Abstract:High altitude (alpine) lakes are efficient sentinels of environmental processes, including local pollution and long-range atmospheric transfer, because these lakes are highly vulnerable to ongoing climate changes and increasing anthropogenic pressure. Towards improving the knowledge of trace element geochemistry in the water column of alpine lakes, we assessed 64 physico-chemical parameters, including macro- and micronutrients, major and trace element concentrations in the water column of 18 lakes in the Pyrenees, located along the border between France and Spain. Lake depth, morphology, retention time and watershed rock lithology did not exhibit sizable impact on major and trace element concentrations in the water column. However, acidic (pH = 4.7 ± 0.2) lakes were distinctly different from circumneutral lakes (pH = 6.8 ± 0.5) as they exhibited >10 times higher concentrations of SO42- and trace metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Be, Al, Ga and REEs). While some of these elements clearly mark the presence of sulphide-rich minerals within the watershed (Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb), the increased mobility of lithogenic elements (Be, Al, Ga and REEs) in acidic lakes may reflect the leaching of these elements from silicate dust derived from atmospheric deposits or surrounding granites. At the same time, compared to circumneutral lakes, acidic lake water displayed lower concentrations of dissolved oxyanions (As, Mo, V, B and W) and elevated SO42- concentrations. The latter could lead to efficient Ba removal from the water column. The exploitation of metal ores within the watershed of three lakes clearly impacted high Zn and Cd concentrations observed in their water column, despite two of these lakes not being acidic. We conclude that local impacts have a greater effect on the water column than long-range atmospheric inputs and that dissolved trace element concentration measurements can be used for revealing sulphide-rich minerals or acid mine drainage within the lakes' watershed.
Assessing Mercury Contamination Levels in the Sediments of Two Pyrenean Lakes

Abstract:Mercury, a trace metal, is a persistent environmental pollutant that can be detected even in remote regions, including high-mountain lakes. This study examined mercury concentrations in the sediment of two lakes in the French Pyrenees, the Legunabens and Labant lakes. Sediment samples were collected using a Hon-Kajak Sediment Corer, and mercury concentrations were measured following the EPA 7473 method with a direct mercury analyzer (DMA-80). Mercury levels reached up to 283 ng g−1 in the Legunabens lake and up to 110 ng g−1 in the Labant lake, possibly linked to the mining history of the Ariège department and atmospheric deposition from distant sources. These findings indicate significant contamination, ranging from an 8% to 42% probability of generating adverse biological effects according to Canadian standards, and approximately 90% higher concentrations compared to average mercury concentrations in other Pyrenean lakes. Such contamination poses potential risks to aquatic life and the environment due to mercury's toxicity and bioaccumulation in microorganisms.

Abstract:The high-Andean mountain of northern Chile host numerous water systems that is in risk due to increased mining activities. Total and dissolved Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in water, and Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn, As, Mo, Al, and V in sediments of 21 aquatic systems (rivers, saline lakes, salt flats), were studied. The presence of Pb, Cd, and As in waters and sediments could be explained, in part, by mining activities. Waters are not suitable for human consumption or irrigation due to high content of Cu and As and high pH that exceed Chilean water quality guideline values. The use of different background reference values influences noticeably the conclusion related to environmental quality of sediments, measured with different environmental indexes. The local geological background suggest that Cd, Mo, Pb, and As generate some degree of contamination, while the use of unpolluted systems as background suggest that all metals measured in sediments represent a low contamination risk. The use of background values of local unpolluted systems seems to be more realistic than geological formation or Upper Continental Crust reference values to assess the environmental condition. The ecological risk assessment suggests that Cd and As are threat for communities living in these aquatic environments. However, these systems support abundant wildlife, developing unique extreme ecosystems with great potential for non-consumptive use such as special interest tourism and conservation.

Abstract:The prolonged impact over the Tinto River estuary by both the significant pollution by acid mine drainage (AMD) affecting this river and the polluted releases from phosphogypsum (PG) piles has led to the severe environmental degradation of this ecosystem. The aim of this work was to assess the current environmental quality of the Tinto River estuary through the study of the spatial distribution of metal(loid)s and natural radionuclides in the surface sediments from the channel edge. The sediments contain mean concentrations 5-20 times higher than the background values for pollutants such as Zn, As, Cu, Pb, or U, and up to two orders of magnitude higher for P. The studied sediments are heavily polluted by toxic heavy metals and metalloids (Pb, Zn, Cu, and As) according to the US EPA guidelines. Most of the analyzed sediment samples are also strongly polluted by long-lived natural radionuclides, mainly U-isotopes and 210Pb with concentrations up to one order of magnitude higher than unpolluted sediments, mostly due to the contribution by the PG leachates. The enrichment factors (EF) were extremely high (EF > 50) for As and very severe enrichment (25 ≤ EF < 50) for P, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb.
Long-term sediment records reveal over three thousand years of heavy metal inputs in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (SE Spain)

Abstract:The Mar Menor lagoon combined high biological production and environmental quality, making it an important economic engine. However, the pressure of human activities put its ecological integrity at risk, the oldest environmental impact being mining activity recorded since Roman times, about 3500 years ago, reaching its maximum intensity in the 20th century, contributing heavy metals to the lagoon sediments for almost 30 centuries. This work reviews the spatiotemporal evolution of the main heavy metals in this coastal lagoon using data from 272 surface sediment samples obtained during the last 40 years and two deep cores covering the total history of the lagoon (c. 6500 yrs BP), so as their incidence in the lagoon trophic web. The observed patterns in sedimentation, sediment characteristics and heavy metal content respond to the complex interaction, sometimes synergistic and sometimes opposing, between climatic conditions, biological production and human activities, with mining being mainly responsible for Pb, Zn and Cd inputs and port activities for Cu. High Fe/Al, Ti/Al and Zr/Al ratios identify periods of mining activity, while periods of arid climatic conditions and deforestation that increase erosion processes in the drainage basin and silt concentration in the lagoon sediments are determined by high Zr/Rb and, to a lesser extent, Zr/Al and Si/Al ratios. After the cessation of direct discharges into the lagoon in the 1950s, the recent evolution of heavy metals concentration and its spatial redistribution would be determined by hydrographic and biogeochemical processes, solubility of different elements, and coastal works in harbours and on beaches. The bioconcentration factor decreases along the trophic levels of the food web, suggesting that the lagoon ecosystem provides an important service by retaining heavy metals in the sediment, largely preventing their bioavailability, but actions involving resuspension or changes in sediment conditions would pose a risk to organisms.

Abstract:According to Water Framework Directive requirements, Member States must identify and analyze effects derived from human pressures in aquatic systems. As different kind of pressures can impact water bodies at different scales, analyses of spatio-temporal evolution of water bodies becomes essential in order to understand ecosystem responses. In this investigation, an analysis of spatio-temporal evolution of sedimentary metal pollution (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) in 12 Basque estuaries (Bay of Biscay) is presented. Data collected in extensive sampling surveys is the basis for the GIS-based statistical approach used. The implementation of pollution abatement measures is reflected in a long-term decontamination process, mostly evident in estuaries with highest historical sediment pollution levels. Spatial evolution is determined by either naturally occurring or human driven processes. Such spatial processes are more obviously being reflected in estuaries with lower historical sediment pollution levels.

Abstract:Atmospheric pollution, one of the leading environmental problems in South and East Asia, and its impact on the terrestrial environmental quality remain poorly understood particularly in alpine areas where both historical and present-day mining and smelting operations might leave an imprint. Here, we reconstructed atmospheric trace metals pollution during the past century using core sediments from a large and deep alpine lake in Southwest China. The implication of in lake and/or in watershed sediment focusing in pollution quantification is discussed by analyzing 15 sediment cores. Factor analysis and enrichment factor indicated Cd, Pb and Sb as the typical pollutants. Distinct peaks of Pb and Sb pollution were observed around the 1920s, but little Pb pollution was detected in recent decades, different from other studies in similar regions. Cadmium pollution was observed until the mid-1980s synchronized with Sb. The distinctive variations in atmospheric trace metal pollution process in Southwest China highlight the regional and sub-regional sources of metal pollutants, which should be primarily attributed to non-ferrous metal smelting emissions. Both natural and anthropogenic metals showed wide concentration ranges though exhibited similar temporal trends in the 15 cores. Spatial variations of anthropogenic metals were influenced by the in-watershed pollutants remobilization, whereas, natural metals were regulated by the detrital materials in the sub-basin. In-lake sediment focusing had little influence on the spatial distributions of all metals, different from the traditional sediment focusing pattern observed in small lakes. Anthropogenic Cd accumulation in sediments ranged from 1.5 to 10.1mgm−2 in a specific core with an average of 6.5mgm−2 for the entire lake, highlighting that a reliable whole-lake pollutant budget requires an analysis of multiple cores. Our study suggests that the management of aquatic ecosystem health should take the remobilization of in-watershed stored pollutants into consideration especially under increasing human perturbation.

Abstract:Abstract Historical records of trace elements in lake sediments provide source-to-sink information about potentially toxic pollutants across space and time. We investigated two lakes located at different elevations in the Ecuadorian Andes to understand how trace element fluxes are related to (i) geology, (ii) erosion in the watersheds, and (iii) local point sources and atmospheric loads. In remote Lake Fondococha (4150 m a.s.l.), total Hg fluxes stay constant between ca. 1760 and 1950 and show an approximately 4.4-fold increase between pre-1950 and post-1950 values. The post-1950 increase in fluxes of other trace elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) is lower (2.1–3.0-fold) than for Hg. Mostly lithogenic sources and enhanced soil erosion contribute to their post-1950 increase (lithogenic contribution: > 85%, Hg: ~ 58%). Average post-1950 Hg fluxes are approximately 4.3 times higher in peri-urban Lake Llaviucu (3150 m a.s.l.) than in the remote Lake Fondococha. Post-1950 fluxes of the other trace elements showed larger differences between Lakes Fondococha and Llaviucu (5.2 < 25–29.5-fold increase; Ni < Pb–Cd). The comparison of the post-1950 average trace element fluxes that are derived from point and airborne sources revealed 5–687 (Hg–Pb) times higher values in Lake Llaviucu than in Lake Fondococha suggesting that Lake Llaviucu’s proximity to the city of Cuenca strongly influences its deposition record (industrial emissions, traffic, caged fishery). Both lakes responded with temporary drops in trace element accumulations to park regulations in the 1970s and 1990s, but show again increasing trends in recent times, most likely caused by increase in vehicular traffic and openings of copper and gold mines around Cajas National Park.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that can cause adverse effects for the health of ecosystems. The Caudal River is one of the main rivers in the Asturias region (NW Spain), whose basin is highly anthropized, hosting several Hg mines, closed in the last century. Arsenic (As) is also found in the mineral paragenesis of the Hg deposits, posing a greater environmental risk. In the mining sites, remaining old facilities and tailings continue to release these elements into the environment. In this work, samples of fluvial sediments and water were taken, both in areas affected by anthropic activity and in pristine areas, in order to establish the background levels for the critical elements. The mineralogical study of the sediments, combined with EDS microanalysis, is useful to identify mineralogical traps such as Fe oxides or clays to retain the As. The As content in all sampled sediments is above the threshold effect levels (TEL), the possible effect range within which adverse effects occasionally occur, according to the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life. This fact is related to a naturally high geochemical background in the basin, due to the existing mineral deposits. The PEL threshold (the probable effect range within which adverse effects frequently occur) is exceeded by more than an order of magnitude in the sediments downstream of the Hg mines. In these points, the As content in the water, exceeding 700 μg L −1 As, is also above the quality standard established in Spanish legislation. As a result, the Caudal River tributaries in the lower part of the basin do not reach a good ecological state, according to the Hydrological Planning Office, and in some cases their state is deficient, showing low richness and high dominance of macroinvertebrates. Although the concentrations decrease with distance from the source, these findings justify the low ecological quality of the affected watercourses.

Abstract:Sediments sampled at the estuary of the Oka River in the biosphere reserve of Urdaibai, Spain were analyzed for trace elements. Sediments were collected at 45 points of the estuary and the concentration of 14 elements was measured. The geoaccumulation indexes (I geo ), Normalized Average Weighted Concentrations (NAWC) and mean Effect Range-Median quotients (mERMq) were calculated. The results obtained were complementary and allowed intra- and inter-estuary comparison. According to the present findings, the estuary was classified as healthy, since the anthropogenic contribution of metals and metalloids was generally small. However, shipping and fishing activities at the ports of Bermeo and Mundaka and urban and industrial wastes from Gernika were regarded as the major pollution sources. Nevertheless, only slightly contaminated and toxic sediments, especially related to Ni and Cu, were found in the towns of Gernika and Mundaka.

Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) Dispersion in Alluvial Deposits from Abandoned Mining Sites

Abstract:In the watersheds of abandoned mining districts, it is common to find remains of former facilities and waste dams on stream banks and slopes—a situation that results in the transport and accumulation of metal(loid)s in alluvial deposits. To analyze this problem, an area of the former mining district of Linares–La Carolina (southern Spain) was selected to evaluate the contents and distributions of Ag, As, Ba, Cu, and Pb as potentially toxic elements (PTEs) found in the mineral paragenesis. Specifically, this study focused on the Siles Stream, which runs through a sector where underground mining for the exploitation of galena veins generated abundant mining wastes, mainly waste rock and tailings. Thirty-four sediment samples from the stream bed of the Siles Stream and two sediment samples from the Guadiel River, of which it is a tributary, were analyzed. Floodplain sediments were sampled in the stream banks at the middle and lower reaches (11 samples), as well as the riverine soils developed at the mouth of the Siles Stream (22 samples). The analyzed samples presented high levels of PTEs, in most cases with values much higher than the generic reference levels established by European and regional legislation for PTEs in soils. In the case of Pb, the main metal mined in this district, contents of up to 27,074 mg·kg−1 were observed in the stream bed sediments. Very high concentrations of Pb also appeared in the floodplain sediments, with maximum values in the middle course of the stream, where the concentration reached 43,692 mg·kg−1. With respect to the sediments of the Guadiel river bed, the Pb content was 699 mg·kg−1 before the confluence with the stream and 2537 mg·kg−1 downstream, which clearly reflects the influence of the contributions from the Siles Stream. The enrichment factors (EFs) show that the sediments present a severe to very severe anthropogenic influence for Ag, As, Ba, Cu, and Pb. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicates that the entire basin is extremely polluted by Pb, to which As and Ag are added in the middle course of the stream. The potential ecological risk index (RI) and pollution load index (PLI) based on the contamination factor (CF) suggested that metal loads far exceeded the reference values. Selective chemical extraction methods were used to assess the potential bioavailability of these elements in sediment and soil samples. The results showed high concentrations of Pb in the exchangeable fraction, which poses a significant ecological risk and potential human health risks.

Historical trace metal fluxes in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone as evidenced by a sedimentary record from the Espejo de los Lirios lake

Abstract:The accumulation of selected trace metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) was studied in a sediment core collected at Espejo de los Lirios lake, a precipitation-dominated seepage lake in Northern Mexico City Metropolitan Zone (MCMZ). A (210)Pb-derived chronology, obtained from the same core, was used to reconstruct the historical metal fluxes at the site, allowing evaluation of the impact of environmental changes promoted by the development of the City during the last approximately 125 years. The highest levels of metal enrichment above natural concentration levels (NCL) in the sediments from Espejo de los Lirios lake were found for Ag and Pb (approximately 250%) as well as a slight enrichment for Cd (55%), Cr (84%), Co (20%), Cu (60%), Hg (47%), Ni (45%), V (59%) and Zn (66%). Fluxes of trace metals appeared to have noticeably increased from the last 45 years showing the maximum increments for Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, V and Zn during the 1980's (9 to 13 fold natural fluxes), for Ag and Cu (17 and 12 fold, respectively) during the 1990's and for Hg and Pb (2 and 13 fold) during the middle 1970's. Low levels of metal enrichment observed have evidenced that the most conspicuous consequences of the expansive growth of this area of the MCMZ, are mostly related to deforestation and erosion of the surrounding areas, rather than to trace metal pollution. Based on PCA, it can be assumed that atmospheric deposition, weathering of bedrock and soil within the watershed and authigenic production, are the most important processes that explain the trace metal distribution in the site.
Spatio-temporal Accumulation Patterns of Trace Metals in Sediments of a Large Plateau Lake (erhai) in Southwest China and Their Relationship with Human Activities over the Past Century

Abstract:Lake sediments are important archives of environmental changes and human activities, but the influences of human processes and lake spatial heterogeneity on the sedimentation of trace metals are still poorly understood. Based on 16 sediment cores from Lake Erhai (249 km(2)), trace metals (including As and Hg) contamination over the past century and the spatial heterogeneity and their response to the in-lake and in-watershed factors were explored. The elements were divided into two groups by cluster analysis: group I included As, Cd, Hg and Pb, and group II included Al, Fe, Ti, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn. The element concentrations were generally stable in the low section of the cores, and started to increase since the 1980s for elements in group I, while element concentrations in group II generally decreased since the 1990s. Enrichment factor analyses identified group I elements as typical pollutants, and suggested that contamination started from the 1980s and reached maximum in the 2000s. Regional atmospheric deposition from ore mining and smelting was the main source, and anthropogenic As and Cd were also affected by watershed industrial discharges. Multi-core analyses indicated that spatial distributions and accumulation of As, Cd, Hg and Pb in the cores were affected by both human activities and sediment supply. Different from metal contamination pattern in surface sediments, high anthropogenic metal fluxes appeared in the central lake areas due to more sediment accumulation. Our study highlighted that reliable estimation of whole-lake pollutant inventories strongly relied on comprehensive analyses of multiple sediment cores and legacy input from the catchment.
The Anthropocene fingerprint: Hazardous elements in waters of a coastal Mediterranean alluvial plain (Valencia, Spain)

Abstract:This study focuses on the alluvial plain spanning between the Turia and Jucar rivers (486 km2) in Valencia, Spain - a highly productive agricultural area that also involves a Natural Park (La Albufera). Thirty-five points across different water sources and land uses were sampled to map the spatial distribution of 14 heavy metals (Al, As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb, Sr, Tl, and Zn), and to study the potential influence of water characteristics and environmental factors on them. Two pollution indexes were applied, Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI) and Water Pollution Index (WPI), to assess the water quality state in the area. High levels were predominantly found in the southern region, particularly within rice farming areas. For B, Sr, and Tl, all samples exceeded WHO limits, EU legislation, or EPA benchmarks, with 61.76 % and 85.71 % of samples surpassing standards for Al and Li, respectively. Water salinization parameters greatly influenced the dynamics of Al, As, B, Li, Sr, and Tl. Analysis using both indexes (HEI and WPI) revealed poor water quality in the area, particularly in rice fields, posing potential toxic effects on ecosystems and human health. The findings of this work are valuable for understanding elements of concern in coastal wetlands under global change.

Abstract:Trace metal contents and fluxes in downward particulate matter and dated sediment cores of the NW Alboran Sea are analysed in this study with the aim of assessing the role of the Atlantic inflow on their transport. Increases in Zn, Cu and Pb were detected in downward particulate matter collected by sediment traps after river flooding events and after the Aznalcollar mining spill. Their arrival coincided within the recently estimated time range for river particles discharged into the Gulf of Cádiz to reach the Alboran Sea, indicating that their transfer is enhanced during events of increased river inputs of contaminated particulate matter. This also suggests that the effects of potential tailing dam failures in the Gulf of Cádiz watersheds could reach the Alboran Sea. These trace metals also increased in the sediment cores from the continental rise since the second half of the 19th century, suggesting that contaminated particles have been continuously transferred towards the Mediterranean Sea since that time, when mining concessions and production increased in the SW Iberian Pyrite Belt.

Reconstructing 90 years of anthropogenic activities in a subtropical reservoir: a chemometric and paleolimnological perspective

Abstract:Environmental reference conditions (RC) and historical trends are crucial for assessing the degree of freshwater impact and formulating restoration measures. This is particularly relevant for freshwater systems used as potable water sources. Using sediments from the Carlos Maggiolo reservoir (Minas, Uruguay), located in a watershed with a mining history, this study aimed to (1) establish metal (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) RC using a predicted interval (PI) chemometric technique; (2) evaluate metal enrichment and toxicity over time and space; and (3) assess environmental changes examining geochemical proxies. Surface sediments from 29 stations were used to establish RC and a core from the dam area was sampled to infer past conditions. The sediments were submitted to partial digestion and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry- ICP-OES. Enrichment factor (EF) calculated using both PI and bottom core values did not show significant differences over time. Over space and time, most metals primarily originated from natural sources (EF < 2). The PI in mg/kg was Cr: 23.74-37.32; Cu: 25.75-48.99; Ni: 16.29-25.55; Pb: 7.63-13.75; and Zn: 94.34-174.80. A stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis corroborated by a permutational multivariate analysis of variance categorized the reservoir into two zones: Zone I, before reservoir operation to ~ 1996, and Zone II from ~ 1997 to 2017. The average concentrations of the main metals of toxicological interest in zones I and II, respectively, were as follows: Cr 37.60 ± 1.59, 34.54 ± 1.49 mg/kg; Cu 49.76 ± 2.84, 44.55 ± 2.70 mg/kg; Ni 24.11 ± 0.67, 22.53 ± 1.22 mg/kg; Pb 12.40 ± 0.63, 13.52 ± 0.82 mg/kg; Zn 99.25 ± 3.12, 93.86 ± 4.42 mg/kg; Mn 1160.56 ± 68.88, 1441.61 ± 83.55 mg/kg; and P 1243.21 ± 271.56, 1128.42 ± 183.10 mg/kg. According to a principal component analysis, the period preceding reservoir operation until ~ 1985 was linked to mining activities and application of Cu2SO4, and the period from 1985s to 2000 was influenced by C and P concentrations due to increasing agricultural and afforestation activities in the watershed that consume P fertilizers. The most recent period, from 2000 to ~ 2017, was characterized by an increase in sedimentation rates mainly associated with erosion, particularly in the agricultural areas. This subsequent soil loss in the watershed could compromise the reservoir's useful life. This study contributes to a better understanding of metal geochemistry in subtropical reservoirs and aids in formulating effective recovery and restoration measures.
Integrated Assessment of Metal Contamination of Soils, Sediments, and Runoff Water in a Dry Riverbed from a Mining Area Under Torrential Rain Events

Abstract:Dry riverbeds can transport mining waste during torrential rain events, disseminating pollutants from mining areas to natural ecosystems. This study evaluates the impact of these mine wastes on soils, sediments, and runoff/pore water in the La Carrasquilla dry riverbed (southeastern Spain). An integrated approach utilizing geochemical and mineralogical techniques was employed, analyzing water, soil, and sediment samples from both the headwater and mouth of the riverbed. Soil profiles and pore water were collected at 30 cm, 60 cm, and 90 cm deep, alongside sediment and runoff water samples. The assessment of metal(loid) contamination focused on arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, manganese, zinc, and lead, utilizing sequential extraction to evaluate metal partitioning across soil phases. Various pollution indices, including the contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and metal(loid) evaluation index (MEI), were employed to classify contamination levels. The highest level of contamination was reported in the headwater, which suggested anthropogenic activities linked to the presence of mining residues as the major source of metal(loid)s. However, an active deposition of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn was reported in the topsoil at the mouth. In the headwater, a quartz and muscovite-rich zone exhibited the highest Cf for Pb (1022), primarily bound to the soil residual fraction (62.8%). At the headwater and mouth, pore water showed higher concentrations of sulfate, Ca, Na, Cl, Mg, and Mn and higher salinity than acceptable limits for drinking water or irrigation established by the World Health Organization. Runoff-water metal concentrations surpassed established guidelines, with MEI values indicating significant contamination by cadmium (36.1) and manganese (19.0). These findings highlight the considerable ecological risk of Pb and underscore the need for targeted remediation strategies to mitigate environmental impacts in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon.

Abstract:Environment quality of suburban and urban lakes receives special attention due to their great impacted by human perturbations and important roles in ecosystem services. Herein, the spatio-temporal variations of 10 metal and metalloid elements in 13 sediment cores from a large suburban lake (Dianchi) were studied to explore the changes in sedimentary environment and pollution and their associations with human activities since the last century. Concentrations of each element were largely varied at spatial scales, but showed similar vertical trends among the profiles, suggesting comparable changes in sedimentary processes in each lake region. Cluster analysis showed two groups of elements: group I includes Al, Ti, Cu, Cr and Ni, and group II includes As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn. Temporally, concentrations of all elements were generally constant until the 1950s. Thereafter, group I elements along with the clay percentage started to decrease, indicating accelerated input of coarser soils due to strengthening human perturbation and changing land use. However, group II elements showed increasing values of concentrations, particularly the enrichment factors (EF = 1.0-10.8), which peaked between mid-1990s and 2000, indicating continued pollutants input with watershed economic development. With the implementation of environment management measures, pollution was initially restrained or reduced in recent decades as indicated by the stable EFs and sedimentary fluxes of Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn and decreasing values of As. Spatially, the stocks of anthropogenic As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn were higher in the northern while lower in the southern lake area. This spatial difference was mainly due to the large input of industrial and domestic wastewaters in the northern compared to the area in the southern that receives runoff from agricultural and forested land. Overall, the spatio-temporal patterns in accumulation of metal and metalloid elements in the lake reliably reflected the impacts of watershed human activities. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Anthropogenic activities in urban, agrarian, or industrial areas are the main cause of heavy metals in sediments worldwide. Since the 1960s, there have been submarine discharges through outfalls of poorly treated or untreated wastewater on the south coast of Mallorca island (Mediterranean Sea). In this study, the pollution of marine sediments is analyzed at a great number of points on the south of the seacoast. Heavy metal concentrations of As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn, total inorganic carbon (TIC), sulfur, mineralogy, and grain size were analyzed. The objective is to evaluate the concentrations of toxic substances and their spatial distribution and ranges that can negatively affect marine ecosystems and human health. In addition, the results obtained have been compared with standardized indices for marine sediments, and a regional index has been developed with the background values of heavy metals obtained in the sediments of the study area. To obtain consistent conclusions, concentrations of heavy metals were classified with the Igeo Index. The concentrations of heavy metals obtained show that a great number of samples exceeded the limits considered for uncontaminated sediments according to the index applied. Elements such as Hg, Ba, Pb, and Cu showed high concentrations close to the outfalls and lower concentrations in zones far from these points. To support the assessment, chemical processes such as dissolution or chemical precipitation have been studied. The results also show that marine sediments can be a good trap for chemical elements and a good proxy to analyze the impact of anthropogenic activities in areas heavily pressured by humans, and the risk to the environment and human health.

Abstract:Opencast mining of sulfide ore deposits may lead to the formation of anthropogenic acidic lakes with highly polluted waters. In these systems, it is crucial to understand the hydrological connections between surface and groundwater and their contribution to the pollutant load delivered to the downgradient streams. This study characterizes the interactions between surface and groundwater in an acidic pit lake using different geochemical tracers (i.e., REE and other trace metals). The San Telmo pit lake, located in one of the most pollutant sources of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), can be considered as a flow-through pit lake except during dry periods, when it behaves as a terminal lake due to lower inputs by surface waters and higher outputs by evaporation. Results based on geochemical tracers indicate that the main inputs to the pit lake come from surface waters, with minor groundwater inputs rich in As, Cr, Cu, Fe and Pb. The contaminant load released from the mining area is very high (e.g., median values of 520 kg/day of Fe and 38 kg/day of Zn), causing the degradation of the fluvial network downstream. Most of released pollutants come from waste dumps located at the W of the mining zone (~50-70% of Al, Cd, Mg, Mn, Ni, SO4 and Zn and > 70% for Cu, Cr, Fe and, V), while the contribution of the water coming out the pit lake and other dumps is much lower. Thus, remediation efforts to improve the area and fluvial courses downstream must focus on the W waste dumps.
