Abstract:SF6 has strong greenhouse effect, and the research on the environmental friendly alternative SF6 gas has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, alkanes, halogenated hydrocarbons and fluorinated hydrocarbons with special groups were selected as the research objects and a nonlinear regression model for predicting insulation strength was established. The microscopic parameters of each gas molecule were calculated by density functional theory. The calculation functional is B3LYP and the basis are 6-31g/6-31g (d). The results show that the insulation strength of gas molecules increases with the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. When the number of carbon atoms is the same, the insulation strength of gas molecules containing unsaturated bonds is higher. The energy of the lowest unoccupied molecule orbit and vertical electron affinity of gas molecules are important parameters to study the insulation strength of gas, but they have a strong collinearity relationship, so only one of them can be choose in establishing the calculation model of the insulation strength of micro parameters by regression analysis. The insulation strength prediction model describes the sample value characteristics of vertical electron affinity through exponential function, and the correlation coefficient R2 is 0.735, which can preliminarily screen SF6 substitute gases.

Abstract:Searching for new SF6 replacement gases from a large number of candidate molecular gases usually requires laborious experimental works with high costs. Here we report an efficient and economic computation-based scheme which can semi-quantitatively predict the thermodynamics and electric properties of new SF6 substitute insulation gases with a statistical model combined with quantum chemical calculations. Tests for many representative small molecules with comparison to available experiment data shows that high correlation coefficients can be achieved for our multiple regression analysis. Further investigations for new SF6 substitute molecule gases with this model were also given and discussed. Such a framework is expected to be used for the economic and efficient pre-selection for further time-consuming and high-cost experiments.

Abstract:Computational screening of single gases to replace SF6 for electrical insulation has been challenged by the difficulty in combining various mutually exclusive properties especially for dielectric performance with liquefaction and environmental properties. To reveal the inherent correlations between dielectric strength (Er), boiling point (Tb), and global warming potential (GWP) of dielectric materials, a coupled structure‐activity relationship (CSAR) model has been proposed for the first time. By means of the generic descriptors, as deduced from the electrostatic potentials, and the specific descriptors, as introduced from the respective microscopic mechanisms, the complex interdependence between Er, Tb, and GWP of the insulation gases is quantitatively characterised by the 3‐D coupling matrix. The coupling mechanism for the right balance of properties is uncovered in terms of the first‐principle descriptors. The CSAR model outperforms the previous SAR models in predicting Er, Tb, and GWP simultaneously in a self‐consistent manner. More importantly, the concept of CSAR could be extended readily to any multidimensional macroscopic properties. Novel replacement compounds have been identified tentatively to be the promising candidates to replace SF6 using the CSAR model.

Abstract:Halogenated methyl-phenyl ethers (anisoles) are ubiquitous organic compounds in the environment. In the present study, geometrical optimization and electrostatic potential calculations have been performed for 134 halogenated anisoles at the HF/6-31G* level of theory. A number of statistically based parameters have been obtained. Linear relationships between sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures (lgp(L)), n-octanol/water partition coefficient (lgK(ow)) and aqueous solubilities (-lgS(w,L)) of halogenated anisoles and the structural descriptors have been established by multiple regression method. The result shows that the quantities derived from electrostatic potential V(min), V(s,max), summation operatorV(s)(+), summation operatorV(s)(-), V(s,av)(-) and nu, together with the molecular volume (V(mc)) and E(HOMO) can be well used to express the quantitative structure-property relationships of halogenated anisoles, which proves the general applicability of this parameter set to a great extent. Good predictive capabilities have also been demonstrated. Based on these excellent equations, the predicted values have been presented for those halogenated anisoles whose experimentally determined physicochemical properties are unavailable.
The Development of SF6 Green Substitute Gas

Abstract:Due to its high greenhouse effect, the use of SF6 as the main insulating gas is restricted in the electric power field. Along with the aim of environmental protection, the search for new alternative gases with a lower greenhouse effect and higher insulation strength has received a lot of attention. The properties of alternative gases have a vital impact on the performance of medium-voltage power distribution equipment. Firstly, based on the existing liquefaction temperatures of SF6/N2, SF6/CO2, and SF6/CF4, the calculated liquefaction temperatures were expanded to 0.7 MPa. Combining the Antoine vapor-pressure equation and the basic law of vapor–liquid balance, the vapor pressures of SF6/N2, CF3I/N2, c-C4F8/N2, C4-PFN/N2, C4-PFN/CO2, and C5-PFK/CO2 were obtained. Secondly, the critical breakdown field strength was analyzed for C4-PFN/CO2, C5-PFK/CO2, SF6, CF3I/N2, C5-PFK/Air, and c-C4F8/N2. Finally, the GWPs of SF6/N2, C4-PFN/N2, C4-PFN/CO2, C5-PFK/CO2, and C5-PFK/N2 were discussed. The results show that the liquefaction temperature gradually decreases as the pressure rises; SF6/N2 has the highest vapor pressure at −5 °C; the critical breakdown field strengths of several mixtures are higher than that of SF6.

Abstract:Octafluorocyclobutane, c-C4F8, and its derivatives are regarded as promising replacements of insulation gaseous SF6, which are currently widely used in electric equipment but suffer greatly from its greenhouse effect. Based on the recent finding that the dielectric and thermodynamics properties of insulating gases are greatly dependent on the molecule's microscopic electronic and vibrational parameters, in this work, we use density functional theory (DFT) to study the molecular structures, electron affinities, and IR-active vibrational frequencies as well as thermodynamic properties for c-C4F8 and a series of mono-, di-substituted c-C4F8 compounds. It is shown that DFT calculation of perfluoro-compounds is sensitive to the chosen functional. Although all chloro-substituted c-C4F8 molecules are found to have much larger electron affinities, only part of them have less IR intensity in the atmospheric IR "window" than c-C4F8. Such a study provides useful guideline for the pre-screening search for new insulation gases via electronic structure calculations.
Discovery of a novel binary azeotrope with positive synergistic insulation strength as eco-friendly SF6-alternative

Abstract:Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), as the arc extinguishing and insulating medium, is broadly applied in power equipment. While it is very essential to find an environmentally friendly substitute gas for SF6 due to its strong greenhouse effect. Although there are many potential alternatives, most have relatively high boiling points that cannot meet the minimum operating temperature of the power equipment. In the past, the liquefaction temperature of the mixture was reduced by mixing with buffer gases, such as CO2, N2, or dry air. But this method cannot take the insulation performance requirements of eco-friendly insulating gas into account. Therefore, given the current problems and challenges, a novel approach is presented to exploring new eco-friendly gases by incorporating the azeotropic theory. The liquefaction temperature of the gas mixture can be reduced simultaneously while the insulation strength is increased. In this approach, a theoretical prediction model E-PPR78 was introduced to predict the vapor-liquid equilibrium data and RC318 was found to exhibit azeotrope behavior with HFO-1336mzz(E) at 17%. Furthermore, the predicted vapor-liquid equilibrium data obtained were validated against cyclic-analytical experimental results, affirming the efficacy of the proposed model. Subsequently, to assess its insulation performance, breakdown tests were conducted under both AC and lightning impulse voltages, revealing significant positive synergistic effects in the gas mixture. The possible mechanisms of this positive synergistic effect were also discussed. This study offers an innovative way of tackling high boiling point issues plaguing eco-friendly gases. The findings may also enlighten the design of eco-friendly switchgear that utilizes HFO-1336mzz(E) mixtures to replace traditional SF6 gases.

Analysis of Surface Charge Decay Process on Insulators in SF6 and Air

Abstract:The surface of insulators is prone to generate charges under a DC high-voltage for a long time,which has a great impact on insulation performance of the insulators.Surface charges decay by three mechanisms,by volume and surface resistivity of the insulator as well as by neutralization from the gas.To study surface charge decay process on insulators,a set of surface charge measurement device was designed,which could measure the surface charge distribution on insulators in different gases and different air pressures.The insulator which was used during experiments was made of epoxy resin,and the capacitance probe method was used for measurement.The surface charge decay processes were experimentally measured in air at 0.1 MPa and in SF6 at 0.5 MPa.The experimental results reveal that,the decay process of the surface charge is similar to exponential decay process,and the time constant of the decay rate is 104 s.The rates and mechanisms of charge decay in different environments are discussed in particular.The surface charges mainly decay by volume and surface resistivity of the insulator.
X-Ray Radiation As a Possible Approach for Realizing Surface Charge Decay on Post Insulators Inside SF6

Abstract:Surface charge accumulation has been a long-existed issue hindering the development of insulators in gas-insulated equipment. However, the mechanism is still not clear. In this paper, the surface potential distribution before and after X-ray irradiation is analyzed, and a surface charge transport model is established. The effects of the generation rate of ion pairs and the applied voltage on the surface charge are studied. The results show that a large number of positive charges accumulate on the insulator surface after X-ray radiation. Surface charges cannot be dissipated by X-rays under online condition. Under offline condition, the conduction current in gas becomes the dominate pathway of surface charge dissipation. Since X-rays can promote the ionization of SF 6 , the charged particles generated by the ionization recombine with the hetero-polar surface charges. Therefore, the surface charge can be dissipated quickly. Under the applied voltage, ions of opposite polarity in gas migrate to the insulator surface. As a result, positive charges accumulate on the spacer surface. To conclude, X-rays are only suggested as a tool for surface charge dissipation under offline operation.

Abstract:Abstract Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is widely used across multiple electric stages and different power grid levels. However, the threat from several inevitable faults in the GIS system surrounds us for the safety of electricity use. In order to improve the evaluation ability of GIS system safety, we propose an efficient strategy by using machine learning to conduct SF 6 decomposed components analysis (DCA) for further diagnosing discharge fault types in GIS. Note that the empirical probability function of different faults fitted by the Arrhenius chemical reaction model has been investigated into the robust feature engineering for machine learning based GIS diagnosing model. Six machine learning algorithms were used to establish models for the severity of discharge fault and main insulation defects, where identification algorithms were trained by learning the collection dataset composing the concentration of the different gas types (SO 2 , SOF 2 , SO 2 F 2 , CF 4 , and CO 2 , etc.) in the system and their ratios. Notably, multiple discharge fault types coexisting in GIS can be effectively identified based on a probability model. This work would provide a great insight into the development of evaluation and optimization on solving discharge fault in GIS.

Abstract:The most frequent insulation defect appears to be the presence of small amounts of spherical, linear, and other shapes of micro metallic particles in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Gas Insulated Transmission Line (GIL). It poses a major risk for partial discharge if the metallic particles travel to the location with a high field strength. The study to inhibit the movement of metal particles and thus solve the issue of metallic particle contamination is the key technical challenge to effectively improve the insulation strength. In this paper, we present a mathematical-physical model applicable to the real structure with complex electric field and various types of particles using the finite element method (FEM) and the differential element method (DEM). This study shows that the asymmetry of the electrostatic force caused by the asymmetry of the particle shape is the main cause of the complex motion behavior. The model can predict several unique occurrences, including the one-sided lifting of longer linear particles, and our experiments have confirmed these predictions. The method of dielectric coating for particle motion inhibition is investigated, and a significant inhibition effect is observed as the lift-off voltage of the particles is dramatically increased.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly gas with good insulation and stable chemical properties, CF3I gas mixture is considered as a potential alternative to SF6 gas to compensate for the shortcomings of SF6 gas as a greenhouse gas. This article attempts to study the CF3I ternary gas mixtures with c-C4F8 and N2 by considering the process of streamer development in surface discharge. The model of surface discharge in CF3I gas mixture under DC voltage was established by COMSOL, and the drift-diffusion equations of particles was solved to show the discharge process, and the changes of electric field and particle concentration, etc. during the development of streamer were obtained, which provides the theoretical basis for the reliable diagnosis of partial discharge. On this basis, the model is compared with models for two other different gases (SF6/N2, artificial air) in terms of particle characteristics, streamer characteristics and streamer branches characteristics. Finally, it is concluded that under this model, although the insulation characteristics in CF3I gas mixture are weaker than those in SF6, the difference is not large and both are much better than those in artificial air, so c-C4F8/CF3I can be considered as a potential substitute for SF6.

Abstract:During the long-term operation of electrical equipment, the insulation performance of applied SF 6 gas may be affected by humidity, pressure, and temperature. In this study, the collision cross sections of SF 6 and H 2 O are considered, including ionization, attachment, excitation, and elastic collision. In order to analyze the influencing factors of SF 6 insulation performance, discharge parameters are computed by the Boltzmann equation under different environmental conditions, including humidity, pressure, and temperature. It is concluded that with the conditions of 0.1 MPa and 300 K, the critical breakdown electric field increases by 1.23 kV/cm as the relative humidity increases from 0% to 80%. As the pressure increases from 0.1 to 0.6 MPa, the critical breakdown electric field increases by 451.07 kV/cm. However, temperature also has little effect on the insulation performance of SF 6 gas. The conclusions of this study have reference value for safe and stable operation of SF 6 insulated power equipment.

Abstract:Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) was a crucial electrical equipment that provides the safety and security of power systems, and finding the eco-friendly alternatives of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) as insulating medium in GIS has been an urgent demand in past decades. However, few studies reported the specific dielectric strength under various electrodes and partial discharge (PD) decomposition products detection of applying the eco-friendly gas in GIS. In this paper, the insulation properties among C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures, dry air and CO 2 were explored under the reduced-scale gas-insulated experimental device. The relationship between AC breakdown voltage and gas pressure was gained under the different electrodes and gap distances, and 0.6 MPa 7% C 4 F 7 N/93% CO 2 , 0.9 MPa dry air, 0.9 MPa CO 2 all possess the capacity to be the insulating medium in eco-friendly gas insulated switchgear. Furthermore, the partial discharge experimental was also carried out to realize the decomposition products detection of dry air, which designs three common defect types including metal protrusion defects, air gap defects, and metal contamination defects. The decomposition products detection result shows that the contains of CO 2 , CO, and NO 2 linearly increase with the increasing applied voltages and times, and the partial discharge defects are distinguished according to the ratios of c(CO 2 + CO)/c(NO 2 ) and c(CO 2 )/c(CO). The results can provide the basis for the further development of eco-friendly gas insulated switchgear.

Abstract:The global warming potential (GWP) is a relative measure of the capability of a molecule to trap the Earth's infrared radiation as heat. The measurement or prediction of the GWP of a molecule is based on two factors: the radiative efficiency and atmospheric lifetime of a molecule. While the calculation of the radiative efficiency of a molecule using the computational chemistry approach, such as density functional theory (DFT), is well-established and robust, the development of a computational approach to estimate the atmospheric lifetime remains challenging and limited to date. In this contribution, we developed a machine learning (ML) approach to estimate a molecule's atmospheric lifetime and GWP100 based on electronic and geometrical features. We benchmarked the state-of-the-art computational workflow with the developed ML model in estimating the atmospheric lifetime and GWP100. The developed ML model outperforms the existing approach with the mean absolute error values of 0.234 (ML-predicted atmospheric lifetime) and 0.249 (direct ML model for GWP100) compared with 0.535 (Atkinson's method) and 0.773 (Kazakov et al.) from previous works. The developed models were used to screen >7000 molecules in PubChem and bigQM7 data sets in a search for SF6 replacement gas for the electric industry and identified 84 potential candidates.

Theoretical Study on Adsorption Behavior of SF6 Decomposition Components on Mg-MOF-74

Abstract:SF6 gas is an arc extinguishing medium that is widely used in gas insulated switchgear (GIS). When insulation failure occurs in GIS, it leads to the decomposition of SF6 in partial discharge (PD) and other environments. The detection of the main decomposition components of SF6 is an effective method to diagnose the type and degree of discharge fault. In this paper, Mg-MOF-74 is proposed as a gas sensing nanomaterial for detecting the main decomposition components of SF6. The adsorption of SF6, CF4, CS2, H2S, SO2, SO2F2 and SOF2 on Mg-MOF-74 was calculated by Gaussian16 simulation software based on density functional theory. The analysis includes parameters of the adsorption process such as binding energy, charge transfer, and adsorption distance, as well as the change in bond length, bond angle, density of states, and frontier orbital of the gas molecules. The results show that Mg-MOF-74 has different degrees of adsorption for seven gases, and chemical adsorption will lead to changes in the conductivity of the system; therefore, it can be used as a gas sensing material for the preparation of SF6 decomposition component gas sensors.

Abstract:Exploring the gas-solid compatibility between insulating gas and solids materials used in electrical equipment is of great significance for determining the long-term behavior of insulating gas trifluoromethanesulonyl fluoride (CF3SO2F). The gas-solid compatibility of CF3SO2F and its decomposition products with Ag, Zn, and ZnO common surfaces has been assessed based on first-principles calculations, with SF6 as the control group. CF3SO2F has excellent gas-solid compatibility with the solid surfaces by analyzing the adsorption configurations, adsorption energies, charge transfer, adsorption height, density of states, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) results. The external electric fields do not affect the excellent compatibility between CF3SO2F and the solid surfaces. Besides, the Ag(111) surface exhibits fine gas-solid compatibility with all decomposition products benefitting from its low surface energy. Originating in the existence of the three-center-four-electron (3c4e) π bond and F atoms with strong electronegativity in SO2F2, SO2F2 has poor compatibility with the Ag(110), (100), and Zn(001) surface. SO2, COF2, and HF gases may accelerate equipment failure due to the strong adsorption strength and poor compatibility with ZnO(100) and (110) surfaces. The results provide the theoretical guidance for the engineering application and long-term performance evaluation of CF3SO2F.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly gas with good insulation and stable chemical properties, CF3I gas mixture is considered as a potential alternative to SF6 gas to compensate for the shortcomings of SF6 gas as a greenhouse gas. This article attempts to study the CF3I ternary gas mixtures with c-C4F8 and N-2 by considering the process of streamer development in surface discharge. The model of surface discharge in CF3I gas mixture under DC voltage was established by COMSOL, and the drift-diffusion equations of particles was solved to show the discharge process, and the changes of electric field and particle concentration, etc. during the development of streamer were obtained, which provides the theoretical basis for the reliable diagnosis of partial discharge. On this basis, the model is compared with models for two other different gases (SF6/N-2, artificial air) in terms of particle characteristics, streamer characteristics and streamer branches characteristics. Finally, it is concluded that under this model, although the insulation characteristics in CF3I gas mixture are weaker than those in SF6, the difference is not large and both are much better than those in artificial air, so c-C4F8/CF3I can be considered as a potential substitute for SF6.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the electromechanics of the spherical metal particles in AC gas-insulated lines (GIL) with a pragmatic test rig comprising coaxial cylindrical electrodes. Analysis on fluid resistance during the particle moving process is presented based on fluid mechanics as well as the kinetic parameters of the SF6/N2 mixture. The interactive impacts between the particle and the conductor or the shell are also proposed based on collision theory of elastic mechanics considering random effects caused by the metal surface roughness. With the above aspects being included, a dynamic motion model for the spherical metal particles within AC GIL is established accordingly, and experimental studies are carried out to validate effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model. Meanwhile, simulations are done regarding a real 220 kV AC GIL for further governance and verifications. The research observations indicate that, the applied voltage exerts an incremental effect on the maximum height of the moving particle, but won't affect the spread angle of the particle motion. Both the height and the spread angle of the particle's motion show inflection points with increased particle radius. On the contrary, the maximum height of the moving particle decreases with the increase of SF6 ratio and the gas pressure.
