Abstract:Given existing empirical support for the tripartite influence and social comparison models to explain variance in body dissatisfaction and disordered eating across diverse populations in the Western context, research is needed to describe these models in non-Western populations. The present study tested an integrated model inclusive of appearance pressures, thinness and muscularity internalizations, and social comparisons in relation to drive for muscularity and thinness-oriented disordered eating in heterosexual Chinese adult men ( n = 510) and women ( n = 473). Separated by gender, two integrated models had good fit statistics per structural equation modeling. In men and women, higher appearance pressures were uniquely related to higher drive for muscularity and thinness-oriented disordered eating. In men and women, higher thinness and muscularity internalizations were uniquely related to higher thinness-oriented disordered eating and drive for muscularity, respectively. In men and women, higher upward body image comparisons were uniquely related to higher drive for muscularity, and in men only, higher downward body image comparisons were uniquely related to higher thinness-oriented disordered eating. The present findings, which extend theories of eating pathology, may aid in improving treatment efforts for body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in heterosexual Chinese adult men and women.

Abstract:Theories of eating pathology explain body image and disordered eating in diverse populations, including sexual minority (SM) individuals. Yet, previous efforts to extend theories of eating pathology to SM individuals have mostly focused on Western populations. The present study integrated the tripartite influence, minority stress, and social comparison models to explain variance in body image and disordered eating in Chinese SM men and women. Chinese self-identified SM adults (N = 1051; n = 519 men, n = 532 women) completed an online, cross-sectional study that assessed sociocultural influences (e.g., tripartite influence), minority stress, social comparisons, drive for muscularity, and disordered eating. Two integrated models were tested for men and women using structural equation modeling. Across both populations, sociocultural influences exerted the largest direct positive effects on body image and disordered eating. In men, only downward body image comparisons were uniquely related to outcomes. In women, higher upward body image comparisons were uniquely associated with higher drive for muscularity and higher downward body image comparisons were uniquely associated with higher thinness-oriented disordered eating. Minority stressors (e.g., sexual orientation concealment, internalized homophobia) were uniquely related to outcomes in men, not women. Findings extend existing theories of body image and disordered eating to Chinese SM populations.

Abstract:PURPOSE:This study sought to examine the utility of eating expectancy, thinness expectancy, and the interactive role of both, in predicting eating disturbances (viz., bulimic symptoms and drive for thinness) in European American and Chinese female college students.METHODS:A sample of 237 European American and 221 Chinese female college students completed measures of eating and thinness expectancies and eating disturbances.RESULTS:Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that thinness expectancy significantly predicted increases in both drive for thinness and bulimic symptoms (with these increases being greater for European Americans), whereas eating expectancy predicted increases in bulimic symptoms only. In addition, for European Americans, a significant interaction for bulimic symptoms was found, revealing a synergistic increase in bulimic symptoms for those with both a high thinness expectancy and a high eating expectancy. For Chinese, a significant interaction for drive for thinness was found, demonstrating that for those with a high thinness expectancy, a higher eating expectancy was actually associated with a lower drive for thinness.CONCLUSION:The present findings point to the value of examining for the co-presence of both expectancies in predicting eating disturbances while also highlighting cultural variations in the study of eating pathology.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:Descriptive cross-sectional study, level V.
Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference and Waist–hip Ratio Are Associated with Depressive Symptoms in Older Chinese Women: Results from the Rugao Longevity and Ageing Study (Rulas)

Abstract:Objective: The objective was to determine whether obesity is associated with depressive symptoms among older Chinese.Methods: Data from the cross-sectional Rugao Longevity and Ageing Study were used including anthropometric measurements (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR)), socio-demographic characteristics, living habits, physical health and cognitive impairment. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between obesity and depressive symptoms.Results: Among 1732 elderly Chinese aged 70-84years, the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 6.7% (5.0%-8.5%) in men and 12.5% (10.4%-14.6%) in women. A negative linear trend was found between depressive symptoms and BMI in women (P-for trend < 0.05). Women with BMI 28.0 kg/m(2) had lower chances (OR = 0.41 (0.20-0.84), p = 0.01) to have elevated depressive symptoms compared with their normal weight counterparts. Furthermore, consistent trends were observed with lower depression prevalence rates in higher WC and WHR categories in women. However, no such associations were apparent in men.Conclusion: Higher BMI, WC and WHR categories were all associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms in older women.

Abstract:Body surveillance and body shame are features of objectified body consciousness that have utility in predicting body image and eating disturbances but evidence is based largely on samples in developed Western nations and it is not clear whether these factors predict disturbances independent of conceptually-related factors emphasized in alternate sociocultural accounts. To address these issues, we assessed the impact of body surveillance and body shame as well as features of other sociocultural models (i.e. perceived appearance pressure, appearance comparisons, general negative affect) on disordered eating, fatness concerns, and body dissatisfaction among young Chinese adults. University-age women (n=466) and men (n=230) from Chongqing, China completed validated self-report measures of demographics and the above constructs. For women, objectified body consciousness measures explained significant variance in each measure of disturbances, beyond effects of other factors; body surveillance had a unique impact in each prediction model. For men, facets of objectified body consciousness also combined for unique variance across prediction models, though body shame was the more prominent unique influence. Findings highlight the potential role of individual differences in body surveillance and body shame as influences on eating and body image of young women and men within a Chinese context.

Abstract:Objective: This cross-sectional study explored the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes, body shape concerns, and social anxiety and depressive symptoms in male and female medical students in China.Method: Four hundred eighty-seven students from Central South University (Hunan Province, Changsha City, China) completed the following self-report measures: Eating Attitudes Test-26, Eating Disorders Assessment Questionnaire, Body Shape Questionnaire, Swansea Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire, Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, and the Self-Rating Depression Scale.Results: A comparatively lower rate of at-risk eating attitudes (2.5%) and eating disorders (0.90%) were found compared to those reported in other studies. Significantly more female (3.2%) than male (1.2%) students had abnormal eating attitudes with 4 female students meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria for bulimia nervosa. Significant relationships were observed between eating attitudes, body shape concern, social anxiety, depression, and body mass index. For females, the most significant correlate of distorted eating attitudes was body shape concern, whereas for male students, social anxiety and concern with muscle size and shape were most strongly correlated with distorted eating attitudes. “Thinness is beauty”: Predictors of anti-fat attitudes among young Chinese women

Abstract:Despite rapidly increasing numbers of overweight and obese individuals and a great emphasis on an idealized body shape (i.e., thinness) that have made anti-fat attitudes a considerable issue in Chinese society over the past two decades, little is known about the predictors of anti-fat attitudes in China. The present study investigated features of tripartite influence model (i.e., sociocultural pressure and thin-ideal internalization), objectified body consciousness (i.e., body surveillance and body shame), broad conceptualization of beauty, and critical processing of media images in the prediction of anti-fat attitudes among young Chinese women. The structural equation modeling analyses revealed several findings. First, perceived sociocultural pressure contributed to thin-ideal internalization and body shame, which in turn related to stronger anti-fat attitudes. Second, thin-ideal internalization was linked to body shame via body surveillance. Third, broad conceptualization of beauty predicted anti-fat attitudes in the "dislike fat people" dimension, without significant linkages to "fear of fat" and "willpower beliefs". Fourth, while critical processing of beauty images was associated with sociocultural pressure, it did not predict anti-fat attitudes when considering other factors in our model. These findings extend the understanding of Chinese women's anti-fat attitudes on the basis of tripartite influence model and objectification theory. It also suggests a novel way for future interventions to reduce anti-fat attitudes by promoting people's positive perceptions about their own body images and relieving their personal appearance concerns.

Abstract:Using a nationally representative Chinese urban sample of 930 women and 893 men aged 20-45 who were married or had a steady sexual partner, this study examines the prevalence, risk factors and sequelae of body image concerns. Women's weight loss desires begin at modest BMI levels and are more pronounced among youth, among people of urban origin, and among the educated. Women also have stronger body image concerns if they are single, living in coastal areas, taller or larger than their partner, or if their relationship with their partner is poor. Moreover, women who perceive themselves as unattractive and who want to lose weight report more psychological distress. These findings suggest that China has joined the worldwide diffusion of the thin ideal, with negative consequences for women.

Abstract:In this letter, we put forward a new strategy for the separation of micro-/nanoparticles with different sizes and densities by using the tensions at liquid interfaces. The interactions between particles and a liquid-liquid interface have been analyzed. Furthermore, we applied our strategy to the separation of two size-distributed Cu2O particles by using the water and n-pentanol interface, which demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed separation method.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Accumulating evidence suggests that the prevalence of eating disorders among Chinese women is a public health concern. Prior studies have drawn linkages between conflicting cultural values, identity confusion, and eating disorder symptomatology, which may be relevant for understanding the rise of eating disorders amidst China's rapid economic and sociocultural transformation. Here, we explore how women's experiences with traditional eating norms and modernizing norms of femininity may shape their food and body attitudes. METHOD Chinese young adult women (N = 34; aged 18-22 years) participated in semi-structured interviews focusing on experiences with norms surrounding eating and ideal feminine appearance, perceived conflict between these norms, and their responses to perceived conflict. Interviews were conducted via email (n = 27) or via Skype (n = 7). Participants were not asked about past or present diagnoses of eating disorders. Analysis of responses was guided by the principles of thematic analysis. RESULTS Women reported encounters with cultural eating norms and feminine appearance norms, and described factors that motivated continued or discontinued adherence to these norms. Women reported strategies of conflict resolution, which resulted in different emotional and behavioral outcomes including eating disorder symptoms. DISCUSSION Women's experiences with norms surrounding eating and appearance indicate the centrality of these encounters in the formation of individual and interpersonal values. Our findings suggest the importance for clinicians to assist clients in exploring the meanings behind internalized attitudes toward food and body, and to help clients balance interpersonal and individual needs.

Abstract:Objectives Previous research suggests potential moderating roles of dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility in the association between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. However, relevant research is mainly conducted on adult women from Western countries, and limited evidence exists for adolescent samples, especially from non‐Western contexts (e.g., China). Thus, this study aimed to examine the moderating roles of dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility in the relationship between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in Chinese adolescents. Method We recruited 545 Chinese adolescents (53.9% boys, aged 12–16 years) who completed measures of body dissatisfaction, dispositional mindfulness, body image flexibility, and disordered eating. Moderation analyses were examined with PROCESS macro on SPSS. Results In separate models, both higher dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility weakened relationships between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. However, when both dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility were entered into the same moderation model, only body image flexibility showed a significant moderating effect. Discussion Both dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility may weaken the association between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in adolescents. However, body image flexibility might have a stronger effect than dispositional mindfulness. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at reducing body dissatisfaction to prevent disordered eating in adolescents may pay more attention to adolescents' body image flexibility.

Abstract:Background:Eating disorders is a particular problem for university students. However, little is known about this problem among medical students who often have high stress.Aims:The aims of this study were to describe the changes in eating attitudes and eating disorders from 2006 to 2008 in a medical student sample, and to compare the gender differences of eating attitudes and body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) with this sample.Methods:This study was conducted in Changsha city, Mainland China. Self-reported questionnaires, including the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and Eating Disorders Assessment Questionnaire (CETCA), were employed to examine the changes in eating attitudes and eating disorders from 2006 to 2008 in a medical student sample (N = 500).Results:Self-reported findings suggest that tentative eating disorders prevalence was 0.90% (anorexia nervosa (AN): 0; bulimia nervosa (BN): 4 females) in 2006 and 1.44% (AN: 1 male; BN: 1 male and 3 females) in 2008 of the full sample. The present data showed that 2.26% (2 males and 9 females) in 2006 and 2.47% (4 males and 6 females) in 2008 of all students obtained scores greater than 20 on the EAT-26 indicative of distorted eating attitudes and behaviour. Male students kept lower distorted eating attitudes and behaviours than female students, while female students kept a lower BMI than male students in both 2006 and 2008. However, there were no statistically significant changes in eating attitudes, distorted eating attitudes and CETCA in either male or female students from 2006 to 2008.Conclusions:The results of this study suggest that there were no statistically significant changes from 2006 to 2008 in eating attitudes, distorted eating attitudes and CETCA. However, females showed significantly higher eating disorders and distorted eating attitudes compared to males in both 2006 and 2008. This study is furthering our understanding of eating disorders in a Chinese cultural context.

Abstract:The tripartite influence model suggests that appearance pressures from family, peers, and the media contribute to thin-ideal internalization, which leads to increased body dissatisfaction and subsequent eating disorder pathology. The tripartite influence model was initially developed and tested among primarily White samples, and emerging research suggests racial/ethnic differences in mean levels of particular model constructs. Consequently, the model's appropriateness for understanding eating disorder risk in racial/ethnic minorities warrants investigation to determine its usefulness in explicating eating disorder risk in diverse populations. Participants in the current study were White (n = 1167), Black (n = 212), Latina (n = 203), and Asian (n = 176) women from five geographically disparate college campuses in the United States. Participants completed the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4, the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Evaluation Subscale, and the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire. Analysis of variance was used to compare mean levels of each construct across racial/ethnic groups. Multigroup structural equation modeling was used to assess the appropriateness of the tripartite influence model for each racial/ethnic group, and to examine differences in the strength of the model pathways across groups. There were significant mean level differences across groups for most model constructs. However, results indicated similar model fit across racial/ethnic groups, with few differences in the strength of model pathways. Findings suggest that although some groups report lower levels of proposed risk factors, the sociocultural risk processes for eating pathology identified through the tripartite influence model are similar across racial/ethnic groups of young adult women. Such information can be used to inform culturally-sensitive interventions.

Abstract:Transverse polarization transfer coefficients for the (p,n) reaction on /sup 58/Ni and /sup 90/Zr targets have been measured at E/sub p/ = 80 MeV and theta = 0/sup 0/. Observed values for the Gamow-Teller giant resonance region are D/sub N//sub N/ = -0.36 +- 0.07 and -0.18 +- 0.05 for /sup 58/Ni and /sup 90/Zr targets, respectively, consistent with predominantly spin-flip transitions. Those for the dipole resonance are D/sub N//sub N/ = 0.14 +- 0.03 and 0.11 +- 0.03, indicating the coexistence of the spin-flip resonance with a non-spin-flip resonance. Finite positive D/sub N//sub N/ values are observed up to an excitation energy of 30 MeV on both targets, showing the importance of the single step process. The obtained results are interpreted in terms of a plane-wave impulse approximation. In conjunction with the higher energy D/sub N//sub N/ data, the transition strength ratios of non-spin-flip to spin-flip, and the D/sub N//sub N/ values pertinent to spin-flip transitions, have been deduced empirically for the Gamow-Teller resonance, the dipole resonance, and E/sub x/ = 28 MeV, regions in the /sup 90/Zr(p,n) reaction.
Social media use and young Chinese men’s restrained eating: the mediating roles of self-objectification and body satisfaction

Abstract:Using Objectification Theory as a guide, social media use is found to be connected to self-objectification, body satisfaction and restrained eating among young Western women and men and Chinese women. However, the relationship among young Chinese men is largely unknown. The current study aimed to examine whether these relationships exist among young Chinese men, as well as self-objectification and body satisfaction’s serial mediation effects. 335 male young Chinese participants (aged 18–35) were recruited to complete questionnaires evaluating their social media usage, self-objectification, body dissatisfaction and restrained eating. A significant correlation between using social media and restrained eating was mediated by self-objectification. However, the impact of social media use on restrained eating was not mediated by body satisfaction, as young Chinese men’s body satisfaction was not correlated with social media use, restrained eating or self-objectification. The fact that Objectification Theory is partially applicable to young Chinese men means that cultural context, especially Eastern context, is important in this framework. And in this case, young Chinese men’s self-compassion and masculinity may be able to explain the partial non-applicability.

Abstract:Body image flexibility has shown robust negative associations with body dissatisfaction. However, research in this area is confined to cross-sectional studies on adults in Western cultural contexts. Responding to these gaps and the unique cultural nuances and increasing prevalence estimates of body dissatisfaction in China, we examined the bi-directional nature of body image flexibility and body fat and muscularity dissatisfaction in Chinese adolescent boys and girls (N = 1381, 57.3 % girls) at two points over 18 months (Wave [W] 1=baseline, W2=18 months later). We also explored sex differences in longitudinal models. In boys, higher W1 body image flexibility was associated with lower W2 body fat dissatisfaction, and higher W1 body fat dissatisfaction was associated with lower W2 body image flexibility. Null prospective associations between body image flexibility and muscularity dissatisfaction were identified in boys. In girls, higher W1 body fat and muscularity body dissatisfaction were associated with lower W2 body image flexibility. Higher W1 body image flexibility was associated with lower W2 body fat and muscularity dissatisfaction in girls. We found no significant sex differences in the models. Findings advance a multicultural understanding of the temporal and bi-directional links between body image flexibility and body fat and muscularity dissatisfaction in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:Background: Eating disorders (EDs) have become a global public health concern among adolescents and young adults. However, Chinese university students exhibit a high prevalence of eating disorders. This study aims to investigate the effects of self-esteem (SE) and body shape (BS) on ED behaviors among Chinese university students. Methods: Using random sampling, 946 Chinese university students (aged 18 to 24, M = 19.94, SD = 1.04) participated in a survey comprising the Sick, Control, One, Fat, and Food Questionnaire (SCOFF-Q), the Body Shape Questionnaire (BS-Q), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RS-S) to assess their eating disorder or non-eating disorder (NED) behavior. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between body shape and eating disorder behaviors (r = 0.19, p < 0.01), while there was a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and eating disorder behaviors (r = −0.14, p = 0.001 < 0.01). Gender was a moderating factor in the relationship between body shape and eating disorder behaviors (t = 3.14, p = 0.002 < 0.01), while parents' marital status was a moderating factor in the relationship between self-esteem and eating disorder behavior (t = 2.72, p = 0.007 < 0.01). Body shape (z = 6.47, p = 0.001 < 0.01), self-esteem (z = −2.81, p = 0.005 < 0.05), and gender (z = 3.06, p = 0.002 < 0.01) significantly influenced eating disorder behavior among Chinese university students aged 18–24 years. Conclusions: There was a direct effect between body shape and self-esteem and eating disorder behaviors among Chinese university students aged 18–24 years. Alarmingly, female university students are becoming susceptible to external influences on self-esteem and body shape, leading to eating disorder behaviors at an increasingly younger age in China.

Abstract:The current study replicated and extended the gratitude model of body appreciation and intuitive eating in Chinese women. Using a sample of 957 young Chinese women, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test two previously established models derived from samples of American (original model) and Japanese (modified model) women. Results indicated that the modified model had a better fit and was largely replicated in the Chinese context. Higher gratitude was associated with lower appearance and others' approval of self-worth, higher body appreciation, and greater intuitive eating. Also, we further extended the model by exploring whether and how the model could explain intuitive eating facets. Results showed unique links between the core variables in the model and each facet of intuitive eating. Specifically, findings of the excellent model fit indicate that interventions focused on cultivating gratitude may be promising in promoting body appreciation and intuitive eating in young Chinese women. Also, interventions based on the model might be modified to address specific facets of intuitive eating, which may enhance the effectiveness of future interventions. Future research should use longitudinal and experimental designs and develop culturally adapted models to advance our understanding of how the gratitude model of body appreciation and intuitive eating applies to Chinese women.

Abstract:Extensions of objectification theory to pregnant women are few and continued research is needed to better understand the psychological consequences of significant changes to physical appearance during pregnancy. Specific interests in this area include functionality appreciation which may be particularly relevant to pregnancy. Research in this area is also lacking representation of non-Western cultural contexts. To this end, we employed an online survey to assess objectification theory and functionality appreciation in Chinese pregnant women ( N = 345). Correlations showed that higher body surveillance and body shame were associated with higher disordered eating and psychological distress, and higher functionality appreciation was associated with lower body surveillance, body shame, and disordered eating. Mediation analyses suggested that higher body surveillance was associated with higher body shame which, in turn, was associated with higher disordered eating and psychological distress. Main effects suggested a negative association between functionality appreciation and body shame, but moderation analyses suggested that higher functionality appreciation strengthened the positive association between body surveillance and body shame. Findings underscore objectification theory as a useful framework to understand eating and body image disturbances and psychological distress in Chinese pregnant women and outline future directions to clarify the temporal nature of these associations and the precise role of functionality appreciation.

Abstract:Objective Body-image disturbance and eating disorders are significant physical and mental health problems in China. Attitudes toward the body are thought to work in conjunction with other established risk factors for dietary pathology, which include body dissatisfaction, dieting, and negative effects. Negative appearance evaluation may be valuable for extending our understanding of measuring factors and potential causal relationships associated with body image and eating problems. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between negative appearance evaluation and a combination of eating attitudes and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and the mediating effect of negative appearance evaluation on the relationship between eating attitudes and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance. Methods We invited 339 Chinese adults to undergo the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), the Fear of Negative Appearance Evaluation Scale (FNAES), and the Sociocultural Attitudes toward Appearance (SATAQ-3) scale, and used AMOS 24.0 for model construction and mediating effects testing. Results There was a significant positive correlation between EAT-26 scores and FNAES ( p < 0.001) and SATAQ-3 scores ( p < 0.001), and all dimensions except internalization general were significantly positively correlated ( p < 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between FNAES and SATAQ-3 scores for all dimensions ( p < 0. 01). There was no significant direct effect of eating attitude on sociocultural attitude toward appearance; however, there was a significant mediating effect of fear of negative appearance evaluation. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that negative appearance evaluation fully mediates the relationship between eating attitudes and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance. An individual’s attitude toward eating affects negative body perceptions and thus their perception of their own body shape. Our exploration of the specific effects of eating attitudes on body perception provides a psychological basis for guidance and developing interventions regarding attitudes toward the body.
