Abstract:Large language models (LLMs) and dialogue agents represent a significant shift in artificial intelligence (AI) research, particularly with the recent release of the GPT family of models. ChatGPT's generative capabilities and versatility across technical and creative domains led to its widespread adoption, marking a departure from more limited deployments of previous AI systems. While society grapples with the emerging cultural impacts of this new societal-scale technology, critiques of ChatGPT's impact within machine learning research communities have coalesced around its performance or other conventional safety evaluations relating to bias, toxicity, and "hallucination." We argue that these critiques draw heavily on a particular conceptualization of the "human-centered" framework, which tends to cast atomized individuals as the key recipients of technology's benefits and detriments. In this article, we direct attention to another dimension of LLMs and dialogue agents' impact: their effects on social groups, institutions, and accompanying norms and practices. By analyzing ChatGPT's social impact through a social-centered framework, we challenge individualistic approaches in AI development and contribute to ongoing debates around the ethical and responsible deployment of AI systems. We hope this effort will call attention to more comprehensive and longitudinal evaluation tools (e.g., including more ethnographic analyses and participatory approaches) and compel technologists to complement human-centered thinking with social-centered approaches.

Abstract:The increasing popularity of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has led to growing concerns about their safety, security risks, and ethical implications. This paper aims to provide an overview of the different types of security risks associated with ChatGPT, including malicious text and code generation, private data disclosure, fraudulent services, information gathering, and producing unethical content. We present an empirical study examining the effectiveness of ChatGPT's content filters and explore potential ways to bypass these safeguards, demonstrating the ethical implications and security risks that persist in LLMs even when protections are in place. Based on a qualitative analysis of the security implications, we discuss potential strategies to mitigate these risks and inform researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals about the complex security challenges posed by LLMs like ChatGPT. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the ethical and security implications of LLMs, underscoring the need for continued research in this area.

Abstract:The introduction of large language models (LLMs) that allow iterative "chat" in late 2022 is a paradigm shift that enables generation of text often indistinguishable from that written by humans. LLM-based chatbots have immense potential to improve academic work efficiency, but the ethical implications of their fair use and inherent bias must be considered. In this editorial, we discuss this technology from the academic's perspective with regard to its limitations and utility for academic writing, education, and programming. We end with our stance with regard to using LLMs and chatbots in academia, which is summarized as (1) we must find ways to effectively use them, (2) their use does not constitute plagiarism (although they may produce plagiarized text), (3) we must quantify their bias, (4) users must be cautious of their poor accuracy, and (5) the future is bright for their application to research and as an academic tool.

Abstract:Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently gathered attention with the release of ChatGPT, a user-centered chatbot released by OpenAI. In this perspective article, we retrace the evolution of LLMs to understand the revolution brought by ChatGPT in the artificial intelligence (AI) field. The opportunities offered by LLMs in supporting scientific research are multiple and various models have already been tested in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks in this domain. The impact of ChatGPT has been huge for the general public and the research community, with many authors using the chatbot to write part of their articles and some papers even listing ChatGPT as an author. Alarming ethical and practical challenges emerge from the use of LLMs, particularly in the medical field for the potential impact on public health. Infodemic is a trending topic in public health and the ability of LLMs to rapidly produce vast amounts of text could leverage misinformation spread at an unprecedented scale, this could create an "AI-driven infodemic," a novel public health threat. Policies to contrast this phenomenon need to be rapidly elaborated, the inability to accurately detect artificial-intelligence-produced text is an unresolved issue.

Given the far-reaching consequences of models such as ChatGPT, we believe we have a responsibility to take a leading role in highlighting potential policy implications to senior decision makers. A technology such as ChatGPT has the potential to impact a wide array of policy areas. We highlight some of those below. Abstract:A 50-year-old healthy woman started daily treatment with six iodine-containing kelp tablets (Kelpasan), containing 200 mg of kelp each, to lose weight; she took no other medication. Within two months she developed clinical and laboratory evidence of hyperthyroidism, which resolved spontaneously following discontinuation of the tablets. A causal relationship between the intake of the kelp preparation and the thyrotoxic episode could not be established beyond all possible doubt, but the clinical picture and clear temporal relationship strongly pointed in this direction.

Abstract:ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) created by OpenAI that has been carefully trained on a large amount of data. It has revolutionized the field of natural language processing (NLP) and has pushed the boundaries of LLM capabilities. ChatGPT has played a pivotal role in enabling widespread public interaction with generative artificial intelligence (GAI) on a large scale. It has also sparked research interest in developing similar technologies and investigating their applications and implications. In this paper, our primary goal is to provide a concise survey on the current lines of research on ChatGPT and its evolution. We considered both the glass box and black box views of ChatGPT, encompassing the components and foundational elements of the technology, as well as its applications, impacts, and implications. The glass box approach focuses on understanding the inner workings of the technology, and the black box approach embraces it as a complex system, and thus examines its inputs, outputs, and effects. This paves the way for a comprehensive exploration of the technology and provides a road map for further research and experimentation. We also lay out essential foundational literature on LLMs and GAI in general and their connection with ChatGPT. This overview sheds light on existing and missing research lines in the emerging field of LLMs, benefiting both public users and developers. Furthermore, the paper delves into the broad spectrum of applications and significant concerns in fields such as education, research, healthcare, finance, etc.

Abstract:Objective: ChatGPT is the first large language model (LLM) to reach a large, mainstream audience. Its rapid adoption and exploration by the population at large has sparked a wide range of discussions regarding its acceptable and optimal integration in different areas. In a hybrid (virtual and in-person) panel discussion event, we examined various perspectives regarding the use of ChatGPT in education, research, and healthcare. Materials and methods: We surveyed in-person and online attendees using an audience interaction platform (Slido). We quantitatively analyzed received responses on questions about the use of ChatGPT in various contexts. We compared pairwise categorical groups with a Fisher's Exact. Furthermore, we used qualitative methods to analyze and code discussions. Results: We received 420 responses from an estimated 844 participants (response rate 49.7%). Only 40% of the audience had tried ChatGPT. More trainees had tried ChatGPT compared with faculty. Those who had used ChatGPT were more interested in using it in a wider range of contexts going forwards. Of the three discussed contexts, the greatest uncertainty was shown about using ChatGPT in education. Pros and cons were raised during discussion for the use of this technology in education, research, and healthcare. Discussion: There was a range of perspectives around the uses of ChatGPT in education, research, and healthcare, with still much uncertainty around its acceptability and optimal uses. There were different perspectives from respondents of different roles (trainee vs faculty vs staff). More discussion is needed to explore perceptions around the use of LLMs such as ChatGPT in vital sectors such as education, healthcare and research. Given involved risks and unforeseen challenges, taking a thoughtful and measured approach in adoption would reduce the likelihood of harm.

Abstract:This article seeks to illuminate the ethical challenges and concerns presented by the utilization of the large language model, ChatGPT. Five critical ethical dimensions as proposed by Laudon and Laudon – Information rights and obligations, Property rights and obligations, Accountability and control, System quality, and Quality of life – will serve as the analytical framework to explore the pertinent issues. Although our investigation revealed that AI technologies like ChatGPT have tremendous potential for societal advancement they also present complex ethical challenges. The implications of our research have impact not only for developers of large language models but also developers of AI technologies in general, policy makers, end-users of these AI applications, and society as whole. Based on our findings we propose key recommendations to address the current concerns with respect to the ethical issues surrounding large language models. By assessing these ethical dimensions within the context of ChatGPT, this paper underscores the importance of developing comprehensive ethical guidelines and policies in the era of increasingly sophisticated AI applications.

Abstract:Introduction: the JLE editors analyse the scope and depth of the subject area of ChatGPT and related topics based on the Scopus database. The Scopus statistics prove a skyrocketing rise in the number of publications in the field in question during 2023. The major alarming themes cover authorship and integrity related to AI-assisted writing, threats to educational practices, medicine, and malevolent uses of ChatGPT. Keywords Explained: the key terminology is defined, including generative pre-trained transformers (GPT); ChatGPT; artificial intelligence (AI); AI chatbots; natural language processing (NLP); large language models; Open AI; large language model (LLM). International Research on ChatGPT: as of September 24 2023, the Scopus database has indexed 1,935 publications, with “ChatGPT” in the title, abstract, or keywords. A skyrocketing rise in the number of research has been reported since the early days of 2023. 1,925 indexed publications out of 1,935 were published in 2023. Most of them came from the USA, India, the UK, and China. The number of documents indexed in the Scopus database as well as PubMed, arXiv and others are exponentially rising. ChatGPT in Education: the academic community has been actively discussing the challenges education will face in the era of ChatGPT in the context of the fundamental threats posed to the educational system. The latter include assessment procedures, information accuracy, and skill devaluation. As many complex technologies, generative pre-trained transformers are ambivalent in nature, providing a great potential for learning and education at large, including new approaches based on critical thinking and awareness of the pros and cons of AI. ChatGPT in Science: great prospects for text generation and improvements in language quality adjoin to dubious authorship and potentially inconsistent and erroneous parts in the AI-produced texts. Publishers and journals are working out new publishing policies, including publishing ethics towards AI-assisted or AI-improved submissions. Conclusion: JLE is planning to revise its editorial policy to address the new challenges from AI technologies. JLE editors welcome new submissions of research articles and reviews as well as special issues on ChatGPT and related themes, with potential applications of chatbots in education, innovative approaches to writing assignments, facilitating personalized learning, academic integrity issues related to AI-supported writing, etc. in focus.

Abstract:The advent of ChatGPT by OpenAI has prompted extensive discourse on its potential implications for science and higher education. While the impact on education has been a primary focus, there is limited empirical research on the effects of large language models (LLMs) and LLM-based chatbots on science and scientific practice. To investigate this further, we conducted a Delphi study involving 72 experts specialising in research and AI. The study focused on applications and limitations of LLMs, their effects on the science system, ethical and legal considerations, and the required competencies for their effective use. Our findings highlight the transformative potential of LLMs in science, particularly in administrative, creative, and analytical tasks. However, risks related to bias, misinformation, and quality assurance need to be addressed through proactive regulation and science education. This research contributes to informed discussions on the impact of generative AI in science and helps identify areas for future action.

Abstract:In the era of generative AI and specifically large language models (LLMs), exemplified by ChatGPT, the intersection of artificial intelligence and human reasoning has become a focal point of global attention. Unlike conventional search engines, LLMs go beyond mere information retrieval, entering into the realm of discourse culture. Their outputs mimic well-considered, independent opinions or statements of facts, presenting a pretense of wisdom. This paper explores the potential transformative impact of LLMs on democratic societies. It delves into the concerns regarding the difficulty in distinguishing ChatGPT-generated texts from human output. The discussion emphasizes the essence of authorship, rooted in the unique human capacity for reason—a quality indispensable for democratic discourse and successful collaboration within free societies. Highlighting the potential threats to democracy, this paper presents three arguments: the Substitution argument, the Authenticity argument, and the Facts argument. These arguments highlight the potential risks that are associated with an overreliance on LLMs. The central thesis posits that widespread deployment of LLMs may adversely affect the fabric of a democracy if not comprehended and addressed proactively and properly. In proposing a solution, we advocate for an emphasis on education as a means to mitigate risks. We suggest cultivating thinking skills in children, fostering coherent thought formulation, and distinguishing between machine-generated output and genuine, i.e., human, reasoning. The focus should be on the responsible development and usage of LLMs, with the goal of augmenting human capacities in thinking, deliberating and decision-making rather than substituting them.

Abstract:Large language models (LLMs) have recently become a popular topic in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, with companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Amazon, Tesla, and Apple (GAFA) investing heavily in their development. These models are trained on massive amounts of data and can be used for a wide range of tasks, including language translation, text generation, and question answering. However, the computational resources required to train and run these models are substantial, and the cost of hardware and electricity can be prohibitive for research labs that do not have the funding and resources of the GAFA. In this paper, we will examine the impact of LLMs on AI research. The pace at which such models are generated as well as the range of domains covered is an indication of the trend which not only the public but also the scientific community is currently experiencing. We give some examples on how to use such models in research by focusing on GPT3.5/ChatGPT3.4 and ChatGPT4 at the current state and show that such a range of capabilities in a single system is a strong sign of approaching general intelligence. Innovations integrating such models will also expand along the maturation of such AI systems and exhibit unforeseeable applications that will have important impacts on several aspects of our societies.

Abstract:ChatGPT has garnered unprecedented popularity since its release in November 2022. This artificial intelligence (AI) large language model (LLM) is designed to generate human-like text based on patterns found in massive amounts of data scraped from the internet. ChatGPT is significantly different from previous versions of GPT by its quality of output, capability to interact and hold human-like conversations, enormous speed, and ability to have its output refined by users or experts. New iterations of ChatGPT as well as open source and alternative LLMs, and ChatGPT plugins extend the current capabilities of ChatGPT and offer unlimited opportunities to change how we do things. Despite its newfound popularity and capabilities, ChatGPT is fraught with concerns such as cheating, misinformation, bias, abuse and misuse, and privacy and safety. On the other hand, the integration of ChatGPT in the classroom prompts us to envision better ways of providing instruction and assessment of writing skills. ChatGPT also provides unparalleled approaches for personalized learning. As educators, we must consider and deal with the serious concerns of using ChatGPT but simultaneously explore how this AI technology can enhance and extend current methods of instruction. In this paper, authors explain what ChatGPT is and how it works, and future iterations of ChatGPT. They also present concerns and opportunities, and educational implications of using ChatGPT in the classroom.

Abstract:ChatGPT, a conversational artificial intelligence model based on the generative pre-trained transformer GPT architecture, has garnered widespread attention due to its user-friendly nature and diverse capabilities. This technology enables users of all backgrounds to effortlessly engage in human-like conversations and receive coherent and intelligible responses. Beyond casual interactions, ChatGPT offers compelling prospects for scientific research, facilitating tasks like literature review and content summarization, ultimately expediting and enhancing the academic writing process. Still, in the field of medicine and surgery, it has already shown its endless potential in many tasks (enhancing decision-making processes, aiding in surgical planning and simulation, providing real-time assistance during surgery, improving postoperative care and rehabilitation, contributing to training, education, research, and development). However, it is crucial to acknowledge the model's limitations, encompassing knowledge constraints and the potential for erroneous responses, as well as ethical and legal considerations. Abstract:Large language models such as ChatGPT enable users to automatically produce text but also raise ethical concerns, for example about authorship and deception. This paper analyses and discusses some key philosophical assumptions in these debates, in particular assumptions about authorship and language and—our focus—the use of the appearance/reality distinction. We show that there are alternative views of what goes on with ChatGPT that do not rely on this distinction. For this purpose, we deploy the two phased approach of deconstruction and relate our finds to questions regarding authorship and language in the humanities. We also identify and respond to two common counter-objections in order to show the ethical appeal and practical use of our proposal.

Abstract:Large language models, e.g., Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (also known as ChatGPT), are currently contributing enormously to making artificial intelligence even more popular, especially among the general population. However, such chatbot models were developed as tools to support natural language communication between humans. Problematically, it is very much a "statistical correlation machine" (correlation instead of causality), and there are indeed ethical concerns associated with the use of AI language models including ChatGPT, such as bias, privacy, and abuse. This paper highlights specific ethical concerns about ChatGPT and articulates key challenges when ChatGPT is used in various applications. Practical recommendations for different stakeholders of ChatGPT are also proposed that can serve as checklist guidelines for those applying ChatGPT in their applications. These best practice examples are expected to motivate the ethical use of ChatGPT.

Abstract:This paper aims to highlight the potential applications and limits of a large language model (LLM) in healthcare. ChatGPT is a recently developed LLM that was trained on a massive dataset of text for dialogue with users. Although AI-based language models like ChatGPT have demonstrated impressive capabilities, it is uncertain how well they will perform in real-world scenarios, particularly in fields such as medicine where high-level and complex thinking is necessary. Furthermore, while the use of ChatGPT in writing scientific articles and other scientific outputs may have potential benefits, important ethical concerns must also be addressed. Consequently, we investigated the feasibility of ChatGPT in clinical and research scenarios: (1) support of the clinical practice, (2) scientific production, (3) misuse in medicine and research, and (4) reasoning about public health topics.
