Abstract:Objective: To investigate anisometropia's prevalence and associated factors in school-aged children. Methods: A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted in Shandong Province, China, including children aged 4 to 17 from 9 schools. Anisometropia was defined as the differences between the two eyes in spherical equivalent (SE) or cylinder degree of 1.00 diopter (D) or more [SE or cylindrical (CYL) difference ≥ 1.00 D] after cycloplegic autorefraction. The Generalized Linear Model (GLM) was used to analyze the effects of ocular parameters [the differences between eyes in axial length (AL), habitual visual acuity (HVA), and corneal astigmatism (CA)] and lifestyle parameters (time spent indoor near work and outdoor activities) on anisometropia. Results: Total 4,198 (93.4%) of the 4,494 children were included in the statistical analysis. The mean difference in inter-eye SE was 0.42 ± 0.61 D. The prevalence of anisometropia was 13.2% (95%CI: 12.1 to 14.2%) (SE anisometropia's prevalence:10.3%; CYL anisometropia's prevalence: 4.1%), increased with older age (OR = 1.10, P = 0.002), the worse myopic eye (myopia vs. premyopia, OR = 1.87, P = 0.002), the worse hyperopic eye (hyperopia vs. premyopia, OR = 1.77, P = 0.013), larger difference in inter-eye AL (0.1–0.3 vs. ≤ 0.1, OR = 1.67, P = 0.008; >0.3 vs. ≤ 0.1, OR = 28.61, P 0.2 vs. ≤ 0.2, OR = 3.01, P < 0.001), CA (OR = 6.24, P 100 vs. ≤ 100, OR = 1.59, P = 0.001), longer indoor near work time per day on weekends (4–8 vs. <4, OR = 1.41, P = 0.038; ≥8 vs. <4, OR = 1.40, P = 0.131), and shorter outdoor activity time per day on weekdays (≥1 vs. <1, OR = 0.75, P = 0.046) in multivariable analysis. In the SE anisometropia group, the difference in inter-eye AL (>0.3 vs. ≤ 0.1, β: 0.556, 95%CI: 0.050 to 1.063), HVA (>0.2 vs. ≤ 0.2, β: 0.511, 95%CI: 0.312 to 0.710), and CA (β: 0.488, 95%CI: 0.289 to 0.688), stereoacuity (>100 vs. ≤ 100, β: 0.299, 95%CI: 0.110 to 0.488) had a positive impact on the difference in inter-eye SE. Conclusions: Ocular parameters and lifestyle parameters are associated with the occurrence of anisometropia in children aged 4 to 17 years, including the difference in inter-eye AL, HVA, CA, stereoacuity, indoor near work time, and outdoor activity time. Preventing myopia and early treating anisometropic amblyopia may be effective ways to reduce the prevalence of anisometropia.

Abstract:Introduction: Myopia is an increasingly serious health problem in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of myopia and the factors associated with it among students in Nantong, China, to show the current status of myopia prevention. Methods: This school-based, cross-sectional study examined students from all high schools in an urban area of Nantong, China. At least two classes were randomly selected from each grade of each school. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect the required information.Univariate analyses were performed to identify associations between myopia and various parameters.Non-cycloplegic autorefraction and visual acuity were assessed for each student. Factors that were statistically significant in univariate analyses were selected for multivariate analyses. Myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent refraction of ≤ -0.5 diopters. Results: The completion percentage of students out of the whole high school was 6.5%.The overall prevalence of myopia was 94%. The response percentage of the number of validated questionnaires was 90.2%, of which 50.2% (n = 1,466) were from male participants, and 49.8% (n = 1,452) were from female participants. The mean (SD) of age was 15.22±1.75 years, ranging from 12–18 years. Factors such as female sex, older age, parental myopia, sitting in the back of the classroom, increased homework time, and minimal outdoor activity were significantly associated with a higher risk of myopia (P < 0.05). In the myopic population, most students (67.9%) did not take measures to prevent further progression of myopia. Conclusion: The prevalence of myopia among high school students was 94%. Female sex, older age, parental myopia, sitting in the back of the classroom, increased homework time, and minimal outdoor activity were significantly associated with a higher risk of myopia. Most students with myopia (67.9%) did not take measures to prevent further progression of myopia.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the associated factors leading to myopia in primary school students in a relatively developed region in Hangzhou.Methods This was a cross-sectional study.By cluster sampling,primary students from 5 schools (grades 1-6) in Zhaohui District,Hangzhou,were recruited for this investigation.The right eye was examined and data were collected on spherical refraction,cylinder refraction,axial length and corneal curvature.Information was also obtained on family history,time spent on near reading after school and on weekends,and time spent on outdoor activities both after school and on weekends.A one-way ANOVA was used for analysis.Results There were significant differences in gender,family history,time spent on near reading and outdoor activity between myopic and non-myopic groups.Females were more likely to be myopic than males (63.7％ vs.67.4％).The students with myopic parents (F=10.559,P＜0.05) or those who spent more time on near reading on weekends (F=7.555,P＜0.05) and after school (F=2.492,P＜0.05) were more likely to be myopic.On the other hand,outdoor activities both after school (F=11.351,P＜0.05) and during weekends (F=6.387,P＜0.05) reduced the prevalence of myopia.Conclusion Myopia in primary school students is associated with gender,family history,near reading and outdoor activity.So both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of myopia.The effect of environmental factors,especially near reading,is time-dependent,and ultraviolet exposure during outdoor activity plays a significant role.

Abstract:Abstract Background China has been undergoing dramatic economic development, accompanied by increased education load on the young children. This study is to investigate the prevalence, type, severity, and associated risk factors of astigmatism in school students in eastern China. Method In this cross-sectional school-based study, students underwent refraction using NIDEK non-cycloplegic autorefractor. Astigmatism was defined as cylinder 1.5 diopter (D) or greater, and high astigmatism was defined as cylinder 3.0 D or greaterMultivariate regression models were used to determine factors associated with astigmatism. Results Among 4801 children (55% male) with mean age (±standard deviation) 12.3 (±3.8) years, 680 (14.2, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 13.2–15.2%) had astigmatism (85% were with-the-rule) and 103 (2.2, 95% CI: 1.8–2.6%) had high astigmatism. The prevalence rate of astigmatism was 7–8% in grades 4 or below, 15–16% in grades 6–8, 20% in grade 9, and 20–25% in grade 10 or above. In multivariate analyses, higher grade and male gender were associated with higher prevalence of astigmatism (all p < 0.0001) and high astigmatism ( p = 0.04 for grade, p = 0.001 for gender). When multivariate models were further adjusted by spherical equivalent, only gender remained statistically associated with astigmatism (odds ratio (OR) = 1.65, p < 0.0001) and high astigmatism (OR = 2.21, p = 0.0004), myopic and hyperopic refractive error were significantly associated with higher risk of astigmatism and high astigmatism (all p < 0.0001). Conclusion Astigmatism is common in Chinese school-age children and increases with grade. Majority of astigmatism is with-the-rule. Male gender and myopic or hyperopic refractive error are significantly associated with higher prevalence and severity of astigmatism.

Prevalence and Associations of Myopic Anisometropia in Chinese Adults.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the prevalence and associations of myopic anisometropia in Chinese adults. Methods: A total of 3,791 Chinese refractive surgery candidates with myopia (25.15 +/- 7.09 years old, Mean +/- SD) were recruited. All eyes underwent a standardized ophthalmological examination. Associations between myopic anisometropia and age, gender, spherical ametropia, astigmatism, and axial length (AL) were analyzed by means of the chi-squared test, nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney test, binomial logistic regression analyses, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: The mean myopic anisometropic level was 0.96 D and prevalence of myopic anisometropia was 29.62% (defined as myopic anisometropia >= 1.00 D). The prevalence and severity of myopic anisometropia increased with age, larger interocular AL difference, and higher cylindrical power (all P<0.001). Myopic anisometropia showed a U-shaped correlation with spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error and V-shaped correlations with AL, J0 and J45. Myopic anisometropia was most strongly associated with interocular AL difference (P<0.001). Conclusions: Compared with previous reports, this study revealed an even higher prevalence of myopic anisometropia and showed a U-shaped correlation with SE and a V-shaped correlation with AL. These results indicate that the formation of myopic anisometropia could be related to neural control in the binocular AL growth balance. Further study is needed to clarify this presumption.
[Prevalence of myopia and influencing factors among primary and middle school students in 6 provinces of China]

Abstract:Objective: To understand the prevalence of myopia in primary and middle school students in 6 provinces and the possible influencing factors. Methods: Primary and middle school students were selected through multistage cluster sampling in 60 primary and middle schools in 6 provinces in China. The questionnaire survey and eyesight test were conducted among all the students selected according to the national student's physique and health survey protocol. Pearson chi-square test and binary multivariate logistic regression analysis were done to identify the influencing factors for myopia in students. Results: The prevalence of myopia among primary and middle school students surveyed was 55.7%, the gender specific difference was statistically significant (59.7% for girls, 51.9% for boys) (P<0.01). The prevalence of myopia increased with age obviously. The prevalence was 35.8% in age group 6-8 years, 58.9% in age group 10-12 years, 73.4% in age group 13-15 years and 81.2% in age group 16-18 years, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). Single factor and multivariate analysis showed that parents' myopia, distance between computer screen and eyes, distance less than 30 cm between eyes and book while reading, distance less than 10 cm between chest and the table edge while studying, distance less than 3 cm between fingers and pen tip, sleep time, average outdoor activity time during last week, school sport activities in the afternoon, the size of television set at home, time spent on watching TV and playing computer were the influencing factors for myopia. Conclusions: The prevalence of myopia is till high in primary and middle school students. Myopia is associated with both genetic factors and individual eye health related behaviors.

Abstract:The creation of a clinical application requires models that describe the structure of data in a way that can be displayed, exchanged and stored. A number of approaches for this have been proposed and are in widespread use. However, these are often complex and/or have shortcomings in the breadth of data that they are able to represent. The annotations facility provided by many computer languages could be used to include information shaping the development and run-time behaviour of a clinical application. If this were comprehensive, then annotations alone would be sufficient for conceptual modelling. A model for representing such annotations is presented and some examples shown and discussed. The paper concludes that such a formalism is simple to use while developing semantic concepts but is capable of representing information from many models simultaneously. It is well suited to the needs of clinical teams seeking consensus on the structure of records.
Prevalence of Myopia and Vision Impairment in School Students in Eastern China

Abstract:Background : Prevention of myopia has become a public health priority in China. This study is to investigate the prevalence of myopia and vision impairment, and their associated factors in school students in eastern China. Method: In this cross-sectional school-based study of 4804 students from 18 schools ranging from kindergarten to high school, students underwent refraction using non-cycloplegic autorefractor and visual acuity testing using logMAR chart with tumbling E. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent (SPHE) ≤ -0.5 diopter (D) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) 20/25 or worse. High myopia was defined as SPHE ≤ -6.0 D and UCVA 20/25 or worse. Vision impairment was defined as UCVA 20/40 or worse. Logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with myopia and vision impairment. Results: Among 4804 children (55% male) with mean age (standard deviation) 12.3 (3.8) years, 3031 (63.1%, 95% CI: 61.7-64.4%) had myopia, 452 (9.4%, 95% CI: 8.6-10.3%) had high myopia, and 2646 (55.1%, 95% CI: 53.7-56.5%) had vision impairment. The prevalence rate of myopia increased with grade in a non-linear manner, 12% in kindergarten, 32% in grade 2, 69% in grade 5, and approximately 90% by grade 10 or above. The prevalence rate of high myopia was relatively low in grade 4 or below (<1.5%), 4-7% in grade 5 to 7, 13-15% in grade 8-9, and >20% in grade 10 to 12. The prevalence rate of vision impairment was 3.7% in kindergarten, 36.6% in elementary school, 76.7% in middle school and 86.5% in high school students. Higher grade (p<0.0001), female (p<0.0001) and higher school workload (p=0.007) were independently associated with higher prevalence rates of myopia and vision impairment, while higher grade (p<0.0001) and higher school workload (p<0.0001) were independently associated with higher prevalence of high myopia. Conclusion: Prevalence of myopia and vision impairment was high among Chinese school students and increased with grade in a non-linear manner, reaching alarming high in high school students accompanied by high prevalence of high myopia. Increasing study burden on school students at younger age plays an important role on the higher prevalence rate of myopia and vision impairment.

Abstract:Myopia is a growing concern worldwide, especially among adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of myopia in adolescents aged 12-15 in Shandong Province, China. This cross-sectional study adhered to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines and involved stratified random cluster sampling of 128,678 students from 186 middle schools across 17 cities in Shandong Province. Data collection was conducted from March to April 2024. We excluded students with organic eye diseases, abnormal binocular vision functions, or a history of eye injuries or surgeries. Myopia was assessed using the standard logarithmic visual acuity chart and autorefractor without inducing ciliary muscle paralysis. A comprehensive questionnaire survey was conducted to gather demographic characteristics and daily life behaviors. With the chi-squared test for univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression for identifying significant factors. This study included 126,375 participants, with a gender distribution of 51.02% male and 48.98% female. The overall prevalence of myopia was 71.34%. Higher prevalence was observed in girls (72.26%) compared to boys (70.45%), and the prevalence increased with age, peaking at 73.12% in 15-year-olds. Urban residents had a higher prevalence (71.86%) than rural (70.39%). Factors such as increased frequency of eye usage while lying down or leaning forward, frequent use of eyes while walking or riding in a car, prolonged screen time, and extended homework duration were associated with higher odds of developing myopia. Conversely, higher frequency of outdoor exercise, maintaining proper posture during reading and writing, greater distance from eyes to screen, and longer sleep duration were associated with lower odds. Additionally, female gender, older age, urban residence, and parental history of myopia increased the risk. The high prevalence of myopia among adolescents in Shandong Province was influenced by a combination of demographic, behavioral, and environmental factors. The study highlighted the importance of lifestyle modifications, such as increasing outdoor activities and maintaining proper visual habits, limiting the duration of screen exposure and homework sessions, and extending sleep duration, to mitigate the risk of developing myopia. These findings underscored the need for targeted public health interventions and educational campaigns to address this significant public health issue.
Prevalence and association of uncorrected refractive error among Chinese adolescents: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Uncorrected refractive error (URE) is one of the main causes of visual impairments. URE may reduce interaction and learning in the classroom, leading to social isolation, irreversible amblyopia, lack of external knowledge, and restrictions on education and employment opportunities. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence and related factors of URE in adolescents using epidemiological surveys and questionnaire surveys related to lifestyle habits. Methods: A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted in Nantong, China, including adolescents 12-19 years of age from 16 schools. URE was defined as presenting visual acuity worse than 6/12 and improving to ≥ 1 lines after correction in either eye. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate specific correlations between URE and related lifestyle parameters. Non-cycloplegic autorefraction was assessed for each adolescent. Results: A total of 2,910 adolescents were analyzed, of which 50.3% (n = 1,465) were male, and 49.7% (n = 1,445) were female. The mean age was 15.23 ± 1.77 years. The overall prevalence of URE was 23.7%. The total prevalence of REC and eREC was 85.1% and 71.7%, respectively, and both of them showed an increasing trend with age (Ptrend = 0.018 and Ptrend = 0.019, respectively). A higher prevalence of URE was related to myopia, anisometropia, and increased daily use of electronic products. Timely visual examination by medical institutions, more extracurricular homework, and older age were protective factors for URE. Among the 689 adolescents with URE, 362 (52.5%) did not receive any refractive correction, and 327 (47.5%) used corrected glasses. Conclusion: URE was highly prevalent among adolescents in China. Myopia was the most important risk factor for URE. The impact of anisometropia and increased daily use of electronic devices on URE was significant. Timely visual examinations by medical institutions served as an effective protective factor against URE. Further research on adjusting intervention strategies is therefore needed to eliminate preventable visual impairments.

Abstract:Background: We conducted this study to investigate the prevalence of myopia among school students in Ningbo and to explore the associations between reading and writing postures and myopia. Methods: A population-based and cross-sectional study was conducted, and 3,256 school students aged 8–19 years were recruited. Each enrolled subject was assessed for uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) using a standard logarithmic visual acuity E-chart and a non-cycloplegic autorefraction examination. Self-administered questionnaires were used to investigate myopia-related reading and writing postures and behavioral habits among school students. Results: The prevalence of myopia among primary school, middle school, and high school students was 61.49, 81.43, and 89.72%, respectively. Regarding the associations between reading and writing postures and myopia, we identified that a reading distance >33 cm is a protective factor for myopia in female students [odds ratio (OR) = 0.31, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.15–0.64], in both primary school (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.30–0.99) and middle school (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.15–0.90). Conclusions: A reading distance >33 cm can be used as an additional measure to prevent and control myopia. Proper postural measures for reading and writing may have educational and public health benefits.

Abstract:Purposes This study was to estimate the prevalence of myopia among primary school students in Hefei, China, and evaluate the association of educational environment with myopia. Methods This study was a cross-sectional study, and recruited primary school students in grades 1–6. Children underwent a stepwise ophthalmic examination, which included visual acuity and objective cycloplegic refraction to identify children with myopia. Under the guidance of parents, children completed a questionnaire, including gender, region, grade and several indicators related to education. The study analyzed the risk factors by using a logistic regression and assessed feature importance by using a random forest algorithm. Results A total of 3,596 primary school students were involved in this analysis, and the overall prevalence of myopia was 27.1%. Gender, grade, education level of the father, education level of the mother, academic level of children, hours of homework per day on weekends, number of after-school tutoring per week and frequency of extracurricular reading were significantly associated with myopia. There was no significant association between the amount of homework per day on school days and myopia after adjusting for covariates. In terms of educational environment, the top 3 factors were academic level of children, homework on weekends and after-school tutoring. Conclusions Educational environment with high educational loads was associated with the high prevalence of myopia. Reducing the burden of studying, especially that after class, was an effective way to prevent myopia.

Increasing prevalence of myopia and the impact of education in primary-school students in Xi'an, north-western of China

Abstract:Purpose: The present study was performed to detect the prevalence of myopia among primary-school students in Xi'an, north-western of China. Methods: The present study was a school-based study with students aged from 6 to 13 years old. All the individuals underwent ophthalmological examination and spherical equivalent (SE) of refractive error were measured with non-cycloplegic refraction. Myopia was defined as a SE of ≤ -0.5 diopters (D), and further divided into three stratified groups based on SE: low myopia (≤ -0.5 to >-3.0 D), moderate myopia (≤ -3.0 to >-6.0 D), and high myopia (≤ -6.0 D). Relative risk factors, including age, sex, grade and ethnicity were investigated using questionnaire. Results: A total of 4,680 individuals were eligible for this survey and 4,654 (99.4% participation rate) were finally included (51.2% boys). The mean age of participants was 8.756 ± 1.727 years. The whole city-level prevalence of total myopia was 57.1% (95% CI: 55.7–58.6%). Additionally, the prevalence of low, moderate, and high myopia was 45.0% (95% CI: 43.5–46.4%), 11.1% (95% CI: 10.2–12.0%), and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.7–1.3%), respectively. Moreover, grade (education level) instead of age, sex and ethnicity was the most essential risk factor for prevalence of overall myopia (OR = 1.844, 95% CI: 1.605–2.119), and an increase of prevalence by 84.4% per grade was seen. Furthermore, similar associations of grade were significant with low myopia (OR = 1.613, 95% CI: 1.385–1.877) and moderate myopia (OR = 2.186, 95% CI: 1.693–2.823), meanwhile, prevalence of low myopia and moderate myopia demonstrated an increase of prevalence by 61.3 and 118.6% per grade, respectively. None of the factors included in the present study was significant risk factor for high myopia. Conclusions: The present study investigated a non-negligible high prevalence of myopia among primary-school students in Xi'an, north-western of China, and a gradual increasing in proportion with education level.

Abstract:Purpose This study investigates the prevalence and progression of myopia among primary and secondary school students in Xuzhou City, China, during one academic year. Methods The study employed a prospective research design and utilized a whole-group sampling method to conduct non-cycloplegic spot photo screenings on 37,938 students from 44 primary and secondary schools in Xuzhou City, China. A one-year study was conducted to gather spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and subsequent analysis was carried out to explore the disparities in myopia prevalence among primary and secondary school students within the same academic year, as well as the progression of myopia. Results During the 2022 academic year, the overall prevalence of myopia in the first and second semesters was 62.6 and 64.2% respectively, indicating an increasing trend. Particularly in primary school (Grades 1–6), the prevalence of myopia increased with higher grade levels, and significant variations in myopia prevalence were observed mainly in grades 1–3 and 7 ( p < 0.05). The incidence rate of myopia in middle school remained stable, while in primary school, there was a positive correlation between myopia incidence and the grade level, with the highest rate of 20.1% in grade 6. Among the myopic population, the median value of spherical equivalent refraction slightly decreased between the two semesters. The proportion of high myopia increased among students in grades 5–8. Conclusion Our study revealed that within one academic year, the prevalence of myopia and the severity of myopia have significantly increased in Xuzhou City, China, accompanied by an increase in the proportion of high myopia. For different grade levels, we should adopt personalized prevention and control measures, with a particular focus on lower grade levels and students who have just entered a new grade.

High prevalence of myopia and low hyperopia reserve in 4411 Chinese primary school students and associated risk factors

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the prevalence of myopia in Chinese primary school students and their ocular biometrics including axial length (AL), corneal radius of curvature (CRC) and spherical equivalent refraction (SER). To analyze their association with potential myopia risk factors, such as body mass index (BMI), cram school, time of outdoor activity and electronic screen use. Methods In this cross-sectional study of 4500 primary school students from 5 schools, participants underwent refraction using non-cycloplegic autorefractor and visual acuity testing. A follow-up study in the same schools was conducted in 2022. Myopia was defined as SER ≤ -0.50 diopter (D) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) < 0.00 logMAR (6/6). Logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with myopia. Results After excluding 389 participants, the overall prevalence of myopia was 33.6%. The prevalence of high myopia was 0.6%. The prevalence of myopia in girls was significantly higher than that in boys (37.6% vs. 30.0%, p < 0.001). The height, weight and BMI were significantly associated with AL ( r = 0.471, r = 0.440, r = 0.276, p < 0.001, respectively). AL/CRC ratio was more highly correlated with SER than AL alone. Regression analysis showed that AL/CRC and hyperopia reserve were associated with myopia onset in the subsequent year ( F = 201.557, p < 0.001; F = 68.934, p < 0.001). The cut point of hyperopia reserve for myopia in the subsequent year for grade 1 students was + 0.31D. Age ( p < 0.001), parental myopia ( p = 0.001) and lack of outdoor activity between classes ( p = 0.049) were independently associated with higher prevalence rates of myopia. Conclusion The prevalence of myopia among Chinese schoolchildren is alarming high. Consistent with previous cross-sectional data, AL/CRC and hyperopia reserve could function as myopia detection indicators. The hyperopia reserve among children aged between 6 ~ 7 years was low. Healthcare providers need to raise parents' awareness of the importance of regular eye examination and proper optical correction.
