Abstract:The working environment of a picking robot is complex, and the motion-planning algorithm of the picking manipulator will directly affect the obstacle avoidance effect and picking efficiency of the manipulator. In this study, a time-optimal rapidly-exploring random tree (TO-RRT) algorithm is proposed. First, this algorithm controls the target offset probability of the random tree through the potential field and introduces a node-first search strategy to make the random tree quickly escape from the repulsive potential field. Second, an attractive step size and a “step-size dichotomy” are proposed to improve the directional search ability of the random tree outside the repulsive potential field and solve the problem of an excessively large step size in extreme cases. Finally, a regression superposition algorithm is used to enhance the ability of the random tree to explore unknown space in the repulsive potential field. In this paper, independent experiments were carried out in MATLAB, MoveIt!, and real environments. The path-planning speed was increased by 99.73%, the path length was decreased by 17.88%, and the number of collision detections was reduced by 99.08%. The TO-RRT algorithm can be used to provide key technical support for the subsequent design of picking robots.

Abstract:In automated fiber placement (AFP), addressing the continuous motion planning challenge of redundant layup manipulators in complex environments, this paper proposes an offline redundancy optimization algorithm based on improved RRT* (Rapidly-exploring Random Trees). This algorithm maximizes the utilization of kinematic redundancy to derive smooth joint trajectories devoid of collisions and singularities. Firstly, the algorithm entails constructing a search map by eliminating joint configurations that violate constraints, and subsequently planning and optimizing the joint path by minimizing a multi-objective cost under the map constraint. Furthermore, several strategies are introduced to enhance RRT* for redundancy optimization. These strategies include a piecewise Gaussian sampling strategy (PGSS) to guide efficient tree growth within complex channels and enable joint sampling constrained by task coordinates. Additionally, the improved Steering and Local Optimization method are proposed to plan joint motion while considering intermediate task sequences. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated in handling complex motion planning scenarios, such as layup involving complex path curves or dense obstacles. Experimental results validate the algorithm's capability to find feasible collision-free and singularity-free paths in relevant scenarios, provided such paths exist. Moreover, trajectory smoothness is optimized with increasing iterations.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, we present a new path planning algorithm based on the rapidly exploring random tree-fixed node (RRT*FN) algorithm for manipulators. It addresses the problem that RRT*FN complex environment processing is not fast enough to meet real-time requirements, and RRT*FN is basically impossible to search for an effective manipulator path in a narrow-channel environment. In the new path planning algorithm, a heuristic sampling method is adopted and the leaf nodes outside the ellipsoids are preferentially deleted to address the node removal problem, resulting in better search paths and faster search speeds. When the nodes are expanded, new nodes are generated due to goal gravity and random point gravity, with the weight values dynamically adjusted via dichotomy, and the new nodes are expanded to the goal point twice to more rapidly obtain a tree extension direction that is closer to the goal point. For boundary points, the issues of narrow channels and stepped obstacles can be effectively solved by extending the local environment sampling boundaries. To optimize the paths, the redundant intermediate nodes are simplified based on the triangle inequality. Simulation analyses show that the proposed planner can adapt to a variety of scenarios in real time while satisfying optimal path conditions.

Collision-Free Target Grasping in Complex and Cluttered Environment for Efficient Task and Motion Planning

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm that enhances the efficiency of robotic manipulation by enabling the robot to reach its target with fewer obstacles being removed, thus leading to faster performance times. The challenges faced by robotic manipulation in complex and cluttered environments (e.g., supermarkets, factories, etc.), where changes are constantly occurring, are well-known. To tackle these challenges, the robot should generate a collision-free path to reach the target while requiring minimal obstacle relocation to improve task efficiency. To achieve this, the proposed task planning algorithm incorporates the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm and a modified Vector Field Histogram Plus (VFH+). The algorithm was tested in simulated service domain environments with objects placed on shelves followed by real-robot experiments. In both experiments, the results of the proposed algorithm demonstrated a lower number of obstacle removals (up to 37%) and consequently faster performance times compared to other existing methods (improved by up to 36%). Thus, the results showed that the proposed algorithm reduces the number of obstacle relocations and improves performance time compared to existing methods. As a result, the proposed method was evaluated as an improvement in task efficiency over previous approaches and has significant implications for the use of robotic manipulation in service domains with cluttered environments.

An Improved Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees Algorithm Combining Parent Point Priority Determination Strategy and Real-Time Optimization Strategy for Path Planning

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of long path planning time and large number of redundant points in the rapidly-exploring random trees algorithm, this paper proposed an improved algorithm based on the parent point priority determination strategy and the real-time optimization strategy to optimize the rapidly-exploring random trees algorithm. First, in order to shorten the path-planning time, the parent point is determined before generating a new point, which eliminates the complicated process of traversing the random tree to search the parent point when generating a new point. Second, a real-time optimization strategy is combined, whose core idea is to compare the distance of a new point, its parent point, and two ancestor points to the target point when a new point is generated, choosing the new point that is helpful for the growth of the random tree to reduce the number of redundant points. Simulation results of 3-dimensional path planning showed that the success rate of the proposed algorithm, which combines the strategy of parent point priority determination and the strategy of real-time optimization, was close to 100%. Compared with the rapidly-exploring random trees algorithm, the number of points was reduced by more than 93.25%, the path planning time was reduced by more than 91.49%, and the path length was reduced by more than 7.88%. The IRB1410 manipulator was used to build a test platform in a laboratory environment. The path obtained by the proposed algorithm enables the manipulator to safely avoid obstacles to reach the target point. The conclusion can be made that the proposed strategy has a better performance on optimizing the success rate, the number of points, the planning time, and the path length.

Abstract:In a future intelligent factory, a robotic manipulator must work efficiently and safely in a Human-Robot collaborative and dynamic unstructured environment. Autonomous path planning is the most important issue which must be resolved first in the process of improving robotic manipulator intelligence. Among the path-planning methods, the Rapidly Exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm based on random sampling has been widely applied in dynamic path planning for a high-dimensional robotic manipulator, especially in a complex environment because of its probability completeness, perfect expansion, and fast exploring speed over other planning methods. However, the existing RRT algorithm has a limitation in path planning for a robotic manipulator in a dynamic unstructured environment. Therefore, an autonomous obstacle avoidance dynamic path-planning method for a robotic manipulator based on an improved RRT algorithm, called Smoothly RRT (S-RRT), is proposed. This method that targets a directional node extends and can increase the sampling speed and efficiency of RRT dramatically. A path optimization strategy based on the maximum curvature constraint is presented to generate a smooth and curved continuous executable path for a robotic manipulator. Finally, the correctness, effectiveness, and practicability of the proposed method are demonstrated and validated via a MATLAB static simulation and a Robot Operating System (ROS) dynamic simulation environment as well as a real autonomous obstacle avoidance experiment in a dynamic unstructured environment for a robotic manipulator. The proposed method not only provides great practical engineering significance for a robotic manipulator's obstacle avoidance in an intelligent factory, but also theoretical reference value for other type of robots' path planning.

Abstract:Path planning for robots in complex orchard environments is crucial to ensure efficient and safe completion of harvesting tasks. The use of flexible multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) robots further adds to the complexity of the task. Therefore, based on a rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm, a bidirectional path planning method adjusting the expansion direction and dynamic step (EDDS-bi-RRT) according to the scene information is proposed to improve the planning efficiency of multi-DOF robots in the configuration space (C-space). Two improvements are introduced to the algorithm: (1) The algorithm begins by designating the search's starting point as the tree's root node. Subsequently, it generates an extended tree by continuously adding leaf nodes through sampling. The expansion direction is set from the nearest node to the target point, and the cosine and sine factors are introduced to adjust the direction when the sampling point collides with obstacles, and the extended trees will be exchanged for growth from the target point to the nearest node accordingly. (2) The minimum distance between the robot links and obstacles is the maximum safe distance d with which the robot links can move in the workspace. Then, d is converted to the expansion step in the high-dimensional C-space by introducing the matrix operator norm. This way, the explore efficiency is improved significantly in complex environments while the computational time and the path length decrease. Simulations in different scenarios are performed based on a 17-DOF humanoid dual-arm apple harvesting robot developed in our lab, and the results show that the proposed algorithm presents a higher efficiency and shorter planning time and path length compared with previous similar algorithms. In addition, experiments in the lab orchard environments are also performed to indicate that the EDDS-bi-RRT algorithm can be applied to generate collision-free path points for multi-DOF robots in unstructured environments safely and effectively.

Most working scenes of industrial robots are static scenes and from a previous static scene to a current static scene is a multi-scene. Finding optimal paths with limited time is difficult for motion planning in a high-dimensional space or in multiple scenes. The low efficiency of motion planning of rapidly-exploring random tree star in high-dimensional spaces, low adaptability of global replanning to multiple scenes are addressed by proposing the local replanning based on goal dynamically-guiding rapidly-exploring random tree star (LR-GD-RRT*). The algorithm contributes to fast path tree exploration and multi-scene motion planning. For path tree exploration, sampling points heuristically generating and new nodes growth by goal dynamically-guiding are proposed to reduce the blind and ineffective searches. Moreover, dynamic adjustment of size of new node neighborhood according to density of the obstacles is proposed to search for more neighbor nodes to optimize the path and also to reduce ineffective computation to improve efficiency. For multi-scene, three steps of trimming, re-exploration, and reconnection for local replanning are proposed. For path tree exploration, simulations in 2D plane, 3D space, and the manipulator show that GD-RRT* improves convergence speed, shortens path length and search time, compared with RRT*. For multi-scene, simulations in 3D space and with the manipulator show that the local replanning of the current scene has both lower path cost and higher planning efficiency compared with the global replanning of the previous scene. Motion of the six-degree-of-freedom robot end in a real scene also verifies the effectiveness of the LR-GD-RRT*.

Abstract:In this article, a novel manipulability-based optimal rapidly exploring random tree (RRT*) path planning strategy is proposed for industrial robot manipulators. When sampling in the search space, two constraints, namely, path length and manipulability measure, are imposed to find a minimal-cost path connecting the start and goal points. By tracking the generated path, a robot manipulator's end-effector can traverse the workspace with a shorter length and, meanwhile, avoid configuration singularities. A constrained closed-loop inverse kinematics technique is utilized to exploit the kinematic redundancy to assign a higher manipulability to an end-effector position. Additionally, the metrics of path length and manipulability measure are used to determine the adaptive step size for the RRT* planner. This helps the space-filling tree to grow efficiently toward unsearched areas and find an optimal path. Simulation analysis and experimental results of a six-degree-of-freedom FANUC-M-20iA industrial robot illustrate the efficiency of the proposed path planning methods.

Path planning of a manipulator based on an improved P_RRT* algorithm

Abstract:Aiming to build upon the slow convergence speed and low search efficiency of the potential function-based rapidly exploring random tree star (RRT*) algorithm (P_RRT*), this paper proposes a path planning method for manipulators with an improved P_RRT* algorithm (defined as improved P_RRT*), which is used to solve the path planning problem for manipulators in three-dimensional space. This method first adopts a random sampling method based on a potential function. Second, based on a probability value, the nearest neighbour node is selected by the nearest Euclidean distance to the random sampling point and the minimum cost function, and in the expansion of new nodes, twice expansion methods are used to accelerate the search efficiency of the algorithm. The first expansion adopts the goal-biased expansion strategy, and the second expansion adopts the strategy of random sampling in a rectangular area. Then, the parent node of the new node is reselected, and the path is rerouted to obtain a clear path from the initial point to the target point. Redundant node deletion and the maximum curvature constraint are used to remove redundant nodes and minimize the curvature on the generated path to reduce the tortuosity of the path. The Bezier curve is used to fit the processed path and obtain the trajectory planning curve for the manipulator. Finally, the improved P_RRT* algorithm is verified experimentally in Python and the Robot Operating System (ROS) and compared with other algorithms. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the improved algorithm.

Abstract:In the future of automated production processes, the manipulator must be more efficient to complete certain tasks. Compared to single-arm robots, dual-arm robots have a larger workspace and stronger load capacity. Coordinated motion planning of multi-arm robots is a problem that must be solved in the process of robot development. This paper proposes an obstacle avoidance path planning method for the dual-arm robot based on the goal probability bias and cost function in a rapidly-exploring random tree algorithm (GA_RRT). The random tree grows to the goal point with a certain probability. At the same time, the cost function is calculated when the random state is generated. The point with the lowest cost is selected as the child node. This reduces the randomness and blindness of the RRT algorithm in the expansion process. The detection algorithm of the bounding sphere is used in the process of collision detection of two arms. The main arm conducts obstacle avoidance path planning for static obstacles. The slave arm not only considers static obstacles, but also takes on the role of the main arm at each moment as a dynamic obstacle for path planning. Finally, MATLAB is used for algorithm simulation, which proves the effectiveness of the algorithm for obstacle avoidance path planning problems for the dual-arm robot.

Abstract:In unstructured environments, picking robots could collide with branches, thus reducing the success rate of picking. In this study, collision-free motion planning is performed in two steps based on the binocular stereo vision information of the environment. First, according to the 3D information collected in the stereo vision environment, the improved adaptive weight particle swarm optimization (APSO) algorithm is adopted to solve the inverse kinematics problem of robots and obtain the collision-free picking posture. Second, to address the limitations of the Bi-RRT algorithm in a high-dimensional environment, such as randomness and slow convergence speed, the target gravity concept and adaptive coefficient adjustment method are introduced to the Bi-RRT algorithm, which is called the AtBi-RRT algorithm. The AtBi-RRT algorithm is used to determine the collision-free path of the robot. Simulation results indicate that the APSO algorithm can swiftly obtain the proper collision-free picking posture, and the average path-determination time of the AtBi-RRT algorithm is 4.24 s. The success rate of path determination is 100% for the laboratory’s picking scene. Experimental results verify that the proposed collision-free motion-planning method allows the picking robot to avoid obstacles in the workspace and efficiently complete the picking task.

Rrt-Gd: An Efficient Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree Approach With Goal Directionality For Redundant Manipulator Path Planning

Abstract:Rapidly-exploring random trees (RRT) method performs well for obstacle-avoiding motion planning. However, it is not fast enough and less goal-direction. In this paper, we propose an effective rapidly-exploring random trees method with goal directionality (RRT-GD) for redundant manipulator path planning. The presented RRT-GD model concentrates both on the status of the end actuator and on the movements of the joints that the Newton-Raphson method is employed for inverse kinematics. In order to speed up the path planning, the path searching algorithm is modified to be goal-directionality and the quintic polynomial is applied to smooth the planned path. In the experiments, it shows that RRT-GD tends to be 10 or more times faster than the usual RRT algorithm when doing the same obstacle-avoiding path planning task. Therefore, RRT-GD could be more efficient and useful in doing our daily works.

Abstract:RRT (rapidly exploring random tree) is a sampling-based planning algorithm that has been widely used due to its simple structure and fast speed. However, the RRT algorithm has several issues such as low planning efficiency, high randomness, and poor path quality. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel method, the adjustable probability and sampling area and the Dijkstra optimization-based RRT algorithm (APSD-RRT), which consists of the following two modules: an APS-RRT planner and an optimizer. The APS-RRT planner can reach a feasible path quickly using the proposed adjustable probability and sampling area strategies, while the optimizer applies the Dijkstra algorithm to prune and improve the initial path generated by the APS-RRT planner and smooths-out sharp nodes based on the interpolation method. A series of experiments are conducted to demonstrate that our method can perform much better in terms of the balance between the computing cost and performance.

Abstract:The Adaptive Step RRT* (AS-RRT*) path planning algorithm for tea-picking robotic arms was proposed as a solution to the autonomy, safety, and efficiency problems inherent to tea-picking robots in tea plantations. The algorithm employs an accumulator-based sampling point selection strategy to enhance the efficiency of path planning and the quality of the resulting path. It combines fast connectivity and pruning optimization methods to identify collision-free paths in a shorter time and to reduce the computational burden. It also incorporates a dynamic step length adjustment mechanism following collision detection, ensuring that the robot arm can avoid obstacles in real time. Furthermore, the generated paths were optimized through the introduction of redundant node removal and curve smoothing techniques. In the robotic arm motion planning experiments, the depth vision sensor was employed to obtain three-dimensional information within the tea plantation as the data source. The experimental results demonstrate that the AS-RRT* algorithm reduces the path length by 14.18% and the path planning time is less than 1 s, indicating that the proposed method enhances the efficiency of path planning and obstacle avoidance performance of the tea-picking robot arm.

Abstract:This paper proposes a task decomposition and dedicated reward-system-based reinforcement learning algorithm for the Pick-and-Place task, which is one of the high-level tasks of robot manipulators. The proposed method decomposes the Pick-and-Place task into three subtasks: two reaching tasks and one grasping task. One of the two reaching tasks is approaching the object, and the other is reaching the place position. These two reaching tasks are carried out using each optimal policy of the agents which are trained using Soft Actor-Critic (SAC). Different from the two reaching tasks, the grasping is implemented via simple logic which is easily designable but may result in improper gripping. To assist the grasping task properly, a dedicated reward system for approaching the object is designed through using individual axis-based weights. To verify the validity of the proposed method, wecarry out various experiments in the MuJoCo physics engine with the Robosuite framework. According to the simulation results of four trials, the robot manipulator picked up and released the object in the goal position with an average success rate of 93.2%.

Abstract:Objectives . The work analyzes features of one of the most promising approaches to solve the problems for motion planning of autonomous robotic manipulators of various types and purposes using the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) method. The development of modern robotics is shown to be inextricably linked with the improvement of the designs of the created samples, for which the placement of a manipulator on platform becomes a typical layout option. Prospects for using the RRT method as a constructive basis for creating a universal motion planner are evaluated for mobile and robotic manipulators, including autonomous robotic systems with a manipulator on a moving platform. Methods . The object of the research is the RRT method and its well-known modifications RRT* and RRT-Connect. The effectiveness of applying such methods for solving problems associated with planning the motions of robotic manipulators of various types was evaluated using computer and natural simulation methods. Results . Based on a review of the literature and the results of the research, the wide possibilities of the RRT method can be used for solving motion planning problems not only for mobile and robotic manipulators, but also for robotic systems on whose transport platform an onboard manipulator has been installed (including those having a redundant or reconfigurable structure). The effectiveness of the applied application of the RRT method is confirmed by examples of modeling a mobile platform with an onboard manipulator and the results of full-scale experiments with a prototype of the ARAKS reconfigurable mechatronic-modular robotic manipulators (RTU MIREA, Russia). It can be experimentally demonstrated and theoretically substantiated that the final dimension of the exploring tree, and hence the time of its construction up to reaching a given target state, is largely determined by the value of the growth factor. Conclusions . The generalization of the results obtained opens up real prospects for using the RRT method as a constructive basis not only for creating universal means for motion planning mobile robotic systems with an onboard manipulator, but also for solving the problems of automating the docking of autonomous mobile platforms.

Abstract:For multi-dimensional high-order nonlinear systems with unstable path quality in parameter and extension terms, we developed a new fast search random tree strategy. First, we established a high-order Lipschitz vector field dynamic system to adapt to high-order systems of multi-degree-of-freedom robots, with the complex obstacle function being one of its key components. Secondly, we designed a classification gap filtering network layer (Classification LSTM) to screen training data models and ensure the global stability of data in path design. Additionally, the visual sensors deployed in the unit area effectively implement the path marking backtracking strategy and dead zone path simplification. Finally, three examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of this design method.

Integrating Active Sensing and Rearrangement Planning for Efficient Object Retrieval from Unknown, Confined, Cluttered Environments

Abstract:Retrieving target objects from unknown, confined spaces remains a challenging task that requires integrated, task-driven active sensing and rearrangement planning. Previous approaches have independently addressed active sensing and rearrangement planning, limiting their practicality in real-world scenarios. This paper presents a new, integrated heuristic-based active sensing and Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS)-based retrieval planning approach. These components provide feedback to one another to actively sense critical, unobserved areas suitable for the retrieval planner to plan a sequence for relocating path-blocking obstacles and a collision-free trajectory for retrieving the target object. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using a robot arm equipped with an in-hand camera in both simulated and real-world confined, cluttered scenarios. Our framework is compared against various state-of-the-art methods. The results indicate that our proposed approach outperforms baseline methods by a significant margin in terms of the success rate, the object rearrangement planning time consumption and the number of planning trials before successfully retrieving the target. MRRT: Multiple Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees for Fast Online Replanning in Dynamic Environments

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm, called MRRT, which uses multiple rapidly-exploring random trees for fast online replanning of autonomous vehicles in dynamic environments with moving obstacles. The proposed algorithm is built upon the RRT algorithm with a multi-tree structure. At the beginning, the RRT algorithm is applied to find the initial solution based on partial knowledge of the environment. Then, the robot starts to execute this path. At each iteration, the new obstacle configurations are collected by the robot's sensor and used to replan the path. This new information can come from unknown static obstacles (e.g., seafloor layout) as well as moving obstacles. Then, to accommodate the environmental changes, two procedures are adopted: 1) edge pruning, and 2) tree regrowing. Specifically, the edge pruning procedure checks the collision status through the tree and only removes the invalid edges while maintaining the tree structure of already-explored regions. Due to removal of invalid edges, the tree could be broken into multiple disjoint trees. As such, the RRT algorithm is applied to regrow the trees. Specifically, a sample is created randomly and joined to all the disjoint trees in its local neighborhood by connecting to the nearest nodes. Finally, a new solution is found for the robot. The advantages of the proposed MRRT algorithm are as follows: i) retains the maximal tree structure by only pruning the edges which collide with the obstacles, ii) guarantees probabilistic completeness, and iii) is computational efficient for fast replanning since all disjoint trees are maintained for future connections and expanded simultaneously.
