Influence of the Ratio of Peripheral Hemoglobin-to-Red Cell Distribution Width on the Prognosis of Patients with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the influence of peripheral hemoglobin (Hb)-to-red cell distribution width (RDW) ratio (HRR) on the prognosis of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).METHODS:Data of 265 patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) at the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from January 2014 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. 132 healthy people in the same period were used as normal control group. The best cut-off points of HRR was determined by receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve; the chi-square test was used to analyze the correlation of clinical characteristics with HRR; the Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of HRR patients in different groups; the Cox proportional risk model was used for univariate and multivariate analysis.RESULTS:The best cut-off value of HRR was 0.936, which was divided into low HRR group and high HRR group. The low HRR group had a higher ECOG score, higher incidence of advanced Ann Arbor stage, higher NCCN-IPI score, and elevated LDH level. K-M survival analysis showed that OS (P<0.001) and PFS (P<0.001) in the low HRR group were significantly shorter than that in the higher HRR group. The multivariate analysis revealed that HRR was an independent predictor of OS（HR＝0.379，95％CI：0.237-0.605，P<0.001） and PFS （HR＝0.384，95％CI：0.241－0.614，P<0.001） in DLBCL patients.CONCLUSION:Low HRR（<0.936） in patients with DLBCL indicates a poor prognosis, which is an independent prognosis risk factor.

Abstract:The aim of the current research was to investigate the prognostic significance of pretreatment hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and HRR were analyzed retrospectively to assess their prognostic value using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analysis in 198 patients with RCC. High HRR (0.72) and high LMR (2.43) were found to be associated with longer progression-free survival and overall survival. A multivariate analysis identified International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium prognostic score, tumor stage, node stage, LMR and HRR as independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival, as well as International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium score, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and HRR for overall survival. HRR is a an independent prognostic parameter predicting the progression and survival of patients with RCC.
Evaluation of the prognostic utility of the hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio in head and neck cancer

Abstract:Purpose: Hemoglobin is a known prognostic marker in many cancers, including head and neck cancer (HNC). There is some evidence that the red cell distribution width, which is an index of variation in size of red blood cells (RBCs), might be associated with prognosis as well. Recently, a novel prognostic biomarker has been reported-the ratio of the hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width (Hb/RDW). Our objective was to evaluate the prognostic utility of the pretreatment Hb/RDW in HNC, controlled with known prognostic indices. Methods: Retrospective cohort study in a tertiary academic hospital setting. Patients diagnosed with HNC treated with curative-intent surgery were eligible. Metastatic disease was excluded. The variables collected were age, sex, BMI, alcohol/tobacco exposure, performance scores, ACE-27, tumor characteristics, adjuvant treatment, and lab values. The primary endpoints were event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS). OS was defined as time from start of treatment to death from any cause, and EFS was defined as time from start of treatment to any progression, recurrence, or death from any cause. Univariate and multivariate survival analysis was performed on the primary endpoints. Results: A total of 205 patients were enrolled from 2010 to 2016. In multivariate analysis, the factors independently associated with EFS were BMI (p = 0.0364), advanced T stage (p = 0.001), and low Hb/RDW ratio (p = 0.017). The factors independently associated with OS were ECOG score (p = 0.042), advanced T stage (p < 0.0001), positive nodes (p = 0.0195), and Hemoglobin (0.0134). Conclusion: A low Hb/RDW ratio was associated with poorer EFS (HR = 2.02, 95% CI 1.13-3.61, p = 0.017), but was not associated with OS. This is the first study reporting the prognostic utility of Hb:RDW in head and neck cancer.

Abstract:The carboxyl-terminal cytoplasmic domain of human tissue factor (the essential cofactor for coagulation factor VII) is a prospective regulatory domain through which viable cells may control the expression of tissue factor activity. Furthermore, this domain is subject to post-translational modifications of as yet unknown functional significance. Hybridomas producing antibodies against the C-terminal domain of tissue factor were obtained using splenocytes harvested from mice immunized with a synthetic peptide corresponding to the nine terminal residues of the protein sequence. These antibodies, C28 1.1 and C28 2.1, react with purified placental tissue factor, but not with a recombinant soluble tissue factor lacking the cytoplasmic and membrane-spanning domains. This confirms that tissue factor from biological membranes contains the entire cytoplasmic domain predicted from the cDNA sequence, and provides a mechanism to determine whether tissue factor used experimentally retains this proteolytically sensitive epitope. The antibodies have been employed to demonstrate selective proteolytic removal of the carboxyl-terminal peptide from tissue factor. Limited experiments indicate that they will be useful for characterizing the distribution of vesicles with regard to the possible orientations of tissue factor on their surface.

Abstract:The prognostic value of peripheral blood hemoglobin/red blood cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between peripheral blood HRR and the prognosis of CRC. A retrospective study analyzed the medical records of 284 CRC patients who attended Linyi People Hospital between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2021. The optimal diagnostic cutoff value for hemoglobin (Hb)/erythrocyte distribution width was determined by ROC curve as 3.098, and patients were divided into high- and low-level groups for comparative analysis of clinical data. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis, and logrank test was used to assess survival differences. In univariate and multifactorial analyses, Cox proportional risk regression models were used to assess independent risk factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). All statistical tests were bilateral probability tests with α = 0.05, and P < .05 was considered statistically significant. There were 284 patients who were finally included in the statistical analysis. Gender, tumor stage, Hb, platelets, and CEA were associated with PFS and OS. Tumor stage, Hb, and HRR (P < .05) were independent risk factors for PFS and OS. Low-level HRR was associated with poor patient prognosis. Low-level HRR is associated with poor patient prognosis and is a potential tumor prognostic marker.

Abstract:Background: Although the absolute number of postoperative positive lymph nodes has been considered as one of the most important predictors for the survival of rectal cancer patients, many researchers have suggested that the lymph node ratio (LNR) may have a better predictive effect. After chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer, the number of lymph nodes harvested is often reduced, and the predictive value of the postoperative LNR after chemoradiotherapy is still unclear. We performed a retrospective study to analyze the survival predictive value of the LNR after preoperative chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer. Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2014, a total of 133 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who underwent preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by total mesorectal excision were reviewed. According to the postoperative pathological LNR, patients were divided into 3 groups, i.e., LNR = 0, 0 < LNR <= 0.15, and 0.15 < LNR <= 1, and patients with lymph node metastasis were divided into 2 groups, and the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of each group were analyzed and evaluated. Results: The median follow-up time of this study was 40 months, and the 5-year OS and DFS rates were 86.3% and 74.8% for the whole cohort, respectively. According to the postoperative pathological LNR, patients were divided into 3 groups, LNR = 0, 0 < LNR <= 0.15, 0.15 < LNR <= 1, the respective 5-year OS and DFS rates for the LNR 3 groups were 96.7%, 94.7% and 42.9% (P < 0.001) and 84.9%, 73%, and 30.7% (P < 0.001), respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that only the LNR was the independent prognostic factor for these patients. For patients with lymph node metastasis, it was also revealed that only the LNR was an independent prognostic factor. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that there was a significant correlation between the LNR and patient survival both in the number of lymph nodes harvested, less than 12 and more than 12 subgroups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The postoperative positive lymph node ratio (LNR) is an independent prognostic factor for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who undergo preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by total mesorectal excision. Both in the number of lymph nodes harvested less than 12 and more than 12 subgroups, the LNR is significantly correlated with patient survival.

Abstract:It is not clear whether arterial grafts should be used for emergency or urgent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) because harvest of internal thoracic arteries (ITAs) is not easy under urgent conditions and the blood flow through the ITAs may be inadequate immediately after CABG. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the use of arterial grafts in urgent CABG affects the outcome adversely or not. Twenty consecutive patients who underwent urgent CABG within 48 hours following coronary angiography at our institute between July 1991 and October 1998 were reviewed. The patients who underwent CABG with associated procedures were excluded. Among these subjects, 11 patients received at least one arterial graft. Only 1 patient died of subarachnoidal hemorrhage, and the hospital mortality rate was 5.0%. According to the overall survival rate, cardiac-death-free rate, and cardiac-event-free rate, the long-term outcome was much better in the patients with arterial grafts than those with saphenous vein grafts alone. We suggest that arterial grafts should be used even for urgent CABGs since the use of arterial grafts may not affect operative results adversely and will confer better long-term benefits.
The pre-treatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and red cell distribution width predict prognosis in patients with laryngeal carcinoma

Abstract:The aim of this study was to identify the potential prognostic roles of the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and red cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). 81 patients who underwent surgery for the larynx carcinoma were enrolled in the study. NLR, PLR and RDW were used as outcome measures. Local recurrence was detected in 30 (37.0 %) patients and neck lymph node metastasis was detected 6 (7.4 %) patients during follow-up period. Mortality was seen in 7 (8.6 %) patients. The mean PLR in the T1 and T2 stage tumors were significantly lower than the T4 stage. The mean RDW and PLR were significantly higher in the exitus group than the survivor group. The mean NLR in the patients with local recurrence was significantly higher than the non-recurrent patients. Progression-free survival (PFS) was lower in patients with high NLR. When analyzed by the Cox regression analysis of factors affecting the local recurrence, NLR was found to significantly affect the recurrence. According to ROC analysis for mortality, NLR was not found to be a prognostic factor, although the PLR and RDW were significant prognostic factors. According to Cox regression analysis, a high PLR increases mortality 4.2 times and a high RDW 4.6 times. Although in univariate analysis MCV, RDW and tumor grade were predictors of mortality, RDW and tumor grade independent predictors were found. Further studies involving large patient groups are required.

Abstract:Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been recently demonstrated to be a predictor of inflammation.High pretreatment RDW level is associated with poor survival outcomes in various malignancies, although the results are controversial.We aimed to investigate the prognostic role of RDW.A systematic literature search was performed in MEDLINE and EMBASE till April 2018.Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated for overall survival (OS) and combined disease-free survival, progression-free survival, and recurrence-free survival (DFS/PFS/RFS).49 studies with 19,790 individuals were included in the final analysis.High RDW level adversely affected both OS and DFS/PFS/RFS.For solid cancers, colorectal cancer (CRC) had the strongest relationship with poor OS, followed by hepatic cancer (HCC).Negative OS outcomes were also observed in hematological malignancies.Furthermore, patients at either early or advanced stage had inverse relationship between high pretreatment RDW and poor OS.Studies with cut-off values between 13% and 14% had worse HRs for OS and DFS/PFS/RFS than others.Furthermore, region under the curve (ROC) analysis was used widely to define cut-off values and had relatively closer relationship with poorer HRs.In conclusion, our results suggested that elevated pretreatment RDW level could be a negative predictor for cancer prognosis.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of baseline and posttreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) receiving chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Material and methods: Ninety-two HNSCC patients who received adjuvant or primary radiotherapy (RT) between September 2014 and December 2019 were assessed retrospectively. Surgery was performed on 24 (26.1%) patients. Eight patients (8.7%) received induction chemotherapy (CT), 63 patients (68.5%) concomitant CT and 17 (19.5%) patients received adjuvant CT. Results: The median follow-up time was 19 months (range 1-61 months). The median overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 16 and 13 months, respectively. High baseline NLR level was found to be significantly associated with advanced T stage. Survival was significantly poor if baseline NLR cut-off was above 2.7. No significant correlation was revealed between post-RT NLR, baseline PLR and post-RT PLR and OS. Advanced T stage, presence of metastasis and high post-RT PLR were found to be significant factors that decrease PFS. Conclusion: High baseline NLR level in HNSCC receiving CRT/RT was strongly associated with advanced T stage and poor prognosis. However, well designed, larger studies with longer follow-up are warranted.

Abstract:Background: Lymphocytes, neutrophils, and monocytes are vital effector cells in innate immunity. We postulated that lymphocyte to red blood cell ratio (LRR), neutrophil to red blood cell ratio (NRR), monocyte to red blood cell ratio (MRR) could represent the intensity of systemic inflammatory immunological reaction reflected through the lymphocyte, neutrophil and monocyte respectively. This study aimed to access the predictive and prognostic value of LRR, NRR, MRR and LRR-NRR-MRR score for locally advanced breast cancer. Methods: A total of 137 patients from two clinical trials SHPD002 and SHPD003 were included. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between ratios and pathological complete response (pCR). Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method and cox regression analysis. Results: Lower LRR-NRR-MRR score (OR=0.593; 95% CI: 0.369-0.954; P=0.031) was more easily to achieve pCR in multivariate analysis. Lower LRR (P=0.022), NRR (P=0.027) and MRR (P=0.024) were significantly associated with better DFS. LRR-NRR-MRR score was an independently prognostic factor for both DFS (HR=3.318; 95% CI: 1.601-6.876; P=0.001) and OS (HR=3.160; 95% CI: 1.030-9.696; P=0.044). Conclusions: The LRR-NRR- MRR score could be identified as a new predictive biomarker for the therapeutic effect of neoadjuvant therapy and an independent prognostic factor for both DFS and OS for locally advanced breast cancer.
Correlation of Microscopic Structure of Corn Starch Granules with Rheological Properties of Cooked Pastes

Abstract:The progressive geometric changes that occur in swelling of corn starch granules during heating throughout the range of gelatinization (63-72°C) and at higher temperatures when substantial amount s o f soluble starch are released from the granule were observed by scanning electron micro s copy (SEM). Corn starch granules beg in to swell radially, then undergo radial contraction and random tangentia l expansion. They f orm complex geome trica l structures at the midpoint range (67-70°C) unlike the more uni f orm s ingle-dimensional tangential swelling that occurs with lenticular granules of wheat s t arch . At higher temperatures, when starch begins to solubilize, corn s tarch granules los e the ir distinct ridges and appear to melt into thin flat disks. These progressive configurational changes are reflected in the rheological proper ties of more concentrated s t arch dispersions cooked for 75 minut es . At the earl y stages of gelatinization (6 3-65 °C ) the granules are r e l a tive l y rigid and at high e nough concentration shovv dilatant behavior (viscosity increasing with shear rate). At these t emperatures, granules r emain rigid and maintain their birefringence but are mechanically s h eared by s tirrin g during cookin g . Once the granules undergo ex tensive swelling, develop ridges, and los e their birefringence (67-70°C), they are soft enough to exhibit shear thinning behavior (viscosity decreasing with shear rat e ). The extent of shear thinning d epends on concentration, b e cause viscosity and shear s tress increase with concentration and the granules become more susceptible to d eformation. At high enough concentrations (and associated s t resses), the ridges are not as clearly defined as they are at lower conc entrations . Granules become more flat and flexible when cooked above 75°C. A Single Center Retrospective Study Assessing the Prognostic Significance of Pre-Treatment Neutrophil/lymphocyte Ratio in Locally Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract:Background: In light of the growing evidence suggesting the impact of inflammatory parameters on the survival of individuals with cancer, this research assessed the prognostic significance of the neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio (NLR) in individuals diagnosed with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) prior to undergoing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).Methods: A total of 163 individuals diagnosed with locally advanced NPC treated with IMRT at our hospital between January 2012 and December 2017 were included in this research. For each patient, the absolute counts of neutrophils and lymphocytes were recorded, and the NLR was calculated at the first diagnosis. To determine the optimal cut-off values for NLR, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted. The effects of the determined cut-off value on local failure-free survival (LFFS), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and distant failure-free survival (DFFS) were evaluated employing the Cox regression model.Results: The median follow-up duration for the individuals in this study was 15 months (ranging from 6 to 79 months). According to the determined NLR cut-off value of 3.27, individuals were classified into two groups (high NLR and low NLR). Individuals in the high-NLR group had remarkably poorer 3-year OS (62.8% vs. 91.7%), PFS (51.4% vs. 82.4%), and DFFS (70.7% vs. 89.6%) compared to the low-NLR group. Furthermore, the outcomes of univariate and multivariate survival analyses revealed that NLR served as an independent predictor of DFFS (HR: 2.81, 95% CI: 1.195-6.608, P=0.018), OS (HR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.211- 7.935, P=0.018), and PFS (HR: 2.21, 95% CI: 1.133-4.292, P=0.02).Conclusions: Elevated NLR exhibited a significant correlation with reduced OS, DFFS, and PFS. These findings suggest that NLR holds promise as a cost-effective and reliable marker for the prediction of clinical outcomes among patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC). Furthermore, incorporating NLR into clinical decision-making regarding LANPC treatment strategies may contribute to a more targeted approach aimed at reducing the risk of distant failure.

Abstract:The high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard has significantly improved compression performance for many applications, including remote desktop and desktop sharing. Screen content video coding is widely used in applications with a high demand for real-time performance. HEVC usually introduces great computational complexity, which makes fast algorithms necessary to offset the limited computing power of HEVC encoders. In this study, a statistical analysis of several screen content sequences is first performed to better account for the completely different statistics of natural images and videos. Second, a fast coding unit (CU) splitting method is proposed, which aims to reduce HEVC intra coding computational complexity, especially in screen content coding. In the proposed scheme, CU size decision is made by checking the smoothness of the luminance values in every coding tree unit. Experiments demonstrate that in HEVC range extension standard, the proposed scheme can save an average of 29% computational complexity with 0.9% Bjøntegaard Delta rate (BD-rate) increase compared with HM13.0+RExt6.0 anchor for screen content sequences. Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for 85% of all lung cancer cases. Inflammation has been proven to be one of the characteristics of malignant tumors. Chronic inflammatory response mediated by cytokines in the tumor microenvironment is an important factor in tumorigenesis. The purpose of this study was to observe and evaluate the value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and hemoglobin-to-red blood cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in the progression of NSCLC.A total of 245 patients with NSCLC, 97 patients with benign pulmonary nodules, and 94 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Factors, such as age, gender, smoking history, histological type, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage, and differentiation degree were statistically analyzed. The correlation of RDW, NLR, and HRR of patients with NSCLC with other clinical experimental parameters were also analyzed. Then, the diagnostic value of RDW, NLR, and HRR in the progression of NSCLC was evaluated.RDW, NLR, and HRR could be used to distinguish patients with NSCLC from healthy controls (p < 0.05). In addition, only the RDW in the NSCLC group with III-IV stage was significantly different from that in the benign pulmonary nodules group (p = 0.033), while NLR and HRR could significantly distinguish patients with NSCLC and benign pulmonary nodules (p < 0.001). RDW and NLR were positively correlated with NSCLC stage, whereas HRR was negatively correlated with NSCLC stage. RDW, NLR, and HRR were also significantly associated with the differentiation degree of NSCLC (p < 0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed that the combination of RDW with NLR, HRR, and CEA could show significantly higher diagnostic value than any one marker alone (AUC = 0.925, 95% CI: 0.897–0.954, and sensitivity and specificity of 79.60% and 93.60%, respectively).RDW, NLR, and HRR can be utilized as simple and effective biomarkers for the diagnosis and evaluation of NSCLC progression.

Abstract:Background: Although the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been reported as a reliable predictor of prognosis in several types of cancer, the prognostic value of RDW in hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HC) has not been studied. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 292 consecutively recruited HC patients undergoing radical resection was conducted. The optimal cutoff value of RDW was determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Survival analysis by the Kaplan-Meier method, the difference between the clinico-pathologic variables and survival were evaluated by log-rank analysis. Multivariate analysis identified independent prognostic risk factors of overall survival (OS). Results: ROC analysis suggested that the optimal cutoff value for the RDW was 14.95. Linear correlation analysis revealed that RDW is associated with white blood cell count (P = 0.007), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (P = 0.02), and hemoglobin (P < 0.001), albumin (P < 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, the RDW was an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR = 1.755, 95% CI 1.311-2.349, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Elevated RDW may be regarded as an indicator of systemic inflammatory response which might facilitate HC growth and metastasis. Current evidence suggests that RDW may have clinical significance in predicting OS after surgery in HC patients.
