Abstract:This paper presents the design and experiment of an autonomous underwater robot which can change the geometric configuration of its actuators, according to mission requirements or environmental constraints. The robot consists of two subsystems: forward part with three thrusters and backward part with four thrusters. The position and orientation of these thrusters can be dynamically changed during missions. Being different from most of other reconfigurable underwater robots which were designed as linked-modules, our robot has a unified design. It is suitable for specific mission in confined environments (e.g., karst exploration) in which the robot has to modify its shape to go through a narrow section or align the most part of its thrusters in the direction of a strong current, for examples. The design procedure, from hardware to software, of the robot is presented and experimental results are shown to demonstrate the versatility of the robot. Furthermore, the discussion and comparison between our robot and other underwater robots with adaptable actuation geometry are presented to highlight advantages of our design. Finally, the idea of using our robot for classic docking problem, which has some common features with karst exploration requirements in using dynamically reconfigurable robots, is discussed.

Abstract:In the realm of underwater exploration and operations, soft robots exhibit considerable application potential due to their capacity for agile and complex deformations as well as their inherent compliance. These characteristics grant them excellent environmental adaptability and reduce damage to delicate samples and organisms. Nonetheless, existing underwater soft robots are primarily designed to mimic the movements of marine organisms or for specific functions, and little attention is paid to the camouflage ability. To address these challenges, in this study, a reconfigurable transparent soft robot with variable stiffness for underwater operations is presented. The design and fabrication methodology of the robot module is presented, followed by the kinematic analysis and stiffness characterization. Leveraging the proposed robot module, a soft manipulator and a soft gripper are designed for underwater operations. The soft manipulator excels in underwater pipeline detection and obstacle avoidance, while the soft gripper showcases considerable load‐bearing capacity (about 71 times its weight), making it suitable for tasks such as retrieving aquatic biological samples or garbage fishing. The proposed reconfigurable soft robot demonstrates robust camouflage capabilities, high environmental adaptability, and notable versatility, suggesting potential solutions to existing challenges in the field of underwater exploration.
Energy-awared Diving Control for A Deep-sea Hexapod Robot

Abstract:Among various underwater robots, a deep-sea hexapod robot is able to both sail in the water and crawl on the seafloor at a large water depth. In the underwater operation process of the hexapod robot, the diving process is crucial for achieving a safe and energy efficient operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an energy-awared diving control approach for an underwater hexapod robot. This paper first presents a kinematic diving motion model and analyzes the energy consumption of the robot in the diving process. After this, an energy-awared diving control approach is proposed to partition the whole diving process into four successive parts: free diving, constant speed descent, deceleration, and free landing. Each of the four parts is with a special design for the thruster and control setting. An optimization formulation of the energy-awared diving control problem has been derived and simulation experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed diving control approach.

Abstract:This paper presents a hybrid route-path planning model for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle's task assignment and management while the AUV is operating through the variable littoral waters. Several prioritized tasks distributed in a large scale terrain is defined first; then, considering the limitations over the mission time, vehicle's battery, uncertainty and variability of the underlying operating field, appropriate mission timing and energy management is undertaken. The proposed objective is fulfilled by incorporating a route-planner that is in charge of prioritizing the list of available tasks according to available battery and a path-planer that acts in a smaller scale to provide vehicle's safe deployment against environmental sudden changes. The synchronous process of the task assign-route and path planning is simulated using a specific composition of Differential Evolution and Firefly Optimization (DEFO) Algorithms. The simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid model offers efficient performance in terms of completion of maximum number of assigned tasks while perfectly expending the minimum energy, provided by using the favorable current flow, and controlling the associated mission time. The Monte-Carlo test is also performed for further analysis. The corresponding results show the significant robustness of the model against uncertainties of the operating field and variations of mission conditions.
Dynamic Reconfiguration of Mission Parameters in Underwater Human-Robot Collaboration

Abstract:This paper presents a real-time programming and parameter reconfiguration method for autonomous underwater robots in human-robot collaborative tasks. Using a set of intuitive and meaningful hand gestures, we develop a syntactically simple framework that is computationally more efficient than a complex, grammar-based approach. In the proposed framework, a convolutional neural network is trained to provide accurate hand gesture recognition; subsequently, a finite-state machine-based deterministic model performs efficient gesture-to-instruction mapping, and further improves robustness of the interaction scheme. The key aspect of this framework is that it can be easily adopted by divers for communicating simple instructions to underwater robots without using artificial tags such as fiducial markers, or requiring them to memorize a potentially complex set of language rules. Extensive experiments are performed both on field-trial data and through simulation, which demonstrate the robustness, efficiency, and portability of this framework in a number of different scenarios. Finally, a user interaction study is presented that illustrates the gain in usability of our proposed interaction framework compared to the existing methods for underwater domains.

Sustainable Underwater Robotic Networks using Autonomous Mobile Wireless Energy Transfer

Abstract:The exploration and exploitation of ocean resources are labor-intensive and dangerous for human beings. The adoption of autonomous robots provides an efficient and safer solution. However, a single underwater robot has limited energy and communication capability which restrict its operating duration and mission range. The underwater cyber-physical system using swarm robotics is highly desirable where robots move cooperatively to accomplish tasks that cannot be done by any individual. In this paper, an autonomous mobile wireless charger is proposed to be used in order to recharge mobile robots to overcome the energy limitation and further extend the mission duration. First, the feasibility of underwater wireless energy transfer is proved and its achievable efficiency is obtained. Then, a model is developed to reveal the interplay among the communication, the wireless energy transfer, and the optimal motion control. Our results show that the trajectory tracking can significantly affect wireless energy transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the optimal trajectory for the mobile charger depends on the swarm size and dynamics.

Abstract:Advancements in underwater vehicle technology have significantly expanded the potential scope for deploying autonomous or remotely operated underwater vehicles in novel practical applications. However, the efficiency and maneuverability of these vehicles remain critical challenges, particularly in the dynamic aquatic environment. In this work, we propose a novel control scheme for creating multi-agent distributed formation control with limited communication between individual agents. In addition, the formation of the multi-agent can be reconfigured in real-time and the network connectivity can be maintained. The proposed use case for this scheme includes creating underwater mobile communication networks that can adapt to environmental or network conditions to maintain the quality of communication links for long-range exploration, seabed monitoring, or underwater infrastructure inspection. This work introduces a novel Distributed Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (DNMPC) strategy, integrating Control Lyapunov Functions (CLF) and Control Barrier Functions (CBF) with a relaxed decay rate, specifically tailored for 6-DOF underwater robotics. The effectiveness of our proposed DNMPC scheme was demonstrated through rigorous MATLAB simulations for trajectory tracking and formation reconfiguration in a dynamic environment. Our findings, supported by tests conducted using Software In The Loop (SITL) simulation, confirm the approach's applicability in real-time scenarios.

Abstract:With the development of reduced-manning and unattended offshore oil and gas fields, quadruped robots have become essential tools for monitoring unattended offshore oil platforms and reducing operational costs. However, the complexity of these platforms makes real-time generation of quadruped robot motion based on environmental information a critical issue. We propose a comprehensive perception, planning, and control pipeline to optimize the robot's motion in real-time. To enhance environmental perception, we introduce an unsupervised learning clustering algorithm. Addressing the numerical challenges of terrain, we optimize the contact surface selection problem by precomputing terrain traversability and convex hull calculations, minimizing computational workload. Concurrently, a series of contact surface constraints and foothold optimizations are approximated locally and integrated into an online model predictive controller. We solve the optimal control problem using second-order sensitivity analysis and the Enhanced Generalized Gauss-Newton (EGGN) method. Combined with a filter-based line search method, this provides better convergence performance and numerical stability. In simulations and experimental environments resembling offshore oil platforms, we validated our proposed method using the Aliengo quadruped platform. Results demonstrate that our approach can meet the challenges of offshore oil platforms, which is of significant importance for future engineering applications on unattended offshore platforms.

Abstract:Maneuverability and propulsive efficiency are of much interest in autonomous underwater robots. In this paper, we present a novel underwater robot design with two reconfigurable and detachable swimming modules that would be capable of offering both maneuverability and propulsive efficiency. They are also capable of reconfiguring automatically to take two different orientations favoring reduced drag in the swimming direction. A key feature of this design is that the reconfigurability is achieved without additional actuators - helpful in the development of autonomous swarm robots with good maneuverability and efficiency.
Efficient Deployment and Mission Timing of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles in Large-Scale Operations

Abstract:This study introduces a connective model of routing- local path planning for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) time efficient maneuver in long-range operations. Assuming the vehicle operating in a turbulent underwater environment, the local path planner produces the water-current resilient shortest paths along the existent nodes in the global route. A re-routing procedure is defined to re-organize the order of nodes in a route and compensate any lost time during the mission. The Firefly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) is conducted by both of the planners to validate the model’s performance in mission timing and its robustness against water current variations. Considering the limitation over the battery lifetime, the model offers an accurate mission timing and real-time performance. The routing system and the local path planner operate cooperatively, and this is another reason for model’s real-time performance. The simulation results confirms the model’s capability in fulfilment of the expected criterion and proves its significant robustness against underwater uncertainties and variations of the mission conditions.
An Autonomous Reactive Architecture for Efficient AUV Mission Time Management in Realistic Severe Ocean Environment

Abstract:Today AUVs operation still remains restricted to very particular tasks with low real autonomy due to battery restrictions. Efficient motion planning and mission scheduling are principle requirement toward advance autonomy and facilitate the vehicle to handle long-range operations. A single vehicle cannot carry out all tasks in a large scale terrain; hence, it needs a certain degree of autonomy in performing robust decision making and awareness of the mission/environment to trade-off between tasks to be completed, managing the available time, and ensuring safe deployment at all stages of the mission. In this respect, this research introduces a modular control architecture including higher/lower level planners, in which the higher level module is responsible for increasing mission productivity by assigning prioritized tasks while guiding the vehicle toward its final destination in a terrain covered by several waypoints; and the lower level is responsible for vehicle's safe deployment in a smaller scale encountering time-varying ocean current and different uncertain static/moving obstacles similar to actual ocean environment. Synchronization between higher and lower level modules is efficiently configured to manage the mission time and to guarantee on-time termination of the mission. The performance and accuracy of two higher and lower level modules are tested and validated using ant colony and firefly optimization algorithm, respectively. After all, the overall performance of the architecture is investigated in 10 different mission scenarios. The analyze of the captured results from different simulated missions confirm the efficiency and inherent robustness of the introduced architecture in efficient time management, safe deployment, and providing beneficial operation by proper prioritizing the tasks in accordance with mission time.

Abstract:An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) should carry out complex tasks in a limited time interval. Since existing AUVs have limited battery capacity and restricted endurance, they should autonomously manage mission time and the resources to perform effective persistent deployment in longer missions. Task assignment requires making decisions subject to resource constraints, while tasks are assigned with costs and/or values that are budgeted in advance. Tasks are distributed in a particular operation zone and mapped by a waypoint covered network. Thus, design an efficient routing-task priority assign framework considering vehicle's availabilities and properties is essential for increasing mission productivity and on-time mission completion. This depends strongly on the order and priority of the tasks that are located between node-like waypoints in an operation network. On the other hand, autonomous operation of AUVs in an unfamiliar dynamic underwater and performing quick response to sudden environmental changes is a complicated process. Water current instabilities can deflect the vehicle to an undesired direction and perturb AUVs safety. The vehicle's robustness to strong environmental variations is extremely crucial for its safe and optimum operations in an uncertain and dynamic environment. To this end, the AUV needs to have a general overview of the environment in top level to perform an autonomous action selection (task selection) and a lower level local motion planner to operate successfully in dealing with continuously changing situations. This research deals with developing a novel reactive control architecture to provide a higher level of decision autonomy for the AUV operation that enables a single vehicle to accomplish multiple tasks in a single mission in the face of periodic disturbances in a turbulent and highly uncertain environment.

Abstract:A dynamic path-planning algorithm based on a general constrained optimization problem (GCOP) model and a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method with sensor input is proposed in this paper. In an unknown underwater space, the turtle-inspired amphibious spherical robot (ASR) can realise the path-planning control movement and achieve collision avoidance. Due to the special underwater environments, thrusters and diamond parallel legs (DPLs) are installed in the lower hemisphere to realise accurate motion control. A propulsion model for a novel water-jet thruster based on experimental analysis and a modified Denavit-Hartenberg (MDH) algorithm are developed for multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) to realize high-precision and high-speed motion control. Simulations and experiments verify that the effectiveness of the GCOP and SQP algorithms can realize reasonable path planning and make it possible to improve the flexibility of underwater movement with a small estimation error.
Development of a Low Cost Multi-Robot Autonomous Marine Surface Platform

Abstract:In this paper, we outline a low cost multi-robot autonomous platform for a broad set of applications including water quality monitoring, flood disaster mitigation and depth buoy verification. By working cooperatively, fleets of vessels can cover large areas that would otherwise be impractical, time consuming and prohibitively expensive to traverse by a single vessel. We describe the hardware design, control infrastructure, and software architecture of the system, while additionally presenting experimental results from several field trials. Further, we discuss our initial efforts towards developing our system for water quality monitoring, in which a team of watercraft equipped with specialized sensors autonomously samples the physical quantity being measured and provides online situational awareness to the operator regarding water quality in the observed area. From canals in New York to volcanic lakes in the Philippines, our vessels have been tested in diverse marine environments and the results obtained from initial experiments in these domains are also discussed.
Patterns of Bovine Dairy Submissions to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System

Abstract:Dairy cattle submissions to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System (CVDLS) were analyzed to determine submitter statistics. Eligible submissions were those received July 1, 1987 through December 31, 1989 for reasons other than regulatory brucellosis serology. A comprehensive list frame of California dairies was constructed from Brucella Ring Test information and served as the comparison population for the study. Analyses were performed based on geographic location, herd size, proximity to a CVDLS laboratory, and frequency of submission. Thirty-nine percent of the 2,490 California dairies in the reference population had submitted specimens 21 time to the CVDLS during the study period. Twenty-three percent of the reference population had submitted 22 times. Specimens were more likely to be submitted from larger herds than smaller herds. Larger dairies also submitted specimens more frequently. Dairies in the northern part of the state were more likely to submit specimens and submitted more frequently than southern herds when herd size was accounted for in the analysis. Mean submission rate (&SD) for the 970 submitting dairies was 1.4 (± 1.8) submissions/year. Forty-six percent of the dairies accounted for 80% of submissions, whereas only 14% of dairies accounted for 50% of all diagnostic dairy submissions.
Node deployment optimization of underwater wireless sensor networks using intelligent optimization algorithm and robot collaboration

Abstract:This study aims to optimize the node deployment of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) using intelligent optimization algorithms and robot collaboration technology to enhance network performance and coverage. The study employs the chemical reaction optimization (CRO) algorithm, which combines the advantages of genetic algorithms, simulated annealing algorithms, and ant colony algorithms. The CRO algorithm is enhanced through a structure correction function to determine the optimal node deployment scheme to achieve effective and optimal coverage control of the UWSN. Additionally, the flexibility and autonomy of robots are leveraged to improve the efficiency of node deployment and address the unique challenges posed by the underwater environment. Furthermore, the study conducts a comparative analysis of different intelligent optimization algorithms and demonstrates the effectiveness and advantages of the enhanced CRO algorithm in optimizing node deployment for UWSNs. The study findings reveal that the improved algorithm achieves an average coverage rate of 95.66%, significantly outperforming traditional intelligent optimization algorithms. The coverage of UWSNs can be significantly improved by utilizing the enhanced CRO algorithm and robot collaboration technology for node deployment optimization, which offers an effective approach for achieving optimal node deployment. Moreover, the rational deployment of nodes enhances the monitoring capability, resource utilization efficiency, and accuracy of environmental monitoring in underwater networks. The results of this study hold great practical significance for underwater environment monitoring, marine resource exploration, and marine scientific research.

Abstract:In the face of deeply exploring and exploiting marine resources, the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) networks have drawn great attention considering its widely distributed low-cost and easy-deployment smart sensing nodes. However, given the hostile underwater environment, it is critical to conceive energy-efficient information collection because of limited underwater energy supply and inefficient artificial recharge methods. Characterized by high flexibility and maneuverability, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are regarded as a promising solution for information collection in the IoUT relying upon delicate AUVs' trajectory and information collection strategy design with the spirit of balancing their energy consumption and information processing capability. In this article, we propose a heterogeneous AUV-aided information collection system with the aim of maximizing the energy efficiency of IoUT nodes taking into account AUV trajectory, resource allocation, and the Age of Information (AoI). Moreover, based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO), we obtain the trajectory of AUVs with low time complexity. Additionally, a two-stage joint optimization algorithm based on the Lyapunov optimization is constructed to strike a tradeoff between energy efficiency and system queue backlog iteratively. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed strategy.

Abstract:This paper introduces a heuristic approach to address the operational challenges of task allocation and path planning of multiple tethered underwater robot (TUR) systems while ensuring tether entanglement avoidance. Multiple TUR systems, benefiting from bottomless power and stable communication via tethers, hold significant potential for various applications, including ecosystem exploration, infrastructure inspection, maintenance, search and rescue, underwater construction, and surveillance. However, successful operations rely on preventing tether entanglement. Our preliminary research developed a heuristic that involves task assignment and subsequent task reordering to mitigate entanglement issues. Building upon this foundation, we present a simple iterative heuristic that simultaneously allocates tasks while proactively considering potential entanglements during operations. We evaluated the proposed algorithm through simulation testing with varying problem sizes and presented the results compared with our preliminary work. The computational results demonstrate the algorithm's efficacy and potential for real-time application, offering reliable solutions within reasonable timeframes. This research contributes to advancing the field of operational research in the application of underwater robotics and holds promise for practical implementation in multiple TUR systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the first attempt at formulating the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) adaptive sampling problem considering a spatiotemporal ocean environment and energy constraints. A path re-planning system that applies fuzzy logic in decision-making is then proposed to increase the sampling efficiency and reduce power consumption to complete the mission. The goal of adaptive sampling is to plan the trajectories of gliders or AUVs to collect ocean measurements located in areas most relevant to the phenomena under investigation. However, in an actual marine environment, common conditions exist under which AUVs need to adjust their routes as the phenomena change over time. These conditions also require the monitoring of AUV energy consumption under the effect of currents that vary in space and time. This two-objective optimization problem is solved using the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm to produce a set of solutions. A new fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method, based on decision-making using fuzzy logic, is then applied to select the optimum route from the solutions by adapting and regenerating trajectories according to the ocean forecast system, analysing different scenarios, and including constraints of the total operational time and energy restrictions. Several Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance and robustness of strategies determined via FCE for various scenarios.
