Abstract:This paper presents a novel joint network and channel decoding-interference canceling (JNCD-IC) algorithm for HARQ in wireless broadcasting system. In this system, the base station uses network coding for retransmission. In the retransmission phase, JNCD-IC scheme is proposed for the receivers to recover multiple error packets from the composite packet which is formed by XORing error packets from different receivers. Traditionally, receivers can only recovery one error packet from the composite packet using XOR method when it knows all the other packets in this composite packet as a prior, while the JNCD-IC scheme is trying to recovery multiple error packets from the composite packet by treating the network code and channel code as a single parity check product code. Simulation results for Rayleigh block fading channel show a significant increase in throughput compared to the current schemes.

Abstract:Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising multiplexing approach to achieve high system capacity. In this paper, we develop a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme for SCMA systems combined with Low-density Parity-check (LDPC) decoding. In particular, we decompose the output of the message passing algorithm (MPA) based SCMA multiuser detection into intrinsic part and prior part. Then we design a joint detection and decoding scheme which iteratively exchanges the intrinsic information between the detector and the decoder, yielding a satisfied performance gain. Moreover, the proposed scheme has almost the same complexity compared with the traditional receiver for LDPC-coded SCMA systems. As numerical results demonstrate, the proposed scheme has a substantial gain over the traditional SCMA receiver on AWGN channels and Rayleigh fading channels.

Abstract:Joint source channel anytime coding (JSCAC) is a kind of joint source channel coding (JSCC) systems based on the causal spatially coupled coding and joint expanding window decoding (JEWD) techniques. JSCAC demonstrates greatly improved error correction performance, as well as higher decoding complexity. This work proposes a joint hybrid window decoding (JHWD) algorithm for JSCAC systems, aiming to reduce the decoding complexity while maintaining comparable error correction performance with the state of the art. Unlike the traditional JEWD technique and its variants, the proposed JHWD algorithm utilizes a hybrid window structure. It achieves this by implementing adaptive local expanding window decoding in the sliding window region, guided by syndrome-check-based detection. The hybrid window decoding characteristics of the proposed JHWD algorithm can both effectively reduce the decoding complexity caused by window expanding, and also mitigate the error propagation caused by window sliding. An improved density evolution algorithm is proposed for the asymptotic performance analysis of the proposed JHWD algorithm. Both the analytical and simulation results indicate that the proposed JHWD decoding scheme is a good low-complexity implementation option for JSCAC systems, which is also suitable for other JSCC systems with the spatially coupled coding structure.

Reliability-Based Windowed Decoding for Spatially-Coupled LDPC Codes

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a reliability-based windowed decoding scheme for spatially-coupled (SC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. To mitigate the error propagation along the sliding windowed decoder of the SC LDPC codes, a partial message reservation (PMR) method is proposed where only the reliable messages generated in the previous decoding window are reserved for the next decoding window. We also propose a partial syndrome check (PSC) stopping rule for each decoding window, in which only the complete VNs are checked. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme significantly improves the error floor performance compared to the sliding windowed decoder with the conventional weighted bit-flipping (WBF) algorithm.

Is MAC Joint Decoding Optimal for Interference Channels?

Abstract:Harsh interference is a major obstacle to achieve high capacity, especially when the state-of-the-art wireless networks intend to reuse the same resource. Information theoretic study shows that joint decoding with interference can achieve the sum capacity of a strong interference channel. However, the optimal joint decoding technique is too complex for practical applications, because it requires detecting and decoding all messages simultaneously. A two-user strong interference channel can be formed by two two- user multiple access channels (MACs), so a natural question arises as whether the decoding schemes optimal for the MAC remains optimal when applied to the interference channel. This paper investigates the relevant decoding techniques, namely the MAC rate splitting (RS) and iterative detection-decoding. Although these techniques have been shown to be optimal for MACs, we show that they cannot achieve the optimal performance anymore under interference channels.

Abstract:Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM), which has been proven to be powerful when applied in Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) Sum-Product} Algorithm (SPA) decoder, is a bandwidth efficient coding scheme. However, the BICM-SPA decoder does not take the statistical dependencies between bits from the same $L$-ary modulated symbol into account so that it cannot converge to the Maximum A-Posteriori (MAP) decoding algorithm. In this paper, an improved SPA decoding algorithm for the LDPC code, which combines decoding and demodulation, is proposed. The proposed decoding algorithm, referred to as the BICM-ISPA, is based on generalized distributive law Generalized Distributive Law and derived from the generalized symbol SPA under certain rational assumptions. And the BICM-ISPA can asymptotically converge to the MAP decoding solution algorithm. Simulation results show that the BICM-ISPA decoder jointly optimizes the decoding error performance and the computational complexity of the LDPC code over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. Compared with the BICM-SPA decoder, the advantage of the BICM-ISPA is quite significant with a large modulation size and in the scenario where Gray mapping cannot be used. © 2006 IEEE.
A Novel HARQ-CC Assisted SCMA Scheme

Abstract:This letter proposes a novel hybrid automatic repeat request with chase combining assisted sparse code multiple access (HARQ-CC-SCMA) scheme. Depending on whether the same superimposed packet are retransmitted, synchronous and asynchronous modes are considered for retransmissions. Moreover, factor graph aggregation (FGA) and Log-likelihood ratio combination (LLRC) are proposed for multi-user detection. Regarding FGA, a large-scale factor graph is constructed by combining all the received superimposed signals and message passing algorithm (MAP) is applied to calculate log-likelihood ratio (LLR). Whereas, owing to the same unsuccessful messages required to be retransmitted, LLRC adds up LLRs of erroneously received packets in previous HARQ rounds together with currently received packets for channel decoding and saves the LLRs for failed users. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are preformed to show that FGA surpasses LLRC and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) in synchronous mode. However, LLRC performs better than FGA at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in asynchronous mode. This is because failed messages after the maximum allowable HARQ rounds in this mode can yield significant error propagation in low SNR regime.

Abstract:In this paper, a method for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) based on concatenated spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes is investigated. A construction consisting of two SC-LDPC codes is proposed: one for source coding and the other for channel coding, with a joint belief propagation-based decoder. Also, a novel windowed decoding (WD) scheme is presented with significantly reduced latency and complexity requirements. The asymptotic behavior for various graph node degrees is analyzed using a protograph-based Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart analysis for both LDPC block codes with block decoding and for SC-LDPC codes with the WD scheme, showing robust performance for concatenated SC-LDPC codes. Simulation results show a notable performance improvement compared to existing state-of-the-art JSCC schemes based on LDPC codes with comparable latency and complexity constraints.

Abstract:Spatially coupled (SC) interleaving is proposed to improve the performance of iterative multiuser detection and decoding (MUDD) for quasi-static fading multiple-input multiple-output systems. The linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) demodulator is used to reduce the complexity and to avoid error propagation. Furthermore, sliding window MUDD is proposed to circumvent an increase of the decoding latency due to SC interleaving. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that SC interleaving can improve the performance of the iterative LMMSE MUDD for regular low-density parity-check codes.

Abstract:Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is an emerging paradigm for efficient enabling of massive connectivity in future machine-type communications (MTC). In this letter, we conceive the uplink transmissions of the low-density parity check (LDPC) coded SCMA system. Traditional receiver design of LDPC-SCMA system, which is based on message passing algorithm (MPA) for multiuser detection followed by individual LDPC decoding, may suffer from the drawback of the high complexity and large decoding latency, especially when the system has large codebook size and/or high overloading factor. To address this problem, we introduce a novel receiver design by applying the expectation propagation algorithm (EPA) to the joint detection and decoding (JDD) involving an aggregated factor graph of LDPC code and sparse codebooks. Our numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed EPA based JDD receiver over the conventional Turbo receiver in terms of both significantly lower complexity and faster convergence rate without noticeable error rate performance degradation.

Abstract:We propose quasi ordered statistic decoding (quasi-OSD) of binary image of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and explore the application of RS codes to joint source-channel coding (JSCC). Unlike the conventional OSD algorithms that use Gaussian elimination to obtain the systematic matrix, the proposed quasi-OSD algorithm utilizes the parallel Lagrange interpolation at the symbol level, which achieves a lower complexity and comparable performance compared with the locally constrained OSD (LC-OSD), for high-rate RS codes in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Additionally, we apply RS codes to the JSCC with known source statistics. At the transmitter, a new partition criterion is introduced in the classified enumerative (CE) coding to encode the source information. Then the multiple-rate RS coding transforms the variable-length codeword of the CE coding into a fixed-length transmitted codeword. At the receiver, parallel decoding is performed to recover the source. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed JSCC scheme outperforms the double polar JSCC scheme by one dB, as expected by Gallager's JSCC bound.

A Low Complexity SCMA Detector Based on Avoiding Redundant Iterations

Abstract:Sparse code multiple access (SCMA), a competitive air-interface technology with the message passing algorithm (MPA) employed at the receiver, has a broad application prospect. However, the computational complexity of MPA is still an extreme challenge for SCMA decoding. In this paper, a low complexity multiuser detection algorithm based on avoiding redundant iterations, namely Avoiding Redundant Iterations-MPA (ARI-MPA), is proposed for the uplink SCMA system. ARI-MPA can achieve low complexity by avoiding redundant iterations, in which the number of iterations required is determined by the convergence rate of codeword probability. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve an affordable trade-off between bit error ratio (BER) performance and decoding complexity for the SCMA system.

Abstract:Due to its simplicity and scalability, the Irregular Repetition Slotted ALOHA (IRSA) system that uses the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique is a promising solution for uncoordinated multiple access of a massive number of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. However, the peeling (iterative) decoder for IRSA is sequential in nature, and it might lead to cascading errors due to imperfect SIC. In this paper, we propose a parallel decoding algorithm for IRSA in an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. Inspired by a recent advance in collision resolution for random access, our approach is to find a SIC-decoupling matrix so that the receiver can perform interference cancellation based on the received signals only. We propose a message-passing algorithm to find the optimal SIC-decoupling matrix when the induced user-slot bipartite graph of an IRSA system is acyclic. This includes the Contention Resolution Diversity Slotted ALOHA (CRDSA) system that sends exactly two copies for each packet. Using a random graph analysis, we derive the throughput for parallel decoding of CRDSA in a threshold-based decoding model. We also conduct various numerical experiments to illustrate the tradeoffs between sequential decoding with a limited number of iterations and parallel decoding with a predefined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold. Our numerical results show that one can significantly reduce the decoding time and achieve comparable throughput by parallel decoding when the SNR is substantially larger than the decoding threshold.

Abstract:Sliding window decoding has been employed as the decoding scheme of quasi-cyclic spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (QC-SC-LDPC) codes, with the decoding latency and complexity independent of the coupling length but proportional to the window size. The window size was empirically chosen at least three times the constraint length in previous works, which results in the preference of QC-SC-LDPC codes with small constraint length, to reduce the decoding latency and complexity in practical systems. However, the code design freedom and the decoder throughput are limited for these QC-SC-LDPC codes. In this paper, the optimal window size under the constraint of practical decoding complexity is analyzed employing multi-edge-type density evolution (MET-DE). It can be verified from the MET-DE analytical result that the optimal window size could achieve less than twice the constraint length for several edge spreading patterns, which largely loose this restriction in practical code design. Furthermore, it could be observed that besides the constraint length, the specific structure of the edge spreading pattern could affect the optimal window size as well, and thus the MET-DE analytical method for the optimal window size could effectively guide the design of QC-SC-LDPC codes in practical systems. Then an improved sliding window decoding scheme is proposed, including the optimal choice of window size and a parity-check based early termination scheme. Finally, the performance and robustness of the proposed sliding window decoding scheme for QC-SC-LDPC codes are demonstrated via simulation, with the decoding complexity at most twice as that of the conventional LDPC coded schemes.
Neural Window Decoder for SC-LDPC Codes

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a neural window decoder (NWD) for spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes. The proposed NWD retains the conventional window decoder (WD) process but incorporates trainable neural weights. To train the weights of NWD, we introduce two novel training strategies. First, we restrict the loss function to target variable nodes (VNs) of the window, which prunes the neural network and accordingly enhances training efficiency. Second, we employ the active learning technique with a normalized loss term to prevent the training process from biasing toward specific training regions. Next, we develop a systematic method to derive non-uniform schedules for the NWD based on the training results. We introduce trainable damping factors that reflect the relative importance of check node (CN) updates. By skipping updates with less importance, we can omit $\mathbf{41\%}$ of CN updates without performance degradation compared to the conventional WD. Lastly, we address the error propagation problem inherent in SC-LDPC codes by deploying a complementary weight set, which is activated when an error is detected in the previous window. This adaptive decoding strategy effectively mitigates error propagation without requiring modifications to the code and decoder structures.

Abstract:Spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SCLDPC) codes, which are capable of universally achieving capacity over different channels, could be a potential candidate of error control channel codes employed in flexible transmission schemes for future broadcasting systems. Sliding window decoding is believed the preferred decoding method for SC-LDPC codes, due to its lower decoding latency and complexity compared to conventional full belief propagation (BP) decoding, and is studied in this paper for SC-LDPC codes under broadcasting scenario. More specially, the optimal window size for sliding window decoding is investigated in this paper to improve the decoding performance under practical constraints of decoding complexity and latency in broadcasting systems. The early termination strategies are also considered to further reduce the decoding complexity. Finally, simulation results are presented, which demonstrate that the proposed sliding window decoding method has decoding complexity comparable to conventional LDPC decoding and shows consistent excellent decoding performance.

Abstract:In this work, we aim to bring sparse code multiple access (SCMA) technology closer to a practical realization by dropping the assumption of synchronization. We propose a compressed sensing‐based delay estimation technique developed specifically for an uplink SCMA system. We derive a theoretical bound regarding the recovery performance of the proposed technique and use simulations to demonstrate its viability in a practical uplink system. Summary Despite being the subject of a growing body of research, nonorthogonal multiple access has failed to garner sufficient support to be included in modern standards. One of the more promising approaches to nonorthogonal multiple access is sparse code multiple access, which seeks to utilize nonorthogonal, sparse spreading codes to share bandwidth among users more efficiently than traditional orthogonal methods. Nearly all of the studies regarding sparse code multiple access assume synchronization at the receiver, which may not always be a practical assumption. In this work, we aim to bring this promising technology closer to a practical realization by dropping the assumption of synchronization. We therefore propose a compressed sensing‐based delay estimation technique developed specifically for an uplink sparse code multiple access system. The proposed technique can be used with nearly all of the numerous decoding algorithms proposed in the existing literature, including the popular message passing approach. Furthermore, we derive a theoretical bound regarding the recovery performance of the proposed technique and use simulations to demonstrate its viability in a practical uplink system.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme that combines error resilient arithmetic codes (ERAC) and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In the proposed scheme, the error detection capability of ERAC is exploited by the bit-interleaving technique to improve the performance of LDPC decoder, and the overall decoding performance. Simulation results show that the proposed approach achieves significant performance gains with respect to the separated decoding techniques, with additional advantage of high scalability and flexibility.

Abstract:In practical asynchronous bi-directional relaying, symbols transmitted by two sources cannot arrive at the relay with perfect frame and symbol alignments and the asynchronous multiple-access channel (MAC) should be seriously considered. Recently, Lu et al. proposed a Tanner-graph representation of the symbol-asynchronous MAC with rectangular-pulse shaping and further developed the message-passing algorithm for optimal decoding of the symbol-asynchronous physical-layer network coding. In this paper, we present a general channel model for the asynchronous MAC with arbitrary pulse-shaping. Then, the Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, and Raviv (BCJR) algorithm is developed for optimal decoding of the asynchronous MAC channel. For Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC)-coded BPSK signalling over the symbol-asynchronous MAC, we present a formal log-domain generalized sum-product-algorithm (Log-G-SPA) for efficient decoding. Furthermore, we propose to use cyclic codes for combating the frame-asynchronism and the resolution of the relative delay inherent in this approach can be achieved by employing the simple cyclic-redundancy-check (CRC) coding technique. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
