Abstract:Background: Continuing professional development (CPD) and faculty development (FD) are not traditionally combined, although there is evidence that integrating them enhances knowledge acquisition. Objective: To explore preceptors' perceptions and the effectiveness of CATE (Clinical And Teaching Education), an education model that blends clinical content with the application of that clinical knowledge through a specified teaching technique. Methods: Thirty-five hospital and community pharmacy preceptors from the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, participated in CATE, which consisted of a 2-hour synchronous, online workshop integrating clinical content about depression with the "One-Minute Preceptor" (OMP) teaching skill. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected longitudinally using surveys and semistructured interviews. Participant and process outcomes were explored through descriptive and thematic analysis using a modified Kirkpatrick framework. Results: Participants valued the incorporation of educational theory and opportunities to practise the OMP using scripted role plays based on the depression-related content. The combination of FD and CPD was appealing, although participants wanted more clarity about their integration. The CATE model positively influenced their approaches to serving as preceptors, and using the OMP helped to reveal learners' knowledge gaps. There was a desire to share the teaching technique with colleagues to provide a more cohesive approach to teaching. Conclusions: Integrating CPD and FD in a synchronous, online environment was feasible and well received, and it helped to solidify preceptors' roles as educators. Combining CPD and FD represents an effective strategy to build the clinical and educational expertise of preceptors, which in turn has the potential to improve the quality of experiential learning for pharmacy students. This novel method of fostering the pedagogical growth of preceptors could be a model for other health professions.
The Status and Adequacy of Preceptor Orientation and Development Programs in US Pharmacy Schools

Abstract:Objective. To identify current preceptor orientation and development programs at US colleges and schools of pharmacy and propose future initiatives for preceptor programs. Methods. An anonymous 28-item survey was administered in January 2017 to 128 experiential education personnel at accredited US schools and colleges of pharmacy. Data from completed survey instruments were tabulated and qualitative responses to open-ended questions were examined using thematic analysis. Results. Eighty-five experiential education administrators participated in the survey (response rate=67%). Most preceptor orientation programs met the majority of requirements as outlined within the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education's Standard 20.3, although only 42% of programs mandated preceptor orientation prior to student placement. Two-thirds of respondents offered annual, live preceptor development, and 75% of programs used commercially available online products. Nearly 40% of respondents collaborated with other schools or professional organizations to offer preceptor training. Only 29% of programs had specific requirements for pharmacists to maintain their active preceptor status. Seventy percent of respondents reported spending over $2500 and 39% over $5000 annually on preceptor development. Programs with the highest monetary investment (>$10,000/year) in preceptor development offered multiple venues (live and online) for preceptor training. Programs with significant personnel commitment (≥0.5 FTE devoted to preceptor development) frequently had dedicated site visitors. Conclusion. Preceptor orientation programs at US schools of pharmacy are generally similar, but development programs vary significantly across the Academy. Highly invested programs featured live and online training or site visitors who provided individualized feedback or training. Future studies should explore the cost-effectiveness of program options and their impact on preceptor learning and behaviors.

The Impact of an Online Preceptorship Training Program on Preceptor Self-Efficacy Among Nurse Case Managers Working in an Acute Care Setting

Abstract:Purpose/objectives: The U.S. health care system is experiencing a critical workforce shortage of nurse case managers exacerbated by an older workforce and looming retirements and the growth of this specialty. This quality improvement project aimed to develop an online case manager preceptor training program and examine its impact on the nurse case manager preceptors' self-efficacy. Practice setting: This project was implemented at a 395-bed acute care, community-based hospital in the northeast. Methodology and sample: The target population for the intervention included a convenience sample of 13 nurse case managers who were assigned a preceptor role. The intervention was an abbreviated version of an online preceptorship program by Lippincott. The Preceptor Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.96, measured nurse preceptors' confidence in various skills including fostering critical thinking and providing feedback. Data from pre- and post-intervention PSEQ surveys were analyzed using a Wilcoxon rank sum test in SPSS version 28. Results: The Wilcoxon rank sum test revealed a statistically significant improvement in preceptor confidence scores ( p = .043) between pre- and post-intervention PSEQ results. Implications for case management practice: This project demonstrated feasibility of an online nurse case manager preceptor training program while also identifying improved preceptors' self-efficacy. Future research can include investigating the impact of a preceptor training program on the nurse case manager learners receiving role training from the trained case manager preceptor.
Perspectives of Professionalism, Self-Awareness, Leadership, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship From Experiential Education Preceptors

Abstract:Objective: The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the perceived importance of and comfort with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standard 4 (ACPE-S4) key elements, (2) describe how preceptors promote and assess key elements, and (3) describe preceptor perceptions of student key element skill demonstration. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional electronic survey to assess experiential education preceptors' perceptions of ACPE-S4 key elements. The survey consisted of 2 item categories, with 5 and 15 items included to collect information on preceptor demographics and ACPE-S4 key elements, respectively. Surveys were distributed to 451 introductory and advanced rotation preceptors. Frequencies and means were reported for quantitative survey items, open-ended survey responses were analyzed using a general interpretivist approach. Results: In total, 242 surveys were completed for a response rate of 54%. Most respondents identified as female (54.5%) and precepted community pharmacy rotations (28.5%). ACPE-S4 key elements, in order of most to least important, were professionalism, self-awareness, leadership, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Respondents varied in their conceptualization of key elements, with multiple activities used for skill demonstration and assessments. Qualitative analysis identified 2 themes: "Variation in preceptor fluency with S4 key elements" and "Communication as a means to demonstrate and evaluate ACPE-S4 key element skills." Conclusion: Variation among preceptors in conceptualization, learning activities, and comfort in assessment for ACPE-S4 key elements highlights the need for support and resources to assist preceptors in developing activities and assessments for skills reflective of ACPE-S4 key elements. Preceptors commonly relied on vulnerable communication with students to assess key element skills, identifying a potential target for assessment and preceptor development. Pharmacy programs, in addition to the Academy, could benefit from using assessments already offered by preceptors. Finally, explicit evaluation criteria may help to guide skill acquisition and facilitate consistent assessment of key element skills.
Pharmacist perceptions of continuing professional development and goal development in a community health-system

Abstract:Introduction: The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) defines continuing professional development (CPD) as a self-directed, ongoing, systematic, and outcomes-focused approach to lifelong learning that is applied into practice. Hospitals and health systems can use the ACPE CPD framework for performance evaluation and to support staff in developing learning goals. Methods: This was an exploratory study using cross-sectional surveys and pharmacist self-reported CPD data at a community health system in the Southeastern USA. Surveys evaluating perceived value and use of CPD were administered to pharmacists with descriptive statistics calculated for quantitative survey responses qualitative data from open-ended responses analyzed using content analysis. CPD goals within pharmacist CPD records were reviewed and categorized based on relevance to the pharmacist's current practice setting. Survey results and CPD data were compared using an integrative narrative discussion. Results: Overall, fifty-seven (33.1%) pharmacists and twelve (85.7%) pharmacy managers and directors responded to surveys. A total of 13 (22.8%) respondents strongly agreed and 21 (36.8%) respondents agreed that using CPD goals to advance their practice increased job enjoyment and 13 (22.8%) respondents strongly agreed and 30 (52.6%) respondents agreed that achievement of CPD goals resulted in improved patient care. A total of 3 (23.1%) managers or directors strongly agreed and 6 (46.2%) agreed that pharmacists are more engaged employees when they use a CPD framework to plan and achieve goals. Additionally, 3 (23.1%) strongly agreed and 7 (53.8%) agreed that using a CPD process for staff development contributed to retention. A total of 1353 CPD goals were documented by 148 pharmacists with 86.3% of goals rated as relevant to practice and 204 (15.1%) containing all specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goal components. Conclusions: The CPD framework may be a useful approach to support pharmacist development in hospital and health system settings and facilitate performance reviews.
Developing supervisory and precepting skills through simulation: Near peer teaching in a skills laboratory

Abstract:Background and purpose: Near-peer teaching is an innovative approach to teaching the skills of supervising and precepting while benefiting students with different levels of experience and academic training. This study describes near-peer activities in skills-based laboratory courses that provided opportunities for one-on-one teaching to benefit learners in the introductory lab courses while simultaneously training more advanced students for future supervisory and precepting roles. Educational activity & setting: Three community pharmacy near-peer teaching simulations were designed and implemented: 1) Patient Counseling and Medication Adherence, 2) Dispensing and Patient Counseling, and 3) Drug Utilization Review and Prescriber Calls. These activities took place over two semesters of a pharmacy skills lab with all first- and third-year Doctor of Pharmacy students. Findings: In Autumn 2019, 80% (111/139) of P1s and 67% (80/119) of P3s responded to the course evaluation survey. In Spring 2020, 73% (100/137) of P1s and 68% (80/118) of P3s responded to the course evaluation survey. The P3s reported increased confidence in their ability to provide meaningful feedback, while P1s reported increased confidence in communicating with patients and healthcare providers. Performance data revealed that most P1s and P3s completed dispensing and communication activities accurately using a near-peer approach. Overall, the P1s and P3s felt the activities were valuable learning experiences. Summary: The near-peer activities described in this study fill a gap in the training of pharmacy graduates for future precepting and supervisory roles. Evaluation of these near-peer activities suggest that both junior and senior learners benefit from simulated preceptor-intern interactions, supporting this innovative approach to address supervisory and precepting responsibilities.

Abstract:Background Clinical nursing education provides opportunities for students to learn in multiple patient care settings, receive appropriate guidance, and foster the development of clinical competence and professionalism. Nurse preceptors guide students to integrate theory into practice, teach clinical skills, assess clinical competencies, and enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Previous research has indicated that the teaching competencies of nurse preceptors can be transferred to students’ clinical learning to enhance their clinical competencies. Objective This study aimed to develop a clinical teaching blended learning (CTBL) program with the aid of web-based clinical pedagogy (WCP) and case-based learning for nurse preceptors and to examine the effectiveness of the CTBL program on nurse preceptors’ clinical teaching competencies, self-efficacies, attitudes toward web-based learning, and blended learning outcomes. Methods A quasi-experimental single-group pretest and posttest design was adopted. A total of 150 nurse preceptors participated in the CTBL program, which was conducted from September 2019 to December 2019. A set of questionnaires, including the clinical teaching competence inventory, preceptor self-efficacy questionnaire, attitudes toward web-based continuing learning survey, and e-learning experience questionnaire, was used to assess the outcomes before and after the CTBL program. Results Compared with the baseline, the participants had significantly higher total mean scores and subdomain scores for clinical teaching competence (mean 129.95, SD 16.38; P<.001), self-efficacy (mean 70.40, SD 9.35; P<.001), attitudes toward web-based continuing learning (mean 84.68, SD 14.76; P<.001), and blended learning outcomes (mean 122.13, SD 14.86; P<.001) after the CTBL program. Conclusions The CTBL program provides a comprehensive coverage of clinical teaching pedagogy and assessment strategies. The combination of the WCP and case-based approach provides a variety of learning modes to fit into the diverse learning needs of the preceptors. The CTBL program allows the preceptors to receive direct feedback from the facilitators during face-to-face sessions. Preceptors also gave feedback that the web-based workload is manageable. This study provides evidence that the CTBL program increases the clinical teaching competencies and self-efficacies of the preceptors and promotes positive attitudes toward web-based learning and better blended learning outcomes. The health care organization can consider the integration of flexible learning and intellect platforms for preceptorship education.

Medical Laboratory Sciences Preceptors: Perceptions of Benefits and Challenges in Clinical Education

Abstract:Laboratory preceptors are critical to the quality of the clinical educational experience and play a central role in developing competent future laboratory professionals. This study examined preceptor perceptions of benefits and challenges of providing clinical instruction; assessed preceptor development; and explored associations among benefits and rewards, support, development, and commitment to the preceptor role. Data were collected from preceptors across the United States using an online, self-administered, 37-item survey. From 523 preceptors contacted, 74 responded to the survey. Laboratory preceptors associated meaningful benefits and rewards with the preceptor role. Preceptors were committed to their role, but they had an overall low perception of support provided by employers and academic programs. The main challenges preceptors reported were increased workload, longer workday, and stress related to students' behavior and attitudes. Preceptors also felt inadequately developed in their role, with most having little to no knowledge of the available developmental initiatives. Lack of time was reported to be the greatest barrier to development. This study demonstrates that preceptor commitment may be increased by enhancing their development and perceptions of support. Organizations and academic programs have a collaborative role in retaining preceptor talent and increasing their commitment by effectively addressing preceptorship challenges and development.
Preceptor/mentor education: a world of possibilities through e-learning technology

Abstract:Preceptorship/mentorship is designed to socialize students into the nursing profession, promote their confidence/competence and foster their critical thinking ability. In today's global context, opportunities exist for local, rural, national and international student placements which provide exciting and mutually rewarding preceptorship experiences. Despite the recognized value of those involved in preceptorship/mentorship, however, little progress has been made regarding the development of an infrastructure that effectively supports their ongoing education. This project, piloted from October 2008 to February 2009, leveraged our established research and teaching experience in preceptorship with technologies that allowed us to create an accessible and engaging e-learning space designed to support preceptors in a seamless fashion, improve the quality of the student preceptorship and enhance professional teaching capacity. A purposive sample of 25 preceptors was selected with a total of 18 preceptors successfully completing the five month program. Upon completion, participants were surveyed and individually interviewed. Data analysis revealed the program to be informative, supportive and highly valued. Knowledge derived from this study can: a) further enrich the substantive nature and infrastructure of online preceptor education; and b) contribute to clarifying best practices for preceptor support, facilitation, and ongoing professional development with a view to enhancing the preceptorship experience.

Assessment of a Faculty and Preceptor Development Intervention to Foster Self-Awareness and Self-Confidence

Abstract:Objective. To conduct and evaluate the outcomes of a pharmacy faculty and preceptor development program to foster self-awareness and self-confidence. Methods. A faculty and preceptor development intervention was implemented in a multi-campus college of pharmacy to promote and assess for improvements in self-awareness and self-confidence. Faculty members and preceptors were surveyed regarding their self-perceptions and confidence at baseline and following an intervention in which they completed the Birkman Method self-assessment and participated in a training program with an active-learning component. A longitudinal follow-up survey was conducted to assess the long-term impacts of the intervention. Results. Faculty members and preceptors experienced significant improvements in self-awareness from baseline following the development intervention. They also experienced increases in self-confidence related to coaching. A survey evaluating the longitudinal impact of the intervention indicated a positive association between receiving a sufficient level of Birkman Method training and improved ability of both faculty members and preceptors to manage professional relationships. Similarly, a positive association was identified between the sufficiency of training and preceptors' confidence in their ability to manage personal relationships and stress following the intervention. Conclusion. Faculty members and preceptors teach students to be more self-aware and confident, yet both groups often need to grow in these areas themselves. A faculty and preceptor development intervention using the Birkman Method self-assessment is one approach to facilitating growth in these educators' self-awareness and self-confidence.
Using a Preceptor Development Series in Writing and Publication to Improve Residency Research Manuscripts

Abstract:Description of the Problem: Rates of pharmacy residency research projects making it to peer review and publication are low (between two and seven percent). Little is known about the influence of preceptor development on moving projects to peer-review and publication. The Innovation: The primary objective was to describe the effect of a preceptor development series on writing and overall manuscript quality leading to submission to a peer-reviewed publisher. Three pharmacy preceptors assigned to a post-graduate year 1 residency project were enrolled in a six-week series focused on writing, peer-reviewed publishing, and advancing resident research to publication. Each preceptor was tasked with implementing development series content in their resident research mentorship. Critical Analysis: Resident project manuscripts were assessed using a previously published 34-item evaluation tool. All papers were blinded for independent evaluation by two investigators. Nine papers were evaluated: three from preceptors who participated in the development program and six from preceptors who did not participate. The mean summary scores for papers with preceptors who participated versus those who did not were 5.8 and 5.4, respectively, on a 10-point scale. Additionally, papers from preceptor participants were noted to achieve satisfactory scores on evaluation tool items 85.3% of the time versus 74.7% of the time for non-participants. Next Steps: Participation in a six-week preceptor development program on advancing resident writing and research to publication provided preceptors the tools needed to mentor higher quality manuscripts ready for publication. Residency programs may consider designing and implementing such a series to promote preceptor and resident research publication.
Exploring the Impact of a Vicarious Learning Approach on Student Pharmacists' Professional Identity Formation Using a Simulated Pharmacist-Patient Encounter

Abstract:Purposefully developed professional identity formation (PIF) learning activities within the didactic curriculum provide crucial groundwork to complement PIF within authentic settings. The aim of this didactic exercise was to explore the impact upon student pharmacists' PIF after viewing, analyzing, and reflecting upon a simulated pharmacist-patient encounter (PPE). A 12 min role-play video was created, featuring a pharmacist counseling a standardized patient on a new medication regimen; foundational principles of medication safety, health literacy, social determinants of health, empathic communication, and motivational interviewing were included in the counseling, with some aspects intentionally performed well, others in need of improvement. Also included were the patient's varied reactions to the counseling. Students assumed the observer role and learned vicariously through viewing the PPE. Postactivity debriefs included justifying a foundational principle performed well by the pharmacist, and another in need of improvement, and a self-reflection essay expressing the impact of viewing the PPE on their PIF, from which extracts were thematically analyzed for impact. The main themes of the impact included increased awareness of counseling techniques, patient-friendly medical jargon, patient perspectives/empathy, positive and negative pharmacist role-modeling, and the value of the observer role. This PPE exercise enhanced PIF in terms of students thinking, acting, and feeling like a pharmacist, based on students' self-reflections, which most often referenced effective pharmacist-patient communication and enacting optimal patient care.
A Deeper Reflection on the Integration of the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process

Abstract:Objective: Given the importance of developing student understanding and application of the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process (PPCP), programs may be able to use successful approaches from other institutions to enhance their curricular and experiential learning and assessment of student outcomes. The study objective was to explore successful methods of integrating the PPCP and outline areas of challenge. Methods: This study used a qualitative study design with semistructured interviews to gain insight from participants' lived experiences. Pharmacy faculty members participating in a national survey or who were authors of articles about PPCP initiatives were recruited to provide greater detail about building successful and innovative curricula. Thematic analysis identified commonalities and differences among the interviewed participants. Results: A total of 10 interviews were conducted. The following 4 overarching themes arose from the data: discussions around intentional integration of the PPCP across multiple core courses may foster innovations in teaching strategies; intentional integration alone does not equate to PPCP integration across the curriculum; intentional integration may enhance program assessment; and PPCP data from experiential coursework may not be widely used in curricular continuous quality improvement. Conclusion: Pharmacy programs will ideally involve the entire faculty, including experiential and basic and social/administrative science members, in weaving the PPCP throughout the curriculum. Rigorous assessment can better inform interventions related to student competency in various steps of the PPCP. Pharmacy programs should also clarify how data obtained from preceptors observing student performance in each of the PPCP steps are used to assess student mastery of this critical skill.
Teaching Clinical Precepting: A Faculty Development Workshop Using Role-Play

Abstract:Introduction: Precepting is when a medical educator listens to a learner's presentation and must teach and assess the learner while rendering safe patient care. A popular framework for this type of educational encounter is the one-minute preceptor model, which can work for learners at all skill levels. This workshop was created to develop skills of all teaching faculty, regardless of medical specialty, in precepting.Methods: The workshop is based on Kolb's experiential learning theory. A PowerPoint presentation delivers the core abstract concepts. The PowerPoint allows for discussion of participants' prior precepting experiences, including both challenges and successes. The workshop ends with role-plays for participants to practice their skills and a facilitated debrief to aid individual reflection. Twelve role-plays were created for use in the workshop; these were then reviewed by someone in the matching specialty to enhance authenticity. Participants completed a survey after the workshop to evaluate the session.Results: This presentation was delivered 26 times to 392 participants at 16 different teaching hospitals. Twenty-one different medical specialties and subspecialties were represented. Ninety-seven percent of participants stated they would use the information presented in the workshop often or daily. There were conflicting comments about the role-plays. The negative comments centered around (a) personal difficulty participating in the role-plays and (b) the role-plays not being related to the learning.Discussion: Discussion and role-play can be an effective way to instruct educators in use of the one-minute preceptor as a framework for teaching.
Perceived Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) During COVID-19: CPD Providers' Perspectives

Abstract:COVID-19 precipitated many CPD providers to develop new technology competencies to create effective online CPD. This study aims to improve our understanding of CPD providers' comfort level, supports, perceived advantages/disadvantages, and issues in technology-enhanced CPD delivery during COVID-19. A survey was distributed to CPD providers at the University of Toronto and members of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Of the 111 respondents, 81% felt very to somewhat confident to provide online CPD, but less than half reported IT, financial, or faculty development supports. The top reported advantage to online CPD delivery was reaching a new demographic; top disadvantages included videoconferencing fatigue, social isolation, and competing priorities. There was interest in using less frequently used educational technology such as online collaboration tools, virtual patients, and augmented/virtual reality. COVID-19 precipitated an increased comfort level in using synchronous technologies to provide CPD, giving the CPD community an increased cultural acceptance and skill level to build on. As we move beyond the pandemic, it will be important to consider ongoing faculty development, particularly toward asynchronous and HyFlex delivery methods to continue expand CPD reach and negate negative online experiences such as videoconferencing fatigue, social isolation, and online distractions.
Impact of a Geriatric Pharmacy Elective on Student Knowledge, Attitudes, and Empathy Regarding Older Adults

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the impact of a Geriatric Pharmacy elective on pharmacy students' knowledge, attitudes, and empathy regarding older adults. Methods: Enrolled students in a 15-week Geriatric Pharmacy elective during 3 consecutive academic years were invited to complete a precourse and postcourse survey. The survey consisted of the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz, the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale, the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale, and demographic questions. The presurvey and postsurvey data were compared and the impact of demographic factors on student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy was assessed in an exploratory analysis. Results: Sixty-six students participated in the study. Scores on the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz and the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale increased significantly postsurvey compared with presurvey. Student scores on the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale increased on the postsurvey compared with the presurvey, but this increase was not statistically significant. Student self-reported experience with older adults, race, and the course year impacted student performance. Conclusion: A geriatric elective positively impacted the students' knowledge and attitudes toward older adults. Future research should include validity and reliability testing of geriatric assessment scales in a diverse student population to ensure effective assessment of student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy in this patient population.
Focused Preceptor Feedback Assessing Student Pharmacists' Ability to Administer Pediatric Immunizations

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate experiential pharmacy preceptor perceptions of student pharmacists' ability to administer pediatric immunizations. Methods: Semi-structured, qualitative key informant interviews using the Outcomes Evaluation Framework were conducted with 10 pharmacist preceptors in outpatient community pharmacies where pediatric immunizations were provided. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and deidentified prior to analysis by the research team. Qualitative analysis and thematic coding procedures were used to identify relevant themes. Results: Saturation was met after 10 pharmacists participated. All stated that it was beneficial for student pharmacists to administer pediatric vaccines if trained in proper technique. Participants acknowledged that the training students currently receive in immunization administration within the PharmD curriculum is valuable but did identify general confidence and child-comforting techniques during and after vaccination as areas of improvement for students. Just-in-time training, preceptor coaching, and hands-on practice outside of the didactic curriculum were utilized to help build confidence. Barriers to the implementation or expansion of pediatric immunization delivered by students in community pharmacies were identified as competing priorities, time, and reimbursement. Conclusion: Student pharmacists can be helpful in easing the challenges of incorporating pediatric immunization services into the community pharmacy setting. Results demonstrate that the integration of student pharmacists into these services is beneficial. Pediatric immunizations are still relatively new to many pharmacists and specific training for pediatric immunization administration may not be integrated into all Doctor of Pharmacy curricula but the experiential education of pediatric immunization training can be beneficial to help prepare student pharmacists for hands-on practice.

Abstract:Continuing professional development is a lifelong process that is multifaceted, holistic, self‐directed, and is not a replacement for continuing education. Through ongoing professional development, pharmacists can improve their skill set in a broad range of clinical, educational, research, and administrative activities. Not only does development of this growth benefit the individual pharmacist, but also the institution and pharmacy profession. In 2020, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists published an updated position paper on critical care pharmacy services. A new recommendation in the update was to create mechanisms for critical care pharmacists to develop their career and professional development. Herein, we describe our experience with the development and implementation of a critical care pharmacy career professional development program using peer‐to‐peer coaching within a large academic medical center. Professional development is not a one size fits all and should be individualized. We initially focused on developing research skills based on initial surveys. Afterwards professional development was varied we created new resources such as journal referee “how‐to” and teaching in a flipped classroom.
Integrating Health Literacy and Cultural Competency Concepts Across the Doctor of Pharmacy Curriculum

Abstract:Objective. To determine the longitudinal impact of integrating health literacy and cultural competency content throughout the professional pharmacy curriculum and the impact of additional changes made to the curriculum based on the results of a longitudinal analysis. Methods. Health literacy and cultural competency concepts were integrated throughout a four-year professional pharmacy curriculum. A cohort of students were assessed using health literacy and cultural competency survey instruments at baseline, the end of the fall semester of the first professional (P1) year, and the end of each subsequent academic year. From the four-year assessment, a need for additional reinforcement in the spring P1 semester was identified, so a health literacy activity was incorporated into an introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) for two cohorts of students. The outcomes were compared to those of a single cohort of students who had completed their P1 year prior to integration of the additional content. A health literacy survey instrument was given at the beginning and after completion of the semester to assess change. Preceptors also completed a brief survey. Results. Curricular integration improved health literacy and cultural competency attitudes and self-perceived ability in P1 students, as assessed by the instruments. However, declines in students' health literacy and cultural competency were identified when the students were retested in the spring semester. After implementing the health literacy IPPE activity, the health literacy scores of P1 students in the two subsequent years improved. Preceptors also gave positive feedback on the utility of this activity. Conclusion. Integrating health literacy and cultural competency content throughout the curriculum resulted in improvement in students' scores in these areas from the first to the fourth professional year, but when there were no integrated activities, scores dropped. Implementing additional activities improved student-perceived HL skills. Thus, it may be important to ensure there is inclusion of content in each semester of the curriculum to maximize effects.
