Abstract:Improper use of electronic media is considered a major contributing factor to childhood obesity. However, exergames, a new generation of active games, have made it possible to combine electronic entertainment with physical exercise. The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the use of exergaming as a strategic tool in the fight against childhood obesity. Information was retrieved from the databases SciELO, LILACS, Pubmed, Ebsco, and Science Direct, using the search words “egames,” “exergames,” “exergaming,” “new generation of video games,” “active video games,” “energy expenditure,” “body composition,” and “physical activity” in English and Portuguese, covering the period January 2008 to April 2012. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Exergaming was found to increase physical activity levels, energy expenditure, maximal oxygen uptake, heart rate, and percentage of physical activity engaged in and to reduce waist circumference and sedentary screen time. Thus, exergaming may be considered a highly relevant strategic tool for the adoption of an active and healthy lifestyle and may be useful in the fight against childhood obesity.
IMPACT OF EXERGAMES ON BMI AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Exergames or active video games are digital platforms with functionality associated with body movement, which dialogue with improving physical activity levels, stimulating pleasure in practice and adherence to change habits, physically active behavior, and better quality of life. Objective: This study aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the contribution of exergame to Body Mass Index, physical activity level, glycemic control, blood pressure, and cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents. Methods: This is a systematic review, reported following the PRISMA writing recommendations, without language restrictions, for articles indexed in the following databases: MEDLINE / PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs. Data extraction was performed analogously in a spreadsheet previously tested and standardized. The assessment of the risk of bias in the included studies was carried out by the RoB 1.0 tool in all of its domains in duplicate of reviewers. Initially, 3.039 studies were found. Results: The studies cover a total of 526 adolescents aged ten to 19. The most used platform in the studies was the Nintendo Wii, followed by the PlayStation, Xbox 360, and Dance Dance Revolution. The results indicated that interventions using exergames were effective for changing BMI, but there was no evidence on cardiovascular outcomes, with no effective changes in glycemic control and blood pressure and a significant response (p <0.05) in cardiorespiratory fitness. Conclusion: The exergame points to satisfactory results in improving health and can be incorporated as a relevant public policy in the adolescent health promotion. Acute Hematologic and Mucosal Toxicities in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy: A Comparison of 3D-CRT, IMRT, and Helical Tomotherapy

Abstract:IMRT and helical tomotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment are associated with higher doses to certain non-target tissues than traditional static beam techniques. We hypothesized that this may lead to higher acute mucosal and hematologic toxicities. This analysis was limited to 178 patients receiving >60 Gy with concurrent weekly cisplatin. Radiation delivery used 3D-CRT in 41 patients (23%), conventional IMRT in 56 patients (31%), and helical tomotherapy in 81 patients (46%). Acute mucositis rates, weekly hematologic parameters, and ability to deliver planned chemotherapy cycles were examined for each patient during their course of chemoradiotherapy. Analysis showed patients were well balanced with regard to sex, age, and stage. Treatment time, as assessed by delivered monitor units, varied significantly between the 3D-CRT (median = 502), IMRT (median = 1087), and tomotherapy (median = 6757) cohorts. Acute mucositis grades did not significantly differ between the three subsets. Through six weeks of chemoradiotherapy, the median decline in hemoglobin was 15.6%, the median decline in platelets was 30.6%, and the median decline in leukocytes was 51.5%, but these drops were not significantly different between treatment cohorts. Chemotherapy was discontinued or held secondary to hematologic toxicity in 12% of 3D-CRT patients, 5% of IMRT patients and 15% of tomotherapy patients (p = 0.14). In conclusion, HNC patients undergoing high dose radiation with concurrent weekly cisplatin chemotherapy, the longer beam-on times and larger volumes of low-to-moderate radiation doses to non-target tissues associated with modern IMRT delivery techniques do not appear to result in increased acute hematologic or mucosal toxicities.

Métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática, relatada seguindo as recomendações de redação do PRISMA, sem restrição de idioma, para artigos indexados nas seguintes bases de dados: MEDLINE / PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library e Lilacs. A extração dos dados foi realizada de forma análoga em planilha previamente testada e padronizada. A avaliação do risco de viés nos estudos incluídos foi realizada pela ferramenta RoB 1.0 em todos os seus domínios em duplicata de revisores. Inicialmente, foram encontrados 3.039 estudos. Resultados: Os estudos abrangeram um total de 526 adolescentes de dez a 19 anos. A plataforma mais utilizada nos estudos foi o Nintendo Wii, seguido do PlayStation, Xbox 360 e Dance Dance Revolution. Os resultados indicaram que as intervenções com exergames foram eficazes para alterar o IMC, mas não houve evidências sobre os desfechos cardiovasculares, sem alterações eficazes no controle glicêmico e na pressão arterial e uma resposta significativa (p <0,05) na aptidão cardiorrespiratória. Conclusão: O exergame aponta resultados satisfatórios na melhoria da saúde e pode ser incorporado como uma política pública relevante na promoção da saúde do adolescente. Abstract:To examine associations between video game play and obesity in children.Based on a scoping review of 26 studies (25 cross-sectional; 1 longitudinal) published in 2013–2018, 14 studies (53%) reported no association between video game play and obesity, and 12 studies reported positive associations. In a review of 8 systematic reviews, there was preliminary evidence on the effectiveness of exergame (physically active) play for weight reduction and to attenuate weight gain but little indication that interventions effectively reduced video game play or general screen time.

Abstract:Children and adolescents are not meeting the required federal physical activity (PA) guidelines established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It is critical that a regular pattern of PA is established in their youth to ensure ongoing PA into adulthood. However, many programs implemented during adolescence have shown limited effects, stressing the need for more innovative approaches to generate more interest and maintenance of PA behavior in this age group. Active video games (AVGs) or exergaming may prove to be an innovate process to improve PA in children and adolescents. A literature review was conducted to explore if active video games or exergaming could be an effective intervention to improve physical activity in adolescents. Active video games, also called “exergames”, are a category of video games that require movement or physical exertion to play the game. The methodology consisted of searching Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, ERIC, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. Inclusion criteria involved only youth aged 12 to 19 years, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and studies within the last 12 years. The following search terms were used: exergaming or active video games; physical activity or exercise; adolescents or youth; RCT or randomized clinical trial. The outcome indicates that exergaming or active video games can be an effective tool to improve PA in adolescents that will be more acceptable and sustainable than many conventional approaches.

Abstract:Sedentary behavior and inadequate energy expenditure are serious global public health concerns among youngsters. The exponential growth in technology emerges as a valuable opportunity to foster physical activity, particularly through active video games. We performed a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus to provide a comprehensive view of the literature on energy expenditure levels among adolescents while playing active video games. Among the 574 manuscripts identified at the first screening stage, 23 were retained for analysis. Ten studies were characterized by longitudinal and thirteen by cross-sectional designs. The results showed that short-term active video games elicited energy expenditure values comparable to moderate-intensity physical activity (3–6 METs). However, in intervention programs (with at least six weeks) the results indicate no significant effects of active video games on youngsters’ energy expenditure levels and physical activity profiles between baseline and follow-up assessments. Overall, active video games based on sports and dance were the most used, and boys tended to achieve higher energy expenditure than girls. The diversity of methods implemented limits comparing results and drawing generalized conclusions. However, considering its attractiveness to youth, active video games might emerge as a complementary tool to traditional physical activities promoted in schools and local communities. Details regarding gender differences and contradictory results of longitudinal approaches should be considered in future research based on standardized methods.

Abstract:Jogos tecnológicos que promovem movimentos nos praticantes destacam-se no mercado e atraem mais adeptos. Torna-se válido o estudo dos protocolos de uso de exergames no combate à obesidade em adolescentes e, este artigo, apresenta uma revisão integrativa da literatura que abrangeu cinco bases de dados no intuito de investigar e identificar protocolos de uso de exergames com resultados positivos contra o sobrepeso no público adolescente. Verificou-se, em um dos protocolos que, apenas trinta minutos semanais, ao longo de seis semanas, houve impactos significativos nos índices de saúde de adolescentes. Os exergames aumentam os níveis da atividade física e efeitos semelhantes as atividades convencionais. Conclui-se que os exergames reforçam as novas possibilidades de práticas corporais existentes visando promoção da saúde e, se utilizados de forma orientada, se caracterizam como estratégias de mudança de hábitos físicos em adolescentes, proporcionando variados ganhos à saúde. It becomes valid to study protocols for the use of exergames in the fight against obesity in adolescents, and this article presents an integrative literature review that covered five databases in order to investigate and identify protocols for the use of exergames with positive results against overweight in teenagers. It was found, in one of the protocols, that just thirty minutes a week, over six weeks, had significant impacts on the health indices of adolescents. Exergames increase levels of physical activity and have similar effects to conventional activities. It is concluded that exergames reinforce the new possibilities of existing body practices aimed at promoting health and, if used in a targeted manner, are characterized as strategies for changing physical habits in adolescents, providing various health gains. The effectiveness of exergames in improving physical activity behaviour and physical literacy domains in adolescents with developmental coordination disorder and cerebral palsy: A scoping review

Abstract:Background: A large proportion of adolescents with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are physically inactive. Physical literacy has been described as an important determinant in promoting health behaviours. The potential of exergames to improve physical literacy and activity has been recognized in typically developing children. The aim of the present scoping review was to identify and map the available evidence of this potential for adolescents with DCD. Methods: A scoping review was performed via a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, ERIC and CINHAIL. Results: From 2860 search records, six studies (two studies in DCD and four studies in cerebral palsy [CP]) assessed physical activity, 12 studies discussed exergame features and 16 studies assessed physical literacy domains. In DCD, one study showed positive effects of exergaming on physical activity and the other failed to show any significant effects of exergaming. In CP, all four studies demonstrated positive effects of exergaming on energy expenditure and daily physical activity. Furthermore, positive effects of exergames on the different physical literacy domains were shown, namely motor competence, self-concept and affect, motivation and social/experiential. Finally, exergame features including multiplayer modes, realism, game rewards, challenges and enjoyment were shown to have a significant effect on motivating and encouraging adolescents to exert more effort while playing. Conclusion: Based on the positive effects of exergaming on physical activity in other populations, more in-depth research in adolescents with DCD is warranted such that the decline in physical activity behaviour that is present in individuals with DCD can be counteracted. Physical literacy should be regarded as an important determinant in this regard.

Abstract:The ability of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) to suppress T‐cell function has prompted their therapeutic use for graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD) control. However, as MSC also modulate the activity of NK cells, which play an important role in graft‐versus‐leukemia (GVL) reaction, their administration could hamper this beneficial effect of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. MSC can be expanded from several sources, especially bone marrow and fat, but it is not well established if the cell source makes a difference in their immunoregulatory capacity.

Abstract:Background: Few school settings offer opportunities for preschool children to engage in structured physical activity, and only a few studies have been conducted examining exergaming's effectiveness on health outcomes in this age group. This study's purpose, therefore, was to examine a school-based exergaming intervention's effect on preschool children's perceived competence (PC), motor skill competence (MSC), and physical activity versus usual care (recess), as well as to examine gender differences for these outcomes. Methods: A total of 65 preschool children from 2 underserved urban schools were assigned to 1 of 2 conditions, with the school as the experimental unit: (1) usual care recess group (8 weeks of 100 min of recess/week (5 days x 20 min)) and (2) exergaming intervention group (8 weeks of 100 min of exergaming/week (5 days x 20 min) at school). All children underwent identical assessments of PC, MSC, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at baseline and at the end of the 8th week. Results: A significant Group x Time effect was observed for MVPA, F(1, 52) = 4.37, p = 0.04, eta(2)(p) = 0.04, but not for PC, F(1, 52) = 0.83, p = 0.37, eta(2)(p) = 2 0.02, or MSC, F(1, 52) = 0.02, p = 0.88, eta(2)(p) = 0.00. Specifically, the intervention children displayed significantly greater increased MVPA after 8 weeks than the comparison children. Additionally, there was a significant time effect for MSC, F(1, 52) = 15.61, p < 0.01, eta(2)(p) = 0.23, and gender effect for MVPA, F(1, 52) = 5.06, p = 0.02, eta(2)(p) = 0.09. Although all preschoolers' MSC improved across time, boys demonstrated greater MVPA than girls at both time points. Conclusion: Exergaming showed a positive effect in promoting preschool children's MVPA at school and has the potential to enhance PC and MSC. Abstract:Mrs A, an active 60-year-old woman, has a history of degenerative osteoarthritis of her knee with pain that has progressed over the past 8 years. She has undergone arthroscopic surgery for a meniscal tear and has taken nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate occasionally, but generally does not like taking medications. She is open to other therapeutic approaches and wants to know if acupuncture can help the pain, improve function, and stop her condition from progressing. The evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture for knee pain and other common treatments, including exercise, NSAIDs, glucosamine and chondroitin, and intra-articular knee injections are compared, and costs and methods of acupuncture and selecting an acupuncturist are discussed.

Abstract:The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared obesity as a 21st-century epidemic after reaching global proportions. In Spain, this disease is suffered by 62% of the population, leading to the emergence of new health problems. Increasing childhood obesity in the world is a direct result of changes in the lifestyles of the population. Therefore, in this paper we present a gamification training program to prevent childhood obesity based on motor games, and active videogames developed for overweight children ages 8–12. The design of the program consisted of: group sessions in a school setting, individual sessions at home for the children, and developing healthy habits to help families. The motivation and the effectiveness of the gamification training program were studied. The results involving biometric variables, learning healthy habits and experience in the intervention were highly satisfactory.

Exergaming: A Good Exercise Option During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate Wii sports programs as a potential physical activity solution to increasing inactivity among young adults and potentially improving the immune system. An evaluation was done on five Wii Sports games, including tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing. Measures included caloric expenditure and metabolic equivalents (MET) expended. A total of 16 subjects participated in two interactive video game sessions that took place over a 14-day period, in which their caloric expenditure (based on metabolic equivalents and rate of perceived exertion [RPE]) was compared with accepted reference values associated with playing the actual sports. Results showed that Wii sports were associated with higher MET values than published norms for other actual sports, and all Wii sports showed caloric expenditure that was four to ten times higher than traditional sedentary gaming. In conclusion, the results justify the integration of interactive video-gaming technologies into future fitness programs targeted toward young adults and, consequently, decrease the risk of metabolic syndrome and obesity.
The Physical Effect of Exergames in Healthy Elderly—A Systematic Review

Abstract:Exergames have been suggested as an innovative approach to enhance physical activity in the elderly. The objective of this review was to determine the effectiveness of exergames on validated quantitative physical outcomes in healthy elderly individuals. We used Centre for Review and Disseminations guidance to conduct systematic reviews. Four electronic databases were searched. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the study participants were healthy elderly individuals, and the intervention of interest was exergaming. The title and abstract screening of the 1861 citations identified 36 studies as potentially eligible for this review, and an additional nine were identified from reference lists. The full text screening identified seven studies with a total of 311 participants, all reporting RCTs with low-to-moderate methodological quality. Six of the seven studies found a positive effect of exergaming on the health of the elderly. However, the variation of intervention approaches and outcome data collected limited the extent to which studies could be compared. This review demonstrates how exergames have a potential to improve physical health in the elderly. However, there is a need for additional and better-designed studies that assess the effectiveness and long-term adherence of exergames designed specifically for the elderly.

Hereditary heparin cofactor II deficiency and thrombosis: report of six patients belonging to two separate kindreds

Abstract:We describe six patients belonging to two families with congenital heparin cofactor II deficiency (HC II). The affected members had low levels of HC II antigen and activity, and no abnormalities in HC II electrophoretic mobility were detected in the presence of heparin or dermatan sulphate during the first migration of crossed Immunoelectrophoresis. These data suggested that patients had a type I (true) HC II deficiency. The association of thrombotic manifestations with congenital HC II deficiency has not been completely clarified. In these two families, thrombotic events occurred in two out of six affected members. In addition, there was a high incidence of spontaneous abortion in the affected females. Finally, the association of congenital HC II deficiency with angiomatosis was also observed in one patient

Abstract:This parallel randomized controlled trial was aimed to evaluate whether parameters as physical fitness, reaction times, self-perception and enjoyment levels, as well as parental and children perspectives, were affected by active video games in inactive and technologically preoccupied children. Data were collected in a laboratory setting from four randomly selected urban public schools. All 1300 children in grades 3-6 were surveyed for the study. Among the 918 responders, 106 children were determined to be inactive and preoccupied with technology. Children in 3 schools (n = 53) allocated to active video game and in one school (n = 53) allocated to control group were compared by univariate covariance analyses for primary outcomes such as weight, body mass index and fat ratios at the end of 12 weeks. Active video game group significantly showed favourable responses for weight, body mass index and corresponding z scores as well as reaction times and self-perception controlling for age and baseline scores. In addition, enjoyment of the children in the game group by qualitative analysis was high indicating a motivational aspect for the continuation of the games. Diverse contributions of games to physical, social, intellectual and personal development were revealed.Conclusion: Active video games by promoting enjoyment levels and physical activity, as well as contributing to agility, alertness, socializing, and striving, led to a reduction in weight gain. They may be used as beneficial tools diverting children from inactivity and subsequent obesity.Trial registration: This study called AVGAME is registered with the number NCT03720938 in Clinicaltrials.gov . The trial protocol can also be retrieved from the archives of Abant Izzet Baysal University. What is Known: • Nowadays, children prefer sedentary video games that are known to induce weight gain and obesity-related comorbidities. • Active video games were shown to decrease weight in overweight and obese children. What is New: • Active video games decrease weight increment and reaction times, thus could be used to prevent obesity in inactive non-obese children. • Active video games raise self-esteem, induce enjoyment, improve the personal and intellectual development of children in addition to socializing and is a safe alternative to indoor sedentary video games.
Digital Gaming and Pediatric Obesity: At the Intersection of Science and Social Policy

Abstract:Children and adolescents in developed countries are heavily immersed in digital media, creating an inexpensive, far-reaching marketing opportunity for the food industry and the gaming industry. However, exposure to nonnutritious food and beverage advertisements combined with the use of stationary media create a conflict between entertainment and public health. Using the popular digital gaming platforms advergames (online games that market branded products) and exergames (video games that involves gross motor activity for play) as exemplars, the following article provides an analysis of the negative and positive health impacts of digital gaming as they relate specifically to overweight and obesity outcomes for children and adolescents. Theoretical explanations including the food marketing defense model, persuasion knowledge model, and social cognitive theory are used to explain the influence of gaming on young players' health. Throughout the article, we discuss the role of public policy to encourage the development and use of health-promoting digital games as an innovative, effective tool to combat the pediatric obesity crisis.
Effects of home‐based exergaming on cardio‐metabolic and cognitive health in physically inactive individuals

Abstract:Aims To examine the effects of a home‐based exergame training over 6 weeks on cardio‐metabolic and cognitive health, as well as training adherence, in physically inactive individuals. Materials and Methods Twenty participants were equipped with an exergame system specifically designed for use at home. Each participant performed at least three weekly exercise sessions at ≥80% of their individual maximum heart rate, over 6 weeks. Exercise duration increased biweekly until 75 min of vigorous exercise were performed in Weeks 5 and 6. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), cardio‐metabolic profiling, and neuro‐cognitive tests were performed at baseline and study end. Additionally, training adherence was assessed via training diaries. Results After 6 weeks of home‐based exergaming, VO2max increased significantly, while there was a significant decrease in heart rate (resting and maximum), blood pressure (systolic, diastolic and mean), and low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol. Dynamic balance and reaction time improved after 6 weeks of exergaming. Training adherence was 88.4%. Conclusions Home‐based exergaming induced a clinically relevant increase in VO2max, a determinant of cardiovascular health, accompanied by further improvements in cardiovascular, metabolic and neuro‐cognitive parameters. Exergaming may, therefore, offer an innovative approach to increasing regular physical activity, improving metabolic risk profile, and preventing chronic diseases.

Abstract:Obesity is associated with various dysfunctions of the organism, including musculoskeletal problems. In this narrative review, we aim to consider postural problems in children and adolescents with obesity, focusing on the relationship with its negative impact on physical activity, and to discuss the role of exercise as a therapeutic approach. The body reacts to excess weight by changing its normal balance, and the somatosensory system of children with obesity is forced to make major adjustments to compensate for postural problems. These adaptations become more difficult and tiring if activities that require continuous postural changes and multi-tasking are engaged in. Children with obesity have less body control and functional ability due to the excess fat mass, which reduces their ability to perform motor skills and take part in physical activity. Appropriate early interventions for the management of musculoskeletal problems are needed to ensure healthy growth and to prevent comorbidities in childhood and adulthood. Prevention programs must be based not only on the reduction of body weight but also on the definition of correct postural habits from an early age. It is equally important to provide correct information on the types and doses of physical activity that can help prevent these problems.
