounds after ingestion are not well understood yet. In this study, the bioaccessibility and metabolic pathway of 2,2',4,4'- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) was investigated in an in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell. Gastric and intestinal bioaccessibilities of BDE47 in 5 kinds of spiked soil samples were ranging from 1139 0.83% to 36.02 +/- 4.34%, and 48.24 +/- 3.24% to 81.52 +/- 6.43%, respectively. Upon exposure to differentiated Caco-2 cells for 6 h, it was found that only a small amount of BDE47 in the gastrointestinal (GI) solution could pass through Caco-2 cells, and might enter the body. Moreover, BDE47 was found to be metabolized or transformed into BDE28, BDE75, BDE37, BDE32, BDE15 and BDE8 in Caco-2 cells. The metabolic pathway could be explained by using the Becke three-parameter hybrid functional (B3Lucifer yellow CHP) in the Density Functional Theory (DFT), denoted as the values of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) at the atoms of BDE47 and its metabolic products. The obtained results suggest that oral intake of PBDE5 is associated with low bioaccessibility, but also emphasize the risks associated with oral ingestion, namely toxicity resulting from the debromination of highly brominated diphenyl ethers. Although highly brominated diphenyl ethers are known to be the least toxic PBDEs, the debrominated products in human intestinal epithelia may elicit greater than expected toxicity. New insights into the size-independent bioactive potential of pristine and UV-B aged polyethylene microplastics

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:The present study investigates the morphological, physicochemical, and structural changes occurred by the UV-B aging process of low-density polyethylene microplastics (LDPE MPs), as well as the bioactive potential of both pristine and UV aged MPs towards healthy peripheral blood lymphocytes. Specifically, LDPE MPs (100–180 μm) prepared by mechanical milling of LDPE pellets, were UV-B irradiated for 120 days (wavelength 280 nm; temperature 25 °C; relative humidity 50 %) and further examined for alterations in their particle size and surface, their functional groups, thermal stability, and crystallinity (by means of SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD patterns, and TGA measurements, respectively). In parallel, isolated human peripheral blood lymphocytes were treated with different concentrations (25–500 μg mL −1 ) of either pristine or aged MPs (UV free and UV 120d LDPE MPs) for assessing the cytogenotoxic (by means of trypan blue exclusion test and the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay using cytochalasin-B) and oxidative effects (using the DCFH-DA staining) in both cases. According to the results, UV free and UV 120d -LDPE MPs, with a size ranging from 100 to 180 μm, can differentially promote cytogenotoxic and oxidative alterations in human lymphocytes. In fact, UV free LDPE MPs not being able to be internalized by cells due to their size, could indirectly promote the onset of mild oxidative and cytogenotoxic damage in human peripheral lymphocytes, via a dose-dependent but size-independent manner. The latter is more profound in case of the irregular-shaped UV 120d -LDPE MPs, bearing improved dispersibility and sharp edges (by means of cracks and holes), as well as oxygen-containing and carbonyl groups. To our knowledge, the present findings provide new data regarding the bioactive behavior of pristine and UV-B aged LDPE MPs, at least in the in vitro biological model tested, thus giving new evidence for their size-independent and/or indirect mode of action.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are known to act as carriers of heavy metals; however, little is known about the intrinsic chemical additives of MPs, such as hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), in terms of the adsorption behaviors and migration risks of heavy metals on MPs. Here, we reported the potential mechanisms and risks of HBCD inherent in polystyrene (PS) MPs with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) adsorption/desorption. A comparison of the adsorption capacity of the metals onto HBCD/PS composites (HBCD/PS) MPs (10.31–20.76 μmol/g), pure MPs (0–3.60 μmol/g), and natural minerals (0.11–13.88 μmol/g) showed that the addition of HBCD significantly promoted the metals adsorption onto the HBCD/PS MPs, and even exceeded that of natural particles. Isotherms and thermodynamic data suggested that the adsorption process of the metals onto the HBCD/PS MPs was spontaneous and endothermic, and that the adsorption was a mainly multi-ion process with an inclined direction. Furthermore, the results of SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analyses, as well as density functional theory well explained that the metals were mainly adsorbed on the –O and –Br groups of the HBCD/PS MPs via electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. More importantly, by comparing the desorption activity with natural river water and seawater, HBCD inherent in MPs can enhance the long-range transfer of metals carried by the HBCD/PS MPs from contamination sources to potential sink like oceans. Thus, the HBCD/PS MPs with high loading of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) could be potential secondary sources of these metals in seawater. Overall, these findings revealed the potential risks of flame retardant in MPs associated with metal migration, and advocated that flame retardant-related waste MPs should be included in coastal sustainable development.

Abstract:Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), recognized as persistent organic pollutants by the United Nations Environment Programme, are a class of brominated flame retardants that pose significant environmental and health risks. These compounds, consisting of two aromatic rings with up to 10 bromine atom substitutions, are categorized into penta-BDE, octa-BDE, and deca-BDE based on their bromine content, each exhibiting distinct environmental behaviors. PBDEs with fewer bromine atoms are more volatile and prone to bioaccumulation, raising significant health concerns. These compounds, often added physically to products, can leach into the environment, leading to pollution during production and after the parent polymer degrades. The transformation of higher brominated diphenyl ethers into less brominated forms in the environment further complicates their impact, with mono-brominated BDE-3 being particularly concerning due to its extended atmospheric photolysis lifetime and increased bioavailability. The management of PBDEs is challenging due to their persistence and transformation in the environment. As endocrine disruptors, they are linked to various acute and chronic toxicological effects, including neurodevelopmental toxicity, teratogenicity, and potential carcinogenicity. Their structural similarity to thyroid hormones allows them to disrupt thyroid hormone balance, leading to further health complications. The subject of this review is to summarize the current body of knowledge that is essential to understand their long-term effects on ecosystems and human health and to develop strategies to mitigate their adverse impacts.
Chemical stabilization of polymers: Implications for dermal exposure to additives

Abstract:Technical benefits of additives in polymers stand in marked contrast to their associated health risks. Here, a multi-analyte method based on gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed to quantify polymer additives in complex matrices such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and isolated human skin layers after dermal exposure ex vivo. That way both technical aspects and dermal exposure were investigated. The effects of polymer additivation on the material were studied using the example of LDPE. To this end, a tailor-made polymer was applied in aging studies that had been furnished with two different mixtures of phenol- and diarylamine-based antioxidants, plasticizers and processing aids. Upon accelerated thermo-oxidative aging of the material, the formation of LDPE degradation products was monitored with attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Compared to pure LDPE, a protective effect of added antioxidants could be observed on the integrity of the polymer. Further, thermo-oxidative degradation of the additives and its kinetics were investigated using LDPE or squalane as matrix. The half-lives of additives in both matrices revealed significant differences between the tested additives as well as between LDPE and squalane. For instance, 2-tert-butyl-6-[(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)methyl]-4-methylphenol (Antioxidant 2246) showed a half-life 12 times lower when incorporated in LDPE as compared to squalane. As a model for dermal exposure of consumers, human skin was brought into contact with the tailor-made LDPE containing additives ex vivo in static Franz diffusion cells. The skin was then analyzed for additives and decomposition products. This study proved 10 polymer additives of diverse pysicochemical properties and functionalities to migrate out of the polymer and eventually overcome the intact human skin barrier during contact. Moreover, their individual distribution within distinct skin layers was demonstrated. This is exemplified by the penetration of the procarcinogenic antioxidant N-phenylnaphthalen-2-amine (Neozon D) into the viable epidermis and the permeation through the skin of the neurotoxic plasticizer N-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS). In addition, the analyses of additive degradation products in the isolated skin layers revealed the presence of 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol in all layers after contact to a polymer with substances of origin like Antioxidant 2246. Thus, attention needs to be paid to absorption of polymer additives together with their degradation products when it comes to dermal exposure assessment.

Abstract:This review describes a wide variety of analytical approaches for the assessment of human exposure to organic chemicals associated with plastic additives, focusing on works published in the last decade on plasticisers, bisphenols, flame retardants and antioxidants. Physiologically based extraction tests serve as preliminary in-vitro assays to determine the bioaccessibility of these compounds from micro/nanoplastics in body fluids of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, or lung. Whenever plastic-laden compounds become bioavailable, human metabolism is to be monitored through the assessment of phase I and II metabolites. In this regard, analytical methods based on chromatography and mass spectrometry for human biomonitoring of parent compounds and their metabolites in biological samples (mostly urine and plasma) are discussed in depth. This review also covers the role of wastewater-based epidemiology in determining the overall human exposure of a given population to plastic-related species.

Abstract:Marine vertebrates are known to ingest significant amounts of microplastics (MPs). Once ingested, MPs might cause gastrointestinal injuries and serve as a path of harmful plastic components, such as phthalate esters (PAEs) and bisphenol A (BPA) in the food chain. However, there is a lack of standardized in-vitro methods capable of simulating fish uptake of chemicals from MPs in the environment as potential vectors of such contaminants. In this work, leaching and in-vitro oral bioaccessibility testing of PAEs and BPA from MPs were conducted batchwise using artificial seawater and gut fluids mimicking gastric, intestinal, and gastrointestinal compartments of marine vertebrates at physiological temperature. The environmental and physiologically relevant extraction tests were applied to medium-density polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) certified reference materials containing eight PAEs of varying hydrophobicity, namely , dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate, benzylbutyl phthalate, diethylhexyl phthalate, di-n-octyl phthalate, diisononyl phthalate and diisodecyl phthalate, and BPA (only in PE) as MP surrogates with realistic analyte concentrations of additives for primary MPs. The analysis of the leachates/gut fluid extracts was performed via dilute-and-shoot by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Only the most hydrophilic compounds, i.e. DMP, DEP and BPA, were found to get released significantly in saline waters, and exhibited the highest oral bioaccessibility rates (34–83 %). Based on our results, a dual-compartment physiologically relevant gastrointestinal test is recommended for appropriate estimation of fish bioaccessibility. The fish daily intakes of DMP, DEP and BPA from MPs, and seawater ingestion as well were estimated using several contamination scenarios (10th percentile as the low level, 50th percentile as the medium level and 90th percentile as the high level) based on probabilistic distributions and cumulative probability curves of measured environmental concentrations of (i) MPs in seawater throughout the world, (ii) DMP, DEP and BPA in beached MPs and those sampled in the open ocean (including both incurred and adsorbed contaminants), and (iii) DMP, DEP and BPA in seawater as reported in recent literature. Under a medium-level concentration scenario (50th percentile) in marine settings, and taking the gastrointestinal bioaccessibility factor into account, the daily intake of DMP, DEP and BPA from MPs accounted for a mere 0.02 % of the waterborne contribution. Hence, the ingestion of MPs should not be considered the primary route of fish exposure to BPA and the most polar PAEs in marine environments. However, more studies on the local and the global scales for mass concentrations of MPs and additives in marine settings are needed for further confirmation of our findings.

Abstract:Background Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have become a growing concern in dermatology due to their widespread presence in cosmetic formulations and the environment. These minuscule synthetic polymer particles prompt an essential exploration of their potential impact on dermatological homeostasis. Aims This study aims to investigate the effects of MPs and NPs on the integumentary system. Specifically, it seeks to understand the potential cutaneous alterations, inflammatory responses, and disruptions to the skin's physiological functions caused by these synthetic particles. Patients/Methods The investigation involves a comprehensive analysis of emerging research on MPs and NPs. This includes their presence in cosmetic formulations and environmental pervasiveness. The study delves into their capacity to breach the cutaneous barrier, raising concerns about the implications of prolonged exposure. Results Evidence suggests that MPs and NPs may indeed incite cutaneous alterations, provoke inflammatory responses, and disturb the homeostasis of the skin's physiological functions. Their small dimensions enhance their capability to breach the cutaneous barrier, further emphasizing the apprehensions associated with prolonged exposure. Conclusions While a precise understanding of the implications of MPs and NPs on dermatological health remains an ongoing scientific endeavor, this study underscores the growing significance of these synthetic particles. The findings emphasize the need for proactive measures to safeguard both individual well‐being and environmental preservation in the context of dermatological health.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in plastic resin pellets collected from 65 beaches across 27 countries worldwide. They were detected at 49 locations at concentrations of the sum of 49 congeners of up to 46 ng/g-pellet and a median of 2 ng/g-pellet. These values are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (median, 51 ng/g-pellet). This difference can be attributed to lower production of the Penta-BDE technical mixture, which is used extensively in some countries, and lower availability of brominated flame retardants for equilibrium partitioning than PCBs. Tetra-, penta-, and hexa-brominated congeners (BDE-47, 99, 100, 153, 154) were dominant over a deca-substituted congener (BDE-209) in many samples; this was significantly detected in pellets from some locations. Results indicate that pellets reflect the pollution status of PBDEs in the dissolved phase in seawater. From the ranking of the summed concentrations of six major PBDE congeners (Σ6PBDEs), we propose five levels of pollution categorization (ng/g-pellet): no (<0.2), slight (0.2–0.78), moderate (0.78–2.6), high (2.6–8.5), and extreme (>8.5) local pollution. The USA and neighboring countries were categorized as extreme (17–36 ng/g-pellet), western Europe and Japan were categorized as high (≤8.8), and most Asian and African countries were categorized as slight (<0.8). Notably, extreme or high pollution levels were also observed in countries with no history of PBDE production, such as Ghana (Σ6PBDEs up to 16 ng/g-pellet), the Philippines (7.5), and Hong Kong (7.7). Scrapped electrical and electronic waste might explain these anomalously high values.

Abstract:Plastics released into the environment can be degraded by physical erosion, biodegradation, photocatalytic activity, and oxidation, resulting in smaller plastics particles. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic particles relatively smaller than 5 mm in size. Furthermore, microplastics with particle sizes less than 1000 or 100 nm are known as nano-plastics (NPs). The presence and effect of MPs and NPs in human body has not been adequately studies, thus we aim to explain the origins of MPs and NPs adept, carefully explore the pathways by which MPs and NPs enter the body system and highlight the impact of MPs and NPs on human health. Major examples include Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). MPs and NPs were found to have two sources (primary and secondary). The primary sources are materials purposely produced to suit household and industrial uses, such as exfoliants for skin care products, construction, and packaging materials. Secondary sources originated from the decomposition/degradation of large plastic products over time. Plastics were found in plants (fruits and vegetables), animals (fish, crab, shrimp, oysters, and mussels), water (taps, sachet, and bottled water), salt, sugar, and honey. Plastics' impact on the human ecosystem is getting increasingly severe, and it is imperative that proper attention be paid to this issue. The vast number of MPs and NPs available can influence the lives of the populace in each geographic area. In this review article, we identified three routes through which MPs and NPs gain entrance into the human body: oral ingestion, cutaneous (skin contact), and inhalation. Furthermore, we investigated and summarized the impacts of MPs and NPs on human health. The most impacted organs in the body included the lungs, blood, kidney, brain, ovary, testes, and intestines. In this review, we offered a viable solution that includes the use of biodegradable polymers, increased usage of eco-friendly biotechnology and engineering solutions, and the implementation of regulatory measures. In future, we intend to investigate the bioaccumulation and effect of MPs/NPs on human health.
