Abstract:The concept of slice-wise factor of safety is introduced to investigate the state of both the whole slope and each slice. The assumption that the interslice force ratio is the same between any two slices is made and the eccentric moment of slice weight is also taken into account. Then four variables equations are formulated based on the equilibrium of forces and moment and the assumption of interslice forces, and then the slice-wise factor of safety along the slip surface can be obtained. The active and passive sections of the slope can be determined based on the distribution of factor of safety. The factor of safety of the whole slope is also defined as the ratio of the sum of antisliding force to the sum of sliding force on the slip surface. Two examples with different slip surface shapes are analysed to demonstrate the usage of the proposed method. The slice-wise factor of safety enables us to determine the sliding mechanism and pattern of a slope. The reliability is verified by comparing the overall factor of safety with that calculated by conventional methods.

Abstract:A limit equilibrium method that satisfies the three force equilibrium conditions of all columns and three moment equilibrium conditions of total failure mass is proposed,in which the interslice forces are assumed by proposed lateral shear factors and lateral shear distribution functions.The present formulation can be treated as an extension of the 2D Morgenstern-Price.technique.The factor of safety of each row(column) is obtained by solving the force equilibrium equations and the boundary conditions of total failure;then the lateral shear factors are determined by solving the torque-equilibrium equations for total failure mass.All intercolumn forces are taken into account in calculating factor of safety.The direct iterative algorithm is implemented in the program developed by the authors to improve the computational efficiency markedly.The analysis results for two examples indicate that the given η1,η3,η4 have a small effect on the factor of safety for symmetrical slope and the given.4 also has a slight effect on the factor of safety for asymmetric slope;and these factors of safety obtained in the new formulation are similar to those in previous studies.It is not necessarily true for some composite slip surfaces that a more simplified formulation will give a lower factor of safety.
Limit equilibrium analysis method based on vector sum method for 3D slope

Abstract:The 2D limit equilibrium method is not suitable to analyze the stability of slope with complicated geometry. Based on the definition of vector sum factor of safety, a general limit equilibrium method, which satisfies the three force equilibriums for all columns and the three moment equilibriums for total failure mass, was proposed. The lateral shear factors and lateral shear distribution functions were introduced to simplify the interslice force distribution, and all interslice forces were taken into account in calculating the safety factor. The safety factors for each row and column were obtained by force equilibriums and boundary conditions for total failure mass, and the lateral shear factors were determined by solving the torque-equilibrium equations for total failure mass. The vector sum factor was determined according to the vector characteristics of forces against the tendency direction which is the opposite direction of the sum of the shears along the sliding surface. A classical example was adopted to validate the presented method. The numerical results showed that fully consideration of interslice forces improves the safe factor of 3D slope.

Abstract:A new derivation of the three-dimensional (3D) limit equilibrium method for slope stability analyses is presented, which applies linear algebra operations to matrices to achieve a highly efficient algorithm while maintaining the rigorousness of the formulation. It satisfies six equilibrium conditions and includes all of the components of the intercolumnar forces. The generalized 3D Morgenstern-Price's (MP) assumption for the intercolumn forces is recast into incremental forms. The advantage is that the unknowns of the different physical meanings (i.e., factor of safety (FS) and the coefficients in the MP assumption) are determined by balancing the forces and moments independently. Along with the recasting correction coefficients, they are solved with the triple nested algorithm. The numerical instability that is related to the different orders of magnitude for the residuals is avoided. The varication examples show: (i) the insensitivity of the FS to the prescribed functions in the MP assumption, (ii) the reliability of the method to cope with a complicated slope geometry (simplified methods may provide a larger FS for certain cases), and (iii) the superior efficiency of the algorithm (requires several seconds to converge). This study proposes a practical way to track the irregular 3D tension cracking by repeating the analysis and excluding the columns with the negative normal forces at the bottom. This formulation is applied to a valley landfill slope in China. In comparison to the two-dimensional analysis, there are more reasonable/cost-effective measures to increase the system stability through 3D analyses for several conditions (e.g., seismic loading).

Abstract:The pile is a widely used reinforcement device in geotechnical engineering. For the present paper, we propose a new solution for calculating the safety factor (SF) of the 3D slope reinforced with piles and determining the critical slip surface (CSS) in the framework of minimum potential energy method. In particular, the mobilized shear stress on failure surface is determined by the equilibrium equation of forces operating on slip body. Meanwhile, the moving direction of 3D slope is equivalent to the direction of combined force acting on slip body. Additionally, the present method is combined with the genetic algorithm to identify CSS, and a novel criterion is proposed to locate the shape and position of CSS of a 3D slope using the total potential energy of landslide system as the objective function. The validation and comparison of results indicate that the SF obtained by the introduced method are close to reference solutions, and SF shows an obvious negative correlation with sliding direction (SD). It is also found that the support effect of pile is related to the pile location and the pile density. Meanwhile, the optimal pile position depends on the shape of failure surface and shear strength parameter of soil. Moreover, the effects of some parameters on SD of 3D slopes reinforced with piles are also studied.

Abstract:This study proposes a theoretical model for evaluating the safety factor of a pile-stabilized slope using the monitored displacement of the sliding layer. The stabilizing force provided by the piles was determined using the subgrade reaction method, with the monitored displacement of the sliding layer as the primary input parameter. The sliding layer of the slope was considered as a rigid body sliding along the slip surface, assumed to be viscous-perfectly plastic with a Mohr-Coulomb failure condition. Based on the proposed model, the real-time safety factor of the slope could be determined using the limit equilibrium method based on the monitored displacement of the sliding layer. The model was applied to the Hongyan landslide to demonstrate its effectiveness. The results indicated that the model could reasonably predict the safety factor, offering practical convenience for engineers.

Abstract:Abstract The study proposes a geographic information systems (GIS)-based slope stability analysis method assuming a normal stress distribution acting on the slip surface. Compared with traditional methods, the three-dimensional (3D) safety factor acquired through this method will more closely approximate the actual value. First, a 3D slope stability analysis model is developed using grid column units, and the spatial expression of calculation parameters based on the grid column is given by the spatial analysis capability of GIS. Then, four equilibrium equations are derived under the limit equilibrium condition. The normal stress distribution acting on the slip surface is analyzed to construct a reasonable normal stress distribution approximation function. The 3D safety factor is obtained through the approximation function and the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. Moreover, we develop a GIS-based extension module which combines the grid-based data with the 3D slope stability analysis model. The accuracy and feasibility of the module are verified by three typical cases.

Abstract:The net moment of the column in the three‐dimensional limit equilibrium method is optimized by machine learning, and the internal force parameter of the minimum net moment of the column is used to calculate the safety factor. This method can be used for slope stability calculation of complex terrain. A calculation of the safety factor is the basis of slope stability analysis. The three‐dimensional (3D) limit equilibrium method is one of the most effective safety calculation methods, and ignoring the partial shear force between columns is the most common calculation assumption, which will lead to an unreasonable safety factor. By constraining the range of the intercolumn shear function and the position of the action point of the force between columns and integrating machine learning to optimize the net moment of the column, the simulated annealing algorithm is used to obtain the intercolumn shear function under the minimum net moment, and the safety factor is calculated by using boundary conditions. Finally, proving the accuracy of this method by calculating two examples of commonly used slopes. Example A verifies that the result of the proposed method is more conservative than that of other 3D calculation methods and that the coordinates of the action point of the intercolumn forces in the x and y directions have little influence on safety factor. Example B verifies the applicability of this method to various slope forms. This method fully considers the stress of soil under actual conditions, making the calculation results more reasonable.

Abstract:The route of the main sliding is considered to be a linear line in the existing three-dimensional limit equilibrium methods for slope stability analysis. However, there is a curvilinear route for the main sliding caused by the translational movement and the rotation of the sliding body in slope failures. In this study, a three-dimensional limit equilibrium method was proposed for slope stability with the curvilinear route of the main sliding. The basic physical quantities for slope stability analysis in the orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system were obtained by the mapping between the orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and the Cartesian coordinate system. The four equilibrium equations (a force equilibrium equation and three moment equilibrium equations) were established by the equilibrium conditions of the entire sliding body. The three-dimensional factor of safety for the slope with the curvilinear route of the main sliding was deduced by an analytical or a numerical method. Some examples proved that the present method can calculate the factor of safety and evaluate the stability of the slope. The results of examples showed that the factor of safety of the curvilinear route was significantly smaller than that of the linear route. The three-dimensional limit equilibrium method for slope stability analysis was further developed in this study, which provided a theoretical basis for the scientific and reasonable evaluation of slope stability.

Abstract:A simplified numerical method was proposed for computing the slip-line field, as well as the associated earth-pressure coefficient, in a cohesionless backfill with an inclined surface lying behind an inclined rough wall. The potential failure zone, in either active or passive cases, was divided into the Rankine zone, which was rigorously obtained by the theory of plasticity, and the transition zone being further divided into a series of triangular slices. Within the transition zone, the theoretical relationship between the inclination of the interslice force and that of the slip surface was established by satisfying the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, and equations involving the forces on a typical slice were formulated in accordance with the force and moment equilibrium conditions. An iterative procedure was presented for computing the lateral forces on the wall by adjusting the inclination of the slip surface until the stress condition on the upper boundary of the transition zone was satisfied, resulting in the two families of slip lines. Several examples demonstrate the slip-line field configurations, and the computed earth-pressure coefficients were found to agree fairly well with those of other numerical methods. Practical Applications The determination of earth pressures and the associated critical failure surface play an important role in the design of retaining walls and other problems of geotechnical engineering. Conventional methods are frequently used for this purpose, but the errors involved are sometimes unacceptably large in cases of inclined rough walls. Hence, certain numerical methods have been employed, which, despite their sophistication, have not yet approached exact solutions. This paper presents a simplified numerical procedure for approaching theoretical slip-line fields and earth-pressure coefficients for the most frequently encountered cases of inclined rough walls with inclined cohesionless backfills. With this method, no assumptions need to be made about the shape of the slip surface or the inclinations of the forces acting on the boundaries of the triangular slices, into which the potential slip zone is divided. Furthermore, both the stress equilibrium condition and the Mohr-Coulomb criterion were completely satisfied within the failure zone and on its boundaries. An effective iterative procedure was provided for determining the slip surface location, which converged rapidly, resulting in an approximately theoretical configuration of slip-line field and associated earth-pressure coefficient values if a sufficiently large number of triangular slices were employed.

Abstract:Abstract The determination of critical failure surface and stability evaluation of 3D slopes have been a hot and difficult problem in geotechnical engineering. The conventional method defines the critical failure surface using the safety factor (SF) whereas it is powerless for some special problems, such as two different failure surfaces with equal SFs. So far, many studies on the critical failure surface of a 3D slope have mainly focused on rotational ellipsoid, while less research has been done on the arbitrary shape. To solve the above problems, we develop a model for constructing a arbitrarily shaped failure surface and ascertain the critical failure surface by the sliding direction (SD). To verify rationality of the introduced theory, the critical failure surfaces of two benchmark symmetric slopes and corresponding SFs are reanalyzed, and the results are compared with the reference solutions. Meanwhile, the results obtained by the proposed method are also consistent with the reference solutions for the complex slope with the asymmetric failure surface. The parametric analysis explores the relationships between the mechanical properties of soil and the SD as well as the SF. Furthermore, influence factors of the spatial characteristics of sliding mass are also revealed. The proposed method is used as a helpful complement to the existing methods.

Abstract:Abstract This paper introduces a novel closed‐form equation (surrogate model) for approximating the Morgenstern–Price estimate of the factor of safety of homogeneous dry finite slopes with circular failure surfaces. Unlike typically used methods, the proposed equation does not require the definition of a critical failure surface, splitting the soil mass into slices, or the iterative reduction of soil resistance to the limit state. It can be easily programmed into calculators or computers and accurately determines the minimum factor of safety based on the shear strength parameters and slope geometry—meaning that it is ideally suited for integration into reliability calculations. The equation is determined parametrically for various soil parameters and slope geometry using the Morgenstern–Price method and compares favorably with conventional techniques, such as slope stability charts, limit equilibrium, and strength reduction methods (SRM). From a practical perspective, the proposed equation greatly simplifies the analysis of the slope stability as the creation of a numerical model is not required and is suited to use in the feasibility stage of a project, for example, for large linear infrastructure projects with differing slope geometries or in situations where a quick assessment is desired.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an improved and efficient analytical solution for evaluating the stability of 3D slopes based on the minimum potential energy method. The equilibrium equation of the landslide is employed to determine the shear stress on the failure surface, and a new formulation for shear potential energy is introduced. The vector-combined direction of the force acting on the landslide is considered equivalent to the sliding direction (SD). Two classic examples are reanalyzed to validate the accuracy and performance of the proposed method. The analysis demonstrates that the obtained results align well with reference solutions and tend to be conservative in engineering applications. Parameter investigations are conducted to explore the influences of SD, shear strength parameters, slope angle, and soil unit weight on the safety factor (SF) of 3D slopes. The findings indicate that a larger SD corresponds to a less stable slope. Finally, the effects of optimization parameters, landslide volume, and surcharge on the location of the failure surface, SF, and SD are also examined. The developed analytical approach offers a novel and straightforward solution with sufficient accuracy and eliminates the need for iteration in determining the SF, making it a valuable complementary method for assessing the stability of 3D slopes.

Abstract:Assessing the stability and the determining the critical slip surfaces (CSS) represent two significant endeavors concerning 3D seismic landslides. The minimum potential energy method is applied to evaluate the stability, with specific improvements proposed. Specially, the mobilized shear stress on slip surface is derived through the static equilibrium condition on x -axis direction of the sliding mass. The movement trajectory of a landslide (moving direction) is jointly determined by the forces acting on the sliding mass and is equivalent to the vector sum of these forces. Seismic acceleration is characterized using the pseudo-dynamic method, capturing the temporal and spatial variations in seismic forces. By considering the total potential energy of landslide as the objective function, a novel insight for identifying CSS of seismic-induced landslides is developed. A comparison and analysis show that the relative errors between the safety factor(SF) obtained using the proposed method and limit equilibrium method are less than 3%. Results also indicate that the proposed model can effectively determine the location and shape of CSS against 3D seismic landslides. A real case study shows that the proposed method not only accurately evaluates the stability and location of the slip surface of an actual slope but also yields spatial characteristic parameters of the sliding mass that are close to the measured values. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted on several parameters affecting the stability of seismic-induced landslide.

Abstract:Slope failure is a major hazard that threatens human lives and properties. Locating the critical slip surface (CSS) is more challenging than calculating the factor of safety (Fs) in slope stability analysis. There are some limitations in the existing methods for identifying the CSS. In this study, we propose a novel approach for determining the CSS. The strength reduction method (SRM) is introduced in the numerical manifold method (NMM) to compute the Fs and the distribution of equivalent plastic strain (EPS) for the slope in the limit equilibrium state, and then the CSS is obtained by fitting the maximum EPS points with the improved least square algorithm. The present method can handle complex geometries and various geomaterials without requiring any prior assumptions about the shape or location of the CSS. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by three typical examples of homogeneous, multi-layer and weak interlayer slopes.

Abstract:Earthquakes and groundwater are pivotal factors affecting slope stability. However, the majority of previous studies have focused on these factors individually, neglecting their combined effects. Hence, this paper aims to develop a framework using the kinematic approach of limit analysis to investigate the stability of slopes in partially saturated soils under the combined effects of seismic force and pore-water pressure. The pseudo-dynamic method (PDM) was employed to capture the temporal-spatial effect of horizontal and vertical seismic waves. Variations in suction and effective unit weight profiles with moisture content under steady-state unsaturated flow were considered. External rates arising from both static pore-water pressure and earthquake-induced excess pore-water pressure were incorporated into the energy-balance equation. With the aid of gravity increase method (GIM), an explicit expression of safety factor (FS) was derived and optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The validity of this approach was verified through a comparison with existing solutions. Parametric analyses were conducted to explore the influence of varying groundwater level, seismic coefficients, suction, three-dimensional effects, excess pore water pressure, unsaturated flow types, and pseudo-dynamic parameters, on the FS and critical sliding surface of slopes in partially saturated slopes. This framework can provide a good reference for the safety design of reservoir slope under the combined effects of earthquakes and groundwater.

Abstract:A 3D stability analysis is essential in slope designs, since it is more in line with real situation, and can provide more reasonable results than a 2D analysis. A numerical model termed as ISR3DNMM-GPS method is proposed for factor-of-safety (FOS) calculation and 3D failure surface (or critical slip surface) determination involved in a 3D slope stability analysis. In the proposed numerical model, an improved strength reduction technique (ISRT) which can avoid unreasonable plastic zones appearing in the deep area of a slope is implemented into the 3D numerical manifold method (3DNMM), and an improved strength-reduction-based 3DNMM (ISR3DNMM) is developed. With the proposed ISR3DNMM, the FOS and generalized plastic strain (GPS) field corresponding to slope’s failure state can be obtained simultaneously. Then, a group of useful 3D points locating within the plastic zone of the slope are further determined based on the 3D slope’s GPS field. With these 3D points, an improved least square method is adopted to obtain a rational 3D failure surface, which passes through the slope’s weakest point. With the proposed ISR3DNMM-GPS method, the stability of two typical 3D slopes are analyzed. The numerical results indicate that 3D slopes’ stability can be effectively analyzed with the proposed numerical model. The proposed numerical model deserves further investigation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional upper-bound analysis of rock slopes subjected to seepage flows is a classical problem in geotechnical engineering. However, it is difficult to obtain a rigorous upper-bound solution of the safety factor of slopes when seepage flows are involved. In order to address this problem, the three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic head distributions inside a slope under steady state hydraulic conditions are solved numerically. The obtained numerical hydraulic head distributions are further employed to compute the seepage forces applying to the 3D discretized rotational failure mechanism to assess the stability of a rock slope. The Hoek-Brown yield criterion is employed to characterize the failure of rock masses. The generalized tangential technique is employed to formulate the problem as a classical optimization problem. The particle swarm optimization algorithm combined with the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm is used to search for the best solutions of slope safety factor. The proposed approach is validated by comparing with 2D plane strain analysis results in the literature. Parametric analysis shows that the safety factor increases as <math>mi</math> or GSI increases, but decreases with the increase of the slope angle <math>β</math> and B/H. It is also found that the 3D influence is significant for B/H smaller than 10, beyond which it becomes negligible. The computational results in the form of design tables are presented for practical use in rock engineering.

At every moment, the stress field got from dynamic finite element analysis, and the critical slip surface is searched by genetic algorithm. So, the time-history of factor of safety is derived and has definite physical meaning. By inputing sine wave acceleration with different periods from the bed rock, the relation between the period and the factor of safety is studied. The results show that as the period of input becomes longer, the factor of safety becomes lower. The natural period and mode shape of the slope are investigated; and one can find the amplification of dynamic response cause by the coupling of the load period and the natural period of slope not only depends on the coupling of the period, but also the mode shape of the slope. Only when the mode shape is a vibration of the slope itself, the dynamic response will be amplified and the factor of safety will decrease.

Abstract:Reliability analysis of reinforced slopes is crucial in geotechnical engineering. In this study, a procedure is proposed for calculating the reliability of three-dimensional reinforced slopes, taking into consideration the spatial variability of soil strength parameters. An ellipsoidal sliding surface is utilized as an approximate substitute for the actual sliding surface. The Karhunen–Loève (K–L) expansion method is employed to generate random fields. The safety factor calculations are based on the Bishop method. The reliability is evaluated through the Monte Carlo simulation. Based on the procedure, the effects of different reinforcement parameters and random parameters on the mean safety factor and failure probability of three-dimensional slopes are studied and compared with the results of two-dimensional slopes. Notably, the implementation of an upper sparse and lower dense reinforcement scheme leads to a remarkable enhancement in slope reliability, resulting in a substantial 38.4% reduction in failure probability and a 2.4% increase in the safety factor. Additionally, an effective means of enhancing slope reliability is found to be the increase in the length and number of reinforcement layers. The reliability of 3D reinforced slopes is notably influenced by the spatial variability of soil strength parameters. The degree of influence of autocorrelation distance on the failure probability is ranked as l z > l x > l y . When l z increases from 1 to 5 m, the failure probability is increased by 221.85%, from 5.4 to 17.38%. As the correlation coefficient is increased from −0.7 to −0.3, the failure probability increased by 26.7%, from 23.2% to 29.4%. The comparison with 2D reinforced slopes reveals that 3D reinforced slopes demonstrate a higher safety factor and a lower failure probability. As a result, slope reliability is tended to be underestimated by the 2D slope analysis.
