Abstract:The inhibition of volatile fatty acid (VFA) production is an important factor affecting biogas (methane) production in the anaerobic co-digestion systems comprising food waste and sewage sludge. In this study, batch experiments were conducted at medium temperature (36 ± 0.5 °C), during which the biogas production index and material–liquid characteristic parameters of the anaerobic digestion systems containing different concentrations of iron-loaded biochar (Fe-BC) were monitored. The cumulative biogas production data were analyzed using a modified Gompertz kinetic model to determine the effect of the Fe-BC on biogas production in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Studies have shown that addition of Fe-BC does not significantly influence the hydrolysis and acidification stages of anaerobic co-digestion, but does have a significant effect on promoting methanogenesis by alleviating the accumulation of VFAs and improving both the buffer capacity of the system and the efficiency of substrate-to-biogas conversion. When the Fe-BC concentration was 16 g·L−1, the cumulative biogas production reached 329.42 mL·g-VS−1, which was 49.7% higher than the blank group, and the lag period was 3.55 d, which was 42% shorter than the blank group. Mechanistic studies have shown that Fe-BC increased the concentration of coenzyme F420 and the conductivity of the digestate in the co-digestion system, which increased the activity of methanogens in the anaerobic digestion system, thereby promoting methanogenesis.

Abstract:High-solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) of kitchen waste was generally faced to the common problems such as systemic acidification, prolonged lag-phase time and low methane production. Iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (ICME) materials exhibited advantages that porous structure, large specific surface area and excellent conductivity. It was beneficial for organic compounds to hydrolysis. Moreover, ICME materials could establish direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) pathway between bacteria and methanogens. ICME materials were commonly used to enhance the AD of wastewater, but they were rarely applied to HSAD of kitchen waste. In this study, ICME materials were utilized to enhance HSAD of kitchen waste at different solid content conditions. The results showed that the highest cumulative biogas yield (705.23 mL/g VS) was obtained in the experimental group (TS = 10%), which was 94.15% higher than that of the control group. At the same time, the addiction of ICME could shorten lag-phase time. Electrochemical characteristics and XPS analysis showed that ICME materials promoted the release of Fe2+ in the AD system and acceleration of direct interspecies electron transfer between microorganisms. Microbial community analysis showed that ICME materials enriched electroactive bacteria (Proteiniphilum), Methanosarcina, Methanobrevibacter and Methanofollis. Functional gene prediction revealed that ICME materials increased the relative abundance of carbohydrate transport and metabolism and coenzyme transport and metabolism. It provided a potential measure to treat kitchen waste.
Iron-carbon Micro-Electrolysis Material Enhanced High-Solid Anaerobic Digestion: Performance and Microbial Mechanism

Abstract:Iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (ICME) materials are widely used as composite conductive materials for wastewater treatment to promote the degradation of volatile solids (VS), but there is virtually no research on their effect on high-solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD). This study aimed to investigate the effect of 10-50 g/L ICME dosages on HSAD and to reveal the microbial enhancement mechanism. The batch experiments (working volume of 400 mL) were conducted in a constant temperature water bath shaker. The results showed that the ICME materials promoted methane production by HSAD. The highest methane production rate was 297.79 mL/ g VS at a dosage of 50 g/L, which was 28% higher than that of the control. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the ICME materials increased the attachment area of microorganisms. Further analyses of microbial community indicated that ICME materials facilitate symbiotic metabolism of syntrophic acetate-oxidizing bacteria (Synergistaceae) and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanospirillum). This potentially promotes the conversion of the acetoacetic methanogenesis pathway to the syntrophic acetate oxidation and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathways. This study revealed ICME material enhancement in HSAD as well as new insights into the microbial mechanisms.
Performance enhancement of integrating microbial electrolysis cell on two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste: Electro-methanogenic stage versus electro-two stages

Abstract:The effects of microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) integration stage on two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) of food waste (FW) were studied via semi-continuous experiments. The results showed that both MEC (with 1.2 V) integrations enhanced the performances of the TSADs, with the enhancement of electro-two stages being higher. The methane production of TSAD increased from 1.36 ± 0.04 L/L/d to 1.53 ± 0.05 L/L/d (electro-methanogenic stage) and 1.54 ± 0.04 L/L/d (electro-two stages) during the steady period. Electro-acidogenesis decreased propionic acid production and enhanced hydrogen production, while electro-methanogenesis promoted the conversion of volatile fatty acids to methane. The MEC integration improved energy recovery from the organic matter in FW by 11.65–16.15% and reduced the mass loss, with those of the electro-two stages being higher and the electro-methanogenic stage being dominant in the electro-two stages. The integration of MEC enhanced anaerobic fermentation by enriching Olsenella, norank_f__ST-12K33 and Proteiniphilum and improved methanogenesis by enriching Methanobacterium and Candidatus_Methanofastidiosum .

Abstract:Although many technologies can be applied to sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW) treatment, high in-vestment and operational costs, high land occupation, and the "not-in-my-backyard" effect pose many challenges in practice. Thus, it is important to develop and utilize low-carbon or negative-carbon technologies to tackle the carbon problem. This paper proposes a method of anaerobic co-digestion of FW and SS, thermally hydrolyzed sludge (THS), or THS filtrate (THF) to enhance their methane potential. Compared to the co-digestion of SS with FW, the methane yield of the co-digestion of THS and FW was 9.7-69.7% higher, and that of the co-digestion of THF and FW was 11.1-101.1% higher. The synergistic effect was weakened with the addition of THS but enhanced with the addition of THF, potentially owing to the change in humic substances. Filtration removed most humic acids (HAs) from THS but retained fulvic acids (FAs) in THF. Moreover, THF produced 71.4% of the methane yield of THS, although only 25% of the organic matter permeated from THS to THF. This indicated that hardly biodegradable substances remained in the dewatering cake and were removed from anaerobic digestion systems. The results indicate that the co-digestion of THF and FW is an effective way to enhance methane production.
Facilitating Solid-State Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste Via Bio-Electrochemical Treatment

Abstract:Food waste has become a global environmental concern over emissions of greenhouse gas and odorous pollutants. Anaerobic digestion is gaining increasing attention as an effective food waste disposal method combining waste minimization and bioenergy recovery. Solid-state anaerobic digestion can handle food waste containing high contents of solids and has the merits of higher disposal volumes and less parasitic energy input, however, the low energy/mass transfer impairs the treatment efficiency. This study incorporated bio-electrochemical treatment into solid-state anaerobic digestion of food waste to overcome these shortcomings for enhanced performances. Food waste liquid leachate was used as feedstock to validate the bio-electrochemical treatment effects under different conditions. At a low applied voltage of 0.7 V and initial pH of 8.13, the methane yield increased by 77.5% while the carbon dioxide yield decreased by 16.0% compared with the control without electrodes. Although higher voltages (1.1-2.0 V) contributed to higher methane and hydrogen yields, the fast consumption and breakages of anodes significantly decreased the treatment consistency and material lifespan. Thereby, 0.7 V was selected as the applied voltage when incorporating the bio-electrochemical unit into the solid-state digester treating food waste. Cathodic hydroxide generation increased the buffering capacity, thus contributing to a more stable start-up process. With an immersed electrode surface area of 25.2 cm2/L, the highest methane yield of 526.7 mL/gVS was recorded with lower carbon dioxide and hydrogen contents initially, and the peak gaseous hydrogen sulfide emission was significantly reduced by 71.5% mainly due to the ferrous ions release from low carbon steel anode for sulfide precipitation.

Abstract:A novel method in straw fermentation.Purity and yield of methane in biogas has significant improvement.Degradation of fiber components has significant improvement.Energy efficiency of MEC system is more than 100%.Low quality and yield of methane severely hindered the industrial application of straw biogas fermentation and there has been no effective solution found so far. In this study, a novel method has been developed to improve the quality and yield of methane during biogas fermentation. We coupled microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with normal anaerobic fermentation to enhance the yield and purity of methane. This novel fermentation process achieved the methane purity of more than 85%, which was critically higher than those of previously published reports. With the stimulation from microorganisms and electric current, the degradation of fiber has been greatly enhanced. The MEC system significantly improves the yield and purity of biogas, bringing a new path to synthesize the methane by the carbon dioxide and hydrogen ions in solution under the electron. Electrochemical index analysis showed the extra methane synthesis which was mainly led by the external circuit electron transfer. The result of the gas chromatograph and solid degradation rate showed that the carbon source of extra methane was CO2 produced in normal fermentation and extra volatile solid degradation. These results show that MEC significantly enhanced the quality and yield of methane in a straw fermentation process, giving insights for normal anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is an effective treatment technology for wastewater. However, long HRT and low CH4 production limit the application of anaerobic treatment. Iron-based materials, carbon-based materials and Fe-C composite particles have been used in anaerobic processes. However, the strengthening effect of Fe-C composite particles on anaerobic systems requires further research. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) was prepared by a co-precipitation method and its morphology was characterized. Different concentrations of GAC-NZVI particles were used in the batch experiment to study the enhancing effect of the anaerobic biological treatment process. The water quality, sludge properties and microbial community were analyzed. The degradation rate of COD and total CH4 production increased by 9.38% and 14.29% with particles at a concentration of 1000 mg/L, respectively. The average methane yield was 169.86 mL CH4/g-COD removed, which was 9.39% higher than that of the control. The measurement results of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), conductivity, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Fe concentration indicated that the composite particles showed excellent electrical conductivity and promoted microorganism metabolism, which accelerated the use of substrates and methane generation. The 3-dimensional excitation (Ex) – emission (Em) matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy of soluble microbial product (SMP) and EPS indicated that the particles could affect the endogenous respiration of microorganisms. Microbial community analysis revealed that the dominant genus Methanothrix (acetoclastic methanogens) increased by 13.32%, which could strengthen acetoclastic methanogenesis and lead to higher CH4 production. The abundance of hydrogenotrophic archaea decreased after the addition of GAC-NZVI. These results provide an alternate method for enhancing anaerobic wastewater treatment using conductive particles.

Self-enhancement of bioenergy recovery from anaerobically digesting WAS with novel iron-based metal-organic framework assistance: Insights into electron transfer and metabolic pathways

Abstract:Inadequate methane production and insufficient hydrolysis-acidification activity impede the practical application of anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS). Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials attains promising capability of controlling proton/electron transfer in AD processes. This study used a typical iron-based MOF and MIL-88A(Fe) to improve the methane production via digesting WAS. These materials were prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method. The findings indicated that the addition of 150 mg MIL-88A(Fe)/g WAS VS resulted in a 57.23% increase in accumulated methane production and a 43.84% increase in daily maximum methane production. The methane production rate (Rmax) also increased from 22.25 to 29.14 mL/g VS/d. The enhanced electron transfer capacity, improved hydrolysis of WAS, boosted acetate generation, and mitigated accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) collectively contributed to the better methane yield in the MIL-88A(Fe)-added system. The significant enrichment of Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta along with the up-regulation of key methanogenesis enzyme-encoding genes jointly suggested that the CO2 reduction and methanogenesis were strengthened. Moreover, MIL-88A(Fe) stimulated the production of c-type cytochrome and e-pili, facilitating direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between norank-f-SC-I-84 and Methanobacterium. This study provided new solutions for improving methane production and offered insights into the mechanism of enhanced methanogenesis of AD in the presence of MIL-88A(Fe).

Abstract:The food waste (FW) digestion performance can be enhanced by introducing iron oxide (IO) into digesters. However, the role of IO in continuous two-stage digesters in enhancing the FW anaerobic digestion remains unclear. In this study, the effect of IO on the bioenergy recovery from a two-stage digestion process was investigated. The bioenergy recovery was significantly increased by up to 208.43 % with IO addition. The activities of dehydrogenase, α-amylase, and protease increase by 0.82-1.44, 7.24-14.56 and 7.97-20.45 times, respectively, as compared with that of the blank. With IO addition, the metabolic pathway in hydrolytic-acidogenic (HA) reactor shifted from lactic acid fermentation to butyric fermentation, which promoted stable methane production in methanogenic (MG) reactor. The activity of coenzyme F420 increased by 19.19-39.01 times, indicating that IO facilitated FW digestion by promoting hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. The enhancement in the enzyme activity was attributable to the Fe2+ generated by dissimilatory iron reduction. According to the microbial analysis, IO enhanced interspecies hydrogen transfer between Methanobacterium and Syntrophomonas. Furthermore, IO improved direct interspecies electron transfer between Geobacter sulfurreducens and Methanosarcina. The effluent recirculation strategy greatly facilitated the hydrolysis and acidification of FW, which was critical for improving the two-stage process performance.
Enhanced anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge by co-application of biochar and nano-Fe3O4

Abstract:Conductive materials have been utilized to facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in anaerobic digestion (AD) to enhance methane production. However, the impact and efficacy of the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe3O4 have not been adequately elucidated, particularly their interaction on electron transfer efficiency. In this investigation, we examined the influence of simultaneously or independently adding biochar and nano-Fe3O4 to food waste (FW) and sewage sludge (SS) anaerobic co-digestion. A synergistic effect was observed under the co-application condition. Methane production reached 300.3 ± 19.8 mL/gCOD with the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe3O4, representing a 43.3%, 35.4%, and 5.4% increase compared to the sole Fe3O4, biochar, and nano-Fe3O4, respectively. Mechanistic analysis revealed that, in comparison to sole biochar and nano-Fe3O4, their co-occurrence significantly accelerated hydrolysis and acidogenesis, thereby enhancing the release of soluble organic components. Furthermore, the application of nano-Fe3O4 improved system stability and significantly promoted propionate degradation, maintaining a favorable condition for methane production. Additionally, the noteworthy increase in INT-ETS activity and cytochrome c concentration indicated that the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe3O4 stimulated electron transfer. Correspondingly, the activity of coenzyme F420, which indicates the performance of methanogenesis, exhibited a 2.44-fold increase compared to the control. This indicated that nano-Fe3O4 and biochar co-amendment can serve as a robust platform to strengthen DIET. This study provided a new insight regarding the application of biochar and nano-Fe3O4 in the AD system for strengthening electron transfer to promote methane production.
Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production from food waste with magnetic biochar via anaerobic fermentation: Linking interfacial, extracellular, and intracellular electron transfer

Abstract:Electron transfer is vital for microbial communities in anaerobic fermentation systems for food waste treatment. Considerable endeavors highlight the importance of interspecific electron transfer between acid-producing bacteria and methanogenic archaea. However, the contribution of electron transfer network from intracellular to extracellular in these microbes with conducive materials is unclear, and deserves more attention. This work demonstrated that magnetic biochar (as a typical conducive material) could enhance interfacial, extracellular and intracellular electron transfer networks during food waste fermentation, resulting in the improved production of short-chain fatty acids, accompanied by synchronous enhancements in solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification steps. Further study revealed that magnetic biochar exhibited large surface area (28.5 m2/g) and high conductivity (97.6 μS/cm) with low charge transfer resistance and high catalytic activity, resulting in enriching acid-forming bacteria associated with electroactivity (e.g., Clostridium, Parabacteroides, and Fonticella). Also, magnetic biochar up-regulated the gene expressions involved in extracellular electron transfer, including membrane proteins (e.g., MtrA and MtrB) and conductive flagella (especially type IV pilus, e.g., PilA, PilB, and PilC), and intracellular electron transfer, particularly in the central pathway TCA cycle (e.g., acnA and sucA). In response to the evident stimulation of electron transfer networks (electron transport system activity increased by 204.1 % compared with the control), the critical gene expressions involved in fatty acid biosynthesis, requiring sufficient electrons and energy, were corresponding up-regulated (e.g., accA, accC, and accD), resulting in the promotion of short-chain fatty acids generation. This work would improve the in-depth understanding of electron transfer impacts on anaerobic systems and provide useful guidance for FW disposal.

Improving CH4 Production and Energy Conversion from CO2 and H2 Feedstock Gases with Mixed Methanogenic Community over Fe Nanoparticles.

Abstract:To achieve methanogenic community optimization and improve the conversion efficiency of CO2 to CH4, Fe nanoparticles were used to promote the Methanothermobacter abundance in methanogens, which significantly increased the conversion efficiency of CO2 and H-2 feedstock gases to CH4 product. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis revealed that Methanothermobacter abundance markedly increased from 7 to 16% when the Fe nanoparticles concentration increased from 0 to 1.5 g/L-R (the working volume in the bioreactor). Therefore, the CH4 yield significantly promoted from 0.105 to 0.186 L/L-R. However, when the Fe nanoparticles concentration was further increased to 2 g/L-R, methanogenesis was inhibited due to toxic effects. The electron transfer constant k(app )of anaerobic sludge increased by 32.8-fold to 5.77 x 10(-2) s(-1) when the Fe nanoparticles concentration increased from 0 to 1.5 g/L-R, which significantly promoted carbon conversion efficiency from 52.9 to 92.9% and energy conversion efficiency from 46.3 to 76.9%.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important energy strategy for converting organic waste to CH4. A major factor limiting the practical applicability of AD is the relatively long hydraulic retention time (HRT) which declines the treatment efficiency of digesters. A coupling process of anaerobic digestion and 'electromethanogenesis' was proposed to enhance anaerobic digestion at a short HRT in this study. Microorganisms analysis indicated that the electric-biological reactor enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens in both cathodic biofilm and suspended sludge, helping achieve the high organic removal (71.0% vs 42.3% [control reactor]) and CH4 production (248.5mL/h vs 51.3mL/h), while the additional electric input was only accounted for 25.6% of the energy income from the increased CH4 production. This study demonstrated that a bioelectrochemical enhanced anaerobic reactor could improve the CH4 production and organic removal at a short HRT, providing an economically feasible scheme to treat wastewater.

Abstract:This study presents the effect of bioaugmentation of thermophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste with Methanosarcina thermophila grown on a wood-derived biochar. Two different supplementation regimes were tested, namely a single bioaugmentation (SBABC) in which 10% v/v of the microbes grown on biochar (1 g/L) is added at setup of the reactors, versus a routine bioaugmentation (RBABC) wherein the same amount of supplements were added over 10 feeding cycles. The optimally performing 'R' and 'S' reactors had increased methane yields by 37% and 32% over their respective controls while reactors SBABC 2 and 3 produced 21.89% and 56.09% higher average methane yield than RBABC 2 and 3, respectively. It appears that a single dose bioaugmentation is advantageous for improving AD as analysed in terms of average methane yield and VFA production. This study provides the basis for understanding how biochar and bioaugmentation can be used for engineering sustainable pilot-scale AD processes.

Abstract:The anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and young landfill leachate was carried out in a sequencing batch reactor. Results showed that the anaerobic co-digestion system could enter the methanogenic stage without adding other inoculum, and while the system stopped producing gas, adding activated sludge as inoculum could restart the anaerobic co-digestion process. Specially, for that anaerobic co-digestion system with acid inhibition, the addition of activated sludge will help the system enter gas-production stage which may be ascribed to it consumed the acetic acid in the system. With this novel process, the dissolved organic carbon after anaerobic co-digestion was 20.5% of that of the leachate (1915 mg/L), while the proportion of humic substances in dissolved organic matter was increased to over 90%. This preliminary study indicates that this process would have a prospective application to the high value utilization of food waste and young landfill leachate.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In anaerobic systems, CO2-dependent methanogens as terminal electron acceptors determine the feasibility of organic degradation. In this study, targeting the enhancement of CO2-dependent methanogenesis, a strategy coupling the addition of magnetite and inorganic carbon recirculation was proposed. The results showed that the strategy facilitated the enrichment of Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina to the greatest extent (abundance of 42.9 and 38.8%, respectively), and metaproteomic analysis revealed that their enzymes coding for CO2-dependent methanogenesis were maximally expressed, compared with the single strategy. Combined with electrochemical analysis, magnetite was speculated to trigger direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET)-based syntrophy with extracellular redox-active mediators (Cyt C and flavins) in anaerobic sludge. The ability of Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina to accept electrons was significantly improved, as evidenced by the upregulated electron transfer proteins, such as F420H2 dehydrogenase, coenzyme F-420 hydrogenase, and CoB-CoM heterodisulfide reductase. Meanwhile, Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina enhanced HCO3 - takeup into cells via an ABC-type transport system under the condition of inorganic carbon recirculation, thus thermodynamically inducing electron consumption and inorganic carbon reduction. In summary, the coupling strategy had a great synergistic effect on the enhancement of DIET-based CO2-dependent methanogenesis and endowed the up-flow anaerobic sludge bed reactor with superior methanogenic performance for stable anaerobic wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A two-stage anaerobic digestion process utilizing food waste was investigated in this study, without any additive and co-digestion. Solid content, temperature and pH value were key controlling factors for hydrolysis, which results the optimized food waste hydrolysate with COD/VS food waste of 2.67. Efficient biogas production was maintained in long-term operation (> 150 d) without any additive, and methane production yields up to 699.7 mL·gVS -1 ·d -1 was achieved under organic loading rate (OLR) of 31.0 gVS·d -1 . Methane production can be recovered (70.4%) after temperature shock within 30 days. This study confirmed the possibility to establish two-stage food waste anaerobic digestion system under high organic load. pH, OLR, and temperature are key factors to maintain stable biogas production, while pH control was performed as a in situ sulfide control technology (75.8% sulfide reduction). This study provides practical strategies for food waste utilization and decreasing carbon footprint.

Abstract:Food waste (FW) is an impending issue, and its resource recovery and energy recycling have become a hotspot in the academic community. This paper presents an innovative integrated two-stage anaerobic digestion process that can enhance anaerobic digestion of food waste. The new technology is an attractive solution to resolve difficulties related to productivity and system optimization in traditional single and double-stage FW digestion processes. The study revealed that the oil extraction rate increased from 2% to 3%-4% after process improvement, and the specific biogas production of the integrated twostage biogas plant (50.2 m(3)/t) was 10.54% higher than single-stage biogas plant. Metagenome data analysis indicated that aceticlastic methanogenesis was the main route for methane production in the integrated two-stage biogas plant. Considering the short payback time (1.5 years), high net present value (11.49 million) and internal rate of return (36.97%), this biogas project was economically viable. In this context, this innovative process got through the recycling bottleneck of food waste and promoted the industrialization of anaerobic treatment of food waste. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:T HE LESIONS ARE FROM THE LOWER BACK OF A 67-year-old woman (Figure 1), the lower abdomenofa47-year-oldwoman(Figure2) (scalesshowmillimeters),andthelowerback of a 60-year-old man (Figure 3). All 3 lesions reveal a similar pattern. Note the presence of browngray and blue-gray localized coarse granules with areas of remaining seborrheic keratosis. The brown-gray and blue-gray localized and diffuse granular pattern is typical of lichen planus–like keratosis or benign lichenoid keratosis. It has been suggested that lichen planus–like keratosis may be the inflammatory stage of regressing benign but also malignant skin tumors, mainly solar lentigines and seborrheic keratosis. These cases illustrate the intermediate stage of this phenomenon in 3 examples of seborrheic keratosis.
