Abstract:The extensive search for high-capacity negative electrodes for sodium-ion batteries had led to the investigation of various nanomaterials capable of storing sodium ions in their structures through the combined conversion and alloying reactions. Among many nanomaterials, fin metal oxides and fin metal sulfides are considered highly promising compounds due to their high theoretical capacities. However, there have been growing concerns regarding the inability of these materials to deliver substantial reversible capacities, which often leads to an incomplete conversion-alloying reaction. In this review, particular attention is paid to the recent advances in the development of Sn-based anodes for SIBs to understand in detail the obstacles hindering the full utilization of these materials. We first present a short overview of sodium storage mechanisms of Sn-based materials and the synthetic strategies used to prepare various Sn-based nanostructures. We focus on the approaches to mitigate the structural deformation of these materials. In addition, we highlight efforts devoted to understanding the formation and evolution of solid-electrolyte interface during the continuous sodiation-desodiation process, which is significantly different from the phenomena in the lithium-ion batteries and thus requires different approaches. This review further addresses the standing challenges in developing Sn-based materials and points to future research directions in hope to usher the practical applications of the sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:With the increased demand in anode materials with high energy density , high rates, and long life applied to new energy vehicles and energy storage devices, it is necessary to develop anode materials with excellent electrochemical properties for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Sn-based anode, as an alternative to traditional graphite anode LIBs materials, has attracted much attention because of its high specific capacity (Li 4.4 Sn is 993 mAg −1 ), environmental friendliness, high safety, and low cost, and it is considered to be one of the most promising alternative anode materials for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. However, the huge volume expansion, pulverization, and agglomeration of the Sn-based anode materials during the cycle have become the biggest obstacle to its development. Sn-based anode materials include Sn metal-based material, Sn-based oxides, and Sn-based sulfides. In this review, we describe recent advances in Sn-based anode materials, the lithium storage mechanism of Sn-based anodes are briefly introduced, followed by a discussion focusing on studies of the modification of Sn-based materials. Finally, the review further identifies the challenges and problems currently facing the development of Sn-based materials and provides an outlook in the anode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:Because of concerns regarding shortages of lithium resources, and the urgent need to develop low-cost and high-efficiency energy storage systems, research and applications of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have re-emerged in recent years. In this review, recent advances in high-capacity Sn-based anode materials for stable SIBs are highlighted, including tin (Sn) alloys, Sn oxides, Sn sulfides, Sn selenides, Sn phosphides and their composites. The reaction mechanisms between Sn-based materials and sodium are clarified. Multiphase and multiscale structural optimizations of Sn-based materials to achieve good sodium storage performance are emphasized. Full-cell designs using Sn-based materials as anodes and further development of Sn-based materials are discussed from a commercialization perspective. This review provides insight into the preparation of future high-performance Sn-based anode materials and the construction of sodium-ion full batteries with a high energy density and long service life.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The search for new electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been an important way to satisfy the ever-growing demands for better performance with higher energy/power densities, improved safety and longer cycle life. Nanostructured metal oxides exhibit good electrochemical properties, and they are regarded as promising anode materials for high-performance LIBs. In this feature article, we will focus on three different categories of metal oxides with distinct lithium storage mechanisms: tin dioxide (SnO(2)), which utilizes alloying/dealloying processes to reversibly store/release lithium ions during charge/discharge; titanium dioxide (TiO(2)), where lithium ions are inserted/deinserted into/out of the TiO(2) crystal framework; and transition metal oxides including iron oxide and cobalt oxide, which react with lithium ions via an unusual conversion reaction. For all three systems, we will emphasize that creating nanomaterials with unique structures could effectively improve the lithium storage properties of these metal oxides. We will also highlight that the lithium storage capability can be further enhanced through designing advanced nanocomposite materials containing metal oxides and other carbonaceous supports. By providing such a rather systematic survey, we aim to stress the importance of proper nanostructuring and advanced compositing that would result in improved physicochemical properties of metal oxides, thus making them promising negative electrodes for next-generation LIBs.

New evidence of mitochondria dysfunction in the female Alzheimer's disease brain: deficiency of estrogen receptor-β.

Abstract:Accumulating evidence suggests that mitochondria are important targets for the actions of estrogens and studies indicated that localization of estrogen receptor β (ERβ) in neuronal mitochondrial (mtERβ) might directly affect neuronal mitochondrial function in vitro. However, it is unknown what expression levels and how important mtERβ is in the human brain, particularly in a brain with Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the present study, using rapidly autopsied human brain tissue, we found that the frontal cortices of female AD patients exhibited significantly reduced mtERβ, along with reduced mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase activity, and increased protein carbonylation compared to that in normal controls. The correlation between mtERβ expression and mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase activity in the female human brain is significant. To understand the possible mechanisms of mtERβ in AD-related mitochondrial dysfunction, using ERβKO mice as a model, we found that lack of ERβ enhanced brain reactive oxygen species generation and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential under Aβ peptide insult compared to brain mitochondria from wild-type control mice. Our studies, for the first time, demonstrated neuronal mtERβ expression in the human brain and the deficiency of mtERβ in the female AD brain is associated with the dysfunction of mitochondria. Our results from ERβKO mice demonstrated that ERβ depletion-induced mitochondrial dysfunction is mediated through increasing reactive oxygen generation and reduction of mitochondria membrane potential. These results indicate that ERβ depletion impairs mitochondrial function in mice, and reduction of brain mtERβ may significantly contribute to the mitochondrial dysfunction involved in AD pathogenesis in women.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) featuring the merits of low cost and abundant resources have attracted extensive interest and are considered one of the best alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large radius of Na + limits the conductivity and energy density of SIBs, and the search for electrode materials with excellent sodium storage properties is imminent. Among various anodes, SnS-based anodes have been considered an excellent candidate for SIBs due to their unique layered structure and superior theoretical capacity. However, the slow ion migration of SnS and the huge volume expansion during the sodiation/desodiation process can lead to material crushing, which results in an impractical capacity. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the recent research progress of SnS and SnS-based composites in SIBs in terms of structural properties, synthesis methods, electrochemical reaction mechanisms, and modification strategies. Among all the modification strategies, carbon coating and heterostructure design of SnS are the effective approaches to these challenges. Finally, this review provides an outlook on the future research and development of SnS-based anodes for high-performance SIB applications, which provides ideas for future research on SnS-based anode materials and promotes their rapid development and practical applications.

Abstract:As state‐of‐the‐art rechargeable energy‐storage devices, lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are widely applied in various areas, such as storage of electrical energy converted from renewable energy and powering portable electronic devices and electric vehicles (EVs). Nevertheless, the energy density and working life of current commercial LIBs cannot satisfy the rapid development of these applications. It is urgently required that the electrochemical performance of LIBs, which is mainly determined by the electroactive electrode materials, is improved. However, commercial graphite‐based anode materials deliver a relatively low theoretical capacity of 372 mA h g −1 , severely hindering the increase of the energy density of LIBs. Recently, M‐based anode (M represents Si, Ge, and Sn) materials have attracted great attention due to their high theoretical capacity and reasonable anodic voltage. However, the application of M‐based anode materials is seriously limited by a series of several critical problems, such as poor kinetics and huge volume change on cycling. Here, these fundamental problems leading to poor electrochemical performance are discussed, and a series of reasonable nanostructures for M‐based anodes with improved electrochemical performance is summarized, demonstrating that the dimensional control in structure design plays a critical role for solving these problems.

Abstract:<p>Sn-based composites are considered as one of the promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacities and suitable operation voltages. However, they suffer the huge volume change and unstable electrolyte/electrode interface during sodiation/desodiation, which causes structure collapse and serious capacity loss. In the past few years, great efforts have been made to ameliorate the performances of Sn by rationally designing electrode structures/components or optimizing electrolyte composition. Here, the underlying sodium-storage reactions in Sn are summarized based on the results from theoretical calculations and advanced characterizations. Then, the recent progresses of Sn-based composites, i.e. Sn-based alloys, Sn/C composites, and Sn oxides/sulfides, with various structures for SIBs are discussed in details. After that, how the electrolyte affects solid-electrolyte interphase and the electrochemical performances is shown. Finally, the future directions for the applications of Sn-based composites in SIBs are suggested. Hence, this review provides a comprehensive scenario about the applications of Sn-based composites in SIBs. Realization High-Voltage Stabilization of O3-Type Layered Oxide Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries by Sn Simultaneously Dual Modification

Abstract:The total global production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in electric vehicles and stationary energy storage devices has increased sharply to reach the targeted Net Zero by 2050. This leads to concerns about the future and long-term availability and cost of critical raw materials (cobalt, nickel, lithium and copper) employed in LIBs. Therefore, alternative new-generation batteries with comparable performance but using less critical raw materials are needed. Sodium-ion Batteries (NIBs) offer a wealth of possibilities for inexpensive and sustainable energy storage devices. To maximize their potential, new cathode materials with high energy densities and stable structures are required. Cobalt-free sodium transition metal oxides of O3 type are a predominant cathode for NIBs due to their appreciable specific capacity, reduction in the use of critical elements, and the potential to rival LiFePO 4 in terms of energy density. However, rapid capacity fading caused by serious structural and interfacial degradation hamper this process. Herein, we provide a novel Sn-modified O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode with improved high-voltage stability by bulk Sn doping and surface coating simultaneously. The bulk substitution of Sn 4+ stabilizes the crystal structure by alleviating the irreversible high voltage phase transition and lattice structure degradation. In the meantime, the spontaneously formed tin rich surface layer effectively inhibits surface parasitic reactions and improves interfacial stability during cycling. As a result, the Sn-modified NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode exhibited excellent cycling performance by an almost doubled capacity retention increase after 200 cycles within 2.0-4.1V. The influence of Sn modification on the crystal structure and electrochemical properties has been investigated for the first time, and the mechanism was studied through an extensive analysis by in situ XRD, HRTEM, FIB-SEM, XPS and Mössbauer spectroscopy. This work offers an industrially feasible strategy to simultaneously stabilize the bulk structure and interface for O3-type layered cathodes for SIBs and raises the possibility of similar effective strategies to be employed for other energy storage materials Figure 1

Abstract:Metal oxides, such as SnO2, Fe2O3, CoO, Co3O4, NiO, CuO and MnO2 etc., are promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and safety characteristics. However, the commercial utility of metal oxide anodes has been hindered to date by their poor cycling performance. Recent study shows that metal oxides with hollow nano/microstructures exhibit fascinating performance as anode materials for Li ion batteries. In this review, we first describe the current commonly used synthetic methods to create metal oxide hollow structures, and for each method, we also comment on its advantages and shortages compared with other methods. According to some typical examples and the following theoretical analysis, we show the promising use of hollow metal oxides as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and future developments of metal oxide hollow structures are further discussed.

Abstract:Tin-based materials possess a high-capacity as a potential anode for Na-ion batteries (SIBs), but the inferior electric conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics limit their further development. In this paper, we have successfully constructed multiphase structure SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 by combining the electrochemical induction and in-situ hydrothermal method to effectively alleviate these problems. The continuous addition of sulfur source (thioacetamide, TAA) results in the formation of a transition from pure product (SnO 2 ) to double structure (SnO 2 /SnS), and finally multiphase structure (SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 ). Compared to single or bimetal chalcogenides, the tri-metal chalcogenides have strengthened synergistic effects between diverse components. Additionally, the SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 composites exhibit small grain size and abundant mesoporous structure, which aid to shorten the distance of ions transfer and increase surface active sites for Na-ions storage. The SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 anode displays optimal diffusion coefficient (1.94 × 10 −15 cm 2 s −1 ) and cycling durability, with a recoverable specific discharge ability of 401 mA h g −1 over 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 and a maintenance overpasses 77 %. These results indicate that the construction of multiphase structures is a prospective way to improve the reaction kinetics of Sn-based materials for SIBs.

Abstract:Nowadays, lithium ion batteries as one of alkali metal ( lithium, sodium, potassium, etc.) ion batteries have been widely used in all aspects of industry and life, and contribute to the success of automation, informatization and intelligence of society. However, due to the low abundance of lithium in the crust of earth, sodium-ion batteries based on sodium of high abundance have attracted extensive attention of researchers and society. Among all the component, cathode material is an important factor restricting the practicality of sodium ion batteries. Cathode materials need to be developed for practical application. P2-structure layered composite metal oxide sodium ion battery cathode material has many advantages , such as abundant resources , simple preparation , stable structure , high discharge capacity , good rate performance , good cycle stability , etc. It has attracted extensive attention of researchers and has a practical prospect. This series of materials are complex due to the combination of various transition metal elements. In this paper, the P2-structure materials containing single transition metal , binary transition metals , ternary transition metals and even more components and their optimization and modification are systematically reviewed. The future development prospects and predictions are given. The main problem of P2-structure cathode material is to improve the initial charge capacity. The use of oxygen redox is an important direction to solve this problem. In addition , optimizing the composition of materials and adopting raw materials with abundant reserves, low cost, high safety and environmental friendliness is also an important research direction for further reducing costs and protecting the environment.

Abstract:P2-type layered oxide materials have attracted widespread attention as advanced cathodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their excellent rate potential and attractive cost-effectiveness. However, the unexpected dissolution of transition metal (TM) ions and the annoying Jahn-Teller effect leading to rapid capacity fading and low capacity remain obstacles to their commercial applications. To tackle these handicaps, we introduced a synergistic effect based on surface modification and doping strategies to obtain air-stable sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) protective aluminum (Al)-doped manganese-based layered oxide cathode. The surface Na2CO3 nanolayer is created by converting residual alkali ions, which enhances the air stability of the cathode and scavenges hydrofluoric acid into the fluoride-rich cathode electrolyte interphase layer during cycling, resulting in a steady interfacial interaction. In addition, Al doping causes TMO6-octahedral shrinkage and inhibits structural distortion, thereby affecting structural evolution and phase transition. These findings provide valuable insights into improving the performance of layer oxide cathodes for next-generation low-cost batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, with the growing demand for higher capacity, longer cycling life, and higher power and energy density of lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the traditional insertion‐based anodes are increasingly considered out of their depth. Herein, attention is paid to the structural reorganization electrode, which is the general term for conversion‐based and alloying‐based materials according to their common characteristics during the lithiation/delithiation process. This Review summarizes the recent achievements in improving and understanding the lithium storage performance of conversion‐based anodes (especially the most widely studied transition metal oxides like Mn‐, Fe‐, Co‐, Ni‐, and Cu‐based oxides) and alloying‐based anodes (mainly including Si‐, Sn‐, Ge‐, and Sb‐based materials). The synthesis schemes, morphological control and reaction mechanism of these materials are also included. Finally, viewpoints about the challenges and feasible improvement measures for future development in this direction are given. The aim of this Review is to shed some light on future electrode design trends of structural reorganization anode materials for LIBs.

Herein, we probe the mechanisms of the incompletely reversible reactions of SnO2 and SnS using analytical and electrochemical techniques and demonstrate that the capacity retention of these species can be further increased using coordination atom regulation and hybridization with carbon. The superior cyclability (sustainable operation for >500 cycles) of the optimized SnS/C composite is attributed to its reinforced conversion and alloying reactions resulting from enhanced bulk structure, higher interface stability, and accelerated kinetics. This work also provides guidance for the development of other alloy-based anode materials, especially regarding the choice of coordination atoms and the understanding of the role of carbon coatings in property optimization.

Abstract:The development of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density is of utmost importance to meet the growing demand for 3C devices and electric automobiles worldwide. Over the past three decades, there has been significant interest in Sn‐based anode materials for LIBs, owing to their high specific capacity and low charge/discharge plateau. Two primary strategies, namely alloying and nanotechnology, have been extensively investigated to enhance the electrochemical performance of Sn‐based anodes. However, the complete understanding and recognition of the full potential of these strategies, both in the past and future, remains incomplete. This review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on the development of Sn‐based anodes prepared using the aforementioned strategies. Furthermore, it emphasizes the practical potential of Sn‐based anodes and the associated preparation technologies for large‐scale production. Establishing a strong connection between these technologies and high‐performance Sn‐based composites is crucial, and this objective will be achieved through an extensive comparison and detailed introduction of relevant concepts. By addressing these aspects, this review will contribute to the advancement of Sn‐based anodes research and its application in high‐performance LIBs, ultimately driving progress in the field of energy storage.

Abstract:The typical two-dimensional layered structure materials, MXenes, are widely used in energy conversion and storage due to their high conductivity, ion transport ability, and rich surface structures. Recently, MXenes and their composites have been widely employed in secondary batteries, especially sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), with obvious performance improvement. As anodic materials, MXenes, metal oxides, metal sulfides, and other materials contain certain advantages in Na+ storage, but they individually also suffer from some issues and challenges, such as low conductivity and serious volume change, as well as the associated low capacity and poor cyclability. By virtue of the advantages of MXenes, with their high conductivity and ultrathin two-dimensional structures, the construction of surface-functionalized MXenes and MXene-based composites could effectively improve the conductivity and mass-transport properties of composites, alleviate volume expansion, and, thus, enhance the capacity properties, rate performances, and cycle stability of SIBs. Herein, we review the latest research status of the structural design of MXenes and Mxene-based materials, as well as their applications in SIBs. We briefly introduce the research background and introduce MXenes and SIBs, and focus on their structural designs and corresponding applications in SIBs. Finally, the important challenges of MXene-based materials applied to SIBs are discussed, and the future prospects of MXene-based composite developments in SIBs are presented.

Abstract:While the practical application of electrode materials depends intensively on the Li+ ion storage mechanisms correlating ultimately with the coulombic efficiency, reversible capacity, and morphology variation of electrode material upon cycling, only intercalation-type electrode materials have proven viable for commercialization up to now. This paper reviews the promising anode materials of metal vanadates (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni, Li) that have high capacity, low cost, and abundant resource, and also discusses the related Li+ ion storage mechanism. It is concluded that most of these (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni) exhibit irreversible redox reactions upon lithiation/delithiation accompanied by large volume expansion, which is not favorable for industrial applications. In particular, Li3VO4 with specific intercalation Li+ ion storage mechanism and compatible merits of safety and energy density exhibits great potential for practical application. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress in Li3VO4 research, including the representative fabrication approaches for advanced morphology and state-of-the-art technologies to boost performance and the morphology variation associated with Li+ ion storage mechanisms. Furthermore, an outlook on where breakthroughs for Li3VO4 may be most likely achieved will be provided.
