Abstract:Abstract. Most megawatt-scale wind turbines align themselves into the wind as defined by the wind speed at or near the center of the rotor (hub height). However, both wind speed and wind direction can change with height across the area swept by the turbine blades. A turbine aligned to hub-height winds might experience suboptimal or superoptimal power production, depending on the changes in the vertical profile of wind, or shear. Using observed winds and power production over 6 months at a site in the high plains of North America, we quantify the sensitivity of a wind turbine's power production to wind speed shear and directional veer as well as atmospheric stability. We measure shear using metrics such as α (the log-law wind shear exponent), βbulk (a measure of bulk rotor-disk-layer veer), βtotal (a measure of total rotor-disk-layer veer) and rotor-equivalent wind speed (REWS), a measure of actual momentum encountered by the turbine by accounting for shear). We also consider the REWS with the inclusion of directional veer, REWSθ, although statistically significant differences in power production do not occur between REWS and REWSθ at our site. When REWS differs from the hub-height wind speed (as measured either by the lidar or a transfer function-corrected nacelle anemometer), the turbine power generation also differs from the mean power curve in a statistically significant way. This change in power can be more than 70 kW, or up to 5 % of the rated power for a single 1.5-MW utility-scale turbine. Over a theoretical 100-turbine wind farm, these changes could lead to instantaneous power prediction gains or losses equivalent to the addition or loss of multiple utility-scale turbines. At this site, REWS is the most useful metric for segregating the turbine's power curve into high and low cases of power production when compared to the other shear or stability metrics. Therefore, REWS enables improved forecasts of power production.

Abstract:The wake effect reduces the total power production of wind farms. This paper presents a method for wind farm power optimization through wake effect reduction. The proposed method optimizes the yaw angle offsets and derating settings of all turbines to maximize total power generation. The optimization approach is gradient-based, with gradients at each iteration obtained through system identification using field test data, eliminating the need for physical models. In system identification, test signal design, model estimation and model validation problems are solved in a systematic manner; in the gradient-based optimization, in order to achieve fast convergence, methods for initial value and initial step-size determination, variable step-size iteration and iteration termination are developed. The method is verified using the FLORIS wind farm model developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USA. The studied wind farm consists of 80 wind turbines configured similarly to the Horns Rev I offshore wind farm in Denmark. The result of the developed optimization method is highly consistent with those obtained using FLORIS's built-in optimization tool.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of a wind farm with two sets of 2MW class wind turbines. CFD analysis was calculated by using the commercial multi-purpose CFD solver ANSYS CFX. Blade design and modeling were based on blade element momentum theory. retain-->The rotational phase of two wind turbine rotors was synchronized, and the distance between the two wind turbines was changed from three to seven times of the rotor diameter. The tilting angle of the 2MW class wind turbine was set to 5°. A complete wind farm mesh is generated including the rotor, nacelle and tower. The results showed that there was a power output difference due to the wake effect between two wind turbines. The power output of the downstream wind turbine was changed with respect to the separation distance between wind turbines. The optimal compromise between wind farm construction cost, annual energy production and wind turbine lifetime as a function of separation distance is crucial. These CFD results can be applied to wind farm layout design, site evaluation and power output prediction.

Abstract:Firstly, the unstable wind profile was employed to simulate average wind profile of typhoon; the fluctuating wind spectrum of typhoon proposed by Hφjstrup Jφrgen was employed, and based on the theory of Shinozuka to simulate wind velocity of a wind farm in certain coastal region; simplified expression proposed by Shiotani was used to calculate the matrix of correlation coefficient and describe the correlation between different spatial points along vertical direction of the tower. The typhoon wind velocity which was achieved by simulation was compared with normal wind from Davenport spectrum simulation. The wind turbine load was calculated under the condition of feathering wind turbine and sudden wind deflection of 90 degrees or 180 degrees after feathering propeller according to blade element theory. Dynamic analysis of wind turbine under normal wind and typhoon was made. Displacement and acceleration response of different spatial points on the wind turbine was obtained. The most unfavorable stress distribution of the tower was analyzed. Feathering wind turbine has a significant effect to reduce load on wind turbine in normal wind condition, but the direction of typhoon is possible to change suddenly and this will lead to a significantly increasing of wind load on feathering propeller which is a more unfavorable load case. The calculation showed that yield failure was taken place on 16.8m height of the tower when typhoon's direction has a sudden deflection of 90 degrees.

Abstract:The magnitude and stability of power output are two key indices of wind turbines. This study investigates the effects of wind shear and tower shadow on power output in terms of power fluctuation and power loss to estimate the capacity and quality of the power generated by a wind turbine. First, wind speed models, particularly the wind shear model and the tower shadow model, are described in detail. The widely accepted tower shadow model is modified in view of the cone-shaped towers of modern large-scale wind turbines. Power fluctuation and power loss due to wind shear and tower shadow are analyzed by performing theoretical calculations and case analysis within the framework of a modified version of blade element momentum theory. Results indicate that power fluctuation is mainly caused by tower shadow, whereas power loss is primarily induced by wind shear. Under steady wind conditions, power loss can be divided into wind farm loss and rotor loss. Wind farm loss is constant at 3α(3α–1)R2/(8H2). By contrast, rotor loss is strongly influenced by the wind turbine control strategies and wind speed. That is, when the wind speed is measured in a region where a variable-speed controller works, the rotor loss stabilizes around zero, but when the wind speed is measured in a region where the blade pitch controller works, the rotor loss increases as the wind speed intensifies. The results of this study can serve as a reference for accurate power estimation and strategy development to mitigate the fluctuations in aerodynamic loads and power output due to wind shear and tower shadow.

Abstract:Site conditions and operational efficiency are two key influencing factors for wind turbine power generation performance, and three specific influencing factors, including air density, turbulence intensity, and yaw adaptability, are taken into consideration in this paper. On this basis, three new diagnostic methods of wind turbine generation performance are proposed, including a conversion method of air density based on two‐dimensional interpolation, a turbulence correction method based on zero‐turbulence curve, and a yaw adaptability diagnosis method based on convergence degree. The power generation performance of wind turbines has consistently been a paramount concern for wind power operators, maintainers, and manufacturers, as it directly determines the profitability of wind farms. However, due to the combined influence of complex environmental conditions within wind farms and inherent deficiencies in wind turbine design, significant variations in power generation performance persist among turbines of the same model. This discrepancy can be attributed to two crucial factors: site conditions and operational efficiency. To achieve more precise and systematic diagnostic work on the power generation performance of wind turbines, this paper focuses on three factors: air density, turbulence intensity, and yaw adaptability. Based on this, three evaluation and diagnosis methods are proposed, including a conversion method for air density based on two‐dimensional interpolation, a turbulence correction method based on the zero‐turbulence curve, and a yaw adaptability diagnosis method based on the convergence degree. Finally, the effectiveness of these proposed methods is verified through the analysis of actual wind field data.

Abstract:The accurate prediction of wind energy distribution on the terrain has been of great significance for wind farm selection. Therefore, this paper evaluated the influence of a two-dimensional hill with a relatively large slope (i.e., 0.83) on wind turbine wake. Firstly, the wakes on flat terrain and wind characteristics around a single hill were investigated by using a hot-wire anemometer. Subsequently, wake distributions combined with the hill were measured when the turbine was located 2D in front and on the hilltop. The results of the hill showed that a flow separation was formed within 6D of the leeward side (where D is the rotor diameter). The turbulence intensity increased initially and then decreased as height increased, leading to a high turbulence region 2.28 times the hill height, according to the experiment of a wind turbine combined with the hill. In conclusion, wake recovery was promoted on the windward side and 4D behind the hilltop. As the longitudinal coordinate increased, the intensity of the turbulence changed to a single peak, and the peak value was more than twice as high as on flat terrain. Based on this, it may be possible to optimize the design of wind turbines for better performance.

Abstract:Abstract. Numerous studies have shown that atmospheric conditions affect wind turbine performance; however, some findings have exposed conflicting results for different locations and diverse analysis methodologies. In this study, we explore how the change in wind direction with height (direction wind shear), a site-differing factor between conflicting studies, and speed shear affect wind turbine performance. We utilized lidar and turbine data collected from the 2013 Crop Wind Energy eXperiment (CWEX) project between June and September in a wind farm in north-central Iowa. Wind direction and speed shear were found to follow a diurnal cycle; however, they evolved differently with increasing wind speeds. Using a combination of speed and direction shear values, we found large direction and small speed shear to result in underperformance. We further analyzed the effects of wind veering on turbine performance for specific values of speed shear and found detrimental conditions on the order of 10 % for wind speed regimes predominantly located in the middle of the power curve. Focusing on a time period of ramping electricity demand (06:00–09:00 LT – local time) exposed the fact that large direction shear occurred during this time and undermined turbine performance by more than 10 %. A predominance of clockwise direction shear (wind veering) cases compared to counterclockwise (wind backing) was also observed throughout the campaign. Moreover, large veering was found to have greater detrimental effects on turbine performance compared to small backing values. This study shows that changes in wind direction with height should be considered when analyzing turbine performance.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents an academia-industry joint case study, which was conducted to quantify and compare multi-year changes in power production performance of multiple turbines scattered over a mid-size wind farm. This analysis is referred to as a space-time performance comparison. One key aspect in power performance analysis is to have the wind and environmental inputs controlled for. This research employs, in a sequential fashion, two principal modeling components to exercise tight control of multiple input conditions—a covariate matching method, followed by a Gaussian process model-based functional comparison. The analysis method is applied to a wind farm that houses 66 turbines on a moderately complex terrain. The power production and environmental data span nearly four years, during which period the turbines have gone through multiple technical upgrades. The space-time analysis presents a quantitative and global picture showing how turbines differ relative to each other as well as how each of them changes over time.</p>

Abstract:One of the most important and efficient sources of green electricity is catching air currents through wind turbine technology. Wind power plants are located in areas where the energy potential of the wind is high but it varies. The time variation of the wind generates fluctuations in the power produced by the wind farms that is injected into the grid. This elevates, depending on the intensity, problems of network stability and the need for balancing energy, thus raising both technical and cost issues. The present paper analyzes the behavior of a wind turbine (WT) over time in varying wind speed conditions, highlighting that without automation algorithms, a WT is far from the operation at the maximum power point (MPP). However, even when it is brought to operate at MPP, there are still significant variations in the power injected into the network. These power variations can be compensated if the wind system has energy storage facilities for the captured wind. All of these assumptions are analyzed using improved mathematical models and processed in simulations, with experimental data used as input from a wind turbine with an installed power of 2.5 [MW] in operation on the Romanian Black Sea coastal area. Consequently, the paper demonstrates that during an operation in the optimal area, from an energy perspective, the wind turbine's maximum power point requires a storage system for the captured wind energy.

Abstract:Wind turbines are machines operating in non-stationary conditions and the power of a wind turbine depends non-trivially on environmental conditions and working parameters. For these reasons, wind turbine power monitoring is a complex task which is typically addressed through data-driven methods for constructing a normal behavior model. On these grounds, this study is devoted the analysis of meaningful operation curves, which are rotor speed-power, generator speed-power and blade pitch-power. A key point is that these curves are analyzed in the appropriate operation region of the wind turbines: the rotor and generator curves are considered for moderate wind speed, when the blade pitch is fixed and the rotational speed varies (Region 2); the blade pitch curve is considered for higher wind speed, when the rotational speed is rated (Region 2 12). The selected curves are studied through a multivariate Support Vector Regression with Gaussian Kernel on the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) data of two wind farms sited in Italy, featuring in total 15 2 MW wind turbines. An innovative aspect of the selected models is that minimum, maximum and standard deviation of the independent variables of interest are fed as input to the models, in addition to the typically employed average values: using the additional covariates proposed in this work, the error metrics decrease of order of one third, with respect to what would be obtained by employing as regressors only the average values of the independent variables. In general it results that, for all the considered curves, the prediction of the power is characterized by error metrics which are competitive with the state of the art in the literature for multivariate wind turbine power curve analysis: in particular, for one test case, a mean absolute percentage error of order of 2.5% is achieved. Furthermore, the approach presented in this study provides a superior capability of interpreting wind turbine performance in terms of the behavior of the main sub-components and eliminates as much as possible the dependence on nacelle anemometer data, whose use is critical because of issues related to the sites complexity.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to perform an analysis to determine the most suitable type of wind turbine that can be installed at a specific location for electricity generation, using annual measurements of wind characteristics and meteorological parameters. Wind potential analysis has shown that the analyzed location is suitable for the development of a wind farm. The analysis was carried out for six different types of wind turbines, with a power ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 MW and a hub height set at 80 m. Wind power potential was assessed using the Weibull analysis. The values of the scale coefficient c were determined, and a large monthly variation was observed, with values ranging from 1.92 to 8.36 m/s and an annual value of 4.95 m/s. Monthly values for the shape coefficient k varied between 0.86 and 1.53, with an annual value of 1.07. Additionally, the capacity factor of the turbines was determined, ranging from 17.75 to 22.22%. The Vestas turbine, with a nominal power of 2 MW and a capacity factor of 22.22%, proved to be the most efficient wind turbine for the specific conditions of the location. The quantity of greenhouse gas emissions that will be reduced if this type of turbine is implemented was also calculated, considering the average CO 2 emission intensity factor (kg CO 2 /kWh) of the national electricity system.

Abstract:Wind speed and direction variations across the rotor affect power production. As utility‐scale turbines extend higher into the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) with larger rotor diameters and hub heights, they increasingly encounter more complex wind speed and direction variations. We assess three models for power production that account for wind speed and direction shear. Two are based on actuator disc representations, and the third is a blade element representation. We also evaluate the predictions from a standard power curve model that has no knowledge of wind shear. The predictions from each model, driven by wind profile measurements from a profiling LiDAR, are compared to concurrent power measurements from an adjacent utility‐scale wind turbine. In the field measurements of the utility‐scale turbine, discrete combinations of speed and direction shear induce changes in power production of −19% to +34% relative to the turbine power curve for a given hub height wind speed. Positive speed shear generally corresponds to over‐performance and increasing magnitudes of direction shear to greater under‐performance, relative to the power curve. Overall, the blade element model produces both higher correlation and lower error relative to the other models, but its quantitative accuracy depends on induction and controller sub‐models. To further assess the influence of complex, non‐monotonic wind profiles, we also drive the models with best‐fit power law wind speed profiles and linear wind direction profiles. These idealized inputs produce qualitative and quantitative differences in power predictions from each model, demonstrating that time‐varying, non‐monotonic wind shear affects wind power production.

Effects of Blade Extension on Power Production and Ultimate Loads of Wind Turbines

Abstract:Blade extension is an important type of technical transformation to improve the energy production of turbines for early-built wind farms. To evaluate the effects of blade extension on wind turbines, a 1.5 MW commercial wind turbine with three 37.5 m long blades is taken as the research object; the power enhancement and the load variations are systemically evaluated for three different blade extension lengths (1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m) resorting to the software GH-Bladed. The load cases cover all the requirements of the IEC-61400-1 standard. It is found that the optimum tip-speed ratio λopt and the corresponding power coefficient CPmax increase with the blade extension length. The annual energy power production is enhanced by about 3%, 4% and 6% for the extension length of 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m, respectively. The steady loads and dynamic loads, especially the thrust force of the rotor, the flapwise moment of the blade root and the overturning moment at the tower bottom, are significantly enhanced as the improvement of the power. In particular, the percentage increase of these quantities are over 10% when the extension achieves 2 m. It is also shown that blade extension can produce good economic benefit and the benefit improves with the extension length within the safety margin. The paper provides an important reference for this type of technical transformation.

Abstract:Enhancing the power production efficiency of large-scale wind farms is challenging for onshore wind power due to the variability of atmospheric conditions. This work aims to study the impact of atmospheric stability on the inter-farm wake pattern, topographic effect, and power production changes at two neighboring wind farms in Hami City, Xinjiang of China over complex terrain. The results show a discernible diurnal cycle property. At night in a stable layer with hindered mixing, the inter-farm wake persists around 20 km downstream, and the greatest relative wind deficit increases by 8%. However, during the daytime unstable layer with elevated turbulence, shows a limited deficit and recovers about 6 km downstream. Accordingly, a mean relative power production reduction of 17% is subjected to the downwind farm at night, about a factor of 3 greater than that at daytime, when the mean value is only 6%. Interestingly, the largest power production losses are experienced with a larger range between maximum and minimum before dawn and after dusk due to the notable inter-farm wake with a streaky structure related to the large coherent buoyant caused by the tendency of heat flux over the complex terrain. Moreover, the topographic speed-up in the stable layer outperforms that in unstable conditions.

Abstract:Today, the use of wind energy by wind turbines has grown significantly, and this development is due to the production of required energy and tourism attraction of wind turbines. But according to the standard technologies used in this industry, the operating costs are very high. For this reason, before the construction of wind farms, potential measurements should be done along with economic analysis. Therefore, in this research, a statistical analysis of wind farms has been done. In the statistical analysis, Weibull and Rayleigh distribution functions were used to predict the wind speed of the studied area. MATLAB software is used to model prediction functions. Among the important results of wind speed prediction by the Weibull distribution function, it can be mentioned that the wind speed is variable between 0.6 and 7 m/s in the studied area. The total power density and wind energy in the 10 years are equivalent to 28 W/m2 and 810/0534 kWh/m2 at the height of 10 m calculated.

Abstract:Accurate assessment of the power generation capacity of the wind farm is the key basis for incorporating it into power system scheduling and other optimizing operation activities. Traditional evaluation methods, such as benchmarking wind turbine method, have higher requirements for input data, but many wind farms in operation for many years are difficult to meet such data conditions. A new power generation capacity evaluation method based on correlation analysis of adjacent wind farms is proposed in this paper. Meteorological data and power of adjacent wind farms are used as replaced input data based on correlation analysis between the target farm with its adjacent farms. First, anticipate wind speed data and then construct the wind power curve with three different neural networks to evaluate power generation capacity. Afterwards, adjacent wind farms are used as data sources to fit the power data of the target wind farm with the application of influence radius method, inverse square distance method and bilinear interpolation method. Finally, combined with data in the actual case, investigate the advantages and disadvantages of different methods in the evaluation of power generation capacity.

Abstract:Electrical energy is an energy that has a big impact on human life. Power plants themselves are still very dependent on using fossil energy, while the supply of fossil fuels is currently running low, so alternative energy is needed to replace the use of fossil fuels to get electrical energy. Indonesian territory has an average wind speed of 3-6m/s. Therefore, a wind energy conversion system is needed that is in accordance with the wind speed profile in the territory of Indonesia. The use of wind energy it self is not a new discovery by mankind. Since 2000 humans have used water and wind energy, which has been known for a long time in the form of wind turbines (windmills). The result obtained from this study are by using a variation of 4 blade wind guide plates with a plate slope of 40  to produce an electric power of 0.64 watt. While the best efficiency of the Savonius wind turbine is obtained in a variation of 4 wind guide blades with a plate blade slope of 40  with an efficiency value of 2.44% because it has a good comparison between the distance of the blade strain and the flow of wind turbulence.

Abstract:Wind power production is driven by, and varies with, the stochastic yet uncontrollable wind and environmental inputs. To compare a wind turbine's performance, a direct comparison on power outputs is always confounded by the stochastic effect of weather inputs. It is therefore crucial to control for the weather and environmental influence. Toward that objective, our study proposes an energy decomposition approach. We start with comparing the change in the total energy production and refer to the change in total energy as delta energy. On this delta energy, we apply our decomposition method, which is to separate the portion of energy change due to weather effects from that due to the turbine itself. We derive a set of mathematical relationships allowing us to perform this decomposition and examine the credibility and robustness of the proposed decomposition approach through extensive cross‐validation and case studies. We then apply the decomposition approach to Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition data associated with several wind turbines to which leading‐edge protection was carried out. Our study shows that the leading‐edge protection applied on blades may cause a small decline to the power production efficiency in the short term, although we expect the leading‐edge protection to benefit the blade's reliability in the long term.
