Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs),as one of the most attractive research topics,offer unique advantages,such as high selectivity,predefined recognition properties,ease of preparation, low-cost production. The recent developments in the field of MIPs-based chemical sensors and sensor arrays are reviewed. The individual sensors with high selectivity,including electrochemical sensors, photochemical sensors and quality sensitive sensors are presented. Sensor arrays based on cross-reactivity of MIPs show limited application. Specifically,photochemical sensor arrays are discussed. The future development of MIPs-based sensors and sensor arrays would be guided by the understanding of imprinting process. MIPs-based sensors and sensor arrays chould show potential application in various fields,such as food analysis,drug control and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have had tremendous impact on biomimetic recognition due to their precise specificity and high affinity comparable to that of antibodies, which has shown the great advantages of easy preparation, good stability and low cost. The combination of MIPs with other analytical technologies can not only achieve rapid extraction and sensitive detection of target compounds, improving the level of analysis, but also achieve precise targeted delivery, in-vivo imaging and other applications. Among them, the recognition mechanism plays a vital role in chemical and biological sensing, while the improvement of the recognition element, such as the addition of new nanomaterials, can greatly improve the analytical performance of the sensor, especially in terms of selectivity. Currently, due to the need for rapid diagnosis and improved sensing properties (such as selectivity, stability, and cost-effectiveness), researchers are investigating new recognition elements and their combinations to improve the recognition capabilities of chemical sensing and bio-sensing. Therefore, this review mainly discusses the design strategies of optical sensors, electrochemical sensors and photoelectric sensors with molecular imprinting technology and their applications in environmental systems, food fields, drug detection and biology including bacteria and viruses.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) technology and its prospective used in the surveillance of the environment are the focus of this review article, which aims to give an in-depth understanding of the field. The approach of generating highly cross-linked polymeric structures with effective binding sites that precisely match the analyte of interest by templating with it is covered in the study as a means of producing biomimetic ligands. It also highlights the stability and robustness of MIPs, making them ideal for challenging environmental conditions. The originality of this paper lies in its exploration of various physical forms and synthesis techniques of MIPs, as well as the development of specialized MIPs to address specific challenges. It emphasizes the diverse applications of MIPs in environmental monitoring, including sample pretreatment, solid-phase extraction, microextraction, sensors, and chromatographic separations with the discussion on integration of MIPs with advanced analytical tools, highlighting the potential for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of environmental monitoring. Furthermore, the integration of MIPs with advanced analytical instruments opens up new possibilities for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of detection systems. Capillary electrochromatography and thin-layer chromatography are mentioned as the examples of analytical techniques that can be seamlessly integrated with MIPs. This integration enables improved accuracy and reliability in environmental monitoring, enhancing our understanding and protection of the environment. It not only explores the fundamentals of MIP technology but also delves into the synthesis methods, specialized MIPs, and integration with advanced analytical instruments. Abstract:This review is dedicated to the development of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the application of MIPs in sensor design. MIP-based biological recognition parts can replace receptors or antibodies, which are rather expensive. Conducting polymers show unique properties that are applicable in sensor design. Therefore, MIP-based conducting polymers, including polypyrrole, polythiophene, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polyaniline and ortho-phenylenediamine are frequently applied in sensor design. Some other materials that can be molecularly imprinted are also overviewed in this review. Among many imprintable materials conducting polymer, polypyrrole is one of the most suitable for molecular imprinting of various targets ranging from small organics up to rather large proteins. Some attention in this review is dedicated to overview methods applied to design MIP-based sensing structures. Some attention is dedicated to the physicochemical methods applied for the transduction of analytical signals. Expected new trends and horizons in the application of MIP-based structures are also discussed.

Abstract:Background: Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs), a type of biomimetic materials have attracted considerable interest owing to their cost-effectiveness, good physiochemical stability, favorable specificity and selectivity for target analytes, and long shelf life. These materials are able to mimic natural recognition entities, including biological receptors and antibodies, providing a versatile platform to achieve the desirable functionality for various biomedical applications. Objective: In this review article, we introduce the most recent development of MIPs to date. We first highlight the advantages of using MIPs for a broad range of biomedical applications. We then review their various methods of synthesis along with their latest progress in biomedical applications, including biosensing, drug delivery, cell imaging and drug discovery. Lastly, the existing challenges and future perspectives of MIPs for biomedical applications are briefly discussed. Conclusion: We envision that MIPs may be used as potential materials for diverse biomedical applications in the near future.

Abstract:Abstract Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are handmade receptors that mimic the binding of natural antibodies. In other words, MIPs can selectively bind to the target molecule and qualify as bio-inspired synthetic materials. Today, MIPs are used extensively and are being developed further for biological applications. High cost and time consuming techniques are compelling factors for the field of biochemistry, biomedicine and biotechnology (3B), and there is an urgent need for an alternative, cheap, easy to produce, fast and effective method in these fields. MIPs stand out as a promising way for this purpose. MIPs have superiorities such as specific recognition specificity, excellent sensitivity selectivity and reusability. From this point of view, we examined MIP-related drug delivery studies, cell recognition, enzyme applications, in vivo applications, and applications for some important biomolecules. The aim of this review is to compile the utilizations, advantages, important developments and future expectations of MIPs for the fields of 3B.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a type of biomimetic material, have attracted considerable interest owing to their cost-effectiveness, good physiochemical stability, favourable specificity and selectivity for target analytes, and widely used for various biological applications. It was demonstrated that MIPs with significant selectivity towards protein-based targets could be applied in medicine, diagnostics, proteomics, environmental analysis, sensors, various in vivo and/or in vitro applications, drug delivery systems, etc. This review provides an overview of MIPs dedicated to biomedical applications and insights into perspectives on the application of MIPs in newly emerging areas of biotechnology. Many different protocols applied for the synthesis of MIPs are overviewed in this review. The templates used for molecular imprinting vary from the minor glycosylated glycan-based structures, amino acids, and proteins to whole bacteria, which are also overviewed in this review. Economic, environmental, rapid preparation, stability, and reproducibility have been highlighted as significant advantages of MIPs. Particularly, some specialized MIPs, in addition to molecular recognition properties, can have high catalytic activity, which in some cases could be compared with other bio-catalytic systems. Therefore, such MIPs belong to the class of so-called 'artificial enzymes'. The discussion provided in this manuscript furnishes a comparative analysis of different approaches developed, underlining their relative advantages and disadvantages highlighting trends and possible future directions of MIP technology.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the imprinting technique provide polymeric material with recognition elements similar to natural antibodies. The template of choice (i.e., the antigen) can be almost any type of smaller or larger molecule, protein, or even tissue. There are various formats of MIPs developed for different medical purposes, such as targeting, imaging, assay diagnostics, and biomarker detection. Biologically applied MIPs are widely used and currently developed for medical applications, and targeting the antigen with MIPs can also help in personalized medicine. The synthetic recognition sites of the MIPs can be tailor-made to function as analytics, diagnostics, and drug delivery systems. This review will cover the promising clinical applications of different MIP systems recently developed for disease diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:The accurate detection of biological materials has remained at the forefront of scientific research for decades. This includes the detection of molecules, proteins, and bacteria. Biomimetic sensors look to replicate the sensitive and selective mechanisms that are found in biological systems and incorporate these properties into functional sensing platforms. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic receptors that can form high affinity binding sites complementary to the specific analyte of interest. They utilise the shape, size, and functionality to produce sensitive and selective recognition of target analytes. One route of synthesizing MIPs is through electropolymerization, utilising predominantly constant potential methods or cyclic voltammetry. This methodology allows for the formation of a polymer directly onto the surface of a transducer. The thickness, morphology, and topography of the films can be manipulated specifically for each template. Recently, numerous reviews have been published in the production and sensing applications of MIPs; however, there are few reports on the use of electrosynthesized MIPs (eMIPs). The number of publications and citations utilising eMIPs is increasing each year, with a review produced on the topic in 2012. This review will primarily focus on advancements from 2012 in the use of eMIPs in sensing platforms for the detection of biologically relevant materials, including the development of increased polymer layer dimensions for whole bacteria detection and the use of mixed monomer compositions to increase selectivity toward analytes.

Abstract:Inspired by the recognition mechanism of biological molecules, molecular imprinting techniques (MITs) are imparted with numerous merits like excellent stability, recognition specificity, adsorption properties, and easy synthesis processes, and thus broaden the avenues for convenient fabrication protocol of bio-inspired molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with desirable functions to satisfy the extensive demands of biomedical applications. Herein, the recent research progress made with respect to bio-inspired imprinting materials is discussed in this review. First, the underlying mechanism and basic components of a typical molecular imprinting procedure are briefly explored. Then, emphasis is put on the introduction of diverse MITs and novel bio-inspired imprinting materials. Following these two sections, practical applications of MIPs in the field of biomedical science are focused on. Last but not least, perspectives on the remaining challenges and future development of bio-inspired imprinting materials are presented.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have become more prevalent in fabricating sensor applications, particularly in medicine, pharmaceuticals, food quality monitoring, and the environment. The ease of their preparation, adaptability of templates, superior affinity and specificity, improved stability, and the possibility for downsizing are only a few benefits of these sensors. Moreover, from a medical perspective, monitoring therapeutic medications and determining pharmaceutical compounds in their pharmaceutical forms and biological systems is very important. Additionally, because medications are hazardous to the environment, effective, quick, and affordable determination in the surrounding environment is of major importance. Concerning a variety of performance criteria, including sensitivity, specificity, low detection limits, and affordability, MIP sensors outperform other published technologies for analyzing pharmaceutical drugs. MIP sensors have, therefore, been widely used as one of the most crucial techniques for analyzing pharmaceuticals. The first part of this review provides a detailed explanation of the many polymerization techniques that were employed to create high-performing MIP sensors. In the subsequent section of the review, the utilization of MIP-based sensors for quantifying the drugs in their pharmaceutical preparation, biological specimens, and environmental samples are covered in depth. Finally, a critical evaluation of the potential future research paths for MIP-based sensors clarifies the use of MIP in pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificially synthesized materials to mimic the molecular recognition process of biological macromolecules such as substrate-enzyme or antigen-antibody. The combination of these biomimetic materials with electrochemical techniques has allowed the development of advanced sensing devices, which significantly improve the performance of bare or catalyst-modified sensors, being able to unleash new applications. However, despite the high selectivity that MIPs exhibit, those can still show some cross-response towards other compounds, especially with chemically analogous (bio)molecules. Thus, the combination of MIPs with chemometric methods opens the room for the development of what could be considered a new type of electronic tongues, i.e. sensor array systems, based on its usage. In this direction, this review provides an overview of the more common synthetic approaches, as well as the strategies that can be used to achieve the integration of MIPs and electrochemical sensors, followed by some recent examples over different areas in order to illustrate the potential of such combination in very diverse applications.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are promising receptors for a wide range of targeted molecules. In recent years, the construction of low molecular weight materials became possible based on the idea of molecular imprinting. The recent applications of MIPs are discussed with a brief computational chemistry to illustrate the design of MIPs. The different routes for the covalent and non-covalent imprinting in MIPs are highlighted in this review. The incorporation of optical, thermo-responsive, magnetic, and photocatalytic materials facilitated the development of multifunctional hybrid molecularly imprinted materials. MIPs have enormous beneficial aspects like high selectivity and specificity toward the targeted molecules. They are easy to synthesize, cost-effective, and reliable at different conditions like pH, temperature, and pressure. Additionally, the changeable properties of MIPs could be achieved by the different combinations of the templates, functional monomers, and crosslinkers. Based on these features, this review summarizes the fundamental concepts, recent advances, and applications of MIPs in multiple fields like environmental restoration, wastewater treatments, food analysis, chemical/biological sensing, targeted drug delivery, proteins recognition/purification, and hormone detoxification. The stated applications can be performed using MIPs as sorbents, stationary phases, and catalysts. Furthermore, the review features prospects and suggestions for substantial benefits from MIPs.

Abstract:The accurate detection of biological substances such as proteins has always been a hot topic in scientific research. Biomimetic sensors seek to imitate sensitive and selective mechanisms of biological systems and integrate these traits into applicable sensing platforms. Molecular imprinting technology has been extensively practiced in many domains, where it can produce various molecular recognition materials with specific recognition capabilities. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), dubbed plastic antibodies, are artificial receptors with high-affinity binding sites for a particular molecule or compound. MIPs for protein recognition are expected to have high affinity via numerous interactions between polymer matrices and multiple functional groups of the target protein. This critical review briefly describes recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and application of MIP-based sensor platforms used to detect proteins.

By using a "lock and key" process, MIPs selectively bind to target molecules that were used as templates during polymerization. While MIPs are typically prepared using conventional monomers, such as methacrylic acid and acrylamide, contemporary advancements have pivoted towards the functional potential of dopamine as a novel monomer. The overreaching goal of the proposed review is to fully unlock the potential of molecularly imprinted polydopamine (MIPda) within the realm of cutting-edge sensing applications. This review embarks by shedding light on the intricate tapestry of materials harnessed in the meticulous crafting of MIPda, endowing them with tailored properties. Moreover, we will cover the diverse sensing applications of MIPda, including its use in the detection of ions, small molecules, epitopes, proteins, viruses, and bacteria. In addition, the main synthesis methods of MIPda, including self-polymerization and electropolymerization, will be thoroughly examined. Abstract:Biological receptors including enzymes, antibodies and active proteins have been widely used as the detection platform in a variety of chemo/biosensors and bioassays. However, the use of artificial host materials in chemical/biological detections has become increasingly attractive, because the synthetic recognition systems such as molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) usually have lower costs, higher physical/chemical stability, easier preparation and better engineering possibility than biological receptors. Molecular imprinting is one of the most efficient strategies to offer a synthetic route to artificial recognition systems by a template polymerization technique, and has attracted considerable efforts due to its importance in separation, chemo/biosensors, catalysis and biomedicine. Despite the fact that MIPs have molecular recognition ability similar to that of biological receptors, traditional bulky MIP materials usually exhibit a low binding capacity and slow binding kinetics to the target species. Moreover, the MIP materials lack the signal-output response to analyte binding events when used as recognition elements in chemo/biosensors or bioassays. Recently, various explorations have demonstrated that molecular imprinting nanotechniques may provide a potential solution to these difficulties. Many successful examples of the development of MIP-based sensors have also been reported during the past several decades. This review will begin with a brief introduction to the principle of molecular imprinting nanotechnology, and then mainly summarize various synthesis methodologies and recognition properties of MIP nanomaterials and their applications in MIP-based chemosensors. Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) encompass a diverse array of polymeric matrices that exhibit the unique capacity to selectively identify a designated template molecule through specific chemical moieties. Thanks to their pivotal attributes, including exceptional selectivity, extended shelf stability, and other distinct characteristics, this class of compounds has garnered interest in the development of highly responsive sensor systems. As a result, the incorporation of MIPs in crafting distinctive sensors and analytical procedures tailored for specific analytes across various domains has increasingly become a common practice within contemporary analytical chemistry. Furthermore, the range of polymers amenable to MIP formulation significantly influences the potential utilization of both conventional and innovative analytical methodologies. This versatility expands the array of possibilities in which MIP-based sensing can be employed in recognition systems. The following review summarizes the notable progress achieved within the preceding seven-year period in employing MIP-based sensing techniques for analyte determination.

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs), their association with sensory platforms is on the rise. Due to their highly versatile and tunable nature, the scenarios where MIPs can be deployed are vast but leaves a question, how can they be integrated? The recent progress in deposition methods for the integration of MIPs into the sensory platform is reviewed. Offering high specificity and selectivity, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic polymeric affinity reagents that have become increasingly popular over the last couple of decades. Due to their long‐term chemical and physical stability and low production cost, they have become an increasingly popular choice of receptor in the realm of sense. MIPs have therefore been associated with the detection of small molecules, proteins, cells, and pathogens, proving a highly robust and useful tool in the production of next‐gen sensing platforms. This said, the development of these sensors pivots on one simple fact; these receptors have to be deposited onto a substrate for their desired application. The deposition of MIPs during sensor fabrication is therefore of great importance, with the field utilizing an array of mechanical and chemical deposition methods to achieve this. To this end, this review, therefore, sets aim at coalescing these different deposition approaches, classifying them, and outlining their utility when it comes to receptor design and integration. Thus, offering a knowledge base on current deposition methods, potential future approaches and analyzing where the MIP deposition field is tending toward.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are the equivalent of natural antibodies and have been widely used as synthetic receptors for the detection of disease biomarkers. Benefiting from their excellent chemical and physical stability, low-cost, relative ease of production, reusability, and high selectivity, MIP-based electrochemical sensors have attracted great interest in disease diagnosis and demonstrated superiority over other biosensing techniques. Here we compare various types of MIP-based electrochemical sensors with different working principles. We then evaluate the state-of-the-art achievements of the MIP-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of different biomarkers, including nucleic acids, proteins, saccharides, lipids, and other small molecules. The limitations, which prevent its successful translation into practical clinical settings, are outlined together with the potential solutions. At the end, we share our vision of the evolution of MIP-based electrochemical sensors with an outlook on the future of this promising biosensing technology.
