Abstract:Both harmonic and binaural signal properties are relevant for auditory processing. To investigate how these cues combine in the auditory system, detection thresholds for an 800-Hz tone masked by a diotic (i.e., identical between the ears) harmonic complex tone were measured in six normal-hearing subjects. The target tone was presented either diotically or with an interaural phase difference (IPD) of 180 degree and in either harmonic or "mistuned" relationship to the diotic masker. Three different maskers were used, a resolved and an unresolved complex tone (fundamental frequency: 160 and 40 Hz) with four components below and above the target frequency and a broadband unresolved complex tone with 12 additional components. The target IPD provided release from masking in most masker conditions, whereas mistuning led to a significant release from masking only in the diotic conditions with the resolved and the narrowband unresolved maskers. A significant effect of mistuning was neither found in the diotic condition with the wideband unresolved masker nor in any of the dichotic conditions. An auditory model with a single analysis frequency band and different binaural processing schemes was employed to predict the data of the unresolved masker conditions. Sensitivity to modulation cues was achieved by including an auditory-motivated modulation filter in the processing pathway. The predictions of the diotic data were in line with the experimental results and literature data in the narrowband condition, but not in the broadband condition, suggesting that across-frequency processing is involved in processing modulation information. The experimental and model results in the dichotic conditions show that the binaural processor cannot exploit modulation information in binaurally unmasked conditions.

Maintaining acoustic communication at a cocktail party: heterospecific masking noise improves signal detection through frequency separation

Abstract:We examined acoustic masking in a chirping katydid species of the Mecopoda elongata complex due to interference with a sympatric Mecopoda species where males produce continuous trills at high amplitudes. Frequency spectra of both calling songs range from 1 to 80 kHz; the chirper species has more energy in a narrow frequency band at 2 kHz and above 40 kHz. Behaviourally, chirper males successfully phase-locked their chirps to playbacks of conspecific chirps under masking conditions at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of -8 dB. After the 2 kHz band in the chirp had been equalised to the level in the masking trill, the breakdown of phase-locked synchrony occurred at a SNR of +7 dB. The remarkable receiver performance is partially mirrored in the selective response of a first-order auditory interneuron (TN1) to conspecific chirps under these masking conditions. However, the selective response is only maintained for a stimulus including the 2 kHz component, although this frequency band has no influence on the unmasked TN1 response. Remarkably, the addition of masking noise at 65 dB sound pressure level (SPL) to threshold response levels of TN1 for pure tones of 2 kHz enhanced the sensitivity of the response by 10 dB. Thus, the spectral dissimilarity between masker and signal at a rather low frequency appears to be of crucial importance for the ability of the chirping species to communicate under strong masking by the trilling species. We discuss the possible properties underlying the cellular/synaptic mechanisms of the 'novelty detector'.
Temporary Hearing Threshold Shift in California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) Due to a Noise Band Centered at 32 kHz

Abstract:To determine their frequency-dependent susceptibility to noise-induced temporary hearing threshold shift (TTS), two California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were exposed for 60 min to a continuous one-sixth-octave noise band (NB) centered at 32 kHz as the fatiguing sound, at sound pressure levels of 132 to 156 dB re 1 μPa (sound exposure levels [SELs] of 168 to 192 dB re 1 μPa2s). Using a psychoacoustic technique, TTSs were quantified at the center frequency of the fatiguing sound and at half an octave and one octave above the center frequency (at 32, 44.8, and 63 kHz). When significant TTS occurred, higher SELs resulted in greater TTSs. TTSs and hearing recovery patterns were similar in both sea lions. The mean onset of TTS1-4 min (defined as 6 dB TTS) in sea lion F01 is estimated to occur after exposure to an SEL of 179 dB re 1 μPa2s (at hearing test frequency 44.8 kHz). After exposure to an SEL of 180 dB re 1 μPa2s, a mean TTS1-4 min of 6.7 dB was measured at hearing test frequency 44.8 kHz. In California sea lions, TTS onset levels are not as closely related (especially at the lower and higher frequencies) to the unmasked hearing thresholds (audiograms) as was previously assumed.

Major gene determination of liability to cleft lip with or without cleft palate: a multiracial view.

Abstract:Despite nearly half a century of intensive investigation, the etiology of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL +/- P) remains unknown because most studies have been descriptive rather than analytic. This study summarizes rigorous analyses of CL +/- P in the families of non-syndromic, CL +/- P surgical probands from three populations: Denmark, London, England, and Shanghai, China. Three main conclusions could be drawn from the results. The data provide no support for the multifactorial threshold model summarized by Carter (1976) and most often proposed to explain the etiology of CL +/- P. Each dataset provides evidence that there may be a major gene for liability to CL +/- P in at least a portion of cases. The data are consistent with possible genetic heterogeneity in CL +/- P.

Abstract:Auditory masking—the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli—is nearly omnipresent in daily life, and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much less studied, in large part due to the technical limitations of making such measurements. Recent work has allowed estimation of the auditory brainstem response (ABR), whose characteristic waves are linked to specific subcortical areas, to naturalistic speech. In this study, we used those techniques to measure the encoding of speech stimuli that were masked by one or more simultaneous other speech stimuli. We presented listeners with simultaneous speech from one, two, three, or five simultaneous talkers, corresponding to a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR; Clean, 0, -3, and -6 dB), and derived the ABR to each talker in the mixture. Each talker in a mixture was treated in turn as a target sound masked by other talkers, making the response quicker to acquire. We found consistently across listeners that ABR wave V amplitudes decreased and latencies increased as the number of competing talkers increased.

Abstract:Auditory stream segregation can be facilitated when the maskers share coherent amplitude modulations or by utilizing spatial cues. The effectiveness of each cue can be quantified as a decrease in masked thresholds, termed as comodulated masking release (CMR) and binaural masking level difference (BMLD). Prolonged exposure to the masker can influence following target segregation. However, the collective impact preceding noise on target segregation in the presence of comodulation and interaural phase difference (IPD) cues is unclear. Stimuli were used to induce noise streams by altering the duration and temporal coherence of the envelope of the preceding masker. The effect on following target detection with CMR and BMLD induced by an IPD of the target tone was investigated. The results indicate that the effect of the preceding stream formation on CMR operates on different time scales, extending beyond 200 ms, depending on the spectrotemporal characteristics of the maskers. However, the effect on IPD-induced BMLD was not significant across time. Under the simplifying assumption that peripheral processing operates on shorter time scales than cortical processing, the results of the present study may provide insights into auditory signal processing in the presence of beneficial cues for target stream segregation.

Does Masking Matter? Shipping Noise and Fish Vocalizations

Abstract:Shipping creates large near-field background noises at levels similar to or higher than fish vocalizations and in the same critical bandwidths. This noise has the potential to "mask" biologically important signals and prevent fish from hearing them; any interference with the detection and recognition of sounds may impact fish survival. The Lombard effect, whereby vocalizations are altered to reduce or exclude masking effects, is an adaptation that has been observed in mammals and birds. Research is needed to establish whether the Lombard effect occurs in fish to gain a better understanding of the implications of noise pollution on fish populations.

Abstract:Introduction: Hearing ability is usually evaluated by assessing the lowest detectable intensity of a target sound, commonly referred to as a detection threshold. Detection thresholds of a masked signal are dependent on various auditory cues, such as the comodulation of the masking noise, interaural differences in phase, and temporal context. However, considering that communication in everyday life happens at sound intensities well above the detection threshold, the relevance of these cues for communication in complex acoustical environments is unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of three cues on the perception and neural representation of a signal in noise at supra-threshold levels. Methods: First, we measured the decrease in detection thresholds produced by three cues, referred to as masking release. Then, we measured just-noticeable difference in intensity (intensity JND) to quantify the perception of the target signal at supra-threshold levels. Lastly, we recorded late auditory evoked potentials (LAEPs) with electroencephalography (EEG) as a physiological correlate of the target signal in noise at supra-threshold levels. Results: The results showed that the overall masking release can be up to around 20 dB with a combination of these three cues. At the same supra-threshold levels, intensity JND was modulated by the masking release and differed across conditions. The estimated perception of the target signal in noise was enhanced by auditory cues accordingly, however, it did not differ across conditions when the target tone level was above 70 dB SPL. For the LAEPs, the P2 component was more closely linked to the masked threshold and the intensity discrimination than the N1 component. Discussion: The results indicate that masking release affects the intensity discrimination of a masked target tone at supra-threshold levels, especially when the physical signal-to-noise is low, but plays a less significant role at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:The relevance of masking release by comodulation and interaural phase difference (IPD) for speech perception is still unclear. We used speech-like stimuli to link spectro-temporal properties of formants with masking release. The stimuli comprised a tone and three masker bands centered at formant frequencies F1, F2, and F3 derived from a consonant-vowel (/gu/, /fu/, and /pu/). The target was a diotic or dichotic frequency-modulated tone following F2 trajectories. Results showed no statistically significant comodulation masking release (CMR), while the binaural masking level difference (BMLD) was comparable to previous findings. The data suggest that factors other than comodulation may play a dominant role in grouping frequency components in speech.

Similar susceptibility to temporary hearing threshold shifts despite different audiograms in harbor porpoises and harbor seals

Abstract:When they are exposed to loud fatiguing sounds in the oceans, marine mammals are susceptible to hearing damage in the form of temporary hearing threshold shifts (TTSs) or permanent hearing threshold shifts. We compared the level-dependent and frequency-dependent susceptibility to TTSs in harbor seals and harbor porpoises, species with different hearing sensitivities in the low- and high-frequency regions. Both species were exposed to 100% duty cycle one-sixth-octave noise bands at frequencies that covered their entire hearing range. In the case of the 6.5 kHz exposure for the harbor seals, a pure tone (continuous wave) was used. TTS was quantified as a function of sound pressure level (SPL) half an octave above the center frequency of the fatiguing sound. The species have different audiograms, but their frequency-specific susceptibility to TTS was more similar. The hearing frequency range in which both species were most susceptible to TTS was 22.5–50 kHz. Furthermore, the frequency ranges were characterized by having similar critical levels (defined as the SPL of the fatiguing sound above which the magnitude of TTS induced as a function of SPL increases more strongly). This standardized between-species comparison indicates that the audiogram is not a good predictor of frequency-dependent susceptibility to TTS.

Abstract:Oceanic delphinids that occur in and around Navy operational areas are regularly exposed to intense military sonar broadcast within the frequency range of their hearing. However, empirically measuring the impact of sonar on the behavior of highly social, free-ranging dolphins is challenging. Additionally, baseline variability or the frequency of vocal state-switching among social oceanic dolphins during undisturbed conditions is lacking, making it difficult to attribute changes in vocal behavior to anthropogenic disturbance. Using a network of drifting acoustic buoys in controlled exposure experiments, we investigated the effects of mid-frequency (3–4 kHz) active sonar (MFAS) on whistle production in short-beaked ( Delphinus delphis delphis ) and long-beaked common dolphins ( Delphinus delphis bairdii ) in southern California. Given the complexity of acoustic behavior exhibited by these group-living animals, we conducted our response analysis over varying temporal windows (10 min– 5 s) to describe both longer-term and instantaneous changes in sound production. We found that common dolphins exhibited acute and pronounced changes in whistle rate in the 5 s following exposure to simulated Navy MFAS. This response was sustained throughout sequential MFAS exposures within experiments simulating operational conditions, suggesting that dolphins may not habituate to this disturbance. These results indicate that common dolphins exhibit brief yet clearly detectable acoustic responses to MFAS. They also highlight how variable temporal analysis windows–tuned to key aspects of baseline vocal behavior as well as experimental parameters related to MFAS exposure–enable the detection of behavioral responses. We suggest future work with oceanic delphinids explore baseline vocal rates a-priori and use information on the rate of change in vocal behavior to inform the analysis time window over which behavioral responses are measured.

Abstract:Some marine mammals can adjust acoustic parameters of their sound signals in response to changes in sunlight and ambient noise. Evidence was found in several toothed whales; however, relatively little research has focused on true seals. Spotted seals ( Phoca largha ) are highly vociferous during the breeding season. Four major underwater call types, drums, growls, knocks, and sweeps, have been identified in the acoustic repertoire of wild spotted seals in Liaodong Bay, China. This study investigated the potential effects of light (day and night) and noise (105–135 dB re 1 μPa, broadband 50–8,000 Hz) conditions on the centroid frequency (CF), root-mean-square bandwidth (BW), duration (DU), and received level (RL) parameters of their underwater vocalisations using a series of generalised linear models (GLMs). Results showed that there were significant interaction effects of light and noise on knock CFs and the BWs for all call types. Specifically, knock CFs decreased and BWs for all call types became narrower when noise increased at night but kept stable during daytime. No significant interactions were found in other acoustic parameters. However, the results of univariate GLM analyses showed that the spotted seals could lengthen their vocalisations at night and increase the vocalisation RLs in response to higher noise levels (the Lambard effect), regardless of call type. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that the spotted seals, a poorly studied species in Chinese waters, have some capabilities to adjust their vocalisations in response to changes in light and noise conditions. The results are helpful to understand how seals interact with their habitats and useful when developing mitigation strategies to minimise disturbance of light and noise from human activities in Liaodong Bay, China.

Effect of Level and Frequency of Forward Masker on Auditory Brainstem Response

Abstract:Purpose: Forward masking (FM) is characterized by the perception of a signal being reduced or wholly masked due to a preceding sound (masker) of the same or different frequencies that offers a challenge for the auditory system to resolve. Considering that the off-frequency masker is expected to undergo linear processing compared to the on-frequency masker at the signal place, it reflects the peripheral auditory systems' compressive response. Thus, the present study focused on employing FM electrophysiological analogous such as auditory brainstem responses (ABR) to the behavioral masking experiments to objectively measure the frequency and level of processing in the auditory system, from the periphery to the brainstem level. Method: The study was an observational research on 21 female volunteers. ABR was obtained using a tone-on-tone FM paradigm for 1000- and 4000-Hz probe stimuli. An experiment used two forward maskers, on-frequency and off-frequency, with varying levels from 50 to 70 dB SPL . Results: A progressive shift for V th peak latency and reduction in response amplitude was observed in proportion to the increase of masker level for both the probe stimuli and the masking experiments. However, ABR responses in neither masking condition were observed to differ between 60 and 70 dB SPL . Conclusion: FM ABR experiments are an assessment tool for estimating frequency and level processing in the auditory system, providing good efficiency, reliability, and less subject bias compared to behavioral measures.

Critical ratio and critical bandwidth for the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin

Abstract:Masked underwater pure-tone thresholds were obtained for an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin using an up–down staircase method of stimulus presentation and a go/no-go response paradigm. Two types of masking noise were used: a broadband noise and variable bandwidth noise with sharp low- and high-frequency cutoffs. The animal’s critical ratio was measured at frequencies of 30, 60, 90, 100, 110, 120, and 140 kHz. For frequencies of 100 kHz and below, the critical ratios were similar to those measured by Johnson [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 44, 965–967 (1968)]. The dolphin’s critical bandwidth at frequencies of 30, 60, and 120 kHz was measured with the variable bandwidth noise. The critical bandwidth was 10.4 dB (11 times) wider than the critical ratio at 30 kHz, 8.2 dB (6.6 times) wider at 60 kHz, and 3.5 dB (2.2 times) wider at 120 kHz.
Measuring and Modeling Cue Dependent Spatial Release from Masking in the Presence of Typical Delays in the Treatment of Hearing Loss

Abstract:In asymmetric treatment of hearing loss, processing latencies of the modalities typically differ. This often alters the reference interaural time difference (ITD) (i.e., the ITD at 0° azimuth) by several milliseconds. Such changes in reference ITD have shown to influence sound source localization in bimodal listeners provided with a hearing aid (HA) in one and a cochlear implant (CI) in the contralateral ear. In this study, the effect of changes in reference ITD on speech understanding, especially spatial release from masking (SRM) in normal-hearing subjects was explored. Speech reception thresholds (SRT) were measured in ten normal-hearing subjects for reference ITDs of 0, 1.75, 3.5, 5.25 and 7 ms with spatially collocated (S 0 N 0 ) and spatially separated (S 0 N 90 ) sound sources. Further, the cues for separation of target and masker were manipulated to measure the effect of a reference ITD on unmasking by A) ITDs and interaural level differences (ILDs), B) ITDs only and C) ILDs only. A blind equalization-cancellation (EC) model was applied to simulate all measured conditions. SRM decreased significantly in conditions A) and B) when the reference ITD was increased: In condition A) from 8.8 dB SNR on average at 0 ms reference ITD to 4.6 dB at 7 ms, in condition B) from 5.5 dB to 1.1 dB. In condition C) no significant effect was found. These results were accurately predicted by the applied EC-model. The outcomes show that interaural processing latency differences should be considered in asymmetric treatment of hearing loss.

Abstract:In a (simulated) reverberant environment, both human listeners and laboratory rats are able to perceptually integrate the direct wave of a sound source with the reflections of the source, leading to a fused image as coming from the location around the source (the precedence effect). This perceptual grouping effect produces perceived spatial separation between sound sources and facilitates selective attention to the target source. However, the neural correlates of the unmasking effects of perceived spatial separation have not been reported in the literature. The lateral nucleus of the amygdala (LA) is critical for processing ecologically salient sensory signals (e.g., threatening sounds) and mediating auditory fear conditioning. LA neuronal responses to a sound increase if the sound is fear conditioned. This study investigated whether in awake rats the perceptual fusion-induced separation between a fear-conditioned target sound and a noise masker enhances LA responses to the target. The results show that frequency-following responses (FFRs, i.e., sustained potentials based on phase-locked firing of neuron populations to periodical sound waveforms) recorded in the LA to a tone-complex, which was masked by a wideband noise, were enhanced after the tone-complex became fear conditioned. More importantly, the fear-conditioned tone-complex, but not the pseudo-conditioned tone-complex, elicited further larger LA FFRs when it was perceived as separated from the masker than when it was perceived as co-located with the masker. The results suggest that in the LA there exists a neural correlate of selective attention to ecologically significant sounds with a high degree of stimulus specificity.
Acoustic vector sensor beamforming reduces masking from underwater industrial noise during passive monitoring

Abstract:Masking from industrial noise can hamper the ability to detect marine mammal sounds near industrial operations, whenever conventional (pressure sensor) hydrophones are used for passive acoustic monitoring. Using data collected from an autonomous recorder with directional capabilities (Directional Autonomous Seafloor Acoustic Recorder), deployed 4.1 km from an arctic drilling site in 2012, the authors demonstrate how conventional beamforming on an acoustic vector sensor can be used to suppress noise arriving from a narrow sector of geographic azimuths. Improvements in signal-to-noise ratio of up to 15 dB are demonstrated on bowhead whale calls, which were otherwise undetectable using conventional hydrophones.
