Abstract:With the rapid technology development pushing the introduction of the fifth industrial revolution, Industry 5.0, robots are getting rid of fences and sharing the workspace with humans. In such a context, ensuring the safety of humans and robots is a critical demand. One of the effective methods for this is proximity sensing, among which capacitive sensors are widely used to detect the proximity of humans. However, the capacitive sensor cannot get accurate distance information since the capacitance varies with the characteristics of obstacles. This work develops a capacitive robot skin, seamlessly integrated into the proposed smooth velocity transition framework to deal with this challenge. The robot skin is customized to cover a large area on the exterior of a 6-DOF robot arm. A hierarchical proximity perception approach is used to grade the sensing state. Based on this, distance reduction and collision avoidance velocity generation methods are used to reach a smooth and quick decay of the velocity. The control strategy is applied in a pick-and-place scenery for verification. Compared to the traditional threshold trigger method, the proposed smooth velocity transition framework can greatly reduce the absolute value of the local maximum acceleration, which can enable a flexible and natural human-robot interaction while ensuring human safety.

Abstract:The new face of modern industrial scenarios involves shared workspaces where humans and robots work closely together. To ensure safe human-robot collaboration (HRC), regulations have been updated introducing the ISO/TS15066. However, complying with these regulations often leads to inefficient behavior, such as unnecessarily reducing robot speed or unpredictably changing the robot path, which may negatively affect the operator perception of the robot. In this letter an optimal approach to address together these two issues is proposed. Starting from a desired final configuration, the framework plans a collision-free trajectory for the robot. Subsequently, predictability is taken into account and a set of virtual tubes into which the path of the robot can move is built. Lastly, an optimization problem is solved online to ensure that the robot stays within these tubes and the velocities are compliant with the ISO/TS 15066. The proposed approach has been experimentally validated in two different scenarios: one composed by a mobile manipulator, i.e. a UR10e mounted on a Neobotix MPO-500, and one composed by only a collaborative manipulator, i.e. a UR5e.

Abstract:The new paradigm of human-robot collaboration has led to the creation of shared work environments in which humans and robots work in close contact with each other. Consequently, the safety regulations have been updated addressing these new scenarios. The mere application of these regulations may lead to a very inefficient behavior of the robot. In order to preserve safety for the human operators and allow the robot to reach a desired configuration in a safe and efficient way, a two layers architecture for trajectory planning and scaling is proposed. The first layer calculates the nominal trajectory and continuously adapts it based on the human behavior. The second layer, which explicitly considers the safety regulations, scales the robot velocity and requests for a new trajectory if the robot speed drops. The proposed architecture is experimentally validated on a Pilz PRBT manipulator.

Abstract:There is invariably a trade-off between safety and efficiency for collaborative robots (cobots) in human-robot collaborations. Robots that interact minimally with humans can work with high speed and accuracy but cannot adapt to new tasks or respond to unforeseen changes, whereas robots that work closely with humans can but only by becoming passive to humans, meaning that their main tasks suspended and efficiency compromised. Accordingly, this paper proposes a new complementary framework for human-robot collaboration that balances the safety of humans and the efficiency of robots. In this framework, the robot carries out given tasks using a vision-based adaptive controller, and the human expert collaborates with the robot in the null space. Such a decoupling drives the robot to deal with existing issues in task space (e.g., uncalibrated camera, limited field of view) and in null space (e.g., joint limits) by itself while allowing the expert to adjust the configuration of the robot body to respond to unforeseen changes (e.g., sudden invasion, change of environment) without affecting the robot's main task. Additionally, the robot can simultaneously learn the expert's demonstration in task space and null space beforehand with dynamic movement primitives (DMP). Therefore, an expert's knowledge and a robot's capability are both explored and complementary. Human demonstration and involvement are enabled via a mixed interaction interface, i.e., augmented reality (AR) and haptic devices. The stability of the closed-loop system is rigorously proved with Lyapunov methods. Experimental results in various scenarios are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:Industrial collaborative robotics is promising for manufacturing activities where the presence of a robot alongside a human operator can improve operator's working conditions, flexibility, and productivity. A collaborative robotic application has to guarantee not only safety of the human operator, but also fluency in the collaboration, as well as performance in terms of productivity and task time. In this paper, we present an approach to enhance fluency and productivity in human-robot collaboration through online scaling of dynamic safety zones. A supervisory controller runs online safety checks between bounding volumes enclosing robot and human to identify possible collision dangers. To optimize the sizes of safety zones enclosing the manipulator, the method minimizes the time of potential stop trajectories considering the robot dynamics and its torque constraints, and leverages the directed speed of the robot parts with respect to the human. Simulations and experimental tests on a seven-degree-of-freedom robotic arm verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, and collaborative fluency metrics show the benefits of the method with respect to existing approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, a strategy to handle the human safety in a multi-robot scenario is devised. In the presented framework, it is foreseen that robots are in charge of performing any cooperative manipulation task which is parameterized by a proper task function. The devised architecture answers to the increasing demand of strict cooperation between humans and robots, since it equips a general multi-robot cell with the feature of making robots and human working together. The human safety is properly handled by defining a safety index which depends both on the relative position and velocity of the human operator and robots. Then, the multi-robot task trajectory is properly scaled in order to ensure that the human safety never falls below a given threshold which can be set in worst conditions according to a minimum allowed distance. Simulations results are presented in order to prove the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract:The current capabilities of robotic systems make human collaboration necessary to accomplish complex tasks effectively. In this work, we are introducing a framework to ensure safety in a human-robot collaborative environment. The system is composed of a wearable 2-DOF robot, a low-cost and easy-to-install tracking system, and a collision avoidance algorithm based on the Artificial Potential Field (APF). The wearable robot is designed to hold a fiducial marker and maintain its visibility to the tracking system, which, in turn, localizes the user's hand with good accuracy and low latency and provides haptic feedback to the user. The system is designed to enhance the performance of collaborative tasks while ensuring user safety. Three experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The first one evaluated the accuracy of the tracking system. The second experiment analyzed human-robot behavior during an imminent collision. The third experiment evaluated the system in a collaborative activity in a shared working environment. The results show that the implementation of the introduced system reduces the operation time by 16% and increases the average distance between the user's hand and the robot by 5 cm.

Abstract:Designing an efficient and resilient human-robot collaboration strategy that not only upholds the safety and ergonomics of shared workspace but also enhances the performance and agility of collaborative setup presents significant challenges concerning environment perception and robot control. In this research, we introduce a novel approach for collaborative environment monitoring and robot motion regulation to address this multifaceted problem. Our study proposes novel computation and division of safety monitoring zones, adhering to ISO 13855 and TS 15066 standards, utilizing 2D lasers information. These zones are not only configured in the standard three-layer arrangement but are also expanded into two adjacent quadrants, thereby enhancing system uptime and preventing unnecessary deadlocks. Moreover, we also leverage 3D visual information to track dynamic human articulations and extended intrusions. Drawing upon the fused sensory data from 2D and 3D perceptual spaces, our proposed hierarchical controller stably regulates robot velocity, validated using Lasalle in-variance principle. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces task execution time and system response delay, resulting in improved efficiency and resilience within collaborative settings.

Abstract:Collaborative robots, designed to work alongside humans in industrial manufacturing, are becoming increasingly prevalent. These robots typically monitor their distance from workers and slow down or stop when safety thresholds are breached. However, this results in reduced task execution performance and safety-related uncertainty for the worker. To address these issues, we propose an alternative safety strategy, where the worker is responsible for their own safety and the robot executes its task without modifying its speed except in the case of imminent contact with the worker. The robot provides precise situation-awareness information to the worker using a mixed-reality display, presenting information about relative distance and movement intentions. The worker is then responsible for placing themselves with respect to the robot. A user study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of task execution, worker safety, and user experience. Results suggest a good user experience and safety perception while maintaining worker safety, which would support social sustainability of human activities in industrial production contexts that require collaboration with robots.

Abstract:This paper proposes a human detection-based cognitive system for robots to work in human-existing environment and keep the safety of humans. An integrated system is implemented with perception, recognition, reasoning, decision-making, and action. Without using any traditional safety cages, a vision-based detection system is implemented for robots to monitor the environment and to detect humans. Subsequently, reasoning and decision making enables robots to evaluate the current safety-related situation for humans and provide corresponding safety signals. The decision making is based on maximizing the productivity of the robot in the manipulation process and keep the safety of humans in the environment. The system is implemented with a Baxter humanoid robot and a PowerBot mobile robot. Practical experiments and simulation experiments are carried out to validate our design.

Abstract:Multiple levels of safety measures are required by multiple interaction modes which collaborative robots need to perform industrial tasks with human co-workers. We develop three independent modules to account for safety in different types of human-robot interaction: vision-based safety monitoring pauses robot when human is present in a shared space; contact-based safety monitoring pauses robot when unexpected contact happens between human and robot; hierarchical intention tracking keeps robot in a safe distance from human when human and robot work independently, and switches robot to compliant mode when human intends to guide robot. We discuss the prospect of future research in development and integration of multi-level safety modules. We focus on how to provide safety guarantees for collaborative robot solutions with human behavior modeling.

Abstract:Collaborative robots can relief human operators from excessive efforts during payload lifting activities. Modelling the human partner allows the design of safe and efficient collaborative strategies. In this paper, we present a control approach for human-robot collaboration based on human monitoring through whole-body wearable sensors, and interaction modelling through coupled rigid-body dynamics. Moreover, a trajectory advancement strategy is proposed, allowing for online adaptation of the robot trajectory depending on the human motion. The resulting framework allows us to perform payload lifting tasks, taking into account the ergonomic requirements of the agents. Validation has been performed in an experimental scenario using the iCub3 humanoid robot and a human subject sensorized with the iFeel wearable system.

Abstract:The interaction of humans and robots in less constrained environments gains a lot of attention lately and the safety of such interaction is of utmost importance. Two ways of risk assessment are prescribed by recent safety standards: (i) power and force limiting and (ii) speed and separation monitoring. Unlike typical solutions in the industry that are restricted to mere safety zone monitoring, we present a framework that realizes separation distance monitoring between a robot and a human operator in a detailed, yet versatile, transparent, and tunable fashion. The separation distance is assessed pair-wise for all keypoints on the robot and the human body and as such can be selectively modified to account for specific conditions. The operation of this framework is illustrated on a Nao humanoid robot interacting with a human partner perceived by a RealSense RGB-D sensor and employing the OpenPose human skeleton estimation algorithm.

Abstract:In order to enable physical human-robot interaction where humans and (mobile) manipulators share their workspace and work together, robots have to be equipped with important capabilities to guarantee human safety. The robots have to recognize possible collisions with the human co-worker and react anticipatorily by adapting their motion to avert dangerous situations while they are executing their task. Therefore, methods have been developed that allow to monitor the workspace of mobile manipulators using multiple depth sensors to gather information about the robot environment. This encompasses both 3D information about obstacles in the close robot surroundings and the prediction of obstacle motions in the entire monitored space. Based on this information, a collision-free robot motion is planned and during the execution the robot continuously reacts to unforeseen dangerous situations by adapting its planned motion, slowing down or stopping. For the demonstration of a manufacturing scenario, the developed methods have been implemented on a prototypical mobile manipulator. The algorithms handle both robot platform and manipulator in a uniform manner so that an overall optimization of the path and of the collision avoidance behavior is possible. By integrating the monitoring, planning, and interaction control components, the task of grasping, placing and delivering objects to humans in a shared workspace is demonstrated.

Abstract:In industrial applications, complex tasks require human collaboration since the robot doesn't have enough dexterity. However, the robots are still implemented as tools and not as collaborative intelligent systems. To ensure safety in the human-robot collaboration, we introduce a system that presents a new method that integrates low-cost wearable mocap, and an improved collision avoidance algorithm based on the artificial potential fields. Wearable optical motion capturing allows to track the human hand position with high accuracy and low latency on large working areas. To increase the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, two obstacle types are discriminated according to their collision probability. A preliminary experiment was performed to analyze the algorithm behavior and to select the best values for the obstacle's threshold angle $\theta_{OBS}$, and for the avoidance threshold distance $d_{AT}$. The second experiment was carried out to evaluate the system performance with $d_{AT}$ = 0.2 m and $\theta_{OBS}$ = 45 degrees. The third experiment evaluated the system in a real collaborative task. The results demonstrate the robust performance of the robotic arm generating smooth collision-free trajectories. The proposed technology will allow consumer robots to safely collaborate with humans in cluttered environments, e.g., factories, kitchens, living rooms, and restaurants.

Abstract:Robots are increasingly present in our lives, sharing the workspace and tasks with human co-workers. However, existing interfaces for human-robot interaction / cooperation (HRI/C) have limited levels of intuitiveness to use and safety is a major concern when humans and robots share the same workspace. Many times, this is due to the lack of a reliable estimation of the human pose in space which is the primary input to calculate the human-robot minimum distance (required for safety and collision avoidance) and HRI/C featuring machine learning algorithms classifying human behaviours / gestures. Each sensor type has its own characteristics resulting in problems such as occlusions (vision) and drift (inertial) when used in an isolated fashion. In this paper, it is proposed a combined system that merges the human tracking provided by a 3D vision sensor with the pose estimation provided by a set of inertial measurement units (IMUs) placed in human body limbs. The IMUs compensate the gaps in occluded areas to have tracking continuity. To mitigate the lingering effects of the IMU offset we propose a continuous online calculation of the offset value. Experimental tests were designed to simulate human motion in a human-robot collaborative environment where the robot moves away to avoid unexpected collisions with de human. Results indicate that our approach is able to capture the human\textsc's position, for example the forearm, with a precision in the millimetre range and robustness to occlusions.

Abstract:Human-robot collision avoidance is a key in collaborative robotics and in the framework of Industry 4.0. It plays an important role for achieving safety criteria while having humans and machines working side-by-side in unstructured and time-varying environment. This study introduces the subject of manipulator's on-line collision avoidance into a real industrial application implementing typical sensors and a commonly used collaborative industrial manipulator, KUKA iiwa. In the proposed methodology, the human co-worker and the robot are represented by geometric primitives (capsules). The minimum distance and relative velocity between them is calculated, when human/obstacles are nearby the concept of hypothetical repulsion and attraction vectors is used. By coupling this concept with a mathematical representation of robot's kinematics, a task level control with collision avoidance capability is achieved. Consequently, the off-line generated nominal path of the industrial task is modified on-the-fly so the robot is able to avoid collision with the co-worker safely while being able to fulfill the industrial operation. To guarantee motion continuity when switching between different tasks, the notion of repulsion-vector-reshaping is introduced. Tests on an assembly robotic cell in automotive industry show that the robot moves smoothly and avoids collisions successfully by adjusting the off-line generated nominal paths.
Safe Multimodal Communication in Human-Robot Collaboration

Abstract:The new industrial settings are characterized by the presence of human and robots that work in close proximity, cooperating in performing the required job. Such a collaboration, however, requires to pay attention to many aspects. Firstly, it is crucial to enable a communication between this two actors that is natural and efficient. Secondly, the robot behavior must always be compliant with the safety regulations, ensuring always a safe collaboration. In this paper, we propose a framework that enables multi-channel communication between humans and robots by leveraging multimodal fusion of voice and gesture commands while always respecting safety regulations. The framework is validated through a comparative experiment, demonstrating that, thanks to multimodal communication, the robot can extract valuable information for performing the required task and additionally, with the safety layer, the robot can scale its speed to ensure the operator's safety.

Abstract:We study a human-robot collaborative transportation task in presence of obstacles. The task for each agent is to carry a rigid object to a common target position, while safely avoiding obstacles and satisfying the compliance and actuation constraints of the other agent. Human and robot do not share the local view of the environment. The human policy either assists the robot when they deem the robot actions safe based on their perception of the environment, or actively leads the task. Using estimated human inputs, the robot plans a trajectory for the transported object by solving a constrained finite time optimal control problem. Sensors on the robot measure the inputs applied by the human. The robot then appropriately applies a weighted combination of the human's applied and its own planned inputs, where the weights are chosen based on the robot's trust value on its estimates of the human's inputs. This allows for a dynamic leader-follower role adaptation of the robot throughout the task. Furthermore, under a low value of trust, if the robot approaches any obstacle potentially unknown to the human, it triggers a safe stopping policy, maintaining safety of the system and signaling a required change in the human's intent. With experimental results, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is defined through three objectives: (i) maintenance of workers’ health; (ii) improvement of working environment and safety; and (iii) promotion of a work culture that supports health and safety. In industry, the most frequent threat to workers’ health is musculoskeletal disorders. Furthermore, even routine tasks in certain work environments (nuclear, construction, disaster response, marine, chemical, etc.) expose workers to extreme risks like explosions, contaminations, fires, confined spaces, debris, toxic gases, etc. The goal of this research is to design and develop advanced collaborative robotic technologies towards: (i) reducing workers’ physical stress and improving their health through a novel modular full-body wearable exoskeleton with arm, lower-back, and leg modules, allowing full motion dexterity; and (ii) avoiding hazard-prone worker environments and improving safety through a new collaborative master-slave teleoperation system consisting of: (a) a hydraulicallydriven, quadruped field robot with a robotic manipulator arm for operation in hazardous environments; (b) a hand exoskeleton master device for teleoperation control. The article presents the current status of development of these technologies. Preliminary validation of the exoskeleton shows reductions in muscular efforts of up to 30% for the lower back. For the master-slave collaborative system, (a) the Hydraulic Quadruped robot prototypes can traverse rough environments through capabilities that include stair climbing, walking over obstacles, omni-directional trotting with step reflexes, running, jumping, and self-righting; (b) the 7 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) manipulator arm allows object manipulation in a large workspace with dexterous grasping of up to 160 N of payload; and (c) the novel HEXOTRAC 3-digit hand exoskeleton provides high-resolution tracking of fingers and provides force feedback for intuitive bilateral teleoperation of robotic manipulators. These next-generation industrial exoskeletons and collaborative teleoperation systems can address the emerging challenges in industrial workers’ health and safety.
