Abstract:Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affects individuals' mental health that can result in fear of getting COVID-19 infection and depression. Prior research has demonstrated that both psychological capital and perceived social support are related to the severity of depression. Yet no study explored the direction of associations between these factors. This undermines the validity of psychological capital as a basis for health interventions. Methods: This study aimed to explore the association between psychological capital, perceived social support, employment pressure, and depressive symptoms during COVID-19. A cross-sectional design was employed in a sample of 708 Chinese senior medical students who were asked to complete an online questionnaire survey. Results: Results indicated that psychological capital negatively predicts depressive symptoms (β = −0.55, p < 0.001); perceived social support plays a mediating role in the impact of psychological capital on depressive symptoms (indirect = −0.11, SE = 0.02, p < 0.001, 95%CI [−0.16, −0.07]), and these associations were moderated by employment pressure. Medical students with high employment pressure, the negative impact of psychological capital on depressive symptoms was statistically significant (β = −0.37, SE = 0.05, p < 0.001, 95% CI [−0.046, −0.27]); when the perceived employment pressure was low, the negative effect of psychological capital on depressive symptoms, although significant, was stronger (β = −0.49, SE = 0.04, p < 0.001, 95% CI [−0.57, −0.40]). Discussion: The current study highlights that it is of great significance to address Chinese medical students' employment pressure and improve their mental health during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract:Background: Although life satisfaction is a predictor of depressive and anxiety symptoms, the mechanisms underlying this association are poorly understood. This study examined how psychological capital (PsyCap), a positive psychological state, mediated the association between life satisfaction and depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at three medical universities in China. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 583 students. Depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, life satisfaction, and PsyCap were measured anonymously. A hierarchical linear regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of life satisfaction on depressive and anxiety symptoms. Asymptotic and resampling strategies were used to examine how PsyCap mediates the association between life satisfaction and depressive and anxiety symptoms. Results: Life satisfaction was positively associated with PsyCap and its four components. There were significant negative associations between life satisfaction, psychological capital, resilience, optimism, and depressive and anxiety symptoms among medical students. Self-efficacy was negatively associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Psychological capital (a×b = -0.3201, BCa 95% CI: -0.3899, -0.2446; a×b = -0.2749, BCa 95% CI: -0.3817, -0.1996), resilience (a×b = -0.2103, BCa 95% CI: -0.2727, -0.1580; a×b = -0.1871, BCa 95% CI: -0.2520, -0.1414), optimism (a×b = -0.2100, BCa 95% CI: -0.3388, -0.1150; a×b = -0.1998, BCa 95% CI: -0.3307, -0.0980), and self-efficacy (a×b = -0.0916, BCa 95% CI: 0.0048, 0.11629; a×b = 0.1352, BCa 95% CI: 0.0336, 0.2117) significantly mediated the association between life satisfaction and depressive and anxiety symptoms. Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study, and causal relationships between the variables could not be ascertained. Self-reported questionnaire instruments were used for data collection, which may have recall bias. Conclusions: Life satisfaction and PsyCap can be used as positive resources to reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms among third-year Chinese medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological capital and its components (self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism) partially mediated the relationship between life satisfaction and depressive symptoms, and completely mediated the relationship between life satisfaction and anxiety symptoms. Therefore, improving life satisfaction and investing in psychological capital (especially self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism) should be included in the prevention and treatment of depressive and anxiety symptoms among third-year Chinese medical students. Additional attention is needed to pay for self-efficacy in such disadvantageous contexts.

Abstract:To the Editor. —Bone marrow necrosis, which has been described in sickle cell disease, infectious diseases, and cancer,1-6is a disorder rarely diagnosed during life. In the November 1982Archives(1982;142:2223-2225), Pardoll et al reported a case of bone marrow necrosis associated with sickle cell disease. Reticuloendothelial scans showed widespread abnormalities consistent with marrow infarction; widespread microvascular obstruction by masses of sickle cells seems plausible as a mechanism of marrow necrosis.5Nevertheless, the bone marrow necrosis pathogenesis is unknown in neoplasia and infectious diseases. We report a case of bone marrow necrosis diagnosed antemortem in a patient with gastric metastatic adenocarcinoma, where postmortem pathologic studies may bring further knowledge about necrosis physiopathology. Report of a Case. —A 60-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after three weeks of fever, dyspnea, and bone pain in the lower part of the back. Physical examination showed a severely ill patient, pale with petechia on the limbs, and necrosis in his right toes.

Abstract:Background Although professional identity is a strong predictor of career choice, only a few studies have reported on medical students' career attitude during a public health emergency. This study investigates the changes in medical students' professional identity and career attitude during the COVID-19 pandemic, evaluates their mental health and social support system under stress, and explores the relationship between their career attitude and other factors. Methods An online survey of 6,226 Chinese medical students was conducted to collect information on demographics, professional identity, and career attitude. The collected data were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and the Social Support Rating Scale. Results The results revealed that most (80.8%) of the participants did not change their career attitude and the professional identity of most participants strengthened, and they preferred to participate on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of depression and anxiety among medical students was 22.86% and 35.43%. Low social support, depressive symptoms, male gender, and higher grades were factors that negatively affected career attitude. Conclusions After the outbreak of the pandemic, it was necessary to conduct diversified professional identity research to support medical students, especially those with low social support and depressive symptoms.

Abstract:Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has become a global public health emergency, causing great psychological distress to nurses. It is unknown whether the pandemic will affect the work engagement of nurses, the relationship between psychological capital, job satisfaction, and work engagement among nurses, and whether there are differences between nurse specialists and general nurses during the pandemic. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare psychological capital, job satisfaction, and work engagement among nurse specialists and general nurses during the pandemic, as well as to test the role of job satisfaction as a mediator in the association between psychological capital and work engagement among nurses, and to examine whether the underlying mechanism of the relationship between psychological capital and job satisfaction differs between nurse specialists and general nurses. Materials and methods: A convenience sampling was used to assess a sample of 372 nurse specialists and 318 general nurses from nine provincial general hospitals in China to participate in the online survey. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires, including the following tools: self-designed socio-demographic questionnaire, psychological capital scale, job satisfaction scale, and work engagement scale. Results: Compared with general nurses, the nurse specialists had higher psychological capital, job satisfaction, and work engagement. Job satisfaction partially mediated the positive association between psychological capital and work engagement and the indirect effect was stronger in nurse specialists in comparison to general nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The findings provide important practical implications for future intervention programs aimed at enhancing nurses' work engagement, which may be realized through strengthening psychological capital and job satisfaction during the pandemic. Moreover, considering the cost-effectiveness of limited health care spending, nursing managers should pay more attention to the continuing professional development of young general nurses.

This study is aimed to examine the association between WPV and professional identity, and to further explore whether PsyCap can serve as a mediator between WPV and professional identity among Chinese doctors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December in Liaoning Province in China, in 2017. The study used a questionnaire consisting of Workplace Violence Scale (WVS), Occupational Identity Scale (OIS), Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ), as well as questions about demographic characteristics. Out of 1200 doctors, 995 (effective response rate of 82.92%) completed the questionnaire survey and became our final subjects. Hierarchical multiple regression and the asymptotic and resampling strategies were conducted to explore the mediating role of PsyCap in the relationship between WPV and professional identity. Results: After adjusting for demographic characteristics, WPV was negatively associated with professional identity (β=−0.37; P <0.01). Mediation analysis indicated that PsyCap was a mediator in the relationship between WPV and professional identity. Two dimensions of PsyCap: self-efficacy (a*b =−0.04, BCa 95% CI: (−0.08, −0.01); P <0.01) and hope (a*b =−0.04, BCa 95% CI: (−0.08, −0.01); P <0.01) also did exhibit mediating effects in the relationship between WPV and professional identity. The proportion of self-efficacy, hope and PsyCap mediation was 10.73%, 10.77%, 36.22% for professional identity respectively. Conclusion: These results provided evidence that PsyCap could mediate the association between WPV and professional identity. To increase the level of professional identity, positive interventions targeting PsyCap should be taken, with a focus on self-efficacy and hope. Factors affecting psychological health and career choice among medical students in eastern and western region of China after COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Introduction: To unearth superior countermeasures that improve psychological health and upgrade the quality of employment for medical students in China in post-epidemic era, this study was designed to determine the possible factors affecting psychological status and future career choice of this population. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out. Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were applied to measure psychological state. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were adopted to filtrate related factors for psychological health and employment intention. Results: A total of 936 medical students, including 522 from eastern universities and 414 from western universities, were enrolled in the study. Anxiety among students in China's western universities was higher than that in China's eastern universities (30.4% vs. 22.0%), but no differences in the occurrences of stress (11.4% vs. 13.4%), depression (28.7% vs. 24.5%) and insomnia (30.7% vs. 25.7%). Grades, academic ranking, household income, attitudes about COVID-19 were associated with the occurrence of psychological problems. In addition, major, education level, academic ranking, family income, and clinical experience may affect the choice of future employment location and employment income. Notably, household income affected by COVID-19 and the perception of epidemic prevention and control resulted in changes in future employment region and income. COVID-19 can lead medical students with psychological problems to have a negative attitude toward future employment. Encouragingly, multiple activities, namely, proactive consideration of employment, taking part in career planning training lectures and timely adjustment of career planning, were beneficial to the professional identity of medical students. Conclusion: This study suggests that medical student psychology is influenced by COVID-19 and academic and financial pressures; actively coping with COVID-19 and making career planning in advance will contribute to optimizing future employment. Our findings provide a potent guideline for relevant departments to accurately adjust job deployment and for medical students to actively choose a career in the future.

Abstract:Background: Medical staff play a crucial role in delivering healthcare services, especially during epidemics of infectious diseases such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there is a growing issue of burnout and low wellbeing among this group. While it is widely recognized that burnout has a negative impact on subjective wellbeing, the exact relationship between the two is not yet completely understood. The purpose of this study is to explore the chain mediating role of psychological capital and perceived social support between burnout and subjective wellbeing among medical staff. Methods: Using the convenient sampling method, 604 medical staff were selected for a cross-sectional study. All participants completed a self-report questionnaire that collected demographic information, as well as data from the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, General Wellbeing Schedule, Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Perceived Social Support Scale. SPSS 27.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro were used for data analysis. Results: There was a significant correlation between burnout, psychological capital, perceived social support, and subjective wellbeing ( p < 0.01). Burnout not only has a direct negative impact on the subjective wellbeing of medical staff (effect: −0.2045; Bootstrap 95%CI: −0.2506, −0.1583), but also exerts an indirect influence on subjective wellbeing through three pathways: the independent mediating effect of psychological capital (effect: −0.0481; Bootstrap 95%CI: −0.0876, −0.0109), the independent mediating effect of perceived social support (effect: −0.0092; Bootstrap 95%CI: −0.0203, −0.0003), and the chained mediating effect of psychological capital and perceived social support (effect: −0.0092; Bootstrap 95%CI: −0.0183, −0.0019). Conclusion: High burnout in medical staff can impair the level of psychological capital, leading to diminished perceived social support and ultimately reduced subjective wellbeing. The findings of this study contribute to understanding the potential pathways between burnout and subjective wellbeing and provide preliminary data support for developing strategies to improve the mental health of medical staff.

Abstract:In the present study we investigated the effect of three manoeuvres known to be associated with enhanced sympathetic activity on plasma levels of active and inactive renin. To this end, active and trypsin-activatable renin were measured in blood drawn from 12 untreated essential hypertensive patients before, during and after any of the following tests: isometric exercise (handgrip), noise stimulation and 45 degrees head-up tilt. These studies were repeated after the patients had been treated with either atenolol (n = 6) or SL 77499 (n = 6), an alpha-1 adrenoceptor blocking agent for 10 days. The results indicate that active and inactive renin often change in an unpredictable way in response to sympathetic stimulation. There are, as yet, no conclusive explanations which describe the behaviour of both forms of renin during these manoeuvres.
Relationship between psychological capital and depression in Chinese physicians: The mediating role of organizational commitment and coping style

Abstract:Background It is well known that the medical profession is a high-risk practice, with intense work and complex situations. The physicians are prone to suffer from depression due to occupational stress under high workloads for long periods of time. Depression not only impairs physicians’ mental health, but also affects the quality of health services, so it is important to explore the factors and mechanisms affecting depression among physicians. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 1,139 physicians from Heilongjiang Province were surveyed by cluster sampling procedures. The questionnaires included Psychological Capital Questionnaire, Chinese Employee Organizational Commitment Questionnaire, Trait Coping Style Questionnaire and Self-rating Depression Scale. Pearson correlation analysis and Bootstrap were used for statistical analysis. Results This study found that 41.6% of physicians suffering from depression. Among them, 17.0% of physicians showed moderate depression, and 2.6% of physicians exhibited severe depression. The serial-multiple mediation of organizational commitment and positive coping styles in the relationship between psychological capital and depression was significant. Conclusion The results showed that the psychological capital was sequentially associated with increased organizational commitment, and then increased positive coping styles, which resulted in reduced depression among physicians.

Association between occupational stress, occupational burnout, and depressive symptoms among medical staff during COVID-19: A cross-sectional study in Chongqing, China

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies have extensively examined the factors contributing to the onset of occupational stress, burnout, and depression. However, the relationship between these variables is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms and to investigate the mediating effect of burnout between occupational stress and depressive symptoms in medical staff. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among medical staff in Chongqing, China. The Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory: General Survey (MBI-GS), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to assess the status of occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms, respectively. The bootstrapping analyses using SPSS PROCESS macros version 3 were conducted to examine mediating effects. RESULTS: The study conducted on medical staff in Chongqing revealed that the detection rates of occupational stress, occupational burnout, and depressive symptoms were 31.8%, 23.3%, and 30.3%, respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that occupational stress and burnout accounted for 19.3% (p < 0.001) and 18.8% (p < 0.001) of the variance in depressive symptoms, respectively. Mediation analysis showed that occupational stress indirectly affected depressive symptoms through the mediating effect of occupational burnout, with a mediation effect value of 0.13 (bootstrap 95% CI: 0.116-0.144) and the mediation effect accounting for 44.8% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that occupational stress and burnout were predictors of depressive symptoms. Occupational stress had a significant indirect effect on depressive symptoms via burnout. These results suggest that reducing occupational stress and burnout could be effective strategies for preventing depression among medical staff.

Abstract:Abstract Background Newly recruited nurses face multiple sources of stress and their coping styles need to be focused on to ensure good mental health. This study aimed to examine the relationship among mental health literacy, psychological capital and coping styles in newly recruited nurses. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in August and September 2022. A total of 315 newly recruited nurses were recruited in a tertiary hospital in Henan Province, central China, employing the convenience sampling method. The self-reported questionnaires were sent through a QR code, including the Mental Health Literacy Scale for Healthcare Students, Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationships among the variables. Mediation analysis was performed to identify the mediating effect of psychological capital on the relationship between mental health literacy and coping styles. Results Positive coping showed a positive relationship with psychological capital and mental health literacy, while negative coping showed a negative relationship with psychological capital and mental health literacy. For positive coping, psychological capital was a partial mediator with an effect of 0.140, accounting for 62.8%. For negative coping, a full mediating effect was shown by psychological capital between mental health literacy and negative coping, with an indirect effect of -0.048. Conclusion Psychological capital plays a partial and complete mediating role between mental health literacy and different coping styles among newly recruited nurses. Diversified training and personalized guidance in improving mental health literacy and increasing psychological capital simultaneously can be provided to newly recruited nurses continuously to adjust their coping styles.

Abstract:Due to the importance of medical students in the buildup of the health system and the influence of professional identity in their study, the aim of the study is to focus on the impact of academic satisfaction and professional identity on Chinese medical students during their career transformation, taking into consideration other factors that play a role in this relationship. 735 junior and senior medical university students from two training hospital were surveyed by using a cluster sampling method. The questionnaire included academic satisfaction scale, career transition psychological scale, simple coping style questionnaire and professional identity questionnaire. Pearson correlation and process plug-in model 6 were used for chain mediation analysis. The results show that in the career transition period, there is a direct relationship between academic satisfaction and career identity, and a chain intermediary relationship between academic satisfaction and self-confidence and coping style. In addition to our findings, we also assert that academic satisfaction has a direct impact on self-confidence and positive coping style in the transition period, and is a predictor of professional identity, whether directly or through the chain intermediary of self-confidence and coping style in the transition period. The results showed that academic satisfaction was sequentially associated with increased self-confidence, and then increased positive coping styles, which resulted in higher professional identity among medical students.

Abstract:Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic’s impacts on medical students’ professional identities (PI) were unclear with contrary conclusions in previous studies. We aimed to assess the individual and joint effects of cumulative confirmed cases and attention level of COVID-19 on medical students’ professional identity in China. Methods: We used data from a national cross-sectional study (the China Medical Student Survey) conducted in 2020, involving a nationally representative sample of medical students from all the 121 medical colleges. We collected cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 34 provinces, and matched case data with medical students based on the dates they were investigated. Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of exposures with continuous and binary outcomes, respectively. Findings: During June 18, 2020 to July 20, 2020, a total of 30395 medical students were involved, with 30147 valid questionnaires (99·18%). The mean PI score of all the 30147 medical students was 3·82, and 10819 (35·89%) medical students’ PI scores were 4 or above. The possibility of PI score ≥ 4 decreased per 1 standard deviation increasing of log (cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19) (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0·93, 95% confident interval (CI), 0·89 – 0·99). Compared to medical students in the first quartile of cumulative confirmed cases (< 238 cases), those in the second quartile (238 – 589 cases) had a significantly decrease in PI score (mean difference = -0·05, 95% CI, -0·07 – -0·03) and the possibility of PI score ≥ 4 (aOR = 0·85, 95% CI, 0·79 – 0·91). The joint effects of less cumulative conformed cases and more attention to the pandemic further increased the PI of medical students, in both additive and multiplicative scales. Interpretation: Medical students’ PI increased along with less cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19. Joint effects of less cumulative confirmed cases and more attention to the pandemic could further increase the PI. Multifaceted and multisectoral actions are needed to stabilize and further improve medical students’ PI. Global cooperation is needed to control the COVID-19 pandemic, which will contribute to the promotion of medical students’ PI. Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social support, self-efficacy, professional identity, and willingness to practice medicine among medical students during the COVID-19 epidemic. An online questionnaire was distributed to 1,450 medical college students in Shandong Province, China. The questionnaire encompassed four dimensions: willingness to practice medicine, self-efficacy, professional identity, and social support. The study revealed that social support among medical students positively correlated with self-efficacy and professional identity. Furthermore, it showed that professional identity served as a significant mediating factor between social support and the willingness to practice medicine, while both self-efficacy and professional identity collectively acted as mediators between social support and the willingness to practice medicine. The most substantial mediating effect was from the independent mediating role of professional identity between social support and willingness to practice medicine. Additionally, the study uncovered that social support had a negative predictive effect on the willingness to practice medicine, and self-efficacy did not independently mediate the relationship between social support and the willingness to practice medicine. This study examines the COVID-19 context in China to provide a theoretical foundation and practical insights for enhancing medical students' willingness to practice medicine and bolstering the pool of healthcare professionals.

Impact of Concurrent Media Exposure on Professional Identity: Cross-Sectional Study of 1087 Medical Students During Long COVID

Abstract:Background: Long COVID has widened the health gap across society and highlighted the vulnerabilities and risks faced by health care systems. For instance, the global trend of medical workers resigning has become a prominent topic on social media. In response to this severe social problem in global public health within the digital society, it is urgent to investigate how the professional identity of medical students, who are digital natives and the future workforce of medical practitioners, is affected by the media environment. Objective: This study aims to examine how media exposure relates to medical students' perceptions of informational and emotional support, and how these perceptions further influence the development of their professional identity. Methods: Building on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework, this study develops a theoretical model to illustrate how media exposure affects medical students' professional identity through the mediation of social support. Specifically, media exposure was assessed through online news media and social media exposure; social support was evaluated in terms of informational and emotional support; and professional identity was measured through medical students' sense of belonging and professional commitment. A survey was conducted at a medical school in China, yielding 1087 valid responses that were analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0. Results: Consistent with our expectations, online news media exposure was positively associated with both informational support (β=.163; P<.001) and emotional support (β=.084; P=.007). Similarly, social media exposure showed positive associations with informational support (β=.122; P<.001) and emotional support (β=.235; P<.001). Thereafter, informational support (β=.228; P<.001) and emotional support (β=.344; P<.001) were positively associated with students' sense of belonging. Meanwhile, both informational support (β=.245; P<.001) and emotional support (β=.412; P<.001) positively impacted medical students' professional commitment. In addition, a mediation test was conducted. The results confirmed that informational support and emotional support partially mediated the effect of online news media, while fully mediating the effect of social media on medical students' sense of belonging and professional commitment. Conclusions: This study finds that exposure to online news media and social media can enhance medical students' sense of belonging and professional commitment through the formation of informational and emotional support. It expands the discussion on the role of media in providing social support and facilitating the development of medical students' professional identity. This is a valuable contribution to addressing complex public health crises through effective media governance in the network era.
Influence of psychological stress and coping styles in the professional identity of undergraduate nursing students after the outbreak of COVID‐19: A cross‐sectional study in China

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the influencing factors in professional identity of undergraduate nursing students after the outbreak of COVID-19.DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.METHODS: The study covered 2,999 nursing students in six undergraduate nursing schools. Several self-report questionnaires were used to collect the general information, psychological stress, coping styles and professional identity of the undergraduate nursing students.RESULTS: The overall average score of the professional identity of nursing students (3.67 ± 0.51) has increased significantly after the outbreak of COVID-19. The professional identity of the undergraduate nursing students was negatively correlated with psychological stress (r = -0.23, p < .001), expectation (r = -0.12, p < .001) and avoidance (r = -0.16, p < .001), but was positively correlated with solving problems (r = 0.18, p < .001) and seeking support (r = 0.12, p < .001). Academic performance, positions, grades, reasons for choosing a nursing profession, parents or relatives engaged in nursing work and the risk degree of residence were the factors influencing the professional identity score of undergraduate nursing students' (p < .001).

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had impact that may contribute to a rise in mental health problems. The present study was aimed to better understand psychological status among medical staff and medical students during the early epidemic and to explore the influence factors of psychological distress. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted online from February 2–14, 2020. We collected general information related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Respondents were assessed using the Kessler-6 Psychological Distress Scale (K6), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ). Stepwise multiple linear regression was performed to identify factors influencing psychological distress. Results: Five hundred and twenty-eight respondents returned valid questionnaires. Medical staff and Medical students scored averages of 6.77 ± 5.04, 15.48 ± 8.66 on the K6, 37.22 ± 11.39, 22.62 ± 11.25 on the SSRS and 18.52 ± 7.54, 28.49 ± 11.17 on the PSS, respectively. Most medical staff (279, 91.77%) and 148 medical students (66.07%) showed a positive coping style. Social support, perceived stress, hours spent watching epidemic-related information per day and frequency of epidemic-related dreams were identified as factors influencing psychological distress among medical staff and medical students. Coping style emerged as a determinant of psychological distress among medical staff. Conclusions: In the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic in China, medical staff and medical students were at moderate to high risk of psychological distress. Our results suggest that psychological interventions designed to strengthen social support, reduce perceived stress and adopt a positive coping style may be effective at improving the mental health of medical staff and medical students.
