Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the biomechanical mechanisms driving passengers' lower-limb postural shifts during seated sleep on a flight to prevent negative effects on passengers' physical health. Twenty subjects participated in an observational study and a subsequent experiment on fatigue development and tissue oxygenation changes during seated sleep in an economy-class aircraft seat. Three of the most frequently used postures, which involved four targeted muscles of the legs and the thigh-buttock region, were selected and examined in the experiment with the following measures: muscle electromyogram, tissue oxygenation, and body contact pressure distribution. The results showed that the fatigue of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius and the compression of the region under the medial tuberosities were relieved by alternations among the three positions-position 1 (placing the shanks forwards), position 2 (placing the shanks neutrally), and position 3 (placing the shanks backwards). This research reveals the mechanical properties of the biomechanical factors functioning in lower-limb postural shifts during seated sleep and provides design optimization strategies for economy-class aircraft seats to reduce the negative effects on passenger health.
Sitting posture detection and recognition of aircraft passengers using machine learning

Abstract:Abstract Prolonged sitting in a fixed or constrained position exposes aircraft passengers to long-term static loading of their bodies, which has deleterious effects on passengers’ comfort throughout the duration of the flight. The previous studies focused primarily on office and driving sitting postures and few studies, however, focused on the sitting postures of passengers in aircraft. Consequently, the aim of the present study is to detect and recognize the sitting postures of aircraft passengers in relation to sitting discomfort. A total of 24 subjects were recruited for the experiment, which lasted for 2 h. Furthermore, a total of 489 sitting postures were extracted and the pressure data between subjects and seat was collected from the experiment. After the detection of sitting postures, eight types of sitting postures were classified based on key parts (trunk, back, and legs) of the human bodies. Thereafter, the eight types of sitting postures were recognized with the aid of pressure data of seat pan and backrest employing several machine learning methods. The best classification rate of 89.26% was obtained from the support vector machine (SVM) with radial basis function (RBF) kernel. The detection and recognition of the eight types of sitting postures of aircraft passengers in this study provided an insight into aircraft passengers’ discomfort and seat design.

Abstract:Abstract Discomfort caused by long-term sitting decreases the passenger experience and may lead to musculoskeletal diseases, and this has become one of the main problems for passengers of high-speed railways. However, the comfort degradation mechanism during long-term sitting in high-speed railways is still unknown. This study aimed to reveal passengers’ sitting comfort degradation mechanism in high-speed railways. By carrying out long-term sitting tests on high-speed trains running on the Shanghai-Kunming line, the dynamic interface pressure and subjective comfort including overall and regional comfort of seven participants were obtained. Machine learning models and statistical analysis methods were combined for data analysis to reveal the effect of regional comfort and the contribution of sitting duration during the process of sitting comfort degradation. The results show that overall comfort is most significantly influenced by the comfort of the shoulders, waist and buttocks. The seats play different roles before and after 20 minutes during long-term sitting and there is a lag between the fatigue occurring and being offset. Therefore, the structure of seats affects overall comfort by affecting important regional comfort, and a long-term sitting test is necessary for accurate seat assessment. The comfort degradation mechanism can be used to define standards for long-term sitting comfort or provide guidance for seat evaluation, and the design and evaluation plan mentioned in this article for second-class seats can be applied to other cases with limited accommodating space.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to provide evidence that empty follicle syndrome (EFS) is a result of an abnormality in the in-vivo biological activity of some batches of commercially available human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). This is a comparative study between six consecutive in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cases with EFS (study group) and 10 IVF pregnancy cycles (control group). Both groups received the same ovarian stimulation protocol consisting of leuprolide acetate and human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG). An i.m. injection of 10,000 IU of HCG was administered once follicles had reached 18-20 mm and oestradiol/follicle > or = 16 mm was at least 900 pmol/l. Transvaginal aspiration was performed 36 h later. Plasma HCG prior to and 12 h after i.m. injection as well as the follicular fluid (FF) concentrations of oestradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and HCG were determined in the study group and controls. The in-vitro biological activity of the batch of HCG used by the EFS cases and the control group was determined using a Leydig cell preparation from adult rats. Furthermore, the plasma clearance rate after i.v. injection of 5000 IU of HCG, from the same batches, was studied in three male volunteers. In the IVF cycles, no HCG was detected in plasma prior to the injection of commercial HCG. After 12 h, no HCG was detected in the study group compared to a mean of 207.5 IU/l (110-360) in controls. Mean FF concentration of LH, HCG, progesterone and oestradiol was 0.9 IU/l, 0 IU/l, 3.1 nmol/ml and 4.4 nmol/ml in EFS compared to 1.0, 98.3, 32.0 and 3.7 in pregnancy cycles. The in-vitro biological activity in both HCG batches was not significantly different; however, immunoreactive HCG used in EFS cases was undetectable in plasma of male volunteers as soon as 10 min after i.v. injection of 5000 IU of HCG. The endocrine abnormalities found in follicular fluids of EFS are not a consequence of an ovarian problem but the result of a lack of exposure to biologically active HCG. The rapid clearance of the drug after i.v. injection and the high affinity of desialylated HCG to liver cells suggest this to be a possible explanation for this infrequent but unfortunate event.

Abstract:The present work investigates the contact forces between sitters and seat as well as their correlations with perceived discomfort. Twelve different economy class aeroplane seat configurations were simulated using a multi-adjustable experimental seat by varying seat pan and backrest angles, as well as seat pan compressed surface. Eighteen males and 18 females, selected by their body mass index and stature, tested these configurations for two sitting postures. Perceived discomfort was significantly affected by seat parameters and posture and correlated both with normal force distribution on the seat-pan surface and with normal forces at the lumbar and head supports. Lower discomfort ratings were obtained for more evenly distributed normal forces on the seat pan. Shear force at the seat pan surface was at its lowest when sitters were allowed to self-select their seat-pan angle, supporting that a shear force should be reduced but not zeroed to improve seating comfort. Practitioner Summary: The effects of seat-pan and backrest angle, anthropometric dimensions and sitting posture on contact forces and perceived discomfort were investigated using a multi-adjustable experimental seat. In addition to preferred seat profile parameters, the present work provides quantitative guidelines on contact force requirement for improving seating comfort.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study was designed to explore the relationship between intramuscular cysts and rotator cuff tendon tears. CONCLUSION Intramuscular cysts are strongly associated with rotator cuff tendon tears. Identification of such a cyst should prompt a search for a rotator cuff tear. Findings on MR arthrography and surgery suggest that a delaminating component of the rotator cuff tear may lead to the development of these cysts and may explain the occasional discrepancy between location of tears and location of cysts.

Abstract:Seat pressure maps are often used to evaluate comfort of the users. In this study, we explored the relationships between pressure maps and comfort/discomfort of users in aircraft seats with a focus on a new 6-division method on the pressure maps collected at the bottom of the cushions. An experiment was designed where three cushions with identical shapes but different stiffnesses were prepared. 33 subjects joined the experiment and after sitting on each cushion in 4 postures, they completed comfort questionnaires. Pressure maps on the top as well as the bottom of cushions were collected and analysed. Results indicated that measures on the proposed 6 divisions, especially on the distal posterior thigh regions and regions close to ischial tuberosity of the bottom pressure maps, had larger correlation values to comfort scores compared to other division methods. Practitioner summary: The relations between comfort/discomfort and seat pressure maps collected from the top/bottom of three cushions were studied with 33 subjects in four postures. The distal posterior thigh and ischial tuberosity regions in the proposed 6-division of the bottom pressure maps had larger correlation values to comfort/discomfort compared to other methods.
Effect of in-seat exercising on comfort perception of airplane passengers

Abstract:Sitting still for extended periods of time can lead to physical discomfort and even serious health risks. Due to safety regulations, reducing passenger' sitting time in aircrafts is not feasible. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study, in where an interactive airplane seat was compared with a current economy class seat. Participants used both seats for 3.5 h, and performed significantly more in-seat movements when using the interactive seating system. Furthermore, this interactive seat predominantly lead to significantly better comfort experiences and reduced discomfort experiences, however no significant differences have been found in self-reported localized musculoskeletal discomfort. Passengers indicated that they would prefer this interactive seat over a standard aircraft seat.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the comparative assessment of comfort and discomfort (hereafter, (dis-)comfort) for aircraft seating. Subjective and objective data of seating (dis-)comfort were collected during an experiment involving 20 volunteers who tested 3 aircraft double-seats in upright and reclined position. In order to minimize experimental uncertainty due to well-known noise factors (i.e. patterns of discomfort during the work week and during the work day, order of evaluation, inter-individual differences), experimental trials were performed according to a crossover design. Statistical data analysis aimed mainly at investigating (dis-)comfort differences across seat conditions; gender-based differences in perceived discomfort on different body parts; effect of sitting duration on perceived discomfort on different body parts. The experimental results show that differences across seat conditions impacted differently on perceived discomfort depending on gender, body parts and sitting duration. No significant differences in perceived discomfort across gender were evident for the lightweight seat in both upright and reclined positions. On the contrary, for both baseline configurations, perceived discomfort at head and neck areas was higher for males than for females. For all seat conditions, participants experienced a significant worsening of perceived comfort over time at shoulders, back, sacrum and thighs and, in addition, at upper body area (i.e. neck, arm and forearm) and knees only for seats in reclined position.

Abstract:Sleep quality is an important issue of public concern. This study, combined with sensor application, aims to explore the determinants of perceived comfort when using smart bedding to provide empirical evidence for improving sleep quality. This study was conducted in a standard sleep laboratory in Quanzhou, China, from March to April of 2023. Perceived comfort was evaluated using the Subjective Lying Comfort Evaluation on a seven-point rating scale, and body pressure distribution was measured using a pressure sensor. Correlation analysis was employed to analyze the relationship between perceived comfort and body pressure, and multiple linear regression was used to identify the factors of perceived comfort. The results showed that body pressure was partially correlated with perceived comfort, and sleep posture significantly influenced perceived comfort. In addition, height, weight, and body mass index are common factors that influence comfort. The findings highlight the importance of optimizing the angular range of boards based on their comfort performance to adjust sleeping posture and equalize pressure distribution. Future research should consider aspects related to the special needs of different populations (such as height and weight), as well as whether users are elderly and whether they have particular diseases. The design optimization of the bed board division and mattress softness, based on traditional smart bedding, can improve comfort and its effectiveness in reducing health risks and enhancing health status.

Assessment of driver's seating discomfort using interface pressure distribution

Abstract:Pressure distribution at the driver-seat interface has been regarded as an objective measure having a clear association with subjective ratings, yet existing evidence regarding its efficacy is unclear. This study examined associations between driver's seating discomfort and kinds of pressure distribution variables considering driver's behaviours showing discomfort - changing seating postures and moving frequently. This requires quantitative and dynamic analyses of body pressure distribution. To investigate the relationship of pressure data with driver's postural changes, eight subjects performed a simulated driving task for 100 min in a driving simulator. The driving postures and body-seat interface pressure were measured continuously, and the subjective ratings were surveyed at the prescribed interval. In this study, two kinds of body pressure distribution variables were proposed as components of a discomfort assessment framework, and the relationship between these pressure variables with subjective ratings were analyzed. The close correlations between the pressure ratio variables and subjective ratings supported the possibility of using pressure data as a tool for the assessment of driver discomfort. It was also found that the change of load center position represented the change of driver's postures and might be a good indicator for discomfort prediction.
Effects of seat parameters and sitters' anthropometric dimensions on seat profile and optimal compressed seat pan surface

Abstract:Designing one seat for multi-sitters and multi-activities is challenging especially in a very restrained aircraft economy class cabin. In this paper, the effects of seat parameters and sitters' anthropometric dimensions on seat profile and optimal compressed seat pan surface were studied using a newly built multi-adjustable experimental seat. The 'optimal' seat pan contact surface was obtained by controlling the height of 52 cylinders so that the normal contact force was distributed to all cylinders as evenly as possible. With 13 other motorized adjustments controllable by a computer, individual seat profile in the symmetry plane such as seat height, seat pan length, seat pan angle, lumbar protrusion and headrest position were also studied. Data were collected from 36 men and women of varying body size testing 40 seat configurations. Parametric models were obtained for predicting seat profile and optimal compressed seat pan seat surface in function of seat pan and back rest angles for two sitting postures. It is expected that the proposed parametric models provide necessary reference values in seat development for a better fit of a target population of sitters with large varying body size.
The influence of activities and duration on comfort and discomfort development in time of aircraft passengers

Abstract:Background: Discomfort increases when duration of sitting is longer. Aircraft passengers are subjected to prolonged sitting in restricted postures, which can cause discomfort. Objective: To examine the relationship between duration of sitting and development of discomfort, as well as the influence of different passenger activities. Methods: Participants (n = 18) performed four different activities in three conditions during an aircraft seat test. Discomfort was measured every 15 min on an 11-point scale. A short online survey asked passengers (n = 114) when they felt most refreshed during their last flight. Results: Discomfort was significantly lower during the 'food' activity for condition 2 (hot meal), compared to conditions 1 and 3 (drinks, snack). The largest decrease in discomfort was during the 15 min break between two conditions, in which participants could walk around. Respondents from the online survey indicated they felt most refreshed after food (34.8%), sleeping (27.0%) and walking through the plane (25.2%). Walking was mentioned more often as most refreshing activity by long-haul passengers (>6 h) compared to short-haul passengers (<2 h). Conclusions: Passengers can be distracted from feeling discomfort by providing food and drinks. Airlines and seat manufacturers can increase comfort by stimulating passengers to move in their seat.

Abstract:With the development of economy and the increase of social pressure, the proportion of working time for people is increasing year by year, which directly leads to the continuous expansion of the number of sedentary population. A large number of studies have shown that a sedentary lifestyle has become a global public health problem, which has a negative impact on human life. Unhealthy sitting posture can lead to many diseases. When people sitting for a long time, the unbalanced force may lead to some diseases such as sitting sores and lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spine injury etc. Therefore, it is necessary to study the pressure distribution in the sitting position. Smart seat and mobile application designed for sedentary people is an effective tool for the prevention of these diseases, the pressure center of the body posture can be detected and analyzed, in order to guide people to the correct posture, help prevent disease due to unbalanced posture. The smart cushion is composed of three parts: pressure data acquisition module (internet of things), data receiving and processing module, data storage and analysis module. This study expounds the theory of sitting posture, explains the mechanism causing pathological effect and psychological effects of sedentary, and then makes a literature review, describes the research status of the pressure distribution of sitting posture, thermal comfort and cushion design, as a standard reference for subsequent design. This study gives definition and classification of sedentary population, puts forward the scheme of smart cushion and mobile application for the sedentary people, and focuses on the function, design and implementation of each module. Finally, it shows the hard and soft system, and tests normal subjects and patients with lumbar spine disease using the smart cushion. The analysis and experimental results show that the design of the smart cushion scheme is reasonable and feasible, and can realize the dynamic and real-time measurement of the pressure center in the sitting posture, and cumulative effect calculation.
Sitting comfort analysis and prediction for high-speed rail passengers based on statistical analysis and machine learning

Abstract:Various comfort evaluation models have been extensively studied for improving driver seat and office seat designs for the purpose of improving seat comfort. High-speed rail (HSR) seat comfort is influenced by specific environments, activities, and postures, and targeted in-depth research on this topic is lacking. Existing evaluation cannot ensure the validity of data at the early stages of model training because of their direct reliance on subjective evaluation data, thereby limiting the improvement in the accuracy of prediction. In this study, we designed a sitting observation experiment and static sitting comfort experiment for the typical activities of HSR passengers. The sitting posture of HSR passengers under typical activities was classified for different comfort levels based on the factors influencing the sitting posture in terms of bone and muscle biomechanics. The correlations between the subjective discomfort in different sitting positions, objective change patterns, and body pressure distribution parameters were statistically analysed. The possibility of using sitting duration and sitting frequency as objective behavioural indicators of discomfort evaluation was indicated. Based on the verification of the reliability of the evaluation data, the classification performance of various machine learning algorithms was compared and analysed, and a sitting comfort prediction model was established based on the gradient boosting machine algorithm, with an accuracy of 89.5%. This study serves as an effective reference for improvement strategies for HSR passenger comfort and will inspire new ideas for exploring objective indicators for sitting comfort evaluation.

Evaluation and Prediction of Driver Comfort Using Body Pressure Sensors

Abstract:Information of pressure patterns at the driver-seat interface is very useful for the design of seats. However, a clear and consistent relationship between interface pressure and driver physiological state like comfort and discomfort was not identified. This study examined associations between three subjective ratings (overall, comfort, and discomfort) and over 200 measures describing driver–seat interface contact pressure, force and area and ratios of local to whole body. This requires quantitative and dynamic analyses of body pressure distribution. Each of eight subjects performed a simulated driving task for 100 minutes in a driving simulator. The body-seat interface pressures were measured continuously, and the subjective ratings were surveyed at the prescribed interval. In this study, it was clarified that there was a possibility to predict physiological state (mainly comfort/discomfort) from several body pressure variables. And some specific approaches were proposed for the intervention of the drivers physiological state, such as decreasing the force ratio, area ratio and pressure ratio levels in the left buttock and the left thigh, and balancing of the contact area ratio of buttocks and the force ratio of both thighs.
Improving wheelchair user sitting posture to alleviate lumbar fatigue: a study utilizing sEMG and pressure sensors

Abstract:Background: The wheelchair is a widely used rehabilitation device, which is indispensable for people with limited mobility. In the process of using a wheelchair, they often face the situation of sitting for a long time, which is easy to cause fatigue of the waist muscles of the user. Therefore, this paper hopes to provide more scientific guidance and suggestions for the daily use of wheelchairs by studying the relationship between the development of muscle fatigue and sitting posture. Methods: First, we collected surface Electromyography (sEMG) of human vertical spine muscle and analyzed it in the frequency domain. The obtained Mean Power Frequency (MPF) was used as the dependent variable. Then, the pose information of the human body, including the percentage of pressure points, span, and center of mass as independent variables, was collected by the array of thin film pressure sensors, and analyzed by a multivariate nonlinear regression model. Results: When the centroid row coordinate of the cushion pressure point is about 16(range, 7.7-16.9), the cushion pressure area percentage is about 80%(range, 70.8%-89.7%), and the cushion pressure span range is about 27(range, 25-31), the backrest pressure point centroid row coordinate is about 15(range, 9.1-18.2), the backrest pressure area percentage is about 35%(range, 11.8%-38.7%), and the backrest pressure span range is about 16(range, 9-22). At this time, the MPF value of the subjects decreased by a small percentage, and the fatigue development of the muscles was slower. In addition, the pressure area percentage at the seat cushion is a more sensitive independent variable, too large or too small pressure area percentage will easily cause lumbar muscle fatigue. Conclusion: The results show that people should sit in the middle and back of the seat cushion when riding the wheelchair, so that the Angle of the hip joint can be in a natural state, and the thigh should fully contact the seat cushion to avoid the weight of the body concentrated on the buttocks; The back should be fully in contact with the back of the wheelchair to reduce the burden on the waist, and the spine posture can be adjusted appropriately according to personal habits, but it is necessary to avoid maintaining a chest sitting position for a long time, which will cause the lumbar spine to be in an unnatural physiological Angle and easily lead to fatigue of the waist muscles.

Abstract:The vehicular market is undergoing a profound transformation that includes a trend toward fully automated driving. When travelling in automated systems, the main task is no longer driving. Therefore, the interior design of automated vehicles requires a renovation to adapt to new use cases. With this motivation, the use case of sleeping while travelling was chosen for this user study, in which different seat configuration conditions were evaluated. The three preselected seat positions for this research included the upright, reclined and flat seat positions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the comfort of different seat angles in meeting the need to sleep in a moving vehicle. Since the physical experience of the occupants with a high-fidelity seat prototype is essential to evaluate the new interior concept of the vehicle of the future, in this study, the experimental participants were asked about their perception of comfort and overall user experience while travelling by car under close-to-real test conditions. Therefore, the primary objective of this evaluation was to explore different seat configurations and find the most suitable seat position for the use case of sleeping in a car while moving. Our findings suggest that users prefer reclining and flat seats in short-/medium- and long-term use cases, respectively.
