Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationships of childhood obesity and the duration of sleep as well as insulin resistance. METHODS:Two hundred and sixty-nine simple obese children aged from 7 to 15 years with body mass index(BMI) over 23 and 120 normal healthy children were recruited in this study. Obese children were divided into three groups: Group A: 23 < or = BMI < 25; Group B: 25 < or = BMI < 30; Group C: BMI > or = 30. Duration of sleep was calculated according to the reported sleeping hours during working days and weekends. Oral glucose tolerance test and insulin releasing test were performed in all obese children. Seventy of the 120 healthy children received fasting plasma glucose (FBG) and fasting insulin (FINS) detection. Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and islet beta cell secreting index (HOMA-IS) were calculated. RESULTS:The duration of sleep was shorter in all 3 obese groups than that in the control group and the levels of FBG, FINS and HOMA-IR were higher (P < 0.05). The levels of HOMA-IS in Group B and C were higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05), while HOMA-IS did not show much difference among the 3 obese groups and between Group A and the control group (P > 0.05). Logistic analysis showed that the duration of sleep was related to childhood obese (P < 0.05). Results from multiple linear regression model analysis showed that BMI bore a relation to HOMA-IR and HOMA-IS (P < 0.05), as well as one unit increase in BMI accompanied with 0.261 and 11.054 increase in HOMA-IR and HOMA-IS, respectively. CONCLUSION:Children with shorter duration of sleep were susceptible to become obese. A significant correlation did exist between BMI and insulin resistance.
Risk Factors Associated with Short Sleep Duration among Chinese School-Aged Children

Abstract:Objectives: To examine risk factors regarding short sleep duration among Chinese school-aged children.Methods: A random sample of 20,778 children aged around 5-11 years participated in a cross-sectional survey, which was conducted in eight cities of China in 2005. A parent-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on children's sleep duration and possible related factors from eight domains. Short sleep duration was defined as total sleep duration <9 h per day.Results: In all, 28.3% of the sampled children slept <9 h per day. The multivariate logistic regression identified, after adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic variables, factors associated with short sleep duration: more television viewing during weekdays (OR = 1.21, p = 0.004), more frequent computer/internet using (OR = 1.17, p = 0.006), earlier school starting time (OR = 1.10, p = 0.020), more time on homework during weekdays (OR = 1.66, p < 0.001) and weekends (OR = 1.14, p = 0.001), poor bedtime hygiene (e.g., having drinks with caffeine after 6:00PM [OR = 1.22, p < 0.001], doing exciting activities during bedtime [OR = 1.16, p < 0.001], and irregular bedtime [OR = 1.55, p < 0.001]), and shorter sleep duration of parents (mother: OR = 1.31, p < 0.001 for sleep duration <6 h and OR = 1.24, p = 0.006 for 6-8 h; father: OR = 1.52, p < 0.001 for <6 h and OR = 1.19, p < 0.001 for 6-8 h).Conclusions: Factors associated with sleep duration covered multidimensional domains among school-aged children. Compared to sleep environments and chronic health problems, school schedules, lifestyle patterns, and parents' sleep habits had greater impact on children's sleep duration, indicating the existing chronic sleep loss in school children could be, at least partly, intervened by reducing the use of visual technologies, by changing the school schedules, by improving the sleep hygiene routine, and by regulating parents' sleep habits. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies in adults suggested that sleep could be a significant contributor to mental health. However, little is known about their relationship in adolescents. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine the overall associations of full-spectrum sleep behaviors, including sleep habits, sleep problems, and sleep hygiene, with mental health problems among adolescents in Shanghai, China. DESIGN: A stratified, cluster random sample of 4,823 adolescents aged 11 to 20 years participated in a cross-sectional survey. The Adolescent Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire and the modified Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale were used to examine sleep behaviors. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was used to evaluate mental health problems. RESULTS: Five sleep variables were found to be associated with adolescents' mental health. The five factors covered three sleep domains: sleep habits (later bedtime during weekdays), sleep problems (maintaining sleep difficulties, disorders of arousal), and sleep hygiene (poor emotion at bedtime, unstable sleep schedule). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical significance of the findings lies in the emphasis of comprehensive screening of sleep in the predicting, diagnosis, nursing, and intervention of adolescents' mental health problems.
Sleep Duration and Overweight/Obesity in Preschool-Aged Children: A Prospective Study of Up to 48,922 Children of the Jiaxing Birth Cohort.

Abstract:STUDY OBJECTIVESTo examine the association between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children.METHODSA total of 48,922 3-year old children enrolled in the Jiaxing Birth Cohort, who provided sleep information and anthropometric data, were included in the present study as baseline and were followed up to 5 years of age. Sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 10 hours, 11-12 hours, and ≥ 13 hours. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the cut point criteria in China. Prevalence ratios and risk ratios were used to assess the association between sleep duration and risk of overweight/obesity.RESULTSIn cross-sectional analyses at baseline, the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight (with 11-12 h of sleep being considered the reference group) for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.13 (1.06-1.20) and 1.16 (1.09-1.24), respectively, whereas the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.25 (1.11-1.40) and 1.25 (1.11-1.42). In longitudinal analyses, the adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.48 (1.26-1.74) and 1.13 (0.96-1.34), while adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.77 (1.30-2.40) and 1.19 (0.85-1.66). Restricted cubic splines regression supported U-shaped curvilinear associations between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.CONCLUSIONSBoth short and overlong sleep duration are associated with a higher risk of overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children. Optimizing sleep duration may be an important modifiable intervention for overweight and obesity.

Abstract:Objective To examine the relationship between sleep and obesity in children 3 to 4 years old in Shanghai, China.Study design A total of 1311 Chinese children from 10 kindergarten classes in Shanghai, aged 3 to 4 years, who were participating in the kindergarten entrance health examination in 2000, were included in the study. Body weight and height were measured, and a questionnaire was given to the children's parents about sleep and physical and social characteristics of the children and their family. The main outcome measure was obesity, defined as body mass index (kg/m(2)) >= 95th percentile for the children.Results Compared with children reporting >= 11 hours of sleep per night, the odds ratio for childhood obesity was 4.76 (95% Cl, 1.28-17.69) for children with <9 hours of sleep, and 3.42 (95% Cl, 1.12-10.46) for children with 9.0 to 9.4 hours of sleep, after adjustment for age, sex, and other risk factors. Children with caregivers who slept less, who had mothers with higher education, or who co-slept with caregivers had less nighttime sleep than other children.Conclusion Short sleep duration is positively associated with obesity in preschool children, and short nighttime sleep duration is significantly related to bedtime and co-sleeping with caregivers. Abstract:Objective: To analyze the relationship between insufficient sleep and obesity or central obesity in Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9-18 years. Methods: A total of 172 710 students who participated in the 2014 Chinese National Survey on Students Constitution and Health with complete data of sleep duration and physical examination, were selected as study subjects. Insufficient sleep was defined, according to the amount of sleep for pediatric populations recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Obesity and central obesity of children and adolescents were judged by experts from the Group of China Obesity Task Force and Health Industry Standards in China. Differences between groups were compared by using the t test or χ(2) test. Logistic regression method was applied to assess the relationship between insufficient sleep and obesity or central obesity. Results: In 2014, numbers of students with insufficient sleep, obesity and central obesity among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9-18 years appeared as 133 410 (77.2%), 11 145 (6.5%), and 12 603 (17.8%), respectively. Among the students with insufficient sleep, 8 358 (6.3%) were with obesity and 12 244 (17.9%) were with central obesity. The prevalence of obesity and central obesity among boys with insufficient sleep was higher than that in girls. Pupils with insufficient sleep showed the highest prevalence of obesity and central obesity. After controlling for potential confounders, the risk of obesity appeared an increase of 14.5% (OR=1.145, 95%CI: 1.092-1.200) and the risk of central obesity increased by 12.7% (OR=1.127, 95%CI: 1.078-1.178) in students with insufficient sleep, when compared with those with adequate sleep. Compared with those whose daily sleep duration was less than 6 hours, the ones who slept 7-10 hours per day showed significantly reduction on the risk of obesity and central obesity in students. Conclusions: Insufficient sleep significantly increase the risk of obesity and central obesity in children and adolescents while adequate sleep of 7-10 hours per day would reduce the risk of obesity and central obesity in students.
Healthier Dietary Patterns Are Associated with Better Sleep Quality among Shanghai Suburban Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: More is to be explored between dietary patterns and sleep quality in the Chinese adult population. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 7987 Shanghai suburban adults aged 20–74 years was conducted. Dietary information was obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Adherence to a priori dietary patterns, such as the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and Mediterranean diet (MD), was assessed. Sleep quality was assessed from self-reported responses to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Logistic regression models adjusting for confounders were employed to examine the associations. Results: The overall prevalence of poor sleep (PSQI score ≥ 5) was 28.46%. Factor analysis demonstrated four a posteriori dietary patterns. Participants with a higher CHEI (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.70–0.95), DASH (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.60–0.82) or MD (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.64–0.87) had a lower poor sleep prevalence, while participants with a higher "Beverages" score had a higher poor sleep prevalence (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02–1.27). Conclusions: In Shanghai suburban adults, healthier dietary patterns and lower consumption of beverages were associated with better sleep quality.

Abstract:Background Sleep is an essential health behavior, and sleep difficulties are strongly associated with adolescent health, potentially leading to more severe sleep disorders. The beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) in alleviating sleep difficulties have been well-documented. Numerous investigations reveal influence in moderate to high-intensity physical activity (PA) positively influences sleep quality. Despite these findings, a gap in the literature exists, particularly regarding the association between frequency of vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA) and sleep difficulties. Aim This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by exploring the link between sleep difficulty and frequency of VPA among adolescents. Insights are derived from analyzing data accumulated from the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) project. Methods The analysis in this study utilized cross-sectional data from the HBSC (2017/2018). The study sample comprised a total of 171,233 respondents aged 11, 13, and 15 years, with males representing 51.1% of sample. Measurement instruments included a self-administered questionnaire, providing direct insight into sleep difficulty and frequency of VPA levels. Statistical analysis on the associaiton between frequency of VPA and sleep difficulties was conducted using Generalized Linear Models. Results 50.0% of adolescents reported no sleep difficulties, while 12.3% experienced sleep issues daily. Additionally, 17.1% of adolescents engaged in frequency of VPA on a daily basis, while 6.4% never participated in such activities. daily VPA was associated with fewer sleep difficulties (OR = 1.07 [1.00, 1.15]), 4–6 times a week (OR = 1.08 [1.01, 1.15]), and 2–3 times a week (OR = 1.08 [1.02, 1.16]). However, no significant association was found between sleep difficulties and frequency of VPA in girls. Furthermore, a negative association was observed between sleep difficulties and all frequencies of VPA (p < 0.05) in 11-year-old adolescents. For 13-year-olds, daily VPA was significantly associated with fewer sleep difficulties (OR = 1.10 [1.02, 1.19]), 4–6 times a week (OR = 1.15 [1.07, 1.24]), 2–3 times a week (OR = 1.19 [1.10, 1.27]), and once a week (OR = 1.13 [1.05, 1.22]). However, no significant association was found between sleep difficulties and frequency of VPA in 15-year-old adolescents. Conclusion More participations in VPA would be an effective approach to reduce sleep difficulties in adolescents. Insights gleaned from this research illustrate a discernible link between sleep difficulty and frequency of VPA, particularly notable in male and 13-year-old participants. It is also imperative to underscore the variability in the connection between sleep difficulty and frequency of VPA, distinctly influenced by factors such as gender and age. Consequently, tailoring sleep intervention methodologies to align with the specific needs dictated by these variables emerges as a pivotal recommendation.

Abstract:Objective To examine the association between mental health problems and sleep habits among Chinese adolescents,including sleep duration,bed time,wake time on weekdays and weekends,and sleep stability,in order to provide reference for prevention and improving mental health of adolescents.Methods A method of stratified,cluster random sample was conducted,and totally 4 966 adolescents aged 11 ～ 20 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional survey.The Modified Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (M-ASHS) was used to assess sleep habits.The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to evaluate mental health problems.Results Among adolescents involved in the survey,of whom 46.4％had a sleep duration less than 8 hours on weekdays,7.6％ had a sleep duration less than 8 hours on weekends,47.5％ had bed time later than 22:00 on weekdays,39.8 ％ had bed time later than 22:30 on weekends,45.2 ％ had awakening time later than 8:00 on weekends,22.55 ％ had irregular sleep schedule;8.7 ％ of the sampled adolescents had mental health problems.After controlling for confounders,five sleep variables were found to be associated with adolescents mental health.The five factors covered three sleep domains:sleep duration less than 8 hours on weekdays and weekends (OR=1.77,1.65,95 ％CI:1.13～2.76,1.12～2.43,P=0.012,0.011),bed time later on weekdays and weekends (OR=1.73,1.37,95％CI:1.30～2.31,1.07～1.77,P＜0.001,P=0.014),and irregular sleep schedule (OR=1.48,95％CI:1.08～2.02,P=0.014).Conclusion It is suggested that sleep hygiene education should be strengthened to help adolescents develop good sleep habits,including enough sleep duration,early to bed and wake up earlier,and regular sleep schedule,in order to promote prevention and intervention of mental health problems.
Associations of multiple sleep dimensions with overall and abdominal obesity among children and adolescents: a population-based cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background The relationship of insufficient sleep with the increased risk of obesity has been reported, but less is known about other sleep dimensions in the sleep-obesity associations. Objectives To assess the associations of multiple sleep dimensions with overall and abdominal obesity among Chinese students. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 10,686 Han students aged 9–18 from Chinese National Survey on Students’ Constitution and Health (CNSSCH). We collected sex, age, regions, parental educational levels, physical activity duration and sleep-related information by questionnaire survey, and also conducted anthropometric measurements including height, weight and waist circumference (WC). Unadjusted and adjusted binary logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations of sleep-related dimensions with obesity-related indicators. Results Short sleep duration was associated with higher body mass index (BMI), larger WC and higher waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in 9–12 and 16–18 age groups, whereas prolonged sleep duration on weekday was associated with higher BMI in 13–15 age group. Non-habitual midday napping and midday napping ≤0.5 h/d (vs 0.5 to 1 h/d) increased the risk of higher BMI in 13–15 age group, and the former was also associated with larger WC in 9–12 age group. Late bedtime was associated with larger WC and higher WHtR in 9–12 age group and with higher BMI and WHtR in 13–15 age group. Students aged 9–12 with social jet lag ≥2 h were found to have greater BMI after adjustment (Odds Ratio: 1.421; 95% confidence interval: 1.066–1.894). Conclusions Short or overlong sleep duration, late bedtime and great social jet lag were associated with higher prevalence of overall or abdominal obesity, while moderate midday napping can effectively decrease the risk. Those findings may assist in developing preventive strategies to combat obesity epidemic.

Abstract:Summary Background Insufficient sleep and skipping breakfast are very common phenomena in China and have been proposed as possible causes of overweight/obesity, but the results of former studies remain inconsistent. Objective To investigate the individual and joint association of insufficient sleep and skipping breakfast with overweight/obesity among children and adolescents in Jiangsu Province, China. Methods Participants were 36 849 students aged 8–17 years from the 2019–2020 project "Surveillance for common disease and health risk factors among students." Self‐reported insufficient sleep and skipping breakfast were ascertained by self‐reported sleep duration and breakfast habit. Overweight/obesity was assessed according to the gender‐ and age‐specific body mass index. We used logistic regression models to explore the association of sleep and breakfast with overweight/obesity, and stratification analyses to test age or gender differences. Results The overall prevalence of overweight/obesity was 33.2%. Insufficient sleep (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.03–1.16) or skipping breakfast (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.07–1.21) was associated with overweight/obesity. Compared to participants with 'sufficient sleep and breakfast', ORs were 1.25 (95% CI = 1.15–1.35) for those with 'both insufficient sleep and skipping breakfast'. The separate and joint association of sleep and breakfast with overweight/obesity remained generally consistent across different age and gender subgroups, except that the 8–12‐year‐olds group and female students appear more susceptible. Conclusions Insufficient sleep and skipping breakfast were jointly associated with overweight/obesity in children and adolescents. Appropriate attention should be paid to these modifiable behaviours including sleep and breakfast in the context of the rapidly growing obesity epidemic among children and adolescents.

Abstract:Abstract Background and objective The high prevalence of obesity is a serious problem, and sleep is considered to be a factor for obesity. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration, sleep quality, and weight status among children and adolescents in China and to explore whether the relationship between sleep duration and weight status is independent of sleep quality. Sex and age differences were also explored. Methods A cross-sectional research was conducted among 2019 children and adolescents (1029 boys and 990 girls) aged 8–16 years in Shanghai. An open-question was used to obtain data on sleep duration, which was categorized into the following four groups based on the age-specific National Sleep Foundation Sleep Duration Recommendations: 1) very short, 2) short, 3) recommended, and 4) long. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality. Weight and height were measured for all participants. The variable weight status was estimated with the Chinese children and adolescent age- and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) and was categorized into overweight/obesity and normal weight. Results Short sleep duration (7–8 and 6–7 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively) significantly increased odds of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06–1.64) compared with that of the recommended sleep duration (9–11 and 8–10 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively). The relationship between the two variables existed independent of sleep quality. No significant relationship was found between sleep quality and overweight/obesity of children and adolescents. Sleep quality (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01–1.14) and short sleep duration (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06–2.13) increased the risk for overweight/obesity among girls, whereas no significant relationships between sleep duration, sleep quality, and overweight/obesity were found among boys. Short sleep duration increased the risk of overweight/obesity in children aged 8–13 years (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.05–1.71), independent of sleep quality, but no significant relationships between these two variables existed for adolescents aged 14–16 years. Conclusions Overall, short sleep duration increased the risks of overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in China, independent of sleep quality. This relationship is significant for girls and children aged 8–13 years instead of boys and adolescents aged 14–16 years. Interventions to extend the sleep duration of children and adolescents, especially girls and children aged 8–13 years in China, are necessary to improve their weight status.

Abstract:BackgroundSleep is an important contributor to physical and mental health; however, chronic sleep deprivation has become common in adolescents, especially on weekdays. Adolescents aged 14–17 years are recommended to sleep between 8 and 10 h per night to maximize overall health and well-being. Although sleep needs may vary between individuals, sleep duration recommendations are important for surveillance and help inform policies, interventions, and the population of healthy sleep behaviors. Long sleepers are very rare among teenagers and sleeping too much is not a problem per se; only insufficient sleep is associated with adverse health outcomes in the pediatric population. Causes of insufficient sleep are numerous and chronic sleep deprivation poses a serious threat to the academic success, health and safety of adolescents. This article focuses on the link between insufficient sleep and obesity in adolescents.DiscussionThis “call to action” article argues that sleep should be taken more seriously by the public health community and by our society in general, i.e., given as much attention and resources as nutrition and physical activity. Not only that having a good night’s sleep is as important as eating a healthy diet and being regularly physically active for overall health, but sleeping habits also impact eating and screen time behaviors and, therefore, can influence body weight control.SummaryShort sleep duration, poor sleep quality, and late bedtimes are all associated with excess food intake, poor diet quality, and obesity in adolescents. Sleep, sedentary behavior, physical activity and diet all interact and influence each other to ultimately impact health. A holistic approach to health (i.e., the whole day matters) targeting all of these behaviors synergistically is needed to optimize the impact of our interventions. Sleep is not a waste of time and sleep hygiene is an important factor to consider in the prevention and treatment of obesity.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:With rapid urbanization accompanied by lifestyle changes, children and adolescents living in metropolitan areas are faced with many time use choices that compete with sleep. This study reports on the sleep hygiene of urban Chinese school students, and investigates the relationship between habitual after-school activities and sleep duration, schedule and quality on a regular school day. METHODS:Cross-sectional, school-based survey of school children (Grades 4-8) living in Shanghai, China, conducted in 2011. Self-reported data were collected on students' sleep duration and timing, sleep quality, habitual after-school activities (i.e. homework, leisure-time physical activity, recreational screen time and school commuting time), and potential correlates. RESULTS:Mean sleep duration of this sample (mean age: 11.5-years; 48.6% girls) was 9 hours. Nearly 30% of students reported daytime tiredness. On school nights, girls slept less (p<0.001) and went to bed later (p<0.001), a sex difference that was more pronounced in older students. Age by sex interactions were observed for both sleep duration (p=0.005) and bedtime (p=0.002). Prolonged time spent on homework and mobile phone playing was related to shorter sleep duration and later bedtime. Adjusting for all other factors, with each additional hour of mobile phone playing, the odds of daytime tiredness and having difficulty maintaining sleep increased by 30% and 27% among secondary students, respectively. CONCLUSION:There are sex differences in sleep duration, schedule and quality. Habitual activities had small but significant associations with sleep hygiene outcomes especially among secondary school students. Intervention strategies such as limiting children's use of electronic screen devices after school are implicated.

Abstract:The conventional methods for the microbiological examination of natural mineral water were compared with a simplified procedure. The results indicate that when indicator micro-organisms are present in water, they may not be detected in the simplified method. An alternative procedure, including the determination of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is suggested.

Abstract:Unhealthy lifestyles among adolescents are reaching alarming levels and have become a major public health problem. This study aimed to assess the relationship between sleep time, physical activity (PA) time, screen time (ST), and nutritional literacy (NL). Methods: This cross-sectional online study involving adolescents aged 10–18 years was conducted in September 2020 in 239 schools in Chongqing, China. NL was measured using the "Nutrition Literacy Scale for middle school students in Chongqing (CM-NLS)". According to the recommended by the Chinese dietary guidelines (2022), we divided the sleep time of junior high school students into <9 h and ≥9 h, high school students into <8 h and ≥8 h, divided the workdays into weekend PA time < 1 h and ≥1 h, and divided the workdays into weekend ST < 2 h and ≥2 h. The multinomial logistic regression model was used to examine the association. Results: A total of 18,660 adolescents (50.2% males) were included. The proportion of participants that were junior high school students and attended boarding schools was 57.2% and 65.3%, respectively. Compared with senior high school students, junior high school students had a higher level of NL. Whether on workdays or weekends, participants with sleep time ≥ 8/9 h, PA time ≥ 1 h, and ST < 2 h per day had higher levels of NL. On weekdays, participants who met the sleep time ≥ 8 h/9 h (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.36, 1.62) and PA time ≥ 1 h (OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.59, 1.81) had higher reporting of NL levels. Conclusions: Sleep time, PA time, and ST were positively correlated with NL among adolescents, especially junior high school students.

Abstract:The academic success of children contributes to their income, social status, and public health. This study was conducted with 217 elementary school students from western China. Scores on the Chinese Children Dietary Index (CCDI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), adjusted DASH, and KIDMED index were calculated to evaluate diet quality. Eating behavior and sleep quality were assessed using the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CHSQ), respectively. Academic achievement was measured using school-provided average grades. Higher CCDI scores, longer sleep time, lower total CHSQ scores, and lower subscores on "satiety responsiveness," "slowness in eating," "emotional undereating," and "food fussiness" dimensions of the CEBQ were associated with high academic achievement. In conclusion, good diet quality, sleep quality, healthy eating behaviors, and adequate sleep duration were associated with better academic performance. Interventions are recommended to be developed in education system to improve healthy diets and lifestyles, enhancing academic achievement.

Abstract:This study examined how short sleep impacts dietary consumption in adolescents by testing whether experimentally shortening sleep influences the amount, macronutrient content, food types, and timing of food consumed. Ninety-three adolescents completed a within-subjects crossover paradigm comparing five nights of short sleep (6.5-hour sleep opportunity) to five nights of Healthy Sleep (9.5-hour sleep opportunity). Within each condition, adolescents completed three multiple-pass dietary recalls that recorded the types, amount, and timing of food intake. The following outcomes were averaged across days of dietary recall within condition: kilocalories, grams of carbohydrates, fat, protein, and added sugars, glycemic load of foods, and servings of specific types of foods (low-calorie drinks, sweetened drinks, fruits/vegetables, meats/proteins, processed snacks, "fast food" entrees, grains, and sweets/desserts). Timing of consumption of kilocalorie and macronutrient outcomes were also examined across four noncumulative time bins: 06:00-10:59, 11:00-15:59, 16:00-20:59, and 21:00-01:00. Adolescents slept 2 h and 20 min longer in Healthy Sleep than in Short Sleep (p < .0001). While in Short Sleep, adolescents ate more grams of carbohydrates (p = .031) and added sugars (p = .047), foods higher in glycemic load (p = .013), and servings of sweet drinks (p = .023) and ate fewer servings of fruits/vegetables (p = .006) compared to Healthy Sleep. Differences in consumption of kilocalories, fat, and carbohydrates emerged after 9:00 pm (ps = .012, .043, .006, respectively). These experimental findings suggest that adolescents who have insufficient sleep exhibit dietary patterns that may increase the risk for negative weight and cardiometabolic outcomes. Future health promotion efforts should include promoting optimal sleep to increase healthy dietary habits.
