Abstract:Development of sensor technology has significantly increased recently. To combat the high rates of fatalities and expenditures connected with injuries caused by traffic, sensor technology and computer vision have achieved considerable advancements. To improve road safety, an intelligent system has been created with the aim of spotting anomalies in the road and providing driving support. Utilizing a combination of accelerometer sensors, vibration motion sensors, gyroscopic sensors, and GPS technology, this system is smoothly integrated into cars. A comprehensive and evidence-based systematic review focused on Computer Vision applications for Automated Road Defect and Anomaly Detection is still lacking, despite the fact that prior studies and applications of computer vision have concentrated on particular aspects of road hazards. The system can identify several types of road irregularities based on the current location of the vehicle by using machine learning techniques to examine sensor data. Additionally, it gathers and compares data from other vehicles at the same GPS locations to confirm the presence of road problems like speed bumps or potholes. The GPS application provides access to a cloud-based repository where all the acquired data is safely kept. The technology notifies drivers ahead of time, advising them to slow down as they approach GPS spots that have previously been identified as having road abnormalities. Abstract:Road condition monitoring (RCM) has been a demanding strategic research area in maintaining a large network of transport infrastructures. With advancements in computer vision and data mining techniques along with high computing resources, several innovative pavement distress evaluation systems have been developed in recent years. The majority of these technologies employ next-generation distributed sensors and vision-based artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies to evaluate, classify and localize pavement distresses using the measured data. This paper presents an exhaustive and systematic literature review of these technologies in RCM that have been published from 2017–2022 by utilizing next-generation sensors, including contact and noncontact measurements. The various methodologies and innovative contributions of the existing literature reviewed in this paper, together with their limitations, promise a futuristic insight for researchers and transport infrastructure owners. The decisive role played by smart sensors and data acquisition platforms, such as smartphones, drones, vehicles integrated with non-intrusive sensors, such as RGB, and thermal cameras, lasers and GPR sensors in the performance of the system are also highlighted. In addition to sensing, a discussion on the prevalent challenges in the development of AI technologies as well as potential areas for further exploration paves the way for an all-inclusive and well-directed futuristic research on RCM.

Abstract:This paper explores new sensor technologies and their integration within Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) for real-time road condition monitoring. Sensors like accelerometers, gyroscopes, LiDAR, cameras, and radar that have been made available on CAVs are able to detect anomalies on roads, including potholes, surface cracks, or roughness. This paper also describes advanced data processing techniques of data detected with sensors, including machine learning algorithms, sensor fusion, and edge computing, which enhance accuracy and reliability in road condition assessment. Together, these technologies support instant road safety and long-term maintenance cost reduction with proactive maintenance strategies. Finally, this article provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art future directions of condition monitoring systems for traditional and smart roads.

Abstract:Computer vision has evolved in the last decade as a key technology for numerous applications replacing human supervision. In this paper, we present a survey on relevant visual surveillance related researches for anomaly detection in public places, focusing primarily on roads. Firstly, we revisit the surveys done in the last 10 years in this field. Since the underlying building block of a typical anomaly detection is learning, we emphasize more on learning methods applied on video scenes. We then summarize the important contributions made during last six years on anomaly detection primarily focusing on features, underlying techniques, applied scenarios and types of anomalies using single static camera. Finally, we discuss the challenges in the computer vision related anomaly detection techniques and some of the important future possibilities.

Abstract:Conventional approaches for addressing road safety rely on manual interventions or immobile CCTV infrastructure. Such methods are expensive in enforcing compliance to traffic rules and do not scale to large road networks. This paper proposes a simple mobile imaging setup to address several common problems in road safety at scale. We use recent computer vision techniques to identify possible irregularities on roads, the absence of street lights, and defective traffic signs using videos from a moving camera-mounted vehicle. Beyond the inspection of static road infrastructure, we also demonstrate the mobile imaging solution's applicability to spot traffic violations. Before deploying our system in the real-world, we investigate the strengths and shortcomings of computer vision techniques on thirteen condition-based hierarchical labels. These conditions include different timings, road type, traffic density, and state of road damage. Our demonstrations are then carried out on 2000 km of unconstrained road scenes, captured across an entire city. Through this, we quantitatively measure the overall safety of roads in the city through carefully constructed metrics. We also show an interactive dashboard for visually inspecting and initiating action in a time, labor and cost-efficient manner. Code, models, and datasets used in this work will be publicly released.
A Systematic Review of Edge Case Detection in Automated Driving: Methods, Challenges and Future Directions

Abstract:The rapid development of automated vehicles (AVs) promises to revolutionize transportation by enhancing safety and efficiency. However, ensuring their reliability in diverse real-world conditions remains a significant challenge, particularly due to rare and unexpected situations known as edge cases. Although numerous approaches exist for detecting edge cases, there is a notable lack of a comprehensive survey that systematically reviews these techniques. This paper fills this gap by presenting a practical, hierarchical review and systematic classification of edge case detection and assessment methodologies. Our classification is structured on two levels: first, categorizing detection approaches according to AV modules, including perception-related and trajectory-related edge cases; and second, based on underlying methodologies and theories guiding these techniques. We extend this taxonomy by introducing a new class called "knowledge-driven" approaches, which is largely overlooked in the literature. Additionally, we review the techniques and metrics for the evaluation of edge case detection methods and identified edge cases. To our knowledge, this is the first survey to comprehensively cover edge case detection methods across all AV subsystems, discuss knowledge-driven edge cases, and explore evaluation techniques for detection methods. This structured and multi-faceted analysis aims to facilitate targeted research and modular testing of AVs. Moreover, by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches and discussing the challenges and future directions, this survey intends to assist AV developers, researchers, and policymakers in enhancing the safety and reliability of automated driving (AD) systems through effective edge case detection.

Abstract:Traffic accident detection and anticipation is an obstinate road safety problem and painstaking efforts have been devoted. With the rapid growth of video data, Vision-based Traffic Accident Detection and Anticipation (named Vision-TAD and Vision-TAA) become the last one-mile problem for safe driving and surveillance safety. However, the long-tailed, unbalanced, highly dynamic, complex, and uncertain properties of traffic accidents form the Out-of-Distribution (OOD) feature for Vision-TAD and Vision-TAA. Current AI development may focus on these OOD but important problems. What has been done for Vision-TAD and Vision-TAA? What direction we should focus on in the future for this problem? A comprehensive survey is important. We present the first survey on Vision-TAD in the deep learning era and the first-ever survey for Vision-TAA. The pros and cons of each research prototype are discussed in detail during the investigation. In addition, we also provide a critical review of 31 publicly available benchmarks and related evaluation metrics. Through this survey, we want to spawn new insights and open possible trends for Vision-TAD and Vision-TAA tasks.

Abstract:With the increasing need for efficient traffic surveillance systems, computer vision emerges as a promising technology to address various challenges in this domain. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent advancements in the application of computer vision in traffic surveillance. It commences by discussing fundamental concepts of computer vision and its role in traffic monitoring, followed by an exploration of various techniques and algorithms used in computer vision systems, including object detection, tracking, and classification. Furthermore, it investigates the integration of computer vision with other technologies such as machine learning and deep learning, emphasizing their impact on enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of traffic surveillance systems. The review explores specific applications of computer vision in traffic surveillance, such as traffic flow monitoring, anomaly detection, and license plate recognition. Additionally, it addresses challenges and limitations associated with the implementation of computer vision in real-world traffic scenarios. Synthesizing existing literature, case studies, and research findings, this review offers a comprehensive insight into the current state-of-the-art in the application of computer vision for traffic surveillance systems. Abstract:Due to the rapid increase of the population in the world, traffic signal controlling and monitoring has become an important issue to be solved with regard to the direct relation between the number of populations and the cars’ usage. In this regard, an intelligent traffic signaling with a rapid urbanization is required to prevent the traffic congestions, cost reduction, minimization in travel time, and CO2 emissions to atmosphere. This paper provides a comprehensive review of computer vision techniques for autonomic traffic control and monitoring. Moreover, recent published articles in four related topics including density estimation investigation, traffic sign detection and recognition, accident detection, and emergency vehicle detection are investigated. The conducted survey shows that there is no fair comparison and performance evaluation due to the large number of involved parameters in the abovementioned four topics which can control the traffic signal controlling system such as (computation time, dataset availability, and an accuracy).

Abstract:Abstract: With the expansion in the number of vehicles on the road, the development of technology, and other factors, safety has elevated to the top of automotive industries. Following traffic laws and regulations are essential in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to prevent collisions. Over the past few decades, traffic sign recognition has gained significant interest due to its quick processing speed and the reduction of human interactions, which lowers risk with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence. While trying to focus on the road, drivers sometimes miss signage on the side of the road, which could be vulnerable for both them and the pedestrians. If the driver could be alerted effectively without having to change their focus, this issue may be avoided. When a sign is detected and recognised, the Traffic Sign Detection and Recognition (TSDR) system alerts the driver to any approaching signs. In addition to ensuring road safety, this also gives drivers a little more comfort while negotiating challenging or unfamiliar roads. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on traffic sign detection and recognition with details of algorithms, architectures, and methods implemented. Based on the investigation of several experts, this literature study was completed and may be used as a future reference

Abstract:The number of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) is increasing rapidly in various smart transportation services and applications, considering many benefits to society, people, and the environment. Several research surveys for CAVs were conducted by primarily focusing on various security threats and vulnerabilities in the domain of CAVs to classify different types of attacks, impacts of attacks, attack features, cyber-risk, defense methodologies against attacks, and safety standards. However, the importance of attack detection and prevention approaches for CAVs has not been discussed extensively in the state-of-the-art surveys, and there is a clear gap in the existing literature on such methodologies to detect new and conventional threats and protect the CAV systems from unexpected hazards on the road. Some surveys have a limited discussion on Attacks Detection and Prevention Systems (ADPS), but such surveys provide only partial coverage of different types of ADPS for CAVs. Furthermore, there is a scope for discussing security, privacy, and efficiency challenges in ADPS that can give an overview of important security and performance attributes. This survey paper, therefore, presents the significance of CAVs in the market, potential challenges in CAVs, key requirements of essential security and privacy properties, various capabilities of adversaries, possible attacks in CAVs, and performance evaluation parameters for ADPS. An extensive analysis is discussed of different ADPS categories for CAVs and state-of-the-art research works based on each ADPS category that gives the latest findings in this research domain. This survey also discusses crucial and open security research problems that are required to be focused on the secure deployment of CAVs in the market.

Abstract:Accident detection and traffic analysis is a critical component of smart city and autonomous transportation systems that can reduce accident frequency, severity and improve overall traffic management. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of traffic accidents in different regions across the United States using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS). To address the challenges of accident detection and traffic analysis, this paper proposes a framework that uses traffic surveillance cameras and action recognition systems to detect and respond to traffic accidents spontaneously. Integrating the proposed framework with emergency services will harness the power of traffic cameras and machine learning algorithms to create an efficient solution for responding to traffic accidents and reducing human errors. Advanced intelligence technologies, such as the proposed accident detection systems in smart cities, will improve traffic management and traffic accident severity. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into traffic accidents in the US and presents a practical solution to enhance the safety and efficiency of transportation systems.

Abstract:Automated driving can no longer be referred to as hype or science fiction but rather a technology that has been gradually introduced to the market. The recent activities of regulatory bodies and the market penetration of automated driving systems (ADS) demonstrate that society is exhibiting increasing interest in this field and gradually accepting new methods of transport. Automated driving, however, does not depend solely on the advances of onboard sensor technology or artificial intelligence (AI). One of the essential factors in achieving trust and safety in automated driving is road infrastructure, which requires careful consideration. Historically, the development of road infrastructure has been guided by human perception, but today we are at a turning point at which this perspective is not sufficient. In this study, we review the limitations and advances made in the state of the art of automated driving technology with respect to road infrastructure in order to identify gaps that are essential for bridging the transition from human control to self-driving. The main findings of this study are grouped into the following five clusters, characterised according to challenges that must be faced in order to cope with future mobility: international harmonisation of traffic signs and road markings, revision of the maintenance of the road infrastructure, review of common design patterns, digitalisation of road networks, and interdisciplinarity. The main contribution of this study is the provision of a clear and concise overview of the interaction between road infrastructure and ADS as well as the support of international activities to define the requirements of road infrastructure for the successful deployment of ADS.

Abstract:This paper reviews current developments and discusses some critical issues with obstacle detection systems for automated vehicles. The concept of autonomous driving is the driver towards future mobility. Obstacle detection systems play a crucial role in implementing and deploying autonomous driving on our roads and city streets. The current review looks at technology and existing systems for obstacle detection. Specifically, we look at the performance of LIDAR, RADAR, vision cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and IR and review their capabilities and behaviour in a number of different situations: during daytime, at night, in extreme weather conditions, in urban areas, in the presence of smooths surfaces, in situations where emergency service vehicles need to be detected and recognised, and in situations where potholes need to be observed and measured. It is suggested that combining different technologies for obstacle detection gives a more accurate representation of the driving environment. In particular, when looking at technological solutions for obstacle detection in extreme weather conditions (rain, snow, fog), and in some specific situations in urban areas (shadows, reflections, potholes, insufficient illumination), although already quite advanced, the current developments appear to be not sophisticated enough to guarantee 100% precision and accuracy, hence further valiant effort is needed.

Abstract:In Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), ensuring road safety has paved the way for innovative advancements such as autonomous driving. These self-driving vehicles, with their variety of sensors, harness the potential to minimize human driving errors and enhance transportation efficiency via sophisticated AI modules. However, the reliability of these sensors remains challenging, especially as they can be vulnerable to anomalies resulting from adverse weather, technical issues, and cyber-attacks. Such inconsistencies can lead to imprecise or erroneous navigation decisions for autonomous vehicles that can result in fatal consequences, e.g., failure in recognizing obstacles. This survey delivers a comprehensive review of the latest research on solutions for detecting anomalies in sensor data. After laying the foundation on the workings of the connected and autonomous vehicles, we categorize anomaly detection methods into three groups: statistical, classical machine learning, and deep learning techniques. We provide a qualitative assessment of these methods to underline existing research limitations. We conclude by spotlighting key research questions to enhance the dependability of autonomous driving in forthcoming studies.

Abstract:Connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are revolutionizing the development of transportation due to their potential to improve transportation performance in many ways, such as enhanced traffic mobility, road compacity, operation safety, and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, the issue of road vehicle safety in CAVs remains to be fully solved. Data collected from multiple sources provide information about the internal status of the system and the situation of its surroundings, and the occurrence of data anomalies indicates the existence of potential safety risks. Thus, anomaly diagnosis is of major importance to analyze the nature or cause of underlying safety risks and provide insightful information for the subsequent decision-making that ensures safety. Anomaly diagnosis consists of two basic tasks: anomaly detection and anomaly interpretation. In this paper, both of these two tasks are comprehensively surveyed. For anomaly detection, the following four aspects are covered: 1) formalized definition of an anomaly, 2) classification of anomalies, 3) taxonomies of anomaly detection techniques, and 4) review of recent advances for anomaly detection in CAV applications. For anomaly interpretation, related works are investigated in the context of 1) the anomaly detection process, and 2) the tested/monitored system/process, respectively. The novelty particularly lies in the latter, where the interpretation of anomalies combining the analysis of road vehicle safety risks is presented, and related works for anomaly interpretation in CAV applications are reviewed by analyzing 1) functional safety risks, 2) safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) risks, and 3) cyber security risks, respectively. Finally, open issues, challenges, future directions, and emerging technologies for anomaly diagnosis in CAVs are discussed.

Abstract:The autonomous vehicle (AVs) market is expanding at a rapid pace due to the advancement of information, communication, and sensor technology applications, offering a broad range of opportunities in terms of energy efficiency and addressing climate change concerns and safety. With regard to this last point, the rate of reduction in accidents is considerable when switching safety control tasks to machines from humans, which can be noted as having significantly slower response rates. This paper explores this thematic by focusing on the safety of AVs by thorough analysis of previously collected AV crash statistics and further discusses possible solutions for achieving increased autonomous vehicle safety. To achieve this, this technical paper develops a dynamic run-time safe assessment system, using the standard autonomous drive system (ADS), which is developed and simulated in case studies further in the paper. OpenCV methods for lane detection are developed and applied as robust control frameworks, which introduces the factor of vehicle crash predictability for the ego vehicle. The developed system is made to predict possible crashes by using a combination of machine learning and neural network methods, providing useful information for response mechanisms in risk scenarios. In addition, this paper explores the operational design domain (ODD) of the AV’s system and provides possible solutions to extend the domain in order to render vehicle operationality, even in safe mode. Additionally, three case studies are explored to supplement a discussion on the implementation of algorithms aimed at increasing curved lane detection ability and introducing trajectory predictability of neighbouring vehicles for an ego vehicle, resulting in lower collisions and increasing the safety of the AV overall. This paper thus explores the technical development of autonomous vehicles and is aimed at researchers and practitioners engaging in the conceptualisation, design, and implementation of safer AV systems focusing on lane detection and expanding AV safe state domains and vehicle trajectory predictability.
