Abstract:The blood sugar level in normal toadfish was determined by modified Folin and glucose oxidase methods. More than 1800 fish were used during five summers and one winter. In January and April, the blood sugar level was more than 100 mg% by both methods. The summer level was approximately 33 mg% (Folin) and 20 mg% (glucose oxidase). Significant daily fluctuations in the blood sugar level were found during the spawning period. The daily standard deviation was usually less than 10 mg%. The results suggest that the blood sugar is under a more efficient control system than was expected.

Abstract:With the rapid development of photo-responsive nanomaterials, photo-triggered therapeutic strategies such as photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been new alternatives to current cancer therapeutic methods. Herein, we have fabricated oxygen vacancy-engineered BaTiO 3 (BTO-Ov) nanoparticles (NPs) for near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered PTT, PDT, and catalytic therapy cooperatively for significantly improving cancer therapy. Compared to pristine BaTiO 3 nanoparticles, BTO-Ov has stronger NIR light absorption and narrower band gap structure, which results in superior photothermal conversion and superoxide radical generation capabilities through PTT and PDT. Meanwhile, due to the existence of Ti 3+ , BTO-Ov also exhibits peroxidase (POD)-like activity to produce hydroxyl radical under tumor environment, which can be further improved under 808 nm light irradiation. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that such a multifunctional therapeutic nanoplatform can achieve a high therapeutic efficacy triggered by a single NIR light irradiation. The defect engineering strategy can be used as a general approach to fabricate multifunctional cancer therapeutic nanoplatform.

Abstract:The photothermal therapy (PTT) technique is regarded as a promising method for cancer treatment. However, one of the obstacles preventing its clinical application is the non-degradability and biotoxicity of the existing heavy-metal and carbon-based therapeutic agents. Therefore, a PTT material with a high photothermal efficiency, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility is urgently wanted. Herein, we report a titanium oxide-based therapeutic agent with a high efficacy and low toxicity for the PTT process. We demonstrated that Magnéli-phase Ti8O15 nanoparticles fabricated by the arc-melting method exhibit >98% absorption of near infrared light and a superior photothermal therapy effect in the in vivo mouse model. The Ti8O15 nanoparticle PTT material also shows a good biocompatibility and biosafety. Our study reveals Magnéli-phase titanium oxide as a new family of PTT agents and introduces new applications of titanium oxides for photothermal conversion.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy (PTT) has gained more and more attention in the field of cancer therapy owing to its outstanding efficacy. However, the overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) within tumor cells upon heating can alleviate the damage of high temperature to cells, which significantly restrict the therapeutic efficiency of PTT. To achieve a better therapeutic efficacy, combining other kinds of therapeutic modalities such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy with PTT has been widely reported. However, most of these combination therapeutic systems may suffer from the issue of increased side effect. Recently, an oxygen-independent modality, thermodynamic therapy (TDT), has shown its great promise in combining with PTT for developing combination therapeutic modality. TDT utilizes carbon radicals to kill cancer cells upon heating, and is a PTT-synergized modality which can improve the efficacy of PTT without inducing additional side effect. In this review, we summarize recent advances in organic nanomaterials for photothermal/thermodynamic combination therapy of cancer. Organic nanomaterials with NIR-I or NIR-II light triggered PTT/TDT are sequentially introduced. At last, conclusion and future perspectives of this field are discussed.

Abstract:Carbon dots ( CDs) with unique optical properties are a stable and highly biocompatible fluorescent material offering enormous application potential in optical imaging and photothermal cancer therapy (PTT). However, the low photothermal conversion efficiency and the high power density still impede the development of CDs in PTT. Herein, the nitrogen and oxygen co- doped CDs (N-O-CDs) with strong absorbance in the near infrared (NIR) region were prepared from 1,3,6-trinitropyrene (TNP) and N-containing polymer of branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) via a one-step molecular fusion route. The asprepared black N-O-CDs with high photostability and superb biocompatibility can be utilized not only as a new fluorescence imaging agent but also as an excellent PTT agent in vivo. The structure, optical properties, bioimaging, photothermal effect in vitro, and therapeutic efficiency in vivo of the N-O-CDs are investigated. The low power density (0.8 Wcm(-2)) and high photothermal conversion efficiency (eta = 38.3%) facilitate N-O-CDs to act as an ideal theranostic agent for fluorescence imaging and photothermal therapy in vitro and in vivo. Gd2O3/b‐TiO2 composite nanoprobes with ultra‐high photoconversion efficiency for MR image‐guided NIR‐II photothermal therapy

Abstract:Low photoconversion efficiency and limited tissue penetration are the major barriers for photothermal therapy (PTT) agent application. Here, an efficient organic/inorganic dual‐PTT agent guided by MRI was proposed. It is proved the oxygen vacancy band narrowed its band gap that led to NIR‐II region absorb. Furthermore, the defect energy level trapping carrier and conjugate synergistic heat generation result in high photoconversion efficiency. Photothermal therapy (PTT), as an important noninvasive and effective tumor treatment method, has been extensively developed into a powerful cancer therapeutic technique. Nevertheless, the low photothermal conversion efficiency and the limited tissue penetration of typical photothermal therapeutic agents in the first near‐infrared (NIR‐I) region (700–950 nm) are still the major barriers for further clinical application. Here, we proposed an organic/inorganic dual‐PTT agent of synergistic property driven by polydopamine‐modified black‐titanium dioxide (b‐TiO2@PDA) with excellent photoconversion efficiency in the second NIR (NIR‐II) region (1000–1500 nm). More specifically, the b‐TiO2 treated with sodium borohydride produced excessive oxygen vacancies resulting in oxygen vacancy band that narrowed the b‐TiO2 band gap, and the small band gap led to NIR‐II region wavelength (1064 nm) absorbance. Furthermore, the combination of defect energy level trapping carrier recombination heat generation and conjugate heat generation mechanism, significantly improved the photothermal performance of the PTT agent based on b‐TiO2. The photothermal properties characterization indicated that the proposed dual‐PTT agent possesses excellent photothermal performance and ultra‐high photoconversion efficiency of 64.9% under 1064 nm laser irradiation, which can completely kill esophageal squamous cells. Meanwhile, Gd2O3 nanoparticles, an excellent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent, were introduced into the nanosystem with similar dotted core–shell structure to enable the nanosystem achieve real‐time MRI‐monitored cancer therapeutic performance. We believe that this integrated nanotherapeutic system can not only solve the application of PTT in the NIR‐II region, but also provide certain theoretical guidance for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy has attracted significant attention as a minimally invasive therapy methodology. In this work, we report PEGylated nickel carbide nanocrystals (Ni3C NCs) as an efficient photothermal agent for the first time. The nanoparticles exhibit a broad absorption from the visible to the near-infrared regions and a rapid rise in temperature when irradiated by an 808 nm laser even at a concentration of 100 mu g mL(-1). In vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity assays demonstrate they have good biocompatibility, which lays an important foundation for their biological application. In vitro studies reveal the efficient damage of cancer cells by the exposure of 808 nm laser with a power density of 0.50 W cm(-2). Furthermore, hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase biotin-dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining of tumor slices confirmed the obvious destruction of cancer cells in vivo by an 808 nm laser (0.50 W cm(-2)) after only a 5 min application. Our work may open up a new application domain for transition metal carbides for biomedicine.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising cancer therapy modality with significant advantages such as precise targeting, convenient drug delivery, better efficacy, and minimal adverse effects. Photothermal therapy effectively absorbs the photothermal transducers in the near-infrared region (NIR), which induces the photothermal effect to work. Although PTT has a better role in tumor therapy, it also suffers from low photothermal conversion efficiency, biosafety, and incomplete tumor elimination. Therefore, the use of nanomaterials themselves as photosensitizers, the targeted modification of nanomaterials to improve targeting efficiency, or the combined use of nanomaterials with other therapies can improve the therapeutic effects and reduce side effects. Notably, noble metal nanomaterials have attracted much attention in PTT because they have strong surface plasmon resonance and an effective absorbance light at specific near-infrared wavelengths. Therefore, they can be used as excellent photosensitizers to mediate photothermal conversion and improve its efficiency. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the key role played by noble metal nanomaterials in tumor photothermal therapy. It also describes the major challenges encountered during the implementation of photothermal therapy.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy (PTT) has shown significant potential in cancer treatment. However, developing nanomaterial-based photothermal agents with good biocompatibility and high photothermal conversion efficiency (PTCE) remains a key challenge. Titanium has been widely employed as biomedical materials based on their excellent biocompatibility. In this work, the titanium based plasmonic photothermal therapy (Ti-PPTT) is demonstrated. Using the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE), the metallic Ti can be fabricated into the two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs), similar to exfoliating other layered 2D materials. The 2D Ti NSs exhibited good biocompatibility, high extinction coefficient of 20.8 Lg-1cm1 and high PTCE of 73.4%, owing to localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR); which is significantly higher than other photothermal agents, including Au (21%), MoS2 (24.4%), BP (28.4%) and Ti3C2 MXene (30.6%). Consequently, 2D Ti-PPTT exhibited a notable therapeutic effect in a human hepatocellular carcinoma model without side effects. Our study could pave a new avenue for PTT using metal Ti and arouse a wide interest in the potential efficient PTT for other elemental transition metals owing to their LSPR. Furthermore, the efficient photothermal effect and environmental friendliness of Ti NSs make them deserve more research toward other application, such as solar energy harvesting and sea water desalination.

Abstract:The photothermal properties, conversion mechanism, and influencing factors of 2D MXenes in photothermal applications are introduced in detail, and the latest progress of photothermal treatment of 2D MXenes in NIR‐II is summarized. The use of photothermal therapy (PTT) with the near‐infrared II region (NIR‐II: 1000–1700 nm) is expected to be a powerful cancer treatment strategy. It retains the noninvasive nature and excellent temporal and spatial controllability of the traditional PTT, and offers significant advantages in terms of tissue penetration depth, background noise, and the maximum permissible exposure standards for skin. MXenes, transition‐metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides are emerging inorganic nanomaterials with natural biocompatibility, wide spectral absorption, and a high photothermal conversion efficiency. The PTT of MXenes in the NIR‐II region not only provides a valuable reference for exploring photothermal agents that respond to NIR‐II in 2D inorganic nanomaterials, but also be considered as a promising biomedical therapy. First, the synthesis methods of 2D MXenes are briefly summarized, and the laser light source, mechanism of photothermal conversion, and evaluation criteria of photothermal performance are introduced. Second, the latest progress of PTT based on 2D MXenes in NIR‐II are reviewed, including titanium carbide (Ti3C2), niobium carbide (Nb2C), and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C). Finally, the main problems in the PTT application of 2D MXenes to NIR‐II and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy is a very promising treatment method in the field of cancer therapy. The photothermal nanomaterials in near-infrared region (NIR-I, 750-900 nm) attracts extensive attention in recent years because of the good biological penetration of NIR light. However, the penetration depth is still not enough for solid tumors due to high tissue scattering. The light in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) allows deeper tissue penetration, higher upper limit of radiation and greater tissue tolerance than that in the NIR-I, and it shows greater application potential in photothermal conversion. This review summarizes the photothermal properties of Au nanomaterials, two-dimensional materials, metal oxide sulfides and polymers in the NIR-II and their application prospects in photothermal therapy. It will arouse the interest of scientists in the field of cancer treatment as well as nanomedicine.

Abstract:Photo-responsive nanomaterials show promising photothermal therapy (PTT) applications for superficial and internal tumors. However, most photo-synthesizers possess a small extinction coefficient and low photothermal conversion efficacy, limiting their use for advanced PTT. Herein, a facile and inexpensive method was employed to synthesize ultra-thin titanium carbide (Ti 2 C) MXene nanorods for the PTT of breast cancer. The average width and length of the prepared Ti 2 C nanorods were about 20 nm and 80 nm, respectively, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility and significantly encapsulated into the 4T1 cancer cells. The nanorods revealed promising photothermal properties and increased temperature from 20 to 58 °C enough for tumor ablation after 808 nm laser light irradiation, indicating remarkable cancer PTT in vitro. Moreover, Ti 2 C nanorods show favorable photostability and significant photothermal conversion efficiency of 63.3 % because of good near-infrared (NIR) absorption. This work proves ultra-thin Ti 2 C MXene nanorods as a new photothermal agent for phototherapy applications.

Abstract:A stable alkyne‐bridged conjugated polymer, BBT‐BTE, is designed with strong NIR‐II absorption, and its nanoparticles achieve a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 71%. BBT‐BTE NPs achieve complete tumor ablation without any recurrence, and the biosafety of these NPs has also been further proven. This study offers feasible insight into the design of efficient photothermal materials in the NIR‐II window. Organic photothermal materials (PTMs) in the near‐infrared (NIR) range (1000–1700 nm) are more favorable for photothermal therapy (PTT) therapeutic applications because of their greater depth of tissue penetration and better biosafety. However, the photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the few NIR‐II‐responsive organic PTMs that have been investigated is still slightly low. Here, a stable alkyne‐bridged conjugated polymer, BBT‐BTE, are explored with a high PCE for tumor ablation within the NIR‐II window. The BBT‐BTE synthesized by the Stille coupling reaction has strong NIR‐II absorption, and their nanoparticles (NPs) achieved a 71% PCE under 1064 nm laser excitation, with good photothermal stability. BBT‐BTE NPs are shown to be effective in completely ablating tumors without any recurrence in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Additionally, the biosafety of these NPs is further proven by biochemical analysis and tissue biopsy. This study developed a high‐performance NIR‐II PTM and offered practical and feasible insights into the design of efficient photothermal materials specifically for the NIR‐II window.

Abstract:The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of Ba M-type (BaFe/sub 12-x/(Ti/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/)/sub x/O/sub 19/) ferrite-epoxy resin composites were investigated. After measuring the complex permittivities of the samples, the regions of complex permeabilities in which the reflection loss (R.L.) becomes less than -20 dB (-20 dB Regions), were calculated. Altering the conditions such as sintering temperature, particle size and the ratio of ferrite powder in the composite samples, resulted in frequency dependencies of permeabilities that agree well with the calculated -20 dB regions, and which lead to an expansion in bandwidth (frequency range (/spl Delta/f) of R.L. <-20 dB). The BaFe/sub 9/(Ti/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/)/sub 3/O/sub 19/ ferrite-resin composite, which was produced by sintering at 1573 K for 20 h, crushing into powder (150-300 /spl mu/m) and mixing with epoxy resin at a ratio of 70 mass%, exhibited a wide bandwidth (/spl Delta/f=7.2 GHz) from 13.75 GHz to 20.95 GHz. /spl Delta/f values of 1.4-5.4 GHz in the frequency range 6.35-15.65 GHz, were obtained by changing the composition of the BaFe/sub 12-x/(Ti/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/)/sub x/O/sub 19//epoxy resin composite from x=3.5 to 4.5.

Abstract:Although photothermal therapy (PTT) have aroused substantial attention in the treatment of various types of tumors, the antitumor therapeutic efficacy is still unsatisfactory when using PTT alone. Very recently, oxygen-independent free-radical generation based on thermodynamic therapy (TDT) has emerged as a potential powerful therapeutic strategy for hypoxic cancer therapy. Herein, in this work, an intelligent hypoxia-independent free radical nanogenerator (CuS/AIPH@MnO2, denoted as CAM) was fabricated by in situ coating manganese dioxide (MnO2) shell onto the surface of as 2,2-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane] dihydrochloride (AIPH)-loaded mesoporous hollow mesoporous copper sulfide (CuS). The local hyperthermal generated by CAM upon NIR laser irradiation not only permitted PTT, but also promoted the disintegration of AIPH for generation of oxygen-independent free radicals, exerting the advantages of combination therapy of PTT/TDT for effective tumor ablation. Simultaneously, both in vitro and in vivo results have demonstrated the synergistic therapeutic efficacy of PTT/TDT for remarkable tumor growth inhibition. In addition, the favorable biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were verified both in vitro and in vivo. Collectively, this work proposed an attractive and promising strategy in cancer therapy based on generation of oxygen-irrelevant toxic free radicals, which exhibits great potential for clinical translations in hypoxic tumor therapy.

Abstract:20h in an argon atmosphere, and crushed into 0.53mm pieces. The pieces were nitrided at 8501050°C for 5h and then slow-cooled (furnace cooling) to room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere. Second near-infrared nanomaterials for cancer photothermal immunotherapy

Abstract:Photothermal immunotherapy has drawn worldwide attentions for malignant tumors based on noninvasive methods of nanomaterials and immune-associated drugs in the past years. Photothermal immunotherapy performed excellent effects and less adverse reactions in the treatment of tumors compared with classical treatments including surgical removement, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) and single immunotherapy. Moreover, second near-infrared (NIR-II) light performed more advantages in PTT/PDT and photoacoustic imaging than first near-infrared (NIR-I) light. Photothermal immunotherapy with the irradiation of NIR-II light can not only rapidly eliminate topical solid tumors located in deeper solid tumor tissue, but also it can trigger tumor-associated congenital and acquired immune responses which can prevent cancer local recurrence and distant metastasis. Photothermal immunotherapy under the NIR-II light irradiation could be one of most essential and potential methods for cancer in the future. Therefore, we reviewed the related nanoparticles of photothermal immunotherapy with the irradiation of NIR II window in cancer based on published articles in the study.

Nanoheterojunction Engineering Enables NIR‐II‐Triggered Photonic Hyperthermia and Pyroelectric Catalysis for Tumor‐Synergistic Therapy

Abstract:The multifunctional plasmon‐pyroelectric nanoheterojunction is fabricated based on 2D BTO@Nb2C‐PEG nanosheets, which is featured with excellent photothermal property and pyroelectric catalysis‐mediated robust reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, possessing a powerful capacity for tumor inhibition. This research offers a photo‐thermoelectric catalyst for hyperthermia‐/ROS‐mediated cancer precision therapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a non‐invasive strategy shows high promise in cancer treatment. However, owing to the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and light irradiation‐mediated rapid electron–hole pair recombination, the therapeutic efficacy of PDT is dramatically discounted by limited reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Herein, a multifunctional theranostic nanoheterojunction is rationally developed, in which 2D niobium carbide (Nb2C) MXene is in situ grown with barium titanate (BTO) to generate a robust photo‐pyroelectric catalyst, termed as BTO@Nb2C nanosheets, for enhanced ROS production, originating from the effective electron–hole pair separation induced by the pyroelectric effect. Under the second near‐infrared (NIR‐II) laser irradiation, Nb2C MXene core‐mediated photonic hyperthermia regulates temperature variation around BTO shells facilitating the electron–hole spatial separation, which reacts with the surrounding O2 and H2O molecules to yield toxic ROS, achieving a synergetic effect by means of combinaterial photothermal therapy with pyrocatalytic therapy. Correspondingly, the engineered BTO@Nb2C composite nanosheets feature benign biocompatibility and high antitumor efficiency with the tumor‐inhibition rate of 94.9% in vivo, which can be applied as an imaging‐guided real‐time non‐invasive synergetic dual‐mode therapeutic nanomedicine for efficient tumor nanotherapy.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy (PTT) in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1350 nm) has presented great superiority in cancer treatment recently. However, it is generally limited to a few photothermal agents and most of them often suffer from intricate design and complicated synthesis. Herein, by subtly extracting nanoparticles from ancient ink (AINPs), a versatile AINP dispersion with definite ingredients, good biosafety, and excellent photothermal effect in the NIR-II window was obtained. In vivo trials demonstrated that the obtained AINP dispersion provides a promising alternative for tumor sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping. Besides, under the guidance of photoacoustic imaging, the metastatic SLNs could be accurately eliminated by NIR-II laser irradiation. The preliminary biosafety of AINP dispersion has also been systematically confirmed. Therefore, we believe this work would provide a green and effective strategy for PTT of tumor in the NIR-II window.

Abstract:Immunotherapy has emerged as one of the major strategies for cancer treatment. Unlike conventional therapeutic methods, immunotherapy can treat both primary and distant metastatic tumors through triggering systematic antitumor immune responses and can even prevent tumor recurrence after causing the formation of immune memory. However, immunotherapy still has the issues of low patient response rates and severe immune-related adverse events in clinical practices. In this regard, the combination of nanomedicine-mediated therapy with immunotherapy can modulate a tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment and thus amplify antitumor immunity. In particular, second near-infrared (NIR-II) photothermal therapy (PTT), which utilizes light conversions to generate heat for killing cancer cells, has shown unique advantages in combining with immunotherapy. In this review, the recent progress of engineering nanomedicines for NIR-II PTT combinational immunotherapy is summarized. The role of nanomedicine-mediated NIR-II PTT in inducing immunogenic cell death and reprogramming the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment for facilitating immunotherapy are highlighted. The development of NIR-II-absorbing organic and inorganic nonmetal and inorganic metal nanomedicines for the NIR-II PTT combinational immunotherapy of cancer is also introduced in detail. Lastly, the current challenges and future perspectives of these nanomedicines for combinational immunotherapy are proposed.
