Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the optimal choice of traditional Chinese exercise (TCE) for improving bone mineral density in postmenopausal women through a network meta-analysis. Methods: The Chinese and English databases were searched, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP, PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. The outcomes included BMD of lumbar L2-L4, femoral neck, ward triangle, and greater trochanter. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the correlation between each group of interventions, and surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) was used to rank the best interventions. Results: A total of 20 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including 1933 subjects and six interventions: [Tai Chi (TC), Baduanjin (BDJ), Wuqinxi (WQX), Yijinjing (YJJ), TA (Tai chi plus calcium supplementation), BA (Baduanjin plus calcium supplementation)] and three control measures: [Calcium supplementation (CA), Aerobic exercise (AE), Not exercise intervention (NEI)] were analyzed. Regarding BMD of lumbar L2-L4: TC [SMD = 0.99 (0.62, 1.37)], BDJ [SMD = 2.12 (1.39, 2.85)], TA [SMD = 1.12(0.17, 2.07)], BA [SMD = 2.24 (1.16, 3.31)] were superior in increasing BMD of lumbar L2-L4 relative to NEI. Regarding BMD of femoral neck: TC [SMD = 1.24 (0.70, 1.78)], BA [SMD = 3.77 (1.98, 5.56)] were superior in increasing BMD of femoral neck relative to NEI. Regarding BMD of ward's triangle: TC [SMD = 1.63 (1.09, 2.17)] was superior in increasing BMD of ward's triangle relative to NEI. Regarding BMD of greater trochanter: TC [SMD = 0.98 (0.28, 1.68)] were superior in increasing BMD of greater trochanter relative to NEI. TC topped the SUCRA with BMD of lumbar L2-L4: 53.8, femoral neck: 74.9, ward's triangle: 86.9 and greater trochanter: 77.7. Conclusion: Four TCE (TC, BDJ, TA and BA) are all effective in partially improving BMD indicators in postmenopausal women, while TC was effective on all four BMD indicators, which seems to be recommended as the most suitable exercise modality for postmenopausal women. Systematic review registration: This research follows the PRISMA Network statement. Effect of traditional Chinese fitness exercises on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women: a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:We aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of five traditional Chinese fitness exercises (Baduanjin, Taijiquan, Wuqinxi, Yijinjing, and Liuzijue), as well as their efficacy when combined with drug therapy, in the treatment of decreased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Methods: This study strictly followed the evaluation guidelines of PRISMA and followed the "PICOS" principle outlined in the Cochrane Handbook. We performed a systematic search on Web of Science, Springer Link, Scopus, EMBASE, EBSCO, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, CBMdisc, and the VIP Database, and we targeted RCTs studying the effect of TCE on BMD in postmenopausal women published prior to September 2023. The quality of the literature and the risk of bias of the included studies were assessed according to ROB2 and GRADE criteria, and data analysis was performed using Stata 14. Results: A total of 33 RCTs (3658 post-menopausal women) were included. Network meta-analysis showed that Taiji (SMD=0.72, 95% CI: 0.22, 1.21, P<0.01) and Yijinjing (SMD=0.51, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.99, P<0.05) were significantly superior to conventional rehabilitation in lumbar BMD. In terms of improvement of femoral neck BMD, Baduanjin (SMD=1.63, 95% CI: -3.58, 6.85, P<0.001) and Taiji (SMD=0.46, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.79, P<0.05) had statistically different outcomes to conventional rehabilitation. Regarding Ward's triangle BMD, Taiji (SMD= 0.32, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.50, P< 0.05) had statistically different outcomes to conventional rehabilitation. The results of the SUCRA probability ranking showed that Baduanjin + drug interventions achieved the most significant improvement in lumbar BMD (SUCRA=83.6%) and femoral neck BMD (SUCRA=90.2%). Taiji + drug interventions most effectively improved Ward's triangle BMD (SUCRA=86.0%). In terms of traditional Chinese fitness exercises alone, Taiji was the most effective in improving lumbar BMD (SUCRA=64.4%) and Ward's triangle BMD (SUCRA=46.8%), and Baduanjin was the most effective in treating femoral neck BMD (SUCRA=89.9%). Conclusion: Traditional Chinese fitness exercises can significantly improve the BMD levels of postmenopausal women. Taiji, Yijinjing, and Baduanjin combined with medication showed better intervention effects overall. However, due to the limitations of the number of studies and sample sizes of individual interventions, definitive conclusions need to be verified by more high-quality studies.
Effect of Tai Chi exercise on bone health and fall prevention in postmenopausal women: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: The bone status of postmenopausal women is worsening. In fact, postmenopausal period is the high incidence stage of osteoporosis and falls. Notably, a recent study has pointed out that exercise can improve bone health in postmenopausal women. However, the effect of Tai Chi exercise on postmenopausal women is controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was designed to analyze the effect of Tai Chi exercise on bone health and fall prevention in postmenopausal women. Methods: The researches on Tai Chi improving the bone health of postmenopausal women before August 31, 2023 were collected from Chinese and English databases, such as PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, etc. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. Besides, R software 4.3.1 was employed to analyze the effect sizes in the meta-analysis to summarize the impact of Tai Chi on vertebral bone mineral density, serum calcium, clinical balance scores, the number of falls, total falls, and health status scores in postmenopausal women. Results: There were 12 studies eventually included in this meta-analysis. A total of 1,272 postmenopausal women were involved, including 628 in the experimental group (intervention with Tai Chi exercise) and 644 in the control group (without any intervention). Briefly, postmenopausal women practicing Tai Chi presented a significant increase in vertebral bone density [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.37, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.04-0.71), P = 0.03] and health status score [SMD = 0.25, 95% CI (0.01-0.49), P = 0.04]. In contrast, there were no significant differences for postmenopausal women between the two groups in terms of serum calcium [SMD = -0.01, 95% CI (-0.39, 0.36), P = 0.77], clinical balance [SMD = 0.17, 95% CI (-0.01, 0.46), P = 0.23], number of falls [SMD = -0.61, 95% CI (-1.24, 0.02), P = 0.06] and total falls [odds ratio = 0.35, 95% CI (0.11-1.12), P = 0.07]. Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise can improve the bone mineral density of postmenopausal women, thereby maintaining bone health. Hence, Tai Chi exercise is necessary to prevent osteoporosis.
The Effect of Taichi Practice on Attenuating Bone Mineral Density Loss: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of practicing Taichi on attenuating bone mineral density (BMD) loss. Methods: Both electronic and manual searches were performed for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining Taichi for bone health. Two review authors independently performed study selection and data extraction according to inclusion criteria. A third party (Lin Luo) emerged to discuss with the two review authors and resolve a disagreement. Results: Twenty RCTs were found to meet the inclusion criteria and used for meta-analysis with a total effective sample of 1604. The aggregated results from this systematic review have shown significant benefits in favour of Taichi on BMD at lumbar spine (Standard Mean Difference, SMD) = 0.29; 95% CI 0.15 to 0.43; p < 0.0001), femur neck (SMD = 0.56; 95% CI 0.38 to 0.75; p < 0.00001), femur trochanter (SMD = 0.04; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.07; p = 0.007), total hip BMD (SMD = 0.46; 95% CI 0.16 to 0.76; p = 0.003). Conclusions: The aggregated results from this systematic review suggests that Taichi is effective on attenuating BMD loss at the regions of lumbar spine and proximal femur neck in special populations (e.g., older adults, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, people with osteoarthritis, and cancer survivors). Researchers should further examine the effect of Taichi on the proximal femur trochanter and total hip so that a more definitive claim can be made regarding the beneficial effects for attenuating BMD loss in these musculoskeletal regions.

Abstract:Background: There is a lack of information on whether the positive effect of Tai Chi (TC) and brisk walking (BW) exercise on bone mineral density (BMD) in perimenopausal women remains after exercise cessation. To compare the effects of regular TC and BW exercise on BMD in perimenopausal women and to analyze the maintenance effects after exercise cessation. Methods: The TC and BW groups performed 48 weeks of exercise. The BMD of the lumbar spine and dominant-side proximal femur was measured in all subjects at weeks 0, 48, 52, and 56. Results: Compared with baseline, the BMD of the lumbar spine (L 2−4 ) at week 48 increased by 5.05% ( P = 0.031) in the TC group, and the BMD of the femoral neck at week 48 increased by 8.23% ( P = 0.031) in the BW group. At 4 and 8 weeks after exercise cessation, the BMD of L 2−4 in the TC group was still increased by 5.05% ( P = 0.041) and 5.05% ( P = 0.023), respectively, and the BMD of the femoral neck was still increased by 8.23% ( P = 0.018) and 9.41% ( P = 0.007), respectively, in the BW group. Conclusion: Forty-eight weeks of TC exercise significantly increases the BMD of L 2−4 in perimenopausal women, and BW exercise significantly increases the BMD of the femoral neck; these effects are maintained at 4 and 8 weeks after exercise cessation. These results suggest that these two exercises reduce the BMD decrease caused by aging.

Role of H2O in subduction-zone magmatism: New insights from melt inclusions in high-Mg basalts from central Mexico

Abstract:Although there is a growing body of data on H 2 O in arc magmas, there is still considerable uncertainty about the relationship between H 2 O and various incompatible elements during enrichment of the mantle wedge by subduction processes. We report data for H 2 O, other volatiles (CO 2 , S, Cl), and trace elements in olivine-hosted melt inclusions from high-Mg basalts in central Mexico that exhibit varying degrees of subduction-related enrichment. Most melt inclusions were trapped at low pressure, but rare inclusions (Mg# 65-78, olivine hosts Fo 8 5 - 9 0 ) trapped at upper to middle crustal pressures (1-6 kbar) contain high CO 2 (250-2120 ppm). The high-pressure inclusions indicate magmatic H 2 O contents from 1.3 to 5.2 wt%. Enrichment of H 2 O relative to Nb correlates positively with K/Nb, Ba/Nb, and La/Nb, indicating a clear link between H 2 O) and trace element enrichment of the mantle wedge. Our results show that fluxing of the wedge with an H 2 O-rich component from the subducted slab is important in formation of magmas that are enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) and light rare earth (LREE) elements relative to high field strength elements (HFSE). In contrast, magmas with low LILEs and LREEs relative to HFSEs have relatively low H 2 O, and must have formed largely by decompression melting of unmodified mantle. Our data for volcanoes <50 km apart show evidence of significant variability in the composition of H 2 O-rich subduction components that are added to the mantle wedge beneath central Mexico.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) is suggested to have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the evidence of the effect of TCC on bone mineral density (BMD) and its potential for prevention of osteoporosis.METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to January 2017. Randomized controlled studies, case-control trials, prospective cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies which evaluated the effect of TCC on BMD were selected without any subject or language restriction.RESULTS: Nine articles met the inclusion criteria, including seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one case-control trial (CCT), and one cross-sectional study, encompassing a total of 1222 participants. Five studies showed statistically significant improvements in BMD after TCC, three studies showed nonsignificant intergroup differences, and one study provided no statistical evaluation of results. The studies with nonsignificant results tended to have a shorter total duration of TCC practice. Apart from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), two studies additionally used peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) which showed statistically significant positive effects of TCC on preventing osteoporosis.CONCLUSION: TCC is beneficial to BMD and may be a cost-effective and preventive measure of osteoporosis. This beneficial effect is better observed in long-term TCC practice.THE TRANSLATIONAL POTENTIAL OF THIS ARTICLE: The beneficial effect of TCC on BMD is suggested to be clinically translated to its potential for early rehabilitation and prevention of secondary osteoporosis in patients after surgical treatment of common osteoporotic fractures. The length of practicing TCC, the form and style of TCC, and the types of patient suitable for TCC are to be investigated in future studies.

Comparative efficacy different resistance training protocols on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: To systematically review the effects of different resistance training (RT) protocols on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the resistance training in improving bone mineral density for postmenopausal women were searched in databases including ProQuest, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. The retrieval time range was from the establishment of the database to May 2022. The included literature was independently screened and relevant data was extracted by two reviewers. The systematic review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for reviews of quantitative evidence. Quality of risk was assessed using the Physical Therapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale, risk of bias was assessedusing the Cochrane RoB2 tool and a network Meta-analysis was performed on the data using Stata 16.0. Results: A total of 19 studies, which included 919 subjects, were eventually acquired. The results of the network Meta-analysis showed that moderate intensity resistance training was superior in improving lumbar spine bone mineral density (LS BMD) and femoral neck bone mineral density (FN BMD) compared to the control group (as per usual daily life), with a statistically significant difference ( p < 0.05). There was, however, no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of increasing total hip bone mineral density (TH BMD) and trochanter bone mineral density (Troch BMD), although moderate intensity training tends to increase bone mineral density ( p > 0.05). In addition, when training frequency is taken into consideration, 3 days/week of moderate intensity training (3MI) was superior to 2 days/week (2MI) in improving lumbar spine bone mineral density , and moderate intensity training was superior to low and high intensity resistance trainings at training frequency of 3 day/week, with statistically significant differences ( p < 0.05). The cumulative probability ranking results indicated that 3MI was the optimal option in improving lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip and Troch bone mineral density. Subgroup analyses combining interventions time showed that for lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density, 3MI protocol with intervention duration within 1 year (≤48 weeks) had a significant advantage over other interventions, while this advantage was no longer significant with the intervention duration of more than 1 year (>48 weeks). Conclusion: Current evidence shows that moderate intensity resistance training for 3 days/week can be preferred clinically to improve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, and it is recommended that the duration of the same training should not exceed 1 year. Nevertheless, more high-quality studies are needed to verify the above conclusion.

Abstract:Background Perimenopause is associated with a decline in estrogen levels, leading to decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and altered bone metabolism, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Tai Chi Rouli Ball, a traditional Chinese sport, is thought to have beneficial effects on physical health, but its impact on bone health in perimenopausal women is not well understood. Methods This study involved a randomized controlled trial with 52 perimenopausal women aged 45–55 years from community senior centers. Participants were divided into two groups: the Tai Chi Rouli Ball group and the control group. Baseline assessments of bone density, bone mineral content (BMC), and bone metabolism markers, including estrogen levels, were conducted. The Tai Chi Rouli Ball group underwent regular training for a specific period, while the control group did not receive any intervention. Post-experiment assessments were then compared to the baseline. Results Post-intervention, the Tai Chi Rouli Ball group showed a significant increase in spine bone density and BMC in various body parts, including the whole body, trunk/torso, and spine, compared to the control group. Bone metabolism indicators also improved, with increased levels of estrogen and a decrease in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Calcium levels showed a significant increase, while other markers like alkaline phosphatase (ALP), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) had non-significant changes. Conclusions Tai Chi Rouli Ball exercise may positively influence bone health by improving bone density, BMC, and altering bone metabolism markers in perimenopausal women. These findings suggest that Tai Chi Rouli Ball could be a viable non-pharmacological approach to prevent osteoporosis in this demographic.

Abstract:Objective Tai Chi (TC) is a complementary therapy for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Although systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (Mas) of efficacy studies have been published, the results remain uncertain, and their quality has not yet been fully evaluated. Here, we summarize the existing SRs/Mas, evaluate their quality and level of evidence, and provide a reference for the effectiveness of TC. Methods SRs/Mas of TC therapy for KOA published before February 2023 were retrieved from eight databases in Chinese and English. The Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020, and the Risk of Bias in Systematic (ROBIS) scale were used to assess methodological quality, reporting quality, and risk of bias. Results Seven SRs/Mas were finally included. One was deemed high quality by AMASTAR-2, while the rest were of critically low quality. In the PRISMA2020 assessment, the response rate of "Yes" for Q7, Q15, Q22, Q24, and Q27 was less than 50%. In the ROBIS assessment, three reports in Phase 3 were high risk and four were low risk. In the efficacy assessment, TC has shown varying degrees of improvement in physical function, pain, stiffness, 6-minute walk test, mental quality of life, TUG, and balance in patients with KOA. Conclusion TC effectively treats KOA-associated pain, stiffness, body function, and mental quality of life. However, the low methodological quality of the studies and the high risk of migration reduced their reliability. Therefore, these conclusions should be taken with caution. High-quality, large-sample research is needed to provide stronger and more scientific evidence.

Abstract:Background. Tai chi (TC) has received increased attention in stroke rehabilitation, yet services are greatly underutilized. An increasing number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) have begun to investigate the effects of TC on balance function in stroke patients. The aim of this current study was to systematically collate, appraise, and synthesize the results of these SRs/MAs using a systematic overview. Methods. Eight databases were searched: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, SinoMed, Chongqing VIP, and Wanfang Data. SRs/MAs of TC on balance function in stroke patients were included. Literature selection, data extraction, and assessment of the review quality were performed by two independent reviewers. Methodological quality was assessed by the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), reporting quality by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), and evidence quality by Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Results. Nine SRs/MAs were included in this study. For methodological quality, what resulted in unsatisfactory methodological quality was noncompliance with critical item 4 (using a comprehensive literature search strategy) and critical item 7 (providing the list of excluded research literature). For reporting quality, what resulted in unsatisfactory reporting quality was inadequate reporting of Q1 (protocol and registration), Q8 (search), Q15 (risk of bias across studies), Q16 (additional analyses), Q22 (risk of bias across studies), Q23 (additional analysis), and Q27 (funding). For GRADE, the evidence quality was high in 0, moderate in 3, low in 11, and very low in 6. Risk of bias was the most common factor leading to downgrading of evidence, followed by inconsistency, imprecision, publication bias, and indirectness. Conclusions. TC may have beneficial effects on balance function in stroke survivors; however, this finding is limited by the generally low methodology, reporting quality, and evidence quality for published SRs/MAs.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA), a leading issue nowadays, is becoming one of the most common degenerative joint disorders in the worldwide as the sharp increase of aging population. It remained unclear whether Tai Chi was effective for posture control improvements in aged populations with knee osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of Tai Chi on improving balance function and posture control in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis by updating the latest trial evidence. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, PEDro and Cochrane library were searched up to October 1st, 2020 to identify RCTs evaluating Tai Chi for improving balance function and posture control in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. The primary outcomes were 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) and time up and go test (TUG), The secondary outcome was ‘Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index’ (WOMAC) Physical Function Score. This meta-analysis was performed with RevMan Version 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 603 participants with knee osteoarthritis in the 11 RCTs were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that: The Tai Chi group was associated with better performance in 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) , time up and go test (TUG) and WOMAC Physical Function Score than the control group [(MD: 46.67, 95% CI 36.91 to 56.43,P < 0.001)], [(MD: -0.89, 95% CI -1.16 to -0.61, P < 0.001)], [(MD: -11.28, 95% CI -13.33to -9.24, P < 0.001)]. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis provides evidence from 11 RCTs that Tai Chi could be an excellent physical training strategy for improving posture control ability in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Assuming that Tai Chi is at least effective and safe in most areas, it could be used as an adjuvant and reliable training method for balance upgrading and postural control improvements for older patients with knee osteoarthritis. Effect of Tai Chi Exercise on Blood Lipid Profiles: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:Studies have demonstrated that Tai Chi exercise improves blood lipid level with inconsistent results. A meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the effects of Tai Chi on blood lipid profiles in humans.We screened the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library (Central), Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang data, and Clinicaltrials.gov for randomized controlled trials with Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) score more than 3 points up to June 2015. Six studies involving 445 subjects were included. Most trials applied 12-week Tai Chi intervention courses.In comparison with the control group, blood triglyceride (TG) level difference between follow-up and baseline was statistically significantly lower in the Tai Chi practicing group (weighted mean difference (WMD) -16.81 mg/dl; 95% confidence intervals (CI) -31.27 to -2.35 mg/dl; P=0.02). A trend to improving total cholesterol (TC) reduction was found with Tai Chi (WMD -7.96 mg/dl; 95% CI -17.30 to 1.39 mg/dl; P=0.10). However, no difference was found in blood low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).Tai Chi exercise lowered blood TG level with a trend to decrease blood TC level. Our data suggest that Tai Chi has the potential to implement meaningful blood lipid modification and serve as an adjunctive exercise modality. The relationship between Tai Chi exercise regimen and lipid profile change might have a scientific priority for future investigation.

Abstract:Solanum glaucophyllum (Sg) (synonym S. malacoxylon) is a plant toxic to cattle due to its high levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 as glycoside derivatives. Sg causes a disease characterized by wasting and calcification of soft tissues. The effects of vitamin D are not only important in calcium homeostasis, but also in immune regulation, cell growth and cell differentiation. Skin samples in Sg-intoxicated and control heifers were studied histologically. Cellular differentiation and proliferation were analysed by immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratins, involucrin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The results were obtained by image processing and analysis and were statistically evaluated. Sg-intoxicated cattle showed atrophy of epidermis and severe involution of hair follicles and of sebaceous and sweat glands. As judged by PCNA expression, cellular proliferation was reduced, even though the reduction was not statistically significant. The analysed markers of differentiation, e.g. involucrin and cytokeratins 10 and 11, changed in relation to Sg-poisoning. The possible pathogenesis of the skin lesions is discussed.

Abstract:Background: Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) may have a positive impact on physical and psychological well-being in breast cancer patients, but the evidence remains limited and inconclusive. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of TCC on the quality of life (QoL) and psychological symptoms in women patients with breast cancer. Methods: This review has been registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42019141977). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCC for breast cancer were searched from eight major English and Chinese databases. All trials included were analyzed in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook. The primary outcomes were QoL, anxiety, and depression in patients with breast cancer. Fatigue, sleep quality, cognitive function, and inflammatory cytokine were the secondary outcomes. Results: Fifteen RCTs involving a total of 1,156 breast cancer participants were included in this review. The methodological quality of included trials was generally poor. The pooled results suggested that TCC-based exercise could significantly improve QoL [standardized mean difference (SMD)=0.35, 95%CI: 0.15-0.55, I 2 = 0, model: fixed, IV], anxiety [weighted mean difference (WMD)=-4.25, 95%CI: -5.88 to -2.63, I 2 = 0, model: fixed, IV], and fatigue (SMD=-0.87, 95%CI: -1.50 to -0.24, I 2 = 80.9%, model: random, DL) compared other controls, with moderate to low certainty of evidence. The improvement of QoL and fatigue by TCC was also clinically meaningful. However, TCC-based exercise failed to show any between-group differences in depression, sleep quality, cognitive function, and inflammatory cytokine. Post-hoc analysis revealed that TCC-based exercise outperformed the other exercise in improving shoulder function with very low certainty of evidence. Conclusion: Our findings manifested that TCC-based exercise is helpful for improving the QoL, anxiety, and fatigue in patients with breast cancer within the range of comparisons covered in this study. However, the results must be treated with great caution because of the methodological flaws of included trials. Larger, well-designed, and conducted randomized controlled trials with longer follow-up is warranted in the future to evaluate the important outcomes of TCC for breast cancer. Abstract:Background: Previous research has indicated that tai chi exercise can effectively enhance balance performance in patients; however, its impact on healthy individuals remains uncertain. Therefore, this meta-analysis aims to investigate the effects of different intensities and styles of tai chi exercise on the balance performance of healthy older adult individuals. Methods: A targeted search method was employed to identify studies investigating the impact of tai chi exercise on balance in older adults across a range of databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Central, EBSCO, CHKI, and Embase. The studies were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA and PERSiST guidelines, and two independent reviewers were responsible for the search, screening of results, extraction of data, and assessment of study quality. A random-effects model was employed to calculate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: 2000 participants who met inclusion criteria were included in analyses across 28 trials. The findings indicated that tai chi can enhance the balance performance of healthy older adults, as demonstrated by the Timed Up and Go test (WMD = −1.04, 95% CI: −1.36 to-0.72, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 71%), functional Reach test (FR) (WMD = 2.81, 95% CI: 1.60 to 4.02, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 56%), and Berg Balance Scale (WMD = 2.55, 95% CI: 1.19 to 3.91, p = 0.0002, I 2 = 88%), as well as other balance tests such as SLS (WMD = 5.03, 95% CI: 3.08 to 6.97, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 85), and GS (WMD = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.12, p < 0.00001, I 2 = 54%). Subgroup analyses showed that tai chi exercise for both ≤12 and > 12 weeks was statistically significant (< 0.01, respectively) for balance performance in healthy older adults, especially for tai chi exercise performed more than twice a week (WMD = −1.03, 95% CI: −1.35 to −0.72, p < 0.00001) and for more than 45 min each time (WMD = −1.11, 95% CI: −1.58 to-0.63, p < 0.00001) tai chi exercise had greater benefits on TUG time, FR distance and BBS in healthy older adults. In addition, compared to Sun-style tai chi, Yang-style tai chi was more effective. Conclusion: The tai chi exercise positively affects the balance performances of healthy older adults. Engaging in short-term (≤12 weeks) exercise for more than two 45-min sessions per week has been found to produce more pronounced effects.
